How would you describe your sound and the music that you play?  My sound is a direction of atmospheric progressive house with techy elements and vocals.  You’re based in Melbourne, let’s pretend for a minute that covid doesn’t exist... What’s the music scene like there? Is there much room for underground electronic music there?  Melbourne’s scene was at a growing point when we went into this global mess. We had a lot of talent brewing and it is starting to show on a global level. From Anthony Pappa returning back to Melbourne and bringing his years of knowledge with him, too guys like GMJ & Matter who are killing it with their releases on global labels currently and have recently just started their own label Meanwhile Recordings with a bang! I would like to see these guys get booked more and overall bringing back some of those prog events that really display the awesome artists’ lots of Australia doesn’t even know they have!  Adding to that I think some of these really amazing artists don’t have the time, energy or health to be out Friday to Sunday socialising just to get there names on the bills. I think when your new you have to do that, but when we are talking about some of the best artists in the world of their genre, then there should be more thought given to their experience and not their social status or popularity.  Ultimately I would love to see our best homegrown talent not go unnoticed.  How did you wind up in electronic music? Were you born with a drum machine in your hand, or did you take the standard “classically trained" route like (apparently) many others?  Haha, I started out when I was younger like many learning Guitar out of school, and Clarinet in school. It was fun and definitely helped form some underlying knowledge but when it comes to music academics I am useless. I was self taught on Ableton and just picked it up and am now at a position I feel comfortable doing what I do best with it.  Are there any gigs or events over the past year or 2 that have really stood out for you either as an artist or a punter?  New Caledonia is always a place that stays close to my heart. The community over there for electronic music is tight and passionate, and their hospitality left a lasting impression on me for life. The last time I travelled there was when I was booked to support Nick Warren for Subcultures 6th Birthday and those gigs were fantastic. In Melbourne there have been some really fantastic events going down at My Aeon leading up to this break, and Morning After were definitely making moves as one of if not the best parties in Melbourne with their Enchanted Gardens Party aswell as hosting The Soundgarden’s Australian Show. You had a bit to do with Nick Warren and the Soundgarden earlier this year. How did that all come about? Are there any plans to work with Nick again in the Future?  I met Nick when I supported him in New Caledonia for his gig there, we spent a day or two seeing each other and chatting, My release was great with them and I am honoured to have been accepted onto such a huge label spearheaded by the creative minds of Nick & Petra. I hope in the future to work with them more, definitely, and can at least say there is still something in the pipelines for us ;) . You recently released a huge tune with John Baptiste, "Neon Sky". What was the collaboration process like? Would you mind walking us through it a bit?  Neon Sky is part of the Neon Skies EP. Me and John have worked together for a few years now and have built up quite a flow in the studio. I can tend to try and create and create and create, whereas John can be very selective and firm when it comes to how something can sound. So together we have a great balance of creating and tightening our songs in the process. Apart from that we just play tennis in the studio and hop on and off the computer more or less having our input. What is your DAW of choice and why?  Ableton is my DAW. I never really learnt anything else and was self taught so stuck with it. I love the intuition that follows after you have spent time figuring out what it is you want to do with it. Once you learn how to get in your flow in your DAW nothing can stop you. What are your 3 favourite plugs at the moment? I always love using my Soundtoys Bundle, Serum & the Reaktor 6 Plugins Who are you listening to at the moment?  I am spending a lot of time in the studio writing my own music at the moment, I receive a fair few promo’s so sorting through them is fun but leaves me tired and just wanting to listen to soft music at the end of the day. I have been doing Meditation and Qi Gong with my partner at the moment outside if my music time and that is really nice.  Where can we find your tracks and sets?  I would say the easiest place would be my Soundcloud as I try and keep everything up to date there. www.soundcloud.com/liam-sieker What do you like to do away from music?  I recently bought some mountain bikes with my partner and we have been loving going on bike rides and exploring the trails around my area. Other then that I like watching shows, playing games occasionally, or meditating and relaxing with my girlfriend. What’s planned for the remainder of 2020? I was supposed to be going on a big travel of Europe and South America with my music at the moment, but due to current circumstances we had to cancel all those plans and are remaining in Australia for now. I hope to make alot more music and prepare for when the world re-opens and I can take my music out to all those international dancefloors! FIG HEAD INTO THE THE STUDIO IN ‘SMOG’ FILM CLIP

by the partae August 14, 2020
written by the partae

Keep an ear out for new music from these guys. It’s definitely coming, and we can confirm it’s very good.” – Happy

Today Sydney slow-glam band Fig unveil the visuals to accompany their recently released new single ‘Smog’ which they’ll launch tomorrow night at a sold out Vanguard.

Offering a peak inside the recording process the film clip was solely shot and edited by the band at Marrickville’s Golden Retriever Studios.

Written as a meditative exorcism of the repetitive, ‘Smog’ speaks of the daily grind through synthy melodies with fuzzy guitars and understated vocals. Lead singer Tim Burnett says of the FBi premiered track “It’s about working 18 hour days, three floors below the streets of New York City’s Financial District. Working all day, writing yourself off, rinse and repeat. Dreaming of getting the fuck out to somewhere else.”

‘Smog’ follows on from previous woozy singles ‘At the Sign of Connie & Charlie’s’, ‘I’ll Sleep When I’m Good and Dead’ and ‘Harumi Hotel’ and their equally cinematic film clips which have been featured on Booooooom TV and chosen as Rage’s Wild One of the week. All these tracks will feature on the band’s forthcoming debut album out later in the year which melds influences from Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie and River-era Bruce Springsteen, with the soft psychedelic approach of Japanese musician Harumi, and modern artists like Weyes Blood and Ariel Pink.

Revelling in the live realm, Fig have sold out all their previous shows including a single launch at The Lansdowne Hotel and a spot on Secret Garden Festival. With a stellar sold out track record they can add their upcoming performance at The Vanguard to the list.

Since 2009, Circus Recordings has built a reputation for releasing music from the biggest names across the House & Techno worlds; as well as discovering the newest talents the industry has to offer. Building on their burgeoning discography, Circus Recordings present rising stars Martin Badder & Shania on Circus with their ‘Ur Type’ EP, complete with a remix from Circus Team member, Bontan coming later this month.   Gracing some of the finest labels house music has to offer, Martin Badder has spread his carefully crafted productions far and wide. Finding homes on labels such as Strictly Rhythm, DFTD, Cr2, REALM, Armada amongst others, his high quality productions, have been picked up and supported by a number of industry heavyweights  Dubfire, Joseph Capriati, Nicole Moudaber, Sasha & Digweed, Carl Craig and Lee Foss; certifying the status of his releases and the caliber of his production abilities.  “I originally wrote ‘Ur Type’ on the piano and could definitely hear wider sounds when playing it. It’s like I knew this would become a house song one day. 3 years later, I was on Instagram and swiping through Instagram stories when I came across some work of Martin’s. I’m always wanting to work with new people from all different genres, so I messaged Martin about working on the song and here we are today!” – Shania After starting to write her own music at the age of 13, London based artist Shania has made appearances on BBC Radio London, BBC Show, The Scene and Tribe Urban Radio. Her songwriting utilises thought-provoking lyricism to create emotive appeal and has earnt her huge popularity as she begins her career. Her first official release with ‘Ur Type’, she is welcomed into the Circus Recording family.  “‘Ur Type’ came about after Shania sent me an Instagram message with a vocal idea and asked if I would be up for writing a track together. On first listen I could hear exactly where I would take the track. The track was produced really quickly; almost as if the idea already existed in my head. I’m so hyped about the release and couldn’t think of a better home than Yousef’s Circus Recordings.” – Martin Badder Making the initial connection via social media, Shania approached Martin Badder with her soulful vocal idea after coming across his work. JOHNNY HUNTER unveil highly anticipated debut EP, EARLY TRAUMA October/November tour dates on sale now!

by the partae August 14, 2020
written by the partae

Fresh off the release of their ‘Hollow Man’ single, Johnny Hunter now celebrates the release of their debut EP, Early Trauma.

The record is the perfect snapshot of one of Australia’s most exciting new bands, operating at full force. Layered with rich tone, emotional depth and a knack for storytelling that feels years beyond their time together as a group, Early Trauma depicts Johnny Hunter at the peak of their creative strengths, leaving the listener wanting to know what’s coming next. “As young adults our talent was unparalleled in wasting opportunities with blissful ignorance. From those decisions stemmed Early Trauma. Each song on this EP is in some way an ode to wasted youth. The energy and time spent on unimportant moments, and the realisation that without those moments we would not be who we are today. It’s our way of reverse engineering the painful memories we carry from our past decisions, so we can grow, develop and with time ultimately heal those scars.” Johnny Hunter

The EP has been teased here and there with the release of ‘Try As You May’, and ‘Pain & Joy’ alongside the more recent ‘Hollow Man’, diving deep into emotive territory listeners can liken to genre pioneers including Joy Division and The Smiths, and Australian contemporaries in Kirin J Callinan, City Calm Down and Liars. Lead single ‘Innocence Interrupted’ serves as an example of the EP’s broader energy. Unafraid to play with darker sonic tones, Early Trauma mixes drama with rich storytelling.  “An ode to Winona Ryder in the 1988 movie, Heathers. The film is about a high school couple who murder their classmates; an absolute hyperbolic example of wasted youth. We wrote the song as though we were writing for the closing credits of the movie. A true ballad for Early Trauma.” Johnny Hunter

Hypnotic vocals weave around post-punk production that has been effortlessly brought together to serve each of the five tracks’ narrative. What sticks out about the songs on the Early Trauma EP is that they each can stand proudly on their own while also being able to connect together as part of a larger story.

Recorded in Sydney’s southwest at A Sharp Recording Studio with ARIA-winning producer Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths), and mastered by Ben Feggans (Cut Copy) of Studios 301, Early Trauma as a final product is refined, beautifully produced and delivered with the essence of the band going untouched. “Written in a dimly lit studio/bedroom in an old townhouse in Redfern on an unplugged Gretsch and a borrowed Microkorg in between work weeks and late nights. Lyrics and parts were bounced off one another on top of the mattress that lay upon the floor of the room. Forever trapped in a futile battle with cockroaches we finalized the songs in Sydenham and recorded them at A Sharp Studios with our producer Adrian Breakspear, who is always on the pursuit for perfection.” Johnny Hunter

PRAISE FOR JOHNNY HUNTER

“When routine bites hard and ambitions are low, Johnny Hunter come through with the lifted modern post-punk anthem to get you lifted out the malaise.”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“What an absolute dream scenario.”
Double J, Zan Rowe

“Like something out of a John Hughes film, Johnny Hunter deliver another dark yet triumphant 80s synth jam.”
Triple J, Nick Findlay

“A listen to Johnny Hunter’s music will reveal punkish stories of heartbreak, overconfidence, and millennial masculinity.”
Pilerats

“Rocking what could best be described as a post-glam-rock aesthetic, Johnny Hunter are much more of an experience than they are a band.” I OH YOU

Melbourne singer-songwriter Josh Cashman returns with his latest breezy single ‘Twenty-Five’, an earnest coming of age reflection taken from his upcoming debut album. The accompanying video was premiered by triple j Unearthed last night, and has already clocked up 13.5k social streams.

Watch the ‘Twenty-Five’ video via YouTube

Honest and heartfelt, ‘Twenty-Five’ expresses the universally experienced feelings that come from comparing where you are in life, to where your younger self imagined you’d be by now. Recorded on tour in Canada during early 2020, the track is built around an infectious chorus that combines Josh Cashman’s melodic indie-roots style with a mesmerising soulful groove, “All of my time I’ve wasted getting high on who I thought I’d be at twenty-five.”

Wrestling with his existence, “It’s only me that’s in the mirror, wishing that I could see clearer” ‘Twenty-Five’ is introspective yet cheerful and sees Josh Cashman observing the natural evolution of people surrounding him, realising he hasn’t focused enough on his personal development. Considering how quickly time passes, he finds acceptance in the fact that his life journey is unique and for him to conquer on his own terms “Turn it around, spit on the ground, tomorrow brings another sun.” The warm guitar tones shine through as his buttery vocals float airily, with each lyric poignantly punctuated by the progressions of the keys.

The video was shot by Melbourne cinematography group TheseWildEyes utilising a Super8 film camera, VHS and Red Cinematic film camera. Clips from Josh’s childhood are intersected with recent footage cruising around Melbourne to emphasise feelings of nostalgia and highlight the speed of which time is passing, while performance shots taken on a Melbourne CBD rooftop help shape the image of who he is becoming.

Devoutly committed to his artistry, Josh Cashman is a self-taught and staunchly independent DIY musician, self-funding his recordings and tours with a deeply ingrained nothing-comes-easy mentality. He has shared the stage with beloved Australian acts including Tash Sultana, John Butler Trio and Ocean Alley, and amassed 3.5 million+ streams across dreamy singles including ‘Law Of Attraction‘ and ‘When A Friend Becomes A Lover’.

DAVE THE BAND RELEASE NEW SINGLE, WHERE YOU ARE TAKEN FROM THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, SLOB STORIES OUT AUGUST 28

by the partae August 14, 2020
written by the partae

One of Newcastle’s best kept secrets is about to be exposed. dave the band, Newcastle’s exciting 3-piece indie-rock band have released their brand new single, Where You Are, taken from their long-awaited debut album, Slob Stories out August 28 via believe.

“Where You Are was one of the first tracks written on the album. I felt like it had a different feeling and mood to our previous releases and was the catalyst for the shift in tone and themes throughout the album. It’s also the first dave song to only have one vocal take throughout the whole track – normally I would sing it twice through to give a chorus effect. When I suggested singing it a second time, Steve said in his deadpan way, “or you could not double everything,” so we stuck with the one take.” Explains vocalist, Noah Church.

The video was filmed and edited by Noah which showcases him riding his bike in Newcastle. Where You Are follows from singles Ultrahard, Get Smart and Fine!

Slob Stories was recorded in Chicago with none other than Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies), who perfectly captured the band’s raw energy and brain-to-page intensity of Noah’s songwriting. Building off the promise of a string of early EPs, Slob Stories is a fully realised work of emotional scale and scope and shows a different side to Noah’s song writing.

Combining a punk, DIY ethos with heartfelt and honest songs, dave the band are much more than your typical rock band, drawing influences from artists such as You Am I, Built To Spill, Pixies and Custard; introduced to them by their music fanatic, vinyl-collecting parents.

dave the band have performed with some of their biggest influences such as You Am I, British India, Dune Rats, The Hard Aches and Bootleg Rascal as well as playing events such as Gumball, No Worries Festival, Moruya (Touch Sensitive, The Vanns), Raave Tapes, Shut Down, The Argyle House (Good Boy, Kwame) and The Cambridge Hotel’s Boxing Day Party (Dear Seattle, Rackett, Maddy Jane).

Newcastle has seen its fair share of loud rock bands over the years, but few have been as raucous and high energy as dave the band in full flight.

TOBIAHS LEBANESE-AUSTRALIAN ELECTRONIC ARTIST TOBIAHS ANNOUNCES A BANDCAMP EXCLUSIVE RELEASE TO RAISE MONEY FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE RECENT DISASTER IN BEIRUT

Tobiahs has today announced ‘Beirut’, a collection of 3 previously unreleased recordings to be released exclusive to his Bandcamp. All proceeds will go to Lebanese Red Cross to help provide healthcare, shelter, food and medical aid to people affected by the recent disaster in Lebanon. Fans can name their price, providing space to donate what they are able to.
QUOTE FROM TOBIAHS:
This year, I decided to embrace my roots and bring inspiration from the house music scene in Beirut into my own music. For decades there has existed a severely underrated dance culture filled with the most passionate people, incredible clubs, and musicians and producers of the highest calibre. Creating and celebrating like they’re the luckiest people in the world, often under terrible political circumstances. The recent disaster in the city has affected me so strongly, seeing the suffering of my people, family and friends.

Despite my distance I am determined to do something to help the people in the city, with whatever small platform I have. I’ve gathered 3 previously unreleased songs and I’m making them available to you all via Bandcamp. Pay what you can, 100% of the money raised from this is going directly to those affected by this tragedy via the Lebanese Red Cross. We will not be going through any government organisations, your money will be going straight to where it is needed. My people don’t ask for much, years of struggle without a cry for help, but now they need us. Thank you, this means the world to me.

TAMA GUCCI Shares new single ‘Crazy About Me’

by the partae August 14, 2020
written by the partae

Miami artist, model and visionary Tama Gucci shares his latest single ‘Crazy About Me’, accompanied by the official video co-directed by Michael Morales and Rodrigo Alvarez. The track is available to buy and stream on all available platforms via b4 / Remote Control Records.

Fusing hard-hitting electronic beats with warm, emotive vocals, ‘Crazy About Me’ follows previous standout tracks ‘Online’ and ‘I Let You ft. X-Coast’. “Crazy About Me speaks to relationships where you may not see eye to eye but your love is resilient and infinite in spite of that,” he muses. “I wanted to create a safe space for listeners within the song.” The track is accompanied by the hazy blue-hued video which serves a dose of tranquility as it segues from the sun setting on the shore to the NYC skyline, whilst capturing Tama dancing in an intimate setting as he gently croons the line “Just you and me and nobody else”.

A mainstay in the Miami queer underground, 21-year-old Tama Gucci – AKA Kymani Floyd – soon developed a cult online following when a cover of Blueface’s ‘Thotiana’ went viral. Spearheading a new sound with cool R&B sounds paired with club-ready sensibilities, he soon garnered attention from publications like Paper Magazine, FADER and Hunger TV to name a few. It was only a matter of time before the multi-disciplinary artist opened for Christine and The Queens and performed a slot on Caroline Polacheck’s Club Quarantine. One of the most exciting talents to come out of Miami, he continues to push boundaries and reach for the next level.

Having already made his name and earned a loyal following with his unmatched gritty bassline sound, Zero continues to expand his horizons, weaving together the dusky yet invigorating ‘1 More’, featuring the very talented EJ Kitto. The track is based around a 4/4-leaning structure, unlike his previous releases, and the lyrics were written from a raver’s point of view; perfectly encapsulating the feeling of losing yourself amid the haze of tunes, smoke and lasers at the end of the night, before being thrown back into the pumping crowd for one more song.  ‘1 More’ has already been supported by Annie Nightingale on her Annie Nightingale Presents… Radio 1 show, and with further early support landing from Holy Goof, TS7, Skepsis, Notion, Dr. Fresch, Gentlemen's Club’s and of course Zinc himself - this latest cut is another step in Zero’s unstoppable march towards world domination.  Over the last few years, Zero has made his UK Bass stamp on the national and international bass scene, with his music championed by the likes of Chris Lorenzo, Holy Goof, Dr. Fresch, My Nu Leng, Jamie Duggan, Anna Lunoe, Turno, and JOYRYDE. Florian Picasso proved he is one of the finest electronic music artists with this live stream honoring his Picasso heritage

The astonishing show caught the attention of millions of people worldwide

On Tuesday, August 11th, Florian Picasso performed an outstanding show at the Villa Californie in Cannes. The stunning visuals, architectural projections, light show, and pyrotechnics exceeded all expectations, as the villa came to life and delighted not only Picasso’s neighbors on the French Riviera but also millions of people around the world.

WATCH THE SHOW HERE

Spending his time between Geneva and Cannes, the house, which used to belong to his great-grandfather Pablo, is an exceptional place of inspiration for Florian who produces much of his music there. Over 25 people have been working on last night’s massive production for more than 4 months.  15 tonne of gear was brought to the Villa Californie, resulting in one of the most stunning live streams of the year. The unique setting and the light show turned the set into a true piece of art, rightfully honoring the artistic history of the house.

Picasso, who also exclusively premiered many new tracks in this extraordinary one hour set, said “I’m very happy we were able to do something this special here in Cannes. Turning the entire house into a moving piece of art felt like the right way to pay tribute to what this place represents and the history it has. My team and I put a lot of work into this show and the response has been absolutely amazing so far, I can’t wait to let you all know what’s coming next!“.

In case you missed it, or if you want to watch the spectacular show again, the performance can be found here.

About Florian Picasso

Picasso is no stage name; Florian is the great-grandson of the mighty Pablo, adopted by the Picasso family after being born in Vietnam. He’s synonymous with a high-octane style of EDM that focuses on larger-than-life, unrelenting riffs and raw textures and is squarely focused on the dancefloor. Florian Picasso is a powerhouse in the world of dance music and has recently released ‘Like You Do’ ft Gashi & Ally Brooke, ‘Restart Your Heart’ with GRX, and ‘Armageddon’ with Timmy Trumpet.

LUNDØN

by the partae August 13, 2020
written by the partae

Where are you both currently based?

Justin: I’m located in New York City

Jeff: And I’m from Omaha, Nebraska

How did LUNDØN form?

Jeff: LUNDØN was originally a solo project with just Justin at the helm. Justin and I met about a year ago through a mutual friend and at the time I was still going by the artist name Strvylight and we just started talking about doing some work together and that’s how the song “Whoever’s Next” came to be. Shortly after that, Justin asked me to be a part of LUNDØN and make the project a duo and I was instantly on board.

What’s been happening recently and how has your COVID19 experience been?

Jeff: With the current pandemic, we have been trying to be as optimistic as possible. Prior to COVID, life seemed to be going 100 miles an hour and when lockdown hit everything came to a screeching halt. We’ve been making the most of it by using the extra free time to experiment musically, work on some new projects, and use the downtime to take a breather and reflect on what’s important to us and what kind of message and feel we want our music to have.

Your new track ‘Don’t Turn This Car Around’ Feat. LA vocalist is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Justin: Loveless (Justin Cormeau) laid down a killer vocal topline that depicted a personal experience he went through in a previous relationship but did so in a way that we thought was pretty relatable or open to interpretation. We got the vocal stems and there was a bassline that we were just absolutely crazy about. We started working on it and had a bit of inspiration from Tame Impala and wanted a bit of an indie vibe that eventually evolved into a more melodic EDM tone. It was kind of tricky to get the transition between the two styles because we wanted the stylistic change to be something that only happened one time for what I guess what you could call some contrast. We’re really into blending multiple genres of music and we took a big leap with making the song do a 180 at the end to catch the listener off guard, but in a way that hopefully wasn’t jarring.

How did you go about writing ‘Don’t Turn This Car Around’?

Loveless approached us with the song in 2018 but I felt like it needed something more, so it sat on the back burner until recently, when we decided to work it into what it is now. The song is about metaphorically not turning the car around. In life, we face obstacles and despite those obstacles, we need to always be traveling forward no matter how hard it gets. We chose Loveless to sing on the song because we worked with him on our previous track, ‘You & Me,’ and decided to try something different.

What programs/instruments did you use to record/produce?

We primarily use Ableton for all production, as well as guitar for a lot of the live instrumental elements.

How did the collaboration with Loveless come to fruition?

Justin: We worked with Julian previously on our song “You & Me” and liked the way it came out, so we decided to work with him again on “Don’t Turn This Car Around.” Julian and I met in California about 3 years ago and stayed in contact ever since. His vocal style overall is my personal favorite of those we’ve worked with.

Why did you decide to combine pop rock with future bass?

The melodic aspects of “Don’t Turn This Car Around” worked well in both future bass and pop-rock styles so we ran with the idea of, “Well if it works well in both, why not combine them and see what happens.”

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Justin: I just recently got back into a lot of technical guitar work. I’ve been listening to a lot of Avenged Sevenfold and trying to figure out how to play the solos and get my hands back up to speed.

Jeff: Currently at the moment I’ve been listening to a lot of metal, older punk music, and a lot of drum & bass and dubstep

What do you like to do away from music?

Justin: I like to be around people and hang out with my friends, who also give great inspiration for writing music. Since I grew up playing the guitar, I also like to continue practicing my guitar skills and learning different solos from my favorite rock bands in my free time.

Jeff: Away from music, I generally like to just relax, watch movies, maybe go longboarding, or go walk some trails near where I live.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020?

We have more music planned to release later this year, mostly singles that are a bit more on the heavier side under the influence of some dubstep and rock music. We’re really excited about that!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Justin: My favorite food is Italian food or a bacon egg & cheese from the Bodega. The best place to hang out is the beach.

Jeff: Favorite food is Chinese food. Favorite hangout spot is my place as boring as that may sound, but having my own space is definitely relaxing.
