FRENCH FOR RABBITS SHARE “THE OUTSIDER” AHEAD OF UPCOMING ALBUM THE OVERFLOW OUT NOVEMBER 12

by the partae September 24, 2021
written by the partae
“Their music’s beating heart is often shrouded by atmospherics and mystique, and they seem to operate under the rightful assumption that a well-placed whisper can be as powerful as dramatically belting it out.” – Stereogum

“Lovely and poignant…cutting lament with a serene, wintry wistfulness for the way things were, and a stoic resignation that they’ll never be the same.” – Gorilla vs. Bear

French for Rabbits – the New Zealand-based, ethereal dream-pop project helmed by singer-songwriter Brooke Singer – are sharing “The Outsider,” the delicate and warm third single to be released from the group’s forthcoming album, The Overflow, on September 24th. The song follows on the heels of LP standouts: “Ouija Board” and the titular-track, “The Overflow.”Speaking on the origins of the song, Singer writes, “I wrote ‘The Outsider’ in the USA in 2019 with Marc Orrell (Dropkick Murphys) and Brooke Johnson. I’d been invited by a friend to a party not long after I landed in Los Angeles – a swimming pool, palm trees, musical heroes of mine (who were, of course, actually just lovely, interesting people). I’m quite a shy person, and the culture shock of coming into this from my normally quiet life in Wellington was real! The song is about being that introvert at a party, inhibitions and trying to fit in.”

The music video for “The Outsider,” just one of four films produced for the album, was shot in Christchurch, NZ, and was co-directed by Singer and her good friend and collaborator, Martin Sagadin, while Julian Vares handled the cinematography.

Singer, writing on her aesthetic inspiration for the video, recalls “…[we] wanted the film to have a 90s American movie aesthetic. My mum and I went searching out a street to film on, and came across this beautiful tree lined street. We also staked out the street the day before filming, trying to figure out when the street lights turned on, because I had an idea for a shot where as I walked past the street light…it would turn on. That turned out to be far too hard – but we did it with a candle instead in one of the shots.”

Together French For Rabbits have released three records – New Zealand Music Award nominated EP Claimed by the Sea; Spirits, which includes the poetic and emotive singles “Goat” and “The Other Side;” and The Weight of Melted Snow.

They’ve toured in the US and Europe, opening for acts such as Lorde, Agnes Obel and performed at SXSW, Iceland Airwaves, WOMAD and in a castle for a fan’s wedding in Switzerland. Despite racking up millions of streams and seeing their music appear in shows from Vampire Diaries to Being Human, the band have remained close to their DIY roots co-running local label Home Alone, and performing in various other bands in their Wellington home-town.

Their forthcoming new album The Overflow is due out November 12, 2021 via AAA Records (AUS/NZ) in conjunction with Reckless Yes (UK) and A Modest Proposal (Italy).

Maya Rose

written by the partae

What’s been happening since we last spoke?

Since my debut single ‘See You Again’, I released my debut EP Time, in 2019, in collaboration with Melbourne producers Jerome Farah (Baker Boy, KIAN) and Aman Bayatly (Adrian Eagle) which received strong reviews, support from triple j unearthed and new audiences, and I was nominated for “Best Regional/Outer Suburban Act” Music Victoria Awards 2019. I continued to build my experience as a performer with regular gigs in Melbourne and regional Victoria, then during 2020 lockdowns I spent a lot of time writing new songs and did live-stream events. This year I’ve been busy in the studio with producer Julian Steel (JAYDEAN, HANNAH) releasing ‘Mind the Gap’ as the first taste of my upcoming second EP.

Your new single ‘Mind Gap’ is out now, how does this track relate to women’s current global movements?

The opening of the song is set with the voices of female protestors chanting “my body, my choice” and I sing about the issue of getting unwanted attention from men, connecting with the ‘Me too’ movement. There is an overrepresentation of men in the music industry which means “He’s making decisions for me; he’s leaving me out”. “He don’t have to dress up before leaving the door” touches on the different expectations put on male and female artists. A man can be on stage in a t-shirt and jeans without judgement. But women in the music industry have been marketed through sexualisation for so long that when an artist doesn’t adhere to this, it’s hard to sell them.
I also address the gender pay-gap in the track “He be out here making more than me; Even though I work just as hard” – statistically women will earn 20% less than her male peers in Australia. At the end of the song, I declare the motto, “Enough is enough”.

Please tell us about this new social/political aspect to your music:

‘I won’t be quiet about it’ and ‘we’re still not equal yet’ focus on female empowerment, females having more of a voice and developing confidence, what has influenced this new direction in your music?

Women in music, the ‘Me Too’ movement, and Brittany Higgens speaking out publicly with the help of more women in the media now, supporting her, influenced me. I really believe that encouraging young girls to have confidence to pursue the path of their choice, and to speak up about injustices, builds resilience and determination. Even when there are knockbacks, if women have the self-belief and strength of character to persevere they will be unstoppable in whatever they choose to do.

What was the process behind developing the production ideas/concepts for ‘Mind the Gap’?

I wrote ‘Mind the Gap’ a couple of years ago and was looking for a female producer to work with on the track but it was hard to find one as male producers outnumber female producers 47 to one. I needed someone who would best suit the style and understand the genre. Earlier this year I began to work with Melbourne producer Julian Steel. We combined my signature 90s R&B inspired tone and Sade influenced pop/jazz: the smooth tones of the saxophone, with Julian’s live instrumentation of laid-back guitar, reggae nuisances in the organs and rhythm, and groovy bass.

You have been writing and recording during lockdown, how did you go about writing the music?

I write all my music from home at my keyboard. The concept behind ‘Mind the Gap’ started by wanting to write about a global social/political topic. I usually write from personal experiences, as a healing process, but I wanted to say something that had a bigger meaning to a bigger audience. The song grew from a place of feeling fed up with how women are treated by some men, but also how the topic relates to me personally. And I think more anthem songs are needed. I was inspired by 60s and 70s revolution songs, about civil rights and women’s liberation. Songs like Helen Reddy’s ‘I am Woman’ and Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ were influences for ‘Mind the Gap’.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

I recorded ‘Mind the Gap’ in Melbourne, in 2021, with producer Julian Steel and Panorama Mixing & Mastering mastered the track.

How did you approach the recording process?

As I’m in regional Victoria, I had to go to Melbourne for four recording sessions with Julian over a six-month period because of lockdowns. Firstly, Julian laid down the live drums, organs, bass and guitar. I came in for two sessions, one for the main vocals and another for the backing vocals. I got Bella Winter to feature on saxophone in a separate recording. We had one last session to add the final touches such as the protestors chanting.

What’s it been like living and being a musician in regional Victoria (Castlemaine) and commuting to Melbourne for recording and performing?

I grew up in Castlemaine, a great arts community, and I love the space and quiet here. However, as a musician, the amount of venues are limited and there are less opportunities to progress my career. I’ve been lucky to not have been in as many lockdowns as Melbourne but it’s hard to build momentum as a performer as most of the gigs and work I need to do as a musician relies on going to Melbourne. It can be tiring going back and forth but I enjoy the scenery on the drive and listening to music in the car. I’m very grateful to have the cultural centre so close to me. It’s very rewarding going to the city to develop my career.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021 going into 2022?

When things open up and I can get down to Melbourne next I will finish the recording and production of the remaining songs on my upcoming EP. I’ll be releasing another single and the EP hopefully late this year or early 2022. Can’t wait for you to hear it!

How was it recording your second EP of introspective songs written in the 2020 lockdowns?

During 2020 I had to find non-public ways to express myself creatively. There was a lot to process about the pandemic and it was hard not being able to see my partner because of lockdowns, and losing a loved one. I got through this time by putting these stories into songs. I turned my wardrobe into a vocal booth and recorded and self-produced a song about struggling through these unprecedented times. I released ‘Home’ last year and filmed moments spent at home to accompany the song. Recording the other songs I’d written during 2020 with Julian in Melbourne and actually being back in a studio was pretty special.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to Sinead Harnett, Snoh Aalegra, Little Simz and Victoria Monét.

Sydney’s SARAH YAGKI releases striking new single ‘REWIND’

by the partae September 23, 2021
written by the partae

Local vocal powerhouse Sarah Yagki returns today with the announcement of her new single, the personal alt-R&B/pop single ‘Rewind’.

The release of the track follows on from a trio of single releases from the Sydney artist; music that has demonstrated Sarah’s matured songwriting talents and the development of her own unique voice.

Unafraid to go deep with her lyricism and match that lyricism with equally as compelling music, Sarah’s new single is her most open and raw offering to date.

Co-produced by Ethan Reginato and Sarah’s longtime collaborator Obseen, ‘Rewind’ centres on a toxic relationship. Sarah approaches the content with vulnerability and sensitivity, though through the music, there’s renewed strength that shines above it all.

“‘Rewind’ is a song about getting so deeply caught in a toxic relationship, that you are stuck rewinding memories and moments that are trapped in a cycle. The process of making this was an extremely personal one, and I wanted to capture – to the best of my ability – a track from my own experiences, and one that others could relate to for such a highly sensitive topic.”
Sarah Yagki

Coming after singles like ‘Can’t Hardly Lie’, ‘Shared Eyes’ and ‘This Won’t Hurt’, a song like ‘Rewind’ fits this wider narrative of growth and development that Sarah has been articulating.

“What I am trying to capture is a sound that is authentic, unique and blends a sense of strength and vulnerability.”
Sarah Yagki

PRAISE FOR SARAH YAGKI

“Her music is simultaneously raw and explorative; it’s rooted in pop, but reaches far wider.”
Happy Magazine

“It’s a warm dose of pure indie pop, opening with some deep but powerful building ballad style vocals with some rich and lush production.”
AAA Backstage

“Emotional vibes on this one from Sarah. It’s put together pretty solidly with a steady-cruising production and some rich and lush production.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

Today, Sunniva Lingård aka Sassy 009 announces her mixtape Heart Ego (out October 22 via Luft Recordings), alongside the crystalline and hard-edged ‘Mystery Boy‘ single and video. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

“Heart Ego is the most ambitious project I’ve done so far in my career, yet the project I have had the most trouble defining. Framing it as a mixtape was like finding home. The actual structuring and understanding of my compositions is simply a result of how I think it should feel, and not necessarily in line with a structure someone else completely understands,” explains Sassy 009 on her new project.

Those who’ve followed the path of Oslo-based Sassy 009 and the constantly fluid, blurred edges of her hallucinogenic pop, will know that she’s an artist that follows emotion and mood, over strict narrative and composition. Through 2019’s EP KILL Sassy 009 and subsequent tracks, including a collaboration with Clairo, Lingård’s pushed the project through re-imagined techno, breathy Scandi-pop and hyper R&B in a way that suggests an artist as excited as the listener to hear what might come next – as if each track acts as its own sandbox within which Lingård’s allowed to play in.

The accompanying video finally gives an insight into Sassy 009‘s other passion: hitting the slopes with her badass all-female skate/snowboard crew Sensesse. The footage follows Sunni and her pals performing their favourite winter hobby and majestically gliding through the mountain tops of Norway. WATCH ABOVE and stay tuned for Heart Ego.

THE VANNS announce uplifting new single ‘FEELS GOOD NOW’

by the partae September 22, 2021
written by the partae

Following on from the successful release of ‘Red Light’ in April, South Coast legends The VANNS present an uplifting new cut in ‘Feels Good Now’.

Powered by beautiful guitars and production, buoyed by Jimmy Vann’s rich vocals and executed perfectly by the rock four-piece, ‘Feels Good Now’ is an enriching listen.

Focused on the struggle to, and eventual acceptance, of changing your life for the better, ‘Feels Good Now’ is wrapped up in an uplifting arrangement and is basically what the title suggests.

Like ‘Red Light’ before it, ‘Feels Good Now’ came out of sessions The VANNS did with producer Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Ruby Fields) at The Music Farm.

“The song was originally meant to finish with a fade out, but we were having too much fun playing it for it to end so soon. We wrote (and I use that term loosely) the jam at the end of the song at the last minute, before we got in the studio and tracked it.

Thematically, ‘Feels Good Now’ is about taking a risk on something that you feel needs to change in your life despite any anxieties, apprehensions, and reasons why you tell yourself you shouldn’t; and actually pulling it off and feeling all the better for it. It’s a good feeling, hence the title; we can’t bloody wait to play this one live!”
The VANNS, Cameron Little

Working with their tour manager and best mate Jules Bourne, as well as DP Surfboards and videographer Sam Tolhurst, The VANNS made sure that the ‘Feels Good Now’ music video came through strong with visuals that would make any of us watching yearn for warmer days and the ability to be out in the surf.

Taking footage supplied by DP Surfboards and Tolhurst, Jules edited the video; a way for The VANNS to throw their support behind Australian talent and more importantly, their local community.

“As we have been in lockdown for a bunch of weeks now and unable to get together as a band it was proving impossible to get a film clip together for ‘Feels Good Now’. I wanted to collab with a local business and show support in any way we could in these uncertain times and my local surf shop, DP Surfboards, were more than keen to help us out with some epic footage for the clip. The footage was from all around the world and from some epic local spots.

Support your local! Go check out DP Surfboards and keep an eye out for Sam’s film Pyrophytic, which he is working on with local surfer Brett Connellan.”
THE VANNS, Jimmy Vann

Throughout the last year and a half, The VANNS have proven their resilience and strength as a band. Utilising the momentum the release of their breakthrough debut album Through The Walls spurred, The VANNS formed for themselves a strong reputation as live performers around the country.

Reaping industry acclaim including the lucrative triple j Feature Album and Like A Version series, the band easily converted the praise and stock being invested in them by tastemakers and respected outlets into a beloved show that has gone on to sell well over 6000 tickets across the nation and accrue over 10 million streams to date on all platforms.

And while touring may be on pause for now, The VANNS’ newest release serves as a reminder that when audiences and band can gather together again, there’s a lot of fun to catch up on.

PRAISE FOR THE VANNS

“It’s got groove and this epic wave of sound too. Bloody damn great to have you back with more music legends!”
Triple J, Claire Mooney (‘Red Light’, 2021)“This makes for one hella groovy follow up to your bloody fantastic debut album. I love the playful percussion and those gritty guitars cutting through toward the end. I love everything about you guys!”
Triple J, Bridget Hustwaite (‘Red Light’, 2021)

“Smack bang in the centre of a venn diagram between ‘grandiose rock anthems that not even stadiums could hold’, ‘fervently passionate authenticity’ and ‘infectious larrikin spirit that makes them impossible to hate’, THE VANNS deserved every second of their monolithic breakthrough at the turn of the decade.”
Australian Guitar Magazine

“…a strong, slick and inviting sound that just begs to be heard live.”
The AU Review

“…the four-piece have grown to become a quintessential name to the Australian rock scene and the many pockets of brilliance it contains.”
Pilerats

‘Feels Good Now’ is out now.

Fiz returns with warm new single Ripe, a love letter to sunshine, good friends and grapefruit

by the partae September 21, 2021
written by the partae

Overflowing with love and a belly full of fruit, Brunswick local ray of sunshine Fiz drops cozy new track Ripe. Full of warm tones and fruity riffs, the release plants her as one of the country’s most intriguing new artists.

Following her debut single ‘Orange’, Ripe speaks on the rare moments of clarity where we remember everything will be okay, and reminds it’s listeners to reflect on the people (and animals) who we hold closest to our hearts.

Produced by Alex Moses, this indie-folk daydream is as charming and citrusy as ever. It will no doubt be the soundtrack helping you slow down and sit back while melodic whistles guide you through a stream of poetic lyrics.

Fiz and her wonderful new band are warming up for a launch show to pair with the new track to be announced in the coming weeks.

EMILY PERRY RELEASES FIERCE NEW SINGLE ‘FOCUSED’

by the partae September 21, 2021
written by the partae
Whether she’s giving all of her emotions and dedication to a song she’s working on, or her time and energy to the fans who come see her shows, Perry is showing the whole world what she can do.
– Substream Magazine

Returning from the big smoke of Los Angeles, Sydney-born power pop songstress, Emily Perry brings us her latest single ‘Focused‘.

An infectious pop tune, ‘Focused’ uses powerful, heavy beats while showcasing the layers of Emily’s silky vocals. Expect juicy synths and glossy harmonies, as Emily Perry oozes an unapologetically fierce and flirty attitude through her lyrics. “We were writing this song almost as an anthem of confidence for all my ladies out there. At the same time, I was low-key writing these lyrics to empower myself,” explains Emily.

Working with a team of industry heavyweights, Emily has collaborated with Grammy Award winning producers whose star-studded resumés include the likes of Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown, Pink and Kelly Clarkson. With three Billboard chart hits and a top ten appearance on the UK Commercial Pop chart under her belt, Emily’s music has exploded internationally, playing loud and proud in clubs and festivals worldwide.

Emily is certainly no stranger to the stage either. As a double-threat professional dancer, Emily has been electrifying stages across North America as a part of her solo Summer On Lock Tour and selected Pride Festival shows, seeing her perform to crowds of 20,000.

Channeling her femme fetale influences, Tinashe, Dua Lipa and Kehlani, Emily Perry’s irresistible bops are an  essential addition to your next party playlist. With more danceable, confident and down-right fun releases planned for 2021, it’s time to focus on Emily Perry.

Thunder Fox

by the partae September 21, 2021
written by the partae

What made ‘Not For Sale’ the natural fit for Thunder Fox to come out the gate with, as an insight to the new album?

We felt that “Not For Sale” was a great introduction to the record as we were able to inject some of the new sounds we’ve been leaning into whilst maintaining Thunder Fox’s signature groove. Consider “Not For Sale” a tantalised little toe dipped in the chocolate river that is “Sanctuary” and, if it’s warm enough, everybody will wanna dive in.

What were your inspirations for the music we’re about to hear on the full album?

I think one of Thunder Fox’s biggest drawcards is the eclecticism we try to maintain throughout all of our projects. It can be a blessing and a curse that the five of us come from such a myriad of musical backgrounds and influences so, with Sanctuary, we wanted to try our best to create a cohesive record whilst holding on to our eclectic magic. Instead of drawing so much from musical influences, we aimed to paint a picture conceptually, touching on topics that were prevalent in our lives at the time and trying to hold on to it for the most part of the album.

Describe how this record captures the vibe of the band moving forward into 2022?

This record is a display of our metamorphosis after a number of line-up changes and a ton of development over the last couple of years. With our sound maturing, we’re also becoming more confident on the production side of things and enjoying being more creative in the box rather than just trying to excel at our instruments. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a wild ride but, when I listen to Sanctuary, it sounds like Thunder Fox is all grown up. I think it can only be yet another milestone towards our eventual world domination.

What have you been enjoying the most about creating music with Thunder Fox?

When I think of the benefits of music creation in the band, I could go on for hours about how cathartic and life-altering it all can be. With that said, a couple of things really stand out. Firstly, there’s a magnetic kind of fulfilment that I always chase when I try to sing better, play better or write better lyrics. I can never quite reach the end goal but soldiering on towards it every day is my dream come true. I always want to outdo whatever I did last time. With that said, when it all comes down to it, even if the music sucked it would all be worth it for the camaraderie and friendship I’ve found with my bandmates and Dan, our engineer/producer wizard. I love the guys with all of my heart and had the time of my life writing and recording in our little Nambucca Air BnB over a couple of weeks. It was pure bliss.

It’s been a bizarre time for musicians to stay creative – how has Thunder Fox managed to keep it together over the last year and a half?

There’s no doubt the past couple of years have been incredibly taxing and, it would be easy to say all of the drama just gives us more fuel to write and record awesome songs about how fucked life is but, it ain’t always that easy. I think being in such a state of limbo, isolated and bored can often lead me, personally, to a place of genuine languishing. In that state I can lose motivation so quickly and I feel I can’t write beautiful things when I’m in such a potato state. It comes and goes in waves though and, if anything, I’m just so proud to have achieved or created anything at all during all this craziness, let alone the best album of all time.

CARWASH SOUNDTRACKS ADOLESCENCE AND PANDEMONIUM WITH DEBUT EP SOAP WATER OUT NOW, LISTEN TO ‘FRIENDSHIP’

yet specific enough to identify with, his music evokes nostalgia with ease”

Los Angeles Times

“A swell of emotional turmoil that is difficult not to immediately get swept up in”
Ones to Watch

20-year-old multi-instrumentalist and multi-disciplinary artist Garrett Seamans today shares soap water, the debut EP from his latest emo-tinged DIY pop project, carwash. LISTEN HERE.

Bringing together previous singles ‘boyfriend, girlfriend‘ and ‘racetrack‘, soap water chronicles the transformation of close friendship into young love, evocatively capturing the fluctuating emotions of hesitant, demure uncertainty, and passionate surety that contour this chrysalis. On opener ‘friendship‘ and lead single ‘racetrack‘, his ardour expresses itself through emotive bursts of crunched-out, reverb-laden electric guitars, and flurries of wistful, nostalgic melodies, channeling the pangs and pulls of adolescent desire, combining coastal haziness with the yearning of second-wave emo and the arena-sized relatability of contemporary bedroom pop in sweeping, lovelorn pushes. At the center lies second single ‘racetrack‘, Seamans‘ half-murmured, multitrack vocals, lingering, atmospheric instrumentation and strummed, raw-mic’d acoustic guitar painting unhurried, unspoken intimacy in lo-fi tones reminiscent of Alex G and Florist. And elsewhere, as on ‘a big tree in a giant green field‘ and closer ‘at least i lived it with you‘, carwash fashions delicate, fleeting vignettes of emotion where ghostly samples – snippets of field recordings and voice memos – float in and out of the mix and languid, plucked guitars impart the vulnerability of stripping yourself completely bare.

soap water was born during the seemingly endless, listless hours of lockdown-induced monotony: a cycle of wake, record, aimlessly plod around the neighbourhood, record some more, and repeat that produced a cache of demos originally intended for Seamans‘ ears only, for his own amusement and sanity as he whiled away the hours. The five tracks collected on soap water give a soundtrack to these two peculiar periods of life – the pandemic and adolescence; each of them ache acutely with the missing presence of human connection and yearn nostalgically for simpler times, looking to both the past and the future, as Seamans imparts stories of navigating life via friendship and his lyricism bristles with the uncertainty of an ambiguous future.

Accompanied by a short film co-directed by Seamans and an old friend, soap water: the movie brings the narrative push and cinematic soundscapes of carwash‘s debut EP to poignant visual life, due to be released shortly following the EP and premiered at an independent San Diego cinema, one of Seamans’ favourite haunts growing up. Written as a hangout movie, the short film zeroes in on one day in the life of a teenager who yearns desperately for his first kiss, capturing the fragile, fleeting moments of adolescence, where carefree abandon collides with the impending obligations of dawning adulthood, soundtracked by the music of carwash.

MOOR MOTHER RELEASES NEW ALBUM ‘BLACK ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF THE AIR’

WATCH NEW DOUBLE VIDEO FOR “MADE A CIRCLE” AND “MANGROVE”

“Like a blossom emerging from between the floorboards of a slaughterhouse, Moor Mother’s music is an act of transcending a violent, intolerable present.” – The Fader

“An innovative synthesis of beats, cacophony, and lyricism dealing with Afrofuturism, collective memory, spiritual journeys, and a hundred other deep-cut influences and sources of creative inspiration.” – AV Club

“ ‘Black Encyclopaedia of the Air’ functions as a musical Trojan horse, disguising painful narratives as a polished gift.” – Pitchfork

The Philadelphia-based artist Moor Mother – AKA Camae Ayewa – has digitally released her critically acclaimed new album ‘Black Encyclopedia Of The Air’, her first for ANTI- Records.

Listen to the album and pre-order vinyl and CD, set for an October 22 release, HERE.

Moor Mother is a holographic figment of an Afrotopian dream, all at once goddess and warrior, mystic and cyborg, griot and future time traveler, etching noisy pieces of reverie into our consciousness.

In honour of today’s album release Moor Mother has shared a double video for the album tracks “Made A Circle” and “Mangrove”. Directed by Bob Sweeney and shot in Brazil, the clip highlights the juxtaposition of the brighter “Made A Circle” and the dark, moodier track “Mangrove”.

Watch it HERE.

“Moor Mother’s talent for creating layers of dynamic, textural noise to complement the music and lyrics never leave a track feeling hollow, instead lending each one a sense of perpetual cosmic expansion,” said Paste Magazine of her new songs. Ayewa also recently spoke with Pitchfork about the album’s ability to simultaneously explore themes of racial strife and female trauma while also being her most accessible music to date.

Recorded at home in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, ‘Black Encyclopaedia Of The Air’ is the work of Moor Mother and soundscape artist and producer Olof Melander. Extra beats and ideas from their collaboration on the project jazz codes turned into a document more beautiful and exploratory than the initial compilation of cast-off songs they’d intended. As with any Moor Mother release, a multitude of instruments and voices flocked to the ether to create something strange and unknown, a time-travellers guide to the modern world.

THUNDER FOX ENTER NEW ERA WITH DARK SINGLE ‘NOT FOR SALE’ SYDNEY GROUP ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM SANCTUARY – OUT IN NOVEMBER

by the partae September 20, 2021
written by the partae

With the release of their new studio album Sanctuary later this year, Sydney’s Thunder Fox are coming back on to radars with a new sound. It’s a sound that still remains core to the band’s original sonic identity: an effortless blend of pop, soul, R&B and indie, but also dives deep into some great new influences.

From the record, the band shares its first single – ‘Not For Sale’ – a dynamic example of the creative high the band has been on throughout the production and recording of the album as a whole.

‘Not For Sale’, recorded by Thunder Fox in Nambucca Heads, was mixed by Daniel Willington (Iluka, Good Lekker) and mastered by Steve Smart (Tash Sultana) at Sydney’s Studios 301. The song is also an early example of the-new Thunder Fox member Casey Allan’s input on bass. Throughout the entirety of Sanctuary, the listener gets a great grasp on how the creative dynamic between the band members has galvanised; making ‘Not For Sale’ a prime single to lead with.

“‘Not For Sale’ is our introduction to Thunder Fox’s new sound. Casey, being a relatively new addition to the band at the time, brought with him a synth bass and a set of fingers carved by the Gods. Man, he had such a groove on that pile of plastic, the rest of us were floored. We wanted to write something dark, but funky (duh), and bad boy Casey had just the stuff.

The lyrics here are also self-explanatory: I know I’m not the only one who had it etched into their brain early on, by social media among other sources, that success and happiness is defined by finance, followers and fame. Damn, we were wrong. Sometimes we lose ourselves so immensely to the pursuit of materialistic ends, we forget how ridiculous it all is. I know I did.”
Thunder Fox, Sam Dawes

the East Coast. Their music, taking influences from artists as varied as D’Angelo and Winston Surfshirt, through to Lime Cordiale and Allen Stone, shines with its depth and dedication to the genres it resides in. And at the same time, shows listeners that Thunder Fox is a band who is always thinking ahead to the next new sound.

PRAISE FOR THUNDER FOX

“Been keeping an eye on this band ‘cos they’re relentless giggers and hit that sweet spot between Winston Surfshirt and Lime Cordiale. Here’s another promising track that’s part social diatribe, part fun funk explosion.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe (‘Smokin’ On Loosies’, 2020)

“…sultry sax-iness and funk-drenched…a groove-laden number that is set to get feet churning and hips swaying.”
Scenestr (‘Been Busy’, 2019)

“Their music is fun and bawdy, yet with a sexy sophistication that makes it incredibly appealing.”
Eclectic Music Lover

“…funk-drenched blast of horns, harmonies, humour and bucketloads of Thunder Fox swagger.”

COURTNEY BARNETT Shares video for ‘Before You Gotta Go’ Launches interactive mixer site New album Things Take Time, Take Time out November 12

by the partae September 18, 2021
written by the partae

Today, Courtney Barnett launches the video for ‘Before You Gotta Go‘, taken from the much anticipated forthcoming album Things Take Time, Take Time – out November 12 via Milk! Records / Remote Control Records.

Intimately detailed and gorgeously sketched, Things Take Time, Take Time pulls back the curtain to reveal an optimistic and beautifully serene side to Barnett. ‘Before You Gotta Go‘, is one of the luminous highlights, turning a frustrated kiss-off into the most gracious of love songs “If something were to happen my dear, I wouldn’t want the last words you hear to be unkind.” Meanwhile, Barnett and co-producer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Cate le Bon, Kurt Vile) perform an elegant illusion; starting with a simple warm drone, they add myriad layers of synth, guitars, drums and percussion in slow crescendo. There’s a lot going on, yet they create a sense of boundless space.

The beautifully offbeat video directed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, meanwhile, casts Barnett as an ethnographer of the most delightfully idiosyncratic kind, collecting field recordings of dogs and horses, mushrooms and insects, and, most surreally, what looks like enormous statues and plants with her own face on them pushing through the ground.

On the ‘Before You Gotta Go‘ video, director Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore shares: “Making this clip was an interestingly polarising experience for me. I love how brilliantly simple Courtney’s idea was, it brought real joy shooting part of it together, just me, her and my DOP with the other part being two long days directing over zoom across the Tasman Sea. I watch it now and feel that sense of peace, that potent calm you can only get immersed in the beauty of nature.”

In order to give fans and music-lovers more insight into the creative process behind Things Take Time, Take Time, Barnett today also launched an engrossing interactive website which allows the listener to isolate, mute and mix different instruments and vocal-parts of these recordings. The listener can (for example) listen to Barnett’s dry vocal harmonies as an acapella, or focus on the rhythms of drummer Stella Mozgawa, or Barnett’s beautiful and sensitive finger-picked electric guitar. At the moment the site hosts the mixes of previous single ‘Rae Street‘ and ‘Before You Gotta Go‘, but in time it will be populated by additional mixes from the album. Visit the site HERE.

“Sometimes I try to say everything in one song, or put my whole belief system into a vox pop, but you just can’t do that — it’s impossible,” Courtney says. Things Take Time, Take Time, then, represents a realisation that ideology is represented through the way you treat others, not what you say in a song — that some things are more felt than said. This is Courtney’s world – full of the strangeness, busyness and undeniable warmth of life –  and you will definitely want to spend some time in it.

KEDR LIVANSKIY Shares new single & video ‘Your Turn’ Forthcoming album Liminal Soul due October 1

by the partae September 18, 2021
written by the partae

Praise for Kedr Livanskiy

“…glides between ethereal electro-pop and underground breakbeats” – Pitchfork

“Shimmering and seductive techno” – Resident Advisor

Kedr Livanskiy’s upcoming album Liminal Soul plays like an opera. It’s expansive, timeless and finds the Russian producer/musician pushing the boundaries of electronic songwriting. Ahead of its October 1 release, via 2MR / Remote Control Records, she’s revealed her dynamic new single ‘Your Turn‘ which features Kedr’s frequent collaborator and friend, Flaty. For the video, director Masha Demianova, Kedr and stylist Olesya Skaryna teamed up to create their take on a mockumentary music video. Masha explains, “I wanted it to look like we were on a far and complicated journey to shoot something beautiful, but in the end, the ‘making of’ footage is the only thing that comes to fruition. I wanted to document the time we are living now, with Yana and Olesya, our friendship and people around us. And of course the spirit of our country.”

Livanskiy’s previous record Your Need cemented her on the forefront of Russia’s burgeoning electronic / experimental music scene and was met with acclaim from both fellow DJs and press alike, earning her features in publications like The Guardian, Pitchfork (Read her Rising Feature), V, Bandcamp, Gorilla Vs Bear and more, as well as live gigs worldwide from Moscow to New York City.

The infectious pop energy of Your Need is still present on Liminal Soul, but this time it’s more refined; a single element in an elaborate arsenal. Rather than rebelling against the upbeat nature of Your Need, she opted to expound upon it: Liminal Soul takes the technicolour dance floor conjured on Your Need and drops it into the middle of a lush forest, striking a perfect balance between the electronic energy of contemporary life and the organic ease of the natural world.

To move beyond required her to push her own internal boundaries, including the use of her voice. In the past, Livanskiy’s vocals were used sparingly, a gentler element in a larger production tapestry. On Liminal Soul, though, she’s brought them to the forefront. With this liberation came the freedom to experiment with the voice as an instrument as well.

On Liminal Soul she injects her infectious club beats with a dose of the natural, crafting a transcendent collection of deconstructed break pop. From the angelic choral opener ‘Celestial Ether‘ to the moodier outro ‘Storm Dancer‘, the listener enters a state of suspended reality where they are transported to dark cityscapes and verdant rural sprawls, futuristic societies and ancient ones, all in the same stroke. In the end, Livanskiy doesn’t propose a single path forward. The point, instead, is to make peace with the fluctuation itself.
