Mattia Saviolo is one of techno’s most talked about young talents following a recent two-part release on UMEK’s label 1605 which has been dominating the top of sales charts on leading music download websites. Hyped to learn more about Mattia Saviolo, we caught up with him to discover more about his background and releases on 1605… Where are you currently based? I am currently based in Berlin, which I think is on planet earth, but sometimes it seems a bit out of this world lol. How did you first start playing music? Well, I started DJ’ing when I was fifteen. I was already in love with electronic music and started DJ’ing at home with CDJ-1000’s and basic two channel mixer. This got me deeper into music, and my passion continued to grow, until I eventually decided I also wanted to make my own music. What has been happening recently? A lot things man, and it has been difficult to handle the balance between bad things like Covid, and more positive things like my new releases, so it has been a crazy few months. My goal is to stay positive, and bring positivity to the other people… especially with my music! You have just released a new EP via UMEK's label 1605, what influenced the sound and song-writing for the EP? Well, I would say that for me it’s like an introspective trip inside myself, and my main mission is to communicate/express what I feel like to the other people, as sharing my emotions and mental images through music often creates connections with others. What is your process for writing the music? Basically, it took me almost a year to create these four tracks, working hard in the studio and trying to experiment with new things and techniques. I was really inspired about the idea of these big hangars, warehouses and festivals… I was imagining how these tracks would sound, as I wanted to create something that would really fill the space and make an amazing dance floor experience. Where and when did you record/produce? Almost every day, I try to be very regular with a routine of work, as every second I spend focusing on music makes me feel so happy. What programs/instruments did you use to record/produce? Mainly I use Ableton Live and produce 80% of my sounds using that software program. I also have some hardware that I share with two friends Nico Cabeza and Luis Arboleda who also use my studio. We have a Moog Sub 37, Roland 909 and an 808... for processing a mix and mastering I use some internal plugins. Please tell us what this EP means to you, and was the end result as you imagined it to be when first making a start? This is a great question… I like all the music I create, but some tracks will never be released! It is part of the game, as although I have a strong connection with all my works, it is only the tracks that also connect with others that get signed. Having the feedback from UMEK to keep making improvements, made me go a bit deeper with my thought process on these EP’s for 1605, and that allowed me to really express myself with the final versions. How did you come to release with 1605, and how has the experience been so far? UMEK contacted me on Facebook and was interested in my music after hearing my releases on other labels. He was curious to listen my unsigned tracks and when I sent to him a playlist with some tracks, he replied saying “man I have a problem, I’ve never had so many good demos before lol”. I was really excited to hear that, and from there we decided to sign these two EP’s. 1605 is highly organised and solid with a good PR agency (Mainline PR) and a talent mixing and mastering engineer (Gregor) who can make things stand out. So, I am extremely happy to be working with them. Who are you listening to at the moment? There are too many great DJ’s and producers out there, I always dig a lot in genres outside of the techno capsule...so its impossible to choose just few artists, as it would be unfair on all the others I didn’t mention. What do you like to do away from music? I love playing soccer! I recently moved to a new flat here in Berlin, and I’m lucky to have a little football field in front of where I live, so on sunny days I’m often spending a lot of time playing and running with a football. I also like to eat… I’m always up for having dinner and drinks outside with friends :) What is planned for the remainder of 2020? Honestly, I’m not 100% sure I will release much other music during the lockdown period, but I’ve collected and finished around eight new tracks, so we will have to see once I’ve set them out to a couple of labels. Favourite food, and place to hang out? Some of my favourite spots to eat in Berlin include Adana Grillhouse, Brlo Brwhouse, La lupa, Donna Drancesca, and loads of others… https://soundcloud.com/mattiasaviolo https://www.facebook.com/officialmattiasaviolo https://www.instagram.com/mattia_saviolo/?hl=en

MUZZ teams up with P4VAN & Miss Trouble on rowdy new single ‘The Warehouse’

Listen

MUZZ’s debut album ‘The Promised Land’ is firing up the drum & bass scene and beyond with its cutting-edge production and glittering features. ‘The Warehouse’ is the latest single to be plucked from this majestic record, featuring former Foreign Beggars legend P4VAN and Miss Trouble trading blows on the mic.

The track begins with spooky plucked synth tones, setting the mood for the sinister half-sung, half-rapped vocal from Miss Trouble and swirling, classic D&B style Reese bass tones. P4VAN’s crowd-commanding delivery builds the intensity as the snare hits signaling the push towards the drop. It’s then a wild ride through bone-crushing drums, mind-bending fills, ever-evolving beats and gnarly bass tones.

The breakdown is a brooding, dark affair where thick currents of bass hover below menacing synth pulses. An intense, pitch-rising build with pounding drums leads us to the crescendo section, where the rhythm switches up to a more insistent, pounding energy, the bass hits harder and the synths growly more furiously still. The track ends just as it threatens to collapse in on itself, leaving you wanting more and heading for that replay button.

“‘The Warehouse’ is for sure the darkest track on the album” says MUZZ. “It has lots of elements of mystery and cinematic influence, but in a way that makes you tread cautiously with fear. I used a lot of dissonant background guitars and shepherd tones, as well as shivering tremolo cellos to kind of signify the idea of beauty falling apart.“

POTION RECORDS
SODA STATE – ‘THE LOOK’

OUT NOW

With tones of nostalgia and shot in the style of a retro ‘Super 8’ movie, the forthcoming video from London based duo Soda State is full of heart-warming references from childhood, past decades and popular culture. Most notably the 90s; the decade that introduced new technology, alongside iconic music, movies and television. Soda State instantly transport the listener lyrically, sonically and visually, to their ‘Soda State Of Mind’.

Shot from the point of view of childhood, the video brings through emotions that bubble away throughout growing up as a kid; from fondly remembering family holidays by the sea to lazing around and looking for adventure. From aliens attacking and battling with Star Wars light sabers made from sticks to playing Space Invaders and Super Mario Kart, the video launches into the feelings of escapism from the adult world.

“We want the music we create to take the listener into a place of escapism.
Lyrically, sonically and visually, there’s a sense of taking yourself away from
the world around you, whether giving yourself over to the moment or losing
yourself in a feeling of nostalgia. We call this feeling of escapism
‘The Soda State Of Mind’” – M & Tracie

Soda State, consisting of Mike ‘M’ Ridley & Sam Tracie, come into the electronic dance scene as a brand-new all-encompassing project and virtual band. With strong digital conceptualisation their animated characters have been transported into a utopian world, found as they stumbled across a binary digital code of 0’s & 1’s during a studio session.

Their debut single ‘The Look’ is a contemporary rework of Metronomy’s famous 2011 single of the same name. Their rework is layered with 80s synths, solid kick drums and a floating ethereal vocal. Taking reference and influence from the French House sound of Daft Punk, M83 and Duke Dumont’s ‘Ocean Drive’ and alongside a string of forthcoming releases, Soda State are fast becoming a one to watch for 2020.

Soothsayer are excited to reveal the latest member of their ever-growing roster, UK-born, Sydney-based producer Jonny Reebok. Jonny Reebok carefully crafts tracks that reference the halcyon days of electronic music while creating a lane all for himself. After a series of online drops, remixes and edits, Soothsayer today release Jonny Reebok’s latest offering, ‘Aphrodite Dub’. Receiving its radio premiere by FBi and debuting online via Majestic Casual, ‘Aphrodite Dub’ was inspired by a desire to “create dark, heavy club music and keep you on all ten toes with bass heavy direction”. Cruising at 134BPM, ‘Aphrodite Dub’ walks us through a darkened street, late at night, as echoing synths and tight bass vibrate through the thin air, enticing us to immerse ourselves in the track’s masterful mix of UKG, jungle and dub. ‘Aphrodite Dub’ is the first half of a double a-side due later this month. Jonny Reebok explains how his discovery of dub and early-era dubstep influenced the progression of his new sound;   “After some much needed time away from releasing music I have had the time and space to explore what sound I want to continue to make. I’m moving away from sample-based tracks and more towards rhythm and bass focused music. ‘Aphrodite Dub’ is a garage/dub mash up I finished in an unknown airport on my Europe trip. I couldn’t help myself but add some classic breaks to the track. This was my first time experimenting with sending digital sounds thru analogue equipment. Kinda wild to think that my sound has gone from house 2 garage 2 dubstep just like the original UK scenes progressed in the 90s into the 2000s.” – Jonny Reebok Jonny Reebok has been bringing club tunes to headphones since online viral 2018 release ‘You Don’t Know Flavours Bwoy’ which saw radio love from triple j and FBi. His infamous remix of Soothsayer’s electronic duo ALTA’s single ‘Figured Out’ has amassed over 1 million plays on streaming services and has seen him curate mixes for Let Them Eat Cake as well as perform alongside the likes of Shanti Celeste, Moxie and Peach at Colour Club in 2019. Soothsayer A&R manager Chris Rigney had this to say about teaming up with Reebok;   “This release is a dream come true for us at Soothers. Jonny’s done remixes for us, played our parties and been illegally adopted by ALTA so it was only natural to link up for a release. The music he makes is truly exceptional for someone his age, and we’re just happy to play a lil part in the next phase of his story. He truly is a talent for the future so watch this space.”    Soothsayer is thrilled to share the talent of Jonny Reebok with the world and cannot wait to see what the future beholds for the act who is well beyond his years.  'Aphrodite Dub' Jonny Reebok Single out now through Soothsayer Available to buy/stream here JONNY REEBOK

COVID closures and pandemic restrictions weren’t enough to dampen the spirits at this year’s National Indigneous Music Awards, with the event going completely virtual for the first time across TV, radio and online, showing the resilience and tenacity of a community intent on celebrating First Nations talent from across our lands.

The night’s big winner was Yolngu man Baker Boy who took home trophies for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Film Clip of the Year for his hit Meditjin. Accepting his award live from Bendigo, Baker Boy offered love for his fellow First Nations artists and thanked his family across Arnhem Land for their belief and support.

“Woah, my heart! This is crazy. I honestly didn’t think I could win at all tonight, but I just want to say to all the nominees tonight across all of the categories; you are incredible, you are amazing and I am so proud of you all, my brothers and sisters,” said Baker Boy.

“To my family back in Darwin across Arnhem Land, I’m so proud to represent my people and so overwhelmed by the support and success I have achieved rapping in Yolgnu Matha and English.”

Other big winners on the night were Archie Roach who won Album Of The Year for ‘Tell Me Why’, Miiesha with New Talent of the Year, KDA Crew for Community Clip of the Year and Rrawun Maymuru and Nick Wales who took out the Indigenous Language Award for Nyapillilngu (Spirit Lady) and Kee’Ahn who won the Archie Roach Foundation Award.

The two-hour broadcast was rocked by a last minute host change as NT border closures unfortunately benched one of the intended hosts Stephen Oliver, with the legendary Elaine Crombie joined on the night by NIMA Creative Director Ben Graetz.

Opening with a spectacular Welcome to Country and closing with the worldwide premiere studio performance of Midnight Oil’s ‘Gadigal Land’ with Kaleena Briggs, Bunna Lawrie and Dan Sultan, the event stretched over two hours, broadcast on National Indigenous Television (NITV), Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and simulcast across Double J, TEABBA and the National Indigenous Radio Service, creating the largest audience in the event’s history, touching every part of Australia and reaching across the globe. The awards are available to watch now on catch-up on SBS On Demand.

There were touching musical tributes from Archie Roach and Emma Donovan as Ruby Hunter was inducted in the NIMA Hall of Fame and an amazing tribute to the Warumpi Band classic ‘My Island Home’ with a must-watch performance from Neil Murray, Christine Anu, Mau Power, Jim Moginie, Rob Hirst and the Malu Gubaw Kazil (Sea Breeze Children) Choir.

The new generation of Indigenous talent were also well represented with spectacular live performances from Thelma Plum, Miiesha, Mambali and JK-47, while there were live crosses to Jessica Mauboy, Mitch Tambo and Electric Fields as well as remote communities in Yirrkala and Broome.

“I’m extremely proud that while 2020 might have presented its challenges, the National Indigenous Music Awards rose above the noise of this difficult time to present an amazing and uplifting night of First Nations artists,” said Creative Director and host Ben Graetz. “The broadcast has brought the community together in a celebration of resilience and talent. Never before has it been more important to recognise our past, present and future and to come together as one”

Whether virtual or in their traditional home under the stars at the Darwin Amphitheatre, the National Indigenous Music Awards will return in 2021 to celebrate what is sure to be another incredible year in music as our First Nations artists continue to lead the way forward.

blink-182 Drop Timely Song & Video ‘Quarantine’

BLINK-182
DROP TIMELY SONG AND VIDEO, QUARANTINE

Grammy nominated California rock heavyweights, blink-182, have dropped their brand-new track Quarantine – listen HERE. This relevant and timely song features strong drums and killer guitars matched with angsty vocals to stress just how hard we all have been hit by this time spent in isolation and social distancing.

“This song is about the sadness, confusion, anger and frustration we are all experiencing right now. I hope that everybody is safe and that we can get through this very soon. Can’t wait to see you all on the other side.” says Mark Hoppus. Travis Barker adds “The song was inspired by the quarantine and the crappy punk rock music we have loved to play since day one.  All the drums are one take and I even sang some backup vocals. Mark sounds more pissed off then I’ve ever heard him, and I really like it.”

Alongside the brand-new song, blink-182 have also scored two MTV VMA nominations for “Best Rock” and “Best Music Video From Home” for their fan-driven montage to their song Happy Days. Fans of the band can vote now at vma.mtv.com.

blink-182’s latest album NINE is out now on Columbia Records / Sony Music Australia and includes singles I Really Wish I Hated You, Darkside, Happy Days, Generational Divide and Blame It On My Youth.

Since their humble beginnings in 1992 in San Diego, blink-182 have sold over fifty million albums worldwide and rocked audiences around the globe, becoming one of the defining and inspirational rock bands of their generation.

blink-182 is Mark Hoppus (vocals/bass), Travis Barker (drums) and Matt Skiba (vocals/guitar).

CREATURE FEAR RELEASE STOP MOTION VIDEO MADE UP OF 2500 FRAMES FOR NEW SINGLE ‘LITTLE FISHES’

by the partae August 10, 2020
written by the partae

“it’s got swagger and vibrancy by the truckload and kept me hooked from go to whoa” – Declan Byrne, triple j

“Creature Fear are a band that are bound to make you sing, spin and grin along to their incredible, energy-ridden sound.” – The AU Review

“With even more to come, it wouldn’t be too far-out to say that Creature Fear are stepping forward as an act you’ll probably become well-familiar with in the year ahead.” – Pilerats

Melbourne based garage rock band Creature Fear release new stop motion video for single, ‘Little Fishes.’ Inspired by the single artwork, the clip is comprised of 2,500 frames hand drawn by the band, with each drawing cut out individually. The entire video took a full week to complete.

“We were in the final stages of planning the ‘Little Fishes’ music video and were within a week of shooting. However, due to the COVID-19 restrictions and lock down, we had to quickly change our plans and strategy. Jason had previously suggested animation but it seemed like something so out of reach. With not many options and lots of extra time on our hands due to lock down, we quickly re adjusted.”

The band did some trial runs, developed a proof of concept, a story board and jumped straight in. They used books, crates and a plank of wood from the garden to prop up a ring light. They then taped an iPhone into place above a large white notebook which became the background.

“We drew everything individually and cut it all out by hand. With each frame we moved each piece that was on the page. We approached each section like a scene and roughly planned out the movements and beats. A lot of the time we played the scenes out as we were creating them, finding little moments we could play with and that gave us a giggle.”

Following a series of independently released triple j approved singles, 2019 proved to be a breakout year for Creature Fear. Sharing the stage with major acts including Ball Park Music, a run of tour dates with Kingswood, supporting heavy hitters; Boo Seeka, Killing Heidi, The Delta Riggs & Tired Lion as well as selling out headline shows for the launch of singles ‘Baby Love Me’ & breakthrough gem, ‘Makeup’.

Florian Picasso pays tribute to his great grandfather Pablo’s heritage

Exclusive live stream from the Picasso Villa in Cannes on August 11th

On Tuesday, August 11th, Florian Picasso will perform an exclusive live set at the Villa Californie in Cannes, previously inhabited by the great Pablo himself. Florian’s great grandfather lived and created some of his major masterpieces in the magnificent villa such as ‘The Bay of Cannes’ in 1958.

The villa is an unparalleled place of inspiration for Florian who based his main studio in the same place Pablo used to work on his art. To honor his artistic heritage and highlight the unique character of this place, Florian Picasso decided to broadcast a very special live stream.

The exceptional set will be streamed during the stunning sunset of the French Riviera. To close the show off in style, Florian has produced an exclusive soundtrack for the last 10 minutes of his set, as the facade of the villa will come to life with breath-taking architectural projections, lighting, and pyrotechnics. Florian will premiere new records and will end with a very special announcement that will rightfully pay tribute to the historical heritage of his family.

Watch the live stream here at 9:30 pm CEST on August 11th

About Florian Picasso

‘Picasso’ is no stage name; Florian is the great-grandson of the mighty Pablo, adopted by the Picasso family after being born Vietnam. He’s synonymous with a high-octane style of EDM that focuses on larger-than-life, unrelenting riffs and raw textures and is squarely focused on the dancefloor. But within that he shows an impressive range, from pacey trance bangers to phat trap style beats, rampant electro house, and gentle dancepop. Growing up between Paris, Cannes and Switzerland, Florian founds his first musical love in the form of classic hip-hop, before discovering the likes of Basement Jaxx and Groove Armada and beginning his explorations into electronic music. He began DJing ages 13 on a basic setup, learning basic scratching techniques and honing his skills for a few years before he started messing around with beats.

It’s evident from the very good company he keeps in his release schedule that he’s an artist with high standards, collaborating with artists like Martin Garrix, Nicky Romero, and more recently Gashi & Ally Brooke on ‘Like You Do’, Florian Picasso is most certainly piquing the interest of EDM’s uppermost elite.

JOJI AND DIPLO RELEASE 'DAYLIGHT' JOJI'S ANTICIPATED NEW ALBUM 'NECTAR' OUT SEPTEMBER 25 VIA 88RISING
Music News

Joji and Diplo release ‘Daylight’; Joji’s anticipated new album Nectar out Sept 25 via 88rising

PRAISE FOR JOJI

“One of the greatest transformations in modern pop culture…Joji will make you cry”
Rolling Stone

“Anthemic…cathartic”
Pitchfork

“Superstar”
i-D

“Idiosyncratic, complex songs that speak to listeners mired in end times malaise”
TIME

“Extraordinary range and continuous commitment to the elegiac sound he’s known for”
HYPEBEAST

Today, Joji teams up with Diplo on a new collaboration called ‘Daylight‘, the latest single from his highly anticipated new album Nectar, due out on September 25 through 88rising, distributed by 12Tone Music. Just in time for the dog days of summer, this midtempo anthem sets Joji’s lulling vocals against Diplo’s crisp production to create a hazy, shapeshifting aural mirage. Listen and watch HERE.

The vibrant music video for ‘Daylight‘, directed by Munachi Osegbu (Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Hot Girl Summer‘ video), finds Joji and Diplo tasting the high life of a boy band… as struggling PAs on a 90s music video shoot. The two daydreamers bumble around the set and ultimately derail the shoot of the young (at heart) pop divas.

‘Daylight‘ is the fourth pre-release track from Nectar. It follows Gold-certified single ‘Sanctuary‘ and his first 2020 single ‘Run‘, which earned Joji his highest-ever entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and his television debut on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon; and second single ‘Gimme Love‘ which Complex hailed as “a sticky pop anthem with haunting vocals.” Last month, Joji also released a tingly and transformative remix of ‘Gimme Love‘ by Channel Tres.

On the song, Joji says “It might be nice for people to hear a song about daylight, especially when we don’t get as much of it as we used to”, and on the collaboration, Diplo says “Joji is one of my favorite artists. I’m lucky he answered my text!”

‘Daylight‘ is out now via 88rising Records/12Tone Music, LLC/Mad Decent,
under license to Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment,

Brazil’s finest Beowülf heads back to Heldeep Records for ‘Lost Without You’ Out now via Heldeep Records

written by the partae

Brazilian’s super-hot Beowülf is back on Heldeep Records after ‘Rollin’’ picked up over one million streams on Spotify, and the follow-up is every bit the worthy successor.

Our journey begins with a looping acoustic guitar set to tight, hard-hitting beats. A melancholy melody unfolds as we reach the first blissed-out breakdown. Dya’s smooth-as-butter vocal slides into play, a yearning plea to a former lover that’s drenched with soulful. A rousing harmonised vocal refrain heralds the drop, where growling bass tones create a moody undercurrent under the driving beat. More beautiful plucked string sounds grace the second verse and chorus as the beat drops out again for an impactful stripped-back feel. When the beat hits once again, it’s even more satisfying than before.

Beowülf is fast becoming a major player on the dance scene, and has found fame with his solo tracks as well collabs with fellow Brazilian artists like Cat Dealers, Dubdogz and Felguk. His BASSWÜLF mixtapes have also been met with big love from fans, with each episode racking up 10s of 1000s of plays on SoundCloud. Romy Dya is the perfect guest for this beautiful record, with her voice known around the world for her collaboration on Martin Garrix’s massive ‘So Far Away’

‘Lost Without You’ is out now on Heldeep Records!

About Heldeep Records:

International superstar Oliver Heldens founded Heldeep Records to create a platform to showcase the new music of budding producers after receiving 1000s of demos. Since 2014, Heldeep Records has grown from a modest imprint into a fully-fledged label, featuring respected mainstay acts like ALOK, Chocolate Puma, & Dada Life as well as hosting stages at leading festivals across the globe like Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, Electric Forest, Spring Awakening Music Festival and South West Four. Heldeep artists are showcased weekly on Heldeep Radio, which is syndicated across 91 stations, in 66 countries and reaches 118 million people a week.

DUA LIPA & THE BLESSED MADONNA REMIX ALBUM “CLUB FUTURE NOSTALGIA” Featuring Missy Elliott, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Mark Ronson plus a legendary line up of additional artists and remixers to be announced

Dua Lipa has announced the release of “Club Future Nostalgia” – an entirely remixed version of her global #1 album “Future Nostalgia”, created in collaboration with The Blessed Madonna. The album is due for release on Friday August 21st.

“Club Future Nostalgia” is a stellar collection of brand new remixes and features from an incredible roll call of superstars, underground heroes and some of the world’s finest dance music talent. The album has been curated and also mixed into a continuous mixtape format by The Blessed Madonna. Marea Stamper aka The Blessed Madonna is a Kentucky-born, Chicago-adopted and now London-based DJ and producer who has become one of the most celebrated names in global club culture.

“Club Future Nostalgia” is an eclectic and euphoric mix of the past and present, it’s a celebration of musical worlds coming together, with 90’s house blending seamlessly with 2020’s finest pop and remixers, a splash of 80’s soul and a few noughties musical gems added to the blend.

The Blessed Madonna has also remixed “Levitating” feat Missy Elliott and Madonna, which is due for release prior to the album on Thursday August 13th. The album also includes a slam dunk Mark Ronson remix of “Physical” featuring Gwen Stefani. Gwen will be joining Dua on Jimmy Kimmel Live! On August 10th when Dua steps in as guest host of the popular US late night TV show.

On the creation of “Club Future Nostalgia” Dua says, “The last few months have been surreal. I’ve watched you all dance in your homes and on your Zoom parties to Future Nostalgia like you were in the club with me. It brought so much joy to my days spent at home, even though I would’ve much rather been playing these songs live for you all on the road. During this time, I decided to take the party up a notch with the incomparable The Blessed Madonna, who secretly helped me to craft the mixtape that would become “Club Future Nostalgia”. We invited some friends and legends to join in on the fun with us. Absolute queens Missy Elliot and Madonna joined me for an epic remix of “Levitating”, and my dream girl Gwen Stefani and the supreme Mark Ronson teamed up to take “Physical” to the next level. And the party doesn’t stop there – there are so many more surprises to come!”.

On working on the album, The Blessed Madonna says, “Taking Future Nostalgia and reimagining it as a mixtape album was an enormous project, which had to be done in absolute secrecy, alone in my attic. In a way building this fantasy out of this beautiful record Dua had already given us was the perfect task for the pandemic. It was a massive and infinitely detailed task. Creating remixes and originals, curating the dream team of additional remixers and weaving the features into a new album was both daunting and thrilling to say the least. My admiration for Dua only deepened. She is a brilliant, once in a generation artist and a sweetheart. Being able to make this love letter with such a legendary cast of characters is beyond comprehension.

In the end my goal was to build a new world: Club Future Nostalgia, the dance floor we all so desperately need but can’t quite reach. I love this project so much and I hope you love it too”.

The album features many of Dua’s musical heroes and heroines, including the truly iconic Missy Elliot, Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson.

Missy Elliott comments, “I am humbly grateful that Dua asked me to be a part of this record because I am a fan of her work and I love the whole 80’s vibes that her music gives. When her team sent the track, I was like “ooooh this is fire!” and I immediately recorded my verse. She heard it and loved it and here we are!”

Gwen Stefani comments, “I was so excited when Dua reached out about teaming up with Mark Ronson and her for the “Physical” remix. “Club Future Nostalgia” is an epic dance party and I’m thrilled to be a part of it”.

Mark Ronson comments, “I really don’t do remixes much but Dua is my homegirl. I really wanted to make it special for her and also bring something totally new to the song. I basically wanted it to be as good as hearing a brand new song. And then when I heard Gwen’s vocal…I mean, she has such an iconic tone, I was over the moon. It felt so good”.

“Club Future Nostalgia” will be available on all DSPs.

SHUNAJI – ‘COSMIC BLUES’ EP

Following the release of singles, ‘Dirty Girls’ & ‘On My Mind’ ft. My Rugema, Multi-talented producer, rapper and singer Shunaji today releases her long-awaited EP, ‘Cosmic Blues’ via her own Solo Recordings imprint. The London-via-Rome rapper has established herself as an artist to be heard, with poignant lyricism and dynamic productions setting alight her path so far. She has previously garnered support from the MOBO Help Musicians Fund and the PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music, in recognition of her innovative musical style and thought-provoking lyrical flow.

“The ‘Cosmic Blues’ EP combines an experimental hip-hop approach to production, e.g. using sampling techniques, with a more traditional use of instrumentation such as trombone, flute, sax and piano. The EP evolves from my previous projects, where any live instruments were heavily manipulated to fit an electronic music production style. In Cosmic Blues, I worked with musicians to interpret my demos and arrange them in a horizontal (rather than sample-focused, vertical) flow.” – Shunaji

With a deep fascination and yearning to understand the subjects of outer space and natural philosophy, Shunaji’s ‘Cosmic Blues’ EP is a representation of her connection to the cosmos and a journey through her understanding. Throughout the writing and inspiration phases of the body of work, she drew on her fascination of ancient cultures, such as Latin-Greek, The Etrurscans, The Sumerians and beyond; all of which studied celestial bodies to develop their spirituality and self-awareness, helping her to channel her own experiences and challenge herself to push musical boundaries on ‘Cosmic Blues’.

‘Cosmic Blues’ reflects Shunaj’s roots and inspirations that lie deep within the genres of Jazz, Folk, Trip-Hop, Soul & Synthwave. Employing experimental methods as well as old-school hip-hop techniques, she pulls together her knowledge and combines her influences. Shunaji’s approach has led to acclaim within the independent music scene in the UK and Europe, with her sound appealing to a wider audience, that pushes the limitations of mainstream music.

Opening the EP, ‘Cosmic Blues’ represents Shunaji’s launch into outer space, building on her understanding and influences from the cosmos, that she uses to develop her own spirituality and self-awareness. Followed by ‘Wild Coast’, a song that was written during her time in Santa Monica, where she drew inspiration from the sea and landscapes around her, all folding into the beauty that surrounds us in everyday life.

‘Dirty Girls’ provides an eloquent and thought-provoking critique of topics such as slut shaming and the media’s role in normalising the misrepresentation of women, she reclaims the definition of ‘Dirty’, demonstrating sex and sexuality do not affect who she is as a woman, her credibility or intellectual ability. Whereas, ‘On My Mind’ is Shunaji’s first production that features the vocals of a male rapper, London based My Rugema. A song about longing for love, ‘On My Mind’ also reflects on past and lost loves. With the addition of My Rugema, his verse serves as a stunning counter-position for Shunaji’s elegant lyricism and confession of a ‘departed’ woman.

The EP further demonstrates Shunaji’s unique and imitable style that develops cultural conversations through the medium of song. Intertwining subjects and challenging the listener to question their own experiences with love and loss, sexuality and their inner connection to the cosmos.

Shunaji – ‘Cosmic Blues’ – Tracklist:

  1. ‘Cosmic Blues’
  2. ‘Wild Coast’
  3. ‘Dirty Girls’
  4. ‘On My Mind’ ft. My Rugema

Shunaji’s ‘Cosmic Blues’ EP is available now across all platforms via Solo Recordings.
