The Mess Around Interview

by the partae July 26, 2023
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Perth.

What’s been happening recently?

TMA have just smashed out our latest release “want you back” with a party at indi bar.

Your latest single ‘Want You Back’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? I answered these 4 questions with below.

How did you go about writing ‘Want You Back?

Where did you record and who with?

How did you approach the recording process?

Working out of Perth’s Oracle Studios (Mongol, Arctos), the larrikins headed into the studio to record ‘Want You Back’ with their own drummer Alex Ford. In search of a unique space, The Mess Around headed to a farm owned by Alex Ford’s dad, to record drums in an environment that they could make their own. Keeping production in-house allowed them to flex their creativity even more, with Alex Ford also mixing the track, before it was sent off to be mastered by Simon Struthers (Sly Withers, Something For Kate, Karnivool).

We have all been in that relationship where one person is a tad more obsessed than the other. This song is for the people that realized the moment after a breakup, that slip ups were made, regret sets in and there’s the realization it was a mistake. “Want You Back” is a fun demonstration of showing your love for someone, beginning the romantic chase to portray how much they mean and ultimately get them back in your arms.” The Mess Around

We captured “Want You Back” on the family farm. The peacefulness of the countryside, the rogue sheep being fought off during the day, the fire pit at night with marshmallows and beers all somehow manifested their way into this light hearted yet deep song, as we sat around talking about our previous life experiences good and bad. A few of us were soaking in the scenery thinking “how’s the serenity” when Chris involuntarily came through and decided he would crash Alex’s dads’ farm motorbike. We all freaked but when it turned out he was okay, it become a thing and laughed about it for the rest of the day. In hindsight it was a butterfly effect moment, as without that happening and us retreating to go jam, Chris wouldn’t have written that cheeky little number on guitar, which eventually would eventuate into ‘Want You Back’. The Mess Around.

How would you describe your music?

Sometimes deep and meaningful like our song balance, while other times just party anthems like “Too many tinnies” we like to keep it mostly fun and energetic.

Any shows coming up?

Nexxxxt giggos!

What’s planned for the remainder of 2023?

  • TMA are going to record a full EP. We are in discussions with Tristan on executing this with Sumo Studios. Writing/deciding the final songs for this as we speak. EP Launch to follow.
  • Legend Sinead Ohara from Base Management has agreed to be the booking agent for an Australian tour (she has sent her quote and we just need to work out the timing etc)
  • “Too many tinnies” Perth to east coast aussie drinking anthem is to be released (attached) with single launch party to follow.

Introducing ANY GIRL with pulsing electronic-rock heater ‘INTO THE BLACK’

by the partae July 20, 2023
written by the partae

Acclaimed artist, songwriter & producer REIJA LEE launches a new project.

Having previously amassed 40 million+ streams, performances at Listen Out, BIGSOUND, Sets On The Beach & sharing lineups  with Crooked Colours, Kira Puru & Luke Million as Reija Lee, Any Girl is the emotive & fierce new project from the acclaimed Australian producer, singer & songwriter. With her modern electronic influences now blending seamlessly with childhood roots of guitar-driven rock, Any Girl is today sharing her debut single ‘Into The Black’. An exquisite amalgamation of her abilities & versatility as an artist, ‘Into The Black’ explores the fear of the unknown, unpacking a relationship where one would rather stay, than risk the uncomfortability of loneliness.

Working closely with producer & drummer Timothy Commandeur (The Presets, Set Mo, PNAU), Any Girl was able to take a small demo loop of Tim’s & work it into a chorus melody with lyrics, almost instantly. The ease at which the song came together led them both to the quick realization that ‘Into The Black’ would be a keeper. With sonics in the vein of MAY-A, Hatchie & Kita Alexander, the track, whilst a debut release, is a testament to Any Girl’s ability to push boundaries for the sake of personal authenticity.

“On the surface, Into The Black is a song about the dreaded ‘situationship’. But in a deeper sense, it’s about our fear of the unknown.  The lyrics portray someone who would rather be in an unfulfilling relationship, simply because it’s what they know, and it’s better than their fear of being alone. But the uplifting feeling of the chorus and the lyric ‘in the black’ being used as a metaphor for intimacy, kind of poses the question of whether giving in is always such a bad thing. Change is scary, but sometimes comfort is just what is required in the moment.” Any Girl

“Into The Black came together so easily. Working with Tim was an absolute dream. He had a small demo loop (which turned into the verse), then I came up with the lyrics and melody pretty instantly, and we just built it from there. I always know when a song comes together that easy, it’s gonna be a keeper.” Any Girl

In celebration of her liberating new song & sound, Any Girl will be performing her debut show at Perth’s El Grotto on Friday, July 14th, in partnership with Australian tastemakers Pilerats & legendary surfwear brand Rusty. Alongside giveaways & a custom light installation, Little Guilt will be joining to support, with DJ sets from Ekko & Sidetrack as well.

“I’m pretty excited to put on my first single launch and I never could’ve dreamed it would be supported by so many amazing artists and brands. Rusty and Pilerats are co-hosting the event, and we’ve even developed an AnyGirl x Rusty Merch collab up for grabs on the night. Beamhacker is building a custom light install, and Little Guilt are supporting which I couldn’t be happier about since I’m low-key obsessed with their latest single! And to finish off the night Ekko & Sidetrack are heating things up with an alternative DJ set, so yeah – I’m pretty psyched!” Any Girl

With a pedigree that is nearly unmatched in Australia under the Reija Lee name, Any Girl has previously clocked up well over 40 million+ streams across DSP’s, with her breakout hit ‘Sweet Talk’ #1 on US Dance iTunes, and enjoying revered sync with Victoria’s Secret. Signing to Diplo’s Mad Decent label saw Reija Lee feature on EDM tracks from the likes of Zeds Dead, ShockOne, Paces & Metrik, as well as being sampled by rap heavyweights such as T.I, OutKast’s Big Boi & Trinidad James. Domestically, she previously enjoyed support from triple j with full rotation spots across numerous singles, as well as anointed a prestigious triple j Unearthed Listen Out winner. Well versed as a live artist, her performances at Sets On The Beach, BIGSOUND, Listen Out & supports with Crooked Colours, Kira Puru & Luke Million only assisted in cementing her pedigree.

Any Girl is Reija Lee’s opportunity to transcend genres, picking up a bass guitar and returning to her childhood roots; raised on rock & guitar-driven rhythms. ‘Into The Black’ is the debut track, setting the precedent for what’s to come; with a full body of work recorded & ready to go. Any Girl is the synthesis of electronic, rock & pop influences across Lee’s lifespan, pairing the raw, emotional energy of her band, with her unarguably brilliant vocal power. Any Girl is coming out of the gates swinging & there’s no stopping her now.

PRAISE FOR ANY GIRL

“Love Nobody gets stronger on each listen, it’s like you’ve bottled the emotions of a John Hughes film on this track.”

Nick Findlay, triple j (Reija Lee)

“Something about this gives me a big virtual feeling. It’s very colourful and pretty. Big neon lights everywhere too. It’s a stunning vibe.”

Claire Mooney, triple j (Reija Lee)

“Stepping out on your own can be intimidating but you’re born to be a standalone star.”

Tommy Faith, triple j (Reija Lee)

“There was never any doubts of Reija Lee being a one-trick pony considering her position as one of our electronic scene’s most visible members, but coming in hot with a new track premiering today, it’s evident that Reija is truly in her element when she’s on her own.”

Pilerats (Reija Lee)

“Reija Lee, playing outside at The Wickham, promises to “amp it up a little” at the beginning of her set. The musical chameleon delivers a varied collection of pop and electro numbers, switching between bass and vocals and winning over a seated audience in no time at all. Her voice and performance deserves a bigger stage.”

GEOFF ACHISON & STEVE SEDEGREEN TALK BLUES/JAZZ AT RICHMOND CENTRAL CLUB THIS SUNDAY ARVO FOR DOUBLE TROUBLE BLUES SESSIONS

by the partae July 17, 2023
written by the partae

TICKETS LINK

You both bring your own unique flavour of Blues (Geoff) and Jazz (Steve) in that shared space. Particularly with you both leading the jam, how do you expect to manage and lead Kaliopi & the Blues Messengers during the jam?

G – I spent many years touring as a solo artist and having backing groups supplied for me at various destinations. It wasn’t unusual for me to meet the band as we were plugging in our amps and tuning up. It was a steep learning curve, but over time I developed a range of techniques for assessing where the individual & collective strengths lay, and an inner repertoire of blues standards that could be whipped into some sort of shape to create a night’s entertainment for the crowd. It is slightly terrifying, but that’s also what makes it exhilarating. It’s a good crew and they are all stonking good players, so I am simply looking forward to it!

S – I will let it evolve and provide some direction if needed, making sure all musicians feel safe, and can be themselves to express their voice.

Back in the day at Dizzy’s on Swan St we used to have a Blues night on Cup Eve. It was always a huge success with Geoff and I “meeting in the middle” as he tried to be more ‘Jazzier’ and I tried to be more ‘Bluesy’ the result was always unexpected, but great fun and very enjoyable for all.

Geoff, you’ve recently been in the studio recording a new acoustic album. Can we expect you to shed some of your new material or recent recordings in your solo set prior to the all-in jam?

G – Yeah, I’ll play a solo set to kick off the day, and there‘ll likely be a few of the tracks I’ve recorded for the solo album. The main crux of that project is that it’s all direct to tape, no overdubs, just me with my acoustic guitar, and intended for release on vinyl. So it’s old-school recording showcasing a few newies mixed with some old faves which have never been available on wax before. In any case, the solo acoustic set-up allows me the freedom to simply play whatever pops into my head. I can change the chord sequence, the key and even the tempo if I want to if that’s where the feeling takes me. A lot of young artists use loops and pedals with their acoustic guitars these days, and they sound amazing, but I’m still kicking it with wood, wire and my bare hands. It’s simply the purest and most honest music can get.

What significance is Richmond’s Central Club Hotel for you both?

G – The good old Central Club was a venue I used to make a weekly excursion to for their Tuesday night jam session way back in the 1980’s. It usually featured all manner of up and coming bands playing a variety of styles whether it was blues, folk, punk, rock, pop, jazz or ska. in the 90’s, it became a favourite for national and international blues acts. In 1995 I played a set at The Central Club that won me a ticket to the USA to play the 12th Annual Blues Talent Competition in Memphis Tennessee. So yeah, the good ol’ Central Club has always had a place in showcasing and promoting local music in Melbourne. It is just awesome to be returning there for this the next Double Trouble Blues Sessions.

S – I have a very close relationship with that venue, I have launched CD’s there, I house my Concert Grand Piano there, hosted many performances there and continue to hold regular performance workshops there.

The Hotel of course has a very strong legacy and historical context of great Australian music and bands.

You have both mentored and taught Kaliopi, how do you think your blended qualities will transcend into her performance or the all-in- jam set?

G – There’s no doubt it, Steve is the maestro here, but I just love that Kal has taken the opportunity to learn from as broad a range of musicians as she can. The blues is a huge story of which jazz is a major part. My approach probably leans more towards a roots-rock style, whilst Steve’s musicality embraces a style so broad that it defies definition. It’s something we all aspire to achieve, but for my part, I am hoping to learn a lot from Sunday’s gig with Steve & Kal.

S – Kali has a deep emotional connection to music particularly the Blues, and so is ideally suited to this music. The essence of the blues is achieved by playing with honesty and from the heart with a firm sense of self belief. Kali already has these qualities and so will only offer a deeper experience and performance.

SIR WINSTON unveils hypnotic new single ‘PERFECTLY NUMB’ Fuelling the indie-sleaze resurgence, a second taste of debut EP.

by the partae July 5, 2023
written by the partae

Sir Winston, the electronic maverick, known for his captivating blend of indie-sleaze and infectious dance beats, is back with a new single, ‘Perfectly Numb.’ The anticipated track serves as the second tantalizing preview of his forthcoming  EP, ‘Démons à Combattre,’ slated for release later this year. Building on the success of his previous single, ‘Sex in Paris,’ Sir Winston continues to captivate listeners with his unique sonic vision.

“Perfectly numb is a state of self-induced deluded reality. A moment where you’re between worlds, unable to function or react. Alone in a strange but content peace. Beyond all limits – at a point of no immediate return.” Sir Winston

Perfectly Numb envelops listeners in an electro-hazy dance-floor soundscape that evokes the spirit of 2010’s indie-sleaze peak, drawing inspiration from acclaimed acts such as LCD Soundsystem & MGMT, with a hint of darker rock elements – à la Nine Inch Nails, and the upbeat drive of classic New Order.

With this release, Sir Winston re-affirms the resurgence of the decade defining bloghaus genre propelling it into the present with a fresh and compelling perspective.

Recorded at Transmitter Studios in Brooklyn, New York, ‘Perfectly Numb’ was brought to life by Sir Winston and his longtime collaborator and fellow producer, Abe Seiferth (RAC, Car Seat Headrest, Yeasayer).

“Everything flowed and ran like a dream making Perfectly Numb. We had found the new sound we were after. Completing it was total joy – I left the studio that day beaming. I love the arpeggiated synth riff – the track grew from that riff and the bass line. Dropping guitar solos over the track was so much fun. I’d been talking about the state of being “Perfectly Numb” with a friend the night before, and when the synth part was looping in the studio I yelled “this is making me perfectly numb” – Booooooom!” Sir Winston

Sir Winston is a prolific and diverse artist who thrives on the affinity between music and fashion. His music has been used in large-scale fashion campaigns including NIKE, VOGUE, Victoria’s Secret & Maybelline. He’s also designed and dropped several sustainable clothing collections under the name Sir Winston, culminating in a recent Pop-Up installation on the Lower East Side in Manhattan New York. His previous single ‘Sex in Paris’ garnered significant airplay on prominent radio stations such as Aussie Music Weekly, Coast FM, Joy FM, Phoenix FM, Southern FM, 2SER, 89.7FM, and 107.3FM. With ‘Perfectly Numb,’ he aims to captivate an even broader audience, taking his music to new heights.

This latest single serves to build anticipation for the release of Sir Winston’s debut EP ‘Démons à Combattre’. With his infectious energy, hypnotic melodies, and enticing lyrics, this single, like the ones before it, promises to be an electrifying addition to the electronic music landscape.

SHADY NASTY DIG DEEPER ON NEW SINGLE ‘G-SHOCK’ + TOURING EAST COAST THIS JULY

by the partae July 1, 2023
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR SHADY NASTY

“The trio’s sound is as inscrutable as ever: lyrics are written like text exchanges between
gym junkies while the instrumentals are jenga towers of hip-hop beats,
slowcore guitars and punk vocals
“
NME

“Jittery and tense blasts of sketchy rock that sounds like kids born in the late 90s have
discovered some early Helmet or Mark of Cain records. This is good rowdy stuff”

VICE

“The Australian trio’s sound can turn on a dime between ethereally pretty and menacingly dark”
Kerrang!

“The atmosphere is unsettling in a similar way to Show Me The Body’s songs”
Stereogum

“Rare units and they’re not afraid to mess with your ears“
Dave Ruby Howe (triple j Unearthed)

“When people say there’s no band quite like Shady Nasty in Australia,
it’s not some hyperbole or over-exaggeration”

Pilerats

Shady Nasty, Eora / Sydney’s cult alt-punk trio debut their latest single ‘G-SHOCK’ ahead of their upcoming east coast tour in July. LISTEN + WATCH HERE.

‘G-SHOCK’ is an extension of classic Shady Nasty teemed with their most overtly personal vignettes yet. Skittish guitars sketch deeper than before, playing with pop-punk riffs and harpsichord as vocalist Kevin Stathis dreams of twilight moments spent with his most prized automobile obsession – at the behest of the every day that interrupts those moments. ‘G-SHOCK’ revels in his desire to get to his next drive, toying with the edges of hobby, passion and infatuation, his vocals as detached and dissociated as ever, stocky in sound and stature.

Produced by The Presets’ Kim Moyes, the single straddles a prelude to the cost of every upgrade and car mod – and its justification at any cost – against yearning for the early discovery of an untapped subculture, memories bumming around Liverpool gripped by a Hulk-like chokehold. In their own words, “G-SHOCK is the next chapter of Kevin’s blinding obsession with hotted up cars. The tedium of daily life is clouded by accelerated visions of yet another modification and stretch of empty asphalt.”

Shady Nasty is a band that operates on an oxymoron – a post-punk outfit whose most popular songs (‘Get Buff‘, ‘R0LL1N’ H1LLZ‘, ‘PRETTYB0YZ‘) circulate on calm, sombre melodies that balance both electronic and hip hop driven impulses. Anthropologists of their own world, their music is rife with intelligent observations about the burgeoning algorithm of life. Their recent single ‘CHEST HEIGHT’ is just one of many examples of Shady Nasty’s abilities to refract growing pains into social commentary through their enduring motif – a serious, long-term relationship with cars.

Their second EP CLUBSMOKE, a blurry-eyed meditation on vlogging, gymming, clubbing and clout, the group saw international acclaim from NME, Stereogum, Kerrang, DIY, New Noise, BPM, and locally from triple j’s Home and Hosed, Something More and Unearthed, FBi Radio, 2SER, RAGE, Pilerats and Purple Sneakers. Its success took the group to their debut UK/EU tour with a sold-out Oxford Art Factory home show, full of devout adherents that propelled a heaving mosh. Now in 2023 Shady Nasty steady for their next gear shift.

‘G-SHOCK‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

The accompanying video includes tour footage as well as stunning imagery from the Great Barrier Reef and the band’s hometown of Yirrkala in North East Arnhem Land. Dive in and let the magic of King Stingray wash over you! Manymak!

King Stingray recently celebrated a huge win in the 2022 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, with their song ‘Milkumana,’ claiming 1st prize, and ‘Camp Dog’ taking out 3rd place.

The band have also recently released a mini-documentary from their 2022 album tour which captures the electrifying energy of their shows and the infectious joy that radiates from the stage. Spag Heddy Finally Releases His Highly-Anticipated Debut Studio Album – ‘The Noodle Effect’

by the partae June 18, 2023
written by the partae

Artist: Spag Heddy
Title: The Noodle Effect
Label: Self-release

Download / Stream

After much anticipation and quite some time after its initially announced release date, Spag Heddy‘s debut album – “The Noodle Effect,” is finally out – and trust us, it’s worth the wait. Featuring an impressive 17 tracks, 14 of which are brand new, the body of work is an ode to Spag‘s true evolution as an artist over the last few years. While some tracks, like his recently released “Hammer Time” and the album’s “Fragga,” stay true to Spag Heddy‘s original bass-heavy style, what’s most noteworthy about it are the tracks that demonstrate his stepping outside of the box. In songs like “Vertigo,” “Imagination,” and “Voices,” the Dutch-born, Spain-based producer explores a softer, emotive sound with vocal-driven, melodic electronic ballads. Read on for more about his inspiration behind the album and press play on “The Noodle Effect” to usher in the new era of Spag Heddy.

“With this album, I wanna showcase more of myself than just the headbanger dubstep that I’m known for nowadays. This album made a perfect home for some of my productions that are not dancefloor-aimed but that I absolutely love and have wanted for so long to see the light of day. While a few of these tracks have been years in the making, others are brand new and show what I’m currently vibing with. Thanks to this project, I rediscovered my love and motivation to make melodic and timeless music, whether it’s DJ-friendly and/or danceable or not. ‘The Noodle Effect‘ couldn’t be a better title because it is on-brand, but it also means traveling into a singularity, which essentially is to become timeless.” – Spag Heddy

The Netherlands-born and Spain-based Spag Heddy has been cooking up dubstep hits since 2011, when his club bangers quickly got the attention of fans and industry tastemakers alike. With Skrillex, Rusko, Excision and others counted among his inspirations, Spag has gained widespread acclaim for his hard-hitting and yet melodic style that always feels fresh and forward-thinking. He has multiple successful singles as well as remixes and collaborations for The Chainsmokers, Krewella, SLANDER, and originals that can be heard in sets of Skrillex, Excision, Subtronics, NGHTMRE and many other heavyweights. His high-energy, mesmerizing sets have earned him tours with Zomboy and Flux Pavilion as well as direct support for Excision and Zeds Dead, plus a number of his own headlining tours around the globe. Now on the eve of releasing his most exciting project to date, Spag Heddy is well on his way to the top.
