MANNEQUIN PUSSY SHARE ‘PERFECT’

by the partae April 27, 2021
written by the partae

Today, Philadelphia indie punk band Mannequin Pussy share “Perfect,” the title track from their upcoming EP due out May 21. The track follows previously released “Control,” which graced “Best New Songs” lists for Entertainment Weekly, Fader, Guitar World, NPR, Paste, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and more.

CHECK OUT “PERFECT”
WATCH | LISTEN

“Perfect” comes out of months of social isolation & internet-fueled anxiety, examining the practice of condensing your daily life into a manicured stream of images for social media. “Last year, I found myself spending more time on my phone than I ever had in my life. Physically separate from other people, I spent hours of time watching other humans perform on my rectangle. I realised that through years of social media training, many of us have grown this deep desire to manicure our lives to look as perfect, as aspirational as possible,” explains the band’s vocalist/guitarist Missy on the inspiration behind the track. “We want to put ourselves out there, share our lives, our stories, our day to day – and these images and videos all shout the same thing: ‘Please look at me, please tell me I’m so perfect.’ It’s simultaneously a declaration of our confidence but edged with the desperation that seeks validation from others.”

Mannequin Pussy are ready to take you to the Sugarbush High 10-year Reunion in the music video for the track. The video, directed by the band’s vocalist/guitarist Missy, references the 1997 comedy film “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”

Check it out here.

At the start of 2020, everything was looking up for Mannequin Pussy. The band had released their third album, Patience, and was touring steadily behind it. After nearly a decade of playing, the band finally had gotten the chance to turn music into a full-time occupation. And then, COVID-19 reached the United States, rescinding life as many people knew it. For a while, it seemed like maybe the lull would be temporary, a brief pause before things could resume as they were. And then the numbers ballooned, and the months stretched on, and memories of rooms packed with strangers started to feel alien, dangerous even in imagination. Mannequin Pussy’s new Perfect EP bursts forth from those sprawling months of social isolation and internet-fueled anxiety.

After spending most of the year apart from each other and everyone else in 2020, Mannequin Pussy decided to book studio time and work together in person again. They brought two pre-written songs into the session, but opted to write new material together on the fly from the excitement of reunion. “We just figured if we forced ourselves into this situation where someone could hit ‘record,’ something might come out,” Missy says. “We’d never written that way before.” What came out of that compressed session time with Grammy Nominated producer Will Yip, are some of Mannequin Pussy’s most furious, incandescent songs yet.

Mannequin Pussy is Missy (vocals/guitar/keys), Colins “Bear” Regisford (bass), and Kaleen Reading (drums).

LA SINGER-SONGWRITER-PRODUCER MARINELLI SHARES NEW SONG ‘PITY PARTY’ ANNOUNCES DEBUT EP FUNNY BONE OUT EARLY JUNE

“Whether drawn in by his unique, 90’s grunge reminiscent voice or melancholic songwriting and delivery, marinelli creates an unmistakable atmosphere.” – Lyrical Lemonade

marinelli might be the most connected person in music you haven’t heard yet – till now. Today, marinelli, the moniker of LA based artist David Marinelli, shares a new song and video for ‘Pity Party’ – which premiered on The Zane Lowe Show overnight – alongside the announcement of his upcoming EP Funny Bone.
LISTEN TO MARINELLI’S NEW SINGLE ‘PITY PARTY’ HERE
Born from processing deep emotions, the singer-songwriter and producer unveils his self-written & produced new cut ‘Pity Party’. Sharing more on the track, marinelli explained: “Pity Party is a song about being extroverted to a debilitating degree – I wrote it last April when I was having to deal with not seeing my friends. I did a lot of reflecting on my social habits around then and decided that I didn’t have to let social anxiety rule my life anymore, and because of that this song will always be special to me!!”

The LA-based singer-songwriter-producer and musician extraordinaire has had a hand in a myriad of releases over the last few years – from being Billie Eillish’s original drummer through to producing much-hyped new projects like Spill Tab, Wallice, Australia’s Evangaline, and viral music lord Lonely God. Hell, he even scored a Subway commercial that aired during the Olympics.

Earlier in 2020 though (before everything went to sh*t) he stepped out on his own for the first time as a solo artist – and since then he has released the super fun combination of singles, ‘Turtleneck Sweater,’ ‘Candy Cigarette’, ‘Halloween’ (his first release with Australia & NZ label partner Dew Process), ‘Christmas’, and ‘Oh God’ – quickly garnering the support of extremely listenable playlists, racking up collectively over 4 million streams, and landing him on the cover of Spotify’s ‘Lorem’ playlist.

Fast forward a year and marinelli continues to produce for other artists’ projects, focused on bringing the personality of the individual project into the production, all while he rolls out his debut EP. Written and produced almost entirely by himself, the EP battles feelings that are all-too-familiar to most of us; such as loneliness, emptiness and being forgotten. In other words, prepare your broken heart.

Already racking up millions of streams and pinning himself as an artist to watch, marinelli is definitely one to keep all eyes on.

Leroy Macqueen Debut Single & Music Video OUT NOW

by the partae April 27, 2021
written by the partae

Introducing Leroy Macqueen. A self described cowfolk diva and gender non-conforming alt-western crooner. You might know Leroy as one half of wild garage punk duo The Gooch Palms, but since Leroy and partner in crime Kat Friend retired the band in early 2020, right before Covid made it’s way to Australia, Leroy has been working tirelessly on getting this new solo project up and running. After already flooring audiences across the country with a sold-out headline tour over the past summer and winning hearts as main support for DZ Deathrays and Skegss recently, it’s finally time for the release of ON THE RUN – Leroy’s debut single.

A classic, western-style tale of two lovers on the run from the law, with driving vocal rhythms and Leroy’s signature smooth, deep delivery, you better believe that this banger is an instant classic. One for the ages!

ON THE RUN was written in Leroy’s studio apartment during the harsh Melbourne lockdown and was promptly recorded around the corner at their storage shed turned recording studio as soon as they were granted their freedom! Leroy, being the ultimate DIY queen/king they are, performed, recorded and mixed the track themselves.

With an EP looming and more touring in the pipeline, Leroy will be getting back to what Leroy does best, releasing ear-worm-stuck-in-your-head-for-days tunes and continuing to serenade the house down with one of the most entertaining and heartwarming performances you’re likely to witness.

But for now, sit back, relax and sink into the hypnotising dreamworld that is – ON THE RUN.

Montréal, 6 avril 2021 – Montreal composer Simon Leoza (formerly known as Tambour) shares "L’archange", the new single from his debut album Albatross, to be released on April 30 via Rosemarie Records. Following the singles "La nuée" and "Bloom", "L’archange" reflects the important role of dialogue between the piano and the string quartet. This is the only track on the album where Leoza and the musicians performed together in the same room during recording. Originally composed on piano during a residency at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity in 2018, "L’archange" depicts the ups and downs of fusional encounters. The piano (the archangel), alone at the beginning, is slowly joined by the strings (the angels) and the piece slowly evolves with the melodious arrangement of the four voices of the string ensemble. Both luminous and nostalgic, "L’archange" is a hopeful track and undoubtedly the most personal on the album. Albatross is Simon Leoza's first full-length album, bringing together unique pieces that the composer has accumulated and shaped over the past six years. Like the path of the seabird that flies great distances, the composition and production of Albatross spanned several years of musical exploration and overseas journeys. After two creative residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, Simon Leoza flies to Iceland where he begins pre-production of the album with fellow artist Snorri Hallgrímsson. Inspired by the awe-inspiring Scandinavian nature, he then spent some time in the Faroe Islands, a subarctic archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean. Back in Quebec, he teamed up with Blaise Borboën-Léonard (Queen KA, Lydia Képinski) who co-produced the album with him. Albatross was recorded at Montreal’s Studio Makina and at Studio Le Nid in St-Adrien. Leoza took advantage of his countryside trip to use the acoustics of the village church and record with the string quartet. The album’s 10 original pieces go from the grandiose to the intimate, characteristic of the composer's universe. More delicate pieces intermingle with the lively emotions of more energetic pieces. Rich in instrumentation and electronic textures, Albatross is a daring emotional journey, subtly mixed by Tonio Morin-Vargas (Flore Laurentienne, Bon Enfant). If the artist's previous EP Constellations (ou comment arrêter le temps) explored time and astronomy, Albatross portrays a personal and authentic travel account of wonder and curiosity, somewhere between the vertigo of the mystic and the comfort of reality... Simon Leoza's cinematic, ambient and moving music evokes Nils Frahm and Max Richter as much as Ólafur Arnalds and Philip Glass. Endowed with a natural versatility and without any musical training, he has instinctively developed his own musical language over the years, which he communicates to his collaborators and musicians for the production of his works. With over 3.5 million streams online, his first three EPs captured the attention of national and international critics, who described his works as melancholic and grandiose, blending mellow acoustics and dreamlike landscapes steeped in nostalgia. The “La nuée” music video, which is approaching 110,000 views on YT and Vimeo is part of the FIFA Official Selection - International Festival of Films on Art (programming - VIDEOCLIPS). PRAISE FOR SHADY NASTY

“song by song, shady nasty are trademarking the untrademarkable..”
Declan Byrne, triple j

“Channeling everyone from the likes of King Krule to Ratking or Iceage, their fusion of their jazz and classical backgrounds with frenetic punk energy makes for an enthralling listen every time.”
Purple Sneakers

“one of Australia’s most exciting bands right now”
Wickedd Childd

“Jittery and tense blasts of sketchy rock that sounds like kids born in the late 90s have discovered some early Helmet or Mark of Cain records. This is good rowdy stuff.”
VICE

Today, Sydney’s Shady Nasty share their first new music since last year’s acclaimed debut EP Bad Posture, which saw love from the likes of The FADER, VICE, Stereogum, NME and more. ‘IBIZA’ is a menacing, barreling slice of Shady Nasty’s dichotomous punk, vocalist Kevin Stathis’ nonchalant spoken-word delivery at odds with the swirling guitars and crushing bass behind him.

‘IBIZA’ sits at the lavish intersection between vlogging, gymming, clubbing and clout. From binge-watching Mike Thurston & Jake Paul on Youtube to blasting David Guetta & Avicii in the Uber; from rounds of vodka raspberries at the Ivy to luxury shopping sprees at Westfield; ‘IBIZA’ is a menacing ode to the extravagant sounds, aesthetics and cultures that are typically rejected by counterculture.

Written and performed by Shady Nasty, ‘IBIZA’ was recorded by The Ruben’s William Zeglis, and mixed by Grammy Award-winning and multi-Platinum selling producer Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Charli XCX, Weezer, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Mars Volta). The accompanying video was directed and shot by Luca Watson (drummer) and Harry Welsh, edited by Luca Watson and VFX by Curtis Agnew.

With backgrounds in jazz and classical music, Shady Nasty subvert expectations. Inspired by the likes of Show Me The Body, King Krule, Iceage, Low Life and Mount Kimbie, the Sydney trio play an energetic and weirdo breed of punk that skirts the boundaries of the genre.

Their art offers an accelerated vision of the online colliding with their personal lives. Coupled with a raucous live show, the trio create a compelling world at the boundaries of alternative punk and contemporary hip-hop: modding cars, gymming, family, digital obsessions and making ends meet.

WOLF ALICE RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘SMILE’ ALBUM BLUE WEEKEND OUT FRIDAY 11 JUNE 2021

by the partae April 27, 2021
written by the partae

Today Wolf Alice release their uncompromising new single ‘Smile’. The track was inspired by lead singer Ellie Rowsell’s desire to fight back against those who try to define her, and is the second single from their highly-anticipated third album, Blue Weekend, the follow up to the Mercury Prize winning Visions of a Life.

‘Smile’ is carried along on a tide of visceral energy, a song destined to be a live favourite. The band envisaged this during their time recording Blue Weekend in Brussels during lockdown. Rowsell states, “this is one of the songs we wrote thinking that we would play it live. I miss that feeling of singing on stage. It’s like screaming into a pillow or something — you can get away with being more nasty. There’s a whole other part of me missing.”

‘Smile’ is accompanied by a video directed by Jordan Hemmingway (Gucci, Raf Simons, Comme Des Garçons), the band’s second collaboration with Hemmingway, following previous single ‘The Last Man On Earth’ (watch). The saturated visuals of the band in full-flow, combined with the casting of riotous punk extras and pub locals, provide the ideal hedonistic backdrop to the track.

‘The Last Man On Earth’ spent 7 weeks on the BBC Radio 1 A-List. It was premiered by Annie Mac as her Hottest Record In The World, further cementing a longstanding relationship between the band and Annie. Last week, the band released a special live version of ‘The Last Man On Earth’ which can be viewed below.

Wolf Alice are Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). It has been a decade since the band began as a duo of Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie, then later expanding to a four-piece, with Joel Amey and Theo Ellis joining the group. Since then, the band saw their 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool soar to #2 on the UK charts, their sophomore album Visions Of A Life win the 2018 Hyundai Mercury prize, and a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance. The band played a massive 187 shows on the Visions Of A Life world tour – including a sold out Alexandra Palace, 2 sold out dates at Brixton Academy, and a set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

It was no surprise that creating a follow-up to Visions Of A Life was a daunting task. The record was a huge success, which subsequently led to many months spent on tour – with intercontinental flights, hotels and long-bus journeys taking a toll on the band.

The band decamped to an Airbnb in Somerset, and it was here that they reconfigured who they were together, far away from festival stages, tour buses, awards shows, and fans. They cemented their friendship and set to work on some fledgling demos in a converted church. These demos evolved into Blue Weekend, a record produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk, Brian Eno, Florence + The Machine) who has aided the band in refining their sound to an even sharper point. Rowsell’s personal storytelling is at the core of Blue Weekend, an album that sees Wolf Alice embrace a newfound boldness and vulnerability in equal measure.

Blue Weekend will be released on 11 June 2021 and will be available on limited edition red transparent vinyl, yellow transparent vinyl and green vinyl, as well as black vinyl, CD & all DSPs.

INDIE-POP SINGER AND SONGWRITER, LAUREN DAY, RELEASES AN EMPOWERING DEBUT EP

by the partae April 26, 2021
written by the partae

New Zealand born, Sydney based singer and songwriter, Lauren Day, has announced the release of her new self-titled debut EP Lauren Day, available today.

LISTEN HERE

The highly-anticipated EP is made up of three tracks: Summer Lover, a dreamy, indie-pop song produced by Xavier Dunn, about a summer romance which evokes a warm and nostalgic feeling for the listener through the vinyl crackle and harp, accompanied by dreamy harmonies; On & On,  a 90’s inspired production by Matt Hurt which references pushing through self-doubt and re-igniting your passions and the final track, Cala Gonone Nights, a cool, feel-good summer song inspired by long, balmy European summers, produced by Alex Preston and featuring live guitar and saxophone samples set to put anybody in a good mood.

Lauren grew up in Wellington, New Zealand and has always loved music and singing. Since moving to Sydney, Lauren has recorded seven tracks and produced six music videos as an independent artist, working with some of Sydney’s upcoming talents to bring her visions to life. Her music encompasses smooth, soulful vocals and contagious hooks, combined with effortless delivery through dreamy, chilled out, lo-fi pop with RnB and neo soul influences. Through her music, Lauren sings about love, nostalgic romances, chasing summer, emotional struggles and relationships aiming to empower her female listeners.

“I wanted to create music that was uplifting but also easy listening. I wanted the songs to spark a memory whether it be about a holiday or summer with friends to that feeling of over-coming a hard time.

I’m really attracted to dreamy, whimsical sounds so when I wrote the songs I had used a lot of bells/marimba type sounds that we then replaced with instruments like the harp and saxophone in production. At the time of recording the EP, I had just returned from an amazing summer holiday and was about to get married which is why two of the songs are very summery and reflect on love,” says, Lauren.

On & On was written about a personal breakthrough I had in my music and my self-confidence to stop doubting myself and take time to discover who I am. The repetition in the chorus of the lyrics “on and on, and on and on” really represents the slow process of working through challenges day by day.”

For more information on Lauren Day visit laurenday.net

Catch Lauren performing live at The Foundry 616 in Sydney at 5pm on Sunday 30 May

Run Over Dogs

by the partae April 26, 2021
written by the partae

What is your name and role within Run Over Dogs?

My name is Szabolcs Czeglédi and I’m the singer and guitarist of Run Over Dogs.

How did you first start playing music?

Listened to a lot of Nirvana and Pixies as a teenager and got my first guitar when I was 14.

Where are you currently based?

We’re based in Budapest.

How did the band form?

We’re childhood friends with Máté (Máté Gál – bass) as we’ve been playing in rival bands in a small Hungarian city called Kecskemét. I always knew we’d form a band together once we both moved to Budapest. I met Maxi (Tamás Juhász – drums) and Roni (Áron Vilczek – guitar) when I moved to the capital in 2009, started to play music together in 2011 and were waiting for Máté to move to Budapest and form the band in 2012.

You’ve just released your new album ‘Now Let The Monsters Shine’ what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound and songwriting were both influenced by feelings this time.  Looking back over the past five years, it seems like a minute where I’m sitting on a propeller plane during turbulence, the chips bags and other merchandise products are flying in the air like colourful Tetris pieces as they land on top of each other in the wrong order so every second is game over and a new game starts. What’s even worse is that while I was sitting on this plane, a series of events – incomprehensible to common sense – shook the world. I got stuck in the room for weeks during the first months of pandemic, sometimes I walked in random forests and for the first time in my life I’ve been thinking soberly and realistically about what had happened to me in the last 30 years and especially in the last 5. Then we’ve spent a lot of time experimenting with the sounds to make sure we’ll express these feelings the best way we can.

How did you go about writing the album?

Most of the songs were written on an acoustic guitar and got their final forms later in the studio. I felt much stronger after composing the songs, I became addicted to writing for weeks and it might even be perceptible that the last songs were written by a more balanced person than the ones before.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

The album was made in the RH studio – that is also the rehearsal room of the band – so the calming work pace and environment were ensured. Máté Gál, the band’s bassist was the album’s sound engineer, he was responsible for record / mix / master and Soma Nóvé (Middlemist Red, Mordái, Samurai Drive) was the producer of the album. Soma has a prominent role in the orchestration, the dramaturgy and the structure of the songs, and he also brought a new approach with striving for perfection in all details, which was less typical of the band before.

It’s been a while since the last release, any reason for the break?

We’ve had very intense writing and touring periods between 2012 and 2017 and we burnt out quickly. I didn’t find my place on the stage in the last three years whilst I also lost my self-confidence as a composer.

How did it feel to be writing and recording again?

After each recorded track, I felt like I was taking a brick out of my bag and walking home more and more lightly from the studio.

What do this album mean to you?

Now I really think I asked for my first guitar as a teenager to write this album because it made me realize how important it is to me to express my feelings through lyrics and music.

Please tell us about the connection with trauma processing and the creation of this album:

Every track on this album is a monster that for thirty years I raised in silence until they took control over me and forced me into living my life as a monster with them. For the past five years – since I began to reveal my secrets that guarded them – they have grown into giants and delivered coordinated blows against me at the most unexpected times. Writing this album exorcised my demons, my monsters.

If Covid permits do you have any plans to tour?

We’d love to play an album release show early fall 2021 in Budapest, fingers crossed. Our second US tour is also planned for fall 2022.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I think Big Thief, Amen Dunes and Perfume Genius are my top 3 favorite artists these days.

What do you like to do away from music?

Exploring cozy restaurants while traveling with my wife! And playing tennis!

What’s planned for 2021?

Finding the smoothest way to get back to the circle of life.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favorites are the tapas plates of Pata Negra Budapest, especially the Chorizo Al Vino Tinto and the Jamon Con Espinaces Chorizo.

Where are you currently based? Sydney, having recently relocated from Melbourne just prior to lockdown. How did you first start playing music? Growing up, my parents made me learn classical piano (which I hated), but in retrospect I’m grateful to have that foundation and understanding of music. I ended up completing AMEB 8th Grade piano, however my heart has always been in contemporary music. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I started to write my own songs, around the same time I became obsessed with pop punk music (e.g. Avril Lavigne and Blink-182). That’s when I bought my first guitar and naturally started writing and singing my own songs. For many years I just kept these songs to myself. It wasn't until I went to uni that I first performed live at an open mic night in Melbourne.  What's been happening recently? I've been busy launching my brand new project FORWARD FOX, with the first track 'Retrograde' coming out last Friday :) Other than that, I've been keeping busy writing and producing music for my own project as well as for other artists and also for film/screen.  You've shifted from your existing project FLUIR (dance-pop) to this new project FORWARD FOX (melodic techno & house) what prompted the shift in projects and genre? Shortly after relocating, I enrolled in Ableton’s Music Production Course at the Liveschool education facility in Sydney. Through completion of this course, it widened my musical theory and curiosity for composition outside the electronic dance-pop genres (i.e. outside my existing project FLUIR). Naturally, I started writing and producing music to explore these new avenues and to further develop my own songwriting and production skill sets. During this stage of personal development and growth musically, I wrote a handful of ambient melodic house compositions including 'Retrograde'. Given the contrasting genres when comparing my existing project FLUIR (dance indie-pop) to the melodic tracks I wrote during lockdown, this led me to launch my new project FORWARD FOX. Your debut single under FORWARD FOX 'Retrograde' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Whilst I love all genres of music, in my spare time I enjoy mostly listening to techno, electronic and house music. Naturally, this has influenced my own personal development in sound design and songwriting. FORWARD FOX is a natural step in providing an outlet for me to share and develop new sounds and compositions that genuinely inspire me.  How did you go about writing Retrograde? It wasn't until the initial lockdown period that I found I had more free time on my hands. I started playing around on my midi keyboard and remember coming up with the piano lead that is introduced in the second half of the track. From there I built everything around that lead melody. The overall songwriting process was really enjoyable and easy. I ended up writing the overall track within a couple of hours. It then took several months to refine and finish the track! Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? I produced 'Retrograde' on my own at home on my laptop during the initial covid lockdown. I don't own any hardware so everything was created in the box. The majority of synth sound design was created using my favourite plugin UVI Falcon.  Doug Wright (Fishing, Body Promise, Ten Brains etc) mixed and Brendan Zacharias mastered the track at Cirrus Audio in Sydney.  How did you approach the recording/production process? I usually start by listening to a whole bunch of music to ignite an idea or direction to take. I try not to think too much or put too much pressure on myself to come up with an idea that's 'good enough', as this internal pressure kills the creative process. Generally, I start by looping a kick drum and then play piano or a bassline over the top to try to find an idea I like. I then build the track from there. I try to add as much as I can during the initial writing process before refining and deleting elements later during the arrangement and mixes stages.  Who are you listening to at the moment? My favourite artists I have on rotation at the moment are Roy Blues, Juno Mamba and Made in Paris. Go check them out if you haven't done so already! What do you like to do away from music? I like to exercise, read, listen to podcasts and go out to see live music.  What's planned for 2021? I have a handful of new releases coming out that will take me all the way through to the end of 2021. I also have a few live shows coming up that I will be announcing soon.  Favourite food and place to hangout?  My local kebab shop. Please include links to socials and website.

It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I started to write my own songs, around the same time I became obsessed with pop punk music (e.g. Avril Lavigne and Blink-182). That’s when I bought my first guitar and naturally started writing and singing my own songs. For many years I just kept these songs to myself. It wasn’t until I went to uni that I first performed live at an open mic night in Melbourne.

What’s been happening recently?
I’ve been busy launching my brand new project FORWARD FOX, with the first track ‘Retrograde’ coming out last Friday 🙂 Other than that, I’ve been keeping busy writing and producing music for my own project as well as for other artists and also for film/screen.

You’ve shifted from your existing project FLUIR (dance-pop) to this new project FORWARD FOX (melodic techno & house) what prompted the shift in projects and genre?

Shortly after relocating, I enrolled in Ableton’s Music Production Course at the Liveschool education facility in Sydney. Through completion of this course, it widened my musical theory and curiosity for composition outside the electronic dance-pop genres (i.e. outside my existing project FLUIR). Naturally, I started writing and producing music to explore these new avenues and to further develop my own songwriting and production skill sets. During this stage of personal development and growth musically, I wrote a handful of ambient melodic house compositions including ‘Retrograde’. Given the contrasting genres when comparing my existing project FLUIR (dance indie-pop) to the melodic tracks I wrote during lockdown, this led me to launch my new project FORWARD FOX.

Your debut single under FORWARD FOX ‘Retrograde’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Where are you currently based? S: Belgrave bitches. T: Brunswick East! How did you first start playing music? T: Ever since I can remember, Sean has played music. One day as an early teen, he picked up mum’s abandoned acoustic guitar and found after tinkering, he could play pretty much anything… this was the same with any instrument you put in front of him. I, on the other hand, came to it way later. At 28, It was like a light got flicked inside my brain and I couldn’t stop the flow of these strange & archaic songs from pouring out of my brain. Accompanied with a plastic toy tambourine, I recorded everything on the voice memo app of my phone & went for it. I sent every strange and childlike song to Sean, which led to us finally recording this album together. How did The Urban Crowley Collective first come to be? T: When we were kids, (children of the 90’s) we’d record ourselves on our tape deck. We’d do covers of Elvis and Beach Boys… and cheesy 90’s commercials- Decore (a shampoo commercial) being a popular favourite of mine. After one particularly banging rendition of Decore, Sean back announced to our millions of imaginary fans… “That was, THE URBAN CROWLEY COLLECTIVE!” That cassette then just sat in a dusty cupboard for years, and by chance it was found whilst we were making the record. So that's the genesis of the name. Sean’s now a film composer and I’m an Actor, so we would occasionally work together on other peoples projects. So when out of the blue I decided that I was a musician too, Sean was where I turned … now we have an album. What's been happening recently? T: We’ve just released our first single and music video ‘A God I Can Relate To’, so all my attention has been focused on this. Also a series I acted in at the start of the year named ‘Hard Times To Fall In Love’, has also just premiered online over at hardtimestv.com It’s been awesome celebrating this gem with the world. Your debut album 'Born of A Dying Star' will be released later this year, what influenced the sound and songwriting? S: I think I was just having one my periodical 60’s/70’s throwback sessions after Bowie died. So I was listening to a bunch of Bowie, Beatles, Beach Boys and even getting into Wings for the first time. So after that I made the conscious decision to write what I call “songy” songs, when Tegan hit me up to start making music together. So timing really. How did you go about writing the music? S: I just demoed all the tracks using different toys at different times, and then used the demo’s to arrange for Tegs’ new vocal parts. And then we charted the tracks for a small ensemble, so we could track them using more traditional recording processes, which was super fun. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? S: My go to man for all my work across the last decade has been Luke Postill, who plays a whole bunch of guitars, bass and pedal steel on the record. So he helped track the original band sessions and then we both shared all the Producing and Mixing tasks. How did you approach the recording process? S: Luke, Tegan & I performed all the rhythm section parts together with BJ Morrizonkle on piano, who I was already a mega fan of and Daniel Brates on drums, so it def felt like an pretty special band. Everything they did was pitch perfect. And we smashed the spine of the record out in one massive 14hr day in a big empty basketball stadium. All live, spill in mics, the whole shebang. Then we added a few years worth of over dubs. Orchestra’s, percussion, tons of vocals. It’s pretty dense sonically. What programs/equipment did you use? S: Luke & I share a portable Pro Tools rig which we use for band sessions. Some very sweet sounding mics and pre’s. It’s nice feeling a little bit pro at this stage in our career. The first single 'A God I Can Relate To' was released on 23 April 2021, what does this track mean to you? S: All the tracks on this album tend to reflect a perspective on mortality in one way or another. But this is a funny one for us to start with, as lyrically it’s about yearning to be successful and watching others get ahead, and then dealing with that never ending narrative as we age and gain new perspectives. Ya know :) You also have a second single 'Oh Lord, Please Bestowesth Upon My Son His Daily Dose Of Dimethyltryptamine' to be released 16 May 2021, how did this track come to be and what is the significance to you? S: This is an oldy, and has appeared once before on a weird little EP I self-produced years ago, but I’ve always thought it had more life in it. It’s another reflection on what it means to live a life, and plays out a funny little pantomime between someone who has just died and is now standing at the pearly gates reflecting on what was the whole point of it all. I’m not religious myself, but I do like the using these type of archetypal characters in my work. God’s a gas. But there are few gems in the lyrics. Who are you listening to at the moment? T: Sappho’s debut single ‘Flex’!!!! Also Lana Del Ray’s new album, and I’m loving Maple Glider’s new tracks. What do you like to do away from music? T: Acting always!… taking pics, surfing & hiking with my fella and spending time with my gals! S: We’re both like writing. We’re both separately working on books at the moment so watch this space. That and raising my three manic humans. What's planned for 2021? T: Same thing we do every year…. try to take over the world! Favourite food and place to hangout? T: NYALA Ethiopian on Brunswick St!!! Also… home hahaha. Going back to Mum & Dads for Mums cooking. yum.

RYAN FENNIS & VOIDHOOD Sign to Pointer Recordings Share debut collaborative single & video ‘Tapped’

L-R: Ryan Fennis, Voidhood (Will Klep)

Pointer Recordings is proud to introduce Canberra artists Ryan Fennis and Voidhood. ‘Tapped‘ is the first release from the duo’s collaborative project and is accompanied by an electrifying video – watch via the image below.

Morphing together their bass-heavy, sample-driven electronic styles, the pair shape an unstable sound reflecting the increasingly distorted world we find ourselves in. Inspired by their everyday lives and the drive to create something unique and true to self, through ‘Tapped’, Ryan Fennis and Will Klep (Voidhood) upend the preconceived ideas of mediocracy associated with the city they come from. The single attempts to highlight that every person, every location and everything has a depth greater than face value.

Ryan Fennis experiments with a collage-style songwriting process and bent production sensibility. Fennis explores alternate realities, the confines and potentials in genre and culture, and what it is to create in the technological age through his music and visuals. Ryan’s EP Iceberg was released in October 2020.

Voidhood toys with his listeners as an unreliable narrator, warping his baritone voice between abrasive flows and crystallised auto-tune. His production blends experimental electronic and goth tied up in heavy 808s and dissolving sounds. Voidhood’s upcoming debut record PSYCHTHRILLER intends to evoke the insular, ambiguous qualities of films from the genre of the same name.

Together, Ryan Fennis and Voidhood attempt to give shape and sound to what it means to live in a present-day, technological dystopia, centred in Australia’s capital city. On joining the Pointer Recordings family, the duo share:

“Over the last few years, I’ve been experimenting with my sound to something that feels truly myself, and waiting for the right people who want to get behind it. Pointer seems like the perfect fit to me – they’re genuine people and they genuinely fuck with the sound and look that I’m developing.” – Ryan Fennis

“Thrilled to be joining Pointer with our collaboration. There’s so much room for more experimentation and wild sounds in Australian music so having a label like Pointer championing this eclectic roster of artists has me ecstatic. They feel future-facing, and unafraid to throw aside old models in favour of artists and supporting their visions.” – Voidhood

“Pues” is the Hot New Hit from Multi-Platinum Recording Artists R3HAB, Luis Fonsi and Sean Paul

Artists: R3HAB, Luis Fonsi, Sean Paul
Title: Pues
Label: CYBERPVNK/Universal Music

In a collision of Dance and Latin Pop‘s hit-making superstars, R3HAB, Luis Fonsi, and Sean Paul join forces for their new single “Pues” on CYB3RPVNK/Universal Music. Bringing together the best of melodic electronic beats and sensuous rhythms, the track brings to mind dancing through warm summer nights in tropical locales with beautiful strangers. Part dance melody, part Latin-infused honey, “Pues” has all the makings of a summertime anthem for fans of both genres. The sultry accompanying music video features TikTok superstar and Instagram sensation Valeria Sandoval to set the perfect mood for this single. “Pues” is not R3HAB‘s first venture into Latin pop; he previously collaborated with TINI & Reik for last year’s sensation “Bésame” (I Need You). “Pues” is the catchiest of songs, one soaked with abundant sunshine, pulling the listener close and into a dance that ought never to end. Press play on “Pues” and let it swim through the airwaves with its pulsating bassline and luring vocals.

“It’s always a pleasure to work with industry legends such as Luis Fonsi and Sean Paul. They are both experts of their craft, and together we came up with a reggaeton-dance record perfect for warm summer nights. I’ve been having a great time making music with artists across the Latin world, like TINI, Reik, Rauw Alejandro, Hungria, and MC Jacare. I’m inspired by the diversity of music cultures within Latin music, and have many more to explore. “Pues” is different from everything I’ve released so far, and I’m glad to give it over to our fans now. I hope you love it as much as I do.” – R3HAB

“I love collaborating and exploring all kinds of genres. So I was very excited when the opportunity came to work with two music giants such as R3HAB and Sean Paul. It was a lot of fun recording “Pues” and can’t wait for everyone to listen and dance to it.” – Luis Fonsi

“This song is dopeness an Luis Fonsi is an artist I have a lot of respect for! R3HAB blew this one up like a firework!” – Sean Paul

About R3HAB:

Dutch/Moroccan DJ and producer Fadil El Ghoul, better known as R3HAB, has been trailblazing his way through dance music for the better part of the last decade. From his breakthrough hit remix of Afrojack, Pitbull and Ne-Yo‘s “Give Me Everything” to his dance anthems, such as “All Around The World (La La La)” and “Lullaby,” which have collectively amassed over 600M streams, to his collaborations with the likes of ZAYN, Andy Grammer, Sofia Carson, Olivia Holt and more, R3HAB has proven to be one of the most talented and forward-thinking artists in the game. He partnered with Spotify and GATTÜSO to create the first-ever official “mint” single release. In 2016 he founded his label CYB3RPVNK, which passed one billion streams on its catalog within the first two years since its inception. R3HAB himself continues to evolve and diversify his sound by working with a variety of artists around the globe, experimenting with everything from hip-hop to pop through his collaborations. With his combination of innate artistry and innovative attitude, in 2021 R3HAB is continuing his journey among electronic music’s elite.

THE BRONX DROP NEW SINGLE ‘SUPERBLOOM’ SINGLE ARTWORK BY AUSTRALIAN ARTISTS DABSMYLA

by the partae April 23, 2021
written by the partae

LA’s finest, The Bronx today release a new single ’Superbloom’.  The announcement comes off the back of their recent new album news, the highly anticipated Bronx VI will be released on August 27th via Cooking Vinyl. Artwork for ‘Superbloom’ was designed by Australian husband-and-wife visual artist, DabsMyla.

The Bronx frontman Matt Caughthran says of the new single ‘’Superbloom is a search for deeper meaning. Musically, the song originated from our bass player Brad Magers, his first official offering on a Bronx record. The chorus was co-written by guitarist Joby Ford, so there is a sonic push/pull that takes place for the first time in Bronx history. Lyrically, the song is about a day I spent lost in the California wildflowers with an old friend. Reflecting on the past in a somewhat desperate attempt to make sense of the present. A very inspired song beginning to end, one of my favourites on the record.”

Each of the 11 songs on Bronx VI will be available as individual, limited-edition 7-inch singles featuring unique artwork from a hand-picked group of artists including Estevan Oriol, Craig Stecyk, and Tim Armstrong. Artwork for ‘Superbloom’ was designed by Australian husband-and-wife visual artist, DabsMyla. One lucky fan will find a surprise original DabsMyla painting inside the 7-inch sleeve.

DabsMyla said “We were introduced to The Bronx years ago when we were living in Australia. Our friend we were painting graffiti with had the first Bronx album playing in his car while we were driving to the spot and from that point on we were both hooked. Being fans and getting to create artwork for the ‘Superbloom’ single has been an honor!”

Album pre-orders are available now with the collection available digitally, on CD and with a number of vinyl variants including an orange and blue galaxy Australian webstore exclusive.

ABOUT THE BRONX

The Bronx formed in 2002, releasing their self-titled debut album the following year. Over the Los Angeles-based band’s 19 year career, The Bronx have released five original albums under their original namesake, and three albums under their alter ego, Mariachi El Bronx. Both iterations of the now legendary SoCal outfit have been hailed for harnessing the “unleashed cries of youthful blue-collar anguish” (Los Angeles Times), and for writing “hard-hitting and catchy hard rock tracks” (Loudwire). The Bronx is Matt Caughthran (vocals), Joby J. Ford (guitar), Ken Horne (guitar), Brad Magers (bass) and Joey Castillo (drums).

RE-IMAGINED CONCERT EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE ON DVD+CD, BLU-RAY+CD, VHS, WITH AUDIO ONLY DIGITAL RELEASE

“The nearly two-hour show was part music, part comedy, part documentary, with cinematic production values that rival those of a home video release. In fact, ‘The Night They Came Home’ deserves a Blu-ray version – it’s that good.” – Consequence

“As you’d probably expect from Mr. Bungle, the livestream was highly entertaining, and they cared as much about comedy as they cared about putting on a killer metal show.” – Brooklyn Vegan

Mr. Bungle, whose Halloween 2020 streaming special, The Night They Came Home captured the Northern California-born band performing songs from their freshly released album, The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo, interspersed with behind-the-scenes footage, surprise cameos and a few surprise covers, release the nearly two-hour film on June 11 via Ipecac Recordings/Liberator Music.

The Night They Came Home which was directed by Jack Bennett, is available as a CD + Blu-Ray, CD + DVD, VHS, and digitally. The CD portion features remastered audio, while the film features Bungle’s performance, Neil Hamburger’s opening set, three official music videos (‘Raping Your Mind’, ‘Eracist’, and ‘Sudden Death’), as well as extended behind-the-scenes footage. The VHS release, limited to 1000 collectible copies, is an edited, performance-only portion of the film.

The Night They Came Home track list:

  1.  Won’t You Be My Neighbor (Fred Rogers cover)
  2.  Anarchy Up Your Anus
  3.  Raping Your Mind
  4.  Bungle Grind
  5.  Methematics
  6.  Hell Awaits/Summer Breeze (Slayer/Seals & Croft medley/cover)
  7.  Eracist
  8.  World Up My Ass (Circle Jerks cover)
  9.  Glutton For Punishment
  10. Hypocrites/Habla Español O Muere (S.O.D. cover)
  11. Spreading The Thighs of Death
  12. Loss for Words
  13. Sudden Death
  14. Loss of Control (Van Halen cover)

News of The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo arrival, the band’s first new music in over 20 years, was received with great fanfare. The album news followed a spate of sold out 2020 live performances, which saw Mr. Bungle playing to some of its biggest audiences ever. The album, which is a proper recording of Mr. Bungle’s much traded, yet unreleased, 1986 demo cassette of the same name, was declared “one of the best thrash albums of the year” by Decibel, Rolling Stone said “their reboot is a feast of ingenious riffs, unexpected tempo shifts, and pure manic energy…,” and Stereogum offered “…Mr. Bungle are reliving their very earliest days and kicking a whole lot of ass in the process.” Revolver featured Mike Patton on their Fall cover, saying “After 15 years of inactivity and 21 since their last album, avant-metal weirdos Mr. Bungle reappeared from the mists of time to re-record their 1986 demo. Not content to merely rehash their high school days, core trio Mike Patton, Trey Spruance and Trevor Dunn enlisted help from Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian and former Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. The result is — in the words of super fan Eric Andre — pure, awesome ‘carve 666 into your desk and get in detention’ metal.”

About Mr. Bungle

Mr. Bungle was formed in an impoverished lumber and fishing town by a trio of curious, volatile teenagers. Trey Spruance, Mike Patton and Trevor Dunn beget the amorphous “band” in 1985 up in Humboldt County, Calif., sifting through a variety of members until around 1989 when they settled on a lineup that managed to get signed to Warner Bros. Records. No one really knows how this happened and it remains a complete mystery that even the algorithms of the internet can’t decode. Up until 2000 they released three albums (Mr. Bungle in 1991, Disco Volante in 1995 and California in 1999), toured a good portion of the Western hemisphere and avoided any sort of critical acclaim. Some argue that the band subsequently broke up but there is also no proof of this. What is true is that they took 20 years off from performing under said moniker while they pursued various other musics that, in contrast, paid the rent.

Praise for Bachelor

“two slow-burn songwriters who sound like they compounded each other’s daring on their first single, ‘Anything at All’…the track continually builds and bristles, starting with a skulking bass line and peaking with an onslaught of frenetic guitars.” – The New York Times

“The songs combine vivid imagery rooted in intimacy and desire with a gnawing fear of climate change and walking alone at night, among other things. The relationship between ambient anxiety and warm, immediate comfort provides the album’s central tension, in its own way a reminder of why it’s nice to have a friend when everything else seems to be crumbling.” – Pitchfork

“collaborations between artists we know and love can turn into really inspiring music and that’s just happened [with Bachelor]” – NPR Music’s Bob Boilen on All Songs Considered

“‘Anything At All’ an expertly designed piece of indie rock: a tasteful bass bump anchors the track, while guitars, synths, and pianos flicker anxiously during the verses before a big guitar hook that’s all carom and crunch, like a tidal wave on repeat.” – Rolling Stone

“A groovy ballad all about unrequited, queer love, the sound feels fresh and new for both artists”  – Billboard

“highlight the duality between restraint and release…Bachelor appears to be a push for both Kempner and Duterte into a more eerie, post-punk direction that doesn’t compromise on intimacy.” – them.

“a sparkling mix of both artist’s distinctive sounds.” – NYLON

“an explosive new team-up dripping with fuzz…’Stay in the Car’ careens wildly, thrillingly, and full of feverish promise.” – MTV

“When two indie rockers beloved in their own right team up for a collaborative project, you know you’re in for a treat.” – UPROXX

Bachelor – the collaborative project of Jay Som’s Melina Duterte and Palehound’s Ellen Kempner – will release its debut album Doomin’ Sun on May 28th via Milk! Records / Remote Control Records, and today the duo share another single off of the record.

Of the country-inflected ‘Sick of Spiraling‘ the band says “Sick of Spiraling is one of the last songs we wrote and recorded together in Topanga. Both of us initially tried to play drums on the song but the groove wasn’t right so we enlisted help from James Krivchenia. He came over for a day and drummed on a few songs on the record, he really brought this song to life with his unique style. Ellen had the riff in her voice memos for a while, and had originally imagined it as a slow kinda melancholic song. Once we got together and listened back to the riff we heard it a whole new way as an upbeat driving song. After that Ellen wrote lyrics inspired by driving on tour and the rush and anxiety of being completely untethered and unprotected on the open road.” Listen to the song now HERE and read more about it via Rolling Stone.

Written and recorded in Topanga, CA over the course of two weeks in January of 2020, pre-pandemic, Doomin’ Sun is a record steeped in friendship. Kempner and Duterte hybridised their individual songwriting talents, producing a collection that slips between moods with ease and showcases their lyrical prowess. While the album features collaborations with the likes of Big Thief’s Buck Meek and James Krivchenia, as well as Duterte’s partner and Routine-counterpart Annie Truscott of Chastity Belt, the record was largely made by the two musicians in isolation as a fitting precursor to the forthcoming year. Creating the space to explore significant themes from queerness to climate change, the collection also finds Bachelor experiencing pure, unadulterated joy: the kind of joy that can only come from creating, laughing, and having a ridiculous amount of fun with a close friend.
