Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers Unleash Sophomore Album ‘ANIMALS’ Out July 1

by the partae July 1, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support for Nick Carver & the Mean St Butchers

“It has a gorgeous dirty country blues feel to it, with big earthy guitars and rough-edged vocals. It’s foot-stomping, it’s a riot, yet comforting and personal.” (AU Review)

“The Way That You Walk is a smooth and moody piece that is rolling with bright keys, rolling brushed drums and Nick Carvers swoony vocal delivery.” (AAA Backstage)

“Searing soulful sludgy blues! That slide is getting a thrashing and sounds amazing. Love the brooding swamp this one’s rising up from. Unbeatable stompable rhythm.” [About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Steph Hughes, Triple J)

“I’m glad I’m wearing boots while listening because I felt the intense need to stomp.”
[About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Stacy Gougoulis, Triple J)

“Blow me down and let rip Nick! This is the kind of grit I can sunk my teeth into.”
[About ‘Two Legged Dog’] (Kath Devaney, Triple J)

Stream ‘ANIMALS’

Combining rough-edged rock and soulful blues with wallopping Americana folk roots, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are unleashing the beast with their eagerly anticipated sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ – out July 1.

With outlandish singer-songwriter Nick Carver leading the charge, the Melbourne-based (Inverloch, VIC) rock/ roots outfit has been showcasing their class in the lead-up to this ultimate body of work, serving up singles ‘Two-Legged Dog’ and ‘The Way That You Walk’ earlier in the year.

Now, Nick Carver & the Mean Street Butchers are bringing it all together with an 8-track collection of artistically crafted tunes that reflect the band’s camaraderie, Nick’s home life and the long country drives where his inspiration is uninhibited, and his imagination is free to roam wild.

“The live vibe of four musicians smashing out live takes has always been at the heart of The Mean St Butchers,” Carver says.

“Lyrically, the album deals with the raising of my son, leaving my old city life, the beautiful ugliness of abandoned swamps, loss, love for music, love for my loved ones and a call to men to be decent fucking blokes.”

Opening with foot-stomping rock single ‘Two-Legged Dog’, there’s barely enough time to reach for the cowboy boots before heroic slide guitar solos and lightning strong riffs speak of the warmth of returning home.

Next, ‘Let Me Go’ emerges with a swinging rockabilly/ blues rhythm, washboard percussion and moody melodies, building up to an epic explosion of jamming instrumental prowess, representing a release of negativity and just letting it all go.

‘The Way That You Walk’ saunters in with dark keys, resonating drums and seductive bass, using ominous alt blues-folk with a psychedelic tinge to call out men who believe their words and actions have no consequence.

Then, ‘My Baby’s Eyes’ arrives as an ode to Nick’s son Teddy, using melancholic guitars and vulnerable vocals to convey the conflicting emotions of entering fatherhood, followed by ‘Slow Dance’, inspired by Nick’s love for The Stooges, delivering a raw, fuzz-fuelled blues-rock track that screams to be experienced live.

‘Pony’ saddles up on a steed of slow-burning blues, a pensive track about saying goodbye to a loved one, featuring intricate guitar techniques, before ‘Jimmy Wilson’ arrives as a serious bluesy ballad, acknowledging the unfairness of indigenous incarceration in our country.

Closing out the album is title track ‘Animals’, an epic six-minute alt-rock amalgamation of grunge and garage-rock elements, moving steadily with moody melodies before bursting apart with an instrumental epiphany in the form of an organ solo, uncovering the beauty one can find in a seemingly ugly and uncurated stretch of coastline.

The band’s previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Double J, Glide Mag, The AU Review, Countrytown, Beat, Scenestr, Amnplify, AAA Backstage and more, with the band also having performed at NYE on the Hill, Inverloch Sounds of Summer Festival and Folk Rhythm and Life Festival, as well as supporting artists like Ash Grunwald, Custard, The Fauves and The Tea Party.

Nick Carver & the Mean St Butcher’s sophomore album ‘ANIMALS’ is out on July 1 and they have a handful of shows upcoming. This includes a mini-festival in San Remo, AROCKALYPSE NOW, which they curated themselves to celebrate the launch of the album with friends Millar Jukes & the Muscle, Two Last Names and many more.

Black Veil Brides Australian Tour Kicks Off This Week!

by the partae June 30, 2022
written by the partae

Australia, BLACK VEIL BRIDES Australian tour kicks off this week! Tickets for their Australian headline tour are flying out the door. With Adelaide and Melbourne’s 18+ show sold out, the tickets for Melbourne’s all ages show are selling fast and final tickets remaining for Sydney and Brisbane.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES have championed the isolated, the dismissed, and the forgotten since the band’s early inception. That ethos and spirit persists in the fully realized incarnation of the band whose image is the object of devotion and obsession, and whose anthems are sung in unison by an international audience, a diverse legion who refuse to surrender.

In an era when rock music is regularly declared “dead,” BLACK VEIL BRIDES music videos have been viewed over a half a billion times. The band (and its members including vocalist, Andy Biersack, who was named as one of the 100 Greatest Living Rock Stars by Revolver) Instagram and Twitter accounts command close to 10 million followers between them.

BLACK VEIL BRIDES have an impressive stack of awards and accolades under their belt with multiple Kerrang! Awards, Revolver Golden Gods Awards and Alternative Press Music Awards. Vale, the group’s most recent full-length album, went to No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart.

The band’s tour history reads like a textbook of subcultural mile markers in the modern heavy music scene. An initial hardscrabble headlining outing in 2009 has been followed by multiple mainstage runs on the Vans Warped Tour; tours with Slash, Motley Crue, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine; the massive Resurrection Tour, co-headlined by new labelmates Asking Alexandria; multiple US festivals, including Rock on the Range and Aftershock; and several appearances at the UK’s acclaimed Download Festival.

With a rightful reverence for the pop cultural icons of the past, the young outfit has nevertheless fashioned their own collective future, with relentless fury. In the hearts and minds of their fans, Black Veil Brides represents an unwillingness to compromise and a resistance to critics (personal and professional), fueled by the same fire as the group’s own heroes, the iconoclasts whose creative output, once dismissed, is now canonized.

Tickets are on sale now from www.destroyalllines.com

JOHNNY HUNTER’s triumphant debut album ‘Want’

by the partae June 28, 2022

“a lush eruption of cinematic passion and heavy-hearted emotion” – Atwood Magazine

“blistering guitar riffs and howling vocals filled with raw, boundless energy” – Earmilk

“poised to cement their cult-classic status” – Life Without Andy

“They put the new in new wave on this striking debut” – NME Australia

“Johnny Hunter stand out from the pack” – Newcastle Herald

**** “Want is everything Johnny Hunter could have hoped to achieve” – The AU Review

“A mighty tune, expertly rendered and delivered with heart” – The Guardian

“so exciting and modern” – Vive Le Rock!

Kings of Sydney’s underground Johnny Hunter have today released their triumphant debut album Want via Cooking Vinyl Australia. Led by an emphatic music video for the title-track, Want comes ahead of the band embarking on a 9-date national album tour throughout July.

Buy the album HERE. Tickets are on sale HERE.

Rousing blood-pumper ‘Want‘ is a thunderous opening to the album, walloping with insurmountable force. From the outset, the title-track introduces Johnny Hunter as defiant and determined; frontman Nick Hutt shares “it’s a spearheaded promise to ourselves to be the best version we can be. With this song, our self-assured affirmation acts as a hardened fist to the whirlwind of challenges that life throws at us. ‘Want’ is Johnny Hunter incarnate.”

Despite the spirited nature of Johnny Hunter and their confident charisma, it’s the moments of furious honesty and deep catharsis where the strength of Want shines most brightly. Songs like ‘Cry Like A Man’ and ‘Clover’ hear Hutt bare his soul, with each soaring vocal adding another dimension to this six-piece who are destroying the boundaries of man-hood with their powerful vulnerability and proud embrace of self.

Hutt notes “As we were finishing the record, we had just gotten out of lockdown and were certain that we were staring down the barrel of another couple of months in isolation… so there’s an element of structured desperation across the ten tracks.” This raw humanity underscores the entire album; Johnny Hunter are self-aware enough to acknowledge that we are all human and need to embrace our whole selves on the journey to self-actualisation. ‘The Floor’ is an acceptance of our lowest points, while ‘Fracture’ finds the beauty in sadness. “No matter how different we may seem…unbeknownst to what it is we want… we have all been naive, we have all strived to find our version of life, we all fear change, fear sadness, all amidst our own collective fading eternity.” However they are equally fuelled by a grit and hunger that drives them to take on the world, its changes and its conflicts head on – expressed with absolute inviniciblity and naivety on ‘Endless Days’.

On bringing their cinematic soundscapes to life, Hutt adds “Being able to involve our producer Jack Moffitt (The Preatures) into the creative process ensured we could squeeze the best out of every song. Our relationship really drove the direction of the final production and helped to finesse the lyrics. We also teamed up with critically acclaimed producer Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) to mix the album, and working with him opened our production so much more than we ever imagined.”

Since emerging from the shadows of Sydney’s grim nightlife in 2019, Johnny Hunter have quickly risen to cult favourites, selling out rooms across Australia’s East Coast and winning audiences over supporting the likes of Jack White and The Saboteurs, City Calm Down and Polish Club to name a few. Their debut EP Early Trauma (2020) garnered critical praise and airplay around the country, citing influences and drawing comparisons to The Smiths, Joy Division and The Cure. Though their sound is rooted in nostalgia, their impassioned songwriting and explosive live shows are undeniably made for now.

THE REGGAE MASTERS UB40 FEATURING ALI CAMPBELL ARE BACK For Their First Australian Tour in Four Years

by the partae June 21, 2022
written by the partae

Ali Campbell, the original founder of the iconic Grammy-award winning, UK reggae group, UB40, has confirmed the band will return to Australia for their first national tour in four years presented by The Hour Group and Vandemonian Touring.

The band’s legendary songwriter and esteemed vocalist will be joined by his amazing nine-piece band for the Australian tour. Tickets are on sale from 9am Wednesday 22 June 2022 at www.thehourgroup.com.au

Formed in 1979, UB40 helped define reggae music for a generation. The ground-breaking reggae troupe topped the UK singles chart on three occasions, earned multiple Grammy nominations and sold over 70 million records as they took their smooth yet rootsy musical blend to all corners of the globe.

Kicking off on 28 September, Ali Campbell will bring his energetic stage show that he is synonymous for to Hobart, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Bribie Island in Queensland. They will also headline the sold-out music festival, Promiseland on 2nd October in the Gold Coast.

The reggae pioneers will perform classic hits that catapulted them to the forefront of the universal landscape including “Red, Red Wine,” “Kingston Town,” “One in Ten,” “Food For Thought” and more.

The band has delivered outstanding performances during their recent run of shows throughout the UK and Europe.

“The vocalists were pitch-perfect, the musicians were flawless, they held the crowd throughout the entire performance and the atmosphere was phenomenal.”

“Campbell gave an excellent performance and was in fine voice.”

In addition to a jam-packed show of the classic hits, Ali will treat fans to new material from the band’s forthcoming album, Unprecedented which will be released on 24 June and is the follow-up to 2018’s A Real Labour Of Love – which debuted at No.2, the highest charting album by any incarnation of UB40 since 1993’s Promises And Lies.

Unprecedented is fueled by the roots rocking spirit that powered UB40’s original embodiment of work and is an album to inject a little reggae sunshine into even the darkest days. It’s also a fitting memorial to Astro who sadly passed away in November 2021 following a short illness.

Ali comments, “This album is now more poignant and special than either of us could have imagined when we were recording it. Astro heartbreakingly passed just two weeks after we’d finished the final mixes, so this is a way of keeping his memory alive.”

“I can’t wait to get back on stage and see all our wonderful Aussie fans, it’s been incredibly difficult performing without Astro by my side.  Remembering Astro, let the music play on!”

Iconic festival One Electric Day returns in 2022 with five massive shows across Australia

by the partae June 20, 2022
written by the partae

Suzi Quatro, Noiseworks, The Angels, Baby Animals, The Screaming Jets & Chocolate Starfish

TICKETS ON SALE 10AM THURSDAY 23RD JUNE THROUGH TICKETMASTER

Over the past decade, One Electric Day has solidified its reputation as one of Victoria’s favourite one-day music festivals. Every year the show at Werribee Park sells out in a matter of minutes. This year, organisers are not only excited to be able to take the popular event interstate again for a run of shows, but have also announced an international headliner for the first time in the festival’s history. Headlined by the Queen of rock n roll herself, Suzi Quatro, with a massive line-up that includes Noiseworks, The Angels, Baby Animals, The Screaming Jets and Chocolate Starfish, the 2022 One Electric Day is the biggest yet. With shows in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland, tickets are guaranteed to sell fast.

Organiser Duane McDonald, who is also behind the ever-popular Red Hot Summer Tour, says the opportunity to share the excitement of One Electric Day with audiences outside Werribee again this year is an exciting one.

“One Electric Day has become such a special event,” he says. “We see fans returning year after year and it has become an important part of people’s social calendar. We are always asked when One Electric Day will travel, so it is exciting that we have the opportunity to do that this year and even more so that Suzi Quatro will be joining us for the ride.” – Duane McDonald

Suzi Quatro is the undisputable Queen of rock and roll. Following on from her April sold-out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where she received nothing short of outstanding reviews. She is running hotter than ever and is heading to Australia to headline One Electric Day. Her show promises to be pedal to the floor jam-packed with hits, powerhouse vocals and unbridled energy. After selling over 55-million records (and counting), Suzi is pure rock royalty and every show is an unforgettable experience.

The return of Noiseworks is an exciting one for music fans. In the 1980s, they provided the soundtrack to every big night, with rock anthems No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chilli Woman, Touch and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest, Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album along with all their legendary hits, Noiseworks will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

When it comes to great Aussie rock, it doesn’t come much better than The Angels. It’s been almost five decades since brothers Rick and John Brewster co-founded the iconic band and have penned some of Australia’s most anthemic tracks. The Angels are widely reputed for their killer live shows. With hits like Long Line, Marseille, Be With You, After the Rain, Shadow Boxer and Mr Damage to name a few. Baby Animals burst onto the Australian scene in the 1990s with a solid rock force and a sassy lead singer. Suze DeMarchi proved that girls rock just as hard as guys and the Baby Animals soon kicked some impressive rock butt with hits such as Rush You, Early Warning and One Word. The band scored themselves ARIA awards for best album and toured the globe.

Aussie rock doesn’t get much more powerful than The Screaming Jets. With a swag of hits such as Better, Helping Hand, Sad Song, October Grey and Come On under their belt, The Screaming Jets are renowned for their pumpin’ live performances. This year, they also celebrate the 30th anniversary of their iconic release All For One. Chocolate Starfish are the epitome of a concert party! Fronted by the enigmatic Adam Thompson, the band is known for their high energy live performances. With songs like Four Letter Word, Mountain and You’re So Vain, Chocolate Starfish powered onto the Australian music scene in the 1990s and quickly secured themselves a space as an influential force. They produced two Top 10 albums and six Top 50 singles.

Tickets for One Electric Day go on sale to the general public at 10am AEST Thursday 23rd June through Ticketmaster.

AIRBEAT ONE Festival 2022 releases full line up and announces 3-day ticket special for 99 Euros The best line-up in Germany at one of the most unbeatable festival prices in all of Europe

by the partae June 17, 2022
written by the partae

AIRBEAT ONE Festival drops an incredible music and entertainment bomb. While announcing the full incredible lineup for this year’s edition, festival organizers also announced that the price for the 3-day ticket will be reduced to an amazing 99.00 Euros. This incredible offer was only made possible because a pool of sponsors and partners refinanced the tickets to thank festival-goers, and support the festival. This makes AIRBEAT ONE 2022 one of the best value-for-money festivals throughout the whole of Europe while delivering a summer lineup that is certainly in the top three of any festival throughout the entire continent.

Over 300 artists across six stages in a lineup unmatched by anything else, this year’s festival is easily the largest electronic music festival in Northern Germany. The Main Stage lineup is packed with global superstars such as Kygo, Marshmello, DJ Snake, and Tiesto. Superstar DJs and producers Kygo and Marshmello will play their only German shows this year exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE. Another exclusive main stage act in the Neustadt-Glewe is the acclaimed trio ‘3 Are Legend’, consisting of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Steve Aoki, who are all due to perform one of their extremely rare b2b sets.

An incredible 37 of this year’s total 100 DJ Mag Top 100 DJs will be playing at AIRBEAT ONE. Known as the world’s most important DJ ranking poll, 19 of the 27 DJs playing on the Main Stage feature in the DJ Mag Top 100. The main stage lineup includes prominent DJ Mag Top 100 DJ stars such as Afrojack, Armin Van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, DJ Snake, Don Diablo, KSHMR, Kygo, Marshmello, NERVO, Oliver Heldens, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Timmy Trumpet, Vini Vici, W&W, Bassjackers, Danny Avila, Mariana Bo, and Will Sparks. No other festival in Germany can boast as high a standard of DJs this festival season.

With Boris Brechja, Charlotte de Witte, Claptone, Fisher, and Vintage Culture, the new Arena Stage also delivers many of DJ Mag’s Top 100 house and techno music superstars. And with Elrow announced as an AIRBEAT ONE exclusive stage host, there’s something exciting, and alluring for everyone at this year’s festival. The most colorful and unique party label hailing from Spain will feature exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE this year, promising to bring with them top headliners such as Kšlsch, Camelphat, and the iconic Paul Kalkbrenner.

The legendary Terminal Stage features other headline acts from DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll including Alan Walker, ALOK, Fedde Le Grande, Lost Frequencies, Morten, Nora En Pure, Quintino, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, and VIZE. In addition, there are German superstars such as Alle Farben, Topic, Gestšrt aber GeiL, Lari Luke and Robin Schulz, chart smashers such as Hugel and Ofenbach, and many many more.

Later on, the Terminal Stage also offers top international headliners from bass to the dubstep genre, genre superstars such as Tchami, Malaa, Zeds Dead, Moksi and Netsky. While American superstar Dillon Francis completes this year’s unforgettable Terminal Stage lineup. Francis will play his only festival show in Germany, exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE.

AIRBEAT ONE has secured another German exclusive for the 2022 festival season. The world’s leading hardstyle label Q-dance’s only German appearance this year will be at AIRBEAT ONE. With a lineup that boasts headline superstars such as Angerfist, Brennan Heart, and Miss K8, three acts that have also appeared in DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll. More superstars of the hardstyle genre will also be performing, including Coone, Headhunterz, Korsakoff, Paul Elstak, Radical Redemption, Ran-D, Warface, Wildstylez, Zatox, and plenty more. You can be sure they will shake the Gladiator Stage to its very foundations.

The unforgettable second stage of AIRBEAT ONE Festival expands from the spectrum of Goa and PsyTrance by adding iconic trance artists to this year’s lineup. Trance and all-round electronic dance legend Ferry Corsten, a consummate DJ Mag Top 100 leader will be playing, other trance icons such as Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Morten Granau, and Sander Van Doorn (Presents Purple Haze) are helping expand on the already incredible lineup of PsyTrance DJs that include Ace Ventura, Alpha9, Aly & Fila, Andrew Rayel, Animato, Astrix, Avalon, Ben Nicky, Berg, Blastoys, Bliss, Bubble. Captain Hook, Claudinho Brasil, Fabio Fusco, and Ghost Rider.

„After two years of the Corona enforced cancellation of AIRBEAT ONE, we were insanely looking forward to being able to celebrate a carefree festival without the fear of restrictions. Unfortunately, with the war in Ukraine, inflation, rising prices, and additional expenses, circumstances have arisen this year that make it difficult for many to celebrate carefree. Therefore, we have talked to our sponsors, who have agreed to financially lower the tickets for the benefit of festival-goers and the festival itself. Therefore we are now able to lower the price of the 3-day festival tickets to a sensational 99.00 Euros, so that as many people as possible will be able to afford the small festival vacation in Neustadt-Glewe (and can party and experience incredible music for a few days, much like we did before the days of Corona and before the war)“ explains AIRBEAT ONE event manager Sebastian Eggert.

This price drop makes AIRBEAT ONE Festival 2022 one of, if not ‘the’ most affordable three-day festival in Germany and across Europe. AIRBEAT ONE boasts a lineup that can only be matched by electronic music festivals such as Creamfields or Tomorrowland. And festival ticket value vs quality of performer will never be matched again. This ultimate state-of-the-art production of one of the ultimate super-festivals in Europe should not be missed by any music fan this summer.

3-day tickets for AIRBEAT ONE Festival, which takes place from July 6th to 10th at the Neustadt-Glewe airfield in Mecklenburg – Vorpommern, are available from 99.00 Euros at tickets.airbeat-one.de.

The Good Things Festival 2022 Huge Line-Up Is Here!

by the partae June 15, 2022
written by the partae

Australia’s largest and favourite travelling music festival, aka Good Things Festival, is officially returning to ignite mosh pits and more along the east coast in December – and we can’t wait to celebrate with you!

With so few things to celebrate over the past few years and a severe lack of live music and festivals, it’s about time we all had something to look forward to; and Good Things Festival is bringing the good times and then some, offering a world-class line up entirely worth the wait.

To kickstart the celebrations lying in wait this December, Good Things Festival 2022 has confirmed none other than one of the world’s most electrifying and successful rock bands BRING ME THE HORIZON to headline proceedings. With BRIT and Grammy nominations, multi-platinum selling releases and over 1 billion YouTube views in their wake since forming in the early 2000s, BRING ME THE HORIZON continue to push expectations and sonic boundaries, and their live performances are nothing short of show-stopping to say the least.

They said it would never ever happen, but an Australian miracle will also take place at Good Things Festival – for their first live performances in 19 years, iconic and gold-selling larrikins TISM will be exclusively appearing onstage.

Forget the tone-deaf empty platitudes, Good Things Festival has also brought American heavyweights DEFTONES to ramp up festivities. Hailing from Sacramento, California, DEFTONES are undeniably one of the most innovative and enduring alternative metal acts of all time, and they’ll be in extremely good company alongside rough-and-tumble punk favourites NOFX this December as well. Pioneers of SoCal punk and nearly four decades into their careers, NOFX will perform their 1994 iconic album ‘Punk In Drublic’ in full and all your favourites at every Good Things Festival 2022 appearance, with all the hooks and refined raucous energy primed to explode on Aussie stages.

Speaking of Aussie stages, a band no stranger to playing at home and abroad is none other than The Amity Affliction, with the Queensland metallers set to bring their melodic and majestic brand of metalcore to the masses. Wielding their latest release, 2021’s EP ‘Somewhere Beyond the Blue’, as well as a horde of old favourites, this is one astounding affliction you’ll be ecstatic to experience live in action.

The party will be in full swing when Japanese rockers ONE OK ROCK take the stage, with the quartet’s dynamic blend of pop rock, post-hardcore and alternative rock set to simultaneously ignite some good vibes and dynamic singalongs. And fresh from releasing their chart-topping 2021 album ‘Fortitude’, French progressive metal behemoths GOJIRA are ready to unleash all the earth-shattering polyrhythms, blast beats and thought-provoking thematics fans have come to know and love on Australian soil.

The metal vibes keep coming with some delicious goth heaviness via Italian quintet LACUNA COIL, while noise firebrands and habitual party starters FEVER 333 will be lending their voice to the celebrations, as will the crushingly brutal Ukrainian hell-raisers JINJER. German metalcore shapeshifters ELECTRIC CALLBOY will be making their first ever trip down under for the occasion, with superstar start-up JXDN also set to chalk up his first-ever Australian performances.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper party without the inclusion of some other punk favourites, with appearances locked in from Swedish troublemakers MILLENCOLIN and Californian pop punk lords THE STORY SO FAR, as well as some triumphant sets from Norwegian punk rockers BLOOD COMMAND and Florida alternative giants SLEEPING WITH SIRENS to ensure a blistering blowout of epic proportions.

The festivities continue, with American electronic music duo 3OH!3 and urban punk duo NOVA TWINS guaranteed to get you all fired up. And heavy metal icons SABATON will arrive armed with their band new album ‘The War To End All Wars’, choosing Australia as one of the first to hear the new tunes live, while SOULFLY will also fly the heavy metal flag, returning to their adoring down under fans after one of their longest periods away from Australia in their 30 year career.

But it’s not just the internationals we’ll be celebrating with this December, with an army of Aussie beloveds also ready to roll. Australian punk rock institution COSMIC PSYCHOS, a band who can claim Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder as a mate and musical peer, will be storming the Good Things Festival stages. Fellow Aussie staples also set to appear include rock and electropop trio REGURGITATOR and emphatic ARIA-nominated rockers KISSCHASY, as well as formidable artisan punk storytellers CHASING GHOSTS.

And that’s still not all! Join some of Australia’s favourite alternative exports at Good Things Festival this year, from some melodically charged mayhem courtesy of Sydney metalcore outfit POLARIS, to some lush modern heavy charm via Melbourne’s THORNHILL – and some fiery, razor-sharp moments from everybody’s favourite screaming rap-rock-electro-pop mutants REDHOOK for good measure!

Tomboi Records Officially Launches Representing Women, LGBTQIA+ and POC In Music

by the partae June 14, 2022
written by the partae

This Pride Month the Australian music industry is getting a very welcomed addition with the official launch of Tomboi Records, a record label that fills a huge gap for a community that has been underrepresented for far too long – the emerging and established Women, LGBTQIA+ and POC in music.

Launching with six artists on the roster, this Naarm/ Melbourne-based independent record label is one of the first of its kind in the world, making it their mission to be a safe label for all peoples signed and working with them – specifically for Women, LGBTQIA+ and POC.

Tomboi Records founder and CEO, Alexis Benedict, is seasoned in the music industry with 25 years of experience in self-management, production, performance, writing and recording. Identifying as a non-binary person who has experienced first-hand and watched fellow artists in the industry receive a lack of support and endure discrimination due to their gender, colour, disability and sexual orientation, Benedict felt it was time to take a stand and represent. Having always been drawn to positive change and fighting injustice, Benedict can continue to be part of a new movement and bring change to the industry with Tomboi Records now filling that gap. Benedict states:

“We are here to start a new safe space in the music industry and shake it up a little! We are the first record label in the world created to be specifically a safe label for Women, LGBTQIAplus and POC in music and beyond and we are so excited to bring incredible artists to light and let them shine the best way we know how. Our hope is that other teams can adopt this approach that we do and see that there is a gap in the industry and it is a must for real change and to genuinely create inclusive elements to the music industry”

Alongside Benedict on the Tomboi team comes a ton of experience through Tim Youngson (A&R/ Label Development/ International Relations) and Lee Groves (Executive Producer). Youngson is best known for his music management, with his most notable signing being worldwide sensation Lorde, alongside Parson James, Glades and many more. Groves is a multi-award winning producer, composer, mixer and audio artist, working on projects with artists and bands including Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Gwen Stefani, Craig David, Dave Matthews, Black Eyed Peas, Bertie Blackman, Jessica Mauboy and more.

Joining forces with Ingrooves Music Group, Tomboi Records are thrilled to have penned a global distribution deal with another collaborative and supportive team with aligned values that will help push their roster to the front and centre.

Making up this one of a kind roster is some immense talent. This includes the likes of queer black electro-pop/ alt artist Lion; emotive alt-pop act Joan & The Giants, fronted by Grace Newton-Wordsworth and Aaron Birch (First Nations person); female/ LGBT duo Forces & Fury, with their dreamy electronica; Greg Gould (LGBT), whose album ‘1998’ landed at number one on the Australian Charts amongst a huge list of other successes; visual artists and art/pop electronic female artist Parker, who has won best music video at New York Film Awards, Los Angeles Film Awards and more; and lastly, Tomboi’s own pop-alt artist, Benedict, who has seen support from Rollingstone, Tonedeaf, Earmile, Music Feeds and more.

All six artists will be performing at Tomboi Records Showcases in Melbourne on June 30 at The Toff In Town and in Sydney on July 14 at The Great Club.

Tomboi Records and their stellar roster will no doubt be shaking up the industry and setting a new marker in how these artists are represented. This launch is a milestone that the entire industry needs to celebrate.

KING STINGRAY ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM + RELEASE NEW SINGLE & VIDEO

by the partae June 14, 2022
written by the partae

After much anticipation, Arnhem-land’s King Stingray today announce the release of their self-titled debut LP on August 5, via Cooking Vinyl Australia. To help us see out the wait, the five-piece have let one more belting Aussie anthem out of the bag.

New single ‘Let’s Go’ could very well be a road trip classic for the ages. Documenting the whimsy of hitting the road with “Central Arnhem highway on my mind“,  the track is instantly endearing and evocative. Through ‘Let’s Go’s limber, lazy chorus you can damn near feel the shudder of corrugated outback highways.

“Almost like the backbone of good times, the Central Arnhem Highway was the big road to fun times for us growing up, and still is to this day” guitarist Roy Kellaway explains.  “Whether it’s packing up the troopy with dusty, half broken band equipment and driving 12 hrs to Darwin for a gig, or just going bush to enjoy the great outdoors with our loved ones and friends.”

The accompanying video will have you ready to drop everything and get in the car, as King Sting offer shotgun for the drive…

Hailing from the Northern Territory and Queensland, this tight-knit crew of Yolŋu (Aboriginal people of northeast Arnhem Land) and balanda (non-Indigenous) musicians have produced a set of 10 tracks to rival any Australian band’s debut.

Think Warumpi Band’s Big Name, No Blankets. Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker. The Chats’ High Risk Behaviour. Then add an ancient tradition of manikay (song/songlines) that dates back tens of thousands of years, and a profound love of country and Mother Earth, and there sits King Stingray. Raw, wild and free.

King Stingray’s do-it-yourself ethos and connection to home and family resonates through every song on their debut album, from the funk-laden joy of Milkumana, to the soaring Milk Mirri Wayin, the sweet melancholy of triple j favourite Get Me Out, the boppy fun of Camp Dog, the punk rock thrash of Raypirri and the acoustic beauty of album closer Life Goes On.

Recorded and produced between the NT, Brisbane and the Byron Bay hinterland, King Stingray rocks vibrant and colourful like a great glowing djäpana (sunset) through the East Arnhem Land sky. The album is a vital entry to Australian music and cements the band’s status as one of the most exciting acts to burst out of the NT in years.

King Stingray’s self titled debut album is available to pre-order now.

Let’s go!

About King Stingray:

King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together. Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember.

Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.

Propelled by the instant success of their debut track “Hey Wanhaka” in October 2020, accidental lockdown anthem “Get Me Out”, groove-laden dance jam “Milkumana” and latest hit “Camp Dog“, the band have soared to unexpected heights.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), the band have taken out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year’ J Award for 2021, as well as NME Australia’s ‘Best New Act From Australia’ Award and Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Artist’ 2022.
