PRAISE FOR LUKE HEMMINGS

“A shimmering power ballad”
Billboard

“Luke Hemmings reckons with the passage of time”
NYLON

“Both parts emotional and thrilling”
Bridget Hustwaite (triple j)

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Hemmings today shares his latest single, ‘Motion‘, which was premiered on triple j’s Good Nights overnight and is lifted from his forthcoming debut album When Facing The Things We Turn Away From, out via Sony / Arista this August 13. LISTEN HERE.

‘Motion‘ is a light funk-come-psych rock adjacent affair, in contrast to the rousing introduction of his solo debut, ‘Starting Line‘. Kicking off with a rolling guitar riff, ‘Motion‘ is layered with oscillating synths, phasers and towering, wall of sound vocals reminiscent of The Flaming Lips and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Of the track, Luke shares, “This song is about having a sense of distrust with the way you perceive your own thoughts and the way the world moves around you. It was written about a time when I felt like the voices in my head weren’t my own and my sense of reality felt blurred.”

With ‘Starting Line‘, Luke Hemmings introduced the world to a new side to himself and his artistry, born out of need in the midst of the pandemic. For the first time, the Sydney-born and Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate channels his dedication, passion, and energy internally, on his forthcoming record, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From.

Motivated by pushing his creative limits, Hemmings’ solo debut is a natural and necessary sidestep to help Luke make sense of a decade spent in constant motion. Following his inner-muse and authentic creative self, the result is a definitive, deeply personal record about Luke: the artist, songwriter, musician, and human.

Met with a sea of support globally, ‘Starting Line‘ has received widespread acclaim and support, including Billboard, NME, The Daily Telegraph, NYLON, Pedestrian TV, triple j, RAGE, and many more, boasting over 6 million streams globally and 1 million views on the official music video. The greatest challenges arise from within, and Luke Hemmings’ solo debut is the outcome of rising to that occasion.

On the heels of announcing his new album, Toronto-based musician Homeshake, born Peter Sagar, returns to share a new offering from Under The Weather – out September 10 via SHHOAMKEE / Sinderlyn / Remote Control Records.

Designed and directed by Pete Sharp, ‘Passenger Seat‘ is an animated, intergalactic highway short that perfectly captures the track’s intimate and meticulously crafted soundscape. “The details in each scene are amazing,” Sagar says. “They compliment the minimalist production of the song so well.” Of the collaboration, Pete Sharp says, “I love the music of Homeshake! When I heard the title ‘Passenger Seat’ I thought ‘passenger seat—cars—traffic jam—in space?’ I think the slow moving interstellar pile up really reflects the pace and mood of the track. I hope the general public does too!” The song is the second track from the album following ‘Vacuum,’ which arrived alongside an animated video directed by Jordan Speer and produced by Brain Dead Studios.

Written in 2019, Under The Weather, is Sagar‘s fifth studio album under the Homeshake moniker. The album is an atmospheric, 12-track reflection on the artist’s life and depression, and documents a long, unrelenting period of sadness for the artist. The album will arrive alongside a special line of Under The Weather products in collaboration with aforementioned LA based streetwear brand Brain Dead. Available for pre-order today, products include vinyl for the record, which also consists of a limited edition Sinderlyn color way.

Unlike most of us, Peter Sagar — also known as Homeshake — was staying at home a lot, long before the pandemic. Sagar wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under the Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness. “I was in a deep, deep depression,” he recalls of that time period now. “Tours were breaking me. It was awful.” Sagar and his partner were living in Montreal and while everyone was out being social, he was inside listening to ambient music, binging Star Trek, and writing songs. (Sound familiar?) “It was a bit of a dark pit,” he says. “That’s kind of what the whole album is about.”

Under the Weather follows Sagar’s life and the depression that consumed him in 2019 — after a brief album intro, it jumps right into ‘Feel Better,’ a reflection on attempting to buck up when the weather outside is grim. The album is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line. In ‘Inaminit‘, Sagar cancels plans when he’s feeling low; the closing track, ‘Tenterhooks‘ sees Sagar’s deliverance into the depths of despair: “Feel myself drying up / feel myself turn into dust,” he sings over a funhouse mirror synth. “Oftentimes when you’re in a dark place, you’re supposed to journal and that helps release the pressure,” Sagar says. “For me, it always found its way into the music.”

Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper’s Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of “dry, pristine digital sound” that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the Homeshake project in the first place.

“I didn’t realise how much I missed having a second set of ears. It’s pretty invaluable,” Sagar says. He would send all the of tracks back and forth with Nathan over the course of 2019, which made the process a longer one than he was used to. “There are a lot of things that I probably wouldn’t have done that Lucas did do. I would tend to do a lot of softening of things, a lot of making everything super bassy and gentle. Lucas was aware that sometimes you needed some punch and grit.” To Sagar, those additions made the record what it is — a melodic, honest look at personal emotional struggle.

As Sagar readies it for release this September, the record he wrote about feeling isolated, alone, and despondent has begun to seem eerily prescient. “People will probably think that I made Under the Weather during or about Covid,” Sagar reflects now. “I was just already living my life that way.” For Sagar, the feelings he experienced over the course of that year are far from over — “I’ve been writing about feeling isolated my whole life,” he says — but with age, he has come to understand them better. “I had a fairly clear idea what the album was going to be like based on where I was emotionally at the time,” he says about Under the Weather. “I just try to make music that is honest about how I’m feeling.”

SHARES NEW SINGLE
‘THESE THINGS WILL COME TO BE’

OUT SEPTEMBER 3 ON NINJA TUNE

Swedish producer DJ Seinfeld today shares a euphoric, dance floor-ready single titled ‘These Things Will Come To Be’, marking the second track to be lifted from his highly anticipated forthcoming album Mirrors. Speaking of the track, Seinfeld (real name Armand Jakobsson) commented: “To me this track feels like it could’ve been included in my first album. Partly because I still am drawn to aspects of that sound, and partly because I still feel inspired by the optimism that came out of difficult times. ‘These Things Will Come To Be’ refers to that optimism, and I hope it’s something that you’ll all enjoy.”

Also announced today, DJ Seinfeld will be launching a new monthly live-series on Spotify’s Greenroom platform. Titled ‘GALAZY ROOM’ the inaugural show will take place at 12AM AEST on July 30 and will feature informal discussions around one of Armand’s burning interests: Space. DJ Seinfeld, musicians and friends – including Teira and Baltra – will join Armand to discuss everything from The Universe to Space Exploration to Unexplained Aerial Phenomena, and maybe find time to share some music too.

Mirrors is out September 3, 2021 on Ninja Tune, with new single ‘These Things Will Come To Be’ out now.

Recorded between Berlin and Malmo, Mirrors is the follow-up to Seinfeld’s critically acclaimed 2017 debut album Time Spent Away From U and his first for Ninja Tune. Named after a quote by Armand’s favourite writer, Argentine novelist Julio Cortázar, the album finds the producer in a more settled and grounded mood after an unfortunate family incident forced the producer to spend more time at home in his native Sweden over the past few years. Recently announced alongside italo-tinged summer anthem lead single ‘U Already Know’, it received impressive support from the likes of RA, The Fader, DJ Mag, Clash, XLR8R and Mixmag, who unveiled Seinfeld as their July cover star just last week. Radio support has also come from the likes of Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Jack Saunders and the Blessed Madonna.

Rising to prominence in 2016 as part of the lo-fi house scene alongside producers including Ross From Friends and Mall Grab, DJ Seinfeld (whose name is a result of extended sessions watching the classic American sitcom after a breakup and move to Barcelona) released his debut album in 2017 which received plaudits from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork to name a couple. It also gained attention from contemporaries like Flume, Flying Lotus, Bonobo and Martin Garrix and saw Seinfeld become a globally in-demand DJ playing sets everywhere from Glastonbury to Coachella, Warehouse Project, Sónar By Night and MoMaPS1, sharing stages with everyone from Jeff Mills to Stormzy, Underworld and Bicep as well as accompanying Disclosure on several dates of their US tour. In 2018 he became part of a select group of DJs that includes Moodymann, DJ Koze and Nina Kraviz when he was chosen to curate an edition of the iconic DJ Kicks mix series. To top it off, Aphex Twin began playing his track ‘Sakura’ in his live shows.

JOY ORBISON Announces still slipping vol. 1 mixtape His first-ever long from project Out August 13 via XL Recordings

On 13th August 2021, Joy Orbison – the artist name of Peter O’Grady – will release his first-ever long form project. The fourteen-track mixtape titled still slipping vol. 1 is the latest creative milestone from an artist who has been shaping and redefining the electronic music landscape since his teens. Over a decade into a career that has seen him constantly defying categorisation, Joy Orbison is more in-demand and relevant than ever.

Highly anticipated would be an understatement – so influential are his releases to date, it’s difficult to believe he’s never released a full-length project. The name of the mixtape may already be familiar – an evolution from 2019’s acclaimed Slipping EP and also the name of a Joy Orbison curated radio station (“Still Slipping: Los Santos“) within Grand Theft Auto’s immersive world – but in terms of scope and ambition, still slipping vol.1 is without doubt O’Grady’s boldest and most expansive project yet.

First coming to prominence in 2009 with his debut single ‘Hyph Mngo’ – a track that became a bonafide phenomenon and changed the dance music underground forever – the London musician, DJ and producer is undoubtedly one of the most renowned, respected and influential electronic artists of his generation. Whether through his own game-changing releases such as ‘Ellipsis’, ‘GR Etiquette’, ‘Big Room Tech House DJ Tool-TIP!’ or the Slipping EP, collaborations with the likes of Mansur Brown, Overmono and cutting edge Japanese clothing label Cav Empt, a run of genre-defining releases on his Hinge Finger label, a BBC Radio 1 residency and live appearances that span the most credible underground nights to festival headline slots around the world, the name Joy Orbison has been a constant byword for understated, uncompromising quality.

still slipping vol.1 is the next evolution in his journey. Fans of Joy Orbison’s DJ sets and radio shows will already be aware of his diverse tastes and inspirations, represented here through a roll call of delicately curated, mainly UK, collaborators that include Herron, James Massiah, Bathe, Léa Sen, Goya Gumbani and Tyson. Just as important are the voices Joy Orbison’s family – mum, dad, sister Sarah, uncle Frankie, uncle Keith (recently departed), auntie Helen and cousins Lola, Mia and Leighann, who was the first person to introduce O’Grady to drum and bass and garage as a kid and stars on the mixtape’s cover art. They appear throughout the record via a series of voice notes, his only contact with his family during this year of worldwide lockdown and an intimate, vicarious glimpse into the personal world of an artist who has generally side-stepped the public gaze.

The result is Joy Orbison’s best music to date and a powerful distillation of his musical career so far. Recorded in his Walworth Window studio in south east London, this is serious, future-facing sound system music cut through with a sense of warmth and playfulness much needed for these times.  See below for some words from Joy Orbison on the mixtape.

still slipping vol.1 will be available on LP, CD, cassette and on all digital services. Meanwhile, to celebrate with the release of still slipping vol.1, Joy Orbison has also announced an exclusive collaboration with legendary Tokyo-based clothing label Cav Empt. The long-time friends and collaborators (Joy Orbison has previously performed at Cav Empt parties in London and Tokyo and contributed to their renowned tape series) have come together to produce a range of “still slipping” merchandise including t-shirts and socks. This is Cav Empt’s first-ever collaboration with an artist and is sure to be highly sought after.

All still slipping vol.1 formats and merchandise are available to pre-order today HERE.

Talking about the mixtape, Joy Orbison says:

“i’ve been working on the idea of a mixtape for a while now. i’d never really wanted to make an album, but the way I’ve been making and listening to music has changed a lot over the last few years and it doesn’t always make sense on a single or EP. i also had this realisation that I wish my records were better suited to soundtracking people’s bus journeys but so far I’ve only really given you enough music to get half way up walworth road.

i’ve made a point of making this record feel really human, light hearted and humorous in places too so that the weirder bits of the record don’t seem too wanky or self-indulgent. there’s so much electronic music that I love but I never really connected to the space age, distant land of whoever your graphic designer is presentation of it all – so hopefully this feels a bit more personal. there’s a load of voice notes from family members in there too, pretty much my only contact with them over lockdown. my dad recently showed me this extensive list he’d made of the amount of times we’d moved house growing up (my head count is 16 btw). he’s an engineer so a lot of my childhood was spent following the work. unsurprisingly that’s led to me thinking about family & belonging as i’ve got older and how that relates to my music.

in my head this is a soul record but I’m not sure that’s how people will hear it. the cover star is my wonderful cousin Leighann who introduced me to jungle, d’n’b & uk garage at a young age. without her I wouldn’t be doing what I do today. i love this picture by Rosie Marks, it reminds me of a sample i wanted to nick from a Potter Payper interview that pretty much sums up my career – ‘you never know what a kind word could do for someone’. with that in mind I wanna say a big thank you to all the collaborators on this record, my noble friends (you know who you are), the good people at XL recordings and most of all my partner in crime William Aspden (he’s got kind words in abundance).

hope you enjoy it, thanks for your patience and support – it means everything. x p”

Oscar Jerome & Ben Hauke – ‘No Need’
Out Now

Genre-bending trailblazer Oscar Jerome, teams up with South East London DJ and sonic experimenter, Ben Hauke for ‘No Need’, out today via DMY. The pair come together again following a collaboration in 2019, for Oscar’s release ‘Gravitate’ and took the opportunity during 2020’s lockdowns to reignite their creative output as a duo. The release blends Jerome’s jazz, soul and guitar elements with Hauke’s influences from house, broken beat and 90’s hip-hop, across the luminous 2-track EP.

Oscar Jerome comes off the back of his 2020 breakthrough debut album ‘Breathe Deep’ which featured Lianne La Havas and picked up glowing endorsements from across the music industry. Jerome was labelled as The Guardian’s ‘One To Watch’ as well receiving frequent support and playlisting across the likes of 6 Music, Radio1 and 1Xtra, for his unique ability to supply absorbing grooves alongside arresting & poignant lyrics.

An in-demand singer-songwriter and former member of Afrobeat collective, Kokoroko, he’s established himself as a key player in not only South London’s burgeoning contemporary Jazz scene, but the global stage too. Performing at festivals such as PukkelPop, GALA Festival and Turning Tides, the London native also lines up a 20-date UK & EU tour this autumn.

Talented South East-London based producer, DJ and composer Ben Hauke has made a name for himself with releases on labels such as Far Out Recordings, Cooperation Records and YAM Records, whilst finding a consistent home on his own Woop Records. Recent release ‘ONE YEAR DANCE’, was added to 6 Music’s playlist and received heavy support across stations such as Rinse FM, NTS and Balamii. Touting a distinctive sound that can be applied to a multitude of genres, Hauke isn’t afraid to express himself and effortlessly moves across spaces, such as jazz, breaks, garage and acid.

With jazz inflicted percussion and Jerome’s ethereal voice, title track ‘No Need’ kicks off the EP, bringing in wider house elements through Hauke’s intricate production. ‘Cosmic Egg’ ventures into more experimental territories, with Jerome painting a picture above the pulsating hip-hop beat.

Dripping in each other’s signature sounds, Jerome and Hauke perfectly compliment one another’s styles on the release. From floating vocals and jazz guitar riffs, to solid production and subtle instrumentation they supply an example of how to collaborate across a number of styles. Moving further to cement their positions in their respective fields, displaying their ability to create rich sounds and tapestries with incredible breadth.

The sound of Paul McCartney chewing celery! Two-decades on, Super Furry Animals reveal isolated audio of the former Beatle’s contribution to their celebrated album… RINGS AROUND THE WORLD

by the partae July 21, 2021
written by the partae

– McCartney provided ‘carrot and celery’ percussion to the band’s 2001 single, Receptacle For The Respectable after meeting the band at the NME Awards
– For the first time in two decades, and as part of the Furries’ reissue of their fifth album Rings Around The World, the sound of the former Beatle chewing vegetables to the beat is revealed in the original, isolated audio.
Super Furry Animals – Rings Around The World
20TH ANNIVERSARY ALBUM RE-ISSUE
Original album remastered + rare bonus tracks
2 x LP, Single CD, 3 x CD & Digital 1 – Fri 3 September 2021
Digital 2 – Fri 24 September 2021
Pre-Orders: https://superfurry-animals.lnk.to/RATWPR

The isolated audio of Paul McCartney chewing carrots and celery has been released by Super Furry Animals to announce the 20-year anniversary reissue of their ‘maximalist’, fifth studio album, Rings Around The World, newly presented on 180g gatefold, double vinyl, triple CD and double digital album in September. McCartney’s playful addition is released on its own for the very first time as one of 75 curiosities from the vaults, including unreleased outtakes, remixes, hidden sounds and demos appearing across the multi-format release.

A story that starts with a chance encounter at the NME Awards in 2000 and ends with McCartney’s enthusiastic chewing being delivered by post and then woven into the production of the Furries’ single, Receptacle For The Respectable, the ex-Beatle’s contribution is just one of the wild bends in the road of the expansive, Millennium-era, classic alt-pop album’s remarkable story.

Approached by artificially emboldened Furries keys player, Cian Ciarán at the ceremony at the Mermaid Theatre, London, initially to convince McCartney to let the band loose to remix The Beatles’ songs (a successful pitch as the Furries later received boxes of Beatles master tapes to contribute heavily to the Liverpool Sound Collage), McCartney agreed to appear on the band’s upcoming album. Within weeks, McCartney had sent a tape of just what the band had requested. Having previously ‘played’ the celery on Beach Boys’ 1967 track Vegetables, McCartney took the chance to revive his penchant for percussion with roots.

Ciarán says of the surreal addition to the Mercury Prize-nominated album: “He was going to come to the studio and then decided not to for some reason. So, we sent him stereo backing tracks so he could keep time, then he sent the tape back with a message that started with a really dodgy Welsh accent. Then he goes ‘I hope you like it’ – the next thing you know you just hear this chewing sound!”

In addition to McCartney’s appearance as carrot and celery cruncher-in-chief on Receptacle For The Respectable, Super Furry Animals added one more hero to the list of album credits as Velvet Underground’s John Cale took up the piano on Presidential Suite.

So vast is the BMG reissue of Rings Around The World that the digital version will be split over two, separate release dates.  All physical versions and the first digital instalment will be released on Fri 3 September 2021, with a second digital collection being made available three weeks later on Fri 24 September 2021.

Notably the first ever studio album to be produced in 5.1 Surround Sound, as a visual album and released on DVD allowing Playstation gamers to effortlessly switch to listening to the album, Super Furry Animals tested both the tolerances of modern technology and the purse strings of their record label at the time, Sony/Epic. Hiring four-time Grammy Award-winning, Run DMC and Public Enemy Producer, Chris Shaw and heading for a string of high-spec, residential studios, the band set out to reach for their furthest and wildest musical ambitions.

The Rings Around The World adventure is notable for being central to the Furries’ American odyssey. They, Shaw and engineer Eric Tew completed the estimated, final third of the record at Bearsville Studios on the lip of Woodstock, New York State, sessions that began after the band were left at the roadside by an out-of-patience, conservative husband and wife driving team, following a nine-date club tour from Hoboken to Boston. The following weeks featured baby bears, fireflies and paranoid, Blair Witch Project-reminiscent forest walks.

The widespread, positive response to the record after release on Mon 23 July 2001, which also included the sunlit, countrified splendour of Run! Christian, Run! and third single, It’s Not The End Of The World, not only gained the band more ground and bigger shows in the US, but a 2001 Mercury Prize-nomination, putting the band onstage for the awards party on a notable Tue 11 September 2001. The band returned to the States in 2002 for two, coast-to-coast US Tours following the critical and commercial success of the album across the Atlantic.

With updated packaging featuring original artwork and sleeve notes by music journalist, Keith Cameron, the announced track listing for the 2021 remastered release of Super Furry Animals’ Rings Around The World is as follows:

COLD HART
ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM
EVERY DAY IS A DAY
OUT AUGUST 27

SHARES NEW TRACK
“WILD WILD WEST”

Alt-rapper Cold Hart has just announced his forthcoming sophomore album Every Day Is A Day out August 27 via Epitaph Records. Every Day is A Day is the follow-up to his 2019 his full-length debut studio album Good Morning Cruel World.

Today, Cold Hart shares “Wild Wild West,” which finds him revisiting his hometown of Long Beach, recalling days spent speeding down the freeway with his friends grabbing burgers, and taking in the sights of the shoreline and palm trees.

Check it out HERE.

As a co-founder of the seminal emo rap collective GothBoiClique (Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Lil Peep, Horse Head, Døves, JPDreamthug, Lil Tracy, Mackned, YAWNS, and fish narc), Cold Hart has consistently been on the cutting edge of alternative hip-hop and rock since 2013 as a vocalist, songwriter, and producer. By pairing components of rap with seemingly unrelated genres like emo, gothic rock, and even country, Cold Hart has become an innovator of genre-defying music.

Working with longtime collaborator YAWNS, who co-produced most of the record, Cold Hart takes his signature sound to new heights bringing his adept songwriting skills into sharper focus and expanding his palette of sonic touchstones. He wrote the album over the course of the pandemic after moving to Long Island with his wife and newborn daughter, and recorded it during the particularly dreary winter. Cold Hart weaves the consequences of these shifts, whether it be coming to terms with fatherhood, learning how to drive on icy suburban roads covered in snow, or staying present through painful experiences, into the thematic patchwork of the album.

Pictured: Left - Katz, Right - Fractures Download Hi-Res Image Today, Melbourne-based songwriter and producer Katz shares 'Forward' - the latest single from his forthcoming second EP, due August 13 via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records. The oscillating synths and bright, futuristic sounds of ‘Forward’ feature the vocals of well-loved Melbourne artist Fractures, whose pristine delivery provides a point of contrast to the syncopated chord stabs, chopped vocals samples, and break-style beat of Katz’s instrumental. As ‘Forward’ continues to build around its spiralling synths, the synchronicity between Katz’s production and Fractures’s vocals grows into a genuinely lovely moment of cinematic, emotionally-driven indie pop. Fractures says: “The track had a lightness that guided the melody lines but we couldn’t resist putting a dark spin on the lyrics.” “‘Forward’ is full of constructive criticism - it’s about someone shirking their own ambitions and making excuses for unrealised potential”, adds Katz. “‘Forward’ is the second track Mark (Fractures) and I have written together. In contrast to the slow jam/neo-soul-tinged ‘Cipher’ (from the Waterfall EP), with ‘Forward’ we set out to make something a bit more airy and pop-focussed, but still a little dark, lyrically speaking. As a harmony-loving piano player, it was a lot of fun building thick vocal stacks and floating them over what is a relatively spare instrumental. We definitely laboured over those harmonies, making sure the right layer would cut through at the right time in order to meet the intention of a particular lyric.” The Only You EP is a bold step forward for Katz, marrying measured production with clever pop hooks, underpinned by his signature composition style. A confluence of emotional, vignette-driven storytelling, and Katz’s keen ear for original arrangements and instrumentation, the project is tastefully enhanced Katz's background in jazz. Only You further cements Katz’s unique place as a true polymath, unencumbered by the limitations of genre and continuing to explore new terrains within the electronic pop scene both at home and abroad. The Indiigo Child

Where are you currently based?
I am currently based in San Francisco, California.

How long have you been playing music?
For over 10 years.

What’s been happening recently?
Other then all the craziness going on in the world, I’ve been working on some creatives ideas. For me, it’s important to find ways to grow as a human and artistically.

Your new single ‘ I’m Yours” ft. Luma’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
All my music is inspired by emotion or events in my life. I’m yours is no different, and really was inspired by some transitional events in my life. From the production, to the lyrics, is inspired by those emotions.

How did you go about writing ‘ I’m Yours ‘?
Once I came up with melody, Luma provided some amazing lyrics to match the energy. It was very much a collective effort and exchange of emotions.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?
We collaborated virtually in 2020. I recorded, mixed and produced the track entirely, in my studio in San Francisco. Luma sent some amazing vocal ideas, which I edited and arranged. The track was mastered by Kevin Grainger at Wired Master Studios in the U.K.
How did the collab with Luma come about?
Once I had the idea for “I’m Your, I started searching for singers on Social Media. I found Luma and reached out to Luma’s manager and we got right to work.

How was it working with Luma?
Although, we only worked virtually, it was still a fun creative experience. Luma really understands the production process and that made it very easy to work with her.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Recently, I’ve been listening to Channel Tres, Polo & Pan, Larry June, Cannons and seriously been hooked on the sonics of Blood Cultures.

What do you like to do away from music?
As you can tell by the art on my projects, I’m very much into writing Comic books and Anime. I’m also a firm believer that health is wealth. With all the different micro climates in SF, I spend a lot of time either hiking or going to the beach on my motorcycle. Love the energy and inspiration SF provides.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?
Well we definitely have another single and full EP planned for release. I might tease some of my new comic book towards the end of the year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I’ve been on a plant based diet for about 4 years, and I love this spot called Cybelles Front Room. They serve plant based Italian food and my fav spot to hang out in the Marina. All in SF.

Where are you currently based?
Vancouver, Canada. On the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples–xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

How did you first start playing music?
I started teaching myself guitar when I left home at 17. I stole a guitar from my brother. He found out and helped me buy my own.

Your new single Drive is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I wrote it with my friend Van Darien. We are from very different worlds but we have good writing chemistry. I’d been listening to a lot of Roy Orbison which I think shows, and Van has a really solid country background.. I think the combination brought us to this kinda throwback rhythm and blues vibe.

How did you go about writing Drive?
Van had the “dri-ive” hook already and she was playing it over and over while I stared into the coffee she had just made for me. I asked Van, “where is she driving?”, and it unfolded from there.  I wrote about it recently on my own blog – it was a memorable write.

‘Drive’ is the 2nd of three singles that you are releasing for the moment, is there a relationship between your single ‘Sirens’ that was released in May and the final single ‘No Fun’ that’s coming out on July 30th?
I didn’t realize it when I was picking songs to release, but they’re each set in a different one of my three kinda hometowns: Murchison, Nashville, and Vancouver. Looking at it now, there’s a nice arc to that! Reflects how far I’ve come, both literally, and more figuratively. I think Sirens is very nostalgic, written when I was coming to terms with the idea of never going home again. And No Fun is pretty much a love letter to Vancouver.

Where did you record the 3 singles and who with?
My roommate in Nashville, John Little, had a small studio, and we pulled together the session there in less than a day. I was describing the kind of players I wanted to bring in and he came up with the Jons (Radford and Estes – drums and bass), Dan Knobler on guitar who also ended up mixing the songs, and Ryan Brewer on keys, who I had known back in Melbourne. Listening back to what we had recorded, Jon Estes and I were talking about tambourine which of course led to funk brother Jack Ashford, and Jon said he was in Memphis now, just down the road. I reached out to Jack and later that night he called me. The next morning I drove to Memphis and recorded Jack at Ardent Studios. Jody Stephen’s from Big Star runs Ardent now, and he set up the session for us. I recorded all the vocals and some guitars in my studio here in Vancouver.

What do you like to do away from music?
Um… being in nature. In Australia it was the ocean, but here it’s the mountains. Now I hike every morning at sunrise. And skiing. I never saw snow before I came to Canada, but my friend gave me their old skis last year, so I begged and borrowed the other stuff I needed, got a cheap pass to the local mountain, watched some youtube tutorials and taught myself to ski. I’m not good, but I’m good enough to enjoy it. I’ve pretty much spent the whole pandemic in the mountains in one way or another.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of audiobooks – right now it’s How to Change Your Mind. I’m also following the queer country explosion pretty close, it feels like a magical time. And lots of radio – WWOZ from New Orleans, WXNA in Nashville, and of course Triple R and PBS in Melbourne. Classic hits radio in Canada blows my mind all the time. I hear all these songs that never made it to Australia but were huge here.

I also use an app that lets you pick a country and decade, and it plays you a mix of hits from there and then – I’m stuck on 70s Eastern Europe. And my kid is really into 50s and 60s novelty songs (Lou Monte, Louis Prima, etc). So yeah, Pepino the Italian Mouse is on high rotation. I spend a lot of time searching for the best version of classic children’s songs.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?
Writing a song a week, and working on my next album. Pushing myself to write about unusual, very specific things, but make them relatable. Becoming a better bass player and producer.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Potato cakes but they don’t exist in Canada. So probably coffee. Best coffee in Vancouver is at this little window on the east side, called Iktsuarpok. Favourite place to hang out is the North Shore Mountains.

What is your name and role within Chutney? Cal Hughes, lead guitarist of Chutney.  Where are you currently based? I live in Burleigh Heads in our hometown of the Gold Coast, QLD.  How did you first start playing music and how did Chutney form? I began playing music from a very young age, playing cello, trumpet and bass guitar within the different classical and jazz bands in primary/ high school - I began teaching myself guitar when I was twelve so I could start making music that better reflected my personal tastes, and formed Chutney with Matt & Pat in mid-2019 after playing in a variety of different bands throughout our early twenties. Matt and I were playing in another local GC band Hot Coffee when Matt began writing a collection of rock songs that didn’t quite fit the electronic/hip-hop sound that Hot Coffee was known for, and I was very keen to form a new group that featured myself on guitar and matched the guitar-driven indie rock that the two of us primarily listened to - we quickly recruited Pat into the mix and began to write Matt’s songs into full band arrangements when we realised we had something special brewing. Andy was added as the final piece of the puzzle on drums and it’s been full speed ahead since then.  What's been happening recently? Working hard on new releases! As consumers of music ourselves we understand how hungry the public is for new music and we have been focussing on finding the line between quality over quantity - providing artistically consistent music while still keeping the momentum rolling from release to release. With this in mind, we are planning for two further releases by the end of the year, as well as maintaining our live performance output with a number of significant headline and support slots over the coming months.   Your latest single 'Talk' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? The sound of this track is what we consider the quintessential “Chutney” sound - riffy, bass-driven verses transitioning into a layered guitar-led breakdown, and culminating with a euphoric and atmospheric chorus with soaring, singalong vocals. In terms of the vocal approach, Matt opted for hip-hop laced verses to match the high energy feel, before kicking into the harmony-laden melodies of the pre-chorus and choruses.  In terms of the lyrical content, Talk is about looking out for your mates when they’re having a hard time - about how everyone has struggles from time to time, and how you are so much more important than you may ever realise. It is a song about mental health and the importance of leaning on those close to you in times of need. We wanted to create an uplifting, euphoric song that tackles sensitive subject matters while providing a positive ending - your mates will always be there for you, and having that talk is the first step to making a positive change. How did you go about writing Talk? The song began with Pat writing the bass riff that is featured heavily throughout the song, and Matt writing out the chordal arrangement and vocal melodies on his acoustic guitar with this riff in mind. The track then fell into my lap to build out the song in terms of forming a fully-fledged band arrangement, and I added a number of guitar elements which took the song from the hip-hoppy Gorillaz feel that the original demo takes on into more of that guitar-driven Chutney sound. Andy then provided the rhythmic energy that makes the track so dynamic, adding in a diverse drum part with multiple feel changes that gives the song its motor.   Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? The track was recorded at Lovestreet Studios on the Gold Coast and produced by our longtime collaborator Scotty French, whom we view as such a valuable contributor to our sound and output to date. Mastering was handled by Matt Bartlem who did an unbelievable job at making the track sound exactly as we wanted it, giving it a huge and raw sound while still maintaining the polish.  How did you approach the recording process? The recording process for this track was quite seamless, which was surprising as we had only written the song about a month prior to recording - generally with our previous recordings we’ve had the song in the tank for months and months before getting into the studio and laying it down, but with Talk we knew from the moment we wrote it that it was going to be the next single. I have been guilty in the past of entering the studio with guitar solos and lead lines not yet written and improvising my parts while the recording tape is running, but for Talk we ensured that all of our parts were written prior to entering the studio, and it made a drastic difference in terms of efficiency and ultimately, quality.  What or who inspired the concept for the music video? The concept for the music video was championed by Andy who took on the role of co-director as well as writer for the clip. The story of Matt waking in an unfamiliar location after a big night out and navigating his way throughout the day is not dissimilar to some of the situations that all four of us in the band have found ourselves in following our many wild nights together, and we wanted to represent our hometown of the Gold Coast with the locations used throughout the clip.  The clip opens with Matt waking up on the beach at sunrise after a big night out, and continues to follow him as he navigates the day without a cent to his name and one goal: get to the gig. Showing that even with a rough start, you can still make a day your own with the right attitude.  Where and when did you film? The video was filmed over the course of one day in May and featured a number of locally-loved GC locations such as Alfred’s Apartment and Seven & One Studios in Mermaid Beach, and Mo’s Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh Heads.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the video? The clip was filmed, directed and edited by Nick Stevens of Fastback Studios and he was incredible in terms of his creativity, professionalism and ease to work with. The bulk of the performing within the clip was placed upon Matt, and as he is naturally very comfortable in front of the camera everything moved along smoothly. We also recruited the services of a number of our friends to take part in the video as extras, and they were all so helpful and generous with their time - we are forever grateful to everyone who contributes their time and energy whenever required.   Please tell us about any upcoming live shows. We just played a headline sold out capacity crowd at Burleigh Bazaar for our single launch last Saturday which was amazing, and have a number of exciting support slots upcoming, including:  Sat 24th July: Nightquarter (Sunshine Coast) supporting Kingswood Thurs 5th August: Wooly Mammoth (Brisbane) supporting Vanilla Gorilla We are also booked for two very exciting festivals; firstly, we are headlining the Brisbane Indie Winter Project at The Zoo on 13th August, and later in the year we are very excited to be playing as a part of the Gold Coast’s Springtime Festival alongside heavy hitters such as Ball Park Music, Ruel, Hermitude and Sycco in September.  Who are you listening to at the moment? I personally have been listening at length to Puma Blue’s ‘A Late Night Special’ live album, Arlo Parks and Big Red Machine’s new releases, and local Aussie’s Eliza & The Delusionals and Eluera.  What do you like to do away from music? I love to watch and play sport with my mates, drink beers and enjoy the Gold Coast sunshine.  What's planned for the remainder of 2021? We will be playing a number of exciting support shows as previously mentioned, as well as getting our first taste of big festival slots and putting together a few more big headline shows to compliment our upcoming two releases which we’ve scheduled to drop before the end of the year.  Favourite food and place to hangout? I’m a sucker for a steak sandwich and schooner at my local Burleigh Hotel or Nobby’s Beach Surf Club, and the yakitori and ramen at Iku in Burleigh is unbeatable.  Spotify Instagram Facebook

What is your name and role within Chutney?

Cal Hughes, lead guitarist of Chutney.

Where are you currently based?

I live in Burleigh Heads in our hometown of the Gold Coast, QLD.

How did you first start playing music and how did Chutney form?

I began playing music from a very young age, playing cello, trumpet and bass guitar within the different classical and jazz bands in primary/ high school – I began teaching myself guitar when I was twelve so I could start making music that better reflected my personal tastes, and formed Chutney with Matt & Pat in mid-2019 after playing in a variety of different bands throughout our early twenties. Matt and I were playing in another local GC band Hot Coffee when Matt began writing a collection of rock songs that didn’t quite fit the electronic/hip-hop sound that Hot Coffee was known for, and I was very keen to form a new group that featured myself on guitar and matched the guitar-driven indie rock that the two of us primarily listened to – we quickly recruited Pat into the mix and began to write Matt’s songs into full band arrangements when we realised we had something special brewing. Andy was added as the final piece of the puzzle on drums and it’s been full speed ahead since then.

What’s been happening recently?

Working hard on new releases! As consumers of music ourselves we understand how hungry the public is for new music and we have been focussing on finding the line between quality over quantity – providing artistically consistent music while still keeping the momentum rolling from release to release. With this in mind, we are planning for two further releases by the end of the year, as well as maintaining our live performance output with a number of significant headline and support slots over the coming months.

Your latest single ‘Talk’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound of this track is what we consider the quintessential “Chutney” sound – riffy, bass-driven verses transitioning into a layered guitar-led breakdown, and culminating with a euphoric and atmospheric chorus with soaring, singalong vocals. In terms of the vocal approach, Matt opted for hip-hop laced verses to match the high energy feel, before kicking into the harmony-laden melodies of the pre-chorus and choruses.

In terms of the lyrical content, Talk is about looking out for your mates when they’re having a hard time – about how everyone has struggles from time to time, and how you are so much more important than you may ever realise. It is a song about mental health and the importance of leaning on those close to you in times of need. We wanted to create an uplifting, euphoric song that tackles sensitive subject matters while providing a positive ending – your mates will always be there for you, and having that talk is the first step to making a positive change.

The recording process for this track was quite seamless, which was surprising as we had only written the song about a month prior to recording – generally with our previous recordings we’ve had the song in the tank for months and months before getting into the studio and laying it down, but with Talk we knew from the moment we wrote it that it was going to be the next single.

We also recruited the services of a number of our friends to take part in the video as extras, and they were all so helpful and generous with their time – we are forever grateful to everyone who contributes their time and energy whenever required.

Please tell us about any upcoming live shows.

We just played a headline sold out capacity crowd at Burleigh Bazaar for our single launch last Saturday which was amazing, and have a number of exciting support slots upcoming, including:

  • Sat 24th July: Nightquarter (Sunshine Coast) supporting Kingswood
  • Thurs 5th August: Wooly Mammoth (Brisbane) supporting Vanilla Gorilla

We are also booked for two very exciting festivals; firstly, we are headlining the Brisbane Indie Winter Project at The Zoo on 13th August, and later in the year we are very excited to be playing as a part of the Gold Coast’s Springtime Festival alongside heavy hitters such as Ball Park Music, Ruel, Hermitude and Sycco in September.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

We will be playing a number of exciting support shows as previously mentioned, as well as getting our first taste of big festival slots and putting together a few more big headline shows to compliment our upcoming two releases which we’ve scheduled to drop before the end of the year.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

I’m a sucker for a steak sandwich and schooner at my local Burleigh Hotel or Nobby’s Beach Surf Club, and the yakitori and ramen at Iku in Burleigh is unbeatable.

Girlfriends and Boyfriends ‘Your Touch’ Premiere

by the partae July 20, 2021
written by the partae
From Vancouver, the band draws heavily on ‘80s UK indie, post-punk, and dance-pop. Embracing the propelling bass line, chiming rhythm, emotive lead, and uplifting vocal, they deliver a mix of hooky darkwave and proper Manchester jangle. Their sophomore LP “Fallacy of Fairness” was released 2021-01-27 on Spanish label ORACULO RECORDS (Boy Harsher, Agent Side Grinder).

KeAloha ‘2Lips’ Premiere

by the partae July 18, 2021
written by the partae

KeAloha has released her new single “2Lips” an indie folk-pop gem that reaches into the artistic influences of her heritage. Through her gifts as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer, KeAloha invites us into the moments of liberation that we find when we hold ourselves, eachother, and our complex intersections with tenderness, solidarity, and pride. KeAloha is a mixed race femme with chronic illness disability, whose blood carries legacies of Polynesian navigators and dancers, Lheidli trappers and medicine people, Irish farmer-settlers, and Chinese immigrants. Her music is a vessel for her to build relationships and understanding with the many identities she holds. A usual suspect in Vancouver’s RnB, Latinx, jazz, fusion, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul, Folk, and Pop scenes, KeAloha is committed to shaping her career and community through reciprocity for the people and music-cultures who inspire her.
