PRAISE FOR MAPLE GLIDER

“Hell of a song and hell of a tone”
Tommy Faith, triple j Unearthed

“Glider’s airy vocals float beautifully throughout the song,
with Iansek’s signature slow-burning and evocative production making for a stunning listen”

NME

“A piece that tries to unravel the intricacies of a religious upbringing and a relationship,
both of which kept her from being her true self”

Bob Boilen (NPR)

“As Tradition quivers with its intimacy,
drawing from the same deeply personal chord of Julia Jacklin and Angie McMahon,
albeit with nuances and touches that make it distinct to herself”

Pilerats

Having announced her debut LP To Enjoy is the Only Thing, today Maple Glider shares the fourth cut from the album, the delicate ‘Baby Tiger‘, premiered by Matt Wilkinson on Apple Music 1 overnight. Listen + watch HERE.

Over unison, raindrop-weighted nylon string guitar and piano (reminiscent of Erik Satie’s ‘Trois Gymnopédies’), Maple Glider dwells in a mist of apathy, taking a faceless lover. Protectively watching over her in her listless state is Coriander the sharehouse cat, featured proudly in the music video below.

“Baby Tiger was written soon after I’d returned home from Brighton,” Tori shares. “I was really struggling with my mental health, but I was going out and kind of using dating as a distraction from dealing with it. It never really worked. I’d just end up feeling worse when I was alone. Coriander hates closed doors. She’ll always want to know what you’re doing on the other side. It kind of became comforting to hear her scratch at my door. It was something that felt constant and unwavering and regular at a time when I was a bit vacant. Her energy made me feel lighter.”

She continues, “I’m very detached from the ‘man’ I address in the song, but I beg for him to comfort me. Though I am feeling unwell, I am pretty certain that it is temporary. I know that “I’ll come back to me soon”. My housemate says she sees this as a kind of happy song because it features Coriander, and I really love that perspective, because even though I was in a bad place when I wrote it, there is an element of hopefulness.”

Maple Glider (aka Tori Zietsch) has connected easily and immediately with a world-wide fanbase. ‘As Tradition‘, ‘Good Thing‘ and ‘Swimming‘ have garnered international acclaim from Bob Boilen‘s All Songs Considered on NPR, Stereogum, Paste, PAPER Magazine, NME, Uproxx, American Songwriter, Dork, Consequence of Sound, Brooklyn Vegan, KUTX, Pilerats and many more. Locally, Maple Glider has been supported by playlist additions across Double J and triple j Unearthed, alongside community radio stations FBi Radio, Triple R, RTR FM, 2SER and Edge Radio.

Working with Pieater at home in Australia and Partisan Records for a world-wide release, including a first pressing of pearly green vinyl, the Naarm/Melbourne based singer-songwriter can already boast over 2.5 million streams across her first three singles, and has sold out her debut headline show within a week. Fans will receive a zine with all vinyl pre-orders, and can pick up a tie-dye tee with the LP logo up-titled to To “Fang It” is the Only Thing… a personal saying of Tori’s, inspiring one of her tattoos (see below). Stay tuned as Maple Glider readies to take flight with her debut album, To Enjoy is the Only Thing out June 25.

KATZ Releases new single 'Only You' Announces Only You EP, out August 13

KATZ Releases new single ‘Only You’ Announces Only You EP, out August 13

by the partae May 26, 2021
written by the partae

Today, Melbourne-based songwriter and producer Katz shares ‘Only You’ – the title track from his newly announced sophomore EP, due August 13 via Dot Dash / Remote Control Records.

Featuring vocalist Sophia Brown, ‘Only You’ intertwines see-sawing keys, 808s and a boom-bap rhythm with Brown’s mournful vocals. As Katz puts it, “I’m a sucker for sad pop, and always love writing songs that juxtapose melancholy lyrics against hopeful instrumental backdrops. From a lyrical perspective, Only You – both within the title track and across the whole EP – traverses a number of aspects of the human condition that many of us can relate to, from self doubt and wasted potential to love and gratitude.”

Listen to ‘Only You’ here.

Following the success of his 2019 single release ‘Back From Nothing’ (featuring JANEVA), the Only You EP carries a sense of thematic coherency across the its six tracks through a litany of impressive features from names such as Fractures and Charlie Lim, and collaborations with Gab Strum (of Japanese Wallpaper) and Simon Lam (of Kllo). Only You is a bold step forward for Katz, marrying measured production with clever pop hooks, underpinned by his signature composition style.

An adventurous and striking listen, the Only You EP is a confluence of emotional, vignette-driven storytelling and Katz’s keen ear for original arrangements and instrumentation, tastefully enhanced by his background in jazz. “I think my background in improvised music has given me the ability to come up with chord choices and harmonic sensibilities that might not be found in other pop music”, says Katz. “I always try to remain true to the things that make pop music what it is, but equally, allowing the influence of other genres to imbue a track can give it an emotional lift.”

Only You is a new beginning for Katz and sees the artist elegantly traversing a variety of genres to place him at the forefront of Australia’s electronic pop scene. The forthcoming EP’s release marks another milestone for the Melbourne Music Prize-nominated jazz pianist turned electronic artist, who has continued to rise since the release of his debut Waterfall EP in 2018. In the short time that has followed, Katz has received airplay on Triple J, widespread support from Spotify, with millions of streams and several placements on their New Music Friday playlist, as well as music video spots on MTV and Rage.

The release of his Only You EP is set to further cement Katz’s unique place as a true polymath, unencumbered by the limitations of genre and continuing to explore new terrains within the electronic pop scene both at home and abroad.

STEVE AOKI TEAMS UP WITH YVES V AND RYAN CARAVEO TO PAY TRIBUTE TO AVRIL LAVIGNE’S ‘COMPLICATED’

by the partae May 25, 2021
written by the partae

Steve Aoki, Yves V and Ryan Caraveo join forces to pay tribute to Avril Lavigne’s classic hit single ‘Complicated’.

Their modern makeover of ‘Complicated’ interpolates the famous earworm chorus, while adding a fresh set of introspective lyrics. With a crunchy electro pop soundscape and newly written verses, the trio revitalize Lavigne’s era-defining song.

WATCH: Steve Aoki & Yves V – ‘Complicated ft. Ryan Caraveo’
In 2002 ‘Complicated’ topped the ARIA Chart for 6 weeks, and the New Zealand Top 40 singles chart for 9 weeks. It is certified double platinum in Australia, and platinum in New Zealand. ‘Complicated’ was nominated for Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

Steve Aoki says, “My roots are in the punk scene, and that kind of music has always had a special place in my heart. So when Yves brought the idea to me to rework ‘Complicated’ by the ultimate pop punk queen, Avril Lavigne, I jumped on the opportunity. And the lyricism Ryan brought with his new verses only expands upon the truly classic hook.”

Yves V adds, “I was so excited to link up with Steve Aoki on this single. I’m a huge fan of pop music, and Avril as an artist, so to add our electronic spin alongside one of my favourite peers onto a track as classic as ‘Complicated,’ and bring it to audiences in 2021, felt amazing. I hope the fans enjoy it just as much as we did creating our production!”

And Ryan Caraveo adds, “Man, working with Steve Aoki is really a full circle moment for me. Back in 2013 I was just a kid at one of his shows – fast forward many years to a completely different life and all the sudden we’re working together and covering one of the biggest songs ever from the queen herself Avril Lavigne and it’s pretty surreal to be honest. I’ve always loved and been influenced by electronic music and cannot wait to hear this at the festival with the homies.”

‘Complicated’ is the next release from Steve Aoki in a long line of recent pop collaborations. He has recently released tracks with Backstreet Boys, BTS, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui, Migos, blink-182, and Daddy Yankee. Globally, Steve Aoki has over 3 billion streams. He has been nominated for 2 Grammy Awards.

‘Complicated’ sees Steve Aoki team up with DJ Yves V and alt hip-hop artist Ryan Caraveo. A resident DJ at Tomorrowland, Yves V has remixed a-list artists including Timbaland, Missy Elliot and Ginuwine.

Nicky Romero Partners with Visual Lab and Ethernity Chain For His First NFT Drop – “Behind The Mask”

by the partae May 25, 2021
written by the partae

In an exciting new partnership with Visual Lab and Ethernity Chain platform, Nicky Romero releases his first, highly anticipated collection of NFTs. The Protocol Recordings label boss and veteran electronic producer joins the likes of Pelé, Tony Hawk, Muhammad Ali, Fernando Tatis Jr., and their authenticated NFT releases on Ethernity Chain. From the sneak peek into the 3-tier collection, many will recognize the iconic mask, bringing a welcome hit of nostalgia to a brand new concept. To create it Nicky partnered with Visual Lab, a Dutch company which also created an authenticated NFT collection for Pelé, pioneered Nicky Romero‘s “Another World” 3D livestream concept last summer and is responsible for designing and programming all the visuals you could see during Nicky‘s performances around the world. Nicky Romero is continuously finding new ways to infiltrate growing markets as an artist, and the stunning visual art on “Behind The Mask” will not disappoint.

“Since the beginning of my career I’ve been experimenting with different types of visuals for my performances, as my goal always is to elevate to the next level the experience of each attendee. After the last year’s debut of my ‘Another World‘ 3D livestream concept, the next step was inevitable. ‘Behind The Mask‘ is our first NFT collection that symbolizes the energy that the fans from around the world been giving me over the past years. I have created it with my visual team – Visual Lab, that I’ve been working with closely since day 1. We are happy to team up with the premier NFT platform Ethernity Chain for the release of ‘Behind The Mask,’ which places us among the official NFT collections of the likes of Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Tony Hawk, and more.” – Nicky Romero

“We’ve been creating visuals for Nicky Romero‘s releases and performances since the very beginning of our company. We know that some of those animations became memorable not only for us, but also for the fans of Nicky Romero around the world. When working on ‘Behind The Mask‘ we wanted to capture this powerful feeling of thousands of people sharing mutual memories and experiences. It’s about unity and what connects us, one with another.” – Visual Lab

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve during these unprecedented times in the music industry. With the debut of his ultra-modern “Another World” live stream concept last summer and launch of Monocule alter-ego, Nicky Romero keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

Sterling Press

by the partae May 25, 2021
written by the partae

Having stormed onto the scene with their daring debut ‘Very Fun Times’, Sterling Press are a fresh four-piece who deliver a compelling brand of in-your-face indie with roots in Ska that also throws back to the brit-pop heyday. ‘Lots Of Noise’ is the latest offering from the group, which has been lauded by the Specials, Radio X and now, us! We had the pleasure of catching up with the band on all things music, school and golf.

Hey guys, can you introduce yourselves and what role you play in the band?

Not just instruments!

The band is made up of Marlon (bass/vocals) , Ed (guitar/vocals), Greg (guitar/vocals) and Lucien (drums). We all write the songs together so there isn’t one person that writes a song from start to finish. We all chip in along the way. It normally starts with ed and marlon in a shed together and then goes to greg who works his producer magic and makes the demos sound class before playing it as a band with lucien as well.

How did you all meet?

We all met in school. We were the kids that played music for all the school musicals and whatnot so we became friends through that stuff and eventually decided to make our own band and write our own music.

What is ‘Lot’s Of Noise’ about and can you explain what influenced the lyrics?

It’s just a story of a woman who works in a pub and dreams of something bigger. Felt like most people have been/are in a similar situation including ourselves so felt relevant to sing about.

What are your biggest highlights of your career so far?

Getting support from legends like Steve Lamacq has been fucking sick. We put so much work into each song so it’s class to see it appreciated by the top DJs. We started the band during lockdown so obviously we haven’t been able to do much but it’s still been a great few months.

Any big plans in the next few weeks and months?

Wanna gig as much as we can. Try to play throughout the summer. We have our own shows in July including a London sellout which is gonna be massive but hopefully we can get some support shows and festival slots to take us through to Winter where a headline tour may be on the horizon.

Finally, who is the best golfer? Referencing your instagram, of course:

Not gonna lie, that was the first time any of us had picked up a golf club. I’d say Greg had the most natural talent.

RELEASES NEW SINGLE
‘Y DON’T U (FEAT. CLAMS CASINO & TAKE A DAYTRIP)‘

OUT NOW ON NINJA TUNE

PRAISE FOR 박혜진 PARK HYE JIN

“a startling debut”
British Vogue (Feature)

“박혜진 Park Hye Jin’s second solo release demonstrates her confidence to create free from the confines of categorisation”
NME (4/5 “How can I” Review)

“[Hye Jin] filters [her] experiences into a dreamy, cosmopolitan style that touches on house, techno, and footwork without ever settling down”
Stereogum (“The 40 Best New Bands Of 2020”)

박혜진 Park Hye Jin teams up with Clams Casino (A$AP Rocky, Mac Miller, FKA Twigs) and Grammy-nominated NYC duo Take A Daytrip (Travis Scott & Kid Cudi, Lil Nas X) for ‘Y DON’T U‘, released today on Ninja Tune.

‘Y DON’T U’ sees Hye Jin contemplating heartbreak and rejection as she slips seamlessly between the half-spoken-half-sung vocals of the chorus’ central refrain – “why don’t you love me?” – and verses rapped in her native Korean, delivered over the track’s stuttering beat.

“This song had too many journeys before being released right now. It deserves to be listened to. I first recorded it when I lived in London. I remember when I was a little more innocent and pure. Hye Jin is more innocent when she falls into such a love; not anymore though I guess.” – 박혜진 Park Hye Jin

The release follows recent singles with Galcher Lustwerk, Nosaj Thing and Blood Orange – who added his own vocals to Hye Jin’s ‘CALL ME‘ in a collaboration praised by the New York Times for its “suspended, isolated, wondering” take on the song.

It also caps an incredible 12-months for the artist which saw her release her acclaimed How can I EP on Ninja Tune. A record that was met with strong support from the likes of Rolling Stone, Pitchfork (“25 Most Anticipated Albums of the Summer”), Jezebel, FADER, i-D, Resident Advisor and many more, and featured in numerous ‘Best Of’ 2020 lists from Billboard, The Guardian, NYLON and others. Hye Jin was also included in the NME 100 list of ‘Essential emerging artists for 2021’& V Mag‘s ‘Generation V’ series, with the likes of British GQ and Stereogum also highlighting her as ‘one to watch’. The EP’s lead single – ’Like this’ was also featured in the FIFA 2021 soundtrack, and saw heavy support across BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music, was #1 of ‘Top Electronic’ in the NACC Charts (North American College and Community Radio), and in the ‘Top 200’ overall, with further support across KEXP, KCRW, SiriusXMU and more.

박혜진 Park Hye Jin’s ‘Y DON’T U (feat. Clams Casino & Take A Daytrip)’ is out now on Ninja Tune.

NEW ALBUM SONGS OF LOSS AND SEPARATION OUT JULY 16

BAND SHARES VIDEO FOR NEW SONG THE BURDEN OF BELIEF

TIMES OF GRACE, featuring Adam Dutkiewicz and Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage, return after a 10-year hiatus with their second album Songs of Loss and Separation, out July 16 via the band’s own imprint label, Wicked Good Records, distributed by ADA Worldwide.

Pre-order it here, and check out the band’s newly-relaunched D2C webstore, with brand new merch and exclusive limited vinyl offerings, here.

The band has shared the video for the new song The Burden of Belief.
Watch the video, directed by Nick Hipa here:

Churning depths of plaintive sorrow, stark self-examination, and moving soundscapes unfold in Times of Grace, with flashes of cathartic power and an undercurrent of insistent urgency. It’s all a meditation on absence, grief, bewilderment, and rebirth — summoned with harrowing authenticity. The Burden of Belief, the opening track on Songs of Loss and Separation, is a dark and melodic slow burn that gives an epic sense of what’s to come.

“This song is the spark of the oncoming fire,” says Leach. “It foreshadows the journey of this album. This song is an unveiling of who we, Times of Grace, have become after all of these years. This is a testimony of falling apart, losing faith, letting go, and the desire to kill and purge the past. It is the unraveling, the catharsis and the rebirth. So it begins….”

“It almost feels strange finally releasing the songs on this record, especially this one,” says Dutkiewicz. “I started writing this song over 10 years ago, so it’s been around for quite some time. I really hope you guys dig it, and I hope we will get the opportunity to play it for you guys live someday. Thanks, everyone!”

The band’s debut album The Hymn of a Broken Man arrived in 2011, nearly a decade after Leach’s exit from Killswitch Engage, the pivotal New Wave of American Heavy Metal band the duo co-founded with friends in 1999. The first music from Times of Grace materialized during Dutkiewicz’s arduous recovery from near-crippling back surgery. A collection of songs the multi-instrumentalist and producer knew would suit his once and future bandmate. The first album earned acclaim from BBC Music, The Aquarian, and Rock Sound. It willfully upended expectations, with flourishes of shoegaze and ambiance in its songs.

Now, 10 years after Times of Grace first surfaced, the eagerly awaited follow-up arrives.

Comfortably stretched beyond the parameters of what came before, without sacrificing an ounce of integrity, Times of Grace weave between pensive, heavy, midtempo rock, riffs, and atmosphere. The pair’s vocal interplay makes for a rich, dense, and enthralling concoction, powering through various trips through dark nights of the soul and mind-expanding excursions into the wild. Songs of Loss and Separation benefits wildly from the powerhouse performance of ex-Envy On The Coast drummer Dan Gluszak, who toured behind the first album and is now an official member of the band.

The sprawling second album from Times of Grace, with a stunning album cover painted by John McCormack and album art layout by Tom Bejgrowicz, channels a dissonant, menacing, and unrelenting depression. Haunting romanticism and deep spiritual yearning collide in beautiful melancholy. It’s a diverse but singular statement, like the most beloved work of classic bands. Songs of Loss and Separation, insistent in its bluesiness, bleeds distortion and emotion, like a nerve, exposed.

Simply put, Times of Grace are a revelation.

Jonny Kosmo shares new single 'Last Call'; sophomore album Pastry out next Friday 4th of June
Music News

Jonny Kosmo shares new single ‘Last Call’; sophomore album Pastry out next Friday 4th of June

by the partae May 24, 2021
written by the partae

PEOPLE SAY:

“The manic jazz-leaning grooves, off-kilter synth confections, and fantastical visual components illustrate Kosmo’s peculiar and irresistible approach to pop songwriting.”
– New Commute

“Whatever your musical tastes are, I think it is safe to say that you will find space on your plate for Jonny Kosmo. His music comes from that part in all of us that wants to know our individuality and inner child. Jonny has found both, and made them partners.”
– Jammer Zine

“Jonny Kosmo has built a dedicated following fusing immaculately-produced 70’s-vintage funk/soul tunes with an at-times truly surreal visual sense that evokes contemporaries Unknown Mortal Orchestra, albeit with a seemingly more playful and innocent heart.”
– The Deli Magazine

LA-based multi-instrumentalist, lyricist and producer Jonny Kosmo returns with new track ‘Last Call’: a single lifted from his sophomore record Pastry, due Friday June 4 via Dinosaur City Records and Feeding Tube Records, and available to pre-order HERE.

Stream/download ‘Last Call’ HERE.

Borrowing from the metaphor of a closing kitchen, the transcendental new track tells the story of taking chances and walking through discomfort.

Of his inspiration behind the new single, Kosmo shares:

“Fear can often recruit me into feeling confused or even immobilised. The ‘what-ifs’ and ‘shoulds’ often creep and speak in wiley tongues. ‘Last Call’ is about not letting fear run the show. It’s about walking through discomfort. For me life is an adventure – I’d rather jump in the pool and have things not work out ot my expectations then never get wet at all.  This is something I always try to remind myself of.  I don’t want fear to take me around in its clown car full of crows!”

Folding on samples from Kosmo’s rich repertoire with billowy horns, a parlour piano and Kosmo’s soothing vocals, ‘Last Call’ evolved sonically as a result of what Kosmo calls “a handful of happy accidents”.

On the recording process, Kosmo says:

“This tune was composed mostly of samples from other songs I had recorded, which was a new process I tried out on this record. I like the idea of themes and pieces folding in on themselves. In this process, I have found there to be a lot of happy accidents – ideas I wouldn’t have initially considered appeared with the slip of a finger. I had been fooling with the idea of chances and their meaning ever since I saw Jim Carey do his commencement address at the 2014 MUM Graduation. This Youtube video heavily influenced the lyrics of this song.”

Jonny Kosmo ‘Last Call’ Packshot

‘Last Call’ is the third single from Kosmo’s sophomore album Pastry, and follows on from recent single/video ‘Fool’, which was added to Rage rotation and placed on a string of influential playlists including Apple Music’s ‘New Music Daily’, ‘Indie + Chill’, ‘Antidote’, ‘Always Sunday’ and ‘New in Indie’, and Spotify’s ‘Fresh Finds: The Wave’.

Honeyed in funk and R&B, and steeped in pop-strange composition, Pastry touches upon themes of community, spiritual metamorphosis, and inherent resiliency of spirit. These are spring-boarded by the records construction itself; songs often created from samples of others, continually folding in on itself. The pastiche speaks to the intention: the meta-narrative of personal and communal change. Pastry was recorded and mixed at Kosmo’s home studio Slimehouse as well as Record Studio 22 with Tomas Dolas (The Oh Sees/Mr. Elevator) and mastered by Alex Cooley. All of the album’s artwork was created by local Northeast Los Angeles muralist Rodolfo Kardona in celebration of community essence.

About Jonny Kosmo:

Los Angeles artist Jonny Kosmo can best be described as zaney pop, funk-strange-soul. Feel-good and bouncy on the surface, a grounded ear yields psychologically thematic landscapes drawn from a history of working in mental health, bearing witness to metamorphic change and story. Live performances are characterised by community stage presence, brass sections, melting harmony and occasional trampolines. Kosmo’s debut self-titled release Jonny Kosmo (2019) saw international releases on ChiChing Records (Taipei) and Slimer Records (Italy). Following, Kosmo toured supporting Jerry Paper, sharing the stage locally with such acts as Gary Wilson, Guerilla Toss, and Reggie Watts.

DUCKS LTD. RELEASE EXPANDED GET BLEAK EP REISSUE VIA CARPARK RECORDS WATCH VIDEO FOR BONUS TRACK ‘OBLIVION’

PRAISE FOR DUCKS LTD.

“Jangly indie-pop at its finest. An essential new artist”
NME

“Ducks Ltd. understand that dancing through misery is healthier than dancing around it. Their brand of lilting, throwback jangle-pop makes that seem like the easiest thing in the world to do”
Pitchfork

“Get Bleak offers a promising glimpse of great things to come; let’s hope for a quick follow-up”
Exclaim

“A perfect combination of contemporary modern indie rock à la
Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and classic jangle pop bands like Belle & Sebastian or
The Sundays, the four songs on Get Bleak is pure indie-pop bliss”

Toronto via Melbourne’s Ducks Ltd. (fka Ducks Unlimited) releases its expanded Get Bleak EP reissue via Carpark Records, and presents the video for new single ‘Oblivion‘. The bonus track that didn’t appear on the original version of Get Bleak brings the band’s characteristic restless bounce, thoughtful lyricism and penchant for orchestration, while exploring self-destructive desires. Listen + watch HERE.

Ducks Ltd. elaborates “Oblivion is about depressive states and manic states and the way that they’re in some ways expressions of the same drive toward the obliteration of consciousness that I feel sometimes, and that I think maybe most people feel sometimes. Some days nothing seems more appealing than being enveloped by the grey expanse of nothingness! There’s a reference in the chorus to a Rothko painting I really like called Untitled (Black on Grey). If you’re inclined to be charitable you might think of the chorus as a kind of exercise in ekphrasis, but if you are not you should just go look at the painting. It is really good and I think probably a very clear expression of the thing this song is about!”

The reissue of Get Bleak allows listeners to revisit the tracks from their EP and gives an exciting glimpse of what’s to come from the band. Ducks Ltd. are brimming with potential, bringing the same warmth to listeners as when unearthing an old fantasy; wistful and existential, but full of new gusts of inspiration and radiance.

Get Bleak EP is out now via Carpark Records, buy/stream it here.

KUNZITE Share Psychedelic New Single ‘FROSTY’

KUNZITE SHARE NEW SINGLE + VIDEO ‘FROSTY’

+ NEW ALBUM VISUALS OUT THIS WINTER VIA LOWLY. / WILDER

Today, KUNZITE share their psychedelic & electronic-fueled single ‘FROSTY‘, alongside the announcement of their new album VISUALS out this winter via Lowly. / Wilder Records. The project of New York-based Mike Stroud (RATATAT) and Hawaii & Oregon-based Agustin White, the new track follows its explosive instrumental buildup with an infectious and breezy groove, the soundtrack to a perfect sunset after a long hazy summer’s day. ‘FROSTY’ follows previous singles ‘JUPITER‘, ‘SATURN‘ and ‘NOVAS‘, inviting listeners on another journey around the cosmos.

The visual for ‘FROSTY’ was filmed in Venice Beach, CA, befitting the warm, sunny vibe of the track and features local female surfers and skaters including members from the all female-identifying crew GRLSWIRL. On the Priest Fontaine-directed visuals, White details; ”FROSTY’ always felt like it flowed with surfing and skating… It’s all about grabbing your board or wheels and just having fun. All of the athletes featured in the video were super supportive and encouraging of one another. You see their different skills on display throughout the video, including roller skaters who have made such a big comeback over the last few years yet, for Black Culture, it’s always been there. The roots of roller skating lie within the Black community and we wanted to honour that.’

The movements of KUNZITE’s Stroud and White have seen them orbiting around each other, occasionally crossing paths yet consistently admiring each other’s work. The pair traversed the globe separately with their different projects and personal adventures — Mike touring with his band Ratatat and Agustin on a spiritual journey exploring yoga, meditation and psychedelics — while looking to one day do something together. The formation of KUNZITE saw them finally able to merge their minds and mission, with a sound that blends psychedelia with electronic, beat-heavy production and live instrumentation.

Many of the new tracks started while at Agustin’s stripped back studio in Hawaii, inspired by the island vibes, and were finished at Mike’s barn studio in upstate New York. VISUALS features a variety of instrumentation found in their studios including acoustic, electric and lap steel guitars, organ, synthesizers and the charango. Look for more details on KUNZITE’s VISUALS soon.

KUNZITE VISUALS OUT WINTER 2021

Praise for KUNZITE

‘Surreal moments such as now are best soothed with energetic psychedelia, and KUNZITE has the interstellar inspiration your cooped-up cells crave.’
– Billboard

‘Another classic from KUNZITE, featuring the trademark songwriting style we first became accustomed to with Ratatat’
– Magnetic Magazine

‘A soaring, psychedelic jam’
– Dancing Astronaut

Praise for Cedric Burnside

“Cedric Burnside carries the mantle – the joy and the burdens and the history of the North Mississippi hill country blues, a style like no other in Southern Music” – The Bitter Southerner

“Grammy-nominated Blues musician Cedric Burnside remembers his roots” – NPR Weekend Edition

“The Big Bad Burnside Sound is back… and how!” – MOJO

“Cedric expands the sonic landscape in a way not too many other artists can do…while ushering the genre into a beautifully Black future.” – Ebony

“Hypnotic hill country…with live-wire playing.” – Rolling Stone

“Timely and timeless…showcases the best of what Cedric does” – Afropunk

“Cedric proudly carries the mantle of Mississippi hill country blues into the 21st century”
– Afropop Worldwide

GRAMMY-nominated musician Cedric Burnside has shared the cathartic opening track from his new album I Be Trying – out June 25 on Single Lock Records / Remote Control Records – today: an acoustic-driven reflection on recent times aptly titled ‘The World Can Be So Cold‘. As only a true Mississippi bluesman can, Burnside channels those acute experiences of pain, anger, frustration and hurt into an intimate, vulnerable and profound look into his inner life. Recorded at Memphis’ hallowed Royal Studios, Cedric draws from his years collaborating with his legendary grandfather RL Burnside while crafting a bold, contemporary Black American sound that serves as a masterclass in Mississippi Hill Country Blues from its greatest living practitioner.

Watch a behind-the-scenes clip of the recording of ‘The World Can Be So Cold‘ from Royal Studios HERE. Burnside previously shared ‘Step In‘ from the Boo Mitchell-produced record, which was met with much early excitement. Watch HERE.

I Be Trying marks Cedric‘s latest chapter in a career that began at age 13 with an unmatched musical education in his grandfather’s touring band. Now serving as the leading global ambassador for the Hill Country Blues, a genre at once African and American, southern and Mississippian – local and universal – the album also features musicians like North Mississippi All-Stars frontman Luther Dickinson, Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell and New Orleans drummer Reed Watson (John Paul White, etc). With a release on the artist-run Southern independent label Single Lock Records, the collection unmistakably charts a path forward for the Mississippi blues of a modern South.

Melbourne duo Skydeck return with new single ‘Dogshot’; announce sophomore album Coupon

by the partae May 22, 2021
written by the partae

PEOPLE SAY:

“[Eureka Moment] is one of the best Australian albums so far this year… The songs waver between prickly post-punk, washed-out New Wave and lo-fi outsider pop, courting kindred spirits in melodically enhanced weirdos old (Tall Dwarfs, The Fall) and new (The Native Cats, U-Bahn).”
– Doug Wallen via Weirdo Wasteland

“Hooks! hooks! hooks!”
– Declan Byrne via triple j

“Tinny pop informed by paranoid post-punk and inspired by the state of Australia today.”
– Shaad D’Souza via VICE

“Intelligent lyrics drift above the grooviest of bass lines, only to be halted by an obscure swirl of fuzz or a distant glitch. Every detail counts.”
– Kylie O’Connell via Deafen County

Naarm/Melbourne-based duo Skydeck (AKA Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens) return with a new song and video titled ‘Dogshot’. The single comes alongside the announcement of the indie outfit’s sophomore album Coupon, set for release on Friday August 27 2021 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl.

Stream/watch ‘Dogshot’ HERE. Pre-order limited-edition 12″ vinyl HERE.

Featuring wiry synths, snappy electronic drums, an angular bassline and distorted guitars with Kearton’s vocals at the forefront, ‘Dogshot’ (an Australian sports term describing a late tackle or punch when one is distracted/not looking) reflects on exploitation in the gig economy.

“Worker exploitation is nothing new. Every so often it just morphs into a new form. These days, you have to make a pretty concerted effort to avoid relying on the services of the gig economy. It’s a pretty uncomfortable feeling knowing you are helping these companies (Uber et al.) make loads of money by exploiting their workers, commoditising their spare time and offering no form of security or protection back.”  Kearton says of the new track.

Skydeck ‘Dogshot’ Packshot

Accompanying ‘Dogshot’ is a video directed by Melbourne-based artist, Matthew Ware. The video features Ware’s childhood friend jujutsu training, and is a celebration of love and brotherhood.

Skydeck ‘Dogshot’ Video by Matthew Ware

Skydeck is the project of Naarm/Melbourne duo Dominic Kearton and Mitchum Clemens. Taking inspiration from cold, post-punk sounds of the 1980s, the band makes use of FM synthesis and the bright, clean and sometimes artificial sounds it provides, contrasted with distorted guitars and upbeat basslines.

Coupon is the follow-up to Skydeck’s Australian Music Prize-nominated debut Eureka Moment (2019), which saw praise and plays from the likes of VICE, triple j, FBi Radio, Bandcamp, The Music and Savage Thrills, and caught the attention of Spotify’s editorial team, with adds to a string of influential playlists.

While Eureka Moment was pieced together bit by bit, with lyrics applied to old unfinished demos years later – and gestured towards an anticapitalist sentiment, Coupon sees the band writing and recording in unison – this time, less focused on observing society’s issues from afar, rather reflecting on their own involvement within them.

Though writing and recording at the same time, founding members and long-time friends Mitchum Clemens and Dominic Kearton were physically separated throughout the entire process: one in Mexico and the other back home in Australia.

Coupon was as much an artistic endeavour as it was a way to stay connected with each other over long distances, with songs and ideas acting like letters back and forth. Evidence of this can be heard through field recordings and phone memos scattered throughout songs.

Coupon is set for release digitally and on limited-edition 12” vinyl on Friday August 27 via Dinosaur City Records, Osborne Again and Kingfisher Bluez.

Vantage ft. Todd Edwards – ‘Think I’m In Love’
Out Now

Following on from the viral success of his 2020 track ‘50/50’, Vantage returns to team up with GRAMMY award-winning artist, Todd Edwards on feel good track ‘Think I’m In Love’, out today on FFRR.

‘Think I’m In Love’ brings the energetic funk stylings of Vantage and fuses them with Todd Edward’s vocal wizardry for one of 2021’s sure fire stand out tracks.

Emerging onto the scene in 2015, Vantage has since cultivated an immersive world at the intersection of sound and technology. With a belief that the music and imagery should do the talking, Vantage has created an engaging visual world to coincide with his music on 2015 album ‘Metro City’ and channeled a sound that has been coined as ‘future funk’, on his distinctive second album ‘J-Funk City’ in 2019. More recently he saw his re-released single, ‘50/50’ becoming a viral hit via TikTok and found an audience on a global scale.

Todd Edwards is a name synonymous with electronic music, with a career spanning over 25 year he’s been widely credited as one of the ‘Godfathers’ of UK Garage. His perhaps most notable works have come in the form of his co-production & vocal credits with global icons, Daft Punk working on tracks ‘Face to Face’ and ‘Fragments of Time’, from the Discovery and Random Access Memories albums respectively, the latter providing him with an ‘Album Of The Year’ GRAMMY. An icon in his own right, Edwards has recently worked with artists such as Groove Armada, Tchami and Majestic, in addition to delivering his debut on Defected Records, ‘You’re Sorry’ charting at #1 on the Billboard Dance Chart.

Joining forces on ‘Think I’m In Love’, the forward-thinking pair deliver a track that is set to be a regular on radio and across dancefloors globally. Packed with a funky bassline and disco cowbells, ‘Think I’m In Love’ drives home the signature sound of Vantage and reinforces the undeniable influence of Todd Edwards impact on the worldwide music scene.

ANOTHER RHYTHM  / THREE SIX ZERO RECORDINGS
TIBASKO – ‘THE ONE’
OUT NOW
Over the last three years, London duo Ken Petalcorin and Andy Bowden, better known collectively as TIBASKO, have been creating heat with an appetite for their productions and a deal of attention coming from the likes of Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Jaguar, Ben Malone and more.

As they continue on their inspiring trajectory, the young pair drop new single, ‘The One’ out today. Released via Another Rhythm in partnership with Three Six Zero Recordings, the powerful euphoric track is an exercise in tension arguably beyond their years, and affirms TIBASKO as one of 2021’s breakout artists to watch.

The pair’s effortlessly indulgent production quality on “The One” forges an ambitious sense of scale; a reminder that their output is also aimed above and beyond the dancefloors, with the biggest festival crowds and global airwaves in sight.

With both Ken and Andy holding strong musical backgrounds and impressive global travels, TIBASKO is a unity of their musical colour; one that spans breakbeat, trance, melodic house and more rich techno sounds.

Bold in structure and tone, ‘The One’ elicits ultimate effervescence to a growing audience of fans; sculptured amongst psychedelic future-trance sounds and a fulfilling vocal hook.

“This track started from one synth Novation sound that we accidentally stumbled on and plays into the emotions and nostalgic memories of watching those festival mainstages to feel-good car rides with mates. We wanted to create a track that could be shared and loved by all.”
TIBASKO
TIBASKO have plays at a number of key parties under their belt already. From Percolate, Wonderland Brighton for Pride, Tobacco Dock, ADE and El Dorado their productions have also seen a wide range of support with their music championed by the likes of Denis Sulta, The Blessed Madonna, Pete Tong, John Digweed, Franky Wah, Hammer, TSHA, and many more… This purveyance of their authenticity has led them to be named in ‘The Hot List’ of acts on BBC Introducing in 2019 & 2020, to reaching number 3 in Kiss FM’s ‘One To Watch 2020’ list.

Now named as Radio 1 Pete Tong’s Future Stars for 2021, TIBASKO’s future is reassuringly vibrant and with no signs of slowing down, ‘The One’ is their most ample statement yet.
