If you’ve been missing late night clubbing vibes a’la Ibiza, look no further than California-based artist Sevenn‘s new EP. Appropriately titled “Hybrid Techno,” the EP features four brand new tracks that cross the spectrum of house and techno, transporting the listener to the infamous White Isle. The EP opens with the dark progressive gem “Naked in the Rain.” Next up is “Alexander” with its arabesque instrumental elements and deep, mysterious vibes; just hearing the frog intonations will have you imagining you’re navigating a dark path to a clandestine jungle party. Sevenn turns the page with “Kanima,” a groovy and afro-house influenced track that sets a lively tone for the rest of the sonic journey, before driving it home with the dancefloor-filler house track “Paris to Berlin.” Read on below to learn more about Sevenn‘s inspiration behind the EP.

“I fell in love with techno in 2017 after spending around 6 days straight clubbing in Ibiza at clubs like Amnesia, Pacha and DC10, which changed my life. To me, it felt like what it must have been like for teenagers in the 60s to hear Jimi Hendrix for the first time, just completely revolutionary. So sonically authentic, vibrant, dramatic, dark… Each night felt like wandering into a dark forest you knew you shouldn’t be in but felt like you had to explore. I wanted to bring all those elements from melodic techno, afro house, deep house, and techno into a fresh new package, with powerful sounds, sometimes slightly detuned and twisted to play with more organic synthesis. Using the word “Hybrid” gives me (and other producers) room to explore this incredible genre and bring a new and charming sound to the dance floors.” – Sevenn

Kevin Brauer has exploded into the international electronic music stage as Sevenn. In his repertory he has four global hits: “Colors Of The Rainbow” produced in collaboration with Kathy, and successful releases such as “BYOB” and “The Wall,” produced with Alok, which reached over 50 million streams. Sevenn‘s massive collaboration with Tïesto “BOOM” debuted on Ultra Music Festival Miami in 2017. The single’s 2018’s version with Gucci Mane on the vocals had peaked #14 on Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic charts amassing over 120 million streams on Spotify. Sevenn played at some of the world’s most celebrated festivals, such as Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, and Creamfields.

Pekoe Cat is multi-instrumentalist/producer Kyle Woolven. Like the city he comes from (Belleville, Ontario) Woolven is relatively unknown, but that does not stop his drive to create and progress. With the release of his new album in the fall (which is also called “Belleville”), Woolven continues to show that creativity comes first and a fan base comes second . . . or fourth. “I don’t like the idea of creating an entire album of the same song.” On “Belleville” Pekoe Cat’s multiple musical influences are certainly evident. Ranging from Tame Impala, to Neon Indian, to Passion Pit, and even a little bit of The Strokes, Woolven’s refusal to settle on a sound is beginning to form his signature sound.

Where are you currently based?

I’m living in my hometown, in Orillia, Ontario.

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing piano when I was 6, and singing in school talent shows a couple of years after that. I got a guitar for Christmas in the eighth grade and taught myself how to play so I could write songs with it. It wasn’t until high school that I started playing my own songs in front of people, which quickly became my favourite thing to do at every coffee house/ open mic I could get myself on the sign-up sheet for!

What have you been up to recently?

I have been pretty consumed with getting my new EP ready to release– making videos, doing photoshoots and all of the administrative stuff that comes along with being an independent artist. It’s pretty all-consuming, but it’s been really exciting for me! I’m also starting to write again and enjoying some time in the sun hanging by the lake!

What influenced the sound and songwriting on your new EP Enough?

I started writing this EP right around the time that I was dropped from my previous label deal.  I felt like I hadn’t gotten personal enough in my prior releases and really wanted to get uncomfortably honest in my writing. All of the songs are relationship-focused and autobiographical– covering breakups to being in love again. I went into recording just focused on making something I was excited about, and wanted to try new things and have fun in the process. The sound was born out of a mix of contemporary pop influences with pop punk influences that I grew up with.

How did you go about writing the music?

I write about my own experience and that’s always been important to me. I fell in love with music because I found solace in the words of other artists who wrote really personal lyrics. Growing up, I was always posting song lyrics to my MSN status and Facebook wall about how I was feeling *SO CRINGE*.

Now, if I’m writing for myself, I like to use songwriting as a way to sort through my head and whatever I’m going through… (call it cheap therapy).  Most of my songs start with a few lyrics, or a small poem in my notes app that I’ll eventually revisit and turn into a song when I am a little more removed and have a clearer headspace to sort through the feelings/ emotions.

Where and when did you record/produce/master, and who with?

Some of the songs were written as early as 2018, but I started recording these songs in 2019.  The EP is 100% female produced– Hill Kourkoutis produced ‘Unsolicited Contact’, ‘I Don’t Trust Anyone Anymore’, and ‘Darkside’ in Toronto, and Robyn Dell’Unto produced ‘We Might Break Up’, ‘I Don’t Hang out with My Exes’ and ‘Enough’ in Nashville. They’re both so amazing at what they do and it was a dream working with them. Jason Dufour from Toronto mixed the EP, and Emily Lazar did the mastering.

How did you approach the recording process?

I had worked with only male producers previously, so I wanted to work with female producers on this project (especially because it came from such a personal, female perspective). It was such a different experience being in the studio with all female energy. Hill and Robyn are so talented, and I felt really comfortable to just be myself and try new things. I felt free to be creative, experiment and be vulnerable, which was crucial for this EP and made it so much fun to work on.

What does this EP mean to you?

“Enough” is a collection of songs that focuses on relationships, and explores both dealing with heartbreak and finding love. I understand that, thematically, the two don’t go together, but I’ve found in my experience that love and heartbreak aren’t sequential. It’s entirely possible to experience feelings of heartbreak and longing while being completely in love with someone new.

In the case of the title track, it’s about finding love and wholeness—acknowledging that real love, above all else, is enough.  In the songs about heartbreak, the title is more about closing the door behind me and saying things that I didn’t have enough courage to say before. It’s about saying enough is enough to those feelings.

This project also acknowledges my journey as an artist and all of the self-doubt that has come along with my experiences. Throughout the making of this EP, I was able to remind myself that I could in fact do things my way, and that the work I created— despite my fears— has always been good enough.  That I’m enough.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

My favourite band right now is Winnetka Bowling League– I love all of their songs and think Matthew Koma is a lyrical *genius*, but ‘On the 5’, ‘are you okay?’, and ‘Slow Dances’ are probably my favourites… It’s the type of songwriting that makes me want to be a better, more honest writer.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love spending time with my friends and my extended family– that’s where I’m happiest (and also why this last year has been particularly difficult for me to manage). When I have free time I love sewing, crafting, and getting active– playing tennis, rollerblading, and running.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?
A) Lots of fun things to come alongside the EP release — a couple more videos and even some merch.  Beyond that, I’m excited to take a bit of a breath and recharge after the release. I’m looking forward to writing more again, doing some travelling, and hopefully making up for some lost time with my friends and family!

Favourite food and place to hangout

I have the biggest sweet tooth… anything baked. There’s a place called Mariposa Market here in Orillia and if it was acceptable to eat donuts for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I would eat their Texas donuts until I literally turned into one.

I’m not the biggest fan of going out– although after this year I’m sure my friends and I will be doing lots of that… But to be honest, my favourite place to be is at a friend’s house– hanging out and having a few drinks (and a lot of laughs) with my favourite people around a table, on a basement couch, or on the living room floor.  Can’t wait to get back to that!

+ share new single ‘Pulling On A String’

Following the success of their first two singles ‘Take My Picture’ and ‘Two Strong Legs’ Wyndow (Laura J Martin and Lavinia Blackwall) return with their eponymous debut album.  The project was ignited by a love of Robert Wyatt and an off-hand idea of collaborating on a version of his song ‘Free Will and Testament’. In a time of weird interludes, the self-examination of the song’s lyrics opened the pathway to themes examined throughout the record, that of being and wanting and the battle between knowledge and knowing. Who am I and do I see myself the way others see me?

What follows is an exploration of the uncertain and the impermanent.  According to Martin, they are “tunes for whacked out worriers lifting weights in the worry gym,” where “feeling uneasy never felt so easy.” Reflections flit between two pendulums as each wrote and recorded remotely and exchanged these dog-eared musical postcards to see each others’ responses.  Eschewing the “band in a room” aesthetic out of geographical necessity they focussed on maximising the sonic palette of each song, doing exactly what each piece demanded without thinking about who had to play each instrument.

The songs on Wyndow exist in the space between waking and sleeping, hazy tales that unfurl and engulf the listener in a slightly uncanny sense of familiarity. New single ‘Pulling On A String’ is based on the feeling of walking familiar routes and wishing they took you elsewhere, the duality of holding on to the familiar yet pulling yourself nearer to the beyond and the unknown.

Taking inspiration from the atmospheres and repetition of ecstatic minimalism and the joyful experimentation of Penguin Cafe Orchestra, songs were built from small fragments and loops, recorded spontaneously and sent to each other across the wires.  Recorded and produced in Liverpool with Iwan Morgan (Euros Childs, Gruff Rhys, Cate le Bon)  and in Clydebank with multi-instrumentalist Marco Rea (Euros Childs, Alex Rex) new textures with copious analogue synthesis and treated acoustic instruments were mined, even fretless bass was not off-limits. Recalling the tender pulse of Cluster on ‘Take My Picture’ and the late night hues of La Dusseldorf on album closer ‘Tidal Range’, Wyndow strikes a new path for both artists. On ‘Pulling on A String’ the close foregrounding of both voices call to mind The Roches, another key touchstone for the sound of the record.

The result is a melting pot of influences with both artists at the top of their game, reflecting on the smallest human experiences set against a galactic sonic canvas. Wyndow is due to be released on October 1st on vinyl, CD and digital via Summer Critics.

PATRICK WATSON Unveils new video for ‘Can’t Stop Staring At The Sun’ From three-part single A Mermaid In Lisbon

Today Patrick Watson unveils a new video for the song ‘Can’t Stop Staring at the Sun,’ from his three-part single ‘A Mermaid in Lisbon‘, released via Secret City Records / Remote Control Records. Directed and choreographed by Jacob Jonas, the video stars dancers Anthony Bryant, Gianinni Semedo Moreira, and Nicolas Walton.

“During the lockdown I was really inspired and watching a lot of modern dance videos. ‘Can’t Stop Staring at the Sun’ felt like it was a dance piece from the beginning. I was already collaborating with Jacob Jonas on another project, so I asked him if he could make me a dance video. I gave him the song and he came back with this beautiful piece,” explains Watson.

Jacob Jonas shares the inspiration behind the video: “Our truest vulnerabilities are amplified when seen. The exposure to the light allows a witness to observe. The sun returns each day. Nature’s way to remind us to start again. We are scheduled by brightness. When dark, we are illuminated by the artificial. This narrative is about man’s dependence of sunlight and without it, he is caught.” He adds “There’s a strange satisfaction of staring at the sun. The attraction to something you’re not supposed to be attracted to. It’s intense, surreal and lucid. This video explores what’s real versus what’s imagined through fear.”

‘A Mermaid in Lisbon,’ which came out in May, is the latest release by Patrick Watson, featuring Teresa Salgueiro and the Attacca Quartet.

“The inspiration for these three pieces came the last time I was walking the streets of Lisbon. It’s my favourite place to wander it just generally feels like the streets are singing this wonderful melancholic sound for your walk, that pulls you into small winding roads, that make you feel like you’ll get lost and never return. Hence the mermaid title. It’s an incredible place and it was the one place in the world I missed most during the quarantine.”

Jacob Jonas is a director, choreographer, photographer and Creative Director of Jacob Jonas The Company. Jacob’s work has reached global audiences, in an effort to make the medium of dance more visible and valued. Jacob engages in non-traditional collaborations and has worked with artists including Kanye West, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Emmanuel Lubezki, Vanessa Beecroft and Patrick Watson. Jonas’s choreography has been presented at the Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, and Lincoln Center. He has collaborated with brands including Nike, James Perse, Sony, and The Getty Museum. His films have been selected as Vimeo Staff Pick Best of the Month, premiered on NOWNESS, written about in the New York Times and will be presented at the 2021 La Biennale in Venice, Italy. Jacob founded his company in 2014 with partner, Jill Wilson, and lighting designer, Will Adashek. @jacobjonasthecompany

Patrick Watson composes, performs and records his albums with his full band, which includes Joe Grass (guitar), Evan Tighe (drums), Mishka Stein (bass). The recipients of Canada’s Polaris Music Prize, in addition to multiple JUNO and Polaris nominations, Watson and his band have toured on all continents, on occasion playing with full orchestras to bring their rich music to life. Venues for their tour dates last February and March of 2020 were the largest yet, including the Barbican (London), L’Olympia (Paris), Coliseu (Lisbon), El Plaza Condesa (Mexico City), and more. Raised and still living in Montreal, Watson has composed several scores for both film and television, including a trailer for The Walking Dead and Wim Wenders’ 3D film Everything Will Be Fine.

Los Angeles-based, all-female punk band The Linda Lindas have released their highly anticipated new single “Oh!” “’Oh!’ is one of the first songs we collaborated on during the pandemic, masked and distanced on the front porch,” recalls the band. “It started with the main riff and progression Bela brought to the band. Eloise wrote the verses and Lucia and Mila wrote the choruses. The song deals with trying to help out someone and having it blow up in your face.”

Along with the track, the band share their colourful and fun video directed by Ryan Baxley (Best Coast, The Regrettes, Charlie Hanson) featuring American skateboarder and photographer Ray Barbee. When coming up with the video concept the band worked backward from the single artwork featuring Polaroid photos of themselves and imagined a world where these photos come to life.

Check out the music video for “Oh!” here.

The track is featured in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix series “The Chair” starring Golden Globe winning actress, Sandra Oh. The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim (Oh) as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University. Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university.

ABOUT THE LINDA LINDAS

Formed in 2018, The Linda Lindas first played together when former Dum Dum Girls frontwoman Kristin Kontrol invited them to take the stage to play covers for Girlschool LA (a music and ideas festival focused on connecting and empowering women-identified artists, leaders, and voices). After forming their own band and playing DIY gigs around Los Angeles, they were asked to open for punk icon Alice Bag and for seminal riot grrrl band Bikini Kill at one of their 2019 reunion shows at the Hollywood Palladium. In time, the band began writing their own material, including a song featured in the 2020 Netflix documentary The Claudia Kishi Club.

The Linda Lindas released their self-titled, self-released debut EP in 2020 showcasing their high-energy and heartfelt brand of punk, naming Jawbreaker, The Go-Go’s, and The Alley Cats among their inspirations. Months later, they appeared in a key scene of Amy Poehler’s Moxie!

In May 2021, The Linda Lindas’ set at the Cypress Park branch of the L.A. Public Library was streamed as an AAPI Heritage Month event (the band members are Asian American, Latinx, or both). The bands blistering performance of “Racist, Sexist Boy,” amassed over four million views on Instagram, and earned major praise from the likes of Hayley Williams, Questlove, Flea, and members of Rage Against the Machine and Sonic Youth.

The Linda Lindas are Eloise (vocals, bass), Mila (vocals, drums), Bela (vocals, guitar), and Lucia (vocals, guitar).

“Luke Hemmings reckons with the passage of time”

“Both parts emotional and thrilling”
Bridget Hustwaite (triple j)

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Hemmings today shares his latest single, ‘Motion‘, which was premiered on triple j’s Good Nights overnight and is lifted from his forthcoming debut album When Facing The Things We Turn Away From, out via Sony / Arista this August 13. LISTEN HERE.

‘Motion‘ is a light funk-come-psych rock adjacent affair, in contrast to the rousing introduction of his solo debut, ‘Starting Line‘. Kicking off with a rolling guitar riff, ‘Motion‘ is layered with oscillating synths, phasers and towering, wall of sound vocals reminiscent of The Flaming Lips and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Of the track, Luke shares, “This song is about having a sense of distrust with the way you perceive your own thoughts and the way the world moves around you. It was written about a time when I felt like the voices in my head weren’t my own and my sense of reality felt blurred.”

With ‘Starting Line‘, Luke Hemmings introduced the world to a new side to himself and his artistry, born out of need in the midst of the pandemic. For the first time, the Sydney-born and Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate channels his dedication, passion, and energy internally, on his forthcoming record, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From.

Motivated by pushing his creative limits, Hemmings’ solo debut is a natural and necessary sidestep to help Luke make sense of a decade spent in constant motion. Following his inner-muse and authentic creative self, the result is a definitive, deeply personal record about Luke: the artist, songwriter, musician, and human.

Met with a sea of support globally, ‘Starting Line‘ has received widespread acclaim and support, including Billboard, NME, The Daily Telegraph, NYLON, Pedestrian TV, triple j, RAGE, and many more, boasting over 6 million streams globally and 1 million views on the official music video. The greatest challenges arise from within, and Luke Hemmings’ solo debut is the outcome of rising to that occasion.

HOMESHAKE Shares new single & video ‘Passenger Seat’ New album Under The Weather out September 10

On the heels of announcing his new album, Toronto-based musician Homeshake, born Peter Sagar, returns to share a new offering from Under The Weather – out September 10 via SHHOAMKEE / Sinderlyn / Remote Control Records.

Designed and directed by Pete Sharp, ‘Passenger Seat‘ is an animated, intergalactic highway short that perfectly captures the track’s intimate and meticulously crafted soundscape. “The details in each scene are amazing,” Sagar says. “They compliment the minimalist production of the song so well.” Of the collaboration, Pete Sharp says, “I love the music of Homeshake! When I heard the title ‘Passenger Seat’ I thought ‘passenger seat—cars—traffic jam—in space?’ I think the slow moving interstellar pile up really reflects the pace and mood of the track. I hope the general public does too!” The song is the second track from the album following ‘Vacuum,’ which arrived alongside an animated video directed by Jordan Speer and produced by Brain Dead Studios.

Written in 2019, Under The Weather, is Sagar‘s fifth studio album under the Homeshake moniker. The album is an atmospheric, 12-track reflection on the artist’s life and depression, and documents a long, unrelenting period of sadness for the artist. The album will arrive alongside a special line of Under The Weather products in collaboration with aforementioned LA based streetwear brand Brain Dead. Available for pre-order today, products include vinyl for the record, which also consists of a limited edition Sinderlyn color way.

Unlike most of us, Peter Sagar — also known as Homeshake — was staying at home a lot, long before the pandemic. Sagar wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under the Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness. “I was in a deep, deep depression,” he recalls of that time period now. “Tours were breaking me. It was awful.” Sagar and his partner were living in Montreal and while everyone was out being social, he was inside listening to ambient music, binging Star Trek, and writing songs. (Sound familiar?) “It was a bit of a dark pit,” he says. “That’s kind of what the whole album is about.”

Under the Weather follows Sagar’s life and the depression that consumed him in 2019 — after a brief album intro, it jumps right into ‘Feel Better,’ a reflection on attempting to buck up when the weather outside is grim. The album is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line. In ‘Inaminit‘, Sagar cancels plans when he’s feeling low; the closing track, ‘Tenterhooks‘ sees Sagar’s deliverance into the depths of despair: “Feel myself drying up / feel myself turn into dust,” he sings over a funhouse mirror synth. “Oftentimes when you’re in a dark place, you’re supposed to journal and that helps release the pressure,” Sagar says. “For me, it always found its way into the music.”

Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper’s Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of “dry, pristine digital sound” that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the Homeshake project in the first place.

“I didn’t realise how much I missed having a second set of ears. It’s pretty invaluable,” Sagar says. He would send all the of tracks back and forth with Nathan over the course of 2019, which made the process a longer one than he was used to. “There are a lot of things that I probably wouldn’t have done that Lucas did do. I would tend to do a lot of softening of things, a lot of making everything super bassy and gentle. Lucas was aware that sometimes you needed some punch and grit.” To Sagar, those additions made the record what it is — a melodic, honest look at personal emotional struggle.

As Sagar readies it for release this September, the record he wrote about feeling isolated, alone, and despondent has begun to seem eerily prescient. “People will probably think that I made Under the Weather during or about Covid,” Sagar reflects now. “I was just already living my life that way.” For Sagar, the feelings he experienced over the course of that year are far from over — “I’ve been writing about feeling isolated my whole life,” he says — but with age, he has come to understand them better. “I had a fairly clear idea what the album was going to be like based on where I was emotionally at the time,” he says about Under the Weather. “I just try to make music that is honest about how I’m feeling.”

Speaking of the track, Seinfeld (real name Armand Jakobsson) commented: “To me this track feels like it could’ve been included in my first album. Partly because I still am drawn to aspects of that sound, and partly because I still feel inspired by the optimism that came out of difficult times. ‘These Things Will Come To Be’ refers to that optimism, and I hope it’s something that you’ll all enjoy.”

Also announced today, DJ Seinfeld will be launching a new monthly live-series on Spotify’s Greenroom platform. Titled ‘GALAZY ROOM’ the inaugural show will take place at 12AM AEST on July 30 and will feature informal discussions around one of Armand’s burning interests: Space. DJ Seinfeld, musicians and friends – including Teira and Baltra – will join Armand to discuss everything from The Universe to Space Exploration to Unexplained Aerial Phenomena, and maybe find time to share some music too.

Mirrors is out September 3, 2021 on Ninja Tune, with new single ‘These Things Will Come To Be’ out now.

Recorded between Berlin and Malmo, Mirrors is the follow-up to Seinfeld’s critically acclaimed 2017 debut album Time Spent Away From U and his first for Ninja Tune. Named after a quote by Armand’s favourite writer, Argentine novelist Julio Cortázar, the album finds the producer in a more settled and grounded mood after an unfortunate family incident forced the producer to spend more time at home in his native Sweden over the past few years. Recently announced alongside italo-tinged summer anthem lead single ‘U Already Know’, it received impressive support from the likes of RA, The Fader, DJ Mag, Clash, XLR8R and Mixmag, who unveiled Seinfeld as their July cover star just last week. Radio support has also come from the likes of Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Jack Saunders and the Blessed Madonna.

Rising to prominence in 2016 as part of the lo-fi house scene alongside producers including Ross From Friends and Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld (whose name is a result of extended sessions watching the classic American sitcom after a breakup and move to Barcelona) released his debut album in 2017 which received plaudits from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to name a couple. It also gained attention from contemporaries like Flume, Flying Lotus, Bonobo and Martin Garrix and saw Seinfeld become a globally in-demand DJ playing sets everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella, Warehouse Project, Sónar By Night and MoMaPS1, sharing stages with everyone from Jeff Mills to Stormzy, Underworld and Bicep as well as accompanying Disclosure on several dates of their US tour. In 2018 he became part of a select group of DJs that includes Moodymann, DJ Koze and Nina Kraviz when he was chosen to curate an edition of the iconic DJ Kicks mix series. To top it off, Aphex Twin began playing his track ‘Sakura’ in his live shows.

JOY ORBISON Announces still slipping vol. 1 mixtape His first-ever long from project Out August 13 via XL Recordings

On 13th August 2021, Joy Orbison – the artist name of Peter O’Grady – will release his first-ever long form project. The fourteen-track mixtape titled still slipping vol. 1 is the latest creative milestone from an artist who has been shaping and redefining the electronic music landscape since his teens. Over a decade into a career that has seen him constantly defying categorisation, Joy Orbison is more in-demand and relevant than ever.

Highly anticipated would be an understatement – so influential are his releases to date, it’s difficult to believe he’s never released a full-length project. The name of the mixtape may already be familiar – an evolution from 2019’s acclaimed Slipping EP and also the name of a Joy Orbison curated radio station (“Still Slipping: Los Santos“) within Grand Theft Auto’s immersive world – but in terms of scope and ambition, still slipping vol.1 is without doubt O’Grady’s boldest and most expansive project yet.

First coming to prominence in 2009 with his debut single ‘Hyph Mngo’ – a track that became a bonafide phenomenon and changed the dance music underground forever – the London musician, DJ and producer is undoubtedly one of the most renowned, respected and influential electronic artists of his generation. Whether through his own game-changing releases such as ‘Ellipsis’, ‘GR Etiquette’, ‘Big Room Tech House DJ Tool-TIP!’ or the Slipping EP, collaborations with the likes of Mansur Brown, Overmono and cutting edge Japanese clothing label Cav Empt, a run of genre-defining releases on his Hinge Finger label, a BBC Radio 1 residency and live appearances that span the most credible underground nights to festival headline slots around the world, the name Joy Orbison has been a constant byword for understated, uncompromising quality.

still slipping vol.1 is the next evolution in his journey. Fans of Joy Orbison’s DJ sets and radio shows will already be aware of his diverse tastes and inspirations, represented here through a roll call of delicately curated, mainly UK, collaborators that include Herron, James Massiah, Bathe, Léa Sen, Goya Gumbani and Tyson. Just as important are the voices Joy Orbison’s family – mum, dad, sister Sarah, uncle Frankie, uncle Keith (recently departed), auntie Helen and cousins Lola, Mia and Leighann, who was the first person to introduce O’Grady to drum and bass and garage as a kid and stars on the mixtape’s cover art. They appear throughout the record via a series of voice notes, his only contact with his family during this year of worldwide lockdown and an intimate, vicarious glimpse into the personal world of an artist who has generally side-stepped the public gaze.

The result is Joy Orbison’s best music to date and a powerful distillation of his musical career so far. Recorded in his Walworth Window studio in south east London, this is serious, future-facing sound system music cut through with a sense of warmth and playfulness much needed for these times.  See below for some words from Joy Orbison on the mixtape.

still slipping vol.1 will be available on LP, CD, cassette and on all digital services. Meanwhile, to celebrate with the release of still slipping vol.1, Joy Orbison has also announced an exclusive collaboration with legendary Tokyo-based clothing label Cav Empt. The long-time friends and collaborators (Joy Orbison has previously performed at Cav Empt parties in London and Tokyo and contributed to their renowned tape series) have come together to produce a range of “still slipping” merchandise including t-shirts and socks. This is Cav Empt’s first-ever collaboration with an artist and is sure to be highly sought after.

All still slipping vol.1 formats and merchandise are available to pre-order today HERE.

Talking about the mixtape, Joy Orbison says:

“i’ve been working on the idea of a mixtape for a while now. i’d never really wanted to make an album, but the way I’ve been making and listening to music has changed a lot over the last few years and it doesn’t always make sense on a single or EP. i also had this realisation that I wish my records were better suited to soundtracking people’s bus journeys but so far I’ve only really given you enough music to get half way up walworth road.

i’ve made a point of making this record feel really human, light hearted and humorous in places too so that the weirder bits of the record don’t seem too wanky or self-indulgent. there’s so much electronic music that I love but I never really connected to the space age, distant land of whoever your graphic designer is presentation of it all – so hopefully this feels a bit more personal. there’s a load of voice notes from family members in there too, pretty much my only contact with them over lockdown. my dad recently showed me this extensive list he’d made of the amount of times we’d moved house growing up (my head count is 16 btw). he’s an engineer so a lot of my childhood was spent following the work. unsurprisingly that’s led to me thinking about family & belonging as i’ve got older and how that relates to my music.

in my head this is a soul record but I’m not sure that’s how people will hear it. the cover star is my wonderful cousin Leighann who introduced me to jungle, d’n’b & uk garage at a young age. without her I wouldn’t be doing what I do today. i love this picture by Rosie Marks, it reminds me of a sample i wanted to nick from a Potter Payper interview that pretty much sums up my career – ‘you never know what a kind word could do for someone’. with that in mind I wanna say a big thank you to all the collaborators on this record, my noble friends (you know who you are), the good people at XL recordings and most of all my partner in crime William Aspden (he’s got kind words in abundance).

hope you enjoy it, thanks for your patience and support – it means everything. x p”

Oscar Jerome & Ben Hauke – ‘No Need’
Out Now

Genre-bending trailblazer Oscar Jerome, teams up with South East London DJ and sonic experimenter, Ben Hauke for ‘No Need’, out today via DMY. The pair come together again following a collaboration in 2019, for Oscar’s release ‘Gravitate’ and took the opportunity during 2020’s lockdowns to reignite their creative output as a duo. The release blends Jerome’s jazz, soul and guitar elements with Hauke’s influences from house, broken beat and 90’s hip-hop, across the luminous 2-track EP.

Oscar Jerome comes off the back of his 2020 breakthrough debut album ‘Breathe Deep’ which featured Lianne La Havas and picked up glowing endorsements from across the music industry. Jerome was labelled as The Guardian’s ‘One To Watch’ as well receiving frequent support and playlisting across the likes of 6 Music, Radio1 and 1Xtra, for his unique ability to supply absorbing grooves alongside arresting & poignant lyrics.

An in-demand singer-songwriter and former member of Afrobeat collective, Kokoroko, he’s established himself as a key player in not only South London’s burgeoning contemporary Jazz scene, but the global stage too. Performing at festivals such as PukkelPop, GALA Festival and Turning Tides, the London native also lines up a 20-date UK & EU tour this autumn.

Talented South East-London based producer, DJ and composer Ben Hauke has made a name for himself with releases on labels such as Far Out Recordings, Cooperation Records and YAM Records, whilst finding a consistent home on his own Woop Records. Recent release ‘ONE YEAR DANCE’, was added to 6 Music’s playlist and received heavy support across stations such as Rinse FM, NTS and Balamii. Touting a distinctive sound that can be applied to a multitude of genres, Hauke isn’t afraid to express himself and effortlessly moves across spaces, such as jazz, breaks, garage and acid.

With jazz inflicted percussion and Jerome’s ethereal voice, title track ‘No Need’ kicks off the EP, bringing in wider house elements through Hauke’s intricate production. ‘Cosmic Egg’ ventures into more experimental territories, with Jerome painting a picture above the pulsating hip-hop beat.

Dripping in each other’s signature sounds, Jerome and Hauke perfectly compliment one another’s styles on the release. From floating vocals and jazz guitar riffs, to solid production and subtle instrumentation they supply an example of how to collaborate across a number of styles. Moving further to cement their positions in their respective fields, displaying their ability to create rich sounds and tapestries with incredible breadth.

Oscar Jerome & Ben Hauke’s ‘No Need’ EP is available now via DMY.

The sound of Paul McCartney chewing celery! Two-decades on, Super Furry Animals reveal isolated audio of the former Beatle’s contribution to their celebrated album… RINGS AROUND THE WORLD

by the partae July 21, 2021
written by the partae

– McCartney provided ‘carrot and celery’ percussion to the band’s 2001 single, Receptacle For The Respectable after meeting the band at the NME Awards
– For the first time in two decades, and as part of the Furries’ reissue of their fifth album Rings Around The World, the sound of the former Beatle chewing vegetables to the beat is revealed in the original, isolated audio.

20TH ANNIVERSARY ALBUM RE-ISSUE
Original album remastered + rare bonus tracks
2 x LP, Single CD, 3 x CD & Digital 1 – Fri 3 September 2021
Digital 2 – Fri 24 September 2021

The isolated audio of Paul McCartney chewing carrots and celery has been released by Super Furry Animals to announce the 20-year anniversary reissue of their ‘maximalist’, fifth studio album, Rings Around The World, newly presented on 180g gatefold, double vinyl, triple CD and double digital album in September. McCartney’s playful addition is released on its own for the very first time as one of 75 curiosities from the vaults, including unreleased outtakes, remixes, hidden sounds and demos appearing across the multi-format release.

A story that starts with a chance encounter at the NME Awards in 2000 and ends with McCartney’s enthusiastic chewing being delivered by post and then woven into the production of the Furries’ single, Receptacle For The Respectable, the ex-Beatle’s contribution is just one of the wild bends in the road of the expansive, Millennium-era, classic alt-pop album’s remarkable story.

Approached by artificially emboldened Furries keys player, Cian Ciarán at the ceremony at the Mermaid Theatre, London, initially to convince McCartney to let the band loose to remix The Beatles’ songs (a successful pitch as the Furries later received boxes of Beatles master tapes to contribute heavily to the Liverpool Sound Collage), McCartney agreed to appear on the band’s upcoming album. Within weeks, McCartney had sent a tape of just what the band had requested. Having previously ‘played’ the celery on Beach Boys’ 1967 track Vegetables, McCartney took the chance to revive his penchant for percussion with roots.

Ciarán says of the surreal addition to the Mercury Prize-nominated album: “He was going to come to the studio and then decided not to for some reason. So, we sent him stereo backing tracks so he could keep time, then he sent the tape back with a message that started with a really dodgy Welsh accent. Then he goes ‘I hope you like it’ – the next thing you know you just hear this chewing sound!”

In addition to McCartney’s appearance as carrot and celery cruncher-in-chief on Receptacle For The Respectable, Super Furry Animals added one more hero to the list of album credits as Velvet Underground’s John Cale took up the piano on Presidential Suite.

So vast is the BMG reissue of Rings Around The World that the digital version will be split over two, separate release dates.  All physical versions and the first digital instalment will be released on Fri 3 September 2021, with a second digital collection being made available three weeks later on Fri 24 September 2021.

Notably the first ever studio album to be produced in 5.1 Surround Sound, as a visual album and released on DVD allowing Playstation gamers to effortlessly switch to listening to the album, Super Furry Animals tested both the tolerances of modern technology and the purse strings of their record label at the time, Sony/Epic. Hiring four-time Grammy Award-winning, Run DMC and Public Enemy Producer, Chris Shaw and heading for a string of high-spec, residential studios, the band set out to reach for their furthest and wildest musical ambitions.

The Rings Around The World adventure is notable for being central to the Furries’ American odyssey. They, Shaw and engineer Eric Tew completed the estimated, final third of the record at Bearsville Studios on the lip of Woodstock, New York State, sessions that began after the band were left at the roadside by an out-of-patience, conservative husband and wife driving team, following a nine-date club tour from Hoboken to Boston. The following weeks featured baby bears, fireflies and paranoid, Blair Witch Project-reminiscent forest walks.

The widespread, positive response to the record after release on Mon 23 July 2001, which also included the sunlit, countrified splendour of Run! Christian, Run! and third single, It’s Not The End Of The World, not only gained the band more ground and bigger shows in the US, but a 2001 Mercury Prize-nomination, putting the band onstage for the awards party on a notable Tue 11 September 2001. The band returned to the States in 2002 for two, coast-to-coast US Tours following the critical and commercial success of the album across the Atlantic.

With updated packaging featuring original artwork and sleeve notes by music journalist, Keith Cameron, the announced track listing for the 2021 remastered release of Super Furry Animals’ Rings Around The World is as follows:

COLD HART
ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM
EVERY DAY IS A DAY
OUT AUGUST 27

SHARES NEW TRACK
“WILD WILD WEST”

Alt-rapper Cold Hart has just announced his forthcoming sophomore album Every Day Is A Day out August 27 via Epitaph Records. Every Day is A Day is the follow-up to his 2019 his full-length debut studio album Good Morning Cruel World.

Today, Cold Hart shares “Wild Wild West,” which finds him revisiting his hometown of Long Beach, recalling days spent speeding down the freeway with his friends grabbing burgers, and taking in the sights of the shoreline and palm trees.

Check it out HERE.

As a co-founder of the seminal emo rap collective GothBoiClique (Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Lil Peep, Horse Head, Døves, JPDreamthug, Lil Tracy, Mackned, YAWNS, and fish narc), Cold Hart has consistently been on the cutting edge of alternative hip-hop and rock since 2013 as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer. By pairing components of rap with seemingly unrelated genres like emo, gothic rock, and even country, Cold Hart has become an innovator of genre-defying music.

Working with longtime collaborator YAWNS, who co-produced most of the record, Cold Hart takes his signature sound to new heights bringing his adept songwriting skills into sharper focus and expanding his palette of sonic touchstones. He wrote the album over the course of the pandemic after moving to Long Island with his wife and newborn daughter, and recorded it during the particularly dreary winter. Cold Hart weaves the consequences of these shifts, whether it be coming to terms with fatherhood, learning how to drive on icy suburban roads covered in snow, or staying present through painful experiences, into the thematic patchwork of the album.

Pictured: Left - Katz, Right - Fractures Download Hi-Res Image Today, Melbourne-based songwriter and producer Katz shares 'Forward' - the latest single from his forthcoming second EP, due August 13 via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. The oscillating synths and bright, futuristic sounds of ‘Forward’ feature the vocals of well-loved Melbourne artist Fractures, whose pristine delivery provides a point of contrast to the syncopated chord stabs, chopped vocals samples, and break-style beat of Katz’s instrumental. As ‘Forward’ continues to build around its spiralling synths, the synchronicity between Katz’s production and Fractures’s vocals grows into a genuinely lovely moment of cinematic, emotionally-driven indie pop. Fractures says: “The track had a lightness that guided the melody lines but we couldn’t resist putting a dark spin on the lyrics.” “‘Forward’ is full of constructive criticism - it’s about someone shirking their own ambitions and making excuses for unrealised potential”, adds Katz. “‘Forward’ is the second track Mark (Fractures) and I have written together. In contrast to the slow jam/neo-soul-tinged ‘Cipher’ (from the Waterfall EP), with ‘Forward’ we set out to make something a bit more airy and pop-focussed, but still a little dark, lyrically speaking. As a harmony-loving piano player, it was a lot of fun building thick vocal stacks and floating them over what is a relatively spare instrumental. We definitely laboured over those harmonies, making sure the right layer would cut through at the right time in order to meet the intention of a particular lyric.” The Only You EP is a bold step forward for Katz, marrying measured production with clever pop hooks, underpinned by his signature composition style. A confluence of emotional, vignette-driven storytelling, and Katz’s keen ear for original arrangements and instrumentation, the project is tastefully enhanced Katz's background in jazz. Only You further cements Katz’s unique place as a true polymath, unencumbered by the limitations of genre and continuing to explore new terrains within the electronic pop scene both at home and abroad. Today, Melbourne-based songwriter and producer Katz shares ‘Forward‘ – the latest single from his forthcoming second EP, due August 13 via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

Fractures says: “The track had a lightness that guided the melody lines but we couldn’t resist putting a dark spin on the lyrics.”

“‘Forward’ is full of constructive criticism – it’s about someone shirking their own ambitions and making excuses for unrealised potential”, adds Katz. “‘Forward’ is the second track Mark (Fractures) and I have written together. Following the release of their acclaimed second album Drunk Tank Pink (“Drunk Tank Pink confirms shame’s status as one of the most exciting bands at the forefront of British music” – NME) earlier this year via Dead Oceans, shame today announce the Born In Luton Remixes EP.

Shared alongside the announcement is the ‘Maximum Security (Austin Brown / Parquet Courts) Remix’ of ‘Born in Luton’. Across the EP, out July 23, ‘Born in Luton’ has also been given the remix treatment from Pelada, dj dairy (black midi), PVA and Glows.

On working on his first-ever remix for shame, Austin Brown of Parquet Courts said:

“They’re gonna have to reopen the Hacienda for this one. Inspired by Ron Hardy’s Chicago Music Box and Belgian New Beat, this is one for the promo bin to all your fav DJs for their online radio streams and 2am playlist slots on CDJs worldwide for covid-free club summer.”
