It’s not too often that a new artist comes along who can truly wear their heart on their sleeve and, with no pretence or facade, invite the audience to be a part of their unique world. Not afraid of vulnerability, or what might be, but just creating in the hope the music will inspire others to be proud of their own identities. Melbourne talent will hyde is an extraordinary example of such an artist, breaking out with his debut 6 track EP ‘with you in mind.’ in 2020, exploring themes of hurt, rejection, shame, love, and connection.

Now the young singer/songwriter/producer returns with an introspective coming of age single ‘boy.’, reflecting on the person he was just a few short years ago. With a lyrical approach beyond his years, the single is the first taste of a plethora of new music with the overarching message of forgiveness, and being kind to yourself. People make mistakes, will seems to say, and it’s all just part of a learning process in order to become a better human. Released with an official lyric video featuring old family footage, and highlighting the nostalgia with lofi VHS effects, ‘boy.’ is an endearing insight into Will’s ongoing journey of self-discovery.

Speaking to the personal change and growth that inspired the single, will reveals “the premise of the song is around accepting change as a good thing. Forgiving yourself for changing. When I was younger I was surrounded by people at that particular time who seemed to resist any attempts I made to change myself – from the way I looked, to the views I had on life. Maturing and growing up can be scary but embracing the human you are becoming makes it a lot easier to be at peace with.”

With an incredible wisdom and outlook on life for such a young artist, will shares “‘boy.’ is an ode to the inevitable fact that I will forever be changing and learning things as a human on this earth. So why not start accepting the person I am now in the present?”

Previously one half of producer duo SŸDE, will has already achieved some incredible success throughout his career to date having become a finalist of  triple j Unearthed in 2017 and going on to garner over 65 million streams as part of the project. Now as a solo artist, will hyde has quickly made a name for himself as a rising talent with an ever growing fan base across both Australia and the United States. With a multitude of tastemakers already singing his praises, including the likes of triple j Unearthed, Ones To Watch, Clash, NME, Wonderland, Pilerats, and Variance Mag, the road ahead is full of opportunity for this bright young artist.

will hyde’s new single ‘boy.’ is out now on Pack Records, with the official lyric video premiering at 12.30am AEST on Thurs 29th July – HERE.

HAWA Signs to 4AD and shares new single ‘Wake Up’

Praise for debut EP The One

“Intricate melodies and lush soundscapes that push the boundaries of popular rap and R&B…both tender and bold [with] uncommon grace” – Pitchfork

“Built on precision with an intricate soundscape and clever, boasting lyrics.” – W Magazine

“There’s more than enough versatility to guarantee HAWA’s place on any list of emerging stars.” – Highsnobiety

“HAWA embrace[s] leftfield hip hop and R&B, with a style that can be hard-hitting in one moment, and hazed-out, expressive, and romantic in the next.” – Dazed

“Her laidback genre-defying productions are set apart from the influx of lo-fi bulls**t thanks to a deeper understanding of musical elements — topped with all-too-relatable sing-rap verses about falling in love with girls over DM.” – i-D

“Subtly complex.” – Pigeons & Planes

“Magnetic ease.” – THEM.

“Stirring prowess.” – Office

“The genre-blurring artist taking rap in new directions.” – Dummy

Today, 4AD welcomes HAWA to its roster and reveals ‘Wake Up’ – out now via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

‘Wake Up’ marks a softer side to the genre-bending rapper/singer’s oeuvre, centring petty ruminations atop a beat by Cadenze (Jorja Smith, Burna Boy) and recorded at long-time collaborator Tony Seltzer’s NYC studio. The song follows a whirlwind period that saw HAWA close Telfar’s Pitti Uomo show, collaborate with British fashion house Burberry and featured in W Magazine’s latest music issue alongside Bad Bunny and Saweetie.

21-year-old New Yorker HAWA began her musical career as a pre-teen touring the world as one of the youngest-ever composers for the New York Philharmonic after immigrating from Berlin, where she was born to West African parents. HAWA’s insatiable creativity became stifled by the classical world’s limitations so she broke out, pivoting towards an authentic musical representation of herself. With songs that centre on the women she loves, those who she plays and those who play her, HAWA released her debut EP The One in 2020 via b4 (4AD’s sister label). HAWA is currently in the studio working on her debut album.

The artwork for ‘Wake Up’ is by Aya Brown, whose portraits of essential works earned widespread attention from New York Times and Vogue, and who co-starred in HAWA’s video for ‘Frick’ as her partner in crime.

EARLY EYES SHARE NEW SONGS “PARESTHESIA” & “REVEL BERRY”

Alt-indie pop band Early Eyes have just released a two-song single featuring “Paresthesia” & “Revel Berry.” The tracks were produced by Minneapolis locals Caleb Hinz (Hippo Campus, Samia) and Jake Luppen of Hippo Campus.

“Paresthesia” deals with the struggle to live up to societal standards and expectations while feeling as though one has lost their focus or direction. While “Revel Berry,” examines the emotional response pointing out the dichotomy of how art wants you to feel versus how you really do.

Jake Berglove explains, “As the climate collapses, global capitalism flattens our ability to build meaningful relationships, and people in positions of power sit idly waiting for the world to eat itself, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that as a band, we desire radical, revolutionary change. In fact, we need it. In order to see this change through, it is important that radical thinking goes beyond political discussion and becomes part of who we are.

‘Paresthesia’ and ‘Revel Berry’ were two of the first songs we wrote in the pits of the global pandemic. With the fine mist of capitalism condensing into a thick wall before us, we often found ourselves struggling to find meaning in making art behind that wall. We eventually realised that struggle was really becoming the music rather than purely informing it.

The state of the world is… pretty fucked. And these two songs are our attempt at pointing out the perpetual tightrope walk of being forced to participate in a system you despise in order to find success. Believing in communal thinking while being forced into the spotlight. Trying to find meaning in the mud while understanding that our individual meanings are not essential to change. Wanting to be sincere in a sea of subjugation.”

CHECK OUT “PARESTHESIA” & “REVEL BERRY” NOW

Early Eyes is Jake Berglove (vocals/guitar), Joe Villano (guitar), John O’Brien (guitar), Megan Mahoney (bass), and Sam Mathys (drums).

COMBO CHIMBITA SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SONG “TODOS SANTOS”

COMBO CHIMBITA SHARE VIDEO FOR NEW SONG “TODOS SANTOS”

by the partae July 28, 2021
written by the partae

“The song journeys through waves of raging urgency and placated tonal rhythms to create a world of their branded tropical futurism set a flame between lyrics and melody.” – Remezcla on “Mujer Jaguar”

“A fervent rallying cry for a new and better world” – Grimy Goods

“powerful music that speaks to a global counterculture movement” – SF Chronicle

Visionary Latinx artists Combo Chimbita have shared a powerful video for the new track “Todos Santos” today; directed by Iván Vernaza, watch it HERE.

Written in Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, the song is an homage to Yemaya, Mother of all Orishas in Yoruban tradition and guardian of the ocean representing home, creation and love.

“Todos Santos gave us an opportunity to situate our instruments in such a special place, out in the open near the ocean, with no people around, just listening to the wind and watching the birds,” said the band’s bassist Prince of Queens. “It generated a peaceful & tranquil energy, which reflects our capacity to heal and to forgive, something we often lose sight of through the hustle of day-to-day life.”

“The track’s hypnotic drumming was done in collaboration with Grammy-nominated percussionist Philbert Armenteros, a Cuban-born Babalawo and dear friend to Combo Chimbita who helped us perform this special homage to Yemaya,” added drummer Dilemastronauta.

This video is the second in a series of visuals accompanying new Combo Chimbita singles that follow a non-linear storyline. “Todos Santos” continues to follow the journey of the Colombian sisters seen in “Mujer Jaguar”, the band’s first new single + video that was released last month.

Filmed and produced in Cali, Colombia at the beginning of a national uprising that has seen violent state repression against its citizens, “Mujer Jaguar” follows a young woman whose fiery presence connects to resistance happening across Abya Yala. Watch the video for “Mujer Jaguar” HERE.

Lead singer Carolina Oliveras spoke to how recording “Todos Santos” was linked to “Mujer Jaguar”: “When we found an altar for Yemaya built by local fishermen between the ocean and the surrounding mountains, we knew this song would be healing, purifying, and hopeful. Those maternal characteristics are something we wanted to evoke through the single and its video, recognising that the young girl who roared in Mujer Jaguar, had a process of learning and unlearning, of guidance and autonomy, which she uses to confront life.”

“A futuristic Afro-Latinx Fantasy” – The Fader

“Lead vocalist Carolina Oliveros is an otherworldly presence over Afro Colombian rhythms meted out by guitar, bass and genre crossing drumming.” – NPR Latino

“Tradition may be the starting point for the band’s music, but innovation is an equally defining feature” – Bandcamp

Where are you currently based?

I’m born and raised in beautiful Calgary, Alberta (Canada)!

How did you first start playing music?

Music has been with me as long as I can remember. Ever since I could talk I would sing, and I’ve always loved writing poems and stories which became songs around the age of ten! My dad has always been a lover of music and sings as well, so it’s been in and around me forever!

What’s been happening recently?

I’m so happy to say my debut single “Blame it on Me” has been released! The song also has a music video to accompany it! All in all, I’ve been writing music constantly and working with incredible artists and producers who continuously challenge me to create a better song than the last, every single session. It’s been a blast!

You’ve just released your single ‘Blame It On Me’. What influenced the sound and songwriting?

I owe the sound to the incredible Jackson Willows, who I personally believe to be a total wizard. He has such a strong vision for the music he works on, much like myself when it comes to lyrics and storytelling and I think by working together we created something really special. Joseph of Mercury was also on deck and the three of us clicked in such a great way. I can’t imagine this song coming about with anybody else! Dan Kurtz also jumped in for insight and by the end of the songwriting and musical journey I was so happy and eager to release it!

How did you go about writing ‘Blame It On Me’?

Jackson Willows and I were actually jumping into another song for that session – we were circling back to a tune that we thought might have some potential but needed tweaking. However when we got in, both he and I felt it just wasn’t clicking. And personally, I believe that when creativity comes to a place where it needs to be dragged through the mud and forced, it’s no longer genuine. And that’s totally okay! So we decided to start a new song, and that was the start of Blame it on Me. We finished the majority of the song and that’s when Joseph jumped in to help wrap up and tie up loose ribbons and give the song his magic touch. When we decided this was going to be the first single, that’s when Dan Kurtz came in for a session to give his thoughts. After that, we were off to the races!

Where and when did you record/produce/master, and who with?

I recorded physically at OCL studios in Calgary with wonderful sound tech Josh Gwilliam, and through super cool technology, I had Jackson Willows and Joseph of Mercury in my ears listening to and directing the session. Jackson Willows produced, and Jay Dufour mixed. Finally, Alexis Psaroudakis mastered the song!

How did you approach the recording process?

Like I said, I was physically in Calgary recording, while my producer Jackson Willows and co-writer Joseph of Mercury were in Toronto. Technology is so advanced now that we were able to hear each other while I recorded in Calgary, and the two of them directed the session while Josh was there to facilitate and physically record. It was a super interesting experience!

Who are you listening to at the moment and who influences your sound?

I’ve been loving JP Saxe recently, as well as Conan Gray, Ruston Kelly and Lennon Stella. It’s hard to pin down who influences my sound as I feel I have a real unique vibe going that’s a combination of folk, pop, alternative and singer songwriter. I’m super inspired by Stevie Nicks though and older 70s 80s music and putting an organic and modern twist on it!

What do you like to do away from music?

I have all kinds of creative outlets like drawing, painting and writing – but I have a huge love and passion for photography and visual content creation. Being the creative director behind all of my music promotional images and aesthetic has been so fun, and doing that for other people is always so rewarding as well!

Does songwriting come easy?

For me personally, I would say yes! Of course everyone gets into creative ruts or phases of writer’s block, but in general I would say that writing has always come very naturally to me. Whether it’s poetry, story telling, essays or songwriting, stringing words together to create an image is one of my favourite things to do.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

I will be releasing a second single this Fall! And hopefully an EP will be coming shortly into the New Year. Stay tuned!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My favourite food has got to be potatoes. In any form. They’re just so versatile haha!

My favourite place to hangout is wherever my favourite people are. I’m very lucky to have found a group of friends who are so joyful, driven and loving. I am my best self wherever and whenever I’m with them.

Where are you currently based? I’m currently based on the forever buzzing King Street in Newtown, and have been for the past 5 years.  How did you first start playing music? I started singing when I was a kid. I was that annoying kid that performed at all the end-of-school celebrations and talent shows, hah. I started writing my own music when I was about 14, but back then I didn’t have anyone to write with so I’d hopelessly try to strum on my dad’s old and out of tune guitar (with no talent for it whatsoever).  Since then I’ve been in a number of different bands, mostly back in Sweden, but because of different priorities and moving locations, those projects didn’t last long.  I went solo about two-and-a-half years ago, which has been wonderful. I still collaborate a lot, but it’s been great to have the control to keep things going, taking me to where I am today. What's been happening recently? I’ve been working away on everything that compliments the music for the release of my debut EP, ‘Do You Remember That?’, and I’m so excited to share the images surrounding the EP.  I’ve also been working on sharpening the live set, adding live bass and drums. Previously it was just me and my collaborator Simon Brock on stage. It’s been so great to hear the music reach another level by adding two incredibly talented musicians to the mix.  Your debut EP 'Do You Remember That?' will be released on July 30, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Having removed so much of the regular joys this past year due to Covid, I’ve been reflecting on some of the most impactful moments in my life. It’s been a journey taking me from the highest highs to the lowest lows in the past 15 years. Because of this, I wanted the whole EP to be drenched in nostalgia. I hope that the listener can feel those big swings of joy, to anger, to desperation, to love.  How did you go about writing the EP? The writing of the EP started a year ago, almost to the day. Me and my partner and collaborator, Simon, went away for a long weekend to a super cute AirBnb in Wollombi. I tend to write best being out of the city, away from any distractions.  It would’ve been soon after the first Sydney lockdown had lifted and we were craving inspiration more than ever. I can clearly remember writing ‘Daughter’, track four on the EP. The song is an emotional and desperate call for normality, and the song unfolded late at night.   From that point we wrote additional songs from our home in Newtown, drawing inspiration from past life experiences.  Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with? All of the vocals are recorded in our little home studio (bedroom) and all the tracks are produced and mastered by an absolutely incredible and wonderful LA-based producer called HVTCH. We’ve built an amazing rapport with HVTCH, who did an incredible job elevating the songs with lush production. It’s been such a wonderful experience adding a third person to our little writing team and getting a fresh perspective on how the songs could sound.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the EP? It’s definitely been a double-edged sword sorting through my past experiences, some being so beautiful to revisit and others more painful. I think It’s allowed me to process things that I didn’t realise I was still struggling with.  It’s been so joyous to have HVTCH join us on the execution of this EP. I love that he’s added part of his sound to this record.  What does this EP mean to you? I am so excited to finally release my debut EP. It’s been a long time coming and I’m ready for the world to hear it! It’s such a personal selection of songs but I hope that people can still relate to the words. You’ll find anything from newfound love and self-affirmation to heartache and loss. I’m wearing my heart on my sleeve and it’s never felt so good.  Please tell us about any upcoming live shows: I will be doing an EP launch party with a full live band at the Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar on October 1st. If you’ve seen me live before, it’s nothing like it will be for this show! Because of Covid restrictions there’ll be limited tickets available so get in quick!   Who are you listening to at the moment? Right now I’m obsessed with Telenova, Mø and Oh My My. They are constantly on repeat.  What do you like to do away from music? I love photography and it’s what I do for a living outside of music. I tend to do all the concepts and lighting for my artworks and PR shots, and usually get help from a friend to shoot it. For the EP photoshoot I got Simon to shoot it (he knows very little about photography but I’m training him, hah). I also had help from epic creatives Olivia Waugh and Hamish McIntosh.  Other then that I love sunshine, wine and cheese! What's planned for the remainder of 2021? I wish I could say, but the future is very up in the air at the moment. What I will aim to do is play more live shows in, around, and outside of Sydney. I don’t have much hope of this happening this year, but as soon as possible I will get back to visit my family in Sweden. I don’t think I can stop writing about the longing I have for my family until I get to see them again. Favourite food and place to hangout? Cheese platter or pizza! I’m obsessed with the potato pizza at Bella Brutta or the Village Green at Epic (add chilli/chilli oil of course).  For hangouts I rarely leave Newtown/Enmore/Erskineville to be honest. You’ll find me at Camperdown Memorial Park, Jacoby’s, Queen Chow, Newtown Hotel, Martini,The Erko or on my balcony.  Please include links to socials and website. Toronto Based Rockers Harm & Ease Release New Single ‘Cut Me Loose’

by the partae July 27, 2021
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – Today Toronto-based rock band Harm & Ease, drops their killer new single “Cut Me Loose” via all streaming platforms and CosmoCat Records. The track is a stompin’ modern, blues rock anthem that showcases the band’s unique sound, duelling lead singers and puts the subjects of love and betrayal into play through a dramatic yet action-driven storyline.

The Harm & Ease story is an interesting one, from reaching an international following as they took over the South American rock scene to being discovered by Gianni Luminati of Multi-Platinum and JUNO Award-winning group Walk Off the Earth. Gianni was so impressed by the band that he went on to become their manager.

“I first saw the band in a small club in downtown Hamilton, ON in the summer of 2019. I was immediately enamoured by their playing and their ability to have the whole club up dancing and rockin out. After meeting the band after the show, I was very intrigued by their story and how the members from 3 different countries were brought together by friendship and a love for music, “said Gianni.

“For many years I had been looking for a band to work with that really inspired me and that had the same passion for music and art. I offered to represent the band as their manager, and they were very happy to oblige. We’ve been working hard over the pandemic on all facets of the Harm & Ease project and are ready to take the rock world by storm.”

The new single “Cut Me Loose” was recorded at Golden Carrot Studios in Burlington and produced and mixed by Juno and SOCAN award winning producer Tawgs Salter (Walk Off the Earth, Hunter Hayes, Washboard Union), and Tokyo Speirs (Walk Off the Earth, USS, Gabriela Bee). The track channels the Rock & Roll giants of the 60s and 70s and passes through a modern filter, creating a sound that comes across as fresh yet familiar and steeped in the roots of classic music and song writing.

“When we first wrote “Cut Me Loose” we went for a modern blues rock sound that seemed perfectly natural for us. We’ve all been through relationships in which our significant other treated us in a cold fashion. Whether that was our fault or not can be debated!  We posted a clip of us jamming this song in Trinity Bellwoods park in Toronto, and it got over 2 million views in just a couple of days. Juno award winning producer Tawgs Salter reached out to us soon after wanting to produce the song. We were so ecstatic to work with him, and we couldn’t be more excited to share “Cut Me Loose” with the world, said John Goodblood”

Originally founded in Burlington, Ontario in 2010, Harm & Ease are composed of Rylan Whalen (Vocals), Danny Lopez (Guitar), John Goodblood (Bass/Guitar), and Alex Hamnett (Drums). This line-up was formed in Buenos Aires Argentina after several reiterations revolving around Rylan Whalen, and Danny Lopez, the addition of John Goodblood and Alex Hamnett proved proficient in rounding out an already brilliant basis.

The band recorded and debuted their first two albums “Wonderful Changes” and “Black Magic Gold” in the bustling, artist hub of Buenos Aires before relocating their home base to Toronto, Canada. They also recently recorded a single with Grammy award-winning producer Joe Cicarelli (Elton John, The Foo Fighters, Morrissey, The Raconteurs) entitled “Nothing More Than Love”.

CHARLOTTE ROSSE WILL RELEASE ‘HALLUCINATE’ ON JULY 16 TAKEN FROM HER UPCOMING ACOUSTIC EP

CHARLOTTE ROSSE RELEASES ‘HALLUCINATE’ TAKEN FROM HER UPCOMING ACOUSTIC EP

by the partae July 27, 2021
written by the partae

Rising singer songwriter Charlotte Rosse releases her stunning take on Dua Lipa’s ‘Hallucinate’. The song will feature on Charlotte’s upcoming EP, a collection of acoustic and stripped back covers, plus her own original song ‘Raise A Toast’.

Giving the ‘Hallucinate’ a complete overhaul, Charlotte strips away the pacey electronic beats of the original, in favour of a soulful style using orchestral instruments, making way for her spectacular vocals.

Charlotte said: “While choosing songs for my acoustic EP I wanted to pick one song that everyone knows and is currently on the radio with a potential to be rearranged in an unexpected way. I decided to take on the challenge of making a soulful track out of Dua Lipa’s dance style Hallucinate. While creating this reimagined version I was inspired by 90’s pop and soul of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I adapted this song to the way I sing and we kept it raw by having live piano, string quartet, bass and percussion instruments.”

Charlotte Rosse burst onto the scene earlier this year with her song ‘Raise A Toast’. The dramatic pop song was the perfect introduction to Charlotte’s emotional world; her classical influences fused into a rousing power-pop ballad. The release caught the attention of tastemakers including Wonderland and Notion Magazine.

Operatically trained, Charlotte’s dramatic, grandstanding voice is a lightning rod of power and control.  She was discovered at the age of eight, winning a national choral singing contest in her native Poland, and going on to study opera at Academy of Music in Lodz. Suffering mental abuse from her teacher, she fled to London and worked as a receptionist while enduring many of the traumers the city can present to a young woman, she realised that contemporary music is where her real passion lies.

Now based between London and Monaco, Charlotte’s life is only one breakthrough song away from being a fairytale, with all the dark moments they involve. This is reflected in her music, as unique as you’d hope from someone who has chosen to tell her story via pop rather than get caught up being an operatic prima donna, as fate seemingly had decreed.

‘Hallucinate’ will feature on an upcoming EP, with further details to be announced soon.

‘Hallucinate’ is released out now!

GEORGIA MAQ TEAMS UP WITH ALICE IVY ON EXHILARATING JAM ‘SOMEONE STRANGER’

ACCLAIM FOR GEORGIA MAQ

“Hooks that’ll rattle around in your head for days”
triple j

“Where McDonald loosens her reservations and surrenders to the full impact of her voice,
the spark she’s always nurtured shines through”

Pitchfork

“On Pleaser she gets to use that voice against an entirely different backdrop
than the incisive emo-rock of her main band”

Stereogum

“Maq sounds as powerful as she’s ever been on Pleaser”
The FADER

Naarm / Melbourne’s Georgia Maq and Alice Ivy today share their collaborative single, ‘Someone Stranger‘, a natural coming together for two of Australia’s most prominent and tireless advocates for non-male representation in the conventionally male dominated spaces of punk and electronic music, respectively. Premiered via triple j‘s Drive program, LISTEN HERE.

Since debuting with 2019’s Pleaser LP, Georgia Maq has chased a more genuine form of pop music in her solo career, a vision in the vein of that pioneered by the likes of Robyn, Charli XCX, Carly Rae Jepsen and others, that retains all of the glamour and universality but feels unburdened from capitalist underpinnings. Full of DIY electro-pop that mined evergreen themes of romantic, sexual and self-love, Maq’s solo debut was not so much a transformation as it was a revelation, opening up on her vulnerabilities and heartbreaks, finding strength in this self-exposure and revealing the multitudes to herself beyond the Camp Cope project.

If Pleaser was a left-of-field toe dip, ‘Someone Stranger‘ is a full, unencumbered immersion: the chrysalis. Linking with Alice Ivy, ‘Someone Stranger‘ continues the revelation of Georgia Maq, musing on loneliness, desire, the need for connection and the therapeutic potential of dancefloors, whilst proving once again her penchant for a surprise that rewards. Of the single, Maq shares: “Annika and I knew we wanted to make a song together so we made the time and in about three hours we had pretty much finished ‘Someone Stranger’. I write lyrics really quickly when I feel I have to and Annika creates amazing melodies so it just worked really well together. The song is very much open to interpretation, but personally it’s about purging romance through movement.”

For producer and songwriter Alice Ivy, ‘Someone Stranger‘ builds on the refined curatorial efforts of her recently released second LP, the Australian Music Prize-shortlisted Don’t Sleep, while tapping into the emotionally-charged elation of singles such as ‘Don’t Sleep (feat. imbi & BOI)‘ and ‘In My Mind (feat. Ecca Vandal)‘. Boasting collaborations with Odette, Montaigne, Ngaiire, Thelma Plum, Bertie Blackman and more, Don’t Sleep demonstrated Ivy’s adroit ability as a producer, collaborator and tastemaker in not only platforming new voices and artists but also uncovering new dimensions to artists thought to be well established entities, working to diversify the sound and look of the traditionally male-dominated studio space in the process. Ivy’s modus operandi of collaborating with a deliberating broad range of artists now leads her to working with Georgia Maq on ‘Someone Stranger‘, another thread in an abundant tapestry of underrepresented voices and stories that runs across her entire discography.

Alice Ivy says of the single: “I feel like Georgia and I have always been destined to write together, so I was super excited when we finally got the chance last year. I played her a little demo I had kicking around and she immediately started writing lyrics for it. I loved how fast-paced the whole experience was! I think we were both thinking, “Let’s make this a song we’d wanna hear in a club!”. Georgia’s voice is so incredible, it was cool just being able to just write a massive pop banga with her. Very excited to have this one out in the world!”

Ivy‘s production lends a big-room sheen and sense of scale to Maq‘s songwriting, with resounding four on the floor drums, sweeping chords, strummed acoustic guitar in the background and immense synth lines that rise from the bottom of the mix, reaching ever and ever higher towards a ceiling that, seemingly, doesn’t exist. “Touch my body, I feel something,” Maq soars as the chorus, barely able to contain itself for much longer, bursts forth from the restrained verses, her vocals sounding smoother, sleeker and more sure of themselves than ever, pushing further into rapturous euphoria. Later this year, Georgia Maq will be performing live at the Sydney Opera House as part of the city’s annual VIVID LIVE festival – stay tuned for the announcement of new show dates coming soon.

Last week, the track premiered as Annie Mac‘s Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1 and has already garnered significant praise from the New York Times, Pitchfork, The FADER, Paste, FLOOD, DIY, NME, Dork and locally, Double J, FBi Radio, SYN, Pilerats, Coup De Main, Purple Sneakers, Sniffers and more.

In this labyrinth, the camera is the Minotaur, but I’m the Matador so it’s game on. But like I said before, I can teleport.”

Spillage

by the partae July 27, 2021
written by the partae

What is your name and role within Spillage?

Tony de Pasquale and I’m the bass player

Where are you currently based?

Essentially Brisbane but Sam lives on the Goldie and Nathan on the Sunshine Coast. David’s in Brissie too.

What’s been happening recently?

Just finished recording the new album. It’s getting mixed now. We had a single launch (You Said No) a few weeks ago at the Greaser that went really well. We’ve got our 2nd single launch (Unawares) at King Lear’s Throne on the 14th of August.

How did the reunion after two decades of not playing together come about?

Asho (from Footstomp) suggested it to Sam one night and he asked all of us and we all jumped at it. There’s nothing like being in a practice room making noise with your mates.

Please tell us a little about your history as a band:

Well…..in a galaxy far far away………it feels like that sometimes.

We were a 3 piece back in the 90s. Sam and I are brothers so we grew up playing music a lot. (My first instrument was an accordion when I was 5!) Played a lot of gigs with a lot of different bands. The main venues back in Brisbane were The Zoo and The Orient, the Roxie, The Funkyard and Metropilis. We played pretty much every other week for a few years. We put an album out in 94 and it sold about 14 copies. We were big in Ballscratch, South Australia.

Your live shows are as tight as ever, was the chemistry right where you left off?

We were a bit rusty at first but it came together pretty quickly. It helps that we’re not super stoned all the time like the old days.

We asked Gorky (David Gaukrodger) to join. We always wanted to be a 4 piece with the extra guitar. We’d known each other for years and he fit right in.

Your single ‘Unawares’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

I think you’d have to say the influence for the sound came from one of our fave bands of the ages: Husker Du. The lyrics are about living in a drug fuelled fog and wondering why your life is such a shit sandwich. Then turning it around and really seeing that the world can be a beautiful place.

How did you go about writing the track?

Sam came in with the song and we all added our little sparkles. It just seemed to get better and better and when we recorded it, it really jumped out. It goes off when when we play live as well.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

We recorded with Jeff Lovejoy at Blackbox Studios and the mastering was done by Matt Gray at Matthew Gray Mastering

What can we expect from your upcoming album to be released in October?

A mixture of songs. Although our roots are rock/punk/grunge there’s a few different sounds emerging. A few of the tracks are from the old days but the majority are all this century.

How did the new grunge sound come about?

Similar to the old grunge but new and improved!! I think as you get a bit older and you listen to a whole lot of different music, your taste widens and you can draw from a wider sound palette. Our roots are still guitar based rock but we like to throw a few spanners in the works to make it exciting.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I can’t speak for the other boys but 2 bands I’m into at the moment are Badflower and Cleopatrick.

What do you like to do away from music?

I like to spend time with the fam. I’m a Dad so there’s always sport with the kids on the weekend. I coach my daughter’s Netball team and my son’s cricket team. I like to get out and see local bands and comedy when I can.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2021?

We’ll finish mixing the album, get that released and hopefully get a little tour going (Covid permitting).

Plus we’ve already got a bunch of songs for the 2nd album so we’ll keep working on them.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Being Italian I’m a big pizza fan. But a close 2nd is Vietnamese food. Fave hangout would have to be the praccy room with the crew. As far as clubs/bars go – Greaser Bar and the Jolly Roger in the Valley. Plus Blutes on a Sun arve.

“박혜진 Park Hye Jin’s second solo release demonstrates her confidence to create free from the confines of categorisation”
NME (4/5 “How can I” Review)

“[Hye Jin] filters [her] experiences into a dreamy, cosmopolitan style that touches on house, techno, and footwork without ever settling down”
Stereogum (“The 40 Best New Bands Of 2020”)

박혜진 Park Hye Jin has today released the second single from her highly anticipated debut album Before I Die. Following the wistful house of lead single ‘Let’s Sing Let’s Dance’, ‘Whatchu Doin Later’ sees Hye Jin switching between the sung chorus and verses rapped in her native Korean and highlights another side to an album that encapsulates the electronic, rap/hip-hop and downtempo sensibilities of this multifaceted artist.

Before I Die – set for release on September 10 on Ninja Tune – is entirely written, produced and performed by the South Korean-born and now LA-based producer, rapper, singer and DJ, and comes on the heels of a string of collaborations, working with the likes of Clams Casino & Take A Daytrip (‘Y DON’T U‘), Blood Orange (‘CALL ME (Freestyle)‘) and Nosaj Thing (‘CLOUDS‘), plus a remix from Galcher Lustwerk (‘Can you‘).

It follows the release of her hugely successful ‘How can I’ EP, with Hye Jin drawing widespread support from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Jezebel, FADER, DAZED, i-D, E!, Resident Advisor, Exclaim!, Hypebeast, Purple Sneakers, STACK Magazine and many more. She was additionally featured in numerous ‘Best Of 2020’ lists from Billboard, The Guardian, NYLON and others, included in the NME 100 list of ‘Essential emerging artists for 2021’ & V Mag‘s ‘Generation V’ series, and highlighted by British GQ and Stereogum as ‘One to Watch’. The EP’s lead single, ’Like this’ – hailed by Mixmag as one of the “best tracks of 2020” and featured on the FIFA 2021 soundtrack – was supported across BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music (where it was playlisted for multiple weeks) with plays from Annie Mac, Clara Amfo, Lauren Laverne, Phil Taggart and many more. In the US the track was #1 of ‘Top Electronic’ in the NACC Charts (North American College and Community Radio), and in the ‘Top 200’ overall, with further support from KEXP, KCRW, SiriusXMU and more.

Acclaimed Canadian Indie Auteur Brian Borcherdt Returns As Dusted With Dusted III

by the partae July 27, 2021
written by the partae

Toronto, ON – Dusted, the solo project helmed by singer/songwriter Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck, LIDS), will release its third album, appropriately titled Dusted III on July 23 via AWAL. The 11- track collection of minimal, acoustic-based gems took shape after Borcherdt discovered some unused demos on an old hard drive and felt drawn back into a creative mindset he hadn’t felt for many years.

After seeking some trusted advice on what approach to take with the material, Borcherdt chose to revisit the unadorned style of the first Dusted album, 2012’s Total Dust, and laid down the tracks for Dusted III over the course of three days at Toronto’s Palace Sound with engineer Chris Sandes. The results are often haunting, but not so much a reflection of the past year of pandemic lockdown as a reflection of where Borcherdt finds himself at this point in his life living back in his native Nova Scotia with his wife Anna Edwards and their daughter.

“As I listen to the finished album now I’m struck by how much of it is about letting go,” he says. “Not all the songs came from lost demos. The newest song, ‘Not Offering,’ opens the album  perfectly: ‘I have given up. I have given enough.’ It was in my head a lot as I was driving the rented moving truck back and forth from Toronto to Nova Scotia. It was all the lost friendships, the letdowns, the things that turned sour. It felt suddenly more relevant as I was moving our worldly possessions on those twenty-four hour drives, only taking breaks to sleep hunched over a cooler  with my dog next to me. Letting go is a hard thing to do. I should say instead that this record is really about learning what to hold on to.”

Brian Borcherdt has appeared in many musical guises since first establishing himself within the Halifax scene of the mid-1990s as frontperson for the metal band Burnt Black. A move to Toronto followed in the early 2000s, leading Borcherdt to join By Divine Right for four-year stint while simultaneously creating his solo project, The Remains Of Brian Borcherdt, and forming the internationally successful, Polaris Prize-shortlisted electro-experimental band Holy Fuck, whose most recent album Deleter was released at the beginning of 2020.

Dusted has served as a vehicle for more traditional songwriting for Borcherdt, although the sound still retains many of the experimental elements he’s become known for. Dusted III is a further stage in his musical evolution, offering a meditation on change and rebirth that all of us can relate to at this moment.

“The song’s lyrics which passionately drive this statement are complemented by Borcherdt’s smooth, dulcet vocals along with subtle synths and folk acoustic guitars that help convey an ora of sadness. Borcherdt wants to reflect on his past, but as he proceeds to do so Borcherdt is bothered by a plethora of dark imagery.” – Mxdwn (USA)

“The new collection of songs from Borchedt builds on his spacious odd-folk songs under the moniker and sees him continue to interpolate electronic drums and synths on top of his ghostly vocals, creating a foggy world that succinctly evokes his return to Canada’s east coast; the birthplace of Borcherdt and his decades-long musical career.” – Circuit Sweet (UK)

“Switching from his electronic sound , his new single “Little More Time” is a pensive folk rock song about moving into a new phase of life by leaving behind your “Party-Saurus Rex”.” – Dusty Organ (Canada)

“The song itself is a tribute. The lyrics are a eulogy. The video follows the duo on their last days together as they get drunk and watch an asteroid approaching.” – The Tinnitist (Canada)

ROYBOY REAPPEAR WITH NEW SINGLE ‘BUSY’

by the partae July 26, 2021
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR ROYBOY

“It’s clear that this Sydney producer might just be one to watch for the future”
Rolling Stone

“An edgy hip-hop jam with snappy bars and glitchy production”
NME

“We mightn’t now who tf ROY is, but we do know that we’re keen to
listen to this one over and over and over again”

triple j

ROYBOY, the anonymous Australian hip hop collective composed of poets, beatmakers and visual creators, today return with their new single ‘Busy‘. LISTEN HERE.

“Who is ROYBOY?” and “where did they come from?” is just some of the feverish questions that have followed ROYBOY since first appearing as winners of triple j‘s inaugural DIY Supergroup Competition last year. With no proper debut to their name and scant details of who – or what – was behind the project, their recontextualised snippets of Flume, Amy Shark and Tame Impala with ‘switchUP‘ was received with a frenzy of exhilarating fascination.

By their own definition, ROYBOY is amorphous, an autonomous entity that is completely independent and separate from its creators. Whomever’s voice has been recorded before being subsequently mutated; whoever’s tweaked the synth line to a high-pitched gnarl; whoever’s programmed the rattling drum track – the individual is not the point. ROYBOY is constantly in motion, expanding and contracting to take in everyone involved in the project. Rather than any set group of individuals, ROYBOY is guided and united by an energy, rendering themselves invisible on a personal level in order to find identity in the collective. This anonymity liberates ROYBOY from having to adhere to anyone else’s preconceptions, pushing against the set rules like a child who is constantly testing the boundaries of their own rebelliousness.

“It’s its own person, its own concept and character,” ROYBOY reveal, “with its own set of morals and we’re literally in the backseat,” allowing the creation to simply channel through them, as on ‘Bread‘, ‘Calamari‘ and ‘oursound‘. Now as their latest single ‘Busy‘ enters the fold, ROYBOY manifest themselves again to usher in the collective’s next chapter. Of the release, they share “We made Busy as a club anthem for the homebody. Sometimes the thought of going out with a bunch of half-friends doesn’t come close to locking down, making music, filling up your own bucket with ice and drinks, and being alone – and that’s what we’re celebrating in this song. The irony of the EDM soundscape contrasted by lyrics of being solitary is what we wanted to be at the forefront of the song, expressing the desire to “worship my sub speaker” and pleading “not to hit up my phone with any of your weekend demands.”

Whether online or in the studio, the process of ROYBOY is strictly internal and revolves around the chemistry and camaraderie pulsing through the collective, a fertile breeding ground of ideas and trust that decentres the individual self in service of collective vision. ‘Busy’ is sharp and vivacious, with a beat as commanding as it is addictive, fusing together the adjacent pop worlds of Billie Eilish with ZHU – as igniting on the bars as they are on the instrumentation. ROYBOY‘s sound is defined by the tone of their processed, effects-lathered vocals, an omnivorous melange of pitches and timbres that never seems to sit still, moving from shadowy murmurs to razor-sharp precision to boisterous frenzy and back again. ‘Busy‘s release brings ROYBOY into focus, as the collective usher in their position amongst the next legion of Australia’s trailblazing electronic producers. Stay tuned.

OTIUH release new single ‘Friends Like’

by the partae July 26, 2021
written by the partae
“Add these heroes to your local faves like Genesis Owusu, REMI. Same flavour, new package”
– Dave Ruby Howe, triple j

“The pairing of Cesare and Jahmeil have become one of our go-to artists for forward-thinking hip-hop in the last few years.”
– Pilerats

“Otiuh shake things up in their own music.”
– Declan Byrne, triple j

The Perth-based childhood mates Otiuh (pronounced Oh-tee-yah) are back again with their latest scorching single, ‘Friends Like’.

Packing a punch from the first line, Jahmeil Baker and Cesare Papa have crafted this candid track, sending an honest, fire-fuelled message to the crowds that thrive off judging others. “There’s a lot of people our age out there who don’t know how to have a good time. They’re insecure, which is fine. But they try and fix this feeling by putting others down. Whatever it takes to feel better without addressing their own issues,” Cesare explains. Although originally written by Jahmeil as an experimental lo-fi contrast to their energetic sound, the single was reworked by Cesare with a trap-influenced production to meet the bold intensity of the lyrics.

With an ever-expanding discography, the duo have developed their own unique, dynamic style with fierce flows and vibrant instrumentation, offering something fresh to Western Australia’s blossoming hip-hop space. Following their string of released singles this year, Otiuh have earned themselves airtime on triple j’s Home & Hosed with ‘Mamma Always Told Me’ and a coveted showcase on MTV and rage with their music video for ‘Pour It Up’, as well as love flowing from their hometown community broadcaster RTRFM. After a series of impassioned, high-energy live shows with their three-piece band, including a sold-out headline performance at beloved venue, The Bird, and a set at the annual WAMFest celebration, the duo have also landed themselves a nomination for WAM’s Hip Hop Act for 2021.

The pair are dedicated to continuously pushing the envelope of their sonic diversity, flexing their genre-fluidity and collaborating with local rising-stars such as Adrian Dzvuke, Mali Jo$e and Hyclass. With their third EP in the pipeline, scheduled to be released later this year, 2021 will be sure to see what the duo do best – searching for the next sounds in hip-hop and making it their own.

‘Friends Like’ is OUT NOW.
