Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks – Release Evocative Debut Album ‘the nighttime, the wind, the crocodile’

by the partae February 1, 2024
written by the partae

SUPPORT FOR SINGLES OFF ‘THE NIGHTTIME, THE WIND, THE CROCODILE’

“This is the most heartwrenching, stand-in-a-field-and-cry piece of music I’ve heard all year. Will always love hearing what you’ve written.” – ★★★★★
Pip Rasmussen – triple j (AUS)

“Davies’ raw Australian lilt still remains centre stage, carrying the narrative of feeling lost and directionless.”
NME (AUS)

“Really loving the tender restraint, the air between the microphones, the gentle melodies and the climactic pay-off towards the end of the song – proof that subtlety goes a long way.” – ★★★★
Colby Robertson – triple j (AUS)

“Jack Davies is one of the most brilliant songwriters in the country right now.”
Pilerats (AUS)

‘This Highway Is Stained’ added to Spotify’s ‘Chilled Afternoon’

‘Clothes Peg’ added to Apple Music’s ‘indie + chill’

‘Clothes Peg’ added to triple j Unearthed Rotation

Boorloo/Perth-based indie-folk band Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks have just unveiled their alt-country debut album, ‘the nighttime, the wind, the crocodile‘ – produced by lead vocalist Jack Davies and Broderick Madden Scott.

‘the nighttime, the wind, the crocodile’ is an inviting 11-track amalgamation of nostalgia, mellifluous vocal layers and vintage-filtered instruments. Creating an artful balance between tradition and modern folk, the collection gracefully blankets each track in a sepia-toned haze, seamlessly intertwining threads of the past with the present.

Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks talk about the inspiration behind ‘the nighttime, the wind, the crocodile’:

“‘the nighttime, the wind, the crocodile’ is set in a nighttime scene. A crocodile descends from the sky like an apocalyptic cartoon, hungry for guts. The listener sits below, hands over their ears and their eyes closed. The trees sways, the moon watches. I think the idea of the album is to open your eyes in that scene and witness the crocodile. To remember that morning is around the corner, and darkness around the next. To attempt to keep looking long enough to see the colours shift, the crocodile disappear, reappear; and find beauty in the never-ending psychedelic whirl of fears and changes that we are plunged into as thinking, feeling human beings.”

Focus track ‘My Hard Times‘ and ‘The Colours‘ opens the record, resonating with sentiment and vivid imagery, adorned with introspective reflections and compelling storytelling. Singles ‘Clothes Peg‘ and ‘This Highway Is Stained‘ follow, with acoustic strumming and gentle instrumentation providing a kaleidoscope of sonic hues.

Marking the centre of the compilation, ‘Orange Peel‘ weaves rapid guitar arpeggios and lush strings, incorporating lyrical palettes of memory and ambience. In contrast, ‘You‘ve Got The Fear‘ introduces a rich rhythm arrangement, laying the foundation for whispered vocal tales that ebb and flow.

‘Everybody‘s Looking‘ and ‘Thinking About The Blues‘ further amplify the sonic diversity with retro-infused guitar and strings, evoking a sense of old-timey musicality that crescendos to a captivating climax before ‘Pleased To Meet You‘ follows, providing an intimate sense of comfort.

Closing the release, ‘You Deserve To Be Loved‘ and ‘Little Dog‘ stand as poignant echoes to the project, painting amber hues that leave a lingering resonance of heartfelt emotion and reflective grace.

Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks were selected as triple j Unearthed‘s Feature Artist, as well as their music video for the single ‘Half Frozen Beer‘ being featured as rage‘s ‘Wild One‘. The band has also won the WAM Award for ‘Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Act‘ for four consecutive years since 2020. Their previous releases have garnered widespread recognition on Spotify, Apple Music, triple j and triple j Unearthed, along with support in the blogosphere from NME, Pilerats, The AU Review, LivewireAU, MILKY and numerous Australian community radio stations.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2024, 3 DAY x UNTITLED. FINALS FESTIVAL!

by the partae January 31, 2024
written by the partae

The Australian Open Finals Festival, held on the 25th, 27th, and 28th of January, marked the culmination of the 2024 Australian Open in Naarm/Melbourne, delivering an electrifying mix of music, entertainment, and cultural celebration. The festival, organized by Untitled Group, aimed to complement the diverse and multicultural nature of the Australian Open while ensuring it stands as an independent and vibrant event.

The festival’s final day coincided with the Men’s Final, transforming the John Cain Arena into a musical spectacle that drew record-breaking crowds. The atmosphere was nothing short of festive, with marquee dance music acts such as Rudimental and Groove Armada taking the stage. Rudimental, a multicultural UK collective, brought their energetic drum ‘n’ bass hits, celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut album “Home.” The crowd was treated to anthems like “Feel The Love,” “Waiting All Night,” and “These Days,” creating an infectious party vibe.

The festival also featured local talents, including Melburnian hotshot Cooper Smith, Samoan-Guringai DJ Latifa Tee, and Melbourne club DJ Sunshine with her Disco Faith Choir. The latter, donned in vibrant costumes, delivered soulful performances, covering songs like Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” and The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” infusing an Australian Mardi Gras aesthetic into the music.

Chenai, a gracefully soulful newcomer, took the spotlight, leading Rudimental in their 2023 UK hit “Dancing Is Healing” and introducing an unreleased cover of Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn.” The festival reached its climax with Groove Armada, known as ’90s UK dance ambassadors, taking the decks. Their set was a bold mix of classic crossover dance tunes, including Robin S’s “Show Me Love” and Daft Punk’s “One More Time.”

The festival’s success was not just about the music; it reflected the diversity and inclusivity of the Australian Open. From AO Pride Day with LGBTQIA+ artists like Peach PRC and DJ Luv You to the powerhouse performance by Tash Sultana, the festival showcased a wide range of talents. Tash Sultana’s return to the Melbourne stage after five years was a highlight, displaying their instrumental prowess and diverse musical styles.

On the electrifying  day of January 27th, the Australian Open Finals Festival dazzled with an exceptional roster of artists, infusing the air with a dynamic and eclectic musical atmosphere. The stage came alive with the captivating performances of Mell Hall, Tia Gostelow, The Jungle Giants, Ruel, and DMA’S. Each artist brought their distinctive flair and infectious energy, weaving together a tapestry of sound that not only defined the festival but also left the audience on a euphoric and unforgettable musical odyssey.

The festival’s evolution from the inaugural AO Finals Festival in 2023 to the upgraded John Cain Arena with double the capacity in 2024 demonstrated its growing popularity. Despite the challenge of rainy weather on AO Pride Day, the production quality remained high, featuring charismatic hosts like drag queen Courtney Act and striking visuals.

The Australian Open Finals Festival has solidified its place as a significant cultural event, not merely a musical satellite of the tennis tournament. It successfully weaves together mainstream and multicultural elements, delivering a unique and vibrant experience that adds an extra layer of joy to “The Happy Slam.” The diverse lineup and dynamic performances underscored the festival’s commitment to inclusivity and entertainment, making it a fitting conclusion to the 2024 Australian Open.

BRUNSWICK MUSIC FESTIVAL PAYS HOMAGE TO COMMUNITY IN 2024 LINEUP PEOPLE. PLACE. CULTURE. MUSIC.

by the partae January 24, 2024
written by the partae

Merri-bek City Council’s Brunswick Music Festival is BACK. March 3- 11, 2024.

After its triumphant return in 2023, Sydney Road Street Party will roll out on Sunday March 3, prickling the shopping strip with performance, art, delicious delights, spectacle, wonder and probably a harpist on a grassy knoll… just because.

Estonian House, sitting proud and unmissable on Melville Road, will once again be a bastion for premium performances.  The utterly iconic YOTHU YINDI bring their boundary-breaking music to Brunswick on March 5. Sullen, shoegaze-y, utterly sensational North Carolina five piece Wednesday are confirmed to appear on March 6. Iconic Zamibian Psych-rock band WITCH will fill the house on March 7. Gamelan DanAnda brings a family-friendly Balinese feast by way of Saudara Sound System w/ Komang, Joelistics and more on March 8. While on March 9 Naarm’s operators in the outsider underground – Crown Ruler, Slow Clap and Gut Health bring “Highly Contagious” a cutting-edge musical banquet from the vast corners of the global musical spectrum.
Over at Howler, MJ Lenderman and The Wind’s friendly, fuzzed out alt-country vignettes will soothe the soul on March 5.

The suburb’s best live music venues, bars, nooks, crannies and creative crevices are set to host music in all its conceivable forms. Jazzlab, Stay Gold, Howler, Brunswick Ballroom, The Retreat and more will bring a curated collection of performances to their stages. MzRizk takes over A1 Bakery and Brunswick Bowling Club gets in on the action.

The Australian Art Orchestra will explore the sonic potential of Coburg Town Hall, centering its famous organ in a series of commissioned works composed by AAO Artistic Director Aaron Choulai and Associate Sofia Carbonara. Simply, the SHUFFLE-PLAY program will be a fun and frankly, unmissable exploration of sound and space.

Blossom Rot Records, Bad Apples, Melbourne Electronic Sound Studios, MOM Gallery and Neurotiq Erotiq have all built their own epic events in this year’s lineup. You hear the phrase ‘something for everyone’ thrown around with reckless abandon but there’s a scant chance this collection of 60+ shows in 30+ venues will leave you wanting.

“Brunswick Music Festival is one of Australia’s premier annual music festivals, Merri-bek City Council Mayor Adam Pulford said.

“We are so excited to announce that Yothu Yindi will be headlining the Brunswick Music Festival this year, and we are lucky to have Brunswick’s iconic Estonian House as our major venue.

“This year we’re celebrating 36 years of the Brunswick Music Festival and its amazing history of music, culture, and community. We invite everyone, near and far, to join us at a gig, hang out at the Sydney Road Street Party and celebrate everything we love about Brunswick and our local Merri-bek music scene.”

Tickets are on sale now.

PEACH PRC, TASH SULTANA & YAEJI TO LEAD AUSTRALIAN OPEN PRIDE DAY LINEUP AT FINALS FESTIVAL

by the partae January 18, 2024
written by the partae

In just one week The Australian Open will celebrate diversity and inclusion at its Pride Day on Thursday, 25th January. LGBTQI+ advocates Peach PRC and AO Pride Ambassador Tash Sultana, along with ‘Raingurl’ creator Yaeji, are just a glimpse of the incredible lineup who will be playing at Finals Festival that day. They will be joined by Djanaba, Anesu, and DJ Luv You, taking over John Cain Arena.

AO Pride Day serves as a powerful statement, showcasing the Australian Open’s commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for the LGBTQI+ community. Pride Day was initially conceptualised by the Australian Open in recognition that some members of the LGBTQI+ community have historically felt excluded in sporting environments.

Beyond the excitement of the Finals Festival, Pride Day promises to be a spectacle with roaming drag queens and kings, glam stations offering instant makeovers, rainbow roller skaters, and the iconic Rod Laver Arena will be illuminated in a dazzling array of rainbow colours come evening.

After a massively successful, sold-out Finals Festival last year at Kia Arena, the festival will this year take place in the John Cain Arena boasting the biggest open air music performance the John Cain Arena has seen in the history of its existence.

On Woman’s final day, Saturday 27th January fan favourite DMA’S will take the stage along with Australian indie rock royalty, The Jungle Giants, ARIA Award winning Ruel, Tia Gostelow and Melbourne based DJ Mell Hall.

On Men’s final day, Sunday 28th January you can expect epic British superstars Groove Armada and Rudimental, Latifa Tee, Sunshine & Disco Faith Choir and local DJ Cooper Smith.

With tickets being hot property you have two options. Match goers are able to upgrade any tennis match ticket to get access to Finals Festival that day. Alternatively, fans can purchase a dedicated Finals Festival day ticket which automatically includes a ground pass to enjoy all the incredible music, food and beverages AO has to offer. Match ticket upgrades start at $40.00 and Finals Festival day passes (including ground pass) start at $69.

Untitled Group, Australia’s largest independent music and events promoter are leading the music programming, returning for their second year. The group are best known for music festivals such as Beyond The Valley, Wildlands, Grapevine Gathering and Ability Fest.

Tickets are on sale now. Visit Untitled Group’s Website for tickets and more information.

Sydney Melodic Metal Quartet FIFTH DAWN Announce ‘Closer’ February 2024 East Coast Tour

by the partae January 12, 2024
written by the partae

Sydney quartet Fifth Dawn are set to bring their explosive brand of melodic metal across Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne for their ‘Closer’ February 2024 East Coast tour. Featuring exhilarating fretwork, vibrant synths, cinematic orchestral arrangements, and a groove-oriented rhythm section bolstering Sam Faul’s powerhouse vocals, the group delivers infectious melodies akin to Evanescence and Flyleaf.

Renowned for their introspective and emotionally charged compositions, Fifth Dawn have continued to captivate audiences globally since the release of their debut album ‘Duality’ (2018). The band’s resurgent popularity is undeniable, as evidenced by their recent single launch at the Oxford Art Factory, Sydney and their appearance at Thrashville Festival alongside Australian veterans COG and Mammal. Additionally, Fifth Dawn‘s music has found its place in editorial playlists on major streaming platforms such as Spotify with over 11 million+ streams, Apple Music, Amazon, and AWA.

Their latest offering ‘The Day Brings’ has been featured on Spotify’s All New Metal, Apple Music’s, The Riff, Breaking Hard Rock, New Music Daily, and Deezer’s Metal Radar, Heavy League, Metalcore editorial playlists and more. Gearing up to unleash their high energy performances with drop tuned riffs rooted in heavy metal, evocative vocals and chant along choruses, Fifth Dawn’s upcoming shows are not to be missed.

“We’re all so excited for this tour” says Faul, “With an inspiring lineup, and our new songs to showcase to our home and interstate fans, I’ve no doubt these shows will be magical.”

Qona Creative on the upcoming tour: “Australia is bursting with diverse talent on the local level. We’re passionate about fostering not only diversity but great music in a safe environment that is personally and professionally important for these bands’ performances.”

Accompanying Fifth Dawn are Sydney nu-punk outfit Aurateque. Delivering a captivating crossroads for chaos and composure, the group offers a unique, punk-infused blend of alternative metal that is strikingly unorthodox, yet infectiously palatable. The release of their debut EP ‘The Dragonfly Pursuit’ was received well by fans and media alike with over 150,000+ Spotify streams and features on triple j, Music Feeds, Kill Your Stereo, Spaceuntravel and more. Their electrifying live performances has seen them tour nationally and support Ghostseeker (ex-Storm The Sky), Eat Your Heart Out, Patient Sixty-Seven, RedHook; and secure a coveted showcase appearance at BIGSOUND 2023.

With supports from Noctica (heavy alt-pop) and Bridge Left To Burn (metalcore) in Sydney, Torizon (alt-metal) and The Atomic Beau Project (electronic rock) in Brisbane, and New Million (alt-metal), 50Fifty (alt-rock) in Melbourne, this tour is exactly what fans of alternative metal and modern rock have been waiting for. Grab your tickets now for this one-of-a-kind sonic adventure.
