BLOOD COMMAND STREAM NEW SINGLE ‘THE END IS HER’ Second Glimpse of New Vocalist Nikki Brumen (ex-Pagan) Out Now Via Hassle Records

by the partae September 11, 2021
written by the partae

Blood Command have released their new single “The End is Her”, the second glimpse of the band’s new vocalist, Nikki Brumen (ex-Pagan).

The self-described ‘deathpop’ band are a one-of-a-kind proposition. Hardcore meets metal meets pop meets punk, Blood Command have previously been called ‘one of the world’s best kept secrets‘ by Rock Sound, achieved one of the Albums of the Year in Kerrang! and applauded by Metal Hammer, among others.

Alongside the release of their new single, Blood Command have also launched their Australian merch store. View the collection here

STREAM “THE END IS HER” HERE

Blood Command mastermind Yngve Andersen comments: “’The End is Her” is for the losers, for the wallflowers and for the people who never quite fit in. It’s a song about feeling so invisible that no matter how loud you scream, no one will hear you. For anyone who burns so brightly but nobody else sees even a flicker of the flame.

I wrote the lyrics at time when I was feeling weak and alone but used this darkness as ammo to become stronger. You never know what is going on in someone’s mind or what they are capable of, so I want this song to remind people to never underestimate the outcasts. That we have the ability to use the doubt of others to ignite something inside of us – to strike a match and light the world on fire.

It felt right to release this track next, as this was the first song I showed Nikki when I first asked her to join the band. I knew she could scream, but I’d never heard her actually sing, so I gave her this song to record and send back to me, just to make sure she was the right fit. I was actually playing a show when she sent the demo back and let’s just say, I partied really hard that night. It was a dream come true.

We’ve shown the heavier side of the new era of Blood Command with “A Villain’s Monologue“. Now it’s time to shake it up with “The End is Her” – quintessential Death Pop, this is the anthem for anyone who has ever thought it won’t get better but has found solace in realising they aren’t the only one who is suffering.”

Blood Command have previously toured with Biffy Clyro, Kvelertak, Rolo Tomassi, and Skindred, following the release of their acclaimed EP Return of the Arsonist, the conceptual successor to 2011’s Hand Us The Alphamale EP. The band have also shared the stage with Refused, Tragedy, Comeback Kid, and Gallows, and have played Download Festival, The Great Escape, 2000trees and Roskilde festivals, among others. Blood Command will embark on an extensive tour of Europe with Kvelertak in 2022.

Now with celebrated UK label Hassle Records and with Nikki at the front, Blood Command‘s power and prestige only rises higher.

OBERHOFER ANNOUNCES HIS FIRST LP IN NEARLY 6 YEARS, “SMOTHERED”, OUT NOVEMBER 12 VIA TELEFONO RECORDS

by the partae September 11, 2021

CRITICAL PRAISE FOR LEAD SINGLE “WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?”

Included on NPR Music‘s New Music Friday playlist
“A big, zonked-out psychedelic pop number with a few notes of R&B. It’s got a big and festival-ready sense of sweep.” – Stereogum
“Employs shimmering keys and harmonies to craft mesmerising dream pop.” – Alt Press, Best Songs of the Week
“R&B-tinged, psychedelic-leaning dream-pop.” – Cool Hunting
“Familiar themes of romance and dreams taking an existential turn.” – Flood

Today, Oberhofer announces his first album in nearly 6 years, Smothered, alongside a new single and music video, “Let It Go”. With Smothered, out November 12 via Telefono Records, Oberhofer fashions songs from the sparks of his own creative fire, through personal tragedy, professional uncertainty, and existential crises. He imprinted the anxiety, depression, and darkness of a two-year whirlwind upon tense dream-pop underpinned by wistful crescendos, harmonies straight-out-of-the-fifties, and soundtrack-worthy synth transmissions. The album features Teddy Geiger, Shamir and Nick Valensi of The Strokes. Additional performers include King Princess on “Dreaming Of U”, Jónsi on “All I Want”, and Girlpool on “Miss Yr Face”.

On the new single “Let It Go”, Oberhofer’s vocals circle around a glitchy beat and hazy synths. It culminates on the epiphany, “life feels really heavy if you give insignificant things too much credence. I don’t need a big budget. I don’t need popularity. I just need an outlet to share the beauty I see,” Oberhofer says.

“Let It Go” is preceded by the release of “What Does It Mean To Me?”, also featured on Smothered. The album follows a number of recent collaborations including co-writing fan favourite “4Runner” from Rostam’s latest LP, which Pitchfork called the “ecstatic peak” and Rolling Stone called “thrilling”.

Composer, producer, and musician from Brooklyn, NY and Tacoma, WA, now based in Los Angeles, Brad Oberhofer carved out his own milieu with Time Capsules II (2012) and Chronovision (2015). Turning heads, he garnered critical acclaim from Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, The Line of Best Fit, Consequence of Sound, Flood Magazine, Vice, and more in addition touring with Sleigh Bells, Beach House, and Matt & Kim and enchanting audiences at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, SXSW, and The Late Show with David Letterman.

Throughout 2020, he performed 115 consecutive nights of improvised piano on Instagram Live, with the sole objective of comforting lonely people during the pandemic. After years of touring with his band, producing its music and landing dozens of synch placements, Oberhofer has also established himself as an in-demand composer for film, television and advertisements, as well as performing as an instrumentalist on recordings by the likes of Katy Perry, King Princess, Moses Sumney, Amber Mark and others.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUNK VETERANS FACE TO FACE NEW ALBUM NO WAY OUT BUT THROUGH OUT NOW

“On ‘No Way Out But Through’, face to face channel 30 years of punk rock experience.” — SPIN

“With their arena-sized reach intact, ‘Farewell Song’ taps into more conventional
rock territory.” — FLOOD

STREAM: NO WAY OUT BUT THROUGH

FAT Wreck Chords and iconic West Coast rock band face to face are excited to release their new studio album No Way Out But Through. Mixed by Jason Livermore from The Blasting Room (NOFX, Rise Against, Descendents) and produced by Seigfried Meier, No Way Out But Through is a record that brims with intelligent songwriting, arena-sized choruses, big guitars, and a distinct musical fluidity that comes from playing together as a band for over 30 years.

face to face are a rarity in the music world: A band that not only helped define a sound, but who continue to fine-tune their music with each subsequent release. This is undoubtedly true of the band’s tenth full-length No Way Out But Through, a melodic-punk masterpiece teeming with blistering guitar riffs, fleet-fingered bass lines and vocal harmonies that are so infectious they’ll be rattling around your brain for weeks on end. Then again this should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed face to face’s 30-year history. The band—guitarist/vocalist Trever Keith, bassist/background vocalist Scott Shiflett, guitarist Dennis Hill and drummer Danny Thompson—once again reject complacency and push their musical limits on the follow-up to 2016’s return-to-form, Protection.

“This lineup of face to face has been intact for well over a decade at this point and it’s the best lineup the band has ever had,” Keith explains. “On ‘Protection’, I was intentionally writing songs that were reminiscent of our first three albums but on this album I was able to try some different things. There’s a freshness and a newness to the way that these songs came together, and I think that’s really evident when you’re listening to this album.” This connection and chemistry lies at the core of No Way Out But Through and is why the inherent energy on the album sounds so effortless.

No Way Out But Through sees Keith, who has always been known for his motivational anthems, penning some of his most introspective lyrics to date. “I wouldn’t consider this to be a concept album but I did base each song on a thematic idea this time around,” he explains. These themes range from overcoming anxiety to self-acceptance, ideas that have been a constant aspect of face to face’s mission statement as their sound has constantly evolved. “I really like writing songs that are motivational or inspirational on their face but ultimately have a message that helps people become a better version of themselves,” he adds.

While most bands celebrating their 30th anniversary are releasing reissues and retreading their past, face to face have crafted one of the most vital and energised albums of their career with No Way Out But Through. In fact, in many ways the album is the sound of a band hitting their stride with all cylinders firing. So what is the secret to face to face’s enduring vitality? “We’ve had our hiatus, we’ve made art records, we’ve made acoustic albums, but the best path for us has always been forward, and so here we are,” Keith summarises. “We may be in our fifties now but we wanted to send a message that we are not mellowing out and that this is energetic, hard-hitting punk rock. We’re full-steam ahead as a band and as songwriters.”

CYRUS SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘LOVE ONLINE’ ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP HAD, LOST OUT OCT 5

by the partae September 11, 2021
written by the partae

Sydney-based alt-pop producer and singer-songwriter CYRUS today shares his new single ‘Love Online’ and announces the release of his forthcoming debut EP had, lost, out Oct 5. Listen HERE, watch HERE.

Written almost immediately in the still-painful aftermath of the dissolution of a long-term relationship, CYRUS’ forthcoming debut condenses and chronologically charts the entire course of a relationship and its explosive breakdown, from initial infatuation to the moment of ruination and the ensuing process of closure. In this trajectory, ‘Love Online’, the closing track, represents the tentative first steps of moving on, the confusion felt at navigating new, unfamiliar terrain. With his lithe falsetto, thunderous electronic percussion, playful, shape-shifting production that encompasses iPhone keyboard clacking and message notifications, and a climactic, soaring guitar solo, CYRUS’ plea for a purer form of human connection that is unmediated by technology turns insecurities into something anthemic.

Of the new single, CYRUS shares: “‘Love Online’ is about my desire to prioritise communicating and sharing love, experiencing other people in real life as opposed to through a screen. It came about in the period of time between my breakup and the relationship that I’m in currently. I was on Instagram and dating apps trying to meet new people, just be single. And it would just be the same stuff over and over again. [I was] hoping for some sort of magical connection [but was] always falling flat.”

Following lead single ‘Facts’, ‘Love Online’ is the second track lifted from CYRUS’ forthcoming debut EP. had, lost arrives following a three-year hiatus from releasing music, the first project to be released under Cyrus Villaneuva’s latest moniker. During that interval, Villeneuva established himself as a highly-touted, much sought-after producer and co-writer, working alongside a slew of like-minded Australian alt-pop acts including Client Liaison, CXLOE, Glades, and more. Being thrown headfirst and wide-eyed into the spotlight as a teenager, CYRUS’ subsequent struggles with the lack of creative freedom and integrity has inculcated his latest music with a sense of deliberate self-reliance, imbued with matured self-awareness and a refined clarity of artistic vision.

‘Love Online‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

Kwame returns with ‘H I G H E R’ marking a new era in his artistic journey

by the partae September 11, 2021
written by the partae

Known to many as one of Australia’s breakout talents in recent years, Sydney based artist Kwame has continued to impress time and time again, with his thoughtful, forward thinking take on modern hip hop. With a multitude of accolades under his belt, including a j award for Unearthed artist of 2018 and FBi Smac Award for Best Song, Kwame has built on an ever-growing wealth of industry fanfare with support from the likes of Zane Lowe, and A$AP Ferg, who first thrust the young musician into the literal spotlight.

Now Kwame returns with ‘H I G H E R’ – his first solo release of the year, whilst promising an abundance of new music to follow throughout the remainder of 2021. From the outset, it is clear that ‘H I G H E R’ stands apart from Kwame’s impressive repertoire, not just sonically, but as the title so aptly suggests, as a higher form and more considered take on his artistry to date.

The refined self-produced soundscape is a gleaming interpretation of neo-soul,  hip hop, and electronica whilst layered with psychedelic elements that are designed to imitate the roller coaster of emotions and euphoria when one embarks on a new intimate relationship. It is through this that Kwame, with openness, describes the addictive and drug-like feel of intimacy that he encounters, alongside stimulating elation, gratification and wholeness.

Speaking on the ideation of the record, Kwame further shares “‘H I G H E R’ is a song that speaks on the euphoric nature of intimacy one in embarks on with their significant other, this was actually one of the first songs where after producing the instrumental, I just grabbed the mic and punched in the verses and chorus after every 8 bars or so. This was new and fun to me as I’m more used to sitting down and taking the time to write, whereas, this process here allowed me to just say whatever was on my mind at the time.”

Accompanying the release is a bold new music video featuring a stunningly suited up and inebriated Kwame. The clip opens with Kwame stumbling through the front door, putting on some beats, and getting in the zone as he sings about the excitement of a new love. The energy and euphoric dancing perfectly encapsulate the feeling following the perfect date that leaves you totally in awe of what might come.

Directed by Kwame and Zain Ayub, the duo have created a three-part series in which a wider story is told over a single night out, sharing “the concept of the video draws inspiration from the iconic dance scene in Risky Business featuring Tom Cruise. The film encapsulates my evolution as an artist by showcasing the growth and maturity in both the sonic qualities of my music as well as the visual aesthetic. We felt as though the choice of considered steady cam and widescreen would help captivate the audience, bringing them into the universe we created.”

The Kiwi born, Ghanian artist exploded onto the scene with an energy like no other, and has gone on to amass an incredible 23 million+ streams across his catalogue to date. Quickly earning the praise of triple j /  Unearthed, after uploading the equally powerful and anthemic single ‘WOW’, the independently released single went on to garner over 6 million streams alone, whilst more recently being synced for a global Apple commercial. Following it up with the acclaimed 2018 EP Endless Conversations., and 2020’s Please, Get Home Safe, Kwame’s name has become a staple with tastemaker support across Rolling Stone Australia, Red Bull, Acclaim, Music Feeds, NME, Junkee, Sniffers, Life Without Andy, Pilerats, Stoney Roads, and Purple Sneakers, amongst many others.

Marking a period of new beginnings, and a plethora of new music to follow, Kwame has set the tone for what is to be a significant year ahead.

Kwame’s new single ‘H I G H E R’ is out now on all streaming platforms.

HOMESHAKE New album Under The Weather out now!

by the partae September 11, 2021
written by the partae

Today, Toronto-based musician Homeshake, born Peter Sagar, shares his new album Under The Weather. Written in 2019, Under The Weather, is out via SHHOAMKEE / Sinderlyn / Remote Control Records and is Sagar‘s fifth studio album under the Homeshake moniker. The album is an atmospheric, 12-track reflection on life and depression, and documents a long, unrelenting period of sadness for the artist.

To coincide with the album’s release, a special line of Under The Weather products will be released in collaboration with LA-based streetwear brand Brain Dead, including an exclusive colour vinyl pressing, long-sleeve t-shirt, hoodie, hat, and rug.

The album’s release closely follows the Keith Rankin-directed video, ‘I Know I Know I Know,’ one of three singles shared in tandem with an animated visual, following ‘Passenger Seat,’ directed by Pete Sharp and ‘Vacuum,’ directed by Jordan Speer. Homeshake teamed up with aforementioned Brain Dead Studios, the producer for each of the videos, to create a cohesive visual universe around the record with the animations and forthcoming merchandise.

Unlike most of us, Peter Sagar — also known as Homeshake — was staying at home a lot, long before the pandemic. Sagar wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under the Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness. “I was in a deep, deep depression,” he recalls of that time period now. “Tours were breaking me. It was awful.” Sagar and his partner were living in Montreal and while everyone was out being social, he was inside listening to ambient music, binging Star Trek, and writing songs. (Sound familiar?) “It was a bit of a dark pit,” he says. “That’s kind of what the whole album is about.”

Under the Weather follows Sagar’s life and the depression that consumed him in 2019 — after a brief album intro, it jumps right into ‘Feel Better,’ a reflection on attempting to buck up when the weather outside is grim. The album is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line. In ‘Inaminit‘, Sagar cancels plans when he’s feeling low; the closing track, ‘Tenterhooks‘ sees Sagar’s deliverance into the depths of despair: “Feel myself drying up / feel myself turn into dust,” he sings over a funhouse mirror synth. “Oftentimes when you’re in a dark place, you’re supposed to journal and that helps release the pressure,” Sagar says. “For me, it always found its way into the music.”

Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper’s Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of “dry, pristine digital sound” that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the Homeshake project in the first place.

“I didn’t realise how much I missed having a second set of ears. It’s pretty invaluable,” Sagar says. He would send all the of tracks back and forth with Nathan over the course of 2019, which made the process a longer one than he was used to. “There are a lot of things that I probably wouldn’t have done that Lucas did do. I would tend to do a lot of softening of things, a lot of making everything super bassy and gentle. Lucas was aware that sometimes you needed some punch and grit.” To Sagar, those additions made the record what it is — a melodic, honest look at personal emotional struggle.

As Sagar readies it for release this September, the record he wrote about feeling isolated, alone, and despondent has begun to seem eerily prescient. “People will probably think that I made Under the Weather during or about Covid,” Sagar reflects now. “I was just already living my life that way.” For Sagar, the feelings he experienced over the course of that year are far from over — “I’ve been writing about feeling isolated my whole life,” he says — but with age, he has come to understand them better. “I had a fairly clear idea what the album was going to be like based on where I was emotionally at the time,” he says about Under the Weather. “I just try to make music that is honest about how I’m feeling.”

Today, King Krule releases his new live album You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down via XL Recordings / Remote Control Records and also shares an accompanying live film alongside the project’s release.

Mere weeks before the world went into lockdown, King Krule had performed a handful of European shows which featured tracks from his critically acclaimed third album Man Alive! Filmed by longtime collaborator and friend Reuben Bastienne-Lewis in Amsterdam and Paris during that short run of shows and other performances captured throughout the years, the near half-hour performance special offers fans a glimpse into a live tour that never was, while also reminding them of the artist’s unique stage presence and incredible performances delivered across his entire catalogue.

You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down features a setlist of 17 songs that span the acclaimed artist’s entire discography including fan favourites ‘Easy Easy,’ ‘Baby Blue,’ ‘Out Getting Ribs’ and more. In addition to the album’s digital release, the project is slated for a physical LP release on December 10th. A very limited amount of LP purchases will be bundled with an exclusive zine featuring tour and BTS photos curated by Archy.

“Once spilt into the cheap 4 tracks and pirate software, now collosos energy redeemed into small diaphragms. Sat on toilets imagining the moment other animals would sing the very vibrations back to them. Climbing a ladder of fulfilment, that fullfills neither need or want, but in ascent maybe the organised grouping of heartbeats pounding into the universe for an hour and a half would not be better spent. I felt comfortable for once, young and uncomfortable with a tunnel of anxiety to walk through.”

Watch the You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down live film below and stay tuned for more from King Krule coming soon.

Ministry of Sound celebrates their 30th Anniversary

by the partae September 11, 2021
written by the partae

Three Parties
Three Genres
Three Decades of Dance

IG / FB / Tiktok: @ministryofsoundclub
Twitter: @ministry_club
This September marks the 30 year anniversary of the opening of our London club, back in 1991. Inspired by New York’s cavernous house venues, our home was a derelict bus garage in South London. The first night had no alcohol, three flashing lights, moody security and unless you knew the names of at least half a dozen Chicago house DJs, you were never getting through the menacing, prison-like, gates.
Since then, Ministry of Sound has grown into one of the biggest electronic music brands in the world. Taking in an incredibly successful record label, global touring brand and most of all, cementing our London club as the most famous nightclub in the world.
To celebrate such a momentous occasion, we’re inviting you to a three-part celebration taking in all things Ministry of Sound. We’ve expertly curated three events championing each of the three main genres that have found a home in SE1.
Part 1 – Trance – Friday 17th September (Night)
Tickets
Friday nights at Ministry of Sound are synonymous with Trance, so we’ve assembled the very best names from Trance old and new. The legend, Paul Van Dyk will be doing a special ’30 years of electronic music set’.
PVD will be joined in The Box by trance heavyweights Aly & Fila, Will Atkinson and John Askew. Over in 103 former residents Judge Jules and Tall Paul head up a celebration of that big room sound that has soundtracked so many nights on Gaunt Street.
Lineup: Paul Van Dyk, Aly & Fila, Will Atkinson, John Askew, Judge Jules, Tall Paul, Paul Thomas, Lottie, Alex Anderson, Ryan Spicer & more
Part 2 – UKG – Saturday 18th September (Day)
Tickets
Next up in our triple-threat birthday, you can enjoy a full day of back to back old (and not so old) Skool UKG – a genre that grew out of Ministry of Sound afterparties before becoming one of the most loved sounds at the club.
We’ve got very special live guests Heartless Crew, joining an all-star team of UKG DJs including DJ Zinc, Todd Edwards B2B Majestic, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont, Zed Bias, Sunship, SHOSH, Martin ‘Liberty’ Larner and Perception.
Lineup: DJ Zinc, Todd Edwardsb2b Majestic, Matt ‘Jam’ Lamont, Zed Bias, Sunship, Heartless Crew & more
Part 3 – House – Saturday 18th September (Night)
Tickets
Finally, Saturday night will take us back to the earliest days of Ministry and the genre most intertwined with our thirty-year history. House music has been our first and most enduring love, so it’s only right that Saturday night sees us welcome back some of the best house selectors of the past three decades.
Few artists have made a bigger impact on house music over the last 30 years than Armand Van Helden, a bonafide legendary producer with a jaw-dropping back catalogue. Joining Armand are one of the biggest UK acts of the past three decades, Groove Armada, with fast-rising star Bellaire and the man who started it all, Ministry of Sound founder, Justin Berkmann. The rest of Saturday night will see our full team of residents bring 30 years of bangers to SE1.
Lineup: Armand van Helden, Groove Armada, Bellaire, The Menendez Brothers, Justin Berkmann, Fat Tony, Arielle Free, Jimmy Switch b2b Griff, Brian Summers, Matt Francey & more

’90s rave footage video by award-winning director Charlie Robins & rising London artist Jasper Tygner

NEWCOMER JASPER TYGNER COLLABORATES WITH AWARD-WINNING MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTOR TO RECAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF ‘90S RAVING

Director Charlie Robins has worked with household names Rudimental, Dusky, Jeshi, Emeli Sandé, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and Jessie Ware.

“The film is essentially a homage to those bleary-eyed, majestic nights out – particularly those old raves off the M25 from the early ‘90s,” Charlie enthuses. “Jasper’s music spoke to my soul and reminded me of the best times back in the day. The magic of a shared experience on the dance floor is something we have all been pining for, for way too long. This video was a chance to jog the memory and stir the spirits. We put a call for everyone to send in personal footage of them partying. We got some class bits from friends, family, as well my own personal phone stash (don’t judge) and specifically shot moments with Jasper and pals having an actual party. Add to that some archive reels from yesteryear and it became this crazy dreamlike madness.”

Stock footage of ravers embracing freedom and togetherness is interwoven with hazy shots of Jasper partying with his mates, and we’re left gripped by this shared need for escapism in both the past and the present. With clubs closed nationwide, footage of Britain’s storied rave movement fed Jasper Tygner’s creative drive during lockdown, with the result being an EP dipped in ‘90s euphoria.

Jasper explains: “That’s Too Slow was written mid-lockdown while inspiration was sparse so I turned to old ‘90s footage and photographs of the UK’s early raves. Searching for material from in and out of the club, the hazy walks back home, the groups of people chilling post rave and the ravers wandering around eager to keep going. After Charlie contacted me, I sent over the footage and photos I had cited for the track. The video really shows a journey through a night from start to end.”

Taken from Jasper’s post-rave-influenced ‘Eyes Open’ EP on London label Silver Bear Recordings, it follows singles ‘Kashmer’ and ‘Never Leave’, his first label signings, which bagged the emerging producer and multi-instrumentalist from North London high praise from Radio 1, 1Xtra and Radio 6 Music, while his Bedroom Rave studio sessions on Instagram went viral and captured the attention of dance heavyweights Bicep, DJ Seinfeld, KiNK and Tom Misch.

MAYA ROSE releases vibrant gender-inequality single ‘MIND THE GAP’

by the partae September 10, 2021
written by the partae

Maya Rose, R&B singer-songwriter from Castlemaine (Melbourne), says ‘Enough is enough’ in her new gender inequality single ‘Mind the Gap’ to be released on 17 September.

‘Mind the Gap’ is a powerful anthem supporting current global women’s movements.

22-year-old Maya Rose delivers the story of her experience as a female musician with a mature depth in her smooth soulful voice and strong lyrics, combining her signature 90s R&B inspired tone with Sade influenced pop/jazz, and a reggae groove you’ll want to get up and dance to.

Nominated for “Best Regional/Outer Suburban Act” Music Victoria Awards in 2019, Maya Rose has continued to build on her experiences as a writer and performer with regular gigs and live-stream events in Melbourne and regional Victoria. She has also been busy in the studio with producer Julian Steel (JAYDEAN, HANNAH, Blush’ko, JANEVA) unleashing ‘Mind the Gap’ as the first taste of her forthcoming second EP of introspective songs written in the 2020 lockdowns. Her debut single ‘See You Again’ and EP Time, released in 2019 in collaboration with Melbourne producers Jerome Farah (Baker Boy, KIAN) and Aman Bayatly (Adrian Eagle) received strong reviews, support from triple j unearthed and new audiences. “Lovely voice from Maya Rose on this moving record. Throwing back to some classic 90s R&B here!” Tommy Faith

This compelling new social/political side to Maya Rose grew from a place of feeling fed up with how women are treated, and wanting to speak about personal experiences. The opening of the song is set with the voices of female protestors chanting ‘my body, my choice’, creating a timely feeling of change. Maya Rose has created a song that will connect with women around the world.

“The song is about the gender gap, and female empowerment. It’s also about my experience of being a woman in the music industry. Many times I’ve felt I wasn’t being listened to or taken seriously as a woman, and couldn’t speak my mind. I’ve been excluded and unsupported in the industry by ‘boys’ clubs’. It’s time that we not only talk about the disadvantages women face every day in our community; it is important to express the issues creatively. I want to hear more messages of female empowerment in the music we consume. I’m releasing ‘Mind the Gap’, because ‘we’re still not equal yet.’” Maya Rose

Working with Melbourne-based producer Julian Steel, who brought to the sessions years of experience as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, provided an element of musicianship Maya Rose connected with profoundly. The track leans into live instrumentation with
laid back guitar, smooth tones of the saxophone, reggae nuisances in the organs and rhythm, and groovy bass.

“‘Mind the Gap’ has been a few years in the making. I’d been waiting for the right producer to work with and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to bring this to Julian. He really heard the song and connected to the meaning and musicality, developing the exact kind of sound I wanted. His production compliments the song beautifully.”

September will see Maya Rose launch her new single with a show in Melbourne and an online livestream event. Maya Rose is making a strong return with ‘Mind the Gap’ as her new single.

‘Mind the Gap’ is available on all streaming services. mayaofficial.com

OUTLND

by the partae September 10, 2021
written by the partae

We caught up with multitalented artist and producer Outlnd after the release of his latest record “Feel Love”, a stripped and raw R&B single.

Listen here: https://fanlink.to/Feel-Love

Your latest single “Feel Love” was released a month ago. Tell us about the single and your collaboration with JCAL.

The song is about the tribulations I went through over a breakup about a year ago. You go through so many emotions, especially after being with someone for so long, so writing it was almost like therapy for me. I just had to get these thoughts out of my head and voice it, for my own sanity.

I wrote it with JCAL in his studio and it came really naturally. I feel like he knew where I was at with the whole thing, so it was easy to put myself in that vulnerable state. I came into the session knowing I wanted to create something with the same darkness and emotion that this track ‘Feel’ by Sonder embodied – I played it for him and we just went from there.

I started off with this progression on the guitar and JCAL created this dark sonic landscape around it that built into this big, bass and drum-filled chorus. We just bounced off each other and got most of the song done in that session.

How would you explain your music style to a new listener?

At this time, I feel like I’d explain it as dark RnB. I draw a lot of influence from The Weeknd’s early work and ‘After Hours’, and I feel like that really comes out on ‘Feel Love’ through the falsetto and melancholy sonics.

What are some of your earliest musical memories?

The earliest memory I have is learning guitar with my grandmother. I was really young and I remember her picking me up after school and taking me to these lessons. Our teacher would run the lesson for both of us at the same time – looking back at it now, it was special to learn by her side. She was the only other person in my family that played an instrument and I remember her first sparking my intrigue with her playing piano for me.

What are some of your favorite records of all time?

My top two are ‘In Rainbows’ by Radiohead and ‘Blonde’ by Frank Ocean. I like projects that take you on this emotional journey. Storytelling through sonics as well as lyrics. I remember my dad playing ‘In Rainbows’ for me when I was younger on a drive south and just being taken to this place. It’s like you’re daydreaming but you’re still processing your senses into the daydream. It’s cool.

What does the next year have in store for you?

I’m going to release some songs that are different to what I’ve released before. Ones more of a summer baseline fueled track and the other really singer-songwriter, guitar-based. I feel like these are going to show these next stages I’m coming into as an artist.

If there is one piece of advice you’d pass on to an aspiring artist, what would it be?

Don’t try and sound like anyone else. I’ve only just come to this realization over the past year, and I feel like a lot of artists get stuck trying to sound like their favorite artist or someone they think they already sound like. That spot is taken, you need to walk your own path!

Finally, any shoutouts?

Keep eyes on ‘amor’, big things coming. September 17th.

R3HAB, Jonas Blue, Ava Max and Kylie Cantrall Team Up for “Sad Boy” as Next Single From R3HAB’s Forthcoming Studio Album

by the partae September 10, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: R3HAB, Jonas Blue
Title: Sad Boy (feat. Ava Max, Kylie Cantrall)
Label: APG

R3HAB, Jonas Blue, Ava Max, and Kylie Cantrall collide for the newest release – “Sad Boy,” a dance-pop crossover single that is both playful and uplifting. Opening with rhythmic instrumentals, the track evolves with undulating, dynamic basslines and euphonious melodies, perfectly showcasing R3HAB‘s and Jonas Blue‘s exceptional production skills. Global pop superstar Ava Max‘s bold, powerful voice adds a sultry and emotive touch to the lyrics, while the teenage lead star of Disney‘s “Gabby Duran & The Unsittables” Kylie Cantrall is the perfect complement in her post-Disney artist debut. “Sad Boy” follows the same sonic vein as R3HAB‘s recent “Runaway” with Sigala and JP Cooper as the second single on his upcoming studio album. Stay tuned for the next track from this talented veteran’s next project!

“This is one of those records where the pieces fell into place quickly. Ava and I connected when I remixed ‘EveryTime I Cry‘ a few months ago. I heard the idea for ‘Sad Boy‘ and knew I had to make the record. Her voice is powerful and bold and a pleasure to work with. I’m glad for the opportunity to create with Jonas, as we’ve only remixed each others’ work but haven’t collaborated. He brings an uplifting and fresh direction to every record. It’s been great working with Kylie as well, looking forward to seeing her artistic journey take off.” – R3HAB

“Collaborating with these amazing artists on ‘Sad Boy‘ has been a highlight of my year, I’ve been talking to R3HAB about doing something together for years, and after working with Ava last year on ‘My Head & My Heart,’ this was the perfect moment for us all to come together on a song. To have an exciting new talent like Kylie jumping on that second verse and killing it was the cherry on the cake.” – Jonas Blue

“Had a blast collaborating with R3HAB, Jonas Blue and Kylie on ‘Sad Boy‘. This song is all about having a crush on that dark, mysterious person people may not expect.” – Ava Max

“The first time I heard ‘Sad Boy‘ I thought I’d heard it before. It’s such a catchy song. There are so many contagious elements about it, the melody, that drop… Yeah, pretty much the whole thing! I couldn’t get it out of my head, I was singing it literally everywhere I went. So, when they asked me to jump on the song, I was like ‘What!?… Hell Yeah!’ I really feel super fortunate to get the chance to work with such insanely talented DJs/producers R3HAB and Jonas Blue, who are the best in the game! They could have stopped there, but once you add Ava Max on top of all that, I was literally at a loss for words. She’s such an incredible singer and performer, I feel honored to be on the song with her! The fact that I get to collaborate with these stars… needless to say, it definitely feels like a pinch-me moment.” – Kylie Cantrall

Dutch-Moroccan Multi-Platinum DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough remixes for Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, The Chainsmokers, Lady Gaga, to anthems such as Gold– and Platinum-certified “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” to his collaborations with the likes of Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul, ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Smokepurpp, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Astrid S, Olivia Holt and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game, whose work collected over 5B streams to date. In 2016 R3HAB founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which has passed 2B streams across all platforms since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, pushing the boundaries of dance music as he collaborates across genres and languages. In 2020 alone R3HAB celebrated over 900M Spotify streams. He is currently the most discovered artist on Spotify, one of Spotify’s top 150 most streamed artists across all genres worldwide, and ranked #13 on prestigious DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs chart. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

Jonas Blue‘s career has been felt the world over with singles like “Fast Car,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Rise,” “Mama,” and “Polaroid” collectively amassing almost 3,5B streams on Spotify alone and having been certified Platinum over 120 times around the globe. With over 13B global streams, Jonas has cemented his name as the main stage DJ and pop powerhouse. 2018 was a landmark year. He released “Rise” featuring Jack & Jack, which was one of the summer’s biggest global hits, and owned the autumn with “Polaroid” – his highly-anticipated collab with Liam Payne and Lennon Stella. The success of both hits was sandwiched between “Back & Forth” with Becky Hill and Detroit house legend MK. Debut album “Blue” soon followed, the recipient of the Brit Certified Breakthrough Award and later gold status. Jonas has made his mark on Ibiza, having performed at hotspots Ushuaïa, Cafe Mambo, and has successfully hosted his Electronic Nature residency at superclub Hï Ibiza. Following on from hits “Mistakes” and “Naked” in 2020, “Something Stupid” featuring AWA and ‘Hear Me Say‘ featuring LEON kicked off his 2021 in style, smashing their way into homes worldwide as Jonas continues to inspire, uplift and spread his message of global positivity. As we see a return to live performances in 2021, Jonas joins the likes of Tiësto and Zedd as a resident DJ at Zouk in Las Vegas.

Ava Max is nothing short of a global sensation with massive hits such as “Sweet But Psycho,” “Kings & Queens,” “Salt,” “So Am I,” and “My Head & My Heart” contributing to over 100 Diamond, Platinum and Gold certifications globally! The pop star’s debut album “Heaven & Hell” achieved its RIAA Gold Certification upon release as well as numerous other certifications around the world. Crafting pop anthems with a much-needed dose of fiery female empowerment, the singer has amassed over 9,5B streams and 4B video views to date. The daughter of Albanian immigrants channels the imaginations and aesthetics of forebears like Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani. Ava Max is a unique talent, blessed with a seismic voice, an individualistic high fashion mindset, and an undeniable knack for cinematic, theatrical popcraft.

Kylie Cantrall is a 16-year-old American singer, dancer, and actress. She is currently most known for playing Gabby Duran in the Disney Channel television series “Gabby Duran & The Unsittables.” Thanks to her collaboration with stars like Zendaya and releasing music videos through Disney Channel Voices, including “Feeling Some Kinda Way,” which amassed over 15M views, Cantrall went on to become one of the youngest artists to achieve fame across the United States. With nearly 5M TikTok followers and over 500K Instagram followers, Kylie is poised to make her post-Disney artist debut with the single “Sad Boy.”

Brisbane’s CHEAP DATE unveil striking and open new single ‘WOMAN TO YOU’

by the partae September 10, 2021
written by the partae

Returning to build upon a strong introduction made in June, indie rock group Cheap Date serves up a stunning new single, ‘Woman To You’. Gorgeously layered, balancing light and shaded tones with ease, ‘Woman To You’ is a perfect way for the Brisbane group to take another stride forward in making their presence known to more fans.

The track is dreamy in that Hatchie, Julia Jacklin way; while the production and warm ambience the music conjures gives us beautiful ‘90s soft rock-pop energy.

Like their debut single ‘Beside Me’, ‘Woman To You’ is emotionally charged; the lyrics offer an insight into a perspective many listeners may be able to relate to.

“‘Woman To You’ is a song that I wrote as a way to express and come to terms with my sexuality as a young adult. I had spent my whole teenage life convinced that I would grow up, get a job, find a husband, build that white picket fence and have kids. ‘Beside Me’  was written about the last real relationship I had with a man before coming out as bisexual. This song is the follow up to that. It is really an expression of obsession. Which sounds a bit creepy….but I mean it in the most innocent way. I was suddenly allowing myself to feel and think about women in a way that felt natural and inherently like my true self.”
Cheap Date, Lara Dee

The band, led by Lara Dee, has courted the attention of tastemaker outlets and Triple J Unearthed early, with reviews commending the band for their handle on emotional nuance and their blend of musical influences. As they move on through 2021, Cheap Date are revealing more about their artistry, and are excited for more new fans to become acquainted with their unique style.

Happy Magazine

“Fell so hard for this. This is a great song. It’s emotionally strong, self aware and I love the way it lifts off. It’s charged and has great space in the atmosphere…”
Triple J, Claire Mooney

“I love it when a good band name is backed up by a damn good song. What a debut! There’s some biting but relatable lyrics delivered among a mix of dreamy space and pace.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne

“Cheap Date deliver joyful melancholy with their impressive debut single, ‘Beside Me’.”
Beat Magazine

“Needless to say we’ll be paying close attention to these Aussies from here on out. Cheap Date have made an incredibly strong, instantly memorable start with ‘Beside Me’, and we can’t wait to hear what they have in store for us as the year progresses.”

Teether & Kuya Neil release new single ‘Addy’ feat. Sevy

RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘ADDY’ (FEAT. SEVY)

TAKEN FROM UPCOMING MIXTAPE GLYPH
OUT NOVEMBER 5 ON CHAPTER MUSIC

Today, Naarm/Melbourne duo Teether & Kuya Neil release the first single ‘Addy‘, featuring Sydney MC Sevy, from an upcoming mixtape GLYPH due on November 5 via Chapter Music. They also share a great self-made video.

Here’s what Teether & Neil have to say about the track: “Addy came from conversations on our experiences as people born of migrants. To observe the parallels and differences can unveil unfortunate truths and necessary comforts. It felt right to invite Sevy to join us on this song, who in addition to being one of our favourite artists, shares ancestral roots to Teether.”

When rapper Teether & producer Kuya Neil began to collaborate in late 2020, two powerful forces in the Melbourne underground came together to create something rare and special.

At 25, Teether already has a deep dive catalogue of solo releases to his name, largely released via the X Amount collective of which he is a founding member. There are also collaborative projects like Too Birds and even atmospheric metal bands stretching back to the early 2010s.

Kuya Neil is just as prolific. His CV ranges from collaboration with local heroes Papaphilia and Various Asses, to membership of NZ “family rap ensemble” Fanau Spa, to his work with Melbourne Sound School.

Together, Teether & Kuya Neil make future-focused rap informed by modern club styles like footwork, gqom and bass music. Teether’s nonchalant but vivid words infuse Neil’s disorientating, hyper-modern production.

They’ve had support from Triple J, Unearthed, FBI Radio and Triple R, and press coverage in Brooklyn Vegan, Acclaim Mag, NME Australia, Troublejuice, Verve Zine and more.
