Los Angeles’s Christian Lee Hutson has announced his sophomore album Quitters today. Produced by Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, Hutson pulls from a wide range of influences for his second record: the tight rhymes of John Prine, Bob Mehr’s book about the Replacements Trouble Boys, and Scott McClanahan’s auto-fiction The Sarah Book. It’s a recording that feels like a sonic expansion from Hutson’s debut.

Hutson has also shared a video for the lead single “Rubberneckers” (co- written with Alex Lahey) which features backing vocals from Bridgers. Directed by Zoe Donahoe and Adam Sputh, watch as Hutson plays to the camera then runs from it in resentment at the link below.

“I made the “Rubberneckers” video with my friends Zoe and Adam, who I worked with on the “Lose This Number” video,” Hutson explained. “The last time I danced was at the 8th grade social and it was mainly just swaying to “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” but I wanted to showcase what a natural, gifted dancer I am.”

Across Quitters’ 13 tracks, Hutson crafts a portrait of the place he’s from. In these short story-like songs  he presents characters who carry this golden light and sinister geography inside them. It’s a place where everything in the end gets blown away and paved over with something new, where even the ocean and fires are always whispering, “One day we’ll take it all back.”

This is a Los Angeles in constant transition, where childhood is lost, where home is gone and can never be visited again. Yet Hutson’s world is also one of happy accidents, where doors are left open on purpose, hoping that someone new will walk through. In the end, what’s left are these songs created by some future spirit, written to comfort the person we are now.

Quitters is also a departure from the digital recording of his debut. Hutson stated, “When we made Beginners the aim was to make simple digital recordings of how I would play the songs in the room. With this record, Phoebe and Conor had an idea that it would be fun to make it to tape. Phoebe is my best friend and making Beginners with her was so comfortable and easy. So I wanted to work with her again.”

“I took a long time with Beginners,” Hutson added. “I had those songs for 10 years, but these songs came out a lot faster.” Because the songs from Quitters were written in a shorter time, “there was a little bit of insecurity with the lyrics. Having Conor served the purpose of someone who I really respect as a lyricist and could soothe my anxiety.”

BASIA BULAT Shares new single & video ‘Fables (The Garden Version)’ Taken from forthcoming album The Garden Out February 25 via Secret City

Montreal’s Basia Bulat today shares ‘Fables (The Garden Version),’ the breathtaking, deeply stirring second single arranged and orchestrated by Zou Zou Roubidoux and from her forthcoming album The Garden, out digitally February 25th and physically March 25th, via Secret City Records / Remote Control Records. The track arrives alongside a video directed by Bulat that juxtaposes Hi 8 Camera footage from her childhood with recently shot footage of herself and her daughter.

“This is one of my favourite songs I’ve ever written because, as a folk singer, I have spent my adult life devoted to singing stories,” explains Bulat. “Storytelling is how we understand who we are and where we come from –  fables carry lessons from one generation to the next. But what do we do when part of the fable passed down to us is forgotten or mistaken? When we realise as adults that we may have been carrying on legacies that we didn’t intend or understand? Sometimes the stories we learned in childhood about ourselves and our homes are remnants from a past that cannot answer the questions we have in the present. We can’t change or save anyone with the stories we’ve carried with us, but they remind us to be bold enough to meet one another in the moment we have now with truth and love.” A reimagination of songs across Bulat’s five studio albums with stunning classical string quartet arrangements by Owen Pallett, Paul Frith, and Robidoux, The Garden is available for pre-order HERE.

Of the video, Bulat adds: “I wrote ‘Fables’ as both an ode to childhood and to the more difficult truths of adulthood, so when I came across some lovely old footage my mother filmed during a snow day, I was inspired to sing back to that time and see what might happen if I filmed it. Millefiore Clarkes and I were lucky enough to catch the sunlight and calm the day after a huge blizzard came through on Prince Edward Island. It felt very emotional watching the footage back to back, across years and seasons, recreating what felt like a childhood fable I had forgotten about in a new era of my life.”

While she has been known to play live with small chamber ensembles and full orchestras – including the Ottawa National Arts Centre Orchestra and Symphony Nova Scotia – The Garden marks Bulat’s first recording to capture this spellbinding configuration, which further showcases her singular voice and timeless songwriting. Across the 16 songs, produced by herself and Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Beirut), she gives a new life to beloved originals alongside a handpicked group of string players (violinists John Corban and Tomo Newton, violist Jen Thiessen, harpist Sarah Page, along with Robidoux on cello), as well as bandmates Andrew Woods and Ben Whiteley on guitar and bass, respectively. ‘Fables (The Garden Version)‘ follows ‘The Garden (The Garden Version),’ which earned praise and support from NPR Music’s All Songs Considered, Consequence, Brooklyn Vegan, Under the Radar, and more.

The Garden fits within a storied history of artists revisiting their songs over time and for Bulat, the album was a chance to record anew select songs whose meanings have shifted from when she originally composed them. Distance teaches, and reveals: “I sing the songs differently now,” she says. “It’s the gift of time.” While creating The Garden, Bulat had just found out she was expecting her first child, which she revealed to her collaborators in the midst of recording, down a wire from the vocal booth. A song can change shape, turning new leaves and growing new blooms, in life’s unexpected seasons.

The Polaris Music Prize and Juno-nominated Bulat has earned acclaim throughout her career from The New Yorker, NPR Music, The New York Times, Pitchfork, WNYC, The Independent, MOJO, and Uncut, among many others. Bulat has toured extensively around the world, gracing such stages and festivals as Carnegie Hall, Newport Folk Festival, and Montreux Jazz Festival.

Featuring electronic producer and vocalist Purient, ‘Why Can’t You See?’ is a stunning electro-ballad duet, about the limits of how well you can truly know a partner. Reflecting on the novel ‘The Doors of Perception’ by English writer Aldous Huxley, MOSSY came to the conclusion that perhaps “you can never fully know someone or occupy their universe. ‘Why Can’t You See?’ is a story about being in a relationship where there’s a constant veil, or even a secret, between you and one person is saying, ‘You don’t actually know me’.”

‘Why Can’t You See?’ has been kicking around for about 10 years in various forms, MOSSY says. “The vocals must have changed 50 times. My friend Will Shepherd wrote the original bass line, which Dean Tuza (producer) and I later turned into a bass synth sequence for this recording. Dean also suggested that we start the song like Kokomo by The Beach Boys, which really worked. It took me a while to find a chorus that I loved. I was listening to a lot of Blood Orange at the time and remember standing out the front of the Dendy Cinemas in Newtown in a torrential thunderstorm when the idea for the backing vocals came. I knew what kind of voice I wanted to sing those parts, but I struggled to think of the right person. It was years after that that I saw Kate (Purient) perform live for the first time and knew that her voice would be absolutely perfect on the track. Kate ended up doing a lot of vocals on the album. I love her voice, it’s so smooth, crystalline and unaffected. For me, it makes the track.”

‘Why Can’t You See?’ follows recent single ‘Unfazed’, which was added to FBi and has seen adds to global hyperpop tastemaker playlists across Spotify, Apple, Amazon and SoundCloud, and came with a dazzling re-work by Melbourne artist Banoffee. N2KY’s first single ‘Shade’ was added to rotation at FBi Radio and saw adds to a plethora of global streaming playlists. This track also came with an energetic remix by 17-year-old Canadian Hyperpop artist kmoe that was added to global Spotify playlists creamy (696k followers), hyperpop, Friday Cratediggers, cellophane, and Apple Music’s Glitch, New In: Electronic, Future Sounds and Electronic Pop. Combined these tracks have seen support from the likes of Matt Wilkinson and Zane Lowe, and firmly established MOSSY in the alternative pop world.

UK-based noise-pop band Superlove have just revealed their ethereal new single ‘Maybe I Could Tell You’ and its picturesque accompanying music video.

The electro-pop-tinged track is influenced by mid-2000’s coming-of-age films featuring those early moments of falling in love. The band explain, “to take a step aside from our usual writing process was really fun and this song has definitely opened up another new window for what our band can sound like. Lyrically the song is all about those moments building up to telling someone how you feel about them, when you want to tell someone you love them or fancy them. It can be a pretty nerve-wracking thing. The conversational element to the song was something that was done to showcase the innocence and vulnerability of the songs topic.”

Honeyglaze announce debut album and share single ‘Shadows’

Honeyglaze are excited to announce their Dan Carey-produced, self-titled debut album, to be released on April 29 via Speedy Wunderground.

The South London based, haiku-loving trio formed just before the first lockdown, and a combination of compelling live performances (including Green Man and support slots with Wet Leg, Geese and The Lounge Society) plus two standalone singles (‘Burglar‘ and ‘Creative Jealousy‘) has seen their profile rise rapidly and garner support from a plethora of early fans including Steve Lamacq, Matt Wilkinson and Wet Leg – who have all declared themselves in love with their intoxicating brand of poetic lyrics and impressive musicianship.

Along with the album announce, the band also unveil new single ‘Shadows‘, a rollicking slice of jangle pop, its sunny sway hiding a darker tale of insomnia. The accompanying video was directed by Asha Lorenz, frontwoman of the band Sorry.

Vocalist and guitarist Anouska Sokolow says of the song, ”‘Shadows’ was written during a time when I had just moved house. I had no curtains in my bedroom and the streetlights would cast shadows into my room. I began to associate shadows with the inability to sleep and the feeling of waiting for the relief that the morning brings.”

Of the video, Honeyglaze say: “For the ‘Shadows’ video, we wanted to be a bit more playful and match the jauntiness of the song. We got together with directors Asha Lorenz and Flo Webb and a load of random props, and improvised shadow play scenes together. We just wanted to go out and have fun. We had no idea it would end in death. It was never our intention to kill Yuri. It just all happened so fast.”

Honeyglaze are a South London based trio comprised of vocalist and guitarist Anouska Sokolow, bassist Tim Curtis and Yuri Shibuichi on drums.

Born out of lead songwriter Sokolow’s un-desire to be a solo-act, the group met officially at their first ever rehearsal, just three days ahead of what was to become a near-residency at their favoured The Windmill in Brixton. Forming a mere five-months ahead of a subsequent five-months of mandatory solitude, Honeyglaze, at first appearance, are a group who play with chance, time, and synergetic fate, in a manner few others are able to do.

A thirty-minute YouTube live session recorded in the garage of their close pal Fran for ‘FarmFest 2020’ pricked the ears of seminal producer Dan Carey and his team of meticulous taste-makers Speedy Wunderground (Squid, Black Country, New Road, Tiña).

A significant step-up from their previous routine of writing, rehearsing and recording in Yuri’s bedroom, in the company of Carey and his team, Honeyglaze were introduced to an entirely new universe – one filled with a ‘Swarmatron’, long-sweaty afternoons in window-less analogue, and total, creative freedom.

Much like the eponymously debuted statements of contemporary folk singer Bedouine‘s Bedouine, Crosby, Stills and Nash, or, dare we suggest Madonna‘s Madonna, Honeyglaze the album presents to the world an audibly picturesque documentation of soul-searching, in all its figments of reality; a proclamation of cultivated intent which in turn creates a subliminal safe-space between relatability and self-projection, and creative-comradery paired with introspective artistry.

A self-described “opposite to a concept album” that sonically encapsulates the who, what, where and how of their individual circumstances coming together as one, Honeyglaze is storytelling at its most soulful, presenting human instinct in a manner that accepts all of the insecurities that come from their present adolescence, whilst acknowledging the formative maturity that’s earned when we allow ourselves to embrace the unknown, of our futures ahead.

“If someone is going to find you special – then you want to show what’s most special about yourself,” notes Curtis. “Then you can do what you want from there.”

Mixing the personal with romanticised ideals in ways that are simultaneously heart-wrenching and humorous to a dead-pan effect, there is no one trajectory for Honeyglaze, whose greatest ability is finding ways to present what’s written in-between the lines, in moments of beautifully well-versed clarity.

Tackling themes varying from jealousy to inadequacy, codependent companionships to the smell of coffee on clothes, as with all good reflections of self, Honeyglaze is a fly on the wall opportunity to get to know three familial strangers in your own way – whilst they too suss out themselves, and the ever-growing circle around them, in the span of 37 minutes.

In keeping with their broody pop / alt-indie sentiments, in tracks such as the aptly titled ‘Start’: a solar complex stirring call from the top of Sokolow’s spirit, to the bassy heart-pluck of Curtis, and back over to the rhythmically knobbly-knees of Shibuichi, or, the rollicking jangle of ‘Shadows’, Honeyglaze are able to command total control as the protagonists of their own melancholic manifesto.

Debut single ‘Burglar’ is an enamoring masterclass in baring all, without needing to scream to be heard or understood. Beckoning, becoming and utterly bewitching, ‘Burglar’ is the coming-of-age lovechild of Whitney‘s Forever Turned Around, and the stylistically-subdued existentialism of Julia Jacklin, or Oregon’s Haley Heynderickx.

As for what remains, be it performing to a rammed crowd at Brecon Beacons’ Green Man Festival back in August, or playing at the iconic 100 Club for Fred Perry’s All Our Tomorrow’s Festival, it’s safe to say that Honeyglaze are well and truly embodying the concept of ‘ones to watch’.

To conclude: “Hi we are Honeyglaze, and there’s no time to explain.”

The Teskey Brothers Release A Cover Of Archie Roach’s ‘Get Back To The Land (feat. Emma Donovan)’

The Teskey Brothers are kicking off the new year by gifting fans with a soulful rendition of Archie Roach’s 2016 single, ‘Get Back To The Land’, featuring acclaimed singer-songwriter Emma Donovan. The release comes on the eve of The Teskey Brothers East-Coast tour including their show in Melbourne on Saturday January 22 with Orchestra Victoria, whom they collaborated with for the release of their recent album Live At Hamer Hall (Dec, 2021).The cover received the thumbs up from Archie Roach himself, who said of the collaboration:

“This song is very special to all our hearts. Archie Roach – what a legend! He really hit a nerve with this one. Something we’ve all felt from time-to-time while travelling, that yearning to get back to the land we know. Plus it was such an honour and privilege to share lead vocals with Emma Donovan. She is absolutely incredible on this track!”

Emma Donovan and The Putbacks will be supporting The Teskeys and Orchestra Victoria at their upcoming hometown show in Melbourne on Sat Jan 22.  The Teskey Brothers will also perform this Friday 14 Jan in Brisbane, supported by Dana Gehrman, while due to COVID restrictions indoors, their Sydney show will be postponed to Friday Nov 18.

The cover art for the single is a painting titled ‘Desert Breeze’ by Wurundjeri artist Grace Brown, licensed to the band for this single release. Brown says her work is known for depicting “the many forms of connection between communities and the earth” – a theme that resonates throughout Archie’s song and this performance by The Teskey Brothers and Emma Donovan.

The Teskey Brothers rounded out 2021 with the release of their acclaimed Christmas performance with Orchestra Victoria, Live At Hamer Hall.  On Live At Hamer Hall, the ARIA-winning, Grammy-nominated group’s songs were spectacularly reimagined by arranger Jamie Messenger and performed live onstage at the iconic Melbourne venue with Orchestra Victoria, led by conductor Nicholas Buc, and streamed live to fans across the world on YouTube, but unavailable on any other format until Dec. The 50-minute performance features hits from the band’s two critically acclaimed albums Run Home Slow (2019) and Half Mile Harvest (2017) and their two original Teskey Brothers Christmas songs, ‘Dreaming Of A Christmas With You’ and ‘Highway Home For Christmas’.

The collaboration was filmed and subsequently uploaded to YouTube in December 2020, a Christmas gift for Teskey fans around the world who at that point were seriously starved of live music. The feedback was unanimously glowing, leaving everyone little choice but to mix down and manufacture this “masterpiece” into a live album for wider release the following Christmas, 2021.

On April 8th, Matador Records / Remote Control Records will release Terror Twilight: Farewell Horizontal, an exhaustive 45-track reissue of the band’s much-loved fifth and final album. The new special edition compiles the remastered original album, B-sides, home demos, rehearsal tapes, era-appropriate live recordings, and even the rough tracks from Pavement’s scrapped session at Sonic Youth’s Echo Canyon studio. The LP will restore Godrich’s suggested sequence – which foregrounds the album’s headiest songs – while the CD preserves the final track order assembled by the band.

Originally released in 1999, Terror Twilight marked a departure from Pavement’s established operating methods. Which is to say that it was recorded with a big-time producer in an expensive studio. However, for all the talk of “polish” and “precision” it’s still very much a Pavement record. And a great one. Like every Pavement album that preceded it, Terror Twilight thrills and confounds. Often at the same time. Twenty-two years on, the songs remain moody, strange, and eminently deserving of re-celebration.

Following a 10+ year hiatus, Pavement recently announced a run of UK, European and North American reunion shows for 2022, including a five night run at the Roundhouse in London.

Pavement are Mark Ibold, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West. Among the most beloved acts to come out of the American underground in the 1990’s, the band released five era-defining albums – Slanted And Enchanted (1992), Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), Wowee Zowee (1995), Brighten The Corners (1997) and Terror Twilight (1999) – before disbanding in 1999. Pavement’s 2010 reunion saw them play four sold out shows in Central Park and top the bills of festivals worldwide including Coachella, Primavera Sound, and Pitchfork.

Today, Hippo Campus release ‘Ride or Die,’ the third single off their upcoming third studio album LP3, which arrives February 4 via Grand Jury Music. The band will perform the song on The Late Late Show With James Corden Monday, January 24. ‘Ride or Die’ is an anthemic anchor for LP3, a bombastic track loosely charting ride-or-die relationships across different capacities — communities, romantic partners, collaborators, and friends. It’s accompanied by a chilled-out, lo-fi video, directed by Joe Pease.

On the track, Jake Luppen says, “It’s one of my favorite songs on the record — you can really hear everyone in the band doing their thing.”

The single & video come a day after the band surprise-released 1,000 free limited edition flexi discs at record stores all across the globe. Fans in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan were given an early chance to hear the single before it officially arrived online today.

‘Ride or Die’ follows the recent releases of ‘Boys,’ which Billboard included in their Best Pride Songs of 2021 list and debuted #14 globally on the Spotify Indie Pop chart, and ‘Semi Pro,’ a sunlight-tinged song about the liberation that comes from making peace with stepping away that was named the #1 greatest gainer on the same chart.

What Hippo Campus wanted with LP3 was something all five of them could agree on, the way they’d made music in the early days of the band when they were in high school. As their profile grew, amassing nearly ¾ of a billion streams and hundreds of thousands of tickets sold, they found themselves compromising on their visions, thinking about how fans would interact with their music, and plagued by an unsustainable industry ecosystem.

LP3 is their strongest and most complete work yet — a freshly-inked portrait excavating young adulthood and identity and, more importantly, how that personal identity fits into a larger camaraderie. It looks at how growing up can just feel like something that’s always moving past you when you’re trying to grab a hold of it; it’s a push-and-pull of letting go or holding tighter — and figuring out what matters the most. Through cinematic, sonic clarity, is a sweeping account of courage and tenacity; tender-hearted stumbling that leads you on the right path after all.

Scholars invited to apply for 2022 Frank Van Straten Fellowship

Arts Centre Melbourne and the Australian Performing Arts Collection are excited to open the expressions of interest for the 2022 Frank Van Straten Fellowship.

Applications are now open and close on 11 March 2022 for a Fellowship which commences in July 2022.
The key objective of the Frank Van Straten Fellowship program is to enhance the analysis, discoverability and interpretation of the Australian Performing Arts Collection through high quality research and/or creative works that will resonate with diverse audiences.

The Fellow will be given access to the Australian Performing Arts Collection as well as a stipend of $15,000 to undertake research aligned to key areas including: circus, dance, music, opera and theatre (which includes comedy, vaudeville and magic).

The program also creates opportunities for the wider community to access the Australian Performing Arts Collection through the outcomes of Fellowship projects.

The Fellowship is made possible through the generous contribution of the Frank Van Straten AM and Adrian Turley Foundation. Frank played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Australian Performing Arts Collection in the late 1970s and was the founding director and first archivist of what was then the Performing Arts Museum. Arts Centre Melbourne has been the proud custodian of the Collection since its creation in the early 1980s.

Since launching in 2020 the Frank Van Straten Fellowship has produced outstanding works highlighting stories from the Australian Performing Arts Collection.

2020 Frank Van Straten fellow Dr Kate Rice was nominated for an Australian Writer’s Guild Award for Performing The Past, a creative docu-drama series produced as podcasts.

2021 recipient Cathy Pryor used her opportunity to create a digital exhibition titled Rare flowers and golden butterflies    diving into the history of three magical women Esme Levante, Myrtle Roberts and Loretta “Moi-Yo” Miller Montes.

Working for a third time with producer Dan Carey, Skinty Fia follows  2020’s brooding and vital UK #2, BRIT and GRAMMY-nominated sophomore album A Hero’s Death. The band first sprang to international attention in 2019 when their exhilarating debut album, Dogrel, became one of the most highly lauded releases of the year and won them a place on the Mercury Music Prize shortlist. With poetry infusing their music and lyrics, coupled with their joyous, intense live shows, Fontaines D.C. have rightfully earned a reputation as one of the most refreshing and exciting young bands in years; a once-in-a-generation youthquake of literate, rhapsodic brilliance. After picking up nominations at the BRITS (“Best International Group”), GRAMMYs (“Best Rock Album”), and the prestigious Ivor Novello Awards (“Best Album”), the band returned from pandemic lockdown to sell out all 10,000 tickets for their October show at London’s Alexandra Palace before wrapping up work on Skinty Fia.

Skinty Fia is an Irish phrase which translates to English as “the damnation of the deer” and the album’s cover art features a deer, plucked from its natural habitat and deposited in the hallway of a home, illuminated by an artificial red glow. The Irish giant deer is an extinct species and the band’s thoughts on Irish identity are central to Skinty Fia. While Dogrel was littered with snapshots of the Dublin characters – like the cabbie in ‘Boys In The Better Land’ – and A Hero’s Death documented the dislocation and disconnection the band felt as they travelled the globe on tour, on Skinty Fia Fontaines D.C. are addressing their Irishness from afar as they recreate new lives for themselves elsewhere. For a band whose hometown courses through their veins – “D.C.” stands for “Dublin City” – the album finds them trying to resolve the need to broaden their horizons with the affection they still feel for the land and people they’ve left behind.

There are echoes of Dogrel’s rumbustious rock ’n’ roll, and the bleaker atmospheres of A Hero’s Death, but Skinty Fia, the third in the triumvirate, is much more expansive and cinematic. Fontaines D.C. are a band in a state of constant evolution and this time the result is an album of shifting moods, startling insight, maturity, and considerable emotional wallop.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones share live video for new single ‘Minotaur’

St. Paul & The Broken Bones have released ‘Minotaur,’ the newest single from their ambitious forthcoming album The Alien Coast – out January 28 on ATO Records. The track’s accompanying live performance video, also released today, was shot in one take at Ol Elegante studios in the band’s hometown of Birmingham, Alabama.

‘Minotaur’ is an irresistibly groove-heavy falsetto-laced track partly inspired by the mythical beast as an alter ego. Rooted in a guitar loop that guitarist Browan Lollar dreamed up on a tour bus in Europe, the song serves as a soulful meditation on identity and trauma. “‘Minotaur’ is about fearing something within you, and the loneliness that comes from that,” says lead vocalist Paul Janeway. “Especially if you grew up in an abusive situation, there can be this feeling of having something in you that you don’t want to encounter or even recognize.”

The Alien Coast defies expectations yet reflects the galvanizing musicianship that has earned the band massive acclaim, three Billboard 200 debuts, an opening slot with the Rolling Stones, a legendary NPR Tiny Desk performance with over seven million views, and multiple national tv bookings including the first-ever musical performance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show and a Daytime EMMY nomination for one of their CBS Saturday Morning appearances.  Recently on his Rocket Hour radio show, Elton John, who is a longtime fan of the band and has hosted them at his Oscar party, said that “Paul Janeway is one of my favorite vocalists” and also shared a song from the new album.

The album’s recently released ‘The Last Dance‘ considers “the juxtaposition of dancing while facing certain doom,” says Janeway. Its video was directed by Machete Bang Bang (Coldplay, Jeff Goldblum, Evan Rachel Wood) and features dancer Liv Mai.  The band also recently shared a one-take live version of ‘The Last Dance’ as well as ‘Love Letter From A Red Roof Inn.’

Today, DIY singer-songwriter and producer dvr releases dirty tapes, his debut EP on XL Recordings / Remote Control Records. Expressing raw vulnerability, dvr explores the ups and downs of teenage life through wry lyricism, unique production, and infectious guitar hooks; a charismatic style that shines from all corners of the EP.

dirty tapes presents a full-circle moment for the musician, who has gone from a bedroom producer from North Berwick in Scotland, to an artist collaborating with Kenny Beats in just over a year. Through previous self-released projects including tape_01, thru the city and u can call me dillon EP, dvr became an organic, word-of-mouth success story, racking up millions of streams and amassing a committed Discord community alongside a diverse, growing fanbase which includes Snoop Dogg, FINNEAS, Omar Apollo, and Joy Orbison.

To mark the release of the EP, dvr premieres the visual to the newly released track ‘drugs’. Directed by underground visual-artist Elif Gönen aka FORLUCK (Lava La Rue, Louis Culture, Poppy Ajudha), ‘drugs’ is the third chapter in the visual story of the dirty tapes EP with the duo previously collaborating on the ‘lowlife (with kenny beats)’ and ‘stupid’ music videos. In ‘drugs’, dvr explores his own journey with migraine medication and the despair which surrounded it. Speaking on the new audio-visual, dvr says “it’s just about headache meds. don’t do drugs ?”.

ABOUT DVR

In less than a year, dvr has gone from a 16-year-old Scottish kid on the hunt for a cracked copy of Ableton, to an XL-signed artist collaborating with Kenny Beats at 17. As though A-Levels during a global pandemic weren’t enough to contend with, the prodigious singer, songwriter and producer has also self-released two EPs – tape_01 and u can call me dillon – lo-fi gems full of frank lyrics and endless promise. “Lockdown was a creative renaissance,” he says. “It gave me all the time and resources to do exactly what I wanted: wake up every day and work on music.”

With his soft, hybrid accent (“somewhere between Scottish, English and South African”) Dillon explains that when it comes to music, he writes straight from the heart. “My songs are basically diary entries,” he says. “If they seem kind of personal, it’s because they are. In fact, I might be oversharing.” He began building beats on Garageband at the age of 12, having just had his mind blown by the hip-hop on his friend’s iPod. Up until that point, Dillon’s experience of music looked a little different — his parents, both South African, had raised him and his older brothers on legends like B.B. King and Jimmy Hendrix.

At 15, Dillon taught himself guitar from a series of YouTube tutorials breaking down songs by Frank Ocean and quickly realised that making instrumentals on Garageband – though it had given him a solid foundation for songwriting – wasn’t going to cut it. Inspired, he convinced his school to reintroduce a long-shelved music technology A-Level course. “They had a really shitty old studio,” he says of the state school he attended in North Berwick. “All the equipment was falling apart but it was a space that I could go to make music.” Finding his feet through playing with influences, Dillon was beginning to think he might be onto something when the pandemic shut down his school. With the news that they’d be sent home in just two days, he set out on a mission to complete the song he had been working on. “It ended up being “Am Sleep” from tape_01,” he says. “It was the first proper song that I ever made; I was like, oh shit! It actually sounds quite nice!” The internet would soon agree.

“This is where Kenny comes into the picture,” explains Dillon. Newly confined to his home, the teen started hanging out on Twitch and quickly landed on Kenny Beats’ channel. “I went straight into the Discord and asked if anyone had a crack of Ableton,” he remembers. “It’s what I had been using at school but I couldn’t afford it.” After almost being banned for the request, Kenny himself chimed in and told Dillon to go grab himself Ableton’s 90 day free trial. “I was like… 3 months?! That’s all the time in the world!” In that 90 day period, Dillon wrote, produced and mixed his debut project, tape_01. On release, in June 2020, the mods of Kenny’s Discord urged the US producer to give the EP a listen, which he did… live on stream. The next day he reached out to Dillon directly.

The producer – who has worked with the likes of Rico Nasty and Vince Staples – wanted to collaborate, so Dillon sent him the demo for ‘lowlife’ and he loved it. With Kenny developing the production further, XL appeared on the scene and saw that same potential in Dillon. At the top end of 2021, he followed up his debut with a collection of demos called, u can call me dillon, including ’16’, a love song played on his school piano and recorded to his phone in just one take.

This September, with high school out of the way, Dillon finally released ‘lowlife’, his first official single and a downtrodden number in the vein of King Krule, inspired by a particularly dark period of illness. It will sit at the heart of the artist’s altogether grungier EP, dirty tapes, which is due in early 2022. The project documents the past year and a half of Dillon’s life – the ups and downs (but if he’s honest, mostly downs) of an unrelenting battle with both his physical and mental health. The struggle is audible. “The EP progressively gets more depressing,” he states, matter of factly. Its title track opener lays out the artist’s ambitions, while on ‘stupid’ (which is crying out for a Netflix coming-of-age sync) he starts to notice shit going wrong. Then, the self-deprecation of ‘lowlife’ hits and things spiral further, with Dillon admitting that ‘drugs’ was made “at a point of complete despair”.

He’s feeling a lot better now and the future excites him. Like a lot of young musicians coming of age during the pandemic, Dillon has never played a gig before and only attended one. Currently a one man band, he aims to keep it that way when he takes to the stage; with dreams of jumping between instruments like his idols Tyler, the Creator or Dave Grohl on Foo Fighters’ self-titled debut. The dichotomy of his idols evidenced in his visionary, genre-fluid sound.

What Dillon’s really excited about though, is the fact that people are already sliding into his DMs asking for production advice. The speed at which things have come full circle, without a doubt testament to both his ambition and talent. “I think the coolest thing ever is inspiring people with my music, in the same way that Kenny or Tyler or Dave did for me,” he says. “I just want to make other people want to make music.” And when the world hears dirty tapes, in all its raw vulnerability, it’s certain to have the desired effect.

Although you will spend your early gigs playing other peoples’ music, you might as well learn how to play others’ songs well. Listen to the radio, go to club nights and listen to DJ mixes online. Find out what works on the crowd and think about why it does. You need this knowledge when you start creating your racks.

DJs are the lifeblood of every party, so if you want to improve your skills and become a star at what you do, then you have to invest in yourself. With a home studio set-up, good speakers, and headphones, along with a solid understanding of how to mix music together and play beats that won’t disappoint, you will soon find yourself on the road to success.

The enfant terrible of classical music, French pianist Sofiane Pamart has announced the release of his second studio album, LETTER, out February 11 on Play It Again Sam, sharing lead single ‘LOVE.’ One of 2021’s top 10 most-streamed classical artists in the world, Pamart has built a career on defying elitist rules, imbuing his brooding, poetic and emotionally poignant classical compositions with flickers of hip-hop influence, opening the oft-cloistered genre up to a much wider audience. Steadfastly devoted to his own work as opposed to the interpretation of classical repertoire, the forthcoming LETTER aims to prove why the boundary-pushing, ground-breaking Pamart is worthy of his dazzling success.

Romantic and delicate, new single ‘LOVE’ illustrates the distance in love: referring, with a sweet melancholy, to the symbolic distance of detachment as well as the physical aspect of absence. The presence of birds in the video represents the volatile and evolutive dimensions of love. Whether it is through passion, an alliance, friendship, fear or affection, love always spreads, it’s ephemeral, fatal and ever-changing. The music video is once more directed by the secretive duo Sofiane Pamart and Guillaume Héritier with whom he just co-wrote the book PLANÈTE, their travel and poetry notebook.

After graduating with a gold medal from the Conservatoire National de Lille and becoming the go-to pianist for the French rap scene, Sofiane Pamart embarked on a solo career in 2019. This followed collaborations with artists such as SCH, Koba LaD, Maes, Niska, Joey Starr, Vald, Laylow, Tiakola, Zola, RimK, Da Uzi, not to mention Rilès, Bon Entendeur, NTO, The Magician and Marina Kaye.

Heralded as the “New Face of Luxury” by the Paris Salon du Luxe, Sofiane is recognised for his style, combining the elegance of high-end fashion with his own interpretation of street style. Working regularly with prestigious maisons and brands such as Maison Cartier, C. Bechstein, Moncler, Chivas, Etudes Studio, Lacoste, Kappa, Ubisoft, Fila Europe, Polaroid and more, Pamart is a unique artist – a haute couture pianist with an appetite for street style and hip-hop.
