Hagen explains, "Montage Music is a meditation on the way capitalism takes beautiful cycles of birth, death and rebirth and makes them ugly by making future regenerations impossible. The song uses a car as the primary symbol for this as it exemplifies the unsustainable, though sometimes intoxicating, aspect of modern life. The narrator becomes fully engrossed in the vanities and demands of this life, and only at the end of the song notices a cloud of burning black smoke rising from tea being made without water, now impossible not to notice.”  ‘Montage Music’ is from Vundabar's upcoming album, Either Light, out March 13th, 2020 on their own Gawk Records, and was released alongside a lyric video created by the band. It follows earlier singles ‘Petty Crime’ and ‘Burned Off’, which won praise from Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, NYLON, Under the Radar and more. Either Light is Vundabar’s fourth album, and their first with producer Patrick Hyland (Mitski). It is available for pre-order.   Either Light follows Vundabar's critically acclaimed 2018 album Smell Smoke. The record received critical praise across the board, including Pitchfork ("a winning, cathartic album"), NPR ("spiky, caustic, fundamentally good-natured rock & roll"), Stereogum, FADER, Consequence of Sound, Paste, VICE, SPIN, Uproxx and more.    Vundabar will kick off their North America headline tour in March. On the road they will be joined by a rotating cast of support including Great Grandpa, Boyscott, Ohmme, The Ophelias, Destroy Boys, Boyo and Dehd.    For all press enquiries, please contact: katie@someonegreatpr.com Bio:    Vundabar is a great guitar band. In an age where critics argue endlessly over whether or not the guitar is dead, the Boston band could clearly care less. Trends be damned, Vundabar continue to play and be who they are. Along the way they’ve sold out 1000+ cap rooms across the country, self-released and sold thousands of their records, and built a dedicated fan base for their quirky indie pop that follows them wherever they go.   In March, Vundabar will release their fourth album, Either Light, on their own Gawk Records. “The album is about the transitional lightness that follows a period of heaviness” singer/guitarist Brandon Hagen explains, “After years of being caught up in a dark period marked by sickness, strife and worry, and using it as the context in which I saw myself, I suddenly found I'd outgrown that story. With that came a feeling of lightness that was opposite the feeling which preceded it.” The album’s title refers to that duality - “light” is used as a descriptor for the weight of feeling, the quality of illumination that frames that feeling and the spectrum that spans both.   The songs themselves contain numerous symbols that are key to understanding the album’s central theme. There is an acknowledgement of awful circumstances, an acceptance of them, and the decision to move forward regardless. It’s a universal trope that rings especially true at this point in history.    Cars, water and even Tony Soprano feature in the lyrics, each imbued with their own meaning relevant to Either Light’s themes. The paradox of being willfully doomed, which is arguable uniquely American, is embodied in Tony Soprano. Cars and driving appear continually in the lyrics, as songwriter Brandon Hagen explores the idea of being along for the ride, where the passenger isn’t necessarily in control. While writing the record, Hagen went swimming each day in a lake by his home. He was often struck by the relationship between light and water - how water divorces light from its source. The mysterious nature of refracted light and the sense of confusion it causes plays into the themes of the album as well as begs the question - from where and what?   For Either Light, Vundabar worked with producer Patrick Hyland (producer for Mitski's Be the Cowboy, Puberty 2, Bury Me at Makeout Creek). It makes the first time they have ever had someone produce one of their albums. Their original bass player, Zackery Abramo, re-joined the group to play on the record, and Emily Massey from Slow Pulp contributed backing vocals. While in the past Vundabar’s recording process has always been very self contained, this album is notable for having had more people collaborating than ever before. Recorded at Gradwell House and Retro City Studios, Vundabar came in with the song skeletons and built out the arrangements in the studio. The difference is apparent and there are a host of new sounds on Either Light, including a sequencer, vibraphone, synth, drum machines, and more layered vocals than ever before.

THE DARKROOM'S MAX LEONE SHARES NEW SINGLE 'CAUTIOUS'

THE DARKROOM’S MAX LEONE SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘CAUTIOUS’

by the partae February 28, 2020
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR MAX LEONE

“burgeoning pop star”
Billboard“a thrilling sign of things to come from this up-and-coming artist”
Earmilk

“smooth vocals and sticky melodies”
Paper

“gooey and dark but also incredibly catchy”
Alt Citizen

Today, rising 20-year-old songwriter-producer Max Leone shares his second single ‘Cautious’ via Darkroom Records. Following on from his debut release, ‘First Grade,’ ‘Cautious’ is the latest track to be lifted from his forthcoming EP which premiered on triple j’s ‘Good Nights with Bridget Hustwaite‘ and Billboard. The track also comes with a video, directed and edited by Clyde Munroe in collaboration with Max Leone. Listen HERE, watch HERE.

Of the track, Max says: “Cautious is about isolating yourself from the world in an attempt to protect yourself from it, but ultimately discovering that the beauty and meaning in life is often derived through its discomfort.”

Picking up the guitar at age 7, Portland-born Leone quickly developed a passion for playing and began experimenting with violin, drums, and piano as well. Countless after school hours spent practicing, composing, playing in jazz bands, learning production via YouTube and pumping out remixes on Soundcloud eventually led Max to attend the prestigious Berklee College Of Music as a guitar principal. After his freshman year, however, Max dropped out to pursue music full time, making the cross-country move to Los Angeles.

Written entirely in the wake of his move, Max’s debut EP tells his story of attempting to navigate a new city alone while chasing a potentially far-fetched dream. Threaded through with all the tenuous emotionality that comes with this kind of upheaval, it explores themes of self-doubt, nostalgia, social media and isolation.

Inspired by childhood influences and all-time greats such as Frank Ocean, Nina Simone, and John Mayer, Leone’s music is defined by the combination of soulful, acoustic-led songwriting with the left-of-center production choices of King Princess and BENEE, as well as the DIY pop intelligence of Omar Apollo and Bakar. Max’s unique blend of songwriting is once again on full display throughout ‘Cautious,’ undercutting his smooth guitar lines with a buzzing synth bassline and choppy vocal samples lingering in the background.

‘Cautious‘ is out now by Darkroom Records, buy/stream it here.

Emerging as a top emcee in the Australian grime and hip-hop scenes, young gun Nerve has firmly positioned himself to become one of the most exciting prospects of 2020. He continues this mission with his latest single 'Hopscotch', which follows his hugely popular 2019 effort 'Sunday Roast' that landed him on triple j rotation and the #4 most played artist on triple j Unearthed.  Listen to 'Hopscotch' HERE and watch the Kyel Golly-directed video HERE. Despite his roots in the gritty underground, 'Hopscotch' is a prime example of his evolution as an artist, flexing his pop prowess as both a rapper and a producer. Revolving around an understated yet undeniably infectious hook, 'Hopscotch' also uses playful, off-kilter production to get the dancefloor moving, while Nerve delivers bars with his usual boyish charm. "I woke up, made this beat and wrote the entire track in about 2 hours," Nerve says. "Normally, that's how most of the best stuff happens cause I just catch a certain energy and smash it all out. I had it recorded by the afternoon, and I knew it was gonna be the next single." Continuing the feel-good aura created by 'Hopscotch', the accompanying video (filmed by A/V Club) was filmed in Nerve's sunny hometown of Brisbane, creating a fantasyland where he's joined by his tightly-knit crew No1 Network, as well as sports cars, pool parties and a 10-year-old version of himself. Next up, Nerve will be touring with UK heavyweight Aitch, after appearing on the official remix for his #1 UK single 'Taste' alongside Hooligan Hefs. They will be performing in New Zealand, as well as four sold-out shows across Australia. The Aitch tour follows Nerve's blazing performances at Listen Out, Falls Festival and BIGSOUND in 2019.   'Hopscotch' by Nerve is available to stream now. Tour Dates Friday 6th March: Landsdowne Hotel, Sydney Saturday 7th March: Pitch Music & Arts, Moyston Terr is the musical project of Daniela Caldellas, a Berlin-based DJ-producer and label owner who grew up in Brazil’s Belo Horizonte. Her sound is a cross-pollination of Italo-cosmic house and techno, which quickly landed her a debut release on Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings. Since then, she has released on other world-renowned labels including Correspondant, Permanent Vacation and Phantasy. She also set up the Clash Lion imprint, alongside Shall Ocin and Daniel Watts. The label broke through instantly with the first release being a new production from Maceo Plex’s side project Maetrik. Recently, Caldellas has created a string of releases, alongside being signed to Berlin-based agency Temporary Secretary, home of Dixon, Gerd Janson and Ame. Alongside an already booked out and eventful year for Terr, she will be coming to Australian shores, playing this year’s fourth edition of Pitch Music & Arts. Terr’s impressive talent is constantly driving to emulate herself as a name to remember. Starting her early years playing in punk bands, guitars were her medium of sound production. At 19, she asked her friends to teach her the basics of “computer music”, quickly unravelling a previously unknown infatuation with electronic production, and the rest is history.  Spending 12 months researching and learning new production techniques, plus investing in analog gear, she quickly was known as a “studio freak” and was ready to once again rock the world, though in another way. Her first solo project was born in 2016 which is when she called herself ‘Terr’, inspired by the 1970’s film “Fantastic Planet” where ‘Terr’ is the name of the main human character. Terr’s unique sound and talent made her debut release, a three-track EP titled Burn the Past on Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings, felt like a progression that was only natural.  Established in 2017, Caldellas own label Clash Lion, is a mix of three personalities where together with Shall Ocin and Daniel Watts, they combine their different backgrounds and merge forces to create an open-minded label. The label broke through instantly with its first EP Maetrik, a Maceo Plex's side project witnessing a resurgence in a number of years, aptly named as ‘Return’. Since then, artists like FiberRoot, ANNA and Shall Ocin have graced the label’s very own back catalogue.  In 2018, Caldellas released ‘Dust’ on her label featuring remixes from Curses, Cardopusher as well as fellow label founder, Daniel Watts. The same year also saw the release of two solid EP’s on both Permanent Vacation and Correspondant, respectively. All 3 EP’s have gained Caldellas global recognition, being played by top tastemakers all across the Electronic soundscape. Her impressive talent also saw her recently being signed to Temporary Secretary, under the same roof amongst world class acts like Dixon, Roman Flügel, Jennifer Cardini and Gerd Janson, to only name a few. As someone who is always trying to release unique electronic music, and constantly experimenting with no thresholds attached, this Brazilian will not stop resuscitating the original idea of electronic innovation and pioneering.  Connect with Terr:

PRAISE FOR JEREMY NEALE   Winner Queensland Music Awards Song Of The Year - Dancin' & Romancin' Winner Queensland Music Awards Best Rock Single Recipient of Grant McLennan Fellowship 4ZZZ Album of the Week "A new stylistic depth and emotional heft now augmenting his trademark ability to conjure hooks and melodies at will" - The Music ★★★★ "Instant classics with perky, side-stepping tempos that camouflage anxiety-ridden lyrical content" - STACK Jeremy Neale has today released his new album We Were Trying To Make It Out. Watch the new video for 'Tried and True (Raise the Roof)' below. Brisbane fans can see Jeremy perform tonight at Jet Black Cat for a very special in-store at 6.30PM. Across March, Jeremy will perform at Red Eye Records in Sydney, Summertown Studios in Adelaide and Rocksteady Records in Melbourne. Full details available below. Since his 2017 debut album release, Neale took out the 2018 Queensland Music Award for Song of The Year for single Dancin’ & Romancin’, signed a global publishing deal with GAGA International / Rough Trade, received extensive play across US college radio and was the recipient of the Grant McLennan Fellowship. As part of this fellowship Neale spent three months in New York City during 2018, attending a songwriting masterclass at NYU, collaborating with local writers and as it turns out, most importantly, resetting his life. Many years stuck in a cycle of ever-changing work, relentless side-hustling and various degrees of financial ruin had taken a toll and the opportunity to escape the pressure cooker for a brief period of time helped immensely to cure the burnout. The distance from home enabled a birds-eye view of what was and wasn’t working and enabled him to figure out what exactly he wanted from music and how the desire to create music could fit into a life worth living. Upon his return home to Brisbane, Australia, armed with new purpose and an openness to collaboration, he set to work on recording his sophomore record We Were Trying to Make It Out. Sonically, We Were Trying to Make It Out contains Neale’s penchant for melodic hooks, delivered coherently and directly without compromise or pastiche. This is the Jeremy Neale sound - the result of years of searching and refining - honest, fully realised and immediate. Guitar pop underpinned by classic songwriting is potentially the recipe for finding oneself outside the current musical climate but is also the hallmark of creating something truly timeless. On We Were Trying to Make It Out Neale explains the album title as the justification for the brutality you’ll put yourself through in an attempt to escape your demons.“There are a lot of sacrifices you have to make in order to create music if you’re not major label backed or independently wealthy and every mistake you make has direct consequences for your everyday quality of life." We Were Trying to Make It Out is a record written across two cities and two years. Early Jeremy Neale recordings might have read as a tribute to those who came before him, but here on his second record - he has found his sound and his voice.   Stream / Purchase We Were Trying To Make It Out: https://jeremyneale.lnk.to/WWTTMIO Jeremy Neale - 'Tried and True (Raise the Roof)' JEREMY NEALE IN-STORE DATES Friday 28th February - Brisbane Jet Black Cat Music, 6.30PM 72A Vulture Street West End, QLD 4101 Event Page Thursday 5th March - Sydney Red Eye Records, 5.00PM 143 York Street Sydney NSW 2000 Event Page Thursday 19th March - Adelaide Summertown Studios, 7.00PM 13 Paringa Ave, Somerton Park SA 5044 Event Page Friday 20th March - Melbourne Rocksteady Records, 6.00PM Level 1, Mitchell House 358 Lonsdale St Melbourne VIC 3000 Event Page OTHER DATES Saturday 28th March - Brisbane Music at Nucleus, World Science Festival Brisbane Event Page

Jeremy Neale has today released his new album We Were Trying To Make It Out. Watch the new video for ‘Tried and True (Raise the Roof)’ below.

This is the Jeremy Neale sound – the result of years of searching and refining – honest, fully realised and immediate. Guitar pop underpinned by classic songwriting is potentially the recipe for finding oneself outside the current musical climate but is also the hallmark of creating something truly timeless.

On We Were Trying to Make It Out Neale explains the album title as the justification for the brutality you’ll put yourself through in an attempt to escape your demons.“There are a lot of sacrifices you have to make in order to create music if you’re not major label backed or independently wealthy and every mistake you make has direct consequences for your everyday quality of life.”

We Were Trying to Make It Out is a record written across two cities and two years. Early Jeremy Neale recordings might have read as a tribute to those who came before him, but here on his second record – he has found his sound and his voice.

SLEAFORD MODS Announce All That Glue The Ultimate Collection of All Things Sleaford Mods First ever Australian tour starts tomorrow! Announce in-store signings in Sydney and Melbourne

by the partae February 28, 2020
written by the partae

Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn stepped out of 2019 with a UK Top Ten album under their belt, Eton Alive, their biggest sold out tour to date and the swagger of a band that have never been more relevant, topically challenging and downright entertaining.

Sleaford Mods are set to continue their onslaught into 2020 with the release of All That Glue, a collection of songs spanning the last seven years of the bands career; an array of crowd pleasers, B sides, unheard tracks and rarities for fans and the curious, released via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records.

Over the past few years Sleaford Mods have become one of the most intractable British pop stories. One of its best. Their music is drawn at a flawless fault-line of anger, tenderness and humour, a triumvirate of raw energy which frequently jostles in the space of a cadence for supremacy. On record you can hear their sinews, live you can touch their veins.

Ahead of All That Glue’s release the band will be making available fan favourite Jobseeker for the first time.  In addition, footage from the duo’s acclaimed sell out show last year at the Eventim Apollo, will be released for the first time and kicks off with an incendiary performance of ‘Tweet Tweet Tweet’, which will be available to watch on the band’s YouTube channel.  WATCH HERE.

To mark the release of All That Glue, Sleaford Mods have consented to a no-holds-barred inquisition from their fans, friends and enemies.   To put a question to Jason and Andrew, would-be interviewers can tweet their questions using the hashtag #AskModsAnything, or respond in the comments section of Sleaford Mods ‘Ask Mods Anything’ posts on Facebook and Instagram. Questions will be collated and put to Sleaford Mods in a special filmed Q&A.

Kicking off tomorrow, Sleaford Mods will embark on their first ever Australian tour, a playing a 10-date run of headline dates and festivals including Farmer & The Owl, Golden Plains, WOMADadelaide & A Festival Called Panama. The band will also be hosting in-store signings at Sydney’s Red Eye Records at Wednesday 4 March and at Melbourne’s Rocksteady Records on Wednesday 11 March. Full dates below.

Over his 40 plus year career, Kelly has explored a variety of genres that all come full circle to create his distinct and recognisable sound. She also released new single ‘Carry You’ written by Tim Minchin for his TV show ‘Upright’. The folk-inflected pop of Sydney based Alex The Astronaut is some of the most honest music you will ever hear. From pointing out the hypocrisy of having billionaires in power while the rest of us get parking fines in hospitals, as noted on her debut single, 2016’s Already Home, to penning an open letter to her 16 year old self on Not Worth Hiding, a song about accepting yourself for who you are and owning one’s sexuality, Alex’s songs are straight from the heart and pull no punches.  Not Worth Hiding became the unofficial anthem to the Vote Yes movement and is one of the most important songs of the last decade. The haunting I Like To Dance focuses on the tragedy of domestic violence and other tracks simply describe everyday life at home with family or the excitement of life in the Big Apple.  Tamworth native, Andy Golledge has become an inner western Sydney legend. His Americana style songs captivating often sold out crowds everywhere he plays. From wildman antics that see him jumping on the bar or piano ripping through songs with Springsteen like energy, to fragile Neil Young style intimacy that gets the whole room to stop and listen, Andy’s music is painfully honest, instantly relatable and above all, catchy as hell.  www.empiretouring.com.au

R3HAB Turns Up the Heat on New Remix of Steve Aoki & Maluma’s “Maldad”

Artists: Steve Aoki & Maluma

Label: Ultra Records

If you’re in need of a track to spice up your date night, look no further than R3HAB’s new remix of Steve Aoki and Maluma’s “Maldad.” Delivering a more melodic take on the original, R3HAB incorporates deep, bouncy basslines into the track’s Latin-inspired melodies, which complement Maluma’s sultry vocals with dancefloor-ready energy. “Maldad” is the second time that Aoki and R3HAB have remixed each other, after Steve’s remix of R3HAB & ZAYN & Jungleboi’s “Flames” dropped in January. It’s always a good time when these two heavyweights join forces, so let’s hope some more exciting collaborations between R3HAB and Steve Aoki are coming this year!

“This one was fun. With 2 great names like Steve Aoki & Maluma it’s always an honor to remix a track. Steve and I go way back, of course, and Maluma stands for everything that is cool about Latin artists these days. The combination is great, and I tried to give the song R3HAB’s flavor in the remix, which I think works well. Enjoy!” – R3HAB

Over the last eight years, the Dutch/Moroccan artist Fadil El Ghoul – better known as R3HAB – has established himself as a leader at the forefront of modern electronic music. His talent has been called the “future of the craft” by the likes of Forbes and Billboard, and he’s circuited the globe’s best clubs and festivals, all without the backing of a formal record label. In 2017, R3HAB independently released his debut album “Trouble” through his imprint CYB3RPVNK, which amassed over a half-billion streams globally and officially placed R3HAB among electronic music’s heavy hitters. He made number 14 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 list in 2019, topping the charts with tracks like “Lullaby” and “Hold On Tight,” while his sophomore album “The Wave,” revealing more complex, emotional and experimental layers of himself, has amassed over 250 million streams on Spotify alone. In 2019 R3HAB’s “All Around The World” with A Touch of Class quickly became his biggest ever record already topping 200M streams across platforms and achieving gold & platinum status in 8 countries. Stay tuned to see what this ever-evolving artist has up his sleeve next!

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I live in Los Angeles, CA. The music scene is wide and varied, but is a surprisingly small world. I’m always meeting musicians that know friends of mine or have played music with them. There is a lot of music to be heard on any given night and that is an exciting thing to be around. How did you first start playing music? There was a family heirloom upright piano in my house growing up. I started playing around with that as a child. I would sit and figure out melodies of songs I heard my parents listening to, and come up with my own ideas. Later, I started learning saxophone in school and by my teenage years, picked up the guitar and quickly got very serious about it.  What been happening recently? I'm consistently working on new music for Missives, collaborative projects, and instrumental music. Looking forward to releasing my debut single Dissolve. Your new single 'Dissolve' is about to be released from your debut EP, what influenced the sound and songwriting for Dissolve and the EP? My influences span quite a far and wide spectrum. Since I first heard "Music for 18 Musicians" by Steve Reich, the idea of repetitive musical figures changing over time or staying constant while everything changes around them has been an important part of how I hear musical ideas. Moving harmony versus static figures, textures, and atmosphere inform a lot of my sound. My music is an amalgam of that minimalist influence and inspiration from artists like FKA Twigs, Thom Yorke, James Blake, and Bjork. The songwriting revolves around concepts of discovery, transformation, loss, acceptance, and the passage of time.  How did you go about writing Dissolve? I had recently bought a Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 08 synth. I was exploring the sounds it was capable of and stumbled into a bass line that felt like it was falling over itself. It turned into a fully realized song shortly after that once I added a beat, some synth pads for harmony and a vocal melody. Lyrically, the song is about experiencing loss and navigating the disorientation that comes along with it.  Where and when did you record and who with? Dissolve and the other tracks on “Patterns of Us” (EP) were recorded in my studio over the course of the last couple years. I've worked as a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist for years now and wrote, recorded, and mixed everything myself. I have two tracks with guest vocalists, very close friends of mine, Patrick Joseph and Eleanor Crane. I’m lucky to have close friends who are also incredibly talented artists in their own right.  How did you approach the recording process? Recording and writing happen simultaneously. They are both the process of creation and flow back and forth between each other. I record one sound or instrument that then inspires an idea for another layer or texture, and so on and so on until a structure begins to emerge. This happens fairly quickly, so I often have place-holder takes of various parts or instruments. Once I have a solid song idea mapped out, I go back and refine individual instruments as needed. I definitely enjoy using recording as a way to explore different sounds, or altering instruments or objects to make them sound like something else.  What programs/instruments did you use to record? I use Pro Tools for recording and mixing. I use some software synths, but the majority of the EP utilized hardware synths like the Prophet 08, Moog Sub37, and Mother 32. There is also a fair amount of guitar as that is my primary instrument. And a lot of guitar that doesn't sound anything like a guitar. I use an Echoplex Digital Pro Plus looper to create atmospheric and ambient textures using the guitar. I also like using vocal loops to create textures and pads. There are percussive elements in the songs sourced from random objects like a paper wrapper, scratching on cloth, tapping on things, etc.  What do you like to do away from music? I spend a lot of time camping, hiking, and being outside. Anywhere I can find mountains, water, and quiet. I read as much as I can, and watch movies and documentaries. I enjoy spending time with friends and family.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Thom Yorke's latest album Anima has been in heavy rotation for me. As well as Bon Iver's most recent album and Magdalene by FKA Twigs. Anything by Max Richter.  What's planned for 2020? I'll be releasing my debut EP "Patterns of Us" and continuing to work on new music for Missives, possibly for another EP or a full length depending on how everything shapes up. Favourite food and place to hangout? Pho or sushi (at least today). My favourite place to hangout is in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California or Northern New Mexico where I grew up. There is also a neighborhood bar here in LA that I go to fairly regularly with friends. It feels like it should be a bar in a random mountain town somewhere, but it sits in the middle of Eagle Rock, a north east LA neighborhood I’m quite fond of.

Missives

written by the partae

Missives is an indie/alt-electronic musical project based in Los Angeles. It is led by producer and multi-instrumentalist Lucas Martinez, who is a native of the mountains of northern New Mexico, a place of wind and trees and echoes. Missives’ sound is lyrical, atmospheric and rhythmic, and informed by minimalist composers, and electronic/experimental music. The compositions feature slow harmonic rhythms, intricate beats, repeated melodic figures and pulsing synths, woven into songs that explore discovery, transformation, loss, acceptance, and the passage of time. Missives’ influences range from Thom Yorke and Steve Reich to FKA Twigs, James Blake and Sigur Ros.

“Dissolve” is a song about experiencing loss (of a friend, a relationship, or even a moment in time) and navigating the disorientation of that loss. It is about feeling lost and searching, sometimes aimlessly, for something to help pull you out of the haze or fog that you may not even realize you are in.” – Missives

I’m consistently working on new music for Missives, collaborative projects, and instrumental music. Looking forward to releasing my debut single Dissolve.

Your new single ‘Dissolve’ is about to be released from your debut EP, what influenced the sound and songwriting for Dissolve and the EP?

My influences span quite a far and wide spectrum. Since I first heard “Music for 18 Musicians” by Steve Reich, the idea of repetitive musical figures changing over time or staying constant while everything changes around them has been an important part of how I hear musical ideas.

I’ve worked as a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist for years now and wrote, recorded, and mixed everything myself.

And a lot of guitar that doesn’t sound anything like a guitar.

Thom Yorke’s latest album Anima has been in heavy rotation for me. As well as Bon Iver’s most recent album and Magdalene by FKA Twigs. Anything by Max Richter.

What’s planned for 2020?

I’ll be releasing my debut EP “Patterns of Us” and continuing to work on new music for Missives, possibly for another EP or a full length depending on how everything shapes up.

The NSW band will play metro cities for the first time since their 2018 LO LA RU album shows, across venues such as Fortitude Music Hall (Bris), Freo.Social (Freo), The Forum (Melb), and The Enmore Theatre (Syd). After having embarked on 3 regional tours in the past 18 months, the band will be revisiting old regional favourites as well as some towns they’ve never played before, including Bundaberg, Warrnambool, Shepparton and more. Since its November release, ‘Live In Life’ has been a summer anthem across triple j (#1 most played) & the HIT network, as well as spins across Nova National Late Nights & Triple M National Late Night/Weekends. Elsewhere, the track has been hugely embraced by fans across Spotify & Apple Music, totalling over 7.5 million streams, and generating over 100,000+ Shazams in Australia alone. Blending their signature hooky choruses with a shadowy undertone, ‘Live In Life’ was co-produced by the band and Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, Mallrat) & recorded in the same WW2 bunker that birthed their third and most recent album, 2018’s LO LA RU. Premiered on triple j Breakfast, the world of ‘Live In Life’ follows a person over the course of one night as they come to terms with the gravity of a relationship breakdown. As the sun sets, they’re feeling positive about the next chapter – a feeling that’s quickly swallowed by the weight of regret as night falls, by which point the damage is done and they realise it’s time to move on. ‘Live In Life’ follows the band’s 2019 single ‘Falling Asleep At The Wheel’, a collaboration with US punk-hip hop star Vic Mensa, which was first played by Zane Lowe on Beats 1 and premiered live at last year’s Splendour in the Grass to a packed Amphitheatre at sunset. The past 12 months has seen The Rubens travel to North America, UK & Europe for headline tours, perform and release their MTV Unplugged Live In Melbourne album, launch their Chucka Buckas initiative + bunker down to write and focus on new music. 2018 proved to be a landmark year for The Rubens, which saw the release of their third album LO LA RU, including hits ‘Never Ever feat. Sarah’ (2 x Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Gold) and ‘God Forgot’, a mammoth headline tour across Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Europe and supporting P!NK on her massive 42-date sell out arena tour of Australia and New Zealand. Joining The Rubens on their upcoming ‘Live In Life’ tour is Alice Ivy. The artist’s eclectic signature sound spans sample-influenced soul, hip-hop and electronic pop that she brings to life live as a multi-instrumentalist. With her second album set for release mid-2020 and a reputation for explosive live performances, Alice Ivy is fast becoming recognised as one of Australia’s most versatile and exhilarating artists. Fresh off a successful 2019, hip hop duo Otiuh (pronounced Oh-tee-yah) are back to bring the heat with the release of their new single and video, 'One For Me' - a middle finger to Tinder and dating apps.  Born from a mumbled iphone recording when drifting to sleep the track is the first taste of their forthcoming second EP La Festa that will drop later this year.  A pivot from their usual high octane rap ferocity, the track is a fusion of smooth vocals, soft acoustic guitars and psychedelic synths, creating a mellow, soft-groove track. 'One For Me' is a playful, tongue-in-cheek love song about dating in today's digital age. "One For Me is a light-hearted love song about getting off of Tinder. The idea came to me when I went home alone to my bed after a night out and I felt absolutely no need to check my messages. I realised my life did not involve checking dating biographies, selfies or back-and-forth messages with upwards of 10 people at a time looking for a prospective lover. I mumbled the chorus idea into voice recorder on my phone before I fell asleep", says Cesare. Deviating from their usual music process, this is the first Otiuh track that features Cesare Papa singing while still incorporating tight rap lyricism from emcee Jahmeil Baker.  Shot digitally and co-directed by local Perth Videographer Dylan Guy,  the clip has been edited to look as if it were shot on Super 8 film to give an old 'hi-fi' home movie aesthetic. The video clip flicks through shots of the pair performing in various areas of Cesare's family home. Cesare goes on to explain: "The lemons, the olive oil, the wine – it’s all a little peek into how we would spend our day at home musing over a love interest. We wanted to show sensuality and masculinity in our own way, always with a twist of humour. Blondie, the chicken was a little bit of a diva and would not sit still for the couple of minutes required to shoot."  'One For Me' arrives off the back of a year of achievements for the pair, including reviews and airplay on triple j (Home & Hosed, Drive) for singles RÜFÜS DU SOL - New Sky (The Otiuh get down edit)' and Daytona Rolling and a premiere on triple j unearthed TOPS for their single 'Pink Gelato'.  The duo were also shown love on Apple Music’s 'The New Australia' playlist and graced TV screens across Rage and MTV. The two aren't slowing down anytime soon, with a second release due next month, followed by the release of their EP La Festa in May. OTIUH release funky tongue-in-cheek single ‘One For Me’
