Turning seven is not to be taken lightly! And we at Cake believe if you’re going to throw yourself a birthday party, do it right. It stands to reason then that the 2019 edition will possibly the strongest one yet. Huge drawcards including Bicep (Live), Peggy Gou, Opiuo and Midland will see in the new year alongside many others. And if that isn’t enough to satiate the taste buds, we present you with another round of artists which include international beatsmith Mr Carmack, and a selection of local DJs that should add the cherry to the top of the cake…

Mr. Carmack (USA)

Mr. Carmack, the title of Honolulu based Aaron Carmack, has been taking the instrumental hip-hop world by storm and with featured spots on Los Angeles-based record labels Soulection, Team Supreme and an official release on Mad Decent, he shows no signs of slowing down. His eclectic mix of handclaps and melting beats, with the kind of swing to his percussion that can’t be taught, make a signature to even his most opposed tracks – future-embracing club tracks sit next to lush, delicate soulful tunes – with a shift so subtle it’s unsurprising he’s a multi-instrumentalist playing no short of the French horn, piano, drums, bass, guitar and ukulele. soundcloud

Merve (AUS)

Merve laid down her rhythmic roots in Melbourne, booking, managing and creating sets for music events. It wasn’t long until she found her rightful place behind the decks, playing alongside prominent musicians; Objekt, The Black Madonna, Honey Dijon, Barbara Tucker, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Jane Fitz and Virginia. Her sounds have also echoed through the speakers during peak slots at festivals such as Golden Plains, Hopkins Creek and across the stages of Strawberry Fields. Merve’s sets demonstrate an individual sound that is made up of house, acid, tribal, techno and disco with leftfield oddities sprinkled throughout. soundcloud

Love Deluxe (AUS)

Mysterious Sydney musician Love Deluxe is an unknown quantity but a very familiar feeling. Conjuring images of hot days and longs nights, LD makes music to worship the sun to. Sprinkling cosmic synth lines over dusty drums that pack a punch, Love Deluxe makes you miss what you never had but always deserved. Originally composing music as the band leader at a local discotheque for good-looking tourists and rich locals alike, Love Deluxe takes cues from artists such as Roy Ayers, Man Parrish and Steely Dan alongside Japanese funk maestros like Tatsuro Yamashita and Taeko Ohnuki. His music channels an almost tangible warmth which teleports the listener to another era and often another place. soundcloud

Jess Zammitt (AUS)

Infected with a fascination for exploring the narrative in music, for Jess selection is far more than just sound, genre or labels. The track needs meaning and with meaning comes purpose. Whilst Jess maintains an unfettered approach to such selection, her worldly taste often finds her visiting Belgian New Beat, Dutch EBM chuggers and energetic Italo oddities. The calm nature and ever-present smile of Jess Zammit is one of the more misleading cues in the DJ circuit. Her energy behind the decks is frenetic and her sound, often twisted. This commitment to her craft has seen her support internationals including Hodge and DJ Slyngshot, and landed her sets at this years’ Strawberry Fields and Hopkins Creek festivals. Salvador Darling (AUS)

Pursuing dance as a journey of multisensory exploration, the Salvador Darling experience is a holistic marriage of ultra considered production synced with the delivery of music. An artist on many levels, Salvador is deeply involved in the considered curation of aesthetics, the stages, the shows, performances and promoters of his gigs. Bicep (Live) (UK)

If there is one act who can lay claim to owning 2018 so far it will be Ireland’s Bicep. Their self-titled debut album shot to the top of many best-of-2017 lists, laying the foundation for a 2018 which can only be described as a year where they went from one’s to watch to dead set headliners. Their live shows are selling out globally in record time, the most recent example being three shows at the three thousand capacity Printworks in London which all sold out in minutes of its announcement. The duo is by far one of the biggest electronic music acts in the world, and easily one of Melbourne’s favourite international artists. This will be the first time the duo bring their critically acclaimed live show to Let Them Eat Cake. soundcloud

Motor City Drum Ensemble (GER)

Simultaneously retro and futuristic, German House pioneer Danilo Plessow, ‘MCDE’, is a reference to his home-town as to his first love in music, the soul, jazz and techno sounds of Detroit. As Danilo stays true to his underground roots with a variety of projects, he has managed to be published on no less than 25 labels. Today MCDE is renowned for his eclectic taste in music and his technical wizardry in producing, both of which have made him a globally profiled DJ and producer, who has been re-defining house music over the last years. soundcloud 

Ama Lou (UK)

Authentic, natural, soulful, Ama Lou has already gracefully established herself as a rising star with just a handful of songs. Born and raised in London and classically trained as a singer, she made her musical and visual introduction to the world with ‘TBC’ in 2016, which immediately put her on the map as one to watch. A complete DIY artist, Ama Lou writes and produces her own music (alongside collaborations) and creates all her own visuals and films with her sister Mahalia. Her next project ‘DDD’ is a three-part film and EP directed and co-produced by her, made up of a triptych of music videos individually set at Dawn, Day and Dusk, following the character of Ama Lou, a younger in an LA crime ring, over the course of a single day. soundcloud

CC:Disco! (AU)

Playing disco, house and boogie cuts with her heart at the controls, CC triggers a joyous feedback loop that infects the dancefloor. There’s no pretention, only pure feeling. A mainstay of the Melbourne club scene, CC began connecting with audiences just like the heroes before her – through FM radio. Having presented shows since the age of 15, her weekly slot on local institution PBS FM ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ is now celebrated as the essential start to every Friday night. All of this airtime has primed her to knock out guest spots on NTS, Red Light Radio and Dublab. In recent years, CC’s devotion has seen her graduate to touring DJ and main stage festival act. soundcloud

Chaos In The CBD (NZ)

Perhaps best known for their stratified, ear-catching rhythms, Chaos In The CBD is the house moniker of New Zealand brothers Ben and Louis Helliker-Hales. Though their music evokes the time-honoured heritage of classic house, their interpretation of jazz brings a unique inventiveness to the genre. With ever-strengthening production credentials, and infectious, joyous rapport while performing, Chaos In The CBD has marked themselves as one of the most eminent underground house artists to emerge out of the South Pacific. The pair split their time between the studio and performing around North America, Europe and the UK, as well as their native home in New Zealand. soundcloud

   

DJ Boring (AUS)

In 2016, Tristan Hallis, better known as DJ Boring, sent shockwaves through the underground when his track “Winona” appeared on the iconic Slav Youtube channel. The track, comprised of simple, melodramatic chords, modulated acidic klangs, a syncopated, chilled out 909 groove, and a sampled Winona Ryder interview, not only changed the landscape of house music but seemed to define dance music for a new generation. Hallis’ abilities are beyond simply being able to write clever melodies and stomping rhythms. His unique talent lies in knowing when to pull back, when to go all in, when to pause – an instinct that usually takes years of development, and that he further demonstrates with his prowess behind the decks. Since his debut on DJ Haus’ E-Beamz, he has released music on Lost Palms, LPH White, and his newly founded label, Vienna. soundcloud 

 

DJ Tennis (ITA)

Founder and A&R of Life and Death, Manfredi Romano grew up tour-managing punk bands and organising left-field music events in Italy around the turn of the millennium. Manfredi then went on to form DAZE, Italy’s first booking agency solely devoted to electronic music. Drawing on two decades of experience behind the scenes, Romano shifted focus in 2010, establishing himself as a DJ in his own right and building upon his vinyl record collection – which now numbers over eleven-thousand strong. Today the Italian is considered one of the world’s most revered selectors, an artist who commands your attention in a way that is undeniable. soundcloud


Esther Silex (GER)
Esther Silex: deejay extraordinaire, Colognian woman-about-town and a newly minted card-carrying member of the Studio Barnhus family (the label co-founded by Swedish star Axel Boman and Kornel Kovacs). She has an unquestionable status as an impassioned powerhouse with enough West German swagger to create timeless music with equal parts simplicity and beauty. Her sets are anything but predictable, with an eclectic selection that somehow weaves seamlessly through techno and house to soul, funk, afro and disco. soundcloud
  
Flava D (UK)
Flava D is at the meeting point of house, UK Garage and grime with salutations for her versatile productions coming from veterans like DJ EZ and frequent collaborator Wiley. As a core member of the Butterz record label she has toured extensively internationally across the UK, Europe, Australia and Asia winning over ravers with her energetic club sets. She is a prolific producer and remixer and in the last 12 months, her remixes for Craig David and Diplo have amassed hundreds of thousands of plays. Her part as 1/3 of Garage supergroup ‘t q d’ alongside Royal-T & DJ Q has seen even more productions hit the airwaves. soundcloud

 
Joe Kay (USA)
Joe Kay is the CEO and co-founder of Soulection, a globally recognized platform for future music and artist development. As Head of A&R as well as a host of Soulection Radio on Beats1 and an active DJ in the worldwide music community, Joe oversees all artists while digging for the timeless “Sound of Tomorrow” to share with the world. Kahn and Neek (UK)
Hailing from Bristol (U.K) and having grown up immersed in the city’s renowned culture of sound systems, punk rock and hip hop; Kahn and Neek is at the forefront of the new wave of Bristol producers and DJs and they are considered one of the leaders of the UK Grime sound that is currently permeating global music. Their production style tends to draw influence from dub reggae, early 2000’s grime, digital dancehall, UK steppers and music from across the 140bpm spectrum. As part of the Young Echo collective, Kahn has also explored other areas of electronic music and incorporates his own vocals and instrumentation into his sound. Midland (UK)

Midland made his 2010 debut alongside longtime friend Pearson Sound with their anthemic track “Your words matter”, a track that would go on to be placed in DJ Mag’s “100 most important house records” feature. Within the track the pair wove, defied and played with a number of genres and, in doing so, Midland laid a clear foundation stone for his vision of how electronic music could be. It is a sound that is rooted in house and techno but with the rumbling low end of Dubstep and widescreen experimentation of classic electronica. The will be the highly popular artist’s first Melbourne performance since his highly talked about set at Pitch Music & Arts Festival in 2017. soundcloud

Moxie (UK)

Moxie is many things: a Londoner born and bred, raised on raving and records; a seasoned DJ, playing big-room clubs and sweatbox basements worldwide; a charming radio host, as at home on national FM as regional stations and independent start-ups. It’s this balancing act between the underground and the mainstream that’s seen her become one of the UK’s hottest DJs. Nightmares on Wax (DJ Set) (UK)

George Evelyn, the man behind Nightmares on Wax, is responsible for creating one of the defining moments of the 90’s: Smoker’s Delight, a downbeat opus and the archetype 90’s stoner album. The effect of Smokers Delight was palpable as it is considered one of the main catalysts in the explosion of the chill out / downtempo genre today. Today, Nightmares on Wax is one of the most influential artists of a generation, his music has inspired many musicians and producers across the globe over his quarter decade career. He’s performed alongside the likes of MC Hammer and Bassnectar, reached #1 chart positions on Beatport, Addictech, and iTunes, and his full-length release, “Slurp And Giggle” was nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Release at the Australian Independent Music Awards (and it was also the most downloaded album for on addictech.com the year of its release). His remix credits span world renown artistic icons like Infected Mushroom and Kaya Project, and music from the Opiuo Lab can be found on television, in documentaries, on the radio (BBC Radio One + JJJ) and specifically selected for compilations by artists such as BT (Black Hole Recordings). Peggy Gou (GER)

Born and raised in South Korea and now residing in Berlin following several years studying in London, Peggy Gou made her recording debut in January 2016 on Radio Slave’s Rekids label. Since then Peggy has gone on to arguably become the most popular DJ on the globe. Not only is she a model, fashionista, songstress, DJ and all-round beautiful soul, she knows what constitutes a good earworm: Her single ‘It Makes You Forget’, released earlier this year on tastemaker imprint Ninja Tunes, is a prime example of dance music gone pop, and will go down as one of the European summer’s biggest tracks. After a solid 2018 of shows and releases, Perth based rapper José Halftime is closing off the year in style with his latest single ‘Cashmere’. The self produced street anthem is a testament to Jose’s brand that has earned him a spot in the new wave of Australian Hip-Hop, playing showcases across the country including the annual WVS showcase in Melbourne and Get Bodied Festival in Perth earlier this year.

‘Cashmere’ serves as a reminder to those persisting with their dreams as Jose urges his audience to keep pushing through any hardships they may have been dealt. Motor City Drum Ensemble’s to play at The Forum Theatre!

German House pioneer Motor City Drum Ensemble AKA MCDE is easily one of the most celebrated house acts of this generation.

His technical ability, turntable skills and vast musical taste has seen him perform across the globe at all the premier venues and festivals. With his deep knowledge of electronic music and a great ear for melodies, he has become a mainstay of the contemporary house scene.

The tastemaker, who will be playing at the upcoming Let Them Eat Cake NYD 2019, has announced that he will play a headline sideshow at The Forum. This is a very rare opportunity to see the scene legend in one of Melbourne’s most famous venues.

QUEEN’S ICONIC “BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY” BECOMES THE MOST-STREAMED SONG FROM THE 20TH CENTURY

‘Greatest Rock Song of All Time’ Breaks Records as it passes 1.6 Billion Streams

Universal Music Group (UMG), today announced “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the iconic single by British rock legends Queen, officially became the world’s most-streamed song from the 20th Century, as well as the most-streamed Classic Rock song of all time.  UMG’s teams around the world have actively promoted discovery across streaming platforms, physical reissues, merchandise and experiential programs to introduce ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ to new fans more than 40 years after it was first recorded.  Today, the original song and official video for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” taken from Queen’s seminal 1975 album A Night At The Opera, surpassed 1.6 billion streams globally across all major streaming services. 

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is regularly cited as one of the greatest songs ever recorded. In 2004, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and Freddie Mercury’s vocal performance was named by the readers of Rolling Stone magazine as the best in rock history.  In Australia, the single re-entered the ARIA Top 20 in November 2018, the first time since its inclusion in the Wayne’s World film in 1992.

The instantly recognizable anthem also has been buoyed by the success of the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody, which tells the incredible story of the band’s storied career. In just five weeks on release the film has become the highest grossing music biopic in history.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?


I live in Melbourne, the best music scene in the world.


How did you first start playing music?

I grew up attending gigs and festivals with my family, eventually leading to learning various instruments and forming bands with friends.


Your new track ‘Catch Me On Your Way Down’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

The songwriting side of the track came from reference literature and personal experiences. The combination of the two helped to create something that is largely autobiographical but also ambiguous.

The sound of the song came from the hybrid between west-coast US rock and alt-country. Picture a crossover between artists like Tom Petty, Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, Middle Kids etc.  


Where and when did you record?

Catch Me On My Way Down was recorded between June 2017 and March 2018. Mostly out of a studio called The Aviary in Abbotsford. It’s part of a larger body of work that was pieced together throughout that time period.


What programs and equipment did you use?

Everything was tracked live into Pro Tools, with a few overdubs done at home by myself through Logic Pro. The track was produced and mixed by Greg Rietwyk. He uses a varied mix of outboard gear and plugins. I recall there being a lot of the Valhalla and Fabfilter plugs throughout the mixes, as well as a bunch of outboard compressors and EQ’s. A Roland Space Echo was used extensively when we had access to it.


How do you usually go about writing music?

I believe I’ve only recently found my writing niece, which I outlined briefly above. The use of reference literature to assist in creating and conveying personal experiences has enabled me to write far more in-depth and consistent songs. Typically I will start a song with a melody or chord progression and build the lyrics over it. Once I’ve reached a point I’m happy with, it will be taken to the band where everyone will add their spin on it, and normally more adjustments will happen from that point onwards.


How do you prepare for live shows and how would you describe your live shows?

Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. The live shows are extremely dynamic, I’d say it’s indicative of my songwriting. The set will often move from brash and overdriven tones to something slightly more stripped back and melodic. I can really display the different styles that my music covers in a gig, everything from rock to folk, to blues and acoustic.


Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve had Laura Jean’s record ‘Devotion’ on repeat since it’s release, one of the records of the year in my opinion.

Hiss Golden Messenger is a fairly recent discovery of mine, if you like folk/rock then he is definitely for you, released a million records and never written a bad song.

Your Smith is another new discovery, she’s only released a few tracks but you can tell she’s on the cusp of something huge. Really consice and creative pop-centred around good songwriting.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
Recently it’s hard to put my finger on where I am most of the time. My life is scattered between Tokyo, London and LA right now. I would say I’m most actively working in Tokyo at the moment thanks to my previous band. The music scenes are all so different. I feel Japan’s scene is more entertainment driven..LA feels much more open and diverse… London…I honestly don’t know that much about the scene yet… I hope to get to know it better in 2019.
You have an upcoming album that will be released in 2019, the first two singles so far have been ‘Terrible Voices’ and ‘5:35’ how has the reaction from fans been so far?
Overall it’s been really positive. But to be honest, a lot of the Japanese fans from my old band were (unpleasantly?) surprised at my new direction…haha but some have stayed with me. My new audience is very different and I have made new fans all around the world since these 2 track releases… it gives me   confidence to see that what I’m doing is being received the way I hoped.
Where and when did you record?
Terrible Voices is a bedroom recording, so to speak. I actually made the track in Starbucks in Tokyo, when I was still in Neko Punch. I generally play and record all the instruments myself but I made 5:35 last summer at Servant Records studio in LA.
What influenced the sound and songwriting for the album?
I’m not sure…I think I have to arrange the track to express things that I feel my voice can’t. I feel like I put a lot more detail into the arrangements than current artists. People say my album is more like a big 90s record. It makes sense because I still listen to a lot of late 80-90s music and I always go back to my childhood favorites like The Pixies and Nirvana when I’m short on motivation to write.
How do you usually go about writing and recording music?
I write for other artists sometimes and there are many ways to skin a cat – depending on the approach, the end-product can be completely different. I usually start with synth, bass, guitar or a beat. I don’t start with lyrics very often. I also tend to write loads of songs and pick out the ones I like the best.
What programs and equipment did you use to record the album?
The Softwares I use are Logic and Protools. Equipment wise – as I’m mostly a traveling DIY artist, to be honest, it’s not practical to use anything too fancy. I use a compact set up that I can travel with. It includes; a MacBook Pro, MOTU ultralite mk3 interface, AKG condenser microphone, Micro Korg, Midi Keyboard, Telecaster guitar and 4 or 5 of my favorite effects pedals. When I have access to a studio I normally re-record or re-amp stuff. I like to double up my fake drums with real drums and always put a real bass line on top of the synth sub bass. I think I probably work in a very weird way but after years of adaptation, I think I’ve developed a good system.
How have your first solo shows been as Cream with a K?
When I’m performing as Cream with a K, I’m so elated! I’ve had more fun playing live then ever before. It was a journey getting here but everything up to now seems to have had a reason and I’m so grateful I’ve made it to this point.
How was the Halloween show that you played in Tokyo?
It was a great turn out. The show was so packed, people couldn’t get in!! When I heard that, I felt so sorry that we didn’t do the show somewhere bigger but also happy that we    completely exceeded our expectations.
Please tell us about your career in Japan: 
I first got signed in Tokyo when I was 19 years old to a management called Oorong-Sha and got to work with my favorite producer of all time; Takeshi Kobayashi. Later, I major debuted in a group called Neko Punch from Universal Japan with a Management called Asobi System which is famous for having Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
The music and image was a pretty far stretch from what I’m doing now so people don’t even recognize that it was me and I don’t generally advertise the fact either. I am grateful for the opportunities I got though, it really helped me carve out my art and technique as well as taught me professionalism. I’ve jumped a lot of hoops up to now so I can probably write any kind of song if I’m asked… and after singing songs in Japanese most of my life … singing in english is super easy! I’m especially fast at remembering lyrics too. Haha.
What do you like to do away from music?
I love styling and directing photoshoots. I also really enjoy modeling – especially now that I’m able to pick my own jobs. I love clothes so much and somewhere down the line I’d like to make a fashion brand or do a vintage select shop.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
I recently picked up Skateboarding as a hobby and I’m super into it. So, I started               listening to Pavement and Weezer, whilst cruising around. I was never into those bands but I think I wasn’t listening to them in the right context, haha.
What do you have planned for the remainder of 2018 going into 2019?
The remainder of this year is busy. Currently I’m in Tokyo but I have some shows in London in the New Year, so I’m coming back next week to start rehearsals. I’m playing my first London show in January – I’m really excited.
Then, end of January, I’ll be heading out to the US.
Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love Crab! And obviously since last month my new favorite hangout is the Skate Park. My hair and make up artist also skates, so we hang out and skate around together. Sometimes we even go eat Crab too. Haha. It’s a pretty good life.

Brisbane’s Good Boy today return with their next politically-charged tune, ‘CRF’. The new single follows the band’s surprise track, ‘Sodabread’, which dropped earlier this month. The tracks offer up the first taste of Good Boy’s forthcoming debut album, due for release in the second half of 2019.

Having developed a loyal following through their often ruthless and always honest lyrical commentary on the world around them, Good Boy continue this trend with CRF. As best put by vocalist Rian King, “CRF stands for nothing, not unlike all round dislikeable bloke and pig in a wig, the dishonourable Joe Hockey. This absolute scumbag spends tax payer money on fancy food and plonk. He is a bit of a shit political figure and has little backbone. Enjoy the song”

After expanding to a quartet with the addition of bass guitarist Marli Smales, Good Boy are continuing to produce their beloved Aussie-tinged punk sound, with as much attitude as ever. This time around

however, the new-and-improved Good Boy welcome a horn section, whipped up by talented instrumentalists Daniel Grima and Matt Luff.

To bring ‘CRF’ to life, Good Boy worked with producer Tim Morrissey (The John Steel Singers) on the track, with engineering and mixing by Aidan Hogg, and mastering by Mikey Young.

Good Boy are endearingly unstoppable crafters of political and quintessentially Australian punk-fueled tunes, and if the last couple of years are anything to go by, the quartet are here to stick around.

With their debut release ‘Transparency’ scoring a high rotation add on triple j in late 2015, the then-trio landed in the top 15 most played tracks on the youth broadcaster, kicking off what was to be a hectic and fruitful musical trajectory.

In January 2016, the band was announced as winners of the triple j unearthed Laneway Festival competition, opening the Brisbane main stage to a packed-out crowd. Their debut EP ‘No Love For Back Home’ dropped that March, clocking up a massive amount of love from critics and fans alike, and saw the band play to capacity crowds in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane on their EP launch tour. All within the band’s first year, they racked up supports with Viet Cong, Homeshake, British India, The John Steel Singers, Jonathan Boulet, Velociraptor, Palms, and Northeast Party House to name just a few.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, Good Boy released their sophomore EP ‘Plum’ in the latter half of 2016. Recorded with Cam Smith at Incremental Records (Velociraptor, Deafcult) and mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current Supression Ring, Dick Diver), the release marked a sonic evolution for the band from their first release. Lead single ‘Poverty Line’ followed in the footsteps of ‘Transparency’, with an add to triple j high rotation and satiating the appetites of Aussie youths across the country with its relatable millennial charm.

After touring with Japandroids and ending 2016 in style playing Festival Of The Sun and Falls Festival, Good Boy went from strength to strength in 2017. Stepping out on tour with fellow Brissy rockers The Creases, playing a national sold out tour with Skeggs, and opening for Grinspoon on their 20 Year Anniversary tour of ‘Guide To Better Living’, as well as playing Splendour In The Grass and Yours & Owls festivals, last year saw an impressive expansion to their ever-growing resume.

In 2017 Good Boy also released a split 7 inch with Melbourne wunderkind Jarrow, featuring the trio’s brand new single ‘Braap’. To cap off the year, Good Boy released their latest EP ‘Shirk Life’ through Barely Dressed Records; a poignant look at life an early 20-something year old living in Brisbane in 2017. Weaving elements of humour and politics with the band’s unwavering maturity and millennial sensibilities, ‘Shirk Life’ saw the band release their most affecting record to date.

This year, Good Boy have made some changes. Punters can expect a brassy horn section meandering throughout new tunes, kicking off with surprise track ‘Sodabread’, and latest single ‘CRF’ as well as the introduction of fourth member Marli Smales on bass guitar. NEVERSEA 2019, the biggest festival on the Black Sea shore – NEVERSEA returns to Constanta on July 4-7 2019

After another successful edition last summer, NEVERSEA returns to Constanta, for the third time in a row. The biggest beach festival in Romania will take place from July 4 to 7, 2019. The NEVERSEA story continues next year with the most breathtaking sunsets and most intense sunrises over the Black Sea. Nothing can compete with dancing on the beach to this view, while enjoying unique experiences and the best music out there.

All of this will be accompanied by the most beautiful and energetic crowd. Together with international acclaimed artists, festivalgoers will discover this year’s musical diversity, ranging from commercial superstars to headliners of the underground and everything in between.

NEVERSEA 2018
The 2018 edition was a grand success. During the four days of the festival, over 210,000 visitors, local and from abroad, came to the NEVERSEA beach. More than 150 international artists climbed the seven stages, some familiar faces and some in Romania for the very first time like The Script and Aloe Blacc. Other acts that were met with high anticipation were Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, Lost Frequencies, Axwell & Ingrosso, Steve Angeloand so many more. But also fans of the underground spectrum got their kicks at NEVERSEA 2018 with acts like Nina Kraviz, Âme (dj), Jamie Jones, Acid Pauli, Black Coffee and local heroes Raresh, Priku and Praslea. The NEVERSEA festival welcomed visitors from 95 countries around the globe. Among these countries, most visitors came from the UK, France, Israël, Germany and the United States of America. However, most visitors were local and came from Bucharest and Constanţa, followed by Cluj-Napoca, Ploieşti, Braşov and Timişoara, making the festival crowd a perfect blend, celebrating music in harmony.

London punksters Calva Louise share gripping new single ‘Tug Of War’

London punksters Calva Louise share gripping new single Tug Of War, the third track taken from their debut album Rhinoceros out 1st February.

Laying down a firm marker within London’s raucous punk scene over the last 18 months, the rising trio have since earned support slots alongside the likes of Albert Hammond Jr, Spring King and Anteros and recently finished an extensive UK tour with label-mates The Blinders.

Bursting with ferocity in their trademark anthemic style, Tug Of War encapsulates everything that’s come to be expected of the band. Silky guitar work, biting vocals and infectious, chaotic riffage takes centre stage and only adds to their growing reputation heading into next year’s debut LP release.

Discussing the video, the band stated: “We feel like in any kind of relationship there are unwritten rules everybody should follow, and that becomes a constant tug of war, dealing with unnecessary pressure. If everybody could have a complimentary point of view, then that tug of war could be a fun game where there are no set rules”.

Best known as a collaborator with Bjork, Ed Sheeran and Damon Albarn, World Looping Champion SK Shlomo’s solo debut is partly a drive to address demons that lurked in his past. The first solo song that he’d ever truly opened up on, was the haunting, hypnotic The First Time, a multi-layered, richly-atmospheric recollection of losing his virginity.

Today SK Shlomo presents the visual accompaniment to the track.

He says: “I loved every minute working with director Will Dolan and his team at Firewood Pictures to make my first ever music video – the story they’ve weaved is about being yourself, no matter how painful, and the film just blew me away”.

For a year he visited a vocal coach to help unlearn what beatboxing had taught him. “I had to stop doing some crazy shit with my tongue,” he laughs. “But when I relaxed, a key unlocked and my voice totally changed. In the past, I was always straining, trying to sing high and powerful. Suddenly, it was soft, low and gentle, which is how I speak. I realised it was easy to sound like myself.

‘Surrender’ is SK Shlomo’s intoxicating debut album exploring his struggle with depression and trauma recovery. Richly-atmospheric, blending beatboxing with epic synths and samples, the album journeys through life’s darkest moments and celebrates new beginnings.

Music and culture collide at free Melbourne MPavilion events

This summer, MPavilion located in Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Gardens plays host to a variety of events that see music and culture collide. Melbourne’s diverse music identity is on display in the program with all events free and taking place at the internationally celebrated architectural pavilion designed by Carme Pinós of Barcelona’s Estudio Carme Pinós. The music lineup is a great excuse to visit the pavilion in the warmer weather with a variety of genres, artists and collaborators taking part in events suited to people of all ages. Below is MPavilion’s music highlights.

MMUSIC – Mapping Melbourne presents SA the Collective

Saturday 15 December, 7.30–10.30pm
The artists of SA the Collective create their own soundscapes, exploring all possibilities not bound by time or culture. Their music is a culmination of their Chinese roots, innovative process and sonic exploration. Coming to Melbourne from Singapore as part of Mapping Melbourne 2018, this incredibly special event at MPavilion will be SA the Collective’s only live performance and an occasion not to be missed.

MMUSIC – Australian National Academy of Music presents Golden Gate Brass
Wednesday 19 December, 12-1pm
The esteemed quintet formed in 2017 at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and feature Fletcher Cox, Michael Olsen (trumpet), Aidan Gabriels (horn), Jackson Bankovic (trombone) and Jason Catchpowle (tuba). Bring a picnic rug or relax on MPavilion’s tiered seating and have a midday break with this hour-long performance.

MMUSIC—Bedroom Suck Records presents ‘Music in Exile: Mindy Meng Wang x Sui Zhen’

Australia’s much-loved independent record label presents cross-cultural collaborations from artists who call Melbourne home. In this instalment, classically trained Chinese Australian composer Mindy Meng Wang joins dream-pop singer-songwriter Sui Zhen for a performance not to be missed.

MMUSIC – Polito: A Crimson Audiovisual Landscape

Polito x Visual Display is a collaboration between electronic music duo Robert Downie and Finnian Langham (Polito) and performers Arabella Frahn-Starkie and Hillary Goldsmith (Visual Display). Both parties engage with improvisational scores, responding to each other and their varied surroundings. The outcome is a mesmerising audiovisual landscape.

MMUSIC – Rock Academy XIV performance
Thu 17 Jan 2019, 2-6pm
Rock Academy is a school holiday program that helps develop the skills of teen musicians. Forming bands, they are given guidance by some of Australia’s leading professional musicians, though not a class-based program; they spend all their time rocking at one of Australia’s premier studios: Bakehouse Studios in Richmond. This year, Rock Academy bands are preparing cover songs and co-writing original songs to be performed in front of family and friends at a final performance at MPavilion 2018. They definitely get loud!

MKIDS—Mi Gente (My People) Sound System Party

Sunday 20 January, 3–6pm
A multi-generational sound system party for kids and their adults, this vibrant outdoor dance-off draws its inspiration from city block parties in Latin America and the Caribbean. With young local DJs providing the soundtrack, this is perfect summer entertainment for kids who like to bust a move. Pack a picnic and enjoy coffee and refreshments from our Kiosk.

Establishing herself through collaborations with Deborah Cheetham’s Short Black Opera as well as Jessie Lloyd’s Mission Songs Project, Jessica Hitchcock will perform from her very first EP, due to be released in May 2019.

Nicky Romero, SLVR and EAUXMAR remix Martin Garrix and MIKE YUNG’s ‘Dreamer’

Martin Garrix’s Dreamer collaboration with America’s Got Talent semi-finalist, MIKE YUNG, has proved to be one of the year’s most unexpected collaborations—and a true hit for this unique pairing.

Garrix discovered the 58-year-old singer through Instagram, where he saw a clip of him busking in the metro. He reached out to the man with the spine-tingling voice and the two recorded ‘Dreamer’ in Garrix’s Amsterdam based studio. Now come three new remixes to give the track another lease of life.

Nicky Romero teases us with a stripped-back beginning, sweet 8-bit keys and majestic strings as his remix beings in gentle fashion. Don’t be fooled though: huge, euphoric synths and pounding beats await the patient listeners. He makes the most of the glorious vocals and the rousing gospel singing later in the track.

SLVR delivers a rolling, deep house flavoured version, punctuated by clipped percussion and a gentle shuffle. The tight groove is combined with a pared-back take on the original’s warm chord progression, with intricately chopped-up vocals providing another layer of groove.

EAUXMAR completes the package, leading immediately with the rousing vocal before unfolding a chugging trap-style beat. The brass continues to lift you up on the second drop, making for a highly-inventive, spacious-sounding remix that provides a different flavour from the other mixes and the original.

The resurgent Swedish House Mafia have been announced as guests forFinland’s Weekend Festival 2019 (19-20 July, Helsinki) — only their second show in the country ever.

The trio returned to the headlines with what seemed to be a one-off reunion show at Ultra Festival this year, but have now revealed that they are hitting the road together for a series of dates in 2019. The prospect of new music from them also hangs in the air.

They join an eclectic line-up of electronic, hip-hop and pop artists on the line-up for Weekend Festival, which so far includes the likes of Lil Uzi Vert, Armin Van Buuren, Bastille, Suicideboys, Scarlxrd, Killy, Zomboy, Tungevaag & Raaban,Afrojack, Alan Walker, Dynoro and Headhunterz.

Ticket pre-sales are currently open to Finnish residents, with overseas guests able to purchase from 9AM on 10 December from festicket.com. With news of this huge announcement, tickets are expected to go very quickly, so don’t delay in getting yours.

Held in a stunning urban location in Suvilahti, just minutes away from the city center of Helsinki, Weekend Festival combines high-production outdoor stages with stunning indoor arenas, all tieing into its annual theme. It was previously voted Finland’s best summer festival by listeners to major national radio station YleX, and has received nominations at the European Festival Awards and the Music & Media Industry Awards.

BASEMENT JAXX VS THE METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA – AUSTRALIA 2019 TOUR

Basement Jaxx LIVE on stage, magically re-imagined with a full Orchestra & their legendary singers

 

TEG Dainty and Nice Events are excited to announce that esteemed electronic music duo Basement Jaxx will bring their orchestral live show to Australia in April 2019.

The tour opens up in Melbourne on Saturday 13 April and moves on to Sydney on Sunday 14 April before winding up in Brisbane on Thursday 18 April.

Tickets go on sale at 10am local time on Friday 14 December for the three-city tour.

Felix Buxton & Simon Ratcliffe (better known as Basement Jaxx) are double BRIT and GRAMMY award winning artists who have graced the biggest stages across the world, including: headlining the main stage at Glastonbury Festival, Hyde Park in London and The Hollywood Bowl.

Following on from their ground-breaking 2011 album collaboration with The Metropole Orkest and the now seminal LIVE shows that accompanied it in London & the Netherlands, Basement Jaxx will unveil a new and updated version of the project as they creatively collide LIVE on stage with Sydney’s The Metropolitan Orchestra at the iconic Sydney Opera House, as well as stops in Melbourne & Brisbane.

Comprising magical re-interpretations of all the Basement Jaxx floor-fillers, as well as specially commissioned new work and a few surprises along the way, the show will also feature legendary Jaxx singers Vula & Sharlene Hector on powerhouse vocal duties.

Basement Jaxx are no strangers to Aussie shores and have thrilled audiences over the years with their massive hit records including: ‘Red Alert,’ ‘Rendez-Vu,’ ‘Jump N Shout,’ ‘Bingo Bango,’ ‘Romeo,’ ‘Where’s Your Head At,’ ‘Do Your Thing,’ ‘Good Luck,’ ‘Oh My Gosh,’ ‘Hush Boy’ & many more! They’ve collaborated with the likes of: Robyn, Sam Sparro, Dizzee Rascal and have remixed for the likes of Pet Shop Boys, Daft Punk, Justin Timberlake, Adele, Mary J Blige and more.

Landing in Australia in 2019, these shows promise to be a remarkable re-imagining of one of dance music’s most influential recording artists, in an extraordinary classical & contemporary re-boot of their original LIVE show.
