Behmer, Reverse Prime and Starjack Release Pop-Influenced Bounce Single “Fake People.” Out Now on Purple Fly

by the partae August 14, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Behmer, Reverse Prime ft. Starjack
Title: Fake People
Label: Purple Fly

Swedish bounce producer Behmer joins the ranks of Purple Fly with his debut track on the label, “Fake People,” featuring talented Asia-based producers Reverse Prime and Starjack. Much like NFT-fueled Purple Fly‘s previous releases, “Fake People” is hard to put in a box and innately stands out on the sonic spectrum; the track’s breathy vocals are offset by a slowed-down bassline and jazzy instrumentals. The combination makes for a pop-influenced, groovier version of Behmer‘s usual style, though its lyrics about the pursuit of authenticity in a world filled with much pretension will resonate with listeners of all genres.

“‘Fake People‘ is about the process of making your own music without caring about the money and what other people might think of it. Music should be a way of expressing your emotions through the creative process that is music production, and ‘Fake People‘ perfectly expresses this.” – Behmer

Purple Fly is an independent imprint utilizing cryptocurrency’s hottest frontier as a platform for the spectrum of electronic music. The label’s goal is to support collaborations of all forms of art, connecting music and stunning visuals for an immersive experience that spans the sonic realms of trance to trap. Purple Fly releases NFT directly on its official website with each music drop, enabling artists to have access to direct support from their fan base while expressing their creativity. Behmer, Reverse Prime and Starjack join Laidback Luke, BLVD., Fatman Scoop, Shaquille O’Neal, Sevenn, and more as part of the Purple Fly‘s family. Keep an eye out for more groundbreaking releases from the label in the near future!

Black Caviar Releases Groovy Vocal House Single “Collect Check,” Featuring EMIDA. Out Now on Dim Mak

Artists: Black Caviar
Title: Collect Check feat. EMIDA
Label: Dim Mak Records

Download / Stream

Black Caviar puts a cheeky spin on hustling for money with his new track “Collect Check” on Steve Aoki‘s Dim Mak. Featuring smooth, velvety vocals by EMIDA, this house gem opens with groovy melodies that gently meld into a deep, minimal bassline that feels right at home both on the dance floor or when listening at home. It was inspired by a relationship with financial instability, something that many people faced during the global pandemic, and the desire for success. “Collect Check” is Black Caviar‘s second release on Dim Mak, after 2019’s “Alright Alright, Okay / Zonin’” EP, who has also gained industry attention with releases on Atlantic Records, Universal Music, Casablanca Records, and more. Read on below for the full story behind “Collect Check“:

“When I first heard EMIDA‘s smooth vocals, I was blown away. Her style, tone, and delivery reminded me of Sade. I wanted to make sure the production sat in the right place that would compliment her vocal.” – Black Caviar

“The songwriting process was spurred from a period of financial instability. It led me to write about wanting to hustle out of that situation and aspire to a more opulent lifestyle. The lyrics’ collect cheque – run it back’ are about getting paid but still wanting more because It’s never enough. Ending with ‘run it forward’ – straight to the bank. It was a fun song to write because money can be quite a taboo subject. But with this track, I wanted to make it cheeky, sassy and cool.” – EMIDA

Amassing over 300M Spotify streams, New York City‘s Black Caviar has been solidified in the dance music world with genre-bending music to fans across the globe. Since the release of the 2017 hit single “Coco,” which has totaled over 18M plays on Spotify alone, the trajectory has only gone up from there. Originals, including “El Camino” and “What’s Up Danger” with Blackway, which was the lead track on the “Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse” soundtrack, found massive success in the form of a Gold Record Certification along with a Grammy Nomination. Coming off the heels of a momentous soundtrack accomplishment, Black Caviar was chosen to produce the official remix of the “Charlie’s Angels” theme song to be used in the 2019 update of the classic film. In addition to originals, Black Caviar‘s extensive track catalog includes a momentum-driven house twist on Dillon Francis‘ “DFR,” fresh rendition of Louis The Child and Foster The People‘s “Every Color,” and a popular vibrant rework of the Modjo‘s classic “Lady (Hear Me Tonight),” to name a few. Other high profile artists, including Lizzo, Tiesto, R3HAB, Jason Derulo, and more, have recruited Black Caviar to remix their tracks, and his catchy sound has also touched the commercials of Apple, eBay, McDonald’s, Victoria’s Secret, as well as various movies, Netflix, and TV series. Keep an eye out for more new music and live show announcements coming soon!

AUSTRALIAN ARTIST GEORGE ALICE JOINS INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHTS ON ORIGINAL SIN – 7 SINS SOUNDTRACK

by the partae August 12, 2021
written by the partae

Adelaide’s own female chanteuse, George Alice joins a line-up of international heavyweights on the release of Original Sin – The 7 Sins soundtrack.

Petrol Records/UMe recently celebrated the release of short film, Original Sin – The 7 Sins featuring the songs and music of INXS.

The accompanying 13-song soundtrack features a wealth of INXS-related material, including some dramatic reworkings and reinterpretations of some of the band’s most iconic tracks including, George Alice’s edgy take on “Suicide Blonde.”

Releasing her first song at the age of 15, George Alice’s debut track ‘Circles’ took the triple j Unearthed High crown . Since then, ‘Circles’ has been streamed over 8 million times and climbed to #1 on Australia’s viral charts; hit #31 on Spotify’s GLOBAL Discovery Chart and sat in the Top Ten of triple j’s Most Played.

After striking a global deal with LA based label Loma Vista Recordings (Denzel Curry, St. Vincent, Soccer Mommy) her second single ‘Stuck In A Bubble’ was added to triple j rotation in its first week; also picking up a National Nights add on Australia’s Hit Network. Sir Elton John also picked it up for a spin on his ROCKET HOUR show on Apple Music 1.

Other soundtrack highlights include Michael Hutchence‘s sultry, Spanish-flavoured cover of Eric Burdon & War’s 1970 collaborative classic “Spill The Wine,” Tricky‘s rapid-fire rumination on “Mediate,” the sultry vocals of Sweden’s Ida Redig on “Taste It” and “Kill The Pain” and Trevor Jackson’s pleadingly personal “Need You Tonight” along with international electropop sensation Loane‘s otherworldly French lead vocals on “Mystify.”

GRAMMY Award-winning Music Producer Giles Martin collaborated with Film Director, Amy Tinkham to develop the original concept along with Academy Award-winning sound engineer Chris Jenkins who mixed the 5.1 reimagined audio for the soundtrack.

Original Sin – The 7 Sins soundtrack is available on all major digital platforms HERE

Framed with minimal narration, the unscripted short film runs close to 26 minutes and is a story of isolation and love, inspired by the songs and music of INXS, as a young woman is catapulted through the 7 SINS to find true love and heal her heart.  Original Sin reflects the world’s current state of affairs and the universal quest for reconnection and romance. The short film is harmoniously intertwined with the symbolically poetic music of rock icons, INXS.

“We are honoured that our music inspired such a beautiful and innovative short film. INXS has always explored the marriage of our music with visuals, and we welcome the reimagined versions of our songs performed by a roster of contemporary and up-and-coming global artists. These versions of our songs are a perfect accompaniment to the film,” said Kirk Pengilly of INXS.  “Knowing that ‘Original Sin’ was Chris Murphy’s last passion project makes it even that much more impactful. We are deeply grateful that we are now able to share Amy’s emotive and thought-provoking short film with our audience. Play it loud…”

“Amy Tinkham’s artistic vision using our music within the film is refreshing and truly inspired, the global & diverse artists who brought their imagination through their interpretations of our songs really complement the film while still respecting our original music. It’s such an honour to have these incredible artists cover our music!! I’m humbled by their passion and in awe of their talent.” Said Tim Farriss of INXS.

NICHOLAS HAMILTON

by the partae August 12, 2021
written by the partae

What’s the creative process like for you?

It varies! I’m a big believer of the idea that a song knows where it wants to go, and will reveal itself in due course. If I wake up wanting to write a song, I likely won’t write a song that day, or at least a half-decent one. I do have some methods I use to help eke a song out, like being in a room with a writer far more talented than me, or sitting behind my piano alone and crying about something that happened yesterday.

Your single Pretty Young has a pretty cool music video with the story of your life playing out in a cinema. Can you tell us how this idea came about and what it represents?

The song itself has the ability to be seen as a young person reminiscing about being young, which it is in a way. But for the music video, I really wanted to capture my childhood as much as possible, to show the viewer/listener how much I have changed since I was a kid. How joyous and uninhibited I was. My mum has always had a harddrive of old photos on it, but it wasn’t until I went through it that I found all these videos of me as a kid that I’d never seen before. Seeing yourself as a child, knowing it’s you, but not remembering ever doing what you’re seeing on screen, is such a trippy experience.

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for ‘Pretty Young’?

As I said, this whole EP was brought together by songs I either wrote with someone more talented than me, or wrote sat behind a piano, crying. Pretty Young came from the latter. You never know where a song is going to go when you start writing, obviously, so I started penning this really nostalgic look back on when I was a kid, but got to the end of that first stanza and realised how silly I thought it was to be nostalgic for something that was so recent. That’s how the song turned into me comparing just how different and similar I am now, compared to when my age was still single-digits.

You have a new EP coming out on August 13 titled Pretty Young, what can we expect from it, and what’s currently your favourite track?

I love writing about personal experiences. I believe a song hits twice as hard if you know it’s about something the artist had to get through and learn from. The whole EP is filled with those songs. Little diary entries of my life so far. It’s so hard to pick a favourite song, but if I go by the song that means the most to me, it’s Pretty Young. It’s the only track on the EP that I wrote fully myself from start to finish, so it holds a special place in my heart. The unreleased single too, Everything to Lose, is such a groovy, funky song it’s ridiculous. Completely out of my comfort zone and such a tune.

I heard that you recently moved back to LA for a new role, and contracted the Delta Strain of COVID-19, can you tell us more about that experience?

Yes, and yes. I was living in the States for two and a half years and eventually moved back to Australia for a few months in April of this year, to expand my fanbase there and see family and friends again. I came back to LA mid-July, and a week and a half later I tested positive for COVID. It just sucked so much, timing-wise and the physical sickness part, obviously. Three days of the worst flu I’ve ever had times 10. At the peak, I couldn’t lift my head off my pillow without feeling faint. I’ve seen some people calling me out for complaining about my symptoms, which is entirely not the point I’m trying to make. I’ve got a platform, specifically targeted towards young people, and I want to use it to tell people to get vaccinated. I was lucky to have gotten vaccinated when I came back to the States, and it still hit me off my feet. Who knows how bad it would’ve been if I was unvaxxed.

So we know you can act, we know you can sing, what do you do in your spare time? DO you have any spare time??

I’m lucky to have two simultaneous careers that stemmed from hobbies! I love music and movies, and I get to make both of them, insanely lucky. I like playing sports and video games too, mainly as social activities. I like being with people whose company I enjoy, no matter what we’re doing. Alcohol is encouraged.

What does the next 5 years look like for you?

Who knowwwwwws! I used to be one of those people who planned year by year schedules, knowing what I wanted to do in 2025 before 2020 even started. The pandemic changed my whole mindset there, I’m much more of a daily person now. I focus on what I can do today to make tomorrow better for me and the people around me. Sticking to that has done me well so far.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?

I’m in the fortunate position of being able to think about both actors and musicians I’d like to work with in the future. I’ve always wanted to work with Tom Hanks. I just love how he works and his humility and kindness on set. He’s definitely someone I try to mirror when I’m on set. Him, Taika Waititi and Florence Pugh are actors I’d love to work with in the screen industries. Music-wise, being onstage with Lewis Capaldi, Aloe Blacc or Billie Eilish is my absolute dream.

What bands have influenced your sound?

I feel like, sound-wise, I’ve been told which artists I’ve been influenced by by other people more than realising my sound influences myself. Artists like George Ezra and James Bay have been thrown at me, both of which are massive compliments. I’ve always felt like I was influenced more by the artists I listened to while I was growing up. Less in a sonic way, moreso in how my love of music was formed from a young age. I would go on road trips and short drives with my family and listen to their favourite artists, like my dad’s The Eagles and America, my mum’s Kenny Rogers and Poison and my brother’s Triple J tastes. Those drives are where I believe my passion for music started growing.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUNK VETERANS FACE TO FACE RELEASE NEW SINGLE “FAREWELL SONG” OFF FORTHCOMING ALBUM NO WAY OUT BUT THROUGH OUT VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 10

FAT Wreck Chords and iconic West Coast rock band face to face are excited to present “Farewell Song,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, September 10 release of the band’s brand new album, No Way Out But Through.

Produced by the Juno Award-winning Seigfried Meier, No Way Out But Through is a record that brims with intelligent songwriting, arena-sized choruses, big guitars, and a distinct musical fluidity that comes from playing together as a band for over 30 years.

Showcasing the more thoughtful and experimental side of the band’s profile, album closer “Farewell Song” is about moving on in one’s life and is a send-off to the past. “Scott [Shiflett] brought in ‘Farewell Song’ and at first I was reluctant to work on it because I thought it sounded like The Cure or something,” frontman Trever Keith recalls. “However, as we were working on it, I realised that this was a song I could pour myself into as an artist and I think it’s one of the strongest songs on the album.”

Stream “Farewell Song” HERE

Pre-Order No Way Out But Through

face to face are a rarity in the music world: A band that not only helped define a sound, but who continue to fine-tune their music with each subsequent release. This is undoubtedly true of the band’s tenth full-length No Way Out But Through, a melodic-punk masterpiece teeming with blistering guitar riffs, fleet-fingered bass lines and vocal harmonies that are so infectious they’ll be rattling around your brain for weeks on end. Then again this should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed face to face’s 30-year history.

The band—guitarist/vocalist Trever Keith, bassist/background vocalist Scott Shiflett, guitarist Dennis Hill and drummer Danny Thompson—once again reject complacency and push their musical limits on the follow-up to 2016’s return-to-form, Protection.

“This lineup of face to face has been intact for well over a decade at this point and it’s the best lineup the band has ever had,” Keith explains. “On ‘Protection’, I was intentionally writing songs that were reminiscent of our first three albums but on this album I was able to try some different things. There’s a freshness and a newness to the way that these songs came together, and I think that’s really evident when you’re listening to this album.” This connection and chemistry lies at the core of No Way Out But Through and is why the inherent energy on the album sounds so effortless.

No Way Out But Through sees Keith, who has always been known for his motivational anthems, penning some of his most introspective lyrics to date. “I wouldn’t consider this to be a concept album but I did base each song on a thematic idea this time around,” he explains. These themes range from overcoming anxiety to self-acceptance, ideas that have been a constant aspect of face to face’s mission statement as their sound has constantly evolved. “I really like writing songs that are motivational or inspirational on their face but ultimately have a message that helps people become a better version of themselves,” he adds.

While most bands celebrating their 30th anniversary are releasing reissues and retreading their past, face to face have crafted one of the most vital and energised albums of their career with No Way Out But Through. In fact, in many ways the album is the sound of a band hitting their stride with all cylinders firing. So what is the secret to face to face’s enduring vitality?

“We’ve had our hiatus, we’ve made art records, we’ve made acoustic albums, but the best path for us has always been forward, and so here we are,” Keith summarises. “We may be in our fifties now but we wanted to send a message that we are not mellowing out and that this is energetic, hard-hitting punk rock. We’re full-steam ahead as a band and as songwriters.”

Bae Baracus

by the partae August 11, 2021
written by the partae
What is your name and role within Bae Baracus?
Dolly: Dolly, vocals
Clef: I’m Clef, I’m sorta like a co-pilot / instrumentalist. Lin helms the ship and I groove with it!
Lin: Lin, writer, arranger, keyboards, programmer and producer

How did the band form?
Lin: We got together during one of my songwriting workshops – it was just the three of us and we gelled instantly, so decided to form a band
Dolly: Lin, composer and producer extraordinaire brought us together to try out some songwriting using her song seeds as a base, and we managed to write an EP over just a day and a half. So we decided to become a band!
Clef: Lin got me and Dolly in studio for a weekend and we jammed out some magic

Where are you currently based?
Dolly: Vancouver, in Beautiful BC (unceded Traditional Coast Salish Lands including the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ) and Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) Nations.)
Clef: Sunshine Coast, BC
Lin: I’m in Roberts Creek (xwesam) on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, which is on the traditional unceded territories of the Sechelt and Squamish Nations

What’s been happening recently?
Lin:  I’ve been super busy directing the music on upcoming video game Age of Empires IV, just released a collaborative album project under the artist name Julia Sound and most recently, writing, recording and producing Bae Baracus’s debut album
Dolly: I attended the first live music show in well over a year, which was incredible. I really missed the sense of community you get at a concert.
Clef: Live music is back in little pockets and I’ve been catching the wave! I’ve been DJing and doing a live set here and there, but my big ticket these days is Tetrahedron, my extemporal comedy rock spectacle!!

Your new single ‘Definition Of Love’ will be out on August 20, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Lin: For Definition of Love I had this beat where I’d gone back to some old school 90’s samples and wanted to evoke that golden era of early house music… We had been working on another song which was kind of channeling New Order, and Dolly’s lead vocals on DoL is also rooted in that Bernard Sumner mood. Clef brings his exuberant energy and funky edge to the track!
Clef: There’s this acid-house party feel to the track that I found really inspiring. My verse felt absurd to me during the recording but the hype is for real and that’s what I like about it!

How did the single come about?
Clef: Lin had a frame and some chords, I laid down some guitar, bass, some bleep bloops, Dolly penned some lyrics, we recorded and ba-bam!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
Lin: I’ve been engineering, producing and mixing for a long time, and have my own studio The Sound Garden, where we wrote and recorded the single and upcoming album. Once I’ve finished the production and mix, I love working with mastering engineer Ohan Vandermeer at Dialled In Audio for the mastering
Clef: Sound Garden Retreat studio in Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast BC. Check out Lin, it’s awesome!

How did you approach the recording process?
Dolly: We started with song seeds that Lin wrote and took inspiration from there. I was also inspired by a DJ set that Clef did on one of the nights during our time recording at Sound Garden Retreat.
Clef: There was no wading around in the shallow end, with Bae Baracus we jump from the high board head first!
Lin: What I love about working with Bae Baracus is that we have this really fast approach to the writing and recording process. Dolly is influenced by punk (& other genres) and I think that approach also influences us as a band. I love the way we flow so fast and throw down ideas in a flash and then move on – it removes that agonising pursuit of perfection which can in itself be a blocker

What programs/equipment did you use?
Lin: I use Logic Pro as my DAW (been using it since the 90s!), and have a full complement of virtual instruments, but we also love dusting off some classic old pieces when we work as a band – Roland Juno 60, Roland JX3P (originals not the mini resissues), Akai 3200XL sampler, 80’s Yamaha keyboard and a crackly old Melos echo unit all make an appearance
Clef: I like to bring a carload of stuff and see what inspires. I have a Yamaha PS-20 that got a lot of use this session, and of course my trusty OP-1 from Teenage Engineering, my trusty right hand synth. Plus a neat Mexican telecaster and an old fender jazz bass.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Dolly: Vovoid, Belle & Sébastien
Clef: I’ve been on a Boiler Room kick recently, a find all sorts of amazing artists and DJs from all over!
Lin: I’m a bit all over the map at the moment… I’m loving tracks on Nithin Sawney’s recent ‘Immigrants’ album, love TV composer Dominik Scherrer’s work and since my other half left an old Mary J Blige CD in the car, have been belting out “No More Drama” lately too

What do you like to do away from music?
Dolly: I ride a motorcycle, and I’ve taken up mountain biking recently.
Clef: I became a dad in September 2020 right before the 2nd wave lockdown, so my winter comprised of poopy diapers, walking my dog with a baby strapped to my chest, and not playing music live 🙂
Lin: Growing vegetables… I love the cycle of the seasons and the challenges that growing food without chemicals presents. And I love cooking, preserving and eating the results 🙂

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?
Lin:  No solid plans, but looking forward to getting the Bae Baracus album out and hoping that we can book some live shows once the world is less Covid-y
Clef: Live music seems to be coming back so I’m gonna get while the getting’s good! More shows, DJ gigs, refine my live setup, etc.  You can’t take for granted that in a moment’s notice your art can be deemed unsafe for human consumption. After a year of prohibition tho, I’ve never felt more inspired to go out and get after it. Get ready for a huge post-pandemic proto-punk phase. Music is about to get reeeeeally good!
Dolly: Nothing! It’s hard to plan anything these days.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Dolly: Sushi, and the Heatley bar in East Vancouver.
Clef: I’ve been really digging Gibsons Tapworks these days, craft beer and they just put in a kitchen to up the food game and, WHOA did they ever deliver! Also, the patio is low key the best patio in BC.
Lin: Favourite fluctuates between a good pizza and good curry 🙂 For hanging out, there’s a great organic beer farm on the Coast called Persephone… really cool chill place to hang.

Chapter Music announce new signing: Teether & Kuya Neil

When rapper Teether & producer Kuya Neil began to collaborate in late 2020, two powerful forces in the Naarm/Melbourne underground came together to create something rare and special. This week, the pair announce their signing to legendary Chapter Music and share arresting new track, ‘Theory‘ out today.

In a statement on their new signing, Chapter Music’s Ben O’Connor and Guy Blackman share, “At Chapter Music, we’re over the moon to announce that we’ve signed the exceptionally exciting Naarm/Melbourne duo Teether & Kuya Neil. Their magnificent EP God of Surprises, released earlier this year via great local label X Amount Records, has been on repeat at Chapter HQ ever since it came out.”

At 25, Teether already has a deep dive catalogue of solo releases to his name, largely released via the X Amount collective of which he is a founding member. There are also collaborative projects like Too Birds and even atmospheric metal bands stretching back to the early 2010s.

Kuya Neil is just as prolific. His CV ranges from membership of NZ “family rap ensemble” Fanau Spa, to collaboration with local heroes Papaphilia and Various Asses, to his work with Melbourne Sound School.

Together, Teether & Kuya Neil make future-focused rap informed by modern club styles like footwork, gqom and bass music. Teether’s nonchalant but vivid words infuse Neil’s disorientating, hyper-modern production.

‘Theory’ by Teether & Kuya Neil is out now on Chapter Music, with more announcements expected to follow soon.

“This song is called ‘She Loves Me’ and features the ridiculously talented Stella Explorer. I was connected with Stella by my friend Oskar who runs the label Year0001. He had sent me some of her stuff, I loved it, and so he put us in contact”.

“Stella and I mailed some music back and forth, and one day I received the beautiful vocal that is in the piece today. I hold this song extremely close to my heart, and I can’t wait for you all to hear it. Much Love, Armand”

Speaking more on the collaboration Stella Explorer commented that “The fine line between self affirmation and paranoia is alluring to me. And in music it’s always present. It’s deceptive, and lyrics can change meaning at any time. I think the fewer words you use, the more they shift. And by combining that with different intentions like you do when you collaborate with someone (like this), it makes the outcome exciting.”

Recorded between Berlin and Malmo, Mirrors is the follow-up to Seinfeld’s critically acclaimed 2017 debut album Time Spent Away From U and his first for Ninja Tune. Named after a quote by Armand’s favourite writer, Argentine novelist Julio Cortázar, the album finds the producer in a more settled and grounded mood after an unfortunate family incident forced the producer to spend more time at home in his native Sweden over the past few years. Recently released lead single ‘U Already Know’, an  Italo-tinged summer anthem and dance floor ready second single ‘These Things Will Come To Be’ received impressive support from the likes of The Guardian, RA, The Fader, DJ Mag, Clash, XLR8R and Mixmag, who also featured Seinfeld as their July cover star. Radio support has also come from the likes of Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Jack Saunders and the Blessed Madonna.

Seinfeld also recently launched a new monthly live-series on Spotify’s Greenroom platform. Titled ‘GALAZY ROOM’ the show features informal discussions around one of Armand’s burning interests: Space. DJ Seinfeld, musicians and friends will join Armand to discuss everything from The Universe to Space Exploration to Unexplained Aerial Phenomena, and maybe find time to share some music too. This week he also announced a new whatsapp voicemail hotline where he’s inviting fans to be more interactive by leaving their own personal voice notes for potential future sampling in his music.

Rising to prominence in 2016 as part of the lo-fi house scene alongside producers including Ross From Friends and Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld (whose name is a result of extended sessions watching the classic American sitcom after a breakup and move to Barcelona) released his debut album in 2017 which received plaudits from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to name a couple. It also gained attention from contemporaries like Flume, Flying Lotus, Bonobo and Martin Garrix and saw Seinfeld become a globally in-demand DJ playing sets everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella, Warehouse Project, Sónar By Night and MoMaPS1, sharing stages with everyone from Jeff Mills to Stormzy, Underworld and Bicep as well as accompanying Disclosure on several dates of their US tour. In 2018 he became part of a select group of DJs that includes Moodymann, DJ Koze and Nina Kraviz when he was chosen to curate an edition of the iconic DJ Kicks mix series. To top it off, Aphex Twin began playing his track ‘Sakura’ in his live shows.

Mirrors is out September 3, 2021 on Ninja Tune, with new single ‘She Loves Me‘ out now.

“One of my favourite new artists”
Arlo Parks

“Modern rock anthems…’Porcupine’ is a breakthrough moment”
Pigeons & Planes

“Her songs are rich, accomplished and instantly relatable”
Dork

Molly Payton announces her forthcoming mini-album Slack today, out October 1st via The Orchard, and shares a new single and video ‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’. LISTEN HERE.

The London-based 20-year-old has recently returned from a long stint in her homeland of Aotearoa / New Zealand, where she created Slack remotely with her frequent collaborator Oli Barton-Wood (Nilüfer Yanya, Porridge Radio, Sorry), as well as GRAMMY-award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Sia, Amy Winehouse) and British songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwich. Molly is set to appear at a number of festivals this year, including Pitchfork Music Festival Paris, Dot To Dot and Liverpool Sound City, and will join Oscar Lang on his UK tour this October.

‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’ is accompanied by a video directed by Taylor Mansfield, which carries on the storyline from the previous single and video for ‘Honey’, showing the delirious aftermath of a breakdown in communication. Molly’s mini-album follows her breakout EP Porcupine, released last Autumn to wide critical acclaim, including Pigeons & Planes, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Steve Lamacq at 6Music and Jack Saunders at BBC Radio 1. It also caught the ears of fellow artists, including Arlo Parks, who chose Molly to appear alongside her takeover of Spotify’s ‘Our Generation’ playlist, commenting of Molly’s music “there was just this sense of rawness and earnestness that really reminded me of things that I’ve lived myself.”

Molly explains that ‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’ was the genesis of her coming project Slack, representing a shift in both her mindset and lyricism with a renewed focus on self-reflection and accountability. Molly explains; “You Cut Me So Much Slack is a song I wrote initially for my EP Porcupine, but decided just before it came out that it fit better in this project. In Porcupine when I wrote about friendships and relationships I was placing a lot of blame on other people, whereas my coming project Slack is more self-reflective and centres around taking responsibility for your own faults in order to grow. My anxiety used to make it almost impossible to communicate and express my feelings to someone, and when I tried it would never come out the way I wanted it to. That’s what this song is driven by, that frustration and desperation of wanting someone but not being able to tell them.”

The thematic shift is one that mirrors Molly’s return to her roots. Originally intended to be a short stay, her time in Aotearoa / New Zealand was extended as UK lockdowns prevailed. As well as spending time with the friends and places she left as a teenager, it also fuelled her resolution to reconnect with the memories and tribulations of her past, and process them through her songwriting. Revolving around  the adage of looking back in order to move forward, she describes her coming output as “honest, reflective and hopeful.” Her time back home also allowed her to rediscover the catharsis of playing live, with Molly performing a series of full-capacity headline gigs against the backdrop of NZ’s low Covid rates and eased restrictions.

‘You Cut Me So Much Slack’ is out now, buy/stream it here.

I KNOW LEOPARD RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘DAY 2 DAY’

by the partae August 10, 2021
written by the partae

I Know Leopard are back with their second single for 2021, this time dialling up the emotional intensity in their new hyper-coloured shimmer pop setting with “Day 2 Day” which premiered on triple j’s Good Nights.

As with their previous 2021 single, “Lover Automatic”, “Day 2 Day” was produced by lead vocalist and main songwriter Luke O’Loughlin and was co-produced and mixed by Konstantin Kersting who has made a name for himself behind the board for Tones & I, Jungle Giants, Mallrat, The Rubens, Tia Gostelow and WAAX.

With its driving piano riff, pulsing synths, gliding violin and uptempo sampled drums “Day 2 Day” manages to be musically inspiring and even anthemic while paradoxically, the lyrics address a relatable feeling of persistent self-doubt. The acclaim to the band’s pivot from the ‘70s soft rock inspired Love Is A Landmine 2019 album to a sweet but smart take on alt-pop has been near universal, and the band have more new music to release this year and into early 2022.

As with most Australian other live music of late, due to ongoing COVID restrictions the trio of O’Loughlin, bassist Rosie Fitzgerald and violinist / vocalist Jenny McCullagh have had to reschedule both upcoming Sydney and Melbourne shows. The anticipation for the return of the band has been high as the shows will be the first time they hit the stage in two years.

Reactions to “Lover Automatic”

“It’s a stellar comeback with their left field, suave, pop slant sounding ace with hip hop kinda drums and a romance fuelling those grooves”
Declan Byrne, Home & Hosed / Triple J

““Lover Automatic” is one of those tracks which sucks you in with repeat listens. It has an infectious pop hook with sweet falsetto vocals from Luke O’Loughlin….The violin of Jenny McCullagh is always a joy to hear, and Rosie Fitzgerald on bass reminds us why she in such high demand.”
AU Review Track Of The Week

“It’s a taut and unpretentious three-and-a-half-minute pop package, devoid of fat but still able to accommodate a wonderfully wobbly 35-second synth solo right in the middle of it.”

Annie Hamilton shares new single ‘Exist’

PRAISE FOR ANNIE HAMILTON

“[Annie Hamilton’s debut EP is] an assured blend of anthemic indie-rock, thrumming shoegaze textures and artful lyrics”
NME Magazine AU

“… [A]nnie’s music is seriously underrated. this has it all.”
Declan Byrne, triple j

“She finds the extraordinary in everyday life, and creates beautiful, emotionally-rich indie tunes to explore this wonder… Hamilton has a knack for making music that is at once hugely personal and completely universal”
Purple Sneakers

“[E]verything Annie Hamilton has done since feels like a move you’d expect from someone amongst the future of Australian pop”
Pilerats

Following the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP last year, Eora/Sydney-based musician, visual artist and fashion designer Annie Hamilton emerges once more with new single, ‘Exist’, out now on [PIAS] Australia.

A song about making space in your mind for the small, beautiful things when the big things fall out of your control, ‘Exist’ was initially written and recorded in the midst of the city’s first lockdown, and arrives in the middle of another in a bittersweet full-circle moment. Co-produced by Annie Hamilton and Pete Covington (Thelma Plum, Middle Kids), the track lands alongside a heady fever-dream of a video directed by Jordan Watton that features costumes by Hamilton and a cameo from her TikTok-famous chicken, Grimes.

Of the track, Annie says “I wrote this song in the middle of lockdown last year, about someone very close to me who was going through a difficult time. It’s about focusing on the small things when you cannot control the big things.”

Propelled forward into the sunlight by dramatic drums, oscillating synths, soaring guitar and layers of strings, Annie Hamilton’s signature blend of dream-pop and alt-rock is on full display alongside her trademark matter-of-fact yet transportive lyricism, as she tells the subject of her song “You cannot sleep, but please keep dreaming” – a message as gentle and hopeful as it is timely.

Through cascading, ethereal vocals and sprawling instrumentation, Annie Hamilton boasts a unique ability to evoke memory and nostalgia within her music. In her short solo career, she has already completed tours with Julia Jacklin, Gordi and Jack River, as well as attracting the praise of triple j, FBi Radio, RUSSH and LNWY, and boasts strong support on streaming platforms, with over 2 million streams across DSPs.

IN CINEMAS WORLDWIDE FROM 23 SEPTEMBER
VIA TRAFALGAR RELEASING

OASIS KNEBWORTH 1996 LIVE ALBUM & DVD/BLU-RAY RELEASED 19 NOVEMBER VIA BIG BROTHER RECORDINGS
PRE-ORDER HERE

Marking 25 years to the day since the first night of the record breaking Knebworth 1996 concerts, today Oasis unveil the trailer for their eagerly anticipated cinematic documentary, released in cinemas worldwide from 23 September via Trafalgar Releasing. In addition, tickets to the theatrical release of Oasis Knebworth 1996 are now available*.

Also announced today, a full live album and DVD/Blu-ray, also titled Oasis Knebworth 1996 is due for release on 19 November via Big Brother Recordings Ltd.

Directed by Grammy Award-winner Jake Scott, Oasis Knebworth 1996 is a joyful and at times poignant cinematic celebration of one of the most iconic live concert events of the last 25 years, driven entirely by the music, and the fans’ own experiences of that monumental weekend.

The film celebrates the story of the special relationship between Oasis and their fans that made the largest concert of the ‘90’s possible. It is told entirely in the moment through the eyes of the fans who were there, built around extensive and never before seen archive concert and backstage footage from the event, with additional interviews with the band and concert organisers. Watch the official trailer here. Tickets are now on sale here.

The special live album and DVD/Blu-ray, also titled Oasis Knebworth 1996 released on 19 November via Big Brother Recordings Ltd formats include 2CD and triple LP on heavyweight vinyl with the digital version of the album featuring HD audio. The DVD will be released as a triple disc set including the Oasis Knebworth 1996 cinematic documentary plus both nights of the live concert in full, with the Blu-ray in single disc format. Limited edition formats include the 2CD with DVD of the cinematic documentary, plus a Super Deluxe Box Set including the triple LP, 2CD and triple DVD plus replicas of the original gig memorabilia, available exclusively from the band’s online store. All formats are available for pre-order here.

Oasis’ two record breaking nights at Knebworth took place on 10th & 11th August 1996, with over a quarter of a million young music fans from all over the world converging on Knebworth Park, Hertfordshire to see the legendary sets. Tickets went on sale on 11 May 1996. Queues formed outside local record shops and ticket offices overnight, and fans around the world spent the day on their landline phones trying to get through to constantly engaged booking lines. All tickets sold out in less than 24 hours, breaking every UK box office record in the process. Organisers estimated the band could have sold two or three times as many tickets, with over 2% of the population of the UK attempting to buy tickets.

The monumental shows were set against a backdrop of the UK slowly recovering from a decade of recession. Emerging from the ‘80s, the mood of the nation was changing. A cultural resurgence in arts and culture was giving rise to Cool Britannia and, in their meteoric rise, Oasis embodied that newfound optimism and swagger. Two short years had taken the band from their council estate in Manchester to becoming one of the biggest bands in the world and for the congregated masses, seeing themselves in the five men on stage in front of them, anything felt possible. Featuring a setlist absolutely packed from beginning to end with stone cold classics, from the opening salvo of ‘Columbia’ and ‘Acquiesce’, all the way to ‘Champagne Supernova’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Live Forever’, a triumphant, orchestra backed ‘I Am The Walrus’, and the first song from the 1990s to cross one billion streams on Spotify, ‘Wonderwall,’ the Knebworth concerts were both the pinnacle of the band’s success and the landmark gathering for a generation.

The film is produced by Black Dog Films for Kosmic Kyte Ltd. Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher serve as executive producers. It is financed and distributed by Sony Music Entertainment and will be released theatrically by Trafalgar Releasing.

*Due to lockdowns in parts of the country, not all Australian cinemas are on sale at present.

Harm & Ease

by the partae August 10, 2021
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We are currently based out of Toronto, Ontario.

How did you first start playing music?

I always had a love for music and melody and I was often found singing and dancing around the house as a child. Thankfully my parents encouraged my passion and enrolled me in singing lessons when I was 12. I eventually picked up the old acoustic guitar in my house and started writing my own music. Soon after I met a few of the other guys and we bonded over our love of rock music and decided to form our own band.

What’s been happening recently?

As of recently we’ve been busy in the studio creating and recording our newest songs. We just released our song “Cut Me Loose” to which we are getting a great response online. We are always trying to keep up with our fans on TikTok and Instagram and can’t wait to get back out there to play some live shows and showcase our new sound.

Your new single ‘Cut Me Loose’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

We wanted to take our sound to a more professional and modern level without losing that raw energy and bluesy nature. I think we’ve retained that passion and created something sonically pleasing to both young and old and most demographics!

How did you go about writing ‘Cut Me Loose’ and what does this single mean to you?

John actually pitched the song to the band and we all immediately loved it. We posted a video of us performing the song online on TikTok, and it successfully went viral overnight racking up about 2 million views. A lot of people all over the world were asking for it to be released, so we knew we had to. We began playing the song for folks online and almost everyone was convinced it would be a hit. I’m really proud of this song because of how well it showcases our newest sound and how hard we’ve been working together as a band. It’s very well crafted and has so much energy to it, you can’t help but headband along.

Where and when did you record/produce/master the single and who with?

Much of the recording process and production of the song was done back during June in our home studio at Cosmo Cat Records. We got in touch with Canadian producer Tawgs Salter who was excited to work on the song. We sent the session to him for more production and the final mastering was done by Tokyo Speirs.

How did you approach the recording process?

A) We had been playing “Cut Me Loose” acoustically on Tik Tok for about a month so we already had a pretty good feel for the tune. It was just about taking it to the next level and letting everyone’s ability’s shine on the final product. We had recorded a few early demos during the lockdown in an older studio, but really worked and refined the core of the song at Cosmo Cat Records studio . We have a great set up in our studio so it was easy to do most of the recording and engineering ourselves before we sent it to Tawgs for further production. Recording is something that we really enjoy and do on a daily basis, and we are learning and growing everyday.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

You can expect tons of new music and hopefully some announcements for Canadian show dates for later this year. We are releasing a live action music video for “Cut Me Loose” in a few weeks and are already planning for our next singles and hope to release them in the upcoming months.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

You can usually find me listening to Supertramp or some sort of classic rock band but as for current music I’ve been listening to a lot of The Blue Stones. I really dig their music, it reminds me of what we are sort of doing with our music. It’s awesome they are a Canadian band as well, modern but still incorporating those big riffs and that bluesy rock vibe.

What do you like to do away from music?

When I have the time I really enjoy cooking and making food for the people I love. Anytime you can bring your friends and family together to have a few laughs and forget about the stress of daily life.

Favourite food and place to hang out?

My favourite food has got to be tacos. I just always feel like it’s a party when Mexican food is in the mix. I’m a sucker for a good hot sauce, I love the spice. Sneaky Dees has great food for that. We love getting out and exploring new places and cities, especially getting in touch with nature and the great outdoors. We are always on the lookout for a good time. It’s been difficult with the recent lockdown but hopefully we can get back out there with everything reopened.

CHARLOTTE CORNFIELD ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM HIGHS IN THE MINUSES

SHARES LEAD SINGLE / VIDEO “HEADLINES”

ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 29TH, 2021 VIA POLYVINYL / DOUBLE DOUBLE WHAMMY

PRE-ORDER NOW
“With a delivery as authentically conversational as her songwriting, the Toronto-based musician treats even the broadest themes on a person-to-person scale.”
Pitchfork

Charlotte Cornfield today announces her new album Highs in the Minuses will be released on October 29th, 2021, via Polyvinyl (Squirrel Flower, Oceanator, Xiu Xiu) / Double Double Whammy (Hovvdy, Great Grandpa, Lomelda) — the first-ever co-release for both labels.

The Toronto, ON-based artist has also shared the first single from the album: “Headlines,” a driving track with an earworm chorus that belies the anxiety permeating its lyrics. Here we find Cornfield doom-scrolling in a small room, spinning her wheels in a state of helplessness. “Skimming headlines/Walking slowly/Circling around,” she repeats four times in the song’s chorus, a device that hooks the listener while emphasising the cyclical, maddening nature of anxiety.

Of the song’s accompanying video, Cornfield explains: “I wanted to express the joy of seeing people, of those little interactions that happen throughout the day that I missed so much in the last year and a half. When I wrote this song I was spending so much time walking alone through my neighbourhood, and I wanted the video to take place on the same streetscape but be the antidote to that solitude. To me the city is so much about the people in it. Adrienne McLaren Devenyi, the director, came up with this arc of me exchanging objects with people as I move through the neighbourhood and that just created a beautiful jumping off point for these interactions. We had so much fun making this video, and it was such a gift to see everybody.”

After spending much of 2020 with her thoughts and instruments, Cornfield knew it was time to take her new songs out of the house. She’d spent months writing a suite of evocative, autobiographical story-songs in near-solitude, and was ready for the immediate, regenerative experience of a band playing live in the studio. But this wasn’t mere pandemic-related longing. It was instead a long-simmering desire.

The singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist’s 2019 album The Shape of Your Name — which received widespread praise, including being long-listed for the coveted Polaris Music Prize — was a slow solo endeavor, written alone and meticulously recorded in fits and starts over the span of a few years, and she’d even played most of its instruments. For Highs in the Minuses, Cornfield knew she needed a cast that was representative of her journey through the DIY scene of Toronto and the music program at Montreal’s Concordia University, those friends and colleagues who’ve helped her become the incisive, witty, and generous writer and player she is.

Though the songs of Highs in the Minuses are highly personal, Cornfield wanted their sonic quality to convey the communal, aleatoric energy of live performance. With this in mind, she and the band allowed their psychic connection to convey the emotional interconnectedness that comes with stories of heartbreak, self-discovery, and new love. Cornfield (guitar, piano, vocals), bassist Alexandra Levy (Ada Lea) and drummer Liam O’Neill (Suuns) convened in Montreal at the studio of Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen), whom Cornfield had originally met through a musician’s residency he founded at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. In just five days, with minimal takes and overdubs—and with contributions from guitarist Sam Gleason (Tim Baker) and Stars singer Amy Millan—they set Cornfield’s vivid mini-memoirs to an earthen folk-rock symphony.

Throughout Highs in the Minuses, it’s tempting to think of Cornfield as a narrator, given the autobiographical nature of many of the songs, but this framing discounts her deep consideration of the listener. She’s not broadcasting absolute truths but rather inviting us to feel alongside her, to acknowledge the raw, shambolic commonality found in individual experiences. Like David Berman and John Prine, Cornfield’s lyrics ring with precision — a rhythmic, poetic clarity that may devastate the heart or tickle the ribs in a simple turn of phrase.
