by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

The festive concert returns this December with special guests Amyl and the Sniffers, The Beths (NZ) and Alex The Astronaut

  • Paul Kelly announces his annual Making Gravy concert, taking place Friday 9 December at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl
  • Kelly is a 17 x ARIA Award winner and has been nominated 61 times – the most nominated Australian artist in ARIA history
  • Tickets on sale Wednesday 5 October

Who’s gonna make the gravy with Paul Kelly this year? Back by popular demand and now in its fourth incarnation, Kelly’s annual Making Gravy concert returns to Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Friday 9 December. Kick off the festive season with a night celebrating songs from Kelly’s four decade-long, critically acclaimed career… including, of course, his 1996 classic ‘How To Make Gravy’, a song five minutes long, with no chorus, and set in jail.

For 2022’s musical feast Kelly will be joined on stage by three of Australia and New Zealand’s finest musical exports: Melbourne outfit Amyl and the Sniffers, Auckland four-piece The Beths, and Sydney singer/songwriter Alex The Astronaut.

Frontier Members can access the pre-sale from Monday 3 October (1pm local time), before tickets go on sale to the general public on Wednesday 5 October (1pm local time) via frontiertouring.com/makinggravy. Secure your tickets early to avoid missing out!

One of Australia’s most revered musicians, Paul Kelly holds the prestigious title of an Officer of the Order of Australia for his distinguished service to the arts. Inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 1997, Kelly is a 17 x ARIA Award winner and has been nominated 61 times during his illustrious career, making him the most nominated Australian artist in ARIA history. Renowned as one of our greatest performers and songwriters, Kelly’s willingness to take the road less travelled has played an important part in keeping the flame burning in his own songs, tracks that have soundtracked a nation: ‘From St Kilda to King’s Cross’, ‘Leaps and Bounds’, ‘To Her Door’, ‘Before Too Long’, ‘The Ballad of Queenie and Rover’, ‘They Thought I Was Asleep’, ‘Deeper Water’, the unforgettable Kev Carmody co-write ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’… and countless more.

With the 21st of December now unofficially known as ‘Gravy Day’, ever since Kelly first debuted his first Making Gravy concert series way back in 2017 fans have been witness to a truly special night. Alongside his many hits and special guests, Kelly also performs a few of his favourite Christmas odes… several of which he captured in 2021’s extraordinary 22-song double collection Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train. From folk, classical, soul, carols, hymns, rock and roll, don’t miss this special, one-off live event!

Making Gravy 2021 – Photo by Mushroom Creative House

Twelve months ago, their album Comfort To Me propelled them into the stratosphere and now Melbourne punkers Amyl and the Sniffers return to the Bowl for Making Gravy! The band sold out venues across the globe in 2022, from legendary stages such as the Brixton Academy (UK) to festivals Coachella, Primavera, and more. In early September, Amyl… dropped Live at Forum Theatre on YouTube – watch the blistering clip here. Currently on the road in North America, the ‘Hertz’ rockers return to Europe this month before wrapping up a huge year of gigs with a show in Glasgow. Melbourne: it’s time to welcome Amyl and the Sniffers home.

Auckland four-piece The Beths are riding high on the recent release of their third and best album to date, Expert In A Dying Field, which debuted at #1 in New Zealand this week. Elizabeth Stokes (vocals/guitar), Jonathan Pearce (guitar), Benjamin Sinclair (bass), and Tristan Deck (drums) imbue singles such as the ear worm ‘Knees Deep’ with brimming, electric confidence – think cerebral indie-rock-meets-power pop. Praised by international outlets such as NME, Paste, Stereogum (who named Expert… Album of the Week) and more, The Beths “fully deserve every accolade they will no doubt receive with this album”, reckons Bandcamp, in their glowing 9/10 album review.

Sydney 26-year-old Alex The Astronaut will open proceedings on the night, charming audiences with her trademark lyrics, idiosyncratic humour, and radiantly detailed slices of life. 2022 album How to Grow A Sunflower Underwater debuted at #4 on ARIA’s Australian Album chart, Alex documenting moments of both the seemingly mundane – from a haircut, a therapy session, a trip to the beach and to the supermarket – to the utterly life-changing. In between performing sold-out headline shows across Australia in 2022 Alex has graced festival stages including Primavera Sound, The Great Escape, and Splendour in the Grass… where she performed her latest single, ‘Ride My Bike’.

Making Gravy has become an unmissable live music experience on Melbourne’s calendar. Christmas has come early with this unbeatable line-up: grab your tickets and don’t miss out!

NOFX TOURING AUSTRALIA THIS DECEMBER
AS PART OF GOOD THINGS FESTIVAL

NOFX dropped Single Album last February, and now the second half of the double album, appropriately titled Double Album, will be released on December 2nd. It boasts ten songs and is available for pre-order now. Plus, because we’re not monsters, you can hear the first single, “Darby Crashing Your Party,” on any digital service provider.

LISTEN TO “DARBY CRASHING YOUR PARTY”

PRE-ORDER DOUBLE ALBUM

What better way to celebrate an album release than a tour. NOFX will be in Australia as part of Good Things Festival kicking off on December 2 this year (album release day). Full details below.

At this point in your career, why do a double album?

“I wish I knew,” the fat one offers, almost confounded why anyone would ever ask him that question in the first place. “OK. I mean, we have a lot of records. I’m not sure how many, let’s call it 15 with 10 more EPs and 65 7″s. I wanted to do a double album cuz there are no good ones out there. Pink Floyd’s The Wall is about it. Quadrophenia is OK, I guess, if you’re a Who fan. Definitely not [The Beatles’] White Album. I don’t think anybody else has made good double albums. Certainly not Husker Du, Minutemen, or Smashing Pumpkins.

“I really like Single Album a lot, but the songs on Double Album aren’t quite up to scratch. All these songs were recorded at the same time, except this one was finished two years later. I think it’s a very enjoyable album, and maybe our funniest. I think it is what a lot of our fans will want to hear and it’s a great side three and four for a double album. I accomplished my goal of making a solid double-album, but it just took a lot longer than I expected.”

Reuniting with punk-rock legends Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore for producer/engineering duties, it’s not hyperbolic to say NOFX are making their best music now. But that’s not to imply everything else they’ve done was crap, either. But Double Album reminds both ardent fans and casual listeners that NOFX weren’t born to follow trends. Indeed NOFX—Fat Mike, guitarists Eric Melvin and El Hefe, and drummer “Smelly” Eric Sandin—have carved their logo into the veneer of punk-rock culture for decades. With nearly 40 years in this circus, you’ll meet people and do/see/conspire to get all the wildest shit done. Remember how one of the stipulations of the NOFX book Hepatitis Bathtub was that none of the band members could see what the other ones were writing about them? Well, this time, Mike got permission to blow up the foibles and peccadillos of people in song for maximum velocity and hilarity.

There’s “Joanna Constant Teen,” a 78-second tribute to the dominatrix that spent six weeks in Mike’s NYC-based Airbnb during the production run of his musical, Home Street Home. (“She just moved in and played with me every night. She’d be like, ‘Mike; it’s time to write another song. Get started, or you know what will happen!’ That was really cool. Obviously, I didn’t write that much.”) “Alcopollack” is about booking agent David Pollock, who has worked with the band for over 30 years and has lost more than his fair share of clients for his too-brazen honesty. (“I asked him if it was OK if we put this on the album, and he’s like, ‘Yeah sure, it’s mean but funny.'”) “Fuck Day Six” is a story detailing the time Mike cleaned out (pun sorta intended) in a rehab run by Buddhists, with plenty of name (and deuce) dropping. (“Anybody who has gotten off of opiates knows what ‘day six’ means.”) “Is It Too Soon If Time Is Relative” is a hilarious ‘n’ cruel takedown of the acclaimed author/physicist Stephen Hawking. (“I wrote that before he died,” is Mike’s mea culpa. “It’s not quite as funny anymore. I wanted him to hear it.”)

Naturally, Mike has made a career drilling and riveting the word “self” into “self-deprecation,” and he’s sure as hell not going to stop now. With such future classics as “Darby Crashing Your Party?,” “Punk Rock Cliche,” the song that got dropped off the Blink album California after the band found out that Skiba co-wrote it with Fatty (Although it was their favourite song). Mike also admits that the Blink version of the song was better), and the too-real, too-bittersweet, too-funny tracks “My Favorite Enemy” and “Don’t Count On Me,” he’s still ready to take a cream pie to the face, even if it has broken glass and sharpened nails in it.

“You have to laugh at everything,” Mike reveals, “because the world is just falling apart and you have to have a good attitude not to take things seriously. So this is how I’ve always done it. I make people laugh every day. I usually do it in a self-deprecating way, it’s just how I go through life: I have as much fun as I can. That’s what life is—trying to find all the happiness you can. And spreading happiness. Which is what I feel like is supposed to be my job in life—spreading joy.” The determination to continue making compelling music, keeping the bar high for punk, and doing the best thing for their punk-rock legacy, makes NOFX simply unstoppable. Double Album is filled with moods, tales, and tempos slightly faster than an ice-road trucker backsliding down a hill. What’s their secret? Quite simply, NOFX isn’t half-assing anything.

Mike laughs. “I full-ass everything. Literally.”

Fall Head Over Heels In Love With Indie-Folk Duo McDermott & North’s Nostalgic New Single ‘Elope’

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support for McDermott & North

“this is such feel good 60s tinged pop that backs up the positive spin on bad stuff happening message with a sunny sounding song.”
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“After jamming out to ‘All Things Come and Go’ for months, I thought I’d better explore the McD & N back catalogue, and I’m not disappointed! This is gorgeous, and just affirms my love for McDermott & North! These guys are all class.”
(Lachie Pringle, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“Definitely hearing the Kinks influence here. I can’t give higher praise than that. Really lovely classic songwriting: a little bit sunny, a little bit wistful, a joy to have in the ears.”
(Dan Condon, Triple J) [About ‘All Things Come And Go’]

“Patrick McDermott and Rhys North, have spent the past number of years carving out a sound that feels both grounded and explorative; it’s rooted in an earnest kind of folky warmth, but stretches into spaces of pure melodic ecstasy. Seriously, these guys really know how to write a chorus.”
(Happy Magazine)

“Clearly dedicated to the preservation of the song…”
(Gary Crowley, BBC Radio)

“A slice of gorgeous, blissful pop”
(Mark Rogers, RNZ)

Stream ‘Elope’

Beloved indie folk songwriters McDermott & North are back with their heartfelt sounds, this time with a sweet and sophisticated plea to marry a lover in their new single ‘Elope’. It’s guaranteed to charm from the moment it waltzes through the airwaves on September 28.

The talented songwriting duo have been winning hearts around the East Coast with their busking performances and beautiful songs since 2016, from which time their dedicated fanbase has amassed and only continues to grow. Their charismatic music making has likewise caught the attention of artists Ben Lee and Alex Lloyd, and consequently invited them to support on their separate tours. Stages at Bluesfest, TEDX Talks Brisbane and Bigsound have also showcased the pair in 2019, and they’ve two sold-out headline shows in their hometown – just to name a few.

The innocently earnest ‘Elope’ is sure to once again melt hearts, as Patrick McDermott and Rhys North do so well, with this release being their second for the year after the swaying 60s-inspired tune, ‘All Things Come And Go’.

This considered and carefully-crafted song is set to evoke nostalgic memories of that sweet, innocent feeling of being so hopelessly in love that you’re ready to abandon everything and tie the knot. Weaving through romantic invitations to escape into the sunset, declarations of love and heading down the aisle, ‘Elope’ charms all the way through with beautiful harmonies that glide effortlessly to a climactic final chorus, pirouettes through waves of strings before landing gracefully on an impressive baritone outro.

“Elope” was written during Patrick McDermott’s first real relationship. It’s about vulnerability and innocence of the heart when you’re caught in the throes of love.

McDermott continues,“‘How naive that total infatuation you feel for your first true love is, how you would blindly commit to leaving everyone and everything to be solely with that person. Though the relationship didn’t last, the song stands to represent the concept more than it does the person whom it was written for. It’s something many have experienced at some point and the melody serves to further romanticise those times and feelings.”

McDermott & North have made fans far and wide over the past few years, with media support here at home from Triple J, ABC Breakfast Radio, and globally with National NZ Radio and BBC Radio London / Scotland / Belfast, as well as receiving features from Scenestr, Beat Magazine, Forte Mag, The Music, The Creative Issue, Girl.com.au, MILKY, and many more.

Prepare to get down on one knee and fall in love with McDermott & North’s beautiful new tune ‘Elope’ when it’s unveiled on September 28. McDermott & North will be on tour with their band throughout September and October which includes three acoustic shows supporting Alex Lloyd.

Sudden Debt Release ‘No Data’, Melbourne Show This Thursday

by the partae September 28, 2022
written by the partae

Sudden Debt are a three piece from Melbourne, the band uses noise, tremolo, delay, drum pads, vocal effects and bass chorus to create a unique and experimental sound. Band members include members of Heart Beach (Spunk!, Kingfisher Bluez, Rough Skies) and Ivy St (Wireless).

No Data is the third track of a series of three singles following the recently released DD and IIHLL.

A celebratory show will be held on the 29th of September at Nighthawks (Melbourne) w/ Techno Biddes & Orbits

Quote about ‘No Data’ from Jon from Sudden Debt,

“No data was recorded at Heap Gap in 2022. It’s the third and final 2022 single from Sudden Debt. The three singles were tracked in half a day. Less than an hour for No data. No data is necessarily simple. The simpler the track the higher the likelihood it could be preserved. The vicissitudes of life were corroding our music at the time: work, lockdowns, travel, ageing, cost, procrastination. Calendrical bass, unintelligible vocals (you can’t understand and so are not distracted by the “words”), a stripped back electronic kit that you can plug in quickly and play really loud in a really small room”.

Date: 14th – 16th August, 2023
Location: Prestwold Hall Estate, Loughborough

Register: https://www.dcentralize.io

DCentralize Festival will put the power back in the hands of the music community by transitioning into a DAO, enabling token-holders to participate in decision-making of the festival.

By joining the DCentralize community, tokenholders will become part of a grand collaboration driven by shared values and transparent communications, which levels the playing field making access available to all.

Driven by blockchain technology, DCentralize is a hybrid music festival and conference that will be held at Prestwold Hall Estate in August 2023. The live event will be streamed simultaneously in a custom-built metaverse hosted by Passage.
DCentralize Festival is on a mission to empower artists and enact social change through decentralization as the first festival brand to be tokenized and fully-owned by its community.

Bridging the music and tech sectors, DCentralize aims to drive the evolution of the music industry using the latest Web3 technologies.

DCentralize and its partners will host a series of regular workshops – before and during the festival – to bootstrap artists and attendees with the knowledge of how to transition into Web3 with confidence. This is a clear demonstration of the team’s strong community focus and commitment to inform and empower people both within and outside the blockchain space.
DCentralize will ultimately transition into a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization),  which will enable its tokenholders to participate in the management and decision-making of the festival in a fair and transparent way. Tokenholders will get voting rights on key decisions such as lineups, stage design, core management, festival expansion and more.

By joining the DCentralize community, tokenholders will become part of a grand collaboration driven by shared values and transparent communications, which levels the playing field making access available to all.

As part of a global promotional tour to drive awareness to the project, the DCentralize team will be hosting a series of events for some of the world’s leading Web3 summits and conferences. Supporting Web3 artists and musicians by giving them a platform to showcase their skills in a live environment is a key aspect of the DCentralize team’s mission.

Founder Ian Kerr has many years of management, event organization and logistics behind him and now heads into a bold new chapter with DCentralize. Ian says:

“DCentralize is already flying the flag for our beliefs. We work as a core community of professionals from the worlds of Web3, cryptocurrency, event management, travel, music, art and more. Working in a decentralized model means that the community can overcome the constraints of tradition, being supported by a network of specialist advisors.”
Technical and Creative Director Joe Crossley is the founder of Astral Projekt, an award-winning creative studio working in Web3 and immersive media. Joe is at the forefront of cutting-edge technologies. He specializes in augmented reality and projection mapping.

Music Coordinator Sarah Main is an acclaimed Ibiza DJ, producer, NFT artist and event organizer whose entire life has been spent submerged in art, music, and mixed reality.

Andy Raisen, Head of Community Engagement says “DCentralize is utilizing the forces of Web3 to change how we all live our lives, helping to build a better world that’s open to all, and where you can have a real influence on the cultural movements that matter most to you.”

FB: @rakastella.official
TW: @rakastella_

Life and Death and Innervisions’s collaborative party Rakastella is back with another diverse and eclectic musical offering in the historic and picturesque Virginia Key Beach Park, Miami on Saturday December 3rd, 2022. This passion-filled gathering features three tastefully eclectic stages covering a wide spectrum of international electronic sound headlined by AceMoMA, Dixon, TSHA, DJ Boring, DJ Tennis b2b Seth Troxler, Sofia Kourtesis, Moodymann, Jennifer Cardini, Or:la, Trikk, Ashley Venom, Will Renuart, Coffintexts, Powder, Quest, Yu Su and a very special guest. Get your tickets now at https://rakastella.com/.

Four previous editions of Rakastella have established it on the world stage as a leader in eco-friendly musical experiences. It is a mindfully curated, 15+ hour party that unites a thoughtful lineup of artists with diverse backgrounds. This year, once again, that diversity as well as the need to make the whole festival a safe space that is welcoming to one and all is in sharp focus. This year, Rakastella will abandon VIP tickets so that all dancers are equal as one on the dance floor thus bringing back the original community-minded spirit of early dance music culture.

Stage hosts this year include the free-thinking and inclusive clubbing collective HE.SHE.THEY. It is a record label, fashion brand and event series for people of all races, genders and sexualities with a cutting-edge house and techno soundtrack. Also hosting will be Where Are My Keys?, a Miami born, boutique underground brand that hosts unique international events with world class sounds.

Have you ever experienced a Rakastella sunrise soundtracked by Innervisions? You won’t want to miss this unforgettable moment with Dixon this year. The whole party often feels like it is building towards this magical moment – as the grooves build and atmospheres evolve, the sun appears and a big wave of energy washes over the crowd to uniting them together.
One of the reasons Rakastella is so special is the location itself – Virginia Key Beach boasts scenic beaches and sweeping views of the bay which make for a unique backdrop. Next to the area’s raw natural beauty, environmental art will also be nestled amongst the tropical shaded groves that border the sea.

You can look forward to extended set times this year so that artists have the chance to really settle in and go deep into their sound. Headliners include AceMo and MoMA aka AceMoMA, whose futuristic blend of techno, footwork, and jungle has made them modern day heroes. *Campers entrance only

FULL ARTIST LINE-UP COMING TUESDAY 11 OCTOBER!

As the dust settles on an enormously successful sold out homecoming event on the weekend, CMC Rocks QLD is delighted to reveal dates for the March 2023 festival.

Between Wednesday 15 and Sunday 19 March 2023, CMC Rocks QLD, Australia’s premiere international country music festival will land in Willowbank, Ipswich helmed by some of the hottest global superstars; with the full artist line-up to be announced on Tuesday 11 October!

With just six months between last weekend’s hugely anticipated 15th Anniversary and the 2023 event – which sees the festival return to its regular March slot on the annual calendar – CMC Rocks QLD will once again deliver the ultimate country music line, certain to light up the country community’s spirit like nothing else!

Chairman of Chugg Entertainment, Michael Chugg said, “We waited a long time to put on this year’s show, and we knew it was going to be spectacular. Everyone involved, from the artists, staff, crew and especially our CMC Rocks fans, absolutely outdid themselves. And you better believe we’re going to do it all again in just six months’ time!”

Jeremy Dylan, Festival Director, Potts Entertainment said, “It’s been an incredible, emotional weekend for all of us – the fans, the artists and all who have been working behind the scenes to pull off this triumphant return. The loyalty of our fans is awe-inspiring and they came to party. We felt the love and we know Brad, Kane, Morgan and everyone who stepped onto that stage did as well. After three and a half years, it felt like we came back stronger than ever and now we’re barrelling into 2023, as we return to March for what is going to be the biggest CMC Rocks yet.”

Over the weekend just gone, the first CMC Rocks QLD since March 2019 went off with the kind of explosive energy country fans have bottled up and waited to unleash for the past 3 and a half years! Across three days, 22,000 patrons descended on Willowbank to take in live sets from international chart-toppers Brad Paisley, Kane Brown, Morgan Evans, Jimmie Allen, Blanco Brown and more, along with an absolute smorgasbord of the finest homegrown talent on offer!

Spirits were sky high as crowds entered the main festival area on Friday afternoon, with local heroes Casey Barnes and Troy Cassar-Daley returning to the CMC Rocks stage. First Nations talents Isaiah Firebrace and Mitch Tambo joined Lee Kernaghan during his set for a stunning rendition of their new single ‘Come Together’.

Friday also served up anticipated debuts from US stars MacKenzie Porter and Abby Anderson, who played in the afternoon, then joined Jimmie Allen on stage that evening during his explosive set. It was Kane Brown’s stellar performance that brought the first night to a close, including chart-topping hits ‘Like I Love Country Music’, ‘One Mississippi’ and more, along with ‘I’ve Got Some Famous Friends’, featuring some of his festival mates – Blanco Brown, Restless Road and MacKenzie Porter – live on stage. Brown left no doubt as to why he’s one of the hottest stars in country music right now.

Saturday’s all female Songwriter’s Show line-up captivated, MacKenzie Porter, Laci Kaye Booth, Lindsay Ell and Abby Anderson playing in the round, stripped-back and intimate, showcasing their incredible raw talent. As day turned to night, crowd favourite Troy Cassar-Daley continued the good vibes, lifting the crowd with his live show.

From debuting in a lunchtime slot at the first ever CMC Rocks in 2008, Nashville-via-Newcastle star Morgan Evans made his anticipated homecoming as a festival headliner at the 15th Anniversary event. On Saturday night, Evans had spirits soaring as he laid down a blistering set featuring hit singles ‘Day Drunk’ and ‘Diamonds’, fans singing along to every word.

Wingham’s own James Johnston is as country as they come, drawing large crowds on Sunday afternoon, with audiences jamming along with singles ‘Raised Like That’ and ‘Small Town’. US singer-songwriter Niko Moon continued to enthrall on his CMC Rocks debut, followed by crowd favourite Brad Cox, who had some serious country spirit on display and fans in the palm of his hand.

Accompanied by an extraordinary fireworks display to close out an epic three days, Brad Paisley’s Sunday night headline set blew the lid right off the Rebel Stage. Delivering a legendary performance punctuated by chart-topping hit after chart-topping hit, plus a duet with Lindsay Ell, Paisley had it all and then some, reminding us why exactly why CMC Rocks QLD is the ultimate country music experience.

Queensland Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said CMC Rocks was a significant feature on the It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar.

“The Queensland Government backs CMC Rocks because we know fans travel from far and wide for this first-class country music experience,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“It’s terrific to see to this international country music event return as wonderful addition to Queensland’s great lifestyle while also supporting local jobs.

“Major events bring visitors who are predicted to invest more than $14 million in the Ipswich visitor economy during next year’s 16th anniversary of CMC Rocks.

“Now is the time to start planning your CMC Rocks international country music experience for 2023.”

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said two festivals within six months would be a huge boost to the region and inject millions of dollars into Ipswich’s economy.

“CMC Rocks 2022 was incredible this weekend and we’re thrilled to be welcoming the event back to Ipswich in 2023 to its regular timeslot in March,” Mayor Harding said.

“This world class festival is a highlight on the event calendar for people from all over Australia and around the world and having it twice within six months is a win-win for everyone.”

CMC Rocks QLD firmly cemented their place as Australia’s most significant country music event in 2022, with a festival experience like nothing else around! Billie Eilish – Melbourne – September 21, 2022

by the partae September 23, 2022
written by the partae

Beautiful words: Darren Chan

American singer/songwriter Billie Eilish returns to Melbourne after more than three years. Her exponential rise in popularity saw her performing the first of 4 nights on the Melbourne leg of her Australian tour.

Diehard fans screamed at deafening levels when Billie appeared amidst a wash of

red lighting opening with “Bury a Friend”.

She screams “Melbourne are you ready?!!” was just reiteration of the 15,000 strong crowd more than willing to partake in the audio visual extravaganza the next two hours would bring.

A minimalist stage set up with a walkway and giant ramp helped create a visual canvas for each song. From the backdrop of flames and red lighting of “Therefore I Am”, the oceanic themed “Ilomilo”, to the environment themed  “All the Good Girls go to Hell”, every song had a visual wow factor.

A moment was taken for musical partner Finneas to join Billie at the front of the stage for the acoustic song “TV”. Billie dons a guitar  and sings “I Love You / Your Power” in her airy vocal style ending with dual harmonic guitar lines with her brother.

The LED backdrop distracts the crowd for a minute before Billie appears floating on an elevated platform at the back of the arena. In a sea of phone torches, she stretches out her hand symbolising her connection with the crowd.

She’s conscious of her rise to fame and takes several moments to acknowledge her appreciation for everyone. She seems to also take on a duty of care for those attending her show – taking a mindfulness moment with some deep breathing.

Billie only takes short moments to bring things down a notch before ramping up again. She had stage presence to captivate the crowd, and they were with her every step of the way.

Jumping around like a metal front person, she concluded the night with the energy expending “Bad Guy”, then serenaded everyone with “Happier Than Ever” as the entire arena rained down in confetti.

It was evident a lot of creative thought and well timed execution had been put into the show. The combination of lighting, staging, LED projected imaging, musical arrangements, and performance delivered a dream-like cinematic experience that fans and even those not attuned to Eilish’s music would never forget.

Pennywise – Forum Theatre, Melbourne 18 September 2022

by the partae September 21, 2022
written by the partae

Photography: Juan Castro

Forming back in 1988 and hailing from Hermosa Beach, Pennywise alongside fellow Californian punk rockers Circle Jerks and Civic gave Melbourne’s Forum Theatre exactly what they had been waiting for.

Circle Jerks hit the LA South Bay scene back in 1979, playing a huge role in the innovation and development of Hardcore Punk. It was a true pleasure to see Pennywise and the Circle Jerks on the same bill.

Forming in 2018, Melbourne’s very own Civic opened the show with a huge mix of tasteful glam/classic rock hits.

JUNO Award-Winning Indie-Folk Band The East Pointers Announce New EP House of Dreams To Arrive On September 30th New Single “Save Your Lonely” Out Now

by the partae September 17, 2022
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – JUNO Award-winning Canadian pop-folk band The East Pointers, are excited to announce the release of their highly anticipated new EP House of Dreams, set to arrive on September 30th via Nettwerk Music Group on all streaming platforms.

House of Dreams was born out of pandemic downtime and a desire to always be pushing forward. With the cancellation of touring in 2020, Koady Chaisson, Jake Charron and Tim Chaisson of The East Pointers started working on new music with the help of their friend and member of The Trews, Colin MacDonald. After narrowing down over twenty songs written to the best seven tracks, the EP was brought to life virtually with the help of producer Derek Hoffman (Arkells, The Trews, Silverstein).

In January 2022, the band suffered an unimaginable loss with the sudden passing of beloved member Koady Chaisson, and the new music was brought to an abrupt halt. Tim and Jake met in the weeks that followed and both knew, almost without saying it, that they had to carry on and bring the new music to fans.

“The “House Of Dreams” EP is a collection of 7 tracks that we wrote while sidelined during the pandemic. After eight years of solid touring, it was our first experience being grounded on Prince Edward Island as a unit. We recorded them with our producer, Derek Hoffman, before our bandmate and best friend, Koady, sadly passed away. Koady was probably the most excited about all of these tracks, so we’re channeling that enthusiasm as we release it to the world,” said Jake Charron and Tim Chaisson of The East Pointers.

Keeping Koady’s spirit alive, House of Dreams will push new boundaries with the same driving trad instrumental hooks the band has become known for in tracks such as “When I Had You,” “Happy As I’ve Never Been” and “Kayla, For Me,” a song about loss and the memories that you try to hang onto when dreams are suddenly taken away.

The EP’s first track, “The House of Dreams,” is special to the band as it is one of Koady’s compositions that came from their writing sessions, originally titled “Quarantine Sessions #2”.

“The location of Koady’s dream-come-true home is a little cottage with a spectacular view of the ocean on the Eastern Shores of Prince Edward Island. We spent many days here as a band, hanging out, writing music, and dreaming up plans for the future,” said Jake Charron of The East Pointers.

Also included on the EP, will be the recently released singles “I Saw Your Ghost”, “Stronger Than You Know,” and “Save Your Lonely,” an upbeat and decidedly folk-pop tune about the hardships endured by a touring musician and feeling the distance from someone back home.

Since forming in 2014, The East Pointers have remained furiously energetic, musically complex, and technically brilliant. They’re grounded in family, as the seventh generations of traditional PEI and Ontario-based Celtic players and writers, and have effortlessly parlayed into the folk-pop arena.

The band gained international recognition as musical trailblazers, and continued to rise to success after releasing their debut album, Secret Victory, in late 2015 and performing in Canada, the United States and Australia. The East Pointers have also received achievements including a JUNO Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year in 2017 for Secret Victory, a nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for What We Leave Behind at the 2019 JUNO Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year at the 12th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2016, and nominations for Instrumental Group of the Year and Canadian Folk Music Award as Ensemble of the Year again in 2018.

In addition to the new EP, The East Pointers are also getting ready to present the Harvest Home Festival, set to take place on September 23rd and 24th at the Rollo Bay Fiddle Grounds in Prince Edward Island. For more information on the festival, visit here.

The Chats – Forum Theatre Melbourne – September 16 2022

by the partae September 17, 2022
written by the partae

Words: Chris Brooks – Photography: Juan Castro

Beloved South East Queensland legends The Chats tore up Melbourne’s Forum theatre with trail blazing support from USA Mean Jeans & Melbourne locals The Prize.

The Chats smashed through 20 something, bone crunching, high voltage, punk rock classics. With barely a moment for breath, every song seemed to be pushing close to 2x speed or more compared to recorded versions, very reminiscent of early Ramones shows.

Filled with bogan mullets and sweaty flannelettes, The Forum crowd lapped up every sound screeching decibel that The Chats dished out.  If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and catch The Chats on their GET FUCKED world album tour!

PSTCRDS drop energetic new single “What We Dwell On”

by the partae September 16, 2022
written by the partae

Newcastle pop punk outfit PSTCRDS deliver a fresh anthemic sound on their latest single “What We Dwell On“.

The intoxicating new track explores the ideas and emotions surrounding a failing friendship.  As the tune twists and turns, it evokes a sense of dejection whilst simultaneously clinging to feelings that are no longer reciprocated, despite continued efforts.

“Eventually you can only try for so long to keep someone in your life who doesn’t want to be there,” says the band.

Produced, mixed and mastered by Chris Lalic (Windwaker, The Last Martyr), “What We Dwell On,” was welcomed into the world on Wednesday night via triple j Short.Fast.Loud. The tune is accompanied by a dynamic music video directed by Crow River Visuals (Paperweight, Terra).

Formed in early 2019, PSTCRDS is Stove Reid (vocals), Henry Holzberger (guitar), Tom Pockett (guitar/vocals), Brad Reid (bass/vocals) and Jack Stewart (drums). Together the band blend traditional pop punk sensibilities with a mix of emo and metalcore influences. The group dropped their debut EP, ‘This Place Or Our Pace,’ in May 2021 and was described by Wall of Sound as capturing, “The youthful essence of pop punk perfectly, whilst adding rebellious grit and staying current to today’s scene.”

The five-piece followed up with two-track release, ‘System Overload,’ in September 2021 to which triple j Unearthed’s Dave Ruby Howe expressed, “These big melodic punks have added a bit of gnarly skater bite to their sound here.”

To date, PSTCRDS have warmed up stages for artists to the likes of Windwaker, Rumours, Reside, Ocean Sleeper and more and set off on their first successful headline run mid-last year.

The band are currently flaunting their new tune live across the East Coast as part of their ‘Typical Emo Sh*t Tour’ in collaboration with Sydney metalcore group, Synge. The band have already listed Brisbane, Central Coast, and Canberra and still have sets in store for Adelaide, Melbourne, Singleton, Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle. Tickets on sale now.

“What We Dwell On” is available now, streaming everywhere!

Teddy Swims – The Forum, Melbourne, 13 September 2022

by the partae September 16, 2022
written by the partae

Photography + Words: Darren Chan

Nothing like spending a Tuesday night going to a live gig. To a warm reception, Sydney singer/songwriter Cap Carter opened the evening. An artist who wears his heart in his songs, he sang with such passion and intensity belting out tracks like ‘Relapse’ and ‘Guns’. This is one artist worth seeing.

The full house cheered Teddy Swim’s entrance to audio quotes mentioning his meteoric rise to popularity thanks to YouTube. Casually dressed in a hoodie and sans shoes, he effortlessly delivered a eclectic mix of music, such as the pop infused ‘All That Really Matters’, the dance track ‘Better’ to his famous cover of Shania Twain’s ‘You still the One’ backed by his stellar band. His huge vocal prowess and musical versatility won the crowd over.

Teddy was  incredibly humble and appreciative of his rapid rise to fame, numerous times expressing his gratitude to his fans. Somehow, I think this is just the beginning of much bigger things to come.

FREAKCLUB
DROP NEW SINGLE & VIDEO
“GOBSTOPPER“

Today, Melbourne alternative hip hop collective FREAKCLUB drop their new single Gobstopper. To celebrate, the group have also announced The Gobstopper Release Party, to take place in Melbourne this October, details below.

Of the new single FREAKCLUB states, “Gobstopper was one of those songs that we just had to make. We were fuelled by a lot of the hunger, angst and uncertainty that comes from trying to make it in music. It was those years of almost opportunities, broken promises and “We’ll keep an eye on what you’re doing”s that inspired us to make this song. There’s no hidden meaning or secret feeling, we really let this song speak for itself. From the grungy-punk inspired vocals to the screeching guitar solo, this song is very much just us being us, and hoping to inspire people to do the same.”

Gobstopper is the first piece of new music since’s the group’s debut EP Bambi Vol.I which received rave reviews from Pilerats who said “As a whole, Bambi. Named as ‘20 Artists to Watch 22′ by Pilerats, FREAKCLUB are writing songs showcasing their abilities well beyond the years the group has been together. Each new single the band releases represents a different side of FREAKCLUB while still maintaining their core sound, style and freedom of expression.
