– Tickets now on sale for newly announced shows
– The iconic Pete Tong speaks ahead of the venue’s launch weekend this month
Organisers behind The North of England’s new city centre “super club’, The Lofts, have today confirmed a string of new dates and late summer shows featuring some of the world’s most celebrated and hottest DJs.
Following the 1500 capacity venue’s launch event on Friday August 27th – featuring Pete Tong and Horse Meat Disco – The Lofts will now welcome Danny Howard (28th August), Louie Vega with Eli Escobar (3rd September), Mark Knight (10th September), Todd Terry and Melon Bomb (11th September), SKREAM (17th September) and Franky Wah (24th September) through its doors as part of its mission to continue to build the buzz within Newcastle’s nightlife scene.
Based in Newcastle upon Tyne – the new 1500 capacity ‘super-club’ features 3 separate rooms including a ground breaking sound system from L-Acoustic and a state-of-the-art, fully immersive light and visual show.
Taking place on Saturday 28th August, The Lofts will present an electric night of house with Danny Howard, DJ Spen, Frankie Foncett, Mighty Mouse and Ricky Morrison.
Danny Howard is a celebrated British dance music DJ, producer, and radio presenter, best known for presenting BBC Radio 1’s Dance Anthems with Danny Howard.
Howard is viewed by many as the heir to the dance music throne and his energy and impeccable tune selection will make for a special night come late August.
Danny says:  “They say the further north you go, the better the party, and Newcastle is cerainly proof of that!  It’s always an incredible vibe whenever I’ve played in the city before and I have a year’s worth of energy saved up for this, so see you on August bank holiday for a large one….!”
Meanwhile, Friday 3rd September will see the actual man himself, the definite house music bonafide King, Louie Vega, head to The Lofts with Eli Escobar.
Luis Ferdinand Vega Jr., better known as “Little Louie” Vega, is an American DJ, record producer and Grammy Award winner remixer of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is one half of the Masters at Work musical production team and is an all round musical legend.
Next to perform is Grammy Award nominated Producer & DJ Todd Terry who is one of the artists who helped to define New York’s dance and house music scene.  Terry will be supported by Melon Bomb – a house and disco collective of four DJs from Ibiza who have become symonymous for making parties and will bring a touch of the Island to Newcastle with their inimitable style of music.
Hot on the heels of the Vega date, The Lofts crew bring you Toolroom Records supremo, Mark Knight, with Illyus&Barrientos for a special night filled with house and good vibes on Friday 10th September.

On Friday 17th September, The Lofts are proud to present one of the hottest DJs on the scene right now, the high-rising dance star that is SKREAM.

As one of the UK’s best-loved selectors Skream has enjoyed the kind of consistency most DJs and producers can only dream of. His passion for collecting and playing music is unrelenting; disco, house, techno and everything in between makes him one of the UK’s most innovative and pioneering of DJs.
Completing the late summer run of high-profile shows at The Lofts Newcastle is Franky Wah on Friday 24th September.
The DJ/producer, is currently one of the hottest and most exciting names in the dance realm for 2021. Receiving rave critical acclaim from established dance peers, ongoing support from key industry figures and playing to thousands of fans on multiple festival stages have led to Franky garnering fan support in its thousands.
Frankie said today:  “I’m absolutely buzzin’ to announce I’m coming to play at the brand new superclub – The Lofts. I’ve been dying to play Newcastle and can’t wait to party with you all!”
As previously announced, BBC Radio 1 legend Pete Tong and Horse Meat Disco will open the venue on Friday 27th with support from Charlie Hedges, Mighty Mouse and Natasha Kitty Katt.
Local resident DJs John Dance, Jonny Burn and Kev Cannon will be on support duties all weekend.
There are few individuals in the world of dance music who can claim the kind of influence Pete Tong has had over the last twenty years.
As the voice of BBC Radio 1’s prestigious dance programming, Pete has held a commanding presence over the industry for more than two decades  With an unparalleled ear for new talent, Tong has become the leading tastemaker of the electronic generation.  Quite simply, an industry icon.
Speaking ahead of today’s fresh announcements, he said: “I’m very excited to be a part of launching Newcastle’s new superclub.  I have really missed playing in front of a live crowd and can’t wait to kick off with The Lofts.”

PRAISE FOR HAVIAH MIGHTY

“Her flow is fantastic, but the sound of her voice – it’s so dark and so deep too”
Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“After having a breakout 2020, Haviah’s unapologetic hooks
are bound to travel even further in 2021”

GQ

“Mighty’s flow is slick and her tone wary”
FLOOD

“Straightforward and urgent…piercing”
The FADER

“Ominous, bass-heavy beats and hard-nosed bars
that could go toe-to-toe with any challenger”

Pitchfork

“Haviah Mighty’s ‘Protest’ keeps 2020’s BLM demonstrations alive”
Rolling Stone

2019 Polaris Prize Winner

Haviah Mighty today shares her latest single, ‘Flamenco‘, from her highly anticipated Stock Exchange mixtape due out later this fall. The sensual, upbeat track embodying the striking energy of its namesake art form also features multiple Latin Grammy Award-winning artist, Mala Rodríguez. LISTEN HERE.

Fresh off a 2021 Prism Prize win for her powerful video for ‘Thirteen‘ illustrating the painful journey of Black people in North America, Haviah Mighty and Mala Rodríguez have teamed up with producer Taabu who is also known for his previous work on Haviah’s reggae & dancehall-inspired standout, ‘Wishy Washy‘. Says Haviah, “With this one, I wanted to try something different! Inspired by the cultural influences behind flamenco, this song allowed me to be a guest in a new genre. Mala Rodríguez really brought this record home – her verse added authenticity, sensuality and pizzazz. She has a great voice and message, and with her Spanish roots, I felt that she spoke to the energy of the song more directly than I ever could. It’s a feel-good song, with the intention of resonating on a dance floor, with the bass pulsing as heavily as the sweat on one’s brow as they hit their moves. This song is quite literally a vibe!”

A multiple Latin GRAMMY winner, Mala Rodríguez has held a prolific career for over two decades, collaborating with the likes of Big Freedia, Stylo G, and Juan Magán to being featured on Former President Barack Obama’s Summer Spotify Playlist with her song, ‘Yo Marco El Minuto’, and named as one of NPR’s ‘200 Greatest Songs by 21st Century Women‘. Watch the BlackPowerBarbie created visualiser for ‘Flamenco‘ HERE.

Haviah Mighty’s forthcoming Stock Exchange mixtape is the first full-length follow-up since her critically acclaimed, Polaris Prize-winning album, 13th Floor. Over the last year, singles from the mixtape have been building momentum, garnering praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Fader, Complex, The Source, HotNewHipHop, Clash, triple j, Consequence, and more. Stock Exchange includes collaborations from artists all over the world including her recent powerful statement with the UK’s Yizzy (‘Protest‘), collaborations with US rappers Jalen Santoy (‘Way Too Fast‘), Old Man Saxon (‘Antisocial‘), fellow Toronto artists TOBi (‘Good On My Own Tonight‘), Grandtheft (‘Avocado‘), and now Barcelona‘s Rodríguez (‘Flamenco‘), with more to be announced soon. The mixtape’s title refers to a reckoning Haviah had while reflecting on how artists are now forced more and more to validate their value based on data (followers, streams, subscribers) and with that shift, the feeling we are losing a part of the authentic human-to-human experience of music. Stay tuned for its release.

‘Flamenco feat. Mala Rodríguez‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

TINY LITTLE HOUSES RELEASE ‘I’M DOING JUST THE BEST THAT I CAN’ + ANNOUNCE RESCHEDULED TOUR DATES + NEW BRISBANE SHOW ADDED

written by the partae

Ahead of the release of Tiny Little Houses’ upcoming album Misericorde (out Nov 19), the band have shared their latest song ‘I’m Doing Just The Best That I Can’. It’s a relatable message for the current times and a fitting theme for their postponed tour dates, which now include a new Brisbane show at Brightside on October 16.

Frontman Caleb Karvountzis explains: “The song itself is explanatory, I wasn’t exactly deeply depressed when I wrote it but I wasn’t where I wanted to be. This was obviously far before months of forced COVID isolation, postponed shows, and a life caught in a continuous holding pattern. Now it seems this song becomes more relevant for us as each day passes.  Life hopefully will go back to normal soon, but for the moment we are doing just the best that we can.”

Sydney’s SoSo celebrate the release of dynamic debut EP I WOULDN’T CALL THIS SUCCESS…BUT IT’S CLOSE ENOUGH

written by the partae

Jam packed with impassioned lyricism and arrangements, delivered with punch and heart – Sydney’s SoSo present their first EP release, I Wouldn’t Call This Success…But It’s Close Enough.

Having introduced themselves to fans last year with single releases in ‘The Henry Lawson Jive’, ‘Skywriter’, ‘(Shit) Love Story’ and ‘(Shit) Love Story – Unplugged’, the pop punk group were quick off the mark in doling out music that was equal parts intensely personal, but also a lot of fun.

The EP shows the brightness and spirit of the band – there’s something instantly familiar about SoSo, yet very fresh as well. It makes for the perfect first listen.

Featuring their first four singles, as well as their most recent releases ‘Yeah Nah’ and ‘The Great Escape’ in 2021, I Wouldn’t Call This Success… comes as a bundled up presentation of chaotic energy and chest-pounding singalongs, akin to bands like Trophy Eyes, Violent Soho and Luca Brasi.

“We called the EP I Wouldn’t Call This Success…But It’s Close Enough because we’re all in our mid 20’s and ya know what, when you’re younger, I think you really have a warped perception of where you’ll be by your mid 20’s. You think you’ll probably have things way more figured out, more money in the bank, less emotional baggage…you name it.”

“It’s easy to think you haven’t found success as you’re getting older, because you’re not meeting whatever your (or other people’s) standards of ‘success’. It’s easy for us as musicians to fall into that trap too, especially when we’ve each been in failed bands (except Tahlia, who’s not been subjected to that – and hopefully won’t.) But realistically, we still have the opportunity to make great music, to get involved in some seriously sick creative projects thanks to our friends and ultimately, that might not be deemed success…but it’s close enough, right? “
SoSo

Recorded at Sydney’s Electric Sun Studios, SoSo worked with producer Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly) as well as James Paul Wisner (Stand Atlantic, Saosin) and Grant Berry to bring I Wouldn’t Call This  Success… to life.

PLAY/LISTEN

PRAISE FOR SOSO

“Bit Trophy Eyes, bit Jimmy Eat World, and a bit bloody good too…”
Triple J, Richard Kingsmill

“You ever meet a band that’s full of Dom Toretto’s? SoSo living their life a quarter mile at a time…”
Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“These guys have earned that one-to-watch tag…”
Life Without Andy

“Sydney’s SoSo have demonstrated a master handle on their sound indicating there’s plenty more to come from the group…”
Blunt Mag

With the announcement of the EP, SoSo have also revealed their tour plans for August and September. Taking I Wouldn’t Call The Success… taking to interstate venues for the first time, SoSo are champing at the bit to bring the EP and their new live show to crowds after so long off stage. Hot off the heels of their sold out ‘Yeah Nah’ single tour this year, SoSo got the taste for things and now, are ready to do it all again.

“Does ‘fucking pumped’ count as a useable quote? Okay, how about ‘pretty well excited’. Whatever – you get the gist. We’re stoked, the lineup is absolutely packed and we’re FINALLY going to get interstate. We needed to one-up the whole “sold out debut headlining ‘Yeah Nah’ single tour” which was already a massive accomplishment seeing as we booked and ran the events ourselves (with a little help from some friends).”

For Josh Lee, Founder and Head Designer of Fragile Minds, the opportunity to collaborate was, “Although tricky with covid, working with Maya has been great! We both resonate on similar ideas, so the process was both quick and enjoyable! With this collection I tried to keep everything as simple as possible. I wanted to make sure that the key features of the original garment were still present whilst still having that “Fragile Minds x MAY-A” kick. Maya’s an amazing artist and seeing what she’s doing is very inspiring! Like Angels Release ‘Teenage Dream’

by the partae August 17, 2021
written by the partae

After gaining noticeable recognition from their previous three releases, Like Angels return with another fun, hard hitting but relatable track. Their new single “Teenage Dream” is live now to accompany their upcoming self-taped docuseries “Almost Like Angels”, premiering on their YouTube channel late July.

Stream/Download “Teenage Dream” here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/likeangels/teenage-dream
Naturally gifted in music from a young age, allowed Sydney sisters Emmalisa and Sarah to develop their songwriting skills very early on. Now, still as passionate as ever about musical storytelling (as influenced by the likes of Ryan Tedder, Taylor Swift, Switchfoot & NF); Like Angels have a remarkable ability to pen meaningful, honest lyrics that connect with listeners on an emotional level – as evident in their previous three singles and now with “Teenage Dream”.
With each new release, Like Angels has received an increasing amount of press and media attention. Their debut single “Rain.”, which is an ongoing fundraiser song for Australian fire and drought relief, received notable attention from TikTok Star Nat Alise; Australian Community Media (The Advertiser); Good Morning Macarthur, Ava’s World Magazine and nationwide radio air time.
Their second single “Tunnel Vision” saw Like Angels tweeted by Project U Founder Nic Kelly, featured on Studio Spot The Podcast, Beat Mag and The Partae, included on Isaac Banks Top 15 Australian/NZ Tracks and interviewed on air with Hank David, host of nationwide Aussie Grown Radio.
In the words of Forte Mag, their “hypnotic” third single “Lose It” captured the girls “at their absolute best” and served “as a taste in the upward trajectory of Like Angels”. The song was playlisted by Nic Kelly, AusPoP Now, The Underground Stage & Emo Discovery; featured by Beat Magazine, Scenestr, Forte Mag, Girl Magazine, The Partae and Australian Community Media (The Advertiser) and on Live In Sydney, Campbelltown City Council’s Tourism Series “We Are Campbelltown”, Sweet Sunday Sounds and The Sounds of Macarthur 100.3FM.
Now, Like angels are back with another extremely honest, relatable bop. “Teenage Dream” is a song for anyone who’s ever been told not to “dream big” or that their aspirations & goals are insignificant, fleeting or something they’ll eventually “grow out of”. It’s a call to arms for all dreamers to continue working hard and to never let the negativity or doubts of others stop you from pursuing your passion. The song is for listeners of any age – whether you’re a child, teenager or an adult – it’s never too early to dream or too late to do what makes you happy!
Produced by Philippe-Marc Anquetil (Little Mix, One Direction, Jessie J, Ruel), the high energy, dance worthy track will transport you into a land of teenage dreams and nostalgia. Filled with unconventional sound samples, fast paced harmonies and clever lyricism – all neatly packaged within a high school marching band beat – the song inspires listeners to continue marching onwards, towards achieving their goals. Laced with humour and sass, “Teenage Dream” is the musical equivalent of putting a middle finger in the air at anyone who has ever tried to hold you back from reaching your goals. You’ll be hooked from the very first note.
Fittingly, the track will also act as the theme song for Like Angels’ upcoming self-taped Youtube series “Almost Like Angels”, which follows the sisters journey to reach their childhood dream of becoming international superstars, in a mockumentary style series (think “Flight of the Conchords” or “The Office”).
“Teenage Dream” is available on all streaming services as the next instalment of several upcoming releases by Like Angels.

Multi-instrumentalist Rod Moore shines in his singer / songwriter persona, delivering a collection of catchy, cleverly written tracks layered in synth tones and drum loops as an intentional nod to the ‘80s. Having developed his stage and studio chops playing instrumental surf guitar music, Rod Moore had long pondered the idea of stepping out front. “You Never Know If You Never Try”, released in 2018, marked Rod’s vocal debut and the inception of THE ROD MOORE BAND.  Seeped in ‘50s and ‘60s influence, the four all-original numbers were recorded with the accompaniment of some recently graduated music college alumni. 2020 provided Rod with the opportunity to revisit a batch of songs he had shelved eight years prior, culminating in the album “7635 South West Boulevard”. These well crafted and eclectic modern pop songs represent a stylistic shift inspired by acts as diverse as ELO, Moby, and Ray Charles. THE ROD MOORE BAND’s third release was clearly influenced by the state of the world at it’s time of inception. “Lockdown EP” delves deeper into the musical themes introduced on its predecessor, while focusing on tighter arrangements and big budget production - “Lockdown EP” was recorded at Vancouver’s HippoSonic Recording Studio, the former home of the Legendary Little Mountain Studios. “You Won’t Bring Me Down” was conceived while in Toronto during one of the deepest parts of COVID-19, and was definitely written out of frustration. It means exactly what it suggests - you won’t bring me down! I am a big John Carpenter fan, and the music he writes for his movies is always very unique, quirky and memorable. This song definitely carried some of that inspiration, which shows strongest in the opening, single tone riff. I recorded many of the core elements at home in my office, including the noisy guitar solo in the bridge." https://therodmooreband.com/ https://www.facebook.com/therodmooreband/ https://www.instagram.com/therodmooreband/

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in the inner west. Gadigal land.

How did you first start playing music?

We had a piano at my childhood home that I’d just baby hammer fist on some random notes and laugh at. I remember one evening my father played the Beatles song “Let it Be” when I was four and I was incredibly fascinated. He taught me for the first couple of weeks after that and then he decided to put me into piano lessons, the rest is history.

 What’s been happening recently?

Lockdown . Gigs and sessions have cancelled so I’ve just been getting into a nice routine for my wellbeing . A fair bit of meditation , working out, creative writing, drinking and playing video games with my roommates.

Your new single BÉSAME is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound is pretty much a culmination of what I was listening to at the time which was a lot of Blood Orange, Frank Ocean, Mac Ayres and Bryson Tiller. The songwriting was influenced by one of my past relationships, it all just poured out one evening.

What influenced the sound of this single and your upcoming EP?

I love trying to make something different each time, whether it’s through different instrumentation or weird effects. I collated some songs I had a vibe on and they all sound different yet they are all embedded in the same DNA and have a cohesive theme

How do you usually go about writing music?

It’s never the same. Sometimes I recycle old songs and make a Frankenstein version, which could be quick or extremely crafted and slow. Other times I just catch a vibe, hear something and finish it quickly on the piano or guitar.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

Bésame was recorded last year (2020) during lockdown. It started off with me messing around on that guitar lick at 2am, then I took it to my producer’s home studio once lockdowns were lifted. (Yianni Adams from Kyoshi). Sent it to Mr Clark Sims aka “Funk Father” from San Francisco who helped with the bass and my friend Elsa Parker who recorded beautiful backing vocals. The mix and Master was done by Hatch, a local legend. It also features a voice message sample by my friend Monica from California.

How did you approach the recording process?

A whole bunch of trial and error.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Currently I’m bumping lot of Jai Paul, Steve Spacek, Milan Ring, Flwr Chyld and anything from My Analog Journal.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love working out, FaceTiming my friends chilling with my dog, reading and listening to audiobooks. I’m into to this audiobook called PIMP: The Story of My Life by Iceberg Slim. It’s ice cold.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

Plans seem to change radically, so I guess I’m just going to stick to my health routine and release some more tracks.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Pho, which is a Vietnamese noodle soup, that’s made by either my Mum or dad. My favourite place to hangout is probably on my balcony.

Behmer, Reverse Prime and Starjack Release Pop-Influenced Bounce Single “Fake People.” Out Now on Purple Fly

by the partae August 14, 2021
written by the partae

Artists: Behmer, Reverse Prime ft. Starjack
Title: Fake People
Label: Purple Fly

Swedish bounce producer Behmer joins the ranks of Purple Fly with his debut track on the label, “Fake People,” featuring talented Asia-based producers Reverse Prime and Starjack. Much like NFT-fueled Purple Fly‘s previous releases, “Fake People” is hard to put in a box and innately stands out on the sonic spectrum; the track’s breathy vocals are offset by a slowed-down bassline and jazzy instrumentals. The combination makes for a pop-influenced, groovier version of Behmer‘s usual style, though its lyrics about the pursuit of authenticity in a world filled with much pretension will resonate with listeners of all genres.

“‘Fake People‘ is about the process of making your own music without caring about the money and what other people might think of it. Music should be a way of expressing your emotions through the creative process that is music production, and ‘Fake People‘ perfectly expresses this.” – Behmer

Purple Fly is an independent imprint utilizing cryptocurrency’s hottest frontier as a platform for the spectrum of electronic music. The label’s goal is to support collaborations of all forms of art, connecting music and stunning visuals for an immersive experience that spans the sonic realms of trance to trap. Purple Fly releases NFT directly on its official website with each music drop, enabling artists to have access to direct support from their fan base while expressing their creativity. Behmer, Reverse Prime and Starjack join Laidback Luke, BLVD., Fatman Scoop, Shaquille O’Neal, Sevenn, and more as part of the Purple Fly‘s family. Keep an eye out for more groundbreaking releases from the label in the near future!

Black Caviar Releases Groovy Vocal House Single “Collect Check,” Featuring EMIDA. Out Now on Dim Mak

Artists: Black Caviar
Title: Collect Check feat. EMIDA
Label: Dim Mak Records

Download / Stream

Black Caviar puts a cheeky spin on hustling for money with his new track “Collect Check” on Steve Aoki‘s Dim Mak. Featuring smooth, velvety vocals by EMIDA, this house gem opens with groovy melodies that gently meld into a deep, minimal bassline that feels right at home both on the dance floor or when listening at home. It was inspired by a relationship with financial instability, something that many people faced during the global pandemic, and the desire for success. “Collect Check” is Black Caviar‘s second release on Dim Mak, after 2019’s “Alright Alright, Okay / Zonin’” EP, who has also gained industry attention with releases on Atlantic Records, Universal Music, Casablanca Records, and more. Read on below for the full story behind “Collect Check“:

“When I first heard EMIDA‘s smooth vocals, I was blown away. Her style, tone, and delivery reminded me of Sade. I wanted to make sure the production sat in the right place that would compliment her vocal.” – Black Caviar

“The songwriting process was spurred from a period of financial instability. It led me to write about wanting to hustle out of that situation and aspire to a more opulent lifestyle. The lyrics’ collect cheque – run it back’ are about getting paid but still wanting more because It’s never enough. Ending with ‘run it forward’ – straight to the bank. It was a fun song to write because money can be quite a taboo subject. But with this track, I wanted to make it cheeky, sassy and cool.” – EMIDA

Amassing over 300M Spotify streams, New York City‘s Black Caviar has been solidified in the dance music world with genre-bending music to fans across the globe. Since the release of the 2017 hit single “Coco,” which has totaled over 18M plays on Spotify alone, the trajectory has only gone up from there. Originals, including “El Camino” and “What’s Up Danger” with Blackway, which was the lead track on the “Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse” soundtrack, found massive success in the form of a Gold Record Certification along with a Grammy Nomination. Coming off the heels of a momentous soundtrack accomplishment, Black Caviar was chosen to produce the official remix of the “Charlie’s Angels” theme song to be used in the 2019 update of the classic film. In addition to originals, Black Caviar‘s extensive track catalog includes a momentum-driven house twist on Dillon Francis‘ “DFR,” fresh rendition of Louis The Child and Foster The People‘s “Every Color,” and a popular vibrant rework of the Modjo‘s classic “Lady (Hear Me Tonight),” to name a few. Other high profile artists, including Lizzo, Tiesto, R3HAB, Jason Derulo, and more, have recruited Black Caviar to remix their tracks, and his catchy sound has also touched the commercials of Apple, eBay, McDonald’s, Victoria’s Secret, as well as various movies, Netflix, and TV series. Keep an eye out for more new music and live show announcements coming soon!

AUSTRALIAN ARTIST GEORGE ALICE JOINS INTERNATIONAL HEAVYWEIGHTS ON ORIGINAL SIN – 7 SINS SOUNDTRACK

by the partae August 12, 2021
written by the partae

Adelaide’s own female chanteuse, George Alice joins a line-up of international heavyweights on the release of Original Sin – The 7 Sins soundtrack.

Petrol Records/UMe recently celebrated the release of short film, Original Sin – The 7 Sins featuring the songs and music of INXS.

The accompanying 13-song soundtrack features a wealth of INXS-related material, including some dramatic reworkings and reinterpretations of some of the band’s most iconic tracks including, George Alice’s edgy take on “Suicide Blonde.”

Releasing her first song at the age of 15, George Alice’s debut track ‘Circles’ took the triple j Unearthed High crown . Since then, ‘Circles’ has been streamed over 8 million times and climbed to #1 on Australia’s viral charts; hit #31 on Spotify’s GLOBAL Discovery Chart and sat in the Top Ten of triple j’s Most Played.

After striking a global deal with LA based label Loma Vista Recordings (Denzel Curry, St. Vincent, Soccer Mommy) her second single ‘Stuck In A Bubble’ was added to triple j rotation in its first week; also picking up a National Nights add on Australia’s Hit Network. Sir Elton John also picked it up for a spin on his ROCKET HOUR show on Apple Music 1.

Other soundtrack highlights include Michael Hutchence‘s sultry, Spanish-flavoured cover of Eric Burdon & War’s 1970 collaborative classic “Spill The Wine,” Tricky‘s rapid-fire rumination on “Mediate,” the sultry vocals of Sweden’s Ida Redig on “Taste It” and “Kill The Pain” and Trevor Jackson’s pleadingly personal “Need You Tonight” along with international electropop sensation Loane‘s otherworldly French lead vocals on “Mystify.”

GRAMMY Award-winning Music Producer Giles Martin collaborated with Film Director, Amy Tinkham to develop the original concept along with Academy Award-winning sound engineer Chris Jenkins who mixed the 5.1 reimagined audio for the soundtrack.

Original Sin – The 7 Sins soundtrack is available on all major digital platforms HERE

Framed with minimal narration, the unscripted short film runs close to 26 minutes and is a story of isolation and love, inspired by the songs and music of INXS, as a young woman is catapulted through the 7 SINS to find true love and heal her heart.  Original Sin reflects the world’s current state of affairs and the universal quest for reconnection and romance. The short film is harmoniously intertwined with the symbolically poetic music of rock icons, INXS.

“We are honoured that our music inspired such a beautiful and innovative short film. INXS has always explored the marriage of our music with visuals, and we welcome the reimagined versions of our songs performed by a roster of contemporary and up-and-coming global artists. These versions of our songs are a perfect accompaniment to the film,” said Kirk Pengilly of INXS.  “Knowing that ‘Original Sin’ was Chris Murphy’s last passion project makes it even that much more impactful. We are deeply grateful that we are now able to share Amy’s emotive and thought-provoking short film with our audience. Play it loud…”

“Amy Tinkham’s artistic vision using our music within the film is refreshing and truly inspired, the global & diverse artists who brought their imagination through their interpretations of our songs really complement the film while still respecting our original music. It’s such an honour to have these incredible artists cover our music!! I’m humbled by their passion and in awe of their talent.” Said Tim Farriss of INXS.

NICHOLAS HAMILTON

by the partae August 12, 2021
written by the partae

What’s the creative process like for you?

It varies! I’m a big believer of the idea that a song knows where it wants to go, and will reveal itself in due course. If I wake up wanting to write a song, I likely won’t write a song that day, or at least a half-decent one. I do have some methods I use to help eke a song out, like being in a room with a writer far more talented than me, or sitting behind my piano alone and crying about something that happened yesterday.

Your single Pretty Young has a pretty cool music video with the story of your life playing out in a cinema. Can you tell us how this idea came about and what it represents?

The song itself has the ability to be seen as a young person reminiscing about being young, which it is in a way. But for the music video, I really wanted to capture my childhood as much as possible, to show the viewer/listener how much I have changed since I was a kid. How joyous and uninhibited I was. My mum has always had a harddrive of old photos on it, but it wasn’t until I went through it that I found all these videos of me as a kid that I’d never seen before. Seeing yourself as a child, knowing it’s you, but not remembering ever doing what you’re seeing on screen, is such a trippy experience.

Can you tell me a bit about your inspiration for ‘Pretty Young’?

As I said, this whole EP was brought together by songs I either wrote with someone more talented than me, or wrote sat behind a piano, crying. Pretty Young came from the latter. You never know where a song is going to go when you start writing, obviously, so I started penning this really nostalgic look back on when I was a kid, but got to the end of that first stanza and realised how silly I thought it was to be nostalgic for something that was so recent. That’s how the song turned into me comparing just how different and similar I am now, compared to when my age was still single-digits.

You have a new EP coming out on August 13 titled Pretty Young, what can we expect from it, and what’s currently your favourite track?

I love writing about personal experiences. I believe a song hits twice as hard if you know it’s about something the artist had to get through and learn from. The whole EP is filled with those songs. Little diary entries of my life so far. It’s so hard to pick a favourite song, but if I go by the song that means the most to me, it’s Pretty Young. It’s the only track on the EP that I wrote fully myself from start to finish, so it holds a special place in my heart. The unreleased single too, Everything to Lose, is such a groovy, funky song it’s ridiculous. Completely out of my comfort zone and such a tune.

I heard that you recently moved back to LA for a new role, and contracted the Delta Strain of COVID-19, can you tell us more about that experience?

Yes, and yes. I was living in the States for two and a half years and eventually moved back to Australia for a few months in April of this year, to expand my fanbase there and see family and friends again. I came back to LA mid-July, and a week and a half later I tested positive for COVID. It just sucked so much, timing-wise and the physical sickness part, obviously. Three days of the worst flu I’ve ever had times 10. At the peak, I couldn’t lift my head off my pillow without feeling faint. I’ve seen some people calling me out for complaining about my symptoms, which is entirely not the point I’m trying to make. I’ve got a platform, specifically targeted towards young people, and I want to use it to tell people to get vaccinated. I was lucky to have gotten vaccinated when I came back to the States, and it still hit me off my feet. Who knows how bad it would’ve been if I was unvaxxed.

So we know you can act, we know you can sing, what do you do in your spare time? DO you have any spare time??

I’m lucky to have two simultaneous careers that stemmed from hobbies! I love music and movies, and I get to make both of them, insanely lucky. I like playing sports and video games too, mainly as social activities. I like being with people whose company I enjoy, no matter what we’re doing. Alcohol is encouraged.

What does the next 5 years look like for you?

Who knowwwwwws! I used to be one of those people who planned year by year schedules, knowing what I wanted to do in 2025 before 2020 even started. The pandemic changed my whole mindset there, I’m much more of a daily person now. I focus on what I can do today to make tomorrow better for me and the people around me. Sticking to that has done me well so far.

Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with?

I’m in the fortunate position of being able to think about both actors and musicians I’d like to work with in the future. I’ve always wanted to work with Tom Hanks. I just love how he works and his humility and kindness on set. He’s definitely someone I try to mirror when I’m on set. Him, Taika Waititi and Florence Pugh are actors I’d love to work with in the screen industries. Music-wise, being onstage with Lewis Capaldi, Aloe Blacc or Billie Eilish is my absolute dream.

What bands have influenced your sound?

I feel like, sound-wise, I’ve been told which artists I’ve been influenced by by other people more than realising my sound influences myself. Artists like George Ezra and James Bay have been thrown at me, both of which are massive compliments. I’ve always felt like I was influenced more by the artists I listened to while I was growing up. Less in a sonic way, moreso in how my love of music was formed from a young age. I would go on road trips and short drives with my family and listen to their favourite artists, like my dad’s The Eagles and America, my mum’s Kenny Rogers and Poison and my brother’s Triple J tastes. Those drives are where I believe my passion for music started growing.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUNK VETERANS FACE TO FACE RELEASE NEW SINGLE “FAREWELL SONG” OFF FORTHCOMING ALBUM NO WAY OUT BUT THROUGH OUT VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 10

FAT Wreck Chords and iconic West Coast rock band face to face are excited to present “Farewell Song,” the second single to be lifted from the Friday, September 10 release of the band’s brand new album, No Way Out But Through.

Produced by the Juno Award-winning Seigfried Meier, No Way Out But Through is a record that brims with intelligent songwriting, arena-sized choruses, big guitars, and a distinct musical fluidity that comes from playing together as a band for over 30 years.

Showcasing the more thoughtful and experimental side of the band’s profile, album closer “Farewell Song” is about moving on in one’s life and is a send-off to the past. “Scott [Shiflett] brought in ‘Farewell Song’ and at first I was reluctant to work on it because I thought it sounded like The Cure or something,” frontman Trever Keith recalls. “However, as we were working on it, I realised that this was a song I could pour myself into as an artist and I think it’s one of the strongest songs on the album.”

Stream “Farewell Song” HERE

Pre-Order No Way Out But Through

face to face are a rarity in the music world: A band that not only helped define a sound, but who continue to fine-tune their music with each subsequent release. This is undoubtedly true of the band’s tenth full-length No Way Out But Through, a melodic-punk masterpiece teeming with blistering guitar riffs, fleet-fingered bass lines and vocal harmonies that are so infectious they’ll be rattling around your brain for weeks on end. Then again this should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed face to face’s 30-year history.

The band—guitarist/vocalist Trever Keith, bassist/background vocalist Scott Shiflett, guitarist Dennis Hill and drummer Danny Thompson—once again reject complacency and push their musical limits on the follow-up to 2016’s return-to-form, Protection.

“This lineup of face to face has been intact for well over a decade at this point and it’s the best lineup the band has ever had,” Keith explains. “On ‘Protection’, I was intentionally writing songs that were reminiscent of our first three albums but on this album I was able to try some different things. There’s a freshness and a newness to the way that these songs came together, and I think that’s really evident when you’re listening to this album.” This connection and chemistry lies at the core of No Way Out But Through and is why the inherent energy on the album sounds so effortless.

No Way Out But Through sees Keith, who has always been known for his motivational anthems, penning some of his most introspective lyrics to date. “I wouldn’t consider this to be a concept album but I did base each song on a thematic idea this time around,” he explains. These themes range from overcoming anxiety to self-acceptance, ideas that have been a constant aspect of face to face’s mission statement as their sound has constantly evolved. “I really like writing songs that are motivational or inspirational on their face but ultimately have a message that helps people become a better version of themselves,” he adds.

While most bands celebrating their 30th anniversary are releasing reissues and retreading their past, face to face have crafted one of the most vital and energised albums of their career with No Way Out But Through. In fact, in many ways the album is the sound of a band hitting their stride with all cylinders firing. So what is the secret to face to face’s enduring vitality?

“We’ve had our hiatus, we’ve made art records, we’ve made acoustic albums, but the best path for us has always been forward, and so here we are,” Keith summarises. “We may be in our fifties now but we wanted to send a message that we are not mellowing out and that this is energetic, hard-hitting punk rock. We’re full-steam ahead as a band and as songwriters.”

Bae Baracus

by the partae August 11, 2021
written by the partae
What is your name and role within Bae Baracus?
Dolly: Dolly, vocals
Clef: I’m Clef, I’m sorta like a co-pilot / instrumentalist. Lin helms the ship and I groove with it!
Lin: Lin, writer, arranger, keyboards, programmer and producer

How did the band form?
Lin: We got together during one of my songwriting workshops – it was just the three of us and we gelled instantly, so decided to form a band
Dolly: Lin, composer and producer extraordinaire brought us together to try out some songwriting using her song seeds as a base, and we managed to write an EP over just a day and a half. So we decided to become a band!
Clef: Lin got me and Dolly in studio for a weekend and we jammed out some magic

Where are you currently based?
Dolly: Vancouver, in Beautiful BC (unceded Traditional Coast Salish Lands including the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ) and Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm) Nations.)
Clef: Sunshine Coast, BC
Lin: I’m in Roberts Creek (xwesam) on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, which is on the traditional unceded territories of the Sechelt and Squamish Nations

What’s been happening recently?
Lin:  I’ve been super busy directing the music on upcoming video game Age of Empires IV, just released a collaborative album project under the artist name Julia Sound and most recently, writing, recording and producing Bae Baracus’s debut album
Dolly: I attended the first live music show in well over a year, which was incredible. I really missed the sense of community you get at a concert.
Clef: Live music is back in little pockets and I’ve been catching the wave! I’ve been DJing and doing a live set here and there, but my big ticket these days is Tetrahedron, my extemporal comedy rock spectacle!!

Your new single ‘Definition Of Love’ will be out on August 20, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
Lin: For Definition of Love I had this beat where I’d gone back to some old school 90’s samples and wanted to evoke that golden era of early house music… We had been working on another song which was kind of channeling New Order, and Dolly’s lead vocals on DoL is also rooted in that Bernard Sumner mood. Clef brings his exuberant energy and funky edge to the track!
Clef: There’s this acid-house party feel to the track that I found really inspiring. My verse felt absurd to me during the recording but the hype is for real and that’s what I like about it!

How did the single come about?
Clef: Lin had a frame and some chords, I laid down some guitar, bass, some bleep bloops, Dolly penned some lyrics, we recorded and ba-bam!

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
Lin: I’ve been engineering, producing and mixing for a long time, and have my own studio The Sound Garden, where we wrote and recorded the single and upcoming album. Once I’ve finished the production and mix, I love working with mastering engineer Ohan Vandermeer at Dialled In Audio for the mastering
Clef: Sound Garden Retreat studio in Roberts Creek, Sunshine Coast BC. Check out Lin, it’s awesome!

How did you approach the recording process?
Dolly: We started with song seeds that Lin wrote and took inspiration from there. I was also inspired by a DJ set that Clef did on one of the nights during our time recording at Sound Garden Retreat.
Clef: There was no wading around in the shallow end, with Bae Baracus we jump from the high board head first!
Lin: What I love about working with Bae Baracus is that we have this really fast approach to the writing and recording process. Dolly is influenced by punk (& other genres) and I think that approach also influences us as a band. I love the way we flow so fast and throw down ideas in a flash and then move on – it removes that agonising pursuit of perfection which can in itself be a blocker

What programs/equipment did you use?
Lin: I use Logic Pro as my DAW (been using it since the 90s!), and have a full complement of virtual instruments, but we also love dusting off some classic old pieces when we work as a band – Roland Juno 60, Roland JX3P (originals not the mini resissues), Akai 3200XL sampler, 80’s Yamaha keyboard and a crackly old Melos echo unit all make an appearance
Clef: I like to bring a carload of stuff and see what inspires. I have a Yamaha PS-20 that got a lot of use this session, and of course my trusty OP-1 from Teenage Engineering, my trusty right hand synth. Plus a neat Mexican telecaster and an old fender jazz bass.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Dolly: Vovoid, Belle & Sébastien
Clef: I’ve been on a Boiler Room kick recently, a find all sorts of amazing artists and DJs from all over!
Lin: I’m a bit all over the map at the moment… I’m loving tracks on Nithin Sawney’s recent ‘Immigrants’ album, love TV composer Dominik Scherrer’s work and since my other half left an old Mary J Blige CD in the car, have been belting out “No More Drama” lately too

What do you like to do away from music?
Dolly: I ride a motorcycle, and I’ve taken up mountain biking recently.
Clef: I became a dad in September 2020 right before the 2nd wave lockdown, so my winter comprised of poopy diapers, walking my dog with a baby strapped to my chest, and not playing music live 🙂
Lin: Growing vegetables… I love the cycle of the seasons and the challenges that growing food without chemicals presents. And I love cooking, preserving and eating the results 🙂

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?
Lin:  No solid plans, but looking forward to getting the Bae Baracus album out and hoping that we can book some live shows once the world is less Covid-y
Clef: Live music seems to be coming back so I’m gonna get while the getting’s good! More shows, DJ gigs, refine my live setup, etc.  You can’t take for granted that in a moment’s notice your art can be deemed unsafe for human consumption. After a year of prohibition tho, I’ve never felt more inspired to go out and get after it. Get ready for a huge post-pandemic proto-punk phase. Music is about to get reeeeeally good!
Dolly: Nothing! It’s hard to plan anything these days.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Dolly: Sushi, and the Heatley bar in East Vancouver.
Clef: I’ve been really digging Gibsons Tapworks these days, craft beer and they just put in a kitchen to up the food game and, WHOA did they ever deliver! Also, the patio is low key the best patio in BC.
Lin: Favourite fluctuates between a good pizza and good curry 🙂 For hanging out, there’s a great organic beer farm on the Coast called Persephone… really cool chill place to hang.

Chapter Music announce new signing: Teether & Kuya Neil

When rapper Teether & producer Kuya Neil began to collaborate in late 2020, two powerful forces in the Naarm/Melbourne underground came together to create something rare and special. This week, the pair announce their signing to legendary Chapter Music and share arresting new track, ‘Theory‘ out today.

In a statement on their new signing, Chapter Music’s Ben O’Connor and Guy Blackman share, “At Chapter Music, we’re over the moon to announce that we’ve signed the exceptionally exciting Naarm/Melbourne duo Teether & Kuya Neil. Their magnificent EP God of Surprises, released earlier this year via great local label X Amount Records, has been on repeat at Chapter HQ ever since it came out.”

At 25, Teether already has a deep dive catalogue of solo releases to his name, largely released via the X Amount collective of which he is a founding member. There are also collaborative projects like Too Birds and even atmospheric metal bands stretching back to the early 2010s.

Kuya Neil is just as prolific. His CV ranges from membership of NZ “family rap ensemble” Fanau Spa, to collaboration with local heroes Papaphilia and Various Asses, to his work with Melbourne Sound School.

Together, Teether & Kuya Neil make future-focused rap informed by modern club styles like footwork, gqom and bass music. Teether’s nonchalant but vivid words infuse Neil’s disorientating, hyper-modern production.

‘Theory’ by Teether & Kuya Neil is out now on Chapter Music, with more announcements expected to follow soon.
