PURR RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM ‘LIKE NEW’ TODAY WATCH NEW VIDEO FOR “GIANT NIGHT”

by the partae February 21, 2020
written by the partae

“Storybook psych-pop with old school New York charm” – The Fader

Purr’s debut album Like New is a transitional record, full of songs about shedding old patterns and old relationships to make space for what comes next. Out today and produced by Jonathan Rado (Father John Misty, Weyes Blood, Whitney), the sounds of Like New nod, at times, to a place in the past (like your favorite 70’s AM), but they don’t dwell there. Behind its golden sheen, however, lurk stories like the starry, piano-driven “Giant Night”. Named after Anne Waldman’s 1970 book of poems, watch the song’s new black and white performance video below.

Founding band members Jack Staffen and Eliza Callahan say they sing about “the push and pull between recognising the natural end of a relationship while not wanting the patterns of your daily life to change,” in the song’s lyrics. “We were riffing and reflecting on a very simple sentiment: knowing someone so intimately that’s no longer around and not knowing what to do with your empty time that was once spent with that person.”

Like New was written in the band’s basement studio in downtown Manhattan, a repurposed storage space beneath a restaurant in the building where Callahan once lived as a young child—thanks to the goodwill of the very last kind landlord in New York City. After sending around two home recordings produced by Callahan’s classmate, Sam Glick (who has played bass in the band ever since), they were offered a spot opening for Foxygen at Terminal 5, marking their second ever live show. Several months later, Rado produced Like New at his studio in East Los Angeles.

The effects of Americana and Psychedelia on Like New give way to something at once contemporary and classic with Staffen and Callahan’s harmonies, which can eerily forge what sounds like one voice humming at the centre. The band performs as a five piece with Sam Glick on bass, Max Freedberg on drums and Maurice Marion on keys.

PRAISE FOR MAN ALIVE!

“Equal parts beautiful and haunting. It’s these nuances that encapsulate King Krule and make Man Alive! Marshall’s most compelling record to date.” – STACK

“Man Alive!, dials up the cynicism and expands the space around his musings so he can speak more directly about his bleak experiences while tempering them with loping but pretty melodies.” – The Music, ★★★★

“Marshall’s creativity is shining for all the world to see.” – NME, ★★★★

“His most anguished album yet” – Pitchfork, 7.7

King Krule today releases his new album Man Alive! out via XL Recordings / Remote Control Records. See him perform in Australia as a part of Splendour In The Grass this July.

With an animated video created by Jamie Wolfe, who previously collaborated with Archy on a short video for ‘Vidual’, Jamie has also created animations for Gucci and the TV show Rick & Morty.

Archy Ivan Marshall has the world at his feet. After two feverishly received albums as King Krule, plus another low-key outing under his own name, this extraordinarily gifted 25-year-old from Peckham in South London adds further depth and substance to his oeuvre with another wondrous long-player called Man Alive!. It arrives packed full of his trademark sonic ambition and compositional skill, as well as the now-familiar corrosive lyricism and lurid social observation. Marshall has emerged as a pack leader amongst his peers, leading the charge in a fearless blurring of genre divisions, one minute seeming to drag the listener through the trashiest punk experience, the next ushering in a soundworld that’s apparently hi-tech and forward-looking.

Like any great artist on the rise, Archy’s life is moving fast. There’s a lot to catch up on, after 2017’s sprawling masterpiece, The Ooz, broke through amid Mercury Prize nominations and minds-blown media plaudits. Unlike that record, Man Alive! doesn’t aim to present any kind of narrative thread, or Brexit-era state-of-the-nation address, just a collection of snapshots and stories, artfully sequenced into a dazzlingly coherent whole.

This third King Krule album was written as a direct reaction to the non-stop energy of touring The Ooz, and then partly recorded at Shrunken Heads in Marshall’s native stamping ground of Nunhead, with ‘Ooz’ co-producer Dilip Harris. Midway through those sessions, however, Archy found out he was going to become a dad for the first time, and he decided to move up to the North West to be near the mother’s family, ready for the baby’s arrival.

“I should’ve had it all wrapped up before my daughter was born,” says Marshall today with a sheepish grin. Impending parenthood came at a felicitous moment for him, as he was beginning to feel trapped in South London’s suburban lifestyle of all-eclipsing drunkenness and depression, which existing fans will know was a recurring theme in his earlier music.

“It was just the easiness of it,” he reflects today. “There really is nothing else to do here, especially when it turns to winter. Everyone I know has jobs, whereas I’d sit on my arse all day sometimes not doing anything, then I’d go to the pub with them when they finished work. It became a bit habitual. Then, right in the middle of the record, this big change came in my life that I didn’t really comprehend initially. It was like, ‘Oh, I’d better get my shit together!’ To be honest, I was really glad to get away from all that so I could focus on more pressing matters – like keeping a child alive and stuff.”

The new album’s title, he explains, “is an exclamation, about the times we live in. Like, ‘Fucking hell, man!’” He stole the title from a CD that his uncle gave him back in 2013 with some of his uncle’s own music on it, and originally planned to use it for his last album.

“More and more,” he explains, “I’ve been put off by the intention of speaking about what’s going on in society as a black-and-white thing, or trying to get to the bottom of why we’re in this position. So the album is mostly made up of snapshots and observations. There are a lot of real-time-and-place moments, songs talking about walking through the park just over there and getting a head injury [don’t ask! – Ed.], then there are other tracks which are just simplicity, looking at one particular situation and reflecting on it as somehow being super-profound.”

Just as the lyrics are diverse in theme and purpose, so is the music: ‘Comet Face’ lopes along with irresistible unease like a wonky New Wave hit, and ‘Stoned Again’ packs all the inspired beatmongery of ’90s hip hop, while much of the record’s sparser second half recalls the lo-fi intimacy of Robert Wyatt’s ’80s solo work, or indeed the recordings of mass-murderer Charles Manson.

As the concluding ‘Please Complete Thee’ sails out on upliftingly twangsome slide guitar, you’d be forgiven for imagining that some of the more agonizing preceding numbers have served as a kind of therapy for their creator. “Oh yeah,” he freely admits, “once you’re able to discuss things and talk honestly, there is no better way than just shouting it out at a bunch of people. I was always empowered by lyricism and getting my aggression out in some way, or any kind of emotion. That has always been a process for me. This time I felt like I had gotten out of a dark place, and I was on a high. I appreciated the depression, and the low times I’d been through, but I also liked how I felt better in the here and now. So it was about reaching that new plateau.”

Lies is the freshest clubroom anthem coming from heavyweight producer INViDA, with its blending of flamenco guitar lines and driving rhythms. The four-to-the-floor banger features Lauren Mayhew and Kymber McClay, and is ready made for you EDM playlists. You can listen to Lies here. Lauren Mayhew is a singer and DJ, who’s opened for the likes of Britney Spears, Destiny’s Child and Sting at the Superbowl. Romania’s acclaimed UNTOLD festival is back with a bang with its first line-up announcement for its 2020 event, taking place in the Cluj Arena and surrounding Central Park in Cluj-Napoca from 30 July - 2 August. The 9 stage-festival is one of Europe’s most incredible gatherings of electronic music and celebrates its 6th run this summer.  Dance titans Martin Garrix and David Guetta lead the charge with two showstopping DJ sets. The duo have collaborated previously on formidable tracks such as ‘Like I Do’ and ‘So Far Away’. Their return to UNTOLD shows again how this festival keeps on attracting the best talent to come back time and time again.    Big room fans will be pumped for Afrojack, Alesso and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike known for their endless energy. Eric Prydz brings his super-classy euphoric sounds and Steve Aoki and DJ Snake bring the crazy.    Meanwhile the live pop act big hitters begin with the announcement of three sensational names who will perform on the mainstage. One of the most legendary girl groups ever will make their UNTOLD debut, The Pussycat Dolls will definitely be one of the highlights on the 2020 line-up. Also set to debut in Cluj-Napoca is the formidable rapper Iggy Azalea, known for chart-topping tracks such as ‘Fancy’ and ‘Black Widow’. The ever popular Irish band The Script will treat their fans on a show they will never forget, bringing their slew of Platinum-selling hits with them.   The underground is heavily represented on this first announcement too. Trance fans will be pleased to hear of the inclusion of Above & Beyond. The new school of Belgian techno is represented by the fierce sounds of Charlotte de Witte and Amelie Lens. Paul Kalkbrenner, Richie Hawtin and Tale Of Us showing why they’re at the top of their game. The lineup is stacked with quirky bands, fresh, up and coming acts, local talents, curious distractions, mouthwatering food offerings and plenty more surprises that make for non-stop adventure and exploration across the weekend.  Amongst this years headliners are none other than world renowned dance music icons Basement Jaxx, who have been behind too many chart topping hits to mention and always bring a dazzling mix of dance sounds informed by many years at the top of their game. Hip hop lovers are in for a treat when American legends and Grammy award winers Arrested Development and New Yorks finest KRS One take to the stage bringing crisp, booming rap beats as well as conscious and empowering lyrics, while junglists will surely be happy with the combination of old school heavyweights Mickey Finn, Aphrodite, Randall and DJ SS.  Eek A Mouse, David Rodigan, Price Fatty & Horseman head up the reggae authority who will bring the finest riddims, and Mr Scruff has one of the most treasured vinyl collections in the country with everything from soul to funk, downtempo to house. Anyone who has seen Beardyman perform live will know what a spectacle it is as the beatboxer mixes up all genres with his vocal cords and gets any crowd moovin. The ten-year tour features some of these close friends and talented artists gracing the lineups.   The tour commences at the heart of Romania’s underground, Club Guesthouse, on Friday 21 February featuring Alex Troubeztkoy, Vincent Lemieux, Dubtil b2b Dan Andrei and Sammy Dee. Followed directly by another Romanian party on Saturday 22 February at the cultural hub of Visssual in Brasov with Brad, Alex Troubeztkoy, Dan Andrei and Sammy Dee. Moving across Europe, Toi.Toi. is set to join forces with the Anexo brand, with a yet to be released lineup on Saturday 28 March at a Lisbon Warehouse. Then Toi.Toi. return to London where it all began on Easter Bank Holiday Sunday 12 April, this time at FOLD. Featuring at the 24-hour Canning Town venue will be Rhadoo, Vlada, Edward, Dubtil and Junki Inoue, before rolling into an intimate after-hours at pub venue The Lion & Lamb. Friday 19 June concludes the first half of the tour with the ten-year birthday party taking place during none other than BCN OFF week, where Toi.Toi. held their first-ever European venture in 2011. Expect a remarkable lineup of special guests and label affiliates to mark the occasion. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?  I'm Currently Based in Brisbane! The Music Scene here I feel is divided and nobody really works outside of their cliques. How did you first start playing music?  I started getting into it when I was 12-14 and started recording properly when I was 16 What's been happening since the release of your album last year?  Since then I've been putting in work for a Music Video that I had just released, putting in work for other artists Music Videos, I started a Band called Trashmouth and we're opening for Crazy Town (Butterfly) on the 22nd of Feb. Your new video for single 'Heard About Me' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?  I didn't have a direct influence, I was wanting to do a song with Say TrueGod? as our first collab together was done over 7 years ago, I heard this beat and it fit what I felt needed to be done. How did you go about writing Heard About Me?  As above, I then wrote the hook out of inspiration through hearing the beat, I then wrote a Verse to match and hit up Say TrueGod? to come into the studio to record his part. Where and when did you record/produce and who with?  This song and even my entire album was produced by Brandon James (Mixedbybrandon) at our Studio - Black Ace Studios. How did you approach the recording process?  At first I wasn't even sure how I was going to complete the song, I had started working on the video concept with the third verse empty, Freewyo I had been working with previously for his own Music Videos and we gained a friendship through that, I then realised that he was the missing puzzle to this track. How did the concept for the video come about?  I had sat down with Neil Noble and worked out this concept over a few months, trialing ideas back and fourth until we decided on this one. Where and when did you film?  We filmed this in June of 2019 and we filmed this on the Gold Coast. How did the editing process take place?  After everyone had been paid the editing process began over 1-2 months with Neil Noble with a few drafts and then I threw in my own colour grade/transitions to complete it. Is the end result as you expected it to be?  It turned out well! After a few back and fourths with the draft and then adding my own final touches. Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

I’m Currently Based in Brisbane! The Music Scene here I feel is divided and nobody really works outside of their cliques.

How did you first start playing music?

I started getting into it when I was 12-14 and started recording properly when I was 16

What’s been happening since the release of your album last year?

Since then I’ve been putting in work for a Music Video that I had just released, putting in work for other artists Music Videos, I started a Band called Trashmouth and we’re opening for Crazy Town (Butterfly) on the 22nd of Feb.

Your new video for single ‘Heard About Me’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?

I didn’t have a direct influence, I was wanting to do a song with Say TrueGod? as our first collab together was done over 7 years ago, I heard this beat and it fit what I felt needed to be done.

How did you go about writing Heard About Me?

As above, I then wrote the hook out of inspiration through hearing the beat, I then wrote a Verse to match and hit up Say TrueGod? to come into the studio to record his part.

Where and when did you record/produce and who with?

This song and even my entire album was produced by Brandon James (Mixedbybrandon) at our Studio – Black Ace Studios.

How did you approach the recording process?

At first I wasn’t even sure how I was going to complete the song, I had started working on the video concept with the third verse empty, Freewyo I had been working with previously for his own Music Videos and we gained a friendship through that, I then realised that he was the missing puzzle to this track.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Blessed, Anfa Rose, G-Eazy, Eminem, Joynar Lucas, Ursa 13, NF, Stormzy, The Weeknd, Post Malone, Yelawolf, Horrorshow, Mike Shinoda (From Linkin Park) and the list goes on.

What do you like to do away from music?

Aside from Music I’ve got my hands involved with producing Music Videos or Photography for people, I enjoy that aspect of things also!

What’s planned for 2020?

More Music, More Videos, More shows.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Nothing like hanging out at home with the homies with a few beers/smoke acompanied by some good munchies that I prefer to cook myself.

Vancouver, Canada, February 19th, 2020 – Canadian country artist Lisa Nicole is proud to share her newest single and music video “Wait on Me”, which is newly available on all digital platforms and was released to Canadian radio on February 10th. “Wait on Me” – written in Nashville by Lisa Nicole, Jason Thomas, and Dave Pahanish – is the debut single from her 2020 fall album, Where the Wild Hearts Beat, and her first collaboration with CCMA award-winning producer Jeff Johnson. Cliff Hokanson directed the accompanying music video, which was released on February 5th.  This is the first single for the Canadian singer – originally from Castlegar, British Columbia – since she moved to Nashville for the spring and summer of 2018 to add fuel to her creative fire.   Lisa Nicole says, “There are moments in life that test the balance of our commitment between professional goals and personal relationships. While there is great pressure to choose one over the other, I don’t believe it has to be that way. Your heart can want – and have – both. ‘Wait on Me’ is about making the bold choice to follow through on your dreams, but also build a future with someone you love anywhere and anytime – regardless of obstacles.”  The move to Music City connected Lisa Nicole and her longtime guitar player Thomas with Nashville hitmaker Pahanish (Keith Urban, Toby Keith). Her long-distance relationship with a Canadian partner back home proved to be the catalyst that inspired the trio to pen “Wait on Me”. The choice to uproot from the Kootenays to Nashville was greatly inspired by a transformative and serendipitous 2017 moment for Lisa Nicole – winner of the 2015 Music BC/BC Country Music Association Artist Development Project – when she visited Nashville for a songwriting trip. Encouraged to see a pop-up concert by Keith Urban, she arrived with her 2016 EP in hand, only to end up on stage by night’s end to sing an impromptu duet of “We Were Us” with the superstar.     Following her extended stay in Nashville in 2018, Lisa Nicole returned to Canada with heaps of inspiration and a wealth of new material. Since then, she has joined forces with producer Jeff Johnson (Meghan Patrick, Chris Buck Band) to record her first full-length album, Where the Wild Hearts Beat – boasting a commercial country sound with an infusion of rock and pop. “Wait on Me” is the first gift from this collaboration. The album will drop this fall. “Wait on Me” is available on all digital platforms. Lisa Nicole will support “Wait on Me” with a Canadian radio and media tour along with select shows.
