Image: Sam Wong With breakneck anticipation mounting for details on their sophomore album release, Ocean Grove have finally let loose that Flip Phone Fantasy will drop on Friday March 13. The band are also offering another taste off the record with new track 'THOUSAND GOLDEN PEOPLE' out today. The reveal adds to the melting pot of flavours already lifted in the form of 'ASK FOR THE ANTHEM', 'SUNNY', 'JUNKIE$' and 'NEO'. Ocean Grove frontman Dale Tanner explains the album was purposefully crafted to pivot between genres and influences, much like a classic mixtape of the flip phone era.  “Rather than an album that streamlines in one direction of genre, 'Flip Phone Fantasy' has the capacity to be someone’s very own mixtape from start to finish," he says. “This record is the first of its kind, in that its sheer diversity will appeal to music listeners from all corners of the globe.” Between the blistering chaos of opener ‘SUPERSTAR’, through to the dreamy haze of closer ‘FREAKS’, Flip Phone Fantasy ploughs through a thoughtfully complex series of moods and bends, refusing to sit still long enough to be categorised into anything other than pure "Oddworld" music. Whipped and beaten to life over the better part of two years, Ocean Grove – comprising Tanner, bassist Twiggy Hunter, drummer Sam Bassal and guitarist Matt Henley –were determined to see the vision for their second album become fully realised, meticulously self-producing every creative facet they would output.  Following the breakout success of their 2017 debut The Rhapsody Tapes, Flip Phone Fantasy is undoubtedly yet another defining moment for a band not afraid to harness the weird and wonderful aspects of themselves and the world they inhabit.  “The songs on the album have somewhat of a metaphorical undertone for the futuristic mirror image we hoped to embody by the end of the process. With breakneck anticipation mounting for details on their sophomore album release, Ocean Grove have finally let loose that Flip Phone Fantasy will drop on Friday March 13. The band are also offering another taste off the record with new track ‘THOUSAND GOLDEN PEOPLE‘ out today.

Byron Bay-based indie-rock quartet SEASIDE have just unveiled their dreamy and dark new single ‘Shame’ – produced by the band themselves and mixed by Paul Pilsneniks (The Mars Volta, Boy & Bear, Silverchair). 

‘Shame’ is a melancholic slice of lively post-punk that combines themes of dream-pop, garage-rock and shoegaze. Opening with reverb-soaked guitars, steadfast drums and fuzz-laden bass, the track maintains an unwavering and washed-out dynamic; a fitting foundation for the hypnotic melodies of front woman Darcy Dexter.

Dexter describes the motivation behind ‘Shame’:

“’Shame’ is about the people in power not listening to what we really need as a society, turning a blind eye when we need them most. It is a message that if we stand together, we are able to create a positive change”.

Previous singles have been widely embraced by the likes of Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, 3RRR, PBS FM, 4ZZZ, 2XX FM, Bay FM and Edge Radio.

The tracks have also received strong support from tastemaker outlets Pilerats, Life Without Andy, The Revue (CAN) and Indie Obsessive (USA), and Spotify via their playlist’s New Music Friday (USA) and (AU/NZ), Front Left, Chilled Afternoon, Brekkie Time, The Office Stereo, Low Key Weekend, Australian Viral 50, Indie Arrivals and Gegen den Strom.

In the live arena, the group have toured Australia multiple times, selling out headline shows and sharing stages with Last Dinosaurs, Angus and Julia Stone, The Jungle Giants and Lime Cordiale, and also performing at mainstay festivals Splendour in the Grass, Party in the Paddock, Summersalt Festival, BIGSOUND Festival and Grampians.

In the coming weeks SEASIDE will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Shame’.

New additions include David Guetta’s underground alias Jack Back making his North American festival debut following the project’s 2018 relaunch, Ultra’s first proper hardstyle booking of Belgian powerhouse producer Coone, chart-topping, party-starter beatmaker Baauer, indie-electronic sound sculptor TOKiMONSTA, and singer-songwriter-producer triple-threat CRAY. Both Revealed Recordings and A State Of Trance will be celebrating major decade milestones, with Revealed hitting its ten-year mark since the label launched, and A State Of Trance returning to the festival for its tenth consecutive Ultra showcase. Friday night will see ten Revealed Recordings artists playing back-to-back for a massive closing performance, and Saturday evening will be rounded out with a special collaborative set from a myriad of ASOT flag-bearers. In addition to these new artist announcements, Ultra has also unveiled the day-by-day lineup for the festival’s six stages. The Ultra Main Stage is stacked with genre-crossing performances that range from the hard-hitting sounds of Martin Garrix and Afrojack, and trance offerings from Above & Beyond and Armin van Buuren, to sunset sets from Kygo and FISHER, and house stylings from Tchami and Oliver Heldens, capped off by stadium-smashing closing shows from Major Lazer, DJ Snake and David Guetta, respectively. The Live Stage will play host to a plethora of dynamic performances, including Grammy award-winning Flume making his Ultra debut while he closes out the entire festival with an avant-garde showcase of drums, synths and a myriad of other instruments. Revered prince of darkness Gesaffelstein will close out the stage on Saturday, marking his first Miami performance since debuting his Vantablack VBx2 live show this spring which creates an illusion of infinite depth and blackness. Friday evening will be rounded out by Zedd presents The Orbit, which will see the three-time Grammy award-winner perform on an LED-backed orbiting structure that revolves on all sides of the producer. The Ultra Worldwide Stage will kick off on Friday with a bass-in-your-face run of programming, featuring Jauz B2B NGHTMRE, Snails B2B Kill The Noise, Borgore, and more. Saturday’s ASOT showcase will celebrate a decade at the festival with sets from artists like Gareth Emery, in his first ASOT appearance since 2013, Tritonal, in their first ASOT appearance since 2013, Andrew Rayel, Aly & Fila, Ilan Bluestone and many more of Armin van Buuren’s trance cohorts. Sunday will see Malaa and DJ Snake close the festival with their first announced B2B of 2020, as well as sets from SLANDER B2B Kayzo, Space Jesus, Andy C and more. The UMF Radio Stage will host three impressive label takeovers; Friday belongs to Revealed Recordings and will feature sets from Maddix, Deorro, and Mike Williams B2B Surprise Guest, Saturday will see STMPD RCRDS artists including Lost Frequencies, Matisse & Sadko B2B DubVision, and a surprise closing performance. While Sunday’s inaugural Gud Vibrations stage takeover will feature sets from Baauer, Subtronics, Peekaboo, 1788-L and many more. Carl Cox has been curating his own stage at Ultra Music Festival since 2005, and this year his iconic RESISTANCE MegaStructure will expand to take place over all three days of the festival for the first time ever at Bayfront Park. Each night, Carl Cox will close out the festivities; on Friday as a B2B with Maceo Plex, on Saturday as a B3B alongside Jamie Jones and The Martinez Brothers, and on Sunday as a solo performance. New additions include David Guetta’s underground alias Jack Back making his North American festival debut following the project’s 2018 relaunch, Ultra’s first proper hardstyle booking of Belgian powerhouse producer Coone, chart-topping, party-starter beatmaker Baauer, indie-electronic sound sculptor TOKiMONSTA, and singer-songwriter-producer triple-threat CRAY.

Both Revealed Recordings and A State Of Trance will be celebrating major decade milestones, with Revealed hitting its ten-year mark since the label launched, and A State Of Trance returning to the festival for its tenth consecutive Ultra showcase. Friday night will see ten Revealed Recordings artists playing back-to-back for a massive closing performance, and Saturday evening will be rounded out with a special collaborative set from a myriad of ASOT flag-bearers.

In addition to these new artist announcements, Ultra has also unveiled the day-by-day lineup for the festival’s six stages. The Ultra Main Stage is stacked with genre-crossing performances that range from the hard-hitting sounds of Martin Garrix and Afrojack, and trance offerings from Above & Beyond and Armin van Buuren, to sunset sets from Kygo and FISHER, and house stylings from Tchami and Oliver Heldens, capped off by stadium-smashing closing shows from Major Lazer, DJ Snake and David Guetta, respectively.

The Live Stage will play host to a plethora of dynamic performances, including Grammy award-winning Flume making his Ultra debut while he closes out the entire festival with an avant-garde showcase of drums, synths and a myriad of other instruments. Revered prince of darkness Gesaffelstein will close out the stage on Saturday, marking his first Miami performance since debuting his Vantablack VBx2 live show this spring which creates an illusion of infinite depth and blackness. Friday evening will be rounded out by Zedd presents The Orbit, which will see the three-time Grammy award-winner perform on an LED-backed orbiting structure that revolves on all sides of the producer.

The Ultra Worldwide Stage will kick off on Friday with a bass-in-your-face run of programming, featuring Jauz B2B NGHTMRE, Snails B2B Kill The Noise, Borgore, and more. Saturday’s ASOT showcase will celebrate a decade at the festival with sets from artists like Gareth Emery, in his first ASOT appearance since 2013, Tritonal, in their first ASOT appearance since 2013, Andrew Rayel, Aly & Fila, Ilan Bluestone and many more of Armin van Buuren’s trance cohorts. Sunday will see Malaa and DJ Snake close the festival with their first announced B2B of 2020, as well as sets from SLANDER B2B Kayzo, Space Jesus, Andy C and more.

The UMF Radio Stage will host three impressive label takeovers; Friday belongs to Revealed Recordings and will feature sets from Maddix, Deorro, and Mike Williams B2B Surprise Guest, Saturday will see STMPD RCRDS artists including Lost Frequencies, Matisse & Sadko B2B DubVision, and a surprise closing performance. While Sunday’s inaugural Gud Vibrations stage takeover will feature sets from Baauer, Subtronics, Peekaboo, 1788-L and many more.

Carl Cox has been curating his own stage at Ultra Music Festival since 2005, and this year his iconic RESISTANCE MegaStructure will expand to take place over all three days of the festival for the first time ever at Bayfront Park. Each night, Carl Cox will close out the festivities; on Friday as a B2B with Maceo Plex, on Saturday as a B3B alongside Jamie Jones and The Martinez Brothers, and on Sunday as a solo performance. Techno and house heavyweights including Richie Hawtin, Tale of Us, Adam Beyer ◻︎ Cirez D, Loco Dice, and Amelie Lens, who will be making her Ultra Music Festival debut, are only a few of many names that comprise the MegaStructure’s massive lineup.

RESISTANCE will also present a brand-new stage dubbed “The Cove” because of its unique waterfront positioning with Biscayne Bay to the east and Biscayne Boulevard to the west. This new stage, nestled perfectly under the palm trees in the heart of Downtown Miami, will capture the vibe and spirit of Resistance Island, and feature performances from the likes of Solardo, Pan-Pot, ARTBAT, CamelPhat, Reinier Zonneveld (LIVE) and Matador.

What is your name and role within Fer Sher?  Benji: Guitar, production Ali: Vocals, lyrics, melodies, artwork Oscar: Bass Chris: Drums Yamin: Guitar  Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? We all live in and around Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). The music community here is great, you can find anything you’d possibly like if you look hard enough. There are also a decent amount of smaller venues and diy spots which really support newer artists like ourselves. We are also lucky to have a sizable French music scene that comes with its unique flavour, too. We feel quite fortunate to have our city in which to start a musical journey.  How did Fer Sher form?  Yamin, 26 at the time, had never been in a band. He and Aaron started writing guitar parts and were shortly joined by Jer on drums, both of whom had had touring and recording experience. The band was slowly pieced together with friends (but to us, also musical giants) coming and going (Aaron and Jer left amicably) for several years, during which time the conceptual foundations of what our sound was to be like were laid. Eventually everyone in the band was on the same page and we began recording thanks to Benji’s production wizardry and performing thanks to a finally solidified lineup.  What's been happening recently?  We have written quite a long debut double-EP, “Family”, clocking in at about 30 minutes to be released in two halves this spring. From there we are excited to hit the road this summer and work on a full-length.  You have a new EP 'Step Siblings' coming out on Feb 26, what influenced the sound and songwriting?  Compositionally, one of the three songs, Shteve, was written over the course of several years and was a painstaking first attempt at finding ways to express catchiness and complexity simultaneously. The second song, Fork, was written mostly by Yamin but with crucial contributions by Benji, while the third song, Locked Drawers, saw an inverse in that Benji brought the main gist and Yamin added his  thoughts to it. So in the ways that the songs were created, they are very much like step siblings.  What influenced our sound the most was our attempt to emulate our favourite motifs and sounds, exploring musical and collaborative possibilities, and really trying to put as much of our vulnerable selves into the music and accompanying facets (production, artwork, merch, etc) as possible.  Vocally and lyrically, it’s a whole other story. When Ali arrived in early 2019 she brought with her conceptual, storytelling, and performance capacities that really shaped the music into the product it’s become. Our live shows took on theatrical and immersive components as Ali grew into her role as a singer without an instrument to hold (a first for her).  Please tell us about the stories, concepts and themes behind Step Siblings:  The lyrics each represent a character and a story that form the basis of the three songs. The storytelling is vague and non-linear because the lyrics follow that nagging train of thought that continually reflects back on events and tries to place them into a broader context. There’s the struggling friend who continually lies to everyone in a desperate attempt at self preservation, the victim of online stalking and abuse who becomes paralyzed in their day to day life and the artist struggling to toe the line between perfectionism and free expression. Every story, after exhaustive analysis, ends back up at the absurdity of interpersonal existence and the human condition. Because what story ever doesn’t?  How did you go about writing the music?  Guitars are really the driving force behind the song compositions at the moment. At the moment, there is a large emphasis on progression within songs. We really ask ourselves, “where is the song going?”. Yamin really frankenstein's different parts together; all songs on the double-EP have tempo and time signature changes, nothing too technical but equally present throughout. Benji thinks more of cohesion with regards to mood and atmosphere between parts, and Chris confronts the challenge of when to groove and when to provide angularity. Bass is filled in next before Ali weaves her way through all-but completed tracks.  Where and when did you record/produce and who with?  All our material to date has been produced by our guitarist Ben, who actively records bands of all kinds in our area. Step Siblings was recorded throughout late 2019.  How did you approach the recording process?  Benji takes a natural and honest approach. There is no pitch correction on vocals or drum samples used in our music. It’s more fun to hear the breath of a singer or the scrape on guitar strings than to have something flawless.  What do you find most rewarding and challenging with the whole DIY approach?  The most challenging is the unpaid work. Benji and Ali work tirelessly with no compensation. The most rewarding is the pride and sense of accomplishment that come with having the entirety of a band created in-house. It takes our project beyond a conventional band and into the realm of art rock DIY  The band has a really theatrical live show that is a spectacle of its own, please tell us how your live started and has evolved:  The band was never intended to be more than a math-rock group, and we played with that mentality before Ali arrived. Having the stage on which to develop characters, crowd interaction, and pure focus on the singing without playing anything else opened up a door to the performance no one saw coming. We are now trying to evolve into a truly ensconcing experience, in which we hope that the meticulousness of the songwriting adequately backdrops the on-stage hijinks in a balanced and comprehensive concert-going adventure.  How do you prepare for live shows?  We try to meet as much as possible, which can be very difficult. Things outside the band in our lives are very hectic - engagement (!!!), immigration issues, full-time university studies, recording other local bands, beginning a career in architecture, and making time for our beloved friends and families are just some of the other things on our plates.  You also have a second EP 'Identical Triplets' coming out, please tell us more:  We had 6 songs ready to record when we planned these releases. With a closer look, the first three sounded really different from each other while the other three were pretty much the same idea expressed three different ways. This instantiated the concept of different family makeups, biological, adopted, chosen, etc., and really spoke to our appreciation for and celebration of our families. Identical Triplets became a conceptual opposite to Step Siblings and we are recording it as we speak.  Who are you listening to at the moment?  Yamin: Invalids Oscar: Mil-Spec Ben: Young Guv Ali: Cate Le Bon Chris: Circa Survive  What do you like to do away from music?  We all have varied hobbies. Oscar loves gaming and collecting vinyl, Ben’s always fixing up a guitar, amp or pedal. Yamin studies full-time, volunteers, and tries to prioritize his health. Ali likes crafting and cooking and playing outside. Chris likes watching animes & eating ramens whenever possible  What's planned for 2020?  More music, more shows, and more ramen for Chris  Favourite food and place to hangout?  You can find us at the tiny local vietnamese restaurant, Pho Ici in Rosemont area of Montreal enjoying excellent banh mi, lovely pho, and/or our favourite beverage; taro bubble tea. Everything on the menu there is exquisite, the staff is so warm and inviting, and the tarot bubble tea puts all others to shame. It’s right next to our rehearsal space so many a meal and drink have been enjoyed there. 10/10 highly recommend.

Having just wrapped up their sold-out UK tour, Gengahr are gearing up to kick off their Australian and New Zealand tour next month. With the tour just weeks away, Gengahr today have announced that special guests Green Buzzard will join them in Sydney, with Merpire sharing the stage in Melbourne.

Green Buzzard is the solo project of Sydney musician Paddy Harrowsmith. Across two EPs –  2016’s Eazy, Queezy, Squeezy and 2017’s Space Man Rodeo – and his debut 2019 record Admist the Clutter & Mess, Green Buzzard has melded hooky melodies, fuzzed-out guitars, soaring lead lines and propulsive, almost drum-machine like beats into a sound all his own.

From emotional rollercoasters to fully immersive, indie-rock arrangements, Merpire is the musical brainchild of Riannon Atkinson-Howatt. Conjuring magical moments in both the studio and on stage, Merpire and her predominantly female line-up have supported the likes of Julia Jacklin, Last Dinosaurs, Angie McMahon and Didirri, and entranced crowds at Bigsound, A Festival Called PANAMA and By The Meadow. Merpire will release the next single from her debut album, ‘Heavy Feeling’, this Friday (27 February).

Gengahr released their third full-length album Sanctuary last month. The album was hailed by music press, with triple j choosing it as their Feature Album, Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1 making it his Album For The Weekend, and BBC 6Music featuring it as their Album Of The Day. Amongst these many accolades, Danny Ward from Gengahr has been crowned as having the Sexiest/Smoothest Voice from Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1’s The Saunders Awards.

Sanctuary features the single ‘Heavenly Maybe’, which is on rotation at triple j, is A-listed at BBC 6 Music, playlisted at BBC Radio 1, and was Greg James’ Tune Of The Week on Radio 1’s Breakfast Show. DIY called the track “a pleasing slice of indie-pop”; and Clash “an ultra-infectious new synth jammer”. The single reached #28 in Spotify’s UK Viral Chart.

Hot from releasing their booming latest single, ‘Explode Into View,’ Perth outfit Sly Withers have released a brand-new video for the track featuring behind-the-scenes studio footage of them recording the mighty new song.

‘Explode Into View’ has been heralded for taking the high bar the Perth four-piece set for themselves in 2019 and shattering it with an emotional blast, thanks to the stadium-sized production of the new cut. The new video, made with regular collaborator Tim Elphick (director of their previous videos for ‘Sad Guy’ and ‘Good Days, Bad Days’), captures footage from the studio sessions for the recording of the new single, highlighting how the band continue to approach making records the same as they always have – a bunch of mates loving to make music together – despite their exponentially growing audience and reputation.

Sly Withers’ career momentum only seemed to gather speed throughout the last 12 months, following the release of their breakout EP, Gravis, and particularly its killer single ‘Lately’ feat. Carla Geneve, their first release on stalwart indie label Dew Process. Sold out national tours, festival appearances and supports slots with rock and pop power houses alike – from Slowly Slowly to Amy Shark and Tones & I – has seen them capitalise on their high profile with the announcement they’ll appear on the bill at Splendour In The Grass for the first time this July.

Despite all that success, nothing for Sly Withers has changed on an elemental level. The same four members – Jono Mata (guitar / vox), Sam Blitvich (guitar / vox), Joel Neubecker (drums) and Shea Moriarty (bass) – using the same producer as Gravis (Matthew Templeman at his studio in Mount Hawthorn), they now have pulsating self-belief that can only be built on the back of hard work and a brotherhood forged in the trenches. The result is a towering new sound that is much, much greater than the sum of its parts, yet reflects the depth of the emotional core of the band and the love they share for the music they make together.

Speaking about ‘Explode Into View,’ Mata says, “”When I wrote this song I was on the brink of an exciting new relationship which, by no fault of either party, never came to fruition. Some things just aren’t meant to be, and sometimes irrational thinking gets the better of us. The song is about moving on with the feeling that things will never be as good as we imagined, that we seek closure we’ll never get, and how weeks, months and years down the track, a chance run-in or out of the blue text can send us spiralling out of logical thinking and right back to where we started. ‘Explode Into View’ is about finding moments of clarity in times of confusion.”

One is a conscious response to a set of circumstances, the other is the unconscious conditions of our very being that only occasionally surfaces through feelings. Hurts To Laugh excavates this ambiguous site, implied by its very title. Barrelling out of the illustrious rock n’ roll crucible of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Tshitaki are an unrelenting assault of choppy guitars offering up a groundswell of in-your-face, turbo charged surf rock. As the band gear up for their album launch in March and get set to take their turbocharged rock n’ roll on an extensive tour to push their baby out in to the big wide world, with World Keeps Turning to be available on all major streaming and downloading platforms, as well as a super limited release of 150 individually numbered vinyl pressings.

Keeping it to the bare essentials as a three piece, Tshitaki distil fuzz guitars over a tightly wound rhythm section creating a searing assault on your more genteel senses, divining their own unique brand of musical alchemy.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I live in Los Angeles, CA. The music scene is wide and varied, but is a surprisingly small world. I’m always meeting musicians that know friends of mine or have played music with them. There is a lot of music to be heard on any given night and that is an exciting thing to be around. How did you first start playing music? There was a family heirloom upright piano in my house growing up. I started playing around with that as a child. I would sit and figure out melodies of songs I heard my parents listening to, and come up with my own ideas. Later, I started learning saxophone in school and by my teenage years, picked up the guitar and quickly got very serious about it.  What been happening recently? I'm consistently working on new music for Missives, collaborative projects, and instrumental music. Looking forward to releasing my debut single Dissolve. Your new single 'Dissolve' is about to be released from your debut EP, what influenced the sound and songwriting for Dissolve and the EP? My influences span quite a far and wide spectrum. Since I first heard "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich, the idea of repetitive musical figures changing over time or staying constant while everything changes around them has been an important part of how I hear musical ideas. Moving harmony versus static figures, textures, and atmosphere inform a lot of my sound. My music is an amalgam of that minimalist influence and inspiration from artists like FKA Twigs, Thom Yorke, James Blake, and Bjork. The songwriting revolves around concepts of discovery, transformation, loss, acceptance, and the passage of time.  How did you go about writing Dissolve? I had recently bought a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08 synth. I was exploring the sounds it was capable of and stumbled into a bass line that felt like it was falling over itself. It turned into a fully realized song shortly after that once I added a beat, some synth pads for harmony and a vocal melody. Lyrically, the song is about experiencing loss and navigating the disorientation that comes along with it.  Where and when did you record and who with? Dissolve and the other tracks on “Patterns of Us” (EP) were recorded in my studio over the course of the last couple years. I've worked as a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist for years now and wrote, recorded, and mixed everything myself. I have two tracks with guest vocalists, very close friends of mine, Patrick Joseph and Eleanor Crane. I’m lucky to have close friends who are also incredibly talented artists in their own right.  How did you approach the recording process? Recording and writing happen simultaneously. Today Australian raised, Canadian based producer Jay Cooper releases his debut EP INTERIM, a concept project about navigating the city as an artist, building and destroying to forge the new. Listen HERE.

Of the EP Cooper says “The concept of INTERIM is navigating a building, one that’s constantly shifting and changing as you move. It’s like urban life, trying to scale this structure and forge a path for yourself.  It’s up to you who you trust and how you move through the levels. It’s a recurring dream I have where I’m in some kind of living & breathing building that’s endless, and everybody I know is in there somewhere.
