DAVE THE BAND RELEASE THEIR DEBUT ALBUM, SLOB STORIES TODAY WATCH THE VIDEO FOR NEW SINGLE, CAPSULE HEAD TO INSTAGRAM FOR ‘WHICH DAVE ARE YOU?’ FILTER ALBUM LAUNCH SHOW TONIGHT!

“dave the band have delivered a no-frills, DIY masterpiece, positioning themselves at the forefront of the Australian punk world. Next step: world domination.” – Hysteria Magazine
“We’re so proud of the music coming out of Australia, and dave the band is undeniably at the forefront of the sound we love.” – Tone Deaf
“dave the band has undoubtedly put itself on the map with this release and you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to check it out. This is a stellar first album from the lads and they’re only just getting started.” – Wall Of Sound

One of Newcastle’s best kept secrets and exciting 3-piece indie-rock band, dave the band, have released their long-awaited debut album, Slob Stories out now via believe.

Slob Stories was recorded in Chicago with none other than Steve Albini (Nirvana, The Pixies), who perfectly captured the band’s raw energy and brain-to-page intensity of Noah’s songwriting. Building off the promise of a string of early EPs, Slob Stories is a fully realised work of emotional scale and scope and shows a different side to Noah’s song writing.
To celebrate the release, they have released the video for latest single, Capsule. Capsule follows the singles, Ultrahard, Get Smart, Fine! and Where You Are.

“I had the idea for capsule when I heard a friend talking about his trip to Japan where he’d stayed in a capsule hotel. It was written just as winter was ending and I was reflecting on the last few months that had passed. We’ve always been influenced by Cloud Nothings, but this is the track that makes me think of them the most. Gabe and Max are chugging away so hard in the verses that all I need to do is strum each chord once and it feels like the song becomes this living and breathing thing that we are engulfed in when we play it.”Explains vocalist, Noah Church.

So, ‘Which Dave Are You?’. Are you Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters? Or are you Dave Le’aupeppe from Gang of Youths OR are you Dave McCormack from Custard, Dave Brubeck or dave.? Well, head to Instagram and download your dave the band filter and find out yourself. Our friends at Pilerats show you how it’s done here.

Tonight, dave the band will be performing 2 album launch shows at The Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle. Tickets for the second show with Mahalia is sold out, but there are a handful of tickets still available for the all-ages show with Milky Thread.

Combining a punk, DIY ethos with heartfelt and honest songs, dave the band are much more than your typical rock band, drawing influences from artists such as You Am I, Built To Spill, Pixies and Custard; introduced to them by their music fanatic, vinyl-collecting parents.
dave the band have performed with some of their biggest influences such as You Am I, British India, Dune Rats, The Hard Aches and Bootleg Rascal as well as playing events such as Gumball, No Worries Festival, Moruya (Touch Sensitive, The Vanns), Raave Tapes, Shut Down, The Argyle House (Good Boy, Kwame) and The Cambridge Hotel’s Boxing Day Party (Dear Seattle, Rackett, Maddy Jane).

Newcastle has seen its fair share of loud rock bands over the years, but few have been as raucous and high energy as dave the band in full flight.

TOTTY REMINISCE ABOUT TOURING ON NEW SINGLE ‘SAME BED’ + ANNOUNCE ‘GARDEN’ EP RELEASE

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

“…this follow up EP is TOTTY in full bloom. The Wollongong grunge trio are a life raft for those who prefer their contemplation of restlessness and detachment to be loud and under-polished.” – Rolling Stone Australia

In an ode to a life of touring that once was, TOTTY today reveal their new singe and video ‘Same Bed’, a third glimpse into their rescheduled ‘Garden’ EP which will surface on November 6th via Ratbag Records/BMG. PRESAVE HERE.

‘Same Bed’ speaks to the monotony of touring and travelling from state to state to sleep in what seems like the same hotels, something that the band now look back on fondly. “Same bed is about life on the road, touring from show to show. When you’re traveling every hotel room feels the same and often you’ll drive all through the night to get to the next venue to do it all again.” Singer Kel says, she continues “The song was written last year before COVID with our previous bass player Max. It’s been sad to reflect on that time while in lock down but the song really makes me happy to have experienced it all with some amazing people. I really hope we get to do those tours again soon but it’s so important to stay safe in the mean time.”

Due to the unravelling of 2020 their hotly awaited EP release is a little later than planned and a little lite on the live touring TOTTY love so much but most importantly it’s full of good times, a sentiment summed up by the Rolling Stone review.

Last year the Wollongong shed-rock three piece lifted the lid on the first single from the EP in ‘Lucky’ which immediately resonated with radio. It was swiftly added to rotation at triple j and sat in their Top 50 Most Played for a month, ultimately reaching #13. They then completed their own headline tour full of sold out dates, and fronted the camera for an Aus Music Month shoot with General Pants. The second offering came at the end of last month with the release of ‘Fairies’, a loud and more grungier track showing off their raucous energy.

Never ones to shy away from the tour van, TOTTY spent the start of 2020 on a national tour with Dune Rats, Ruby Fields and Dear Seattle and have played alongside names like SKEGGS, Hockey Dad and Slowly Slowly as well as graced the festival stages of Falls Festival, Yours & Owls, Fairgrounds, Farmer and the Owl and Grow Your Own and they can’t wait to get back out to those same beds soon.

CROCODYLUS DROP NEW SINGLE ‘SOCIAL CLIMBER’

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

‘Sydney’s Crocodylus are back and they’ve bought a fresh new single with ‘em called “Social Climber”, out today via Bargain Bin Records.

A jangly garage rock anthem-in-waiting, “Social Climber” shows off Crocodylus at their most dynamic, with the trio thriving within the light and the shade, as the whisper-quiet bits pave the way for the parts so loud they’ll rattle your windows. It’s also Crocodylus’ most poignant song yet, with singer Josh Williams’ refrain of ‘I tried so hard’ a particular point of emotional resonance right before an immense, cathartic breakdown. The single had its first spin last night on triple j’s Home & Hosed and can be heard below.

Frontman Josh Williams explains: “This song’s about being in a relationship with someone who’s climbing the non existent social ladder. It’s about trying to make the relationship work but it all becomes too much. Manipulation and jealousy comes into play as well as some 12 string and organ action. The song was written a few years ago and it’s sick to see it finally recorded with a full band.”

“Social Climber” arrives after a massive start to 2020. Riding high after the release of their 2019 EP, Enjoy, which saw the band tour across Europe with everyone’s favourite ratbags The Chats and culminated with a string of sold out headline shows in Melbourne, Adelaide and their hometown of the Northern Beaches, everything was coming up Crocs until, well, we all know how the story of this year goes… It’s all good though, in the past month Crocodylus slayed some socially distanced live shows in Sydney and Wollongong, with the former’s tickets completely snapped up in just 12 hours.

And in other good news, the band have used their downtime wisely to work on their forthcoming debut album, slated for release in 2021. If you’re not on-board yet, it’s not too late – we saved you a seat.

Where are you currently based? West Leederville in Perth. I have a small home studio where I write and record and the band rehearse there.  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? Well we’ve just started to rehearse more because shows are happening again over here so we’ve just been dusting off the saddles. The covid thing didn’t really affect me that much because I don’t really have a life anyway. I’m always in my music room. Business as usual really.  Your new single 'The Reason' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The funny thing is when you release a song it takes ages to get to that point and was usually written years ago. So I don’t recall what influenced that particular song. I don’t think it would have been anything specific.  How did you go about writing the track? I think I had the main synth hook and chord progression laying around for a little while and then I kinda had a breakthrough with the vocal delivery and then it all just flowed after that. I don’t remember it being a hard song to work out.  Where and when did you record and who with? It was recorded at the start of the year at Blackbird Studios with Dave Parkin. I also recorded some parts at my place.  What programs/equipment did you use? I use Logic. So I will usually have a demo done and then we go into the studio and redo some, or all of it again. I programmed the drum beat you hear at the start in Logic. Then Jamie came in and laid down the live drums. I think the synths were combination of soft synths and a Roland Juno. I used my Telecaster guitar but I can’t remember the amp we used. We use all sorts of equipment I can’t keep track.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Bob Dylan  What do you like to do away from music? I like to play tennis  What's planned for 2020?  More live shows. We will have a video for The Reason coming out soon that we’ve been recording at my place also. I think we might go back into the studio before the end of the year to record more songs that will probably come out in two years time where I get asked questions about them that I can’t remember the answers for. I have a Christmas song that I’ve had around for a long time that I wanna record. Maybe get around to doing that.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Probably Mexican food. The Bird which is a small live music venue where Emma works.  https://open.spotify.com/artist/06dE3zZujjtXjLRhXEVYsx?si=3FLbRV9WQxyN46xegPy56g https://www.instagram.com/bigorangetheband/ https://www.facebook.com/bigorangeband.perth/ https://bigorange.bandcamp.com/ https://twitter.com/wearebigorange

BIG ORANGE RELEASE BRAND NEW SINGLE ‘THE REASON’

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, alt-rock group Big Orange return with their new single, ‘The Reason‘.

The brainchild of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Davis, they are heavily influenced by the classics such as Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. The pop craftsmanship of Daniel’s songwriting is both refreshing and captivating. Following their July release ‘Apocketlipstick’, Big Orange follow up with their new track ‘The Reason’, delivers an upbeat vibe with underlying tones of sadness.

The track’s theme explores addictive love and the emotional battle within.

“It’s a paradox. The source of joy and the source of pain- it’s bittersweet”, says Daniel.

Their roots to hometown Harvey in the south-west of WA inspired the band name and is where they originally formed. Daniel’s vocals and guitar is complemented by life-long friends Tom Garvey on bass, Emma Adams on synths and percussion, and Jamie Gallacher on drums.

The band has maintained a loyal following since inception and has played alongside legends, Big Country, Jebediah and Ash. With extensive national airplay on FBI Radio and Double J, the group has also had regular features in RTRFM’s Sound Selection which landed them in the station’s Top 50 Most Played Tracks of 2018. Big Orange has been featured in Spotify’s ‘Chords & Cardigans’ Playlist and recently been featured in Bandcamp’s ‘New and Notable’ List.

‘The Reason’ is out NOW.

JAZZPARTY Sign to Remote Control Release Live EP Live At The Evelyn Hotel, “It’s Monday Night Somewhere”

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

Remote Control Records is thrilled to announce the signing of Melbourne’s cult outfit JAZZPARTY. To celebrate the signing, the band have released a live EP It’s Monday Night Somewhere which reminds us live music in Australia is truly unique, necessary and irreplaceable.

The EP features a handful of tracks collected over five years of JAZZPARTY’s infamous Monday Night residencies recorded via Open Live at The Evelyn Hotel.

Picture this, a seemingly quiet Monday night is turned on its head when you walk through the doors of Melbourne music hot spot The Evelyn Hotel. It’s sweaty, packed and you can hear people laughing and shouting, see them drinking and dancing. You can taste the cold beer in these soaked recordings and feel the heat of bodies packed in close. Unrehearsed, slightly unhinged but free to explore and push, this is the band in their element. Their happiest place.

“We decided to release these even though they are imperfect, maybe even a little cringe worthy for us at times” says Loretta Miller, JAZZPARTY’s enigmatic front woman. “This release is about the energy that’s created on these nights, that have allowed us to grow our music naturally in front of an audience. There are times the band will have never heard a tune before and Darcy (Band Leader, Saxophone) will write out a last minute chart and direct and we’ll all just see what happens. It’s risky but it’s the most free and excited I ever feel on stage.”

Sometimes the show is loose, sometimes a soaring triumph and the band thrive on each other’s playful, rowdy, good time energy. The audience is very much the eighth or ninth member of the band because no one can be sure how many players are actually on the stage at a JAZZPARTY gig. In their time as a band JAZZPARTY have brought their euphoric performance to Golden Plains, WOMADelaide, Wave Rock Weekender, Melbourne International Jazz Festival and supported the likes of Lee Fields, Hot 8 Brass Band & Lake Street Dive.

The live recordings feature some of Melbourne’s greatest players and musical guests aplenty, including Harry James Angus, Hue Blanes, Tracey Miller (Loretta’s mother) and Nick Martyn (Las Mar).

JAZZPARTY is Loretta Miller (Vocals), Gideon Preiss (Piano), Donnie Stewart (Trombone and Trumpet), Dom Hede (Drums), Jules Pascoe (Double Bass), Darcy McNulty (Saxophone), Grant Arthur (Trombone) and Eamon McNellis (Trumpet).

Life Without Andy

Western Sydney via Boston artist Raj Mahal today shares his latest track, ‘Glimpse (ft. Dante.Knows)’, the lead single unleashed from his forthcoming EP RAW DAWG. Listen HERE.

For the Boston born rapper, re-locating to Australia was a decision made to find himself both emotionally and musically. Inspired by his uncles, key members of Boston’s small hip hop scene, Raj Mahal began rapping as a teenager, when pursuing a career in football was his primary focus. Before long, with his family’s influence and an unsuspecting introduction to a producer several oceans away, Mahal put football on the bench and took the plunge. No longer holding back with his drone laced blows, Mahal hopes to craft a lane for hip hop’s formidable storytelling origins to return to the local spotlight.

Produced by Domba, his longtime collaborator and close friend, ‘Glimpse’ is designed to hit the most primal receptors of your brain and body. Melding the experimental electronic stylings of Danny Brown and A$AP Ferg with the hardened, menacing lyrical prowess of Jay Electronica and Chief Keef, the chilly, minimalist production of ‘Glimpse’ pairs a glitching melody with the blown-out bass of a Kenny Beats track and Raj’s deep, guttural rumble of a voice.

Raj Mahal says “Glimpse is raw and nasty, filled with authentic Carribean flavor that influenced my entire childhood, being that my parents are from Haiti and Jamaica. If you grew up as a West Indian in Boston or New York, you’ll know what I’m talking about. If this is what “commercial” Raj Mahal is capable of, then it’s not looking good for these other rappers.”

‘Glimpse’ is a fittingly stark insight into the mental state that birthed the jagged and abrasive RAW DAWG EP, which is set to be the artist’s first major release since 2017’s full-length project, Neva Safe, following on from a string of standalone singles that has seen his stock skyrocket in his adopted country’s hip hop scene. In between then and now, Mahal has collaborated with the likes of Triple One, Nerve, Dro Carey, Yibby and more, has performed as one quarter of Savour the Rations, his group with Gibrillah and Domba, and has opened for Wiley, YG and Smokepurpp on their Australian tours. With the release of RAW DAWG, Raj Mahal promises zero restraint, and has no hesitation making sure you won’t forget it.

“It’s through this juxtaposition between the trio’s vibrant melodies and vulnerable lyricism that they demonstrate what a wonderfully important band they are.“
– Rock Sound (UK)

Added to Apple Music playlists ‘Breaking Rock’ and ‘New in Alternative’

Emo/pop-rock band Happy. have just revealed their latest single ‘Liarliar‘ off their sophomore album ‘Imposter Syndrome‘ – due October 30.

“Each song on our new record ‘Imposter Syndrome’ is a reflection of our experience with it as musicians over the last few years,” explains vocalist/guitarist, Tate Logan. “This includes some of the greatest moments of our entire lives, while others reflect struggle and extreme lows. ‘Liarliar’ is the most honest and straightforward depiction of my experience with depression. We chose to express this visually by breaking the fourth wall between us and our fans. This video is a representation of a therapy session, something I was once extremely familiar with that ultimately saved my life.”

‘Liarliar’ is the third single, following ‘A Cure for Wellness‘ and ‘Sick is the New Sane‘, from the band’s forthcoming new album, ‘Imposter Syndrome’, due out on October 30 via Rude Records. Produced by Marc McClusky (Weezer, Motion City Soundtrack, The Front Bottoms), the album is a narrative on the band’s personal experience with the effects of Imposter Syndrome. They explain, “From the lows of depression, anxiety, and addiction, to the highs of traveling, making friends and living the dream, this record is our everlasting chase for ‘success.’” The album is available for pre-order here: https://happy.lnk.to/impostersyndrome.

Happy. are Tate Logan (vocals), Sean Bowick (drums) and John Palmer (guitar). Formed in 2016 in Columbia, SC, the group launched with their 4-song EP, ‘The Endless Bummer‘, which was later released on tapes through Ohio’s Real Life Cassette Girls Records. Following this release, Happy. spent the next year dissecting their sound and writing new songs, creating music that promotes positivity, personal growth, and self-defined happiness. The result was their 2018 debut full-length album, ‘Cult Classic‘, which was produced by Cartel’s Will Pugh. Now, they are gearing up for the release of their aforementioned sophomore album ‘Imposter Syndrome’, due out on October 30 via Rude Records.

‘Liarliar’ is available worldwide now through Rude Records

Melbourne’s On Diamond reveal psychedelic new single ‘Candle’– an ominous reflection examining the dangers that present themselves when it comes to ugly, covered up truths

by the partae September 4, 2020
written by the partae

“A stunning collection of artistically nuanced songs.. On Diamond’s ability to match themes with music becomes more pertinent with each listen.”
★★★★ — Nick Crameri, Sungenre

“This band manages to do something rare these days which is to create/craft a unique sound.. If you want some pointers then it can be described as Murray Street era Sonic Youth in terms of avant rock guitar elements combined with Sandy Denny like vocalese, and in respect of contemporary Aussie music the nearest comparison would be Tropical Fuck Storm, or that band’s predecessors The Drones.”
— Bob Osborne, Aural Delights (UK)

Fearlessly traversing a multitude of genres while probing the deeper parts of the human psyche, Melbourne’s On Diamond return with intriguing new single ‘Candle’. The band broke barriers with their eponymous 2019 debut, featuring the head-turning singles ‘How’, ‘Poison Blood’, and ‘Light’; their genre-defying sound garnering instant success. Now, the beloved quintet are back and excited to reveal their next alt-pop oddity in the introspective mantra that is ‘Candle’.

Out today via Eastmint Records, ‘Candle’ is the first we’ve heard from the band since their critically acclaimed self-titled album earned nominations for The Australian Music Prize and Music Victoria Awards’ Best Album and landed Album Of The Week on RRR, PBS and 4ZZZ. Without skipping a beat, the band’s new single continues with the same impressive momentum, opening with an eerie atmospheric loftiness before breaking into a punchy crescendo of clanging cymbals, psychedelic, reverb-drenched guitar riffs and densely layered ethereal vocals.

“A truth candle is a magic candle fashioned by the mystics in The Forgotten Realms – a world in Dungeons and Dragons. It acts as a truth serum and all who fall under its power are compelled to tell the truth. This song recalls a moment in my late teens when I learned a painful familial truth. It was extremely jarring but at the same time it revealed the root of a darkness I’d felt my entire life, which in a strange way brought a sense of relief. The song is also a reflection on recognising the ugly, covered up truths present in our society and how we decide to respond to and engage with these truths.” — Lisa Salvo, On Diamond

Comprising an all-star line-up featuring members of Jaala, Grand Salvo and Jazz Party, On Diamond presents an interactive group dynamic both in the studio and on stage. Led by Lisa Salvo with bandmates Scott McConnachie (guitar), Hannah Cameron (guitar/vox), Maria Moles (drums), and Jules Pascoe (bass), On Diamond’s unique and now-quintessential sound includes hints of rock, noise, alt-pop, folk and improvised music, bonded by freedom of expression and experimentalism. ‘Candle’ serves as another example of On Diamond’s fortitude, and their resolve to produce music that is both personal and meaningful to them, and liberating in the many different sounds they work within. As a result, they continue to make their mark on Australian music — more bold and daring than ever.

DIY Australian indie-pop artist RACKETT drops new electronic single ‘Everywhere You’re Not’ featuring NY rapper Dante Knows, co-written, produced and mixed by Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale, Mia Rodriguez), and mastered by Andrew Edgeston (Amy Shark, Tia Gostelow).

Beat driven and bass-heavy, the single punches into a huge dance drop out of a euphoric, stripped back chorus. Featuring 16 bars of rap by NY born, SYD based rapper, Dante Knows, the single is another reveal of what RACKETT fans can expect from her debut mini-album due for release in late November 2020.

“‘Everywhere You’re Not’ is about freedom and liberation from an ex-lover. It’s a realisation that the world is a big place full opportunities and the awakening of possibilities from the limitations of staying in one place, with one person. As a massive Dante Knows fan I was thrilled to have him on the single, I saw him perform in Sydney in late 2019 and have been following his music ever since. I think he’s one of the most talented artists I’ve discovered and as the first feature I’ve ever released, it’s a big moment for me” – RACKETT

For the music video RACKETT teamed up with up and coming Sydney director, Murli. Shot at Archie’s Brother Arcade and Tokyo Sing Song in Sydney, the music video was inspired by ASAP Rocky’s L$D. Styled and with creative direction by RACKETT,  the Sydney artist once again flexes her DIY approach and produces an acid-washed, neon popping feast for the eyes.

RACKETT’s single launch presented by BLOOM SOLD OUT with a second show just announced.

PLANTS AND ANIMALS Share new single ‘Le Queens’ New album The Jungle out October 23

by the partae September 3, 2020
written by the partae

Today, Plants and Animals are releasing a brand new single and video for ‘Le Queens’. A French song featuring Adèle Trottier-Rivard on vocals, the theme was inspired by an evening spent in Queens, NY. The new song and video are premiering this morning via Consequence of Sound, alongside an Origins feature about the track, click here to read. The Jungle, their fifth studio album, is set to be released October 23rd via Secret City Records / Remote Control.

The band shares the inspiration behind the song: “Woody got this machine that makes a drum kit play samples and he didn’t know how to use it. But he chopped up some of Warren’s guitar chords and played them with his bass drum anyway. So it all ended up as this wobbly, dreamy jam that we all got attached to. Nic wrote most of the lyrics in the lineup at Home Depot. They’re about an evening in Queens, dancing among strangers, time moving backwards in slow motion and falling in love.”

The music video, directed by Yann-Manuel Hernandez, features Quebec’s acclaimed singer-songwriter Michel Rivard. The director shares the creative process and context of this unexpected moment: “Le Queens is a tribute to the Quebec cinema of the 60s and 70s, to the Nouvelle Vague, to Groulx, to Quebec waking up, to the love that persists in spite of everything, to life’s free spirit and its craziness. The band got totally on board and we even managed to create a little show in an alleyway in Montreal to capture documentary moments of life. This atypical side is also reflected in the idea of adding an outro to the music video with Michel Rivard, founder of Beau Dommage, who re-enacts an emblematic scene from the Nouvelle Vague: Rivard plays Devos, Spicer plays Belmondo.”

The Jungle starts with electronic drums that sound like insects at night. A whole universe comes alive in the dark. It’s beautiful, complex and unsettling. Systematic and chaotic. All instinct, no plan. Voices taunt, “yeah, yeah, yeah”. This tangled time in which we find ourselves is reflected back in shadows.

Every song is such a landscape. The first one grinds to a halt and you become a kid looking out a car window at the moon, wondering how it’s still on your tail as you speed past a steady blur of trees. You watch a house go up in a yellow strobe that echoes the disco weirdness of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and David Bowie. You get pummeled by a rhythm then set free by a sudden change of scenery—the wind stops, clarity returns. You’re under a streetlight in Queens, soft focus, slow motion, falling in love. You speak French now too, in case you didn’t already. Bienvenue.

These are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. There’s one song Nic sings to his teenage son who was dealing with climate change anxiety and drifting into uncharted independence. The band carries it out slowly together into a sweet blue horizon. Warren wrote the words to another shortly after losing his father. It’s about the things we inherit not necessarily being the things we want. In a broader sense, that’s where a lot of people find themselves right now.

Plants and Animals are an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue. The band has developed a varied cult following ever since, built on the shoulders of their self-produced records and their intense live shows. Parc Avenue was a critically acclaimed record (Pitchfork 8/10) released during the famous Montreal-is-the-new-Seattle music moment. This release set Plants and Animals as an incredible live force, a powerful songwriting trio and opened doors for them to tour the world many times over with people like Portugal. The Man, Gnarls Barkley and more. Three other releases followed and kept the band’s status up high: La La Land (2010) “they’re complicated and gorgeous [songs] and feel as innate as desire itself.” (Paste Magazine), The End of That (2012) “vibrant, constantly rewarding” (Spin) and Waltzed in from the Rumbling (2016) “… the strike rate is remarkably high” ★★★★ (Q Magazine). The band was shortlisted (2008) and longlisted (2010) for the Polaris Music Prize and received multiple Juno Awards and ADISQ Awards nominations over the years.

Your Girl Pho releases new single ‘Surrender’ + music video

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

“Your Girl Pho has her own thing going on and it’s a damn good thing if you ask me” – Declan Byrne, triple j

“Welcome Your Girl Pho as she joins the upper echelon of Western Australian talent, and commences her journey to becoming a fully-fledged national name” – Pilerats

“An extremely impressive cross-genre offering that will leave you gobsmacked” – Acid Stag

“Your Girl Pho’s impressive vocal skills and captivating energy make for an entertaining track and should lead to unforgettable live performances” – EARMILK

Perth based artist Your Girl Pho releases ‘Surrender’ – her first single since signing with Melbourne tastemaker label Daily Nightly. Its accompanying music video has also been released today.

Switching it up from her signature electro-pop energy, ‘Surrender’ shows a softer side of Your Girl Pho, stripping her sound down to a lo-fi, neo-soul setting with an infusion of 90s hip-hop.

“This is an ode for the people who let love go and who won’t surrender to another. I’m singing to a person who has had their walls up, and holds a strong front – having a past of not letting anyone in,” says Phoebe on the track.

However laxed the vibes on Surrender, Pho’s signature sass and contemporary approach to lyricism isn’t wasted. Beginning a verse with ‘so….um’, a common phrase she uses in her songwriting that snaps her back to reality and lets the listener know she’s about to speak her truth.

Your Girl Pho has a ‘je ne sais quoi’ and a contagious vibrancy that is exactly what we all need in 2020.

BIO

Your Girl Pho is the vivacious on stage persona of Perth based vocalist/producer Phoebe Gunson. In a short time she racked up a slew of coveted support slots with the likes of Post Malone, The Avalanches, E^ST, Kllo, Alice Ivy & spots on acclaimed festivals Groovin’ The Moo, Falls Festival, Laneway, Listen Out, FOMO, Festival Vaiven (Mexico), Music Matters (Singapore), & in 2019 performed her first North American shows when she appeared on the prestigious Canadian Music Week lineup.

Pho is known for her big vocal range, high energy and live looping during shows. A dynamic young artist that bounces with ease across genres, ranging from somber, nostalgic R&B to bright, colourful electro-pop that will have you dancing in your seat. The power, sass and closeness of Pho’s voice is bigger than the limitations of genre, and in 2019 Acid Stag acknowledged her ability to experiment with her sound, referring to her single ‘Don’t Wanna’ as an “extremely impressive cross-genre offering that will leave you gobsmacked.” The crown jewel in her fizzing, elasticated blend of genres, Pho’s “soulful vocals” (NYLON) have enjoyed airplay with triple j, Beats 1, FBi Radio, RTRFM, 4ZZZ and more – via her own work as well as collaborations with electronic producers Palais, Tayrell and Ukiyo.

Often backed by her 4-piece band, consisting of drums & two saxophones, Pho’s warm, dynamic vocals and playful attitude certainly command the room. Acknowledgement of her enthralling live show was received in 2019 when she won the West Australian Music award for ‘Best Live Electronic Act’. Following on from a huge year in 2019 which included acclaimed releases ‘Five-Thirty PM’ and ‘Don’t Wanna’, which sat at #1 in the AMRAP metro download charts Nationally, it’s no surprise she was snapped up by Untitled Group’s tastemaker label Daily Nightly in June of 2020. The tail end of this year sees Pho pen new music & perform shows in her home state of Western Australia.

Gadigal/Sydney based group GAUCI today share their new single ‘Heartbeat’. Premiered via Home and Hosed on triple j, the trio also announce the release of their anticipated self-titled debut EP, out this October 16. Listen to ‘Heartbeat’ HERE.

Patiently working hard over the last twelve months honing their craft, GAUCI return with their most confident release to date. Where ‘To Save A Moment’ reflects on desperation and second chances, ‘Heartbeat’ is it’s prologue, soundtracking the unnerving pressure, mounted in the moments before declaring your feelings to someone. Multiple harmonies, whispers and autotune vocals culminate in a chorus of intoxicating glee. Complete with visualiser creatively directed by Tom Vanderzeil with type by Ana Gabrielle. Watch HERE.

         GAUCI – ‘Heartbeat‘ (Visualiser)

GAUCI share: “Heartbeat is about those intimate moments of exchanged whispers before confessing your unconditional love. It’s the feeling of being in a packed room unable to pay attention to anyone except the person you want to leave with.” Completing the release is a visualiser creatively directed by Tom Vanderzeil and Ana Gabrielle.

With each release Antonia and David Gauci and Felix Lush delve deeper into their textured sphere of sentimental electro, packaging inimitable pop smarts inside a tastefully nostalgic exterior. Their unique brand of sweeping, 80’s synth-pop reminiscent of Future Islands and Chromatics, meets the soaring euphoria of CHVRCHES and the crying-on-the-dancefloor release of Robyn, has built the group a cult following.

Locally championed by FBi Radio, Noisey, RUSSH Magazine and more inbetween performing at sold out hometown shows, GAUCI‘s danceable live show toured Australia’s east coast earlier this year, following appearances supporting Alice Ivy, Hatchie, Parcels, G Flip, Wafia and others; plus festivals Dark Mofo, BIGSOUND, Secret Garden and soon alongside Tones And I, BENEE,  DMA’S and more at Yours & Owls Festival.

The group’s immaculate production, palpably analogue with a contemporary, widescreen definition, helps them pull this out-of-time balancing act off both live and throughout their self-titled debut. Joining ‘Heartbeat‘ and the cinematic synths and 808s of ‘To Save A Moment‘, and ‘Paradise‘ includes live favourite ‘Anxious‘ and the nineties rom-com dowsed ‘November‘. Now with their forthcoming debut EP, GAUCI are ready to welcome us into their world and show their mastery over their craft.

‘Heartbeat by GAUCI is out now, buy/stream it here.

This powerful track is a fabulously crafted affair providing an intense workout that hurls a classic breakbeat into an electronic framework with uplifting melodies and life-affirming piano chords. Sailor & I’s sultry vocals are nothing short of stunning, married with a production that works to unveil a lyrical masterpiece. This is a standout release for the fledgling METAPHYSICAL label and marks the beginning of what is sure to be a fruitful creative relationship with Sailor & I which will peak with the full length album in December 2020.
