NEW VIDEO: Immigrant Union remind us of the transformative power of daydreaming in new video for their latest single ‘Ahmed’ of recent album JUDAS

by the partae September 28, 2020
written by the partae

“The latest single from their third album, ‘Ahmed’ sees Immigrant Union once again prove their worth as leaders of the Melbourne music scene.”
– Rolling Stone

“A rollercoastering collection of folk infused psychedelia that certainly won’t betray your high expectations of the band.” – Francis Tait, Trouble Juice

“It is an excellent album. I mean a properly excellent album, full of twangy psychedelia, slow burning jams, urgent surfy guitars and hypnotic, slinky grooves.” – The Mad Mackerel (UK)

Off the back of their recently released and well-loved third album JUDAS, Australian-American outfit Immigrant Union are pleased to reveal a new video for their standout single ‘Ahmed’. Recorded in Melbourne and mixed in Portland, Oregon, JUDAS showcases Immigrant Union’s signature Americana elements with psych-rock in their most explorative sound yet. Focus single ‘Ahmed’ is driven by a groovy bassline beneath sharp lyricism, distorted guitar riffs and toe-tapping percussion, creating the perfect soundtrack for director and long time friend, Alexander Francis to work his magic.

“Ahmed is the latest single from our new album JUDAS. To help bring the single to life we collaborated with director and long time friend, Alexander Francis. Francis wrote up a killer treatment for the video that we loved immediately. He took our initial video idea of commentary on the trap of missing moments due to being submerged in the bullshit of one’s phone and extended on that beautifully. Ahmed, lyrically tells the story of a refugee trying to make their way to London. It also comments on ignorance surrounding the plights of refugees. Ahmed is a journey and Francis was able to take that journey and spin it into a journey of his own all the while allowing the themes of the song to breathe through his new creation.”
– Bob Harrow, Immigrant Union

Featuring The Dandy Warhols’ Brent DeBoer and boasting Aussie indie rock icon Courtney Barnett and her bandmates as former members, Immigrant Union are a local band with international rock royalty heritage. JUDAS is the first record to feature relative newcomers Ben Street (bass) and Paddy McGrath-Lester (drums) who join founding members Brent DeBoer, Bob Harrow and Peter Lubulwa in their 10+ year reign of Melbourne’s world-class psych underground.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Melbourne Covid experience been so far?

It’s been a tough one for everyone, we’ve definitely had a tough time in Melbourne recently with the strict and extensive lockdown. It’s good to see cases dropping though and there’s seems to be a light at the end of a long tunnel which is good!

How did you first start playing music?

I originally started playing guitar and writing songs when I was 13 and it all started from there, I was mainly obsessed with rock music and played in noisy bands for many years, then slowly my music tastes became more eclectic and my writing evolved in to a more electronic direction.

You’ve just released two singles ‘Air’ & ‘Illuminate’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Both of these tracks were written during lockdown and I think this definitely influenced the mood of the tracks, they both have melancholic feel and slightly darker undertones than I’ve written for a while. I have definitely been craving the outside world and missing the freedom I usually have and that has definitely influenced the feeling in these tracks.

How does your creative process take place?

Normally it starts with experimenting, I might loop a simple beat and then start jamming on a synth or guitar over the top until something excites me, then it’s like completing a puzzle, gradually building and adding layers until I find a balance that feels right. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ method I find but often when I’m not feeling too pressured I find I can come up with my best ideas.

Where and when did you record/produce and who with?

I have a home studio set up in my flat where I record, produce and mix everything.

What programs/instruments did you use?

I use Ableton and for these tracks I used a mix of my Korg Minilogue, Moog Minitaur, soft synths, electric guitar, field recordings and samples I created.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

This week I’ve been enjoying listening to Washed Out, Zola Blood, Tourist and Kaytranada.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to travel and explore new places / other cultures, something which I’ve really missed this year. I’m also a designer, so I love creating new visuals and working with other artists to bring their ideas to life. Other than that I like to try and keep fit, I enjoy cycling and swimming, I grew up by the seaside so any chance I have to jump in the sea… I’m in there!

What do you have planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

I have a 2 remixes I’ve done for other artists coming soon, as well as 2 collaborative tracks made with Koresma. Then in Dec / Jan I have a new EP coming out, which is a collection of ambient tracks – so it’s a little bit different to my usual releases but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for while. Then early next year I also plan to release a new full length album, that’s the main project I’m currently focusing on. I’ve written so many tracks this year and I’m currently refining them and working out how it will all work as an album, I’m really excited about how it’s sounding so far.

Where can we hear your music?

Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, YouTube and all the usual places.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love sushi. Also anything spicy pretty much!

Place to hang out – any sunny beer garden with friends would be a dream right now!

Love Drunk Hearts

by the partae September 28, 2020
written by the partae

What is your name and role within Love Drunk Hearts?

Aaron Ikin – Main songwriter, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

Where are you currently based?

The Northern Beaches of Sydney.

How did you first start playing music?

I had always had an inclination for poetry growing up and an ear for good music, but it wasn’t till I lost my dad at 21 to Motor Neuron Disease I taught myself guitar, singing and songwriting. I decided at that point music is twofold – great for self-expression but also a gift to someone else.

How did Love Drunk Hearts form?

There was a warehouse in Brookvale on the Northern Beaches which was a bit of a hub for a lot of musicians and bands. Some features included an Elvis picture on the wall and a bike hanging from the ceiling. Benny Bryant (Bass) had auditioned Chris Falkland (Lead Guitar) to play in his old band Bec and Ben and invited Chris along to a party at the warehouse. Aaron was there with some pretty raw and undefined songs and hit it off with Chris over ‘Rock The Casbah’. Michael Brown (Drums) had also played with Benny in his old band so we asked if he wanted to jump on board. It clicked.

Your new single ‘Those Boys’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound has a definite 90’s feel in both guitar and melody. I really love the Britpop songwriting. Oscar Dawson of HOLY HOLY produced the track and had such great input on the song sonically and structurally.

How did you go about writing the track?

Initially I had come up with the verse and chorus melody over 2 chords. I sang this in practise, and everyone immediately clicked with it. Chris had been working on his own song called Ghost Town which had an eye worm riff like the 90’s. I couldn’t sing Chris’s melody as it was too high so we decide to marry the 2 songs together and it worked a treat. Brought the song to life and a great example of all our heads working together. We then took it into the studio with Oscar and he added a whole another level of knowledge, experience and flair!

Where and when did you record/produce and who with?

In Melbourne at Aviary Studios with Oscar Dawson. That was April last year. We had a blast.

How did you approach the recording process?

We came at it from a live feel. We all got in the room and tracked live. After 3 or 4 takes we would escape to the NASA control room and pick the best parts. Once the bed of the track was done we recorded the vocals and worked on extra guitar parts.

How did the concept for the music video come together?

The inspiration for the video came from the title of the song (i.e. ‘Those Boys’). It along with the lyrics tend to ignite ideas that sometimes many men or boys can get lost in their own world of interest or passion. The 1978 BMX footage (that we were so fortunate to use) was a perfect vehicle for this, showing all the men passionately supporting each other, when people not part of this scene might not find it interesting/impressive at all.

Who did you work with to create the music video?

It was in house. Brownie created and edited the video.

What do you like to do away from music?

Everyone in the band surfs which is great for writing sessions by the coast. Michael likes his woodwork. Ben and Chris have an unhealthy obsession with golf. Aaron likes to run half marathons and perform yoga stretches.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The new Taylor Swift album is great. I believe the guitarist from The National helped with the songwriting. I’ve been listening to some classic dance floor anthems like Praise You and Music Sounds Better With You. Love the idea of those circular melodies. It’s melody economy.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

Another track to release for summer. We’re currently putting the final touches on a new song, set to be released real soon and also getting ready to film some draft ideas for the video this week.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’d have to say a burrito with chips. California style with a beer. The best every time. I love hanging out in Manly by the beach. Nothing better. Home in Freshwater isn’t too bad either.

HOLLIS PARKER – ‘NEWSCAPSIM’
OUT NOW

Pure House from an emerging name is rare – the kind of sound that you would expect to hear from the greats, Masters at Work, Dennis Ferrer, Honey Dijon, Kerri Chandler, CJ Mackintosh…  This is the authentic real deal from Hollis Parker and his new album Newscapism. He is a unique DJ who crafts his productions with a touch of the old-school NYC production style with added hip hop feel and jazz fusion style, but with a totally contemporary and fresh approach, effortlessly holding his own against the above greats and an artist to take note of.

New York (Queens) born and London based, his roots really shine through with regards to his production style.  First turning heads with his 2014 ‘Sunshine’, edit of Roy Ayres dreamy classic ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’ setting a standard, he then released further vinyl only house E.Ps on his own co-owned imprint SoSure Music. Soon after, he cemented himself into the scene with his first critically acclaimed album ‘Last Raw Era’ (2016) a work full of sub-bass and sass and establishing his ongoing style.

The Last Raw Era was an album inspired by his time in NYC, a musical diary of his feelings and emotions after a breakup, with the songs reflecting exactly how he felt; documenting particular moments in time for him. Punctuated with clips and samples from film and constructed in a way many hip-hop artists would present their work.

His new album Newscapism is produced in the same way, a natural extension of his last album, continuing the story, reflecting his final 24 hours in the city and his move away to a new life. The tracks individually examining what was holding him there and why he had to move away. Continuing the narrative, naturally bringing you to the next chapter in his life with a new city, new loves and new adventures.

Using samples to create a collage of different feels and structures in his tracks like ‘Can’t Let Go’ exhibiting the emotion of a reluctance to leave, full of energy, pace and floating piano keys and a driving kick, house production at its finest.  With diverse tempo’s and feels featuring throughout ‘The Way You’re Making Me Feel’ is slightly low slung but still dreamy in its feel.  Moving onto ’Uptown Sunday Morning (AKA Flashback), with more sub-bass, spoken word and jazz elements, it is then followed by the interlude ‘Reasons For Leaving’ giving further insight int the city.

Further pace, guitar licks and house mastery are introduced on City Blues, and a homage to the big apple in ‘A Page About Manhattan’ and then onto ‘A Fair Goodbye’ closing out his NYC story and bringing his album to a subtle end. This is a cohesive and emotional collection of pure house tracks and joy to hear in its entirety.

Hollis Parker has managed to consistently put out material that pays homage to his roots both in Hip Hop, Jazz, Jazz Fusion and House, garnering support from heavyweights such as Larry Heard, DJ Sneak, Charles Webster and Joyce Muniz to name a few.  This is undoubtedly a name that many of you will first discover and subsequently pay attention to.

Eelke Kleijn readies fourth studio album 'Oscillations'

Eelke Kleijn readies fourth studio album ‘Oscillations’ Oscillations is out now on DAYS like NIGHTS

by the partae September 27, 2020
written by the partae

It seems like just yesterday that Dutch artist Eelke Kleijn’s third album ‘Moments Of Clarity’ was unleashed on the world, such has been its staying power. Its follow-up was well within the works before the world flipped on its head, but the time off touring has allowed him to pour all his focus into crafting another masterpiece in the form of ‘Oscillations’.

STREAM OR BUY HERE
Another masterclass in melancholy and the spaces between the dancefloor and the home stereo, ‘Oscillations’ is a stunning listen that features a handful of carefully-picked vocalists. Young Dutch talent Josha Daniel sets the tone on the haunting title track, where sorrowful string swells gently support his achingly delicate vocal. He returns for the soaring, club-ready euphoria of ‘Distance’, while former The Boxer Rebellion frontman Nathan Nicholson brings a dramatic rendition to the moody electro chug of ‘Taking Flight’. Another Amsterdam local, Diana Miro, brings mellifluous harmony to the progressive breakbeat stylings of ‘You’.

Previous singles ‘The Magician’, ‘Woodstock’ and ‘The Hierophant’ sound even more glorious as part of this complete body of work, providing dancefloor staples which are resplendent in melody and atmosphere and driving intent. ‘Control’ is another high-energy highlight, with its huge electro breakbeat rhythm, fizzing vocoders and spine-tingling melodies. Ambient passages ‘M87’ and ‘Tide’ lay on endlessly unfolding synth sequences, acting as palette cleansers of sorts, while ‘Lifetime’ indulges some of Kleijn’s Balearic-minded, sunset-drenched tendencies.

It’s a perfectly balanced listen, with just the right mixture of moods and energies and not a second too long or short. Its glorious sonics are equally matched by the album’s refined, wall-worthy artwork by ARIA-nominated artist, Jack Vanzet. And while fans will have to make do with this excellent new album for the moment, the prospect of a full hybrid live/DJ audio-visual show to support it at some point in the hopefully-not-too-distant future is positively mouthwatering.

Not everyone has been lucky enough to benefit from the last couple of months, but Kleijn has been able to use his time very well indeed, incubating another masterful project. Releasing one exceptional album after the other, Eelke Kleijn is and remains an outstanding artist.

To celebrate this fourth studio album, ‘Oscillations’ is also available on vinyl.

About Eelke Kleijn

Three albums into a well established, yet still rapidly ascending career, Kleijn is an artist very much in his element. In the grand scheme of things, he’s an underground artist, but one who has effortlessly made the jump into the wider world when the time and opportunity have felt right. With a background playing piano, guitar, and bass and a healthy sideline in composing for film and TV, his productions are imbued with a deep sense of musicality and emotion. Remixing for the likes of John Legend, Pendulum, James Newton Howard & Jennifer Lawrence, and scoring Hollywood blockbusters like Rush, Parker, and This Means War, Eelke Kleijn really excels in everything he sets his mind to. His latest artist album ‘Moments Of Clarity’ is the apex of his work so far, combining deep house and techno in perfect harmony. His multi-faceted platform ‘DAYS like NIGHTS’ emcompasses a label, a radio show, a podcast, and spectacular parties, firmly establishing him as one of the scene’s most creative and pioneering producers.

Oliver Heldens teams up with Funkin Matt & Bright Sparks for huge new single ‘Somebody’

Oliver Heldens teams up with Funkin Matt & Bright Sparks for huge new single ‘Somebody’

by the partae September 27, 2020
written by the partae

Oliver Heldens has been on an incredible run of late, with headline releases including ‘Details’ with Boy Matthews (RCA), ‘Rave Machine’ with Rowetta (Toolroom Records) and ‘Break This Habit’ with Kiko Bun (Heldeep Records) all enjoying universal praise. Massive remixes for Justin Timberlake & SZA as well as Katy Perry plus Hi-LO singles ‘Zeus’ (Mau5trap) and ‘Kronos’ on Octopus have further contributed to his prolific body of work over the last six months.

Now, Oliver’s back with another majestic track, teaming up with Norwegian artist and Heldeep mainstay Funkin Matt and Scottish vocalist Bright Sparks – who delivers once again following stand out features on records by the likes of Tiësto, Sam Feldt and Klingande — for a full-scale assault on the senses. A respected producer who rose to prominence with his early releases in 2007, Funkin Matt has continued to churn out palatable productions and is well known for his amazing remix of Martin Garrix’s ‘Scared To Be Lonely’, singles “Whitehouse”, ‘Elephant’ and ‘Coda’ and collaborations with Zeds Dead, finds perfect harmony with Heldens on this track.

Bright Sparks’ hushed vocals kick the track off as brooding synth bass hovers menacingly in the background. A classic trance arpeggio rises in the background, propelling us to the drop where techno hi-hats and rasping synths caress the now-soaring vocal. Ride cymbals are added after the second drop as the arp filters into clarity, setting pulses racing and spines tingling as the vocal echoes blissfully into the abyss. It’s a cross between melodic techno and vocal house that works brilliantly, and is aching to be heard in those big rooms that we’re all missing so badly.

In other exciting news, Heldens will host Heldens Everywhere — a new exclusive interactive, online audiovisual experience for fans. The livestream will feature Heldens and a cast of characters amidst an ever-evolving set design based around six different TV shows, with his music worked into the concept throughout. While fans are unable to see him perform in the flesh, this will offer them the chance to be part of an exclusive event with him and thousands of other fans on cadenza.tv on October 1.

‘Somebody’ is out now on Heldeep Records!

About Oliver Heldens:
25-year-old Dutch star Oliver Heldens, stands out from the crowd with his own distinctive sound, counting numerous No. 1 hits and over 2 billion cumulative streams to his name. SODA STATE ‘MIDNIGHT’ THE DIGITAL AVATARS RETURN FROM THEIR INTERDIMENSIONAL UNIVERSE TO PRESENT THEIR FIRST ORIGINAL WORK, THE DISCO INFUSED ‘MIDNIGHT’

Soda State have now made their mark with the debut release, ‘The Look’. A 2020-rework of Metronomy’s 2011 track of the same name which introduced the duo to the ears of the wider music world. Arriving last month, the track set the standard of their signature sound and established Soda State as a ‘one to watch’ act for the new decade. Building upon a flurry of already promising early industry support, Soda State now return with their first original track titled ‘Midnight’.

“So we started this crazy journey with The Look, and since then we’ve been living in the studio, trying to recapture the magic that sent us to Soda State first time round. … And then it happened again. We made it through the portal. This is Midnight.”  Soda State

It was two unsuspecting friends, who whilst making electronic music with home-made gadgets, managed to open up an interdimensional portal with code, slipping into a parallel utopian paradise they call ‘Soda State’. They quickly return to reality as digital versions of themselves. Hypnotized by what they’ve experienced, M & Tracie can’t rest until they find their way back…

Here they present their new and latest pop meets dance track ‘Midnight’. Continuing the nostalgic energy and feel of their first release, ‘Midnight’ is bursting with funky guitar licks, pulsating disco and white-hot synths. With a hint of Italo Disco, it’s a slice of feel good dance with a super catchy vocal line, perfect on the radio or on your favourite playlist.

For those of you new to Soda State, think The Blaze meets Gorillaz. Soda State is a brand-new all-encompassing dance music project and virtual band, brilliantly conceptualised, totally original and are sure to be well recognised digital characters of the future.

Soda State come to us with fascinating and highly creative imagery. They are also lovers of all things retro, think video games, fashion, skating and of course, music. These traits make the characters come to life, with a raft of future music already planned for 2021 and beyond.

Playlist September 2020

Dylan Josua – can’t stay

Dylan Joshua has returned with his newest offering ‘can’t stay’. Not one to be penned into strict genres of hip-hop or RnB, Dylan’s art could be defined at V&B – vibes and blues. The track creates the perfect balance of cool and dreamy vibes that maintains a spellbinding stream of consciousness that is effortlessly and melodically performed. With a weightless air and consistent flow that catches the attention, ‘can’t stay’ takes a look at the deep feelings within a relationship and his honest lyrics face up to the unfavourable parts of love and emotion. As the narrative evolves, Dylan paints a vivid picture in the mind of the listener that provides for a lyrical journey, led by pulsing beats and his stylised, distorted vocals.

Magazines – Happy Alone

Magazines have built a reputation as the new indie darlings of the Irish music scene. The band dropped some debut releases last year and quickly garnered attention on the Dublin live music scene (before… well, you know). The group now return with new single ‘Happy Alone’, a fan favourite that is already being heralded as their best work to date.

Earl Gray Collective – This House

Earl Gray Collective’s new single ‘This House’ propels their artistry to a deeper and more musing level as the lyricism takes an introspective turn. The listener is taken on a story-like exploration of self understanding and realisation that is perfectly constructed as the track progresses. The fluidity of the instrumentals elegantly begin whilst emphatically building, defined by tender piano keys and rich, mellow guitar strums, coated in irresistable harmonic vocals.

Kleopatra

Transporting electronic dark-pop to new heights, KLEOPATRA’s debut EP ‘Machina’ is a slick compilation of distorted yet silky vocals and psychedelic melodies. KLEOPATRA intriguingly blurs the lines between humanity and the digital, and compellingly highlights themes of dystopia throughout her craft. With a stand out offering, KLEOPATRA’s sound is strikingly powerful, and provides for an electrifying listen. Each song’s lyricism progressively tells the story of heartbreak and mental health, and also covers topics of abstract thought and metaphorical observation, taking a look at the superficial and mechanical constructions of society. This dark-pop singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist combines modern electronic production with fresh smooth vocals – an android with human consciousness.

Don Barclay – Breathe

Scottish sensation Don Barclay’s new single ‘Breathe’ encapsulates his effortless, raw talent. With twangy instrumentals, and warm vocals, the track breathes life into classic indie-folk. His acoustic sound and stripped back style is beautifully soulful, portraying his natural musical talent to the best of its ability. By carefully honing his smooth tone, Don experiments in ‘Breathe’ by adding a   hip-hop inspired drum within the chorus, showing Don’s fearless approach to his music and in turn making the track exceptionally mellifluous. Taking influence from artists such as James Gillespie, Adam French, Dermot Kennedy, Ben Howard and MILKK, Don has refined his heartwarming craft to form a sound that is both exquisite and dreamy.

Random Weekend – By The Lake House

A fusion of contradicting yet complimentary sounds, ‘Fire by the Lakehouse’ is a production powerhouse formulation by Random Weekend. Harbouring ethereal synth, pounding beats and topped with a mixture of Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L and Pook Hustle’s distinct rap bars, the four tracks ebb and flow with energy, incorporating a plethora of alternative, intoxicating sounds that take a fresh spin on trap. Random Weekend’s genre-blending, vivid vision is projected through their exclusive sound, and their playful, adventurous nature makes for something surely unheard.

DayDream Frenzy – Nowhere I’d Rather Be

Daydream Frenzy drop feel good alt-rock track ‘Nowhere I’d Rather Be’. With an echoey tone, spirited instrumentals and Don Barclay’s authentic vocal tone, the track is as uplifting as it is edgy. Taking influence from the likes of Twin Atlantic, Biffy Clyro, The Hunna, Catfish And The Bottlemen and Don Broco, Daydream Frenzy’s sound is perfectly nostalgic yet refreshingly progressive. The song’s honest lyricism, focuses on positive emotions and harbours a slight element of tongue-in-cheek, all reflecting on Don’s personal journey, making for something truly musing.

Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L – Lavender

Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L’s new single ‘Lavender’ is a playful take on lust and love, with catchy lyrics and a pulsing beat, the song’s storyline is told through Breon’s adept rap flow and charming confidence. ‘Lavender’s’ accompanying visuals encapsulate the essence of both the lyrics and the title, with dusky purple hues captured in the shots with Breon and his female lead, along with sharp camera cuts and wide shots of Breon in his hometown of New York. Embodying his personality perfectly, the single exemplifies Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L as a standout talent, with his brand of Hip-Hop being highly relatable and equally powerful.

Rosita – 3am

Flourishing with silky vocals and a smooth irresistible melody, Rosita’s new single ‘3AM’ is both entrancing and effortlessly cool. This rising star adds a fresh twist to soulful pop, portraying slick R&B vocals through her emotive melodies and lyricism. Her soul-baring tone is fluent and accurate, with a contrast of vibrancy and dynamism. Taking influence from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill, and most recently Summer Walker and Jorja Smith, Rosita’s tone is elegantly refined, and her music takes a fresh approach to classic styles.

Label: CYB3RPVNK

Download / Stream

R3HAB teams up with indie-pop powerhouse Nina Nesbitt for his new single “Family Values,” a sultry house gem with a puckish title that doesn’t necessarily mean what the lyrics are about. The track delivers instrumental melodies that build up to a percussive drop with deep, bouncy basslines that fuse seamlessly with Nina‘s soulful vocals. “Family Values” sees R3HAB returning to a groovier sound, which invites listeners to the dance floor any time of day! It also follows his recent foray into the pop world with “love u again” with Olivia Holt and his remix of Jason Derulo‘s “Take You Dancing.” Check out what both R3HAB and Nina have to say about their exciting new collaboration below:

“I got to know Nina‘s voice when I remixed her ‘Somebody Special‘, and I’m happy we got to create ‘Family Values‘ together. Nina‘s writing style is clever and surprising, which makes working on songs exciting and fun. She’s got the best sense of humor and a fun outlook on the world, and I think our song captures that perfectly.” – R3HAB

“I’m so excited to collaborate with R3HAB for the second time after previously hearing him remix my song ‘Somebody Special.’ I wrote ‘Family Values‘ on a day off last festival season while sitting on a trampoline with a guitar, and it’s amazing to see where R3HAB has taken it and how it’s transformed since then.” – Nina Nesbitt

Dutch/Moroccan DJ and producer Fadi El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough hit remix of Afrojack, Pitbull and Ne-Yo‘s “Give Me Everything” to his dance anthems, such as “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” which have collectively amassed over 600M streams, to his collaborations with the likes of ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Timmy Trumpet and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game. He partnered with Spotify and GATTÜSO to create the first-ever official “mint” single release. In 2016 he founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which passed one billion streams on its catalog within the first two years since the inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, experimenting with everything from hip-hop to pop through his collaborations. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, R3HAB is only beginning his journey. Keep an eye out for what’s up to next!

Sydney artist Swimwear announces ambitious debut album Night Air – a concept album released in chapters, commencing with first single ‘Happyness’

by the partae September 25, 2020
written by the partae

“If its lead single is anything to go by, the conceptual entity that is Night Air is undoubtedly on track to become one of the most immersive and intriguing releases shared this year.”
– Tyler Jenke, Rolling Stone

Sydney bedroom producer Tim Derricourt (Dappled Cities) has been writing and releasing music under his solo muse, Swimwear since his debut EP of 2012. Featuring the head-turning single ‘Easy High’, The Kissing Machine catalysed the first of three Swimwear EPs with follow ups, Low Summer and High Summer building upon Derricourt’s distinct low-fi sound and instantaneous impact both at home and abroad. Four years on and Swimwear is thrilled to announce the imminent arrival of his debut long play Night Air, with the first instalment ‘Happyness’ out today.

Inspired by Richard Yates’ 1962 novel Revolutionary Road and its images of suburban isolation and burnt out love, Night Air is a concept album traversing the explosive start and disintegration of a relationship, capturing feelings of midnight isolation and a world beckoning beyond. Trickled out over four chapters, Night Air begins with the wobbly disco of first single ‘Happyness’. Chapter One introduces a more introspective side to Swimwear’s song-writing, with ‘Happyness’ replacing the gated snares and driving kick of earlier work, and opting for a more atmospheric style, drawing on influences like The Blue Nile, Majical Cloudz and Brian Eno. The result is an ambient, misty world that perfectly captures those late-night feelings of isolation and uncertainty but also the simple, individual joy of being alone, on the road, after midnight, with nowhere to go and no one expecting you back.

STREAM / EMBED CHAPTER ONE: ‘HAPPYNESS’ VIA BANDCAMP

“Happyness is both the first single and first chapter of my debut record Night Air, the origin point of a tale of burning love and love burnt out. The song is a story of a night out, in the warm summer air and the ground humming beneath his feet, when anything and everything is possible.” – Swimwear

Off the back of multiple festival appearances and sold out headline shows with his psychedelic art rock band, Dappled Cities, Swimwear began its life at the coveted SXSW festival. It was there Derricourt was struck by performers such as Washed Out and Toro Y Moi, creating immersive, psychedelic dance music and performing it with joyful abandon, on stage, on their own. Over the next while, he knocked out a bunch of tunes on the road, on a laptop, combining the homespun DIY aesthetic of songwriters like Dan Deacon and Panda Bear with his love of grand pop crooners David Bowie, The Style Council, Pet Shop Boys and Damon Albarn. Three EPs on and the fruits of his labour have finally gifted us with the debut Swimwear LP Night Air slated for release sometime in 2020. Stay tuned for the release date.

Between multidisciplinary artist and musician, Jay Jermyn, and musician, Julian Currie, Veople is an experiential sound and collaboration lingering in the space between tension and release through textural, house-orientated rhythms and electronic production. Since their resurgence this year, the duo have shared the auditory rave of 'Tilt' and the unrelenting post-rock cacophony of 'Maverick', both picking up acclaim from international tastemakers including EARMILK, Dummy Mag, Stoney Roads, Acid Stag, Mystic Sons, FBi Radio, triple j Unearthed and more. 'Empathy', Veople's latest body of work, changes course yet again, charting unfamiliar musical landscapes—showcasing the group's ability to hop across rock and electronic genres in an instant. 'Empathy' allows Veople to continue their trailblazing qualities into an unfathomably skilful and multi-layered cosmopolitan of post-rock and electronica. The group's digital slime appears even more dystopian through the use of a vocoder—processing their vocals into a piece of technology itself, burrowing Veople even further into the matrix. While 'Empathy' still holds true to the group's core mission, the addition of disco and pop elements through guitar and bass licks makes 'Empathy' their most accessible yet. Veople's ethos of blending the human and digital worlds together through music and technology comes to a crossroad on 'Empathy'. As Jay Jermyn (bass/synths/programming) explains: "There's this throbbing synth bass underlying the whole track that drives everything forward but what might not be obvious is that we took parts of the vocoder moments and passed the bass synth through it. This creates an interlocking synergy between the humanistic yet digital vocal and the synths." Once again, the duo handed the track over to Aaron Cupples of Civil Civic for mixing. Cupples' pedigree includes credits for such acclaimed Australian artists as The Drones, Kirin J Callinan and Dan Kelly. Ben Smith (Hatchie, PLTS, Blind Girls, Empress) handled the intricate drum performance of a hats-driven break beat that work symbolically with the 808's production of claps and block hits. 'Empathy' is the opening track to Veople's debut EP, "EP1", due for release this October. The full release will also include latest tracks 'Tilt' and 'Maverick', the unreleased 'Under', and an extended version of 'Empathy'. "EP1" continue the group's penchant for impulsive audio-visual creations, paired to the ultimate and clear-cut vision. Veople began composing music and quickly released their first single, 'Riveria', in 2015 to immediate success on FBi Radio and revered music blog, Hillydilly. This trajectory continued in the international market when signed to Los Angeles-based Danger Village Music Publishing the same year. Regular rotation on triple j Unearthed for follow-up tracks, 'Distant Bodies' and 'Youth Code', cemented Veople as a band to watch. Influenced by the likes of Civil Civic, Japandroids and Digitalism, Veople began work redirecting their sound and, in 2017, were commissioned to produce new music by Super Souvenir as part of Bleach Festival and Festival 2018 during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Veople pressed a vinyl record, "Day/Nights", that instrumentally translated the emotive nature of time and place as achieved in a 24-hour window on the Gold Coast. Veople were also a recipient of the HOTA Creative Development Grant to produce new work in 2019, which culminated in a sold-out live performance at HOTA's Outdoor Stage.   'Empathy' is available now. KURT VILE Shares new single ‘How Lucky’ – A duet with John Prine Announces Speed, Sound, Lonely KV EP

Kurt Vile has announced his Speed, Sound, Lonely KV EP will be released Friday 2 October via Matador / Remote Control. Speed, Sound, Lonely KV was recorded and mixed in sporadic sessions that spanned four years at The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville, TN. It includes five songs — covers of John Prine and “Cowboy” Jack Clement as well as two originals — and was recorded alongside a cast of local heavies like Bobby Wood, Dave Roe, and Kenny Malone with Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys) and Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Superwolf) tossed into the mix as well.

Most importantly, it features what Kurt has called “Probably the single most special musical moment in my life” – a duet with the late John Prine on the songwriter’s well-loved tune, ‘How Lucky’.

“The truth is John was my hero for a long time when he came into The Butcher Shoppe to recut one of his deepest classics with me. And, man, I was floating and flying and I couldn’t hear anything he told me while he was there till after he was gone for the night,” notes Kurt in a personal statement that accompanies the record.

“A couple nights later we were playing ‘How Lucky’ together again; this time onstage at the Grand Ole Opry on New Year’s Eve at the turn of 2020. Nothing like seeing John and his band of musical brothers and family and friends playing into the new decade in front of an adoring audience on that stage in Nashville, TN… and, yup, that’s just how lucky we all got that night.”

Matt Sweeney’s essay on Speed, Sound, Lonely KV (ep):

His body left this planet in 2014, but “Cowboy” Jack Clement still brings seekers like Kurt Vile to Nashville to find the wild and mellow musical spaces he created.

Jack was Nashville’s Wizard of Oz. As a producer, songwriter, and mentor he had a profound guiding hand in the careers of Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Charlie Pride, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Townes Van Zandt, and Kurt Vile’s hero John Prine. Clement’s still-out-of-print ’70s solo album All I Want To Do In Life is a holy grail for Kurt.

So Kurt asked me to introduce him to Jack’s protege, the great David “Fergie” Ferguson. Ferg is a Nashville studio legend in his own right and the owner/operator/house producer of The Butcher Shoppe, a recording studio he started with Prine. He was also Johnny Cash’s right-hand man and recording engineer. He’s a heavy, to say the least.

I’d told Kurt about meeting Ferg in 2005, when Rick Rubin asked me to play guitar on Cash’s America V and VI albums. Raised working in Jack’s studio, Fergie is hilarious. He’s very gruff, yet lovable and a unique mix of hillbilly and worldly. He’s the youngest of the Old Guard — utterly unpredictable and surprising while always maintaining a deep sense of the traditional. I hung on his every word during the Rick Rubin sessions and learned every song he showed me.

In 2006 Ferg called me and said: “Man, you gotta come to Nashville and meet Jack Clement, get with the real guys before they’re all gone.” This invitation was daunting — my NYC ass certainly didn’t know any “country licks”. He reassured me: “Hell, we don’t need any more country licks. We need something different. Besides, nobody’s really from Nashville ’cept for me and Jack loves weirdos so you’ll be fine.”

So I went and my life changed. Ferg opened the doors to the Nashville I’d dreamed about. I kept my cool on that visit and as a reward he told me I could bring my non-Nashville friends to town so he and I could produce records for them “as long as they got songs and can really hang”.

The friends I brought in became new wild cards for Fergie to shuffle into this magic deck. A lot of recording ensued. Jack Clement was in his twilight years, but burning bright. Jack’s home studio and The Butcher Shoppe were full of musical legends dropping by to pick songs, have a smoke, get weird, tell jokes, and make records. For years.

When Jack died in 2014, Ferg assumed the mantle and kept Jack’s loose-but-laser-focused studio-style going at The Butcher Shoppe with the same gang of musicians that came up in Clement’s world.

And Kurt Vile wanted in on the action.

It took a couple years for Kurt and Ferg’s schedules to line up, but they finally lined up like a motherfucker in May 2016 for a recording of Kurt‘s version of the Prine original ‘Speed of the Sound of Loneliness,‘ among other songs.

Then Kurt came back again in late September 2016. Ferg booked two more days at The Butcher Shoppe and made another band for Kurt, including keyboardist Bobby Wood (Dusty In Memphis, Elvis’s ‘Suspicious Minds’) bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash, Jerry Reed), Kenny Malone (George Jones and the rest!), Pat Mclaughlin (ripping solo artist and Prine‘s mandolin player for many years) along with me on guitar as a bridge between that gang and Kurt’s East Coast freakness.

That first day at The Butcher Shoppe we recorded a cover of Cowboy Jack’s ‘Gone Girl’ and a remarkable blissed-out Kurt original. We had to finish early, though, cuz Ferg had also lined up a big night: Some more of his friends to join Kurt for a loose evening of live music at The Station Inn, Nashville’s realest music venue.

Kurt: “It was backstage at the Station Inn where Ferg introduced me to John Prine for the first time. And the first thing John told me was that he heard and liked my version of ‘Speed of the Sound of Loneliness’. I knew Ferg had showed him that recording, but it was wild to hear him acknowledge it to say the least…. meeting him then was a perfect moment to do so, but also comical… I had my daughter Awilda back there with me at that moment — who was 6 at the time — and other interesting people were around like Billy Ray Cyrus, who was being really funny and cool… the other big reason I was there in Nashville at that time was to catch Prine‘s two 70th birthday shows at the Ryman… so to see him a couple nights before his big shows, warming up on such a tiny stage in a moment when I was sort of “in the scene” was a real treat and a trip… I had to break the ice by asking Billy Ray in front of everyone if he ever heard that Cypress Hill song where they namedrop him, to which he replied ‘no, I never heard it!’”

Our mind-blown and hungover selves returned to the Butcher Shoppe the next day to work a little more. It took another three years before Kurt could get back to mix what we did, but on that return trip he finally got to record a song with his hero John Prine.

Kurt: “Probably the single most special musical moment in my life.”

Jack Clement was already gone when Kurt first came to town to catch his vibe. Now John Prine is gone and The Butcher Shoppe building has been sold. But the music Jack Clement made is about an energy between people, an unbroken thread. I’m grateful to witness how Fergie plugged Kurt Vile into Jack’s electric mainline of American music that he’d wired and switched on back in 1958. The songs Kurt recorded at The Butcher Shoppe have that continuous electrical charge running through them.

The new Butcher Shoppe Studio is 14 miles outside of Nashville in the countryside and the sound keeps rolling.

Berlin-based vocalist and songwriter LIA LIA shares her new single ‘Night Call’. The single and accompanying video, directed by Jannik Schneider, are available to buy and stream on all platforms via b4 / Remote Control.

Thriving in the space between the sugary-sweet and the melancholic, LIA LIA’s latest single is pop for after midnight. Inspired by Chinese fairy tales and Japanese anime, the ‘Night Call’ video sees a teenage LIA LIA stuck in school, isolated and alone. As she becomes consumed by anxiety, she awakens Ryū — short for Ryūjin 龍神, “dragon god” — a water dragon spirit in human form who she then has to battle, after taking up arms to become her alter-ego Baby Punk. “The song is about feeling lonely and disconnected from the world, waiting for someone to come and rescue me from my bedroom,” she explains.

‘Night Call’ was mixed and mastered by Geoff Swan (Charli XCX, Caroline Polachek, Ashnikko) and is LIA LIA’s first single release of 2020. Previous releases including cult pop gem ‘Boba Boba’ have drawn the attention of global media titles like NME, Gorilla vs. Bear and The Independent, plus two major profiles in American Vogue and Nylon Japan, in collaboration with Louis Vuitton. LIA LIA also recently supported Doja Cat on a string of German live shows. ‘Night Call’ is released today on b4, a forward-thinking label that serves as a home for tomorrow’s most relevant artists.
