Where are you currently based? Sydney How did you first start playing music? My earliest memory was listening to the Amy Winehouse album (Back To Black) at my grandparents house, they had a piano and I decided to learn how to play the song by ear. I have always loved music but that really was a definitive moment on why I wanted to start playing music.  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? I just finished up on this year's season of AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, and jumped straight into the studio. Covid has given me a lot of time to think and feel to write my music so it has been good in that aspect. I just released my debut ‘More Than I’  Your new single 'More Than I' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Writing "More Than I" I wanted the single to be Cinematic, Dark & Emotional. 'THE HUNGER GAMES' X 'BILLIE EILISH' X FLORENCE & THE MACHINE'  How did you go about writing More Than I? I have had this song written for a few years now, it wasn’t until I got back from LA and had to quarantine that I spent time at the piano and put the music together for the song!  What does this single mean to you? The song is very personal to me. I wrote it about a time in my life where I came out to the world as myself. There is this very silent moment between coming out and waiting for the other end to respond. For me this song is reflective of that moment and the build up to having the courage to be my truth.  Please tell us about any new music on the way and what we can expect: The music that I’m recording and creating now are even more personal, they deep dive more into more obvious moments in my life, moments that I believe the audience will connect to a lot more. With ‘More Than I’ it was really the epic movie trailer music that just like a movie trailer gives you the sneak peak, in the most epic style, of what is yet to come in the all new music coming soon. What was your experience like being involved in America's Got Talent and The Voice, how do the two experiences compare? Well look, I’m so grateful for both. The Voice was very difficult for me, I was learning and growing to be the person that I am in the two seasons of the voice that I was on. There were a lot of great moments and moments I wish I could re-do but in saying that I was able to experiment with my fashion, my voice and how I wanted to present myself.  AGT was a TV giant, but I was prepared, although I was still nervous, I was very confident in myself and my talent. I was not expecting to get 30 Million views on my audition in the first week. Like I said AGT was just GIANT haha!  What did you learn from the experience of being on both? From the aspect of both shows, the biggest thing I learnt was that originality over predictability is key. Authenticity and truth is always the golden ticket and trusting in who you are and not doubting yourself is so important but listening and taking on critique is just as important!  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the experience of being on both shows? The hardest part really is that it is TV and everything is uncertain till the second you're actually singing. Things change and being a performer who has always been a perfection, AGT and the voice have really pushed me to work fast, work smart, think creatively and always out of the box.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Billie Eillish always but right now, Catie Turner from American Idol. Genuinely obsessed.  What do you like to do away from music? Fashion, I love to design and make. For me, the creative and the visual aesthetic is almost if not just as important as the music. I’m a very visual person and the outfit that I’m performing in can be the cherry that makes the performance. Just like a song written uses metaphors to tell the story I use my art to tell the story. I’m always working on something new.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? WRITING WRITING RELEASING! Favourite food and place to hangout? I love art galleries, I can walk around all day haha. Sydney

How did you first start playing music?

My earliest memory was listening to the Amy Winehouse album (Back To Black) at my grandparents house, they had a piano and I decided to learn how to play the song by ear. I have always loved music but that really was a definitive moment on why I wanted to start playing music.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?

I just finished up on this year’s season of AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, and jumped straight into the studio. Covid has given me a lot of time to think and feel to write my music so it has been good in that aspect. I just released my debut ‘More Than I’

Your new single ‘More Than I’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Writing “More Than I” I wanted the single to be Cinematic, Dark & Emotional. ‘THE HUNGER GAMES’ X ‘BILLIE EILISH’ X FLORENCE & THE MACHINE’

How did you go about writing More Than I?

I have had this song written for a few years now, it wasn’t until I got back from LA and had to quarantine that I spent time at the piano and put the music together for the song!

What does this single mean to you?

The song is very personal to me. I wrote it about a time in my life where I came out to the world as myself. JESSICA JADE REVEALS EAGERLY AWAITED DEBUT EP ‘BET’

by the partae December 4, 2020
written by the partae

“Jessica Jade is one of those artists that you’ll be glad to have known about before they got big, and trust us, it is going to happen soon.” – Tone Deaf

“Bet is an extremely likeable track from an artist I could literally listen to all day.” – Project U

“Sydney has a new R n B star on the rise.” – SNIFFERS

Proud western Sydney sensation Jessica Jade today drops her eagerly awaited debut EP ‘BET’ as well as hard-hitting feature track ‘Drive By’ which premiered on Complex.

‘BET’ is a bold omnibus from the young R&B artist, showcasing every facet of the multi-dimensional act. Opening with the vulnerable, pop-leaning ‘You’, it includes further singles ‘Taste’ – a sludgy empowerment anthem – and ballad title track ‘BET’, alongside feature track ‘Drive By’.

Speaking on the vulnerability of the creative process Jade acknowledges “I feel like I’ve been really lost over the past few years but finally working on something solid has taught me to take time with my art and trust the process as well as trust myself. I’ve learned that music is my way of reassuring myself that I am on the right path and where I am meant to be.”

THE TESKEY BROTHERS RELEASE TWO CHRISTMAS SONGS ‘DREAMING OF A CHRISTMAS WITH YOU’ & ‘HIGHWAY HOME FOR CHRISTMAS’ + ANNOUNCE CHRISTMAS EVENT WITH ORCHESTRA VICTORIA!

written by the partae

Coming through with the holiday cheer, 2020 ARIA Award winners The Teskey Brothers have today released two original Christmas songs, ‘Dreaming Of A Christmas With You’ (+ accompanying video) and ‘Highway Home For Christmas’!  To coincide with the release, the band have also announced an extremely special Christmas performance event with Orchestra Victoria, which will be filmed at Hamer Hall and premiered on YouTube on Tuesday 22 December at 10.00am AEDT.

Speaking of ‘Dreaming Of A Christmas With You / Highway Home For Christmas’, The Teskey Brothers said:
“Our first Christmas tunes! These two songs are both inspired by the lockdown we all faced this year. The story speaks to the separation of lovers and family, in Victoria’s case divided by the great Murray River, holding onto hope for a reunion at Christmas. You’ve got a lonely soul at home who’s ‘Dreaming Of A Christmas With You’, while their loved one is hightailing it down the ‘Highway Home For Christmas’. After a slow year off the tools, it was so much fun to get back together and record these tracks live in the room.”
Rounding out the year will be a not-to-be-missed performance by The Teskey Brothers, whose songs will be reimagined by arranger Jamie Messenger and performed live onstage at Hamer Hall with Orchestra Victoria (led by conductor Nicholas Buc) and viewable to fans across the world on YouTube. The 50-minute performance will feature songs from the band’s catalogue, a debut performance of ‘Dreaming Of A Christmas With You’ and ‘Highway Home For Christmas’, as well as a few more surprises in the works.

The news comes off the back of last week’s ARIA Award win for Best Blues & Roots Album for their #1 ARIA chart-topping LP, Live At The Forum! Amidst a 16-date sold out national Australian tour in 2019, the band undertook the arduous task of recording to analogue tape during their four-night stand at the beloved Melbourne venue. The album features songs from the band’s two revered albums, Run Home Slow (2019) and Half Mile Harvest (2017), as well as a special cover of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’. Live At The Forum is the first live album to go number 1 by an Australian band since 1992’s AC/DC Live.

INTRODUCING ROBERT IRISH LISTEN TO NEW SINGLE ‘ALL OF YOU’

by the partae December 4, 2020
written by the partae

Meet Robert Irish, the Australian-born, New York-based singer-songwriter with his debut track ‘All Of You‘. Listen HERE, watch HERE.

‘All Of You‘ is a soundtrack to the open road, with pit stops at the Cass McCombs, Phosphorescent and Fleet Foxes discographies along its journey. Rolling bass, expansive synths and desert dive piano come together somewhere between Kurt Vile and a Father John Misty deep cut. The accompanying video takes inspiration from the home-movie sequence in Wim Wenders’ film Paris, Texas, and the intimate Super 8 film moments captured in the 1970’s.

Of the track, Irish shares, “All Of You is a song about leaving a life behind to devote yourself to someone you love, and that theme seemed so over the top that I felt it needed a wink in there to get it up out of the ground. Humour is so important in music. It is what let’s it be sad.”

Robert Irish is the new solo project from the guitarist of Sydney-trio Devotional, and the first of his recorded music since relocating to New York City in 2015. Taking influence from past greats such as Roy Orbison and Gram Parsons, Robert Irish delivers music that is tense and tender, with bittersweet humour and country twang. Stay tuned for more news coming soon.

‘All Of You‘ by Robert Irish is out now, buy/stream it here.

Mia Dyson reveals vinyl reissue of her acclaimed 2005 Parking Lots LP + Digital release Parking Lots (Revisited) anniversary EP + 2021 Australian East Coast tour dates on sale now

Australian icon Mia Dyson is thrilled to be reissuing her ARIA Award-winning 2005 album Parking Lots on vinyl, celebrating the 15-year milestone release with an additional Parking Lots (Revisited) EP and 2021 East Coast Tour.

Heading back into the studio in 2020 to revisit five songs from the album, Mia’s Parking Lots (Revisited) EP sheds new light on a selection of her favourite cuts from the record. From beloved single ‘Roll Me Out’ to the stunning homage of motherly love on ‘Rivers Wide’, and the simple yet captivating title track to the empowering ‘Choose’ and heartbreaking ‘I Meant Something To You Once’, the EP captures the sheer musical mastery of an artist who continues to redefine the blues and roots genre, 15 years on, with the rest of her expansive career still to come.

“Some of my friends and I used to perform in a women’s prison in Western Melbourne. I got to know a few women quite well and over time they shared their stories with me. I wrote Roll Me Out thinking of the story of one woman in particular who had been incarcerated, and then fell in love with another prisoner.” – Mia Dyson

Parking Lots (Revisited) EP Track Listing
1. Roll Me Out
2. Rivers Wide
3. Parking Lots
4. Choose
5. I Meant Something To You Once

“I had my heart broken first not by a lover, but by a friend in high school. It stung a lot and a long time and eventually ended up in this song. Before, when we were about 13, my friend picked up the guitar and started writing. She inspired me to do the same and I’m eternally grateful.” – Mia Dyson

In her two-decade long career, Mia Dyson has been nominated for five ARIA Awards with Parking Lots taking out ‘Best Blues and Roots Album’ in 2005. She was the inaugural recipient of Double J’s Artist Of The Year at the 2014 J Awards following the release of her Australian classic LP Idyllwild, and has had four albums up for AIR Awards with The Moment earning her a nomination for ‘Song Of The Year’ at the 2013 APRA Awards. Mia Dyson’s extensive career has seen her support the likes of Stevie Nicks, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt and Joe Cocker, and most recently touring extensively with her band Dyson Stringer Cloher. Now, the seasoned Australian artist is thrilled to be heading back on the road for a run of National live dates in 2021 across Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne, regional Victoria, Brisbane and Byron Bay for Bluesfest in her first live shows in 12 months. JOSEF SALVAT ANNOUNCES NEW EP The Close / Le Revéil out March 26 New tracks ‘First Time’ + ‘Swimming Upstream’ out today

by the partae December 4, 2020
written by the partae

“The Close/ Le Réveil was written in the last week of August in my lounge and produced across the first two weeks of September.

The urgency of it was in part a response to the stagnancy of 2020, and in part a response to it being the first time I’ve written music to directly process emotion, rather than reflect upon it after the fact. I essentially wrote my own breakup playlist.

The title alludes to the well-worn cliche of endings being beginnings. The songs are loosely structured around the various phases of grief after an ending and aim to ‘close the book’. The project as a whole, and its creation, represents the release from that and the awakening that comes after, ‘le réveil’.

The lead track from this EP, ‘First Time’ looks at the enormous and overwhelming experience of first love and first loss. ‘Swimming Upstream’ is about two people trying but failing, as the past haunts the present and distorts reality after the fantasy of newness fades. It’s a song of regret and sadness, wrapped in a sense of injustice and resentment.

The EP gets gradually lighter. ‘One More Night’ is about missing the sex, ‘Peaches’ about realising mistakes and understanding that you have to grow yourself, ‘Carry On’ is half nostalgia /half acceptance, an understanding that time passes and all you can do is wait, and finally ‘I Miss You’ is about memorialising something that, even if it wasn’t right, was beautiful and deserves a longer life than it got, which essentially is the purpose of the whole project.”

WADE JACKSON New album Sensationalized is out today! Announces Sydney album launch Jan 14

by the partae December 4, 2020
written by the partae

Following his recent signing to Broken Stone Records, today Sydney-based artist Wade Jackson releases his new album Sensationalized, which features his latest single ‘Nightlife’.

As Jackson details of the album “Sensationalized was written and recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown in Sydney. The theme is based around a fictional complete city breakdown, exaggerated reality. An almost apocalyptic, dystopian city with different scenarios played out by different characters in a diary/self reflection style.

This was also reflected in the music I was listening to: Joe Walsh – Barnstorm, Joni Mitchell – Hejira, Lewis Baloue – L’amour, Peter Koppes – Manchild or Myth. All these records for me have a real reclusive feel and felt comforting whilst alone during lockdown.”

Jackson began predominantly worked in music theatre and writing screen plays. Given things weren’t going so well he decided to use his musical chops to write his debut album Goodbye Rain, Hello Sunshine in 2012 which he later recorded with producer Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Cloud Control to Major Tom, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Dream). Touring Australia widely, he took a break to write Whiskey Alpha Delta Echo in the fall of 2013, again co-producing with Judson. The album was picked up on a licensing deal from a Spanish label generating a European tour.

After returning from Europe, with wind in his sails and sales he started work on the follow-up, Crown & Cathedral which unfortunately was disliked immensely by his Spanish fan base citing “there’s too much synthesiser”, a mistake that Jackson did not learn from and continued to use on the follow up album, The Ghost Searches Beside Me. The LP was recorded and mixed by Jackson with his new set of skills he was forced to learn after going broke from investing all of his money into a music documentary he made with friend and well known Australian band manager and industry stalwart, Greg Carey. Waiting – The Van Duren Story was screened around the world and well received.

Now, Broken Stone Records are thrilled to release Jackson’s fifth album titled Sensationalized.

To celebrate the release, Jackson will be launching Sensationalized live on Jan 14, 2021 at Sydney’s Moshpit. Tickets will be available soon.

ANTOINE REVEALS GLOSSY NEW SINGLE ‘NEW BAE SH*T’
Music News

Antoine – Reveals Glossy New Single ‘New Bae Sh*t’

by the partae December 4, 2020
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS SINGLE ‘LIVING IN COLOUR’

“A masterclass in narration, a breathtaking single from someone who wants to make a difference.”
– Clash Magazine (UK)

“Expertly pairing a laidback melody with some hard-hitting lyrics, Antoine this is your best yet. Sampling Meyne in here works so well without disrupting your flow and packs a major emotional punch, and those last bars at the end? Really powerful.” – 4.5/5 stars
– Pip Rasmussen – triple j (AUS)

“Poetic and powerful gear from Antoine!” – 4/5 stars
– Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)

Following on from his critically praised single ‘Living In Colour’, Melbourne-based R&B artist Antoine has just returned with his alluring new single ‘New Bae Sh*t’ – produced and mixed by long-time collaborator ServidSounds.

Opening with sharp hi-hats, delicate synths stabs and Antoine’s effortlessly smooth delivery, ‘New Bae Sh*t’ is an elegant slice of polished R&B. Reverberating bass subs float in and out as the deftly mixed track leaves space for each element to develop eloquently.

Antoine talks about the process behind ‘New Bae Sh*t’:

“We only whipped this up about a month ago. The fastest songs we create are always the ones we love the most, because it means it’s just an effortless and instant vibe, which is exactly what happened with ‘New Bae Sh*t’. After hearing the beat from ServidSounds, I had something written within an hour and we laid it out that week. We had to get this one out for summer.”

Previous singles have been widely embraced by Spotify, Apple Music, triple j, triple j Unearthed and Australian community radio. They’ve also seen support from online blogs Clash Magazine (UK), Pilerats, AUD’$, Cool Accidents, Acid Stag, Mixdown Magazine, The Local Frequency, The Soundcheck and AAA Backstage.

Antoine comes from a family of musicians, who all originate from Mauritius, East Africa and Italy. His Dad is a multi-instrumentalist who still plays shows to this day, and his mother was also a back-up R&B vocalist in the ’80s. Both parents have been huge influences, making it difficult for him to have passion elsewhere.

In the coming weeks, Antoine will reveal an accompanying music video for ‘New Bae Sh*t’.

‘New Bae Sh*t’ is available worldwide now

WESTERMAN SHARES ‘YOUR HERO IS NOT DEAD (UNACCOMPANIED)’

PRAISE FOR YOUR HERO IS NOT DEAD

“The British songwriter’s excellent debut mines the gentle and detailed sounds of soft rock’s past, while his lucid yet uncomplicated lyrics interrogate the uncertainty of the present”
Pitchfork (8/10)

“Softly powerful alt-pop that feels like a warm hug”
The Guardian Guide

“One of the year’s most beautiful albums”
Dazed

Today, Westerman shares ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead (Unaccompanied)’, featuring a stunning piano performance from Westerman. The new version of the title track from Westerman‘s debut album retains the original’s deft sense of song-craft, but puts a new emphasis on its delicate emotional undercurrents. Listen HERE.

Your Hero Is Not Dead, released earlier this year via Play It Again Sam is a graceful and self-reflective debut album that continues the artist’s journey from pop maverick to one of the most vital voices coming out of the UK. The project includes previously released singles, ‘The Line‘, the original ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead‘, ‘Waiting On Design‘, ‘Think I’ll Stay‘ and ‘Blue Comanche‘ and is the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Ark EP.

Westerman shares about ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead (Unaccompanied)’, “I started teaching myself to play the piano at the start of the first lockdown in the UK. It was helpful to have something new to try and occupy the mind in a period when too much free thinking time was proving damaging. This song closed my album and was meant as a personal call to arms for times of difficulty. It was written as a reminder to look for resilience and the admirable characteristics we pin on others in ourselves. My piano playing is, as you can hear, very basic and full of imperfection, but the point was to create, to meet that challenge in what way I could. It’s important to remember that we can endure and that we learn through periods such as the one we continue to live through. I am happy to share it and would like to thank Fabian Prynn especially for his patience in sitting with me through many botched takes. With love from Will.”

Earlier this week, Westerman shared a new t-shirt featuring the ‘Big Nothing Glow’ artwork designed by Bráulio Amado. Net proceeds from each sale will be donated to Shelter UK, whose mission is to help millions of people each year struggling with bad housing or homelessness. The track also comes on the heels of Westerman‘s recent release of Choupana, a collection of early sketches from Your Hero Is Not Dead that includes the early workings of a song that was not included on the final album, ‘Above Average‘, and initial versions of some of the standout tracks from the project that released earlier this year – ‘Blue Comanche‘, ‘The Line‘ and ‘Think I’ll Stay‘.

SLEAFORD MODS Share new single & video ‘Shortcummings’ New album Spare Ribs out January 15, 2021

Following ‘Mork n Mindy’ their latest single featuring Billy Nomates, Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods today release their politically-charged, no holds barred single ‘Shortcummings’ with a premiere from Matt Wilkinson on Apple 1 Music.  The song is taken from the upcoming album Spare Ribs out via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records on January 15th 2021.

The band’s Jason Williamson says “I wrote the lyrics to Shortcummings in late 2019 after becoming annoyed by Dominic Cummings increased unelected presence. The arrogance of the privileged generally leads to short, short short, short, short cummings in a momentary centre stage at the cost of untold human misery and exploitation of public money. In the case of Cummings who exactly knows what he lost when he walked out of No10’s front door. It looked staged or given what I suspect is his sense of intellectual superiority, perhaps one last show of bizarre defiance. But there is no defiance when you come from privileged stock, just pistols at dawn. Posh hamsters going at each other. It’s just so fucking tiresome, as we lumpily coexist, us and the elite. The fortress of control is too strong and indeed there is no denying now, that there is powerlessness in the idea of revolt in this modern day daylight robbery.”

The polemical Williamson and dexterous producer Andrew Fearn kick against the pricks with unrivalled bite, railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy with their inimitable, scabrous sense of humour.  And Spare Ribs, their astonishing sixth album, featuring Amy Taylor of Melbourne punks Amyl and the Sniffers and the British newcomer Billy Nomates, finds the duo charged with ire at the UK Government’s sense of entitlement, epitomised by its devil-may-care approach to the coronavirus crisis.

Recorded in lockdown in a furious three-week studio blitz at JT Soar in July, Spare Ribs is the sound of a band so sure of their own sonic terrain that they can now explore its outer regions. The album’s title, Jason says, emerged from “the idea of the amount of people that died from the first wave of coronavirus; human lives are always expendable to the elites… We’re in a constant state of being spare ribs.” Yet Sleaford Mods are an essential part of Britain’s musical anatomy.

Spare Ribs follows Sleaford Mods’ career-spanning retrospective album All That Glue and their sold-out debut Australian tour in March, which included standout performances at Golden Plains Festival, WOMADadelaide, Farmer & The Owl and more.

With a captivating and commanding stage presence, Ainslie’s music has seen her tour both nationally and internationally, being invited to support the likes of Leon Bridges, Michael Kiwanuka, Hiatus Kaiyote, Lianne La Havas in addition to her own sold out headline shows in Australia and UK.  Crafting honestly told stories, Ainslie is gathering an army of lifelong converts.

Ainslie’s music has been picked up by Lauren Laverne and Guy Garvey (BBC6), as well as receiving high rotation on triple j for single Drive.

Blaise Sherrie (Mushroom Group)
Blaise Sherrie is a Label Manager within Mushroom Group, and oversees I OH YOU, Soothsayer, 100s + 1000s, and multi-Platinum selling group Bliss n Eso.
After beginning with Mushroom Group in 2014, her role quickly expanded to oversee I OH YOU, where she is responsible for project operations for critically acclaimed and awarding winning artists such as Violent Soho, DMA’S, DZ Deathrays and Jack River; Soothsayer, an electronic leaning label that is home to a stable of widely respected talent including Willaris. K, KUČKA and Love Deluxe; and 100s + 1000s, a boutique label that provides label services for artists across a wide range of genres.
Blaise credits her deep passion for music and genuine care for the careers of the talented artists she works with as a driving factor in her success.

Jeremy Furze (Applejack Music)
Jeremy Furze is owner of Applejack Music, an artist management company. He has worked in the music industry for 14 years including senior positions within record labels, venues, tour management, finance and publicity. He is a member of the Association of Artist Managers and a regular attendee at international conferences such as SXSW, Great Escape, Reeperbahn and BIGSOUND.
Over the past four years Jeremy has worked as a full-time artist manager with a roster that includes Little Quirks, Liz Stringer and Grammy-nominated, ARIA winning band The Teskey Brothers. He and his full-time assistant Al Parkinson work closely with several record labels across these projects.

Leah Flanagan (Artist)
Leah Flanagan’s third studio album, Colour by Number, sparkles with pop gems, shimmering like beads of condensation against cold glass on a sultry Darwin evening.
Produced by Sarah Belkner and recorded by Richard “Richie” Belkner at Free Energy Device Studios in Sydney, Colour By Number is an assured maiden outing into deeply personal terrain for Flanagan. The record glimmers with nods to Sade, Bic Runga and Norah Jones while leaning back into the assuredness of Flanagan’s characteristically unhurried, deft vocal delivery.
Flanagan draws from the communities of cultures which have bolstered her proud Italian, Indigenous (Alyawarre) and Irish heritage to present songs steeped in a maturity and knowing that cannot be feigned. She skilfully synthesises long-formed thoughts on belonging, identity and self-knowing with her deep connection to her art, set against Belker’s playful and confident pop-informed choices.
While her individual accomplishments are many, Flanagan’s musical career continues to be interwoven by rich collaboration with some of Australia’s most luminary writers and performers including Archie Roach, Shane Howard, the Mission Songs Project, Yothu Yindi, The Spirit of Churaki and Buried Country 1.5. She has also delivered a variety of works for major arts festivals including Leonard Bernstein’s Mass for the Adelaide Festival and her own work for stage, Midnight Muses, at the Adelaide Cabaret and Sydney Festivals. Flanagan’s song Speak Your Language was covered by singer-songwriter, Alice Skye for ABC Music’s Compilation Deadly Hearts #2.
Colour By Number is out now through Flanagan’s Darwin based, Indigenous owned and operated label Small Change Records.

Tasman Keith (Artist)
Hometown pride runs deep for 24-year-old rapper Tasman Keith, whose music is indebted to giving back to the community that raised him. From a small town on New South Wales’ mid-North Coast most commonly recognised for one of the country’s most notorious missions and most shameful history, the rapper is carrying on the storytelling traditions of his family, by writing a new chapter through music. From syrupy 90s West Coast synths, to neo-funk, skittering trap hi-hats and emotive R&B, his music defies categorisation, but his message remains hard to ignore.
2019 saw Keith capitalise on the attention his debut EP Mission Famous spawned, drawing praise from VICE, LNWY.CO, Pilerats and more, alongside rotation on triple j and Spotify’s All Aussie Hip Hop. Recent singles ‘BILLY BAD AGAIN’, ‘move up’ and ‘Prey’ featuring Darwin singer Stevie Jean, from their collaborative EP Evenings, made it three for three for Keith, scoring high rotation across triple j and Australian community radio. From here, Tasman graduated to larger stages around the country last year, with performances at Laneway Festival, Groovin’ The Moo, BIGSOUND and more.
The rapper is determined to use his platform as an unstoppable, undeniable voice for the voiceless with the release of his Mission Famous documentary, alongside profiles for VICE and Red Bull Music. Taking the social justice messages across his music to new heights, his commitment to shining a light on the collective achievements of his hometown is solidifying Tasman Keith as an indispensable leader of Australia’s new hip hop vanguard.

Tom Larnach-Jones (Milk! Records)
Tom Larnach-Jones has had a varied career in music; initially working at Shock Records in 1993 as an International Buyer, then in International Licensing before becoming Australian Label Manager. In 1997 Tom founded ARIA award winning independent label Trifekta Records. Releasing 60 titles over the course of 10 years, Trifekta was at times the home to Architecture in Helsinki, The Avalanches, The Go-Betweens, Art of Fighting and many more local and overseas favourites.
Tom has made a substantial contribution to live music; initially working as the Melbourne side-show coordinator for the Big Day Out. He went on to book at venues Revolver Upstairs, The Toff in Town, The Gasometer and The Croxton Bandroom. Tom has taught music business at AIM and Collarts as well as working in Writer Services at APRA AMCOS.
In early 2019 Tom took over the role of Label Manager from Jen Cloher at much loved Melbourne label Milk! Records. He also manages Melbourne artists June Jones & Art of Fighting and teaches the subject ‘Label’ at Melbourne Polytechnic as part of their Bachelor of Songwriting & Music Production.

Andrew Pololos

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Montreal, Canada

How did you first start playing music?

My dad was a wedding DJ growing up so he taught me how to spin at a young age.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

Despite the lockdown and not being able to spin, the silver lining has been having a lot of studio time and new music.

Your new single ‘Control’ from your forthcoming album ‘Until We Dance’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The track was influenced by the nightclubs I miss playing in. I wanted to release a darker and moodier track, and JT Soul nailed the mysterious and alluring vibe with his lyrics.

How did you go about writing Control?

I drove over to JT Soul’s studio for a writing session, and he essentially figured out the vocal melody right away. He then jumped in the recording booth, freestyled some flows and then came out and started putting words to it. I loved the ‘you lost all control’ part before the drop, so we worked around that after.

I was looking for a vocalist for this track for over a year, so I was in awe at how efficiently he works. He kind of entered my world of dance and electronic for this collaboration and he smashed it. He’s super talented.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

This track actually took quite some time and effort. I started the initial idea and first sketch in my home studio. I then brought it over to my buddy Kevin Figs’ studio, where he laid down the guitars and the phat bass sound. After that I searched far and wide for a vocalist until I met JT Soul. We had a couple sessions and worked on the track in his studio. I then arranged the vocals and structure at home until it was finally ready to be mixed and mastered at the label studios.

What programs/instruments did you use?

Kevin’s 1960’s limited edition Eric Clapton Fender Stratocaster for all the guitar layers. Trillian for the bass line. The drums were sampled and taken from my previous release ‘Never Be The Same’. And Refx’ nexus3 and Native Instruments’ Komplete package for the synthesizers.

How did you approach the recording/production of Control?

When I sit down in studio, I always reflect on what worked on the dancefloor in my club gigs that week. I knew I wanted to have a sexy club track I could play in my sets, so I started from there. The mysterious pads and chords in the beginning came first. Then a nice, long build up before a climatic drop that hits you hard.

Please tell us about what we can expect from your album, format, styles, sounds etc:

The album is fun, it’s feel-good and every track features an awesome vocalist from around the world. You’ll hear a lot of live instruments, performed by some super talented artists as well. You could call it dance or electronic or house… All I know is that I had a lot of fun making it and it’s meant to make you move.

Which artists and records have influenced you most over the years?

Tiësto was my idol growing up. Seeing him sell out stadiums and arenas was the coolest thing. Then when I first got into house music over a decade ago, I was influenced by French producers like David Guetta, Bob Sinclair and Daft Punk, who are still more relevant than ever. Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time’ is my favorite song of all time. I loved the Dutch and Swedish DJs at the time as well. Seeing Erick Morillo in Mykonos changed my life in 2011. Then I got into deep house in 2012 and fell in love with Jamie Jones, Lee Foss, Hot Since 82 and at the same time, the Swedish House Mafia, Avicii and more. Then I was inspired by UK producers like Mark Knight, Calvin Harris, Gorgon City and more. Nowadays, I’d love to sign a record with Defected or Toolroom Records.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I’m listening to Ludo Lacoste, Tom&Collins, Wh0, John Summit, Black Coffee.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love to travel, sail, eat, play soccer, snowboard, trade stocks, watch movies and hang out with family and friends.

Any shows coming up?

I’ve got some virtual gigs lined up but live shows will have until summer 2021 here in Canada.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

Make more music. Prepare some tracks I could play out in summer 2021 and hopefully get to throw a little album release party. Fingers crossed.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I love Greek food obviously, but my absolute favorite food dish is tacos! I can eat tacos breakfast, lunch, dinner every single day no problem. As for my favorite place to hang out; I sometimes spin in bars and nightclubs 5 nights a week, so my favorite place to be is at home. Hanging out at my place and having tacos with my friends is my ideal off night.

Stuck Out Release The Video For New Single ‘Inverse’ Taken From New EP ‘Lie Through Your Teeth’ Out December 18

by the partae December 3, 2020
written by the partae

Melbourne’s, Stuck Out have revealed their newest single, Inverse, taken from their upcoming second EP, Lie Through Your Teeth out on December 18 through Greyscale Records in Australia and Sharptone Records for the rest of the world.

Inverse follows the first single, Mindless which features Mikaila Delgado from Yours Truly.

Josh Walker discusses Inverse, “This song looks at self-destructive behaviour and the lies we tell ourselves to excuse harmful choices. It’s very easy to shift and project blame onto things around us when we’re facing a problem and ignore our own negative contribution to the issue. I’ve had an on-and-off problem with alcohol and this song voices the struggle between my own self-awareness and blissful ignorance.”

Lie Through Your Teeth is an EP based around the consequences when we lie to others, we lie to ourselves, and we in turn are lied to. The EP looks at a range of circumstances where the truth is withheld and how that affects everyone in the situation.

Stuck Out’s lyrics resonate like that familiar internal monologue we all shared when we discovered one simple truth: growing up is not all it’s cracked up to be. Navigating the ins and outs of complex relationships, while trying to find your place in a world that makes less sense by the day have become the cornerstone for the band’s lyrics, and they want to use every platform they can to help music lovers feel a little less alone. While some musicians play their cards quite close to their chest, Stuck Out have worn their heart on their sleeve since day one, and it has lead to them garnishing a keen and loyal fanbase.

The young four piece have made their way around Australia multiple times over the past few years off the back of their 2018 Greyscale Records debut EP You Won’t Come Home. They have supported acts such as As It Is, With Confidence, The Story So Far, and Senses Fail; enrapturing audiences with their blend of rock infused pop-punk that cuts through to a deeper layer of the human condition. The band can also now forever lay claim to playing the very first note ever played on a stage at the now staple of the Australian heavy music calendar, Good Things Festival.

2020 saw the band knuckle down to work on a follow up to their debut EP, and came out the other side with a very pointed EP titled Lie Through Your Teeth. Now the band & Greyscale Records look to the future as they add Sharptone Records to the team to help them push from one of the most exciting bands in Australia, to one of the biggest in the world.

The track was co-penned with producer Dann Hume (Amy Shark, Matt Corby)
  • For 18-year-old Budjerah, who grew up listening to the likes of Sam Cooke and The Clark Sisters, making music was an inevitability. Descended from the land of Bundjalung people (near Fingal Head, NSW), his debut single ‘Missing You’ was immediately added to triple j upon release, spending a week as the station’s #1 most played track. Stay tuned for his Matt Corby-produced upcoming debut EP
  • Championed by everyone from BBC 6 Music, Beats 1, KEXP, CLASH and Aussie media galore is Tasmania’s best outfit: A. Swayze & The Ghosts. Their wildly anticipated debut album Paid Salvation is out now, and was recorded in Northcote, VIC, with producer Dean Tuza (These New South Whales, Stella Donnelly)

Want more? On this week’s special ‘Tribute’ collaboration, we celebrate the life of New Zealand songwriter and ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Max Merritt. Famous for hits such as ‘Slippin’ Away’ and ‘Hey, Western Union Man’, this week sees an amazing group of musicians pay their respects, including:

  • The one and only icon that is Marcia Hines. With a career the stuff of legend, Marcia will return to Shrek The Musical in January at Brisbane’s QPAC
  • Bonafide rock legend Russell Morris, whose 2020 album Black And Blue Heart (co-produced by Bernard Fanning) debuted at #12 on the ARIA Album chart
  • Warrnambool’s Didirri, who is taking his poetic, candid songwriting on tour later this month with live shows in three Victorian locations
  • Sydney alt-pop singer and producer Andy Bull, who recently dropped his latest single ‘It’s All Connected’
  • Mia Wray, the artist whose debut upload ‘Work For Me’ blew up the triple j textline and made a fan of Elton John

Finally, our ‘From The Vault’ clip this week is iconic Sydney popsters Do Re Mi, led by the amazing Deborah Conway.

Don’t miss The Sound – Ep 6 airing this Sunday 6 December at 6pm on ABC and iview.
