QMusic CEO, Angela Samut said, “The quantity and high-calibre of song and music video submissions that have been submitted for this year’s QMAs is testament to the talent, resilience and relentless passion of Queensland musicians and their teams.
We are so proud to see the level of artistry, storytelling and music that our industry has continued to create over the past 12 months where most have experienced, and continue to experience, unprecedented hardship.
QMusic has introduced the Innovation Award as acknowledgement to artists and businesses that have managed to create new ways of doing business to not only survive, but thrive in 2020 and beyond.”

The Innovation Award winners will be announced live at the illustrious Queensland Music Awards ceremony on Wednesday 5 May. Public and self-nominations are open now via www.queenslandmusicawards.com.au.
Also appearing for the first time this year is the Contemporary Classical category, and the returning Childrens Music and Emerging Artist Of The Year Award; first introduced last year to recognise the valuable contributions made by Queensland’s newest and most promising musicians. The inaugural Emerging Artist Of The Year was awarded in 2020 to Brisbane’s Hope D (pictured above) who has since gone on to place in triple j’s Hottest 100, released her debut EP ‘Cash Only’ to critical acclaim, and is about to embark on her debut sold out national tour.
The full list of awards will be judged by over 100+ music industry professionals from all around the country, and diverse areas of the industry, giving finalists and winners the chance to catapult their careers into national significance. The 2021 judges include: Andrew Stone (Chugg Entertainment), Casey O’Shaughnessy (Select Music), Christina Thiers (Warner Music Australia), Declan Byrne (triple j), Maya Janeska (Believe Digital), Annie Chung (WME), Harry Young (Dew Process), Konstantin Kersting (producer), Joe Alexander (Bedroom Suck Records), Mark Holland (EMI), Sahara Herald (Frontier Touring), and more. JESS LOCKE Shares new single ‘Halo’ New album Don’t Ask Yourself Why out March 26

Praise for Jess Locke

“Australia has a flood of amazing rock artists in the wings posted to break through on an international level – a la Courtney Barnett or Gang of Youths. Melbourne artist Jess Locke has pushed her way to the forefront of this talented pack.” – The Guardian (Nathan Jolly)

“Jess Locke has again shown why she’s one of the country’s most exciting emerging indie rock stars.” – Double J (Dan Condon)

“…a songwriter capable of balancing introspective reflection with pop-skewed accessibility“
– Rolling Stone

Following an 8-date regional Victorian tour, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Jess Locke today shares ‘Halo’, the fourth track to be lifted off her forthcoming album Don’t Ask Yourself Why out Friday 26 March 2021 via Dot Dash Recordings.

‘Halo’ sees Locke employ the album’s producer Rob Muinos for a delicate duet that is at the same time deep and guttural. Locke comments, “As soon as I wrote this song, I knew exactly how I wanted it to feel. Even before I wrote the words, I knew how I wanted them to feel in my throat. I knew I wanted this deep, guttural, almost monstrous sound. There is a Cat Power song called ‘Evolution’ that has a male vocal doubling the whole song and I couldn’t shake that idea for Halo. I am notoriously addicted to doubling my own vocals and I liked the idea of using a male double as a way to achieve that texture but also give more depth than just layering my own voice. I was thinking about who I knew that I could get to come in and sing it for me. Rob suggested that he could sing it as a guide take, so at least we could make sure the idea worked before getting someone to come in. As soon as he did it I knew it was perfect. I love the way our voices sound together. It’s one of my favourite parts of the whole album and it absolutely achieved what I had in my head the whole time. Instrumentally, I always wanted this song to be very minimalistic, but it was hard to figure out how to do that without just being boring. Some of my favourite parts about this track are things I wouldn’t have thought to do myself, like the subtle ambient synths weaving in and out and the slightly meandering bassline that perfectly offsets the relentlessness of the Wurlitzer. It introduces a bit of warmth and optimism to my melancholic tendencies. Even if, lyrically, the song is quite pessimistic, the music itself doesn’t fully submit to that sentiment and that’s the result of collaborating. If it was just me, all the songs would just be downers.”

‘Halo’ follows Locke‘s heartbreakingly humble ‘Dead and Gone’, grungey first single ‘Fool’ and emotional anthem ‘Destroy Everything’. Each have been received to wide acclaim with airplay across Australia and beyond including radio additions at Double J, FBi Radio, 2SER, RTR, & SYN, plus spins on triple j, KEXP & more.

Don’t Ask Yourself Why, Jess Locke’s third album, is twelve tracks steeped in the Melbourne songwriter’s trademark style – raw and honest storytelling, with a tendency for melancholy and at times poetic inclinations. The album traverses themes of human behaviour, our egos and self-reflection. On Don’t Ask Yourself Why, Locke invites contemplation. “I mean the phrase ironically, because really, I do want you to ask why” explains Locke.

Locke and bandmates James Morris and Chris Rawsthorne, worked with producer Rob Muinos (Saskwatch, Julia Jacklin), to record the album in a tiny studio in the back of a guitar shop in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, before it was mastered by John Davis at Metropolis in the UK (Lana Del Ray, The Killers, Gorillaz).

Where previous album Universe (2017) came out of years of playing live and evolving songs in that setting, Don’t Ask Yourself Why is more adventurous stylistically. Having little opportunity to perform songs live meant there were no practical limitations of how much instrumentation there would be, as long as it worked for the recording. “For this record I was a lot more open in my writing process than in the past in terms of genre. I tried not to write any particular kind of song and instead just see what kind of style the song wanted to be.” says Locke.

A multidisciplinary artist, Locke also designed the album cover art, as she has on previous releases. Of the work Locke remarks “I did this painting as part of a bunch I was doing based on things I saw when I went on walks. I painted flowers because they are both timeless and temporal and they, I think, invite contemplation. I think the artwork has elements of lightness and darkness in it which to me, seemed to fit the overall feel of the music. Most of all, flowers to me seem honest, which is what I ultimately try to be in my songs.”

Don’t Ask Yourself Why follows on from 2018’s 7” My Body Is An Ecosystem / Nothing At All and Locke‘s acclaimed 2017 LP Universe which debuted at #18 on the AIR Independent Label Album Chart, landed triple j Feature Album, was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and was #20 in Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2017.

MDOU MOCTAR Announce new album Afrique Victime Release new single ‘Tala Tannam’

Praise for Mdou Moctar

“An incandescent set of guitar music with a spontaneous, celebratory air—and a latent urgency”
– Pitchfork

“… raw guitar sound and haunting lyrics” – The Guardian

“Familiar elements of Tuareg electric guitar music are here: modal riffs and a kinetic six-beat, three-against-two pulse. But “Chismiten” — with lyrics chiding about the pointlessness of jealousy — supercharges those elements with guitar distortion, showy trills and an ever-increasing sense of urgency translated into propulsion.” – Jon Pareles, New York Times

“Fiercely brilliant.” – Bob Boilen, NPR

On Friday 21 May, Matador Records and Remote Control will release Afrique Victime, the long-awaited new album by Mdou Moctar.

With Afrique Victime the prodigious Tuareg guitarist and songwriter rips a new hole in the sky – boldly reforging contemporary Saharan music and “rock music” by melding guitar pyrotechnics, full-blast noise, and field recordings with poetic meditations on love, religion, women’s rights, inequality, and Western Africa’s exploitation at the hands of colonial powers.

Today, watch a video for the new song ‘Tala Tannam.’ While Mdou and his band are renowned for their volume and energy (see album opener ‘Chismiten‘), this song is largely unplugged – tracking a simple melody and a mellow, hypnotic beauty. Watch HERE.

“Tala Tannam means your tears,” says Mdou. “It is another love song of which I’m very fond.”

The clip was filmed in Niamey, Niger last year when bassist Mikey Coltun made the long journey to meet his bandmates and begin prep for the album’s release. “While the song talks about love, we wanted to show the love between friendships and the love of Niger,” says Coltun. “The video includes friends and family –in the Tuareg community in villages around Niamey as well as Hausa people from villages in the Dosso region.”

Mdou recently appeared on Off White’s “Imaginary TV” channel, with designer Virgil Abloh calling the guitarist, “one of my favorite musicians Rn.”

Mdou’s home is Agadez, a desert village in rural Niger. Inspired by traditional Tuareg melodies and YouTube videos of Eddie Van Halen’s six string techniques, he mastered the guitar and created his own burning style. A born charismatic, Mdou went on to tell his story as an aspiring artist by writing, producing, and starring in the first Tuareg language film: a remake of Purple Rain called Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai –  which translates to “Rain The Color Of Blue With A Little Red In It” – winning the approval of his family and his community. The word and the sound travelled across West Africa via mobile phone data cards, a popular form of local music distribution. Gruelling DIY world tours and albums on the independent US label Sahel Sounds followed, including 2019’s landmark Ilana: The Creator, which earned Mdou an ecstatic international audience.

Afrique Victime is result of the combined efforts of Mdou and the members of the band that shares his name. His crucial collaborator is Ahmoudou Madassane, who’s been his rhythm guitarist since 2008. Their two guitars are an alchemical combination. As a songwriter, producer, and recording artist Ahmoudou is the premier musical ambassador to Tuaregs in Niger – empowering young musicians with instruments, recording opportunities, and visas. Masassane helped form the revolutionary first woman-fronted Tuareg guitar band Les Filles De Illighadad, whose debut album and tours caused an international sensation in 2019.

The band’s youngest member is prodigal drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, also a member of both the well-known Niger band, Sultanat Star De L’air, and the longest running wedding band in Agadez, Etran De L’air. Souleymane’s playing on this album ferociously sets a new standard for the “rock” drum set.

Producer and bassist Mikey Coltun flies 20 hours from Brooklyn, NYC, then takes a 28-hour bus ride to reach Agadez so the band can practice and record. With no support from a major label or a manager, they made this journey out of Niger every time they toured. In the past three years, Mikey’s played over 500 shows on three continents as Mdou Moctar’s bassist, road manager, producer/recording engineer, and friend. Coltun recorded and produced Afrique Victime around the band’s travels in 2019 – working in studios, apartments, hotel rooms, venue backstages, and in field recordings in Niger.

Recording and honing songs as a touring outfit forged a live wire new sound. If Ilana was a late ’60s early ’70s ZZ Top and Black Sabbath record – Afrique Victime is mid-’70s to early ’80s Van Halen meets Black Flag meets Black Uhuru. The ferocity of Moctar’s electric guitar and the band’s hypnotic rhythm section are on awe-inspiring display ‘Chismiten’ and the mournful yet incandescent title track.

Elsewhere, Moctar finds inspiration in highlighting lesser-known facets of the group: “While people have gotten to know Mdou Moctar as a rock band, there is a whole different set of music with this band done on acoustic guitars, which we wanted to incorporate into this album in order to go through a sonic journey,” he says. Mdou pays homage to one of his heroes Abdallah Ag Oumbadagou, the legendary Niger musician and political revolutionary, on songs ‘Habibti’ and ‘Layla‘. “Abdallah was a contemporary of Tinariwen and helped to pioneer the sound of Tuareg guitar music blended with drum machines and electronic sounds”.

“From prison to Nobel prize. They ceded to Mandela / Africa is a victim of so many crimes / If we stay silent it will be the end of us / Why is this happening?” Moctar asks on the title track. “I want the world to know that we are making music to promote world peace and be with everyone on the same level, fighting against racism”, he says. “All colors and genders are equal. Women, men and children all suffer in the desert due to the colonization by France and therefore there is a lack of the basics – hospitals, drinking water, schools.”

The needs of Agadez are a major part of what drives Moctar as an artist and promoting the region’s youth through music is an especially personal cause. “I know what it’s like to have been in that position,” he says, “to not have the support of your family, or the money for guitars or strings, it’s really hard. I have a lot of support from the younger generation, because I help them out a lot. When I get back from tour, I give them gear that I bought while I was away so they can go out and form their own bands.”

Says Coltun: “In Agadez the music and feeling at Tuareg weddings is exactly like the best of Western DIY/Punk shows. It’s loud, energetic and powerful. There is a sense of everyone helping out. Tuaregs are a tight community. If you’re Tuareg you’re considered family.”

The music listeners are the beneficiaries of the staggeringly powerful do-it-yourself musical ethic of Mdou Moctar – the man and the band – who’ve worked so hard to bring the spirits of families and communities in Niger to the West. Afrique Victime sounds and feels like a Tuareg hand reaching down from the sky, and we are very lucky for this chance to get lifted.

Afrique Victime is now available for pre-order on LP, CD, and also on a limited-edition cell phone that arrives pre-loaded with the record.

Mdou Moctar – Afrique Victime is out Friday 21 May via Matador Records / Remote Control Records.

ERIKA DE CASIER Releases new single 'Drama'

ERIKA DE CASIER Releases new single ‘Drama’

Today, Erika de Casier serves up another dose of minimalist R&B with second new single, ‘Drama’. The song, the Copenhagen-based songwriter and producer says, centres around recognising and acknowledging one’s dramatic tendencies – “you know how sometimes you overthink or misinterpret a situation and act in a less reasonable manner.”

Of the song’s companion video which was directed by and starring de Casier, she says, “I wanted to create a sort of evil twin or alter ego of myself because you’re not entirely yourself when you’re in the violence of your own emotions.”

Born in Portugal and raised in Denmark, Erika de Casier initially made her mark as an ally of the Regelbau collective (home to Danish house acts DJ Sports, C.K and Central) before writing, co-producing and releasing debut album, Essentials, through her own Independent Jeep label. Her take on 90s/00s R&B became a slow-burn success story and Essentials graced Best of 2019 lists at Mixmag, Gorilla vs. Bear, FACT, Dummy, and Crack Magazine. Since signing to 4AD last year, de Casier has released the single ‘No Butterflies, No Nothing’, and was named in The Guardian and Clash Magazine’s New Artists for 2021. She is currently working on her second album.

Erika de Casier – ‘Drama’ is out now via 4AD / Remote Control Records.

“La Onda de Juan Pablo is a rich travelogue packed into 10 effervescent tracks…. a sonically rich, emotionally textured work, driven by the relationships that organically emerged as Wauters found collaborators in every new country he visited.” – Nylon

“The album is picaresque in its depictions of everyday heroes and their daily quests against the decidedly frenzied backdrop of the Uruguayan singer’s American transplant sensibilities.” – NPR

“[Waters] has proved himself to be something of an unrelenting force of joy. His songs are simple little sing-alongs that bask in a youthful naivety.” – Pitchfork

“[Wauters] music… conjures up the folk titans who haunted the streets and coffeeshops of Greenwich Village back in the ’60s.” – AV Club

Today, Juan Wauters shares ‘Unity’, a new collaboration with disco pop multi-instrumentalist Cola Boyy. ‘Unity’ is the third single from Juan’s forthcoming album Real Life Situations, out April 30, which also features collaborations with Mac DeMarco, Peter Sagar (AKA Homeshake), Nick Hakim, El David Aguilar, and more. ‘Unity’ is a hip-hop inspired rumination on partnership and defying expectations that exudes a palpable playfulness. ‘Unity’ follows the “groove-heavy, feel-good” (Remezcla) first single  ‘Presentation (with Nick Hakim and Benamin)‘, and the second single ‘Real” (with Mac Demarco)‘ which FADER called an “authentic alignment.”

Juan Wauters on ‘Unity’ – “Matthew Urango (A.K.A. Cola Boyy) and I have known each other since 2009. Back then we were both playing in our neighborhood bands. He played guitar in Sea Lions (out of Oxnard, CA) and I played guitar and sang in The Beets (out of Jackson Heights, NY).Sea Lions and The Beets did a lot of shows together then. After sometime both bands came to an end.

On the first west coast tour I did as Juan Wauters I asked Cola if he would play guitar in my band. He graciously did and after that we came along for about 50 to 100 shows. We toured the US and Europe together multiple times. That way I came to know Cola personally. I spent countless days at his house in Oxnard where I became close to his family and friends.

At that time he was starting to do his solo project. I liked his approach to music since day one so once he showed me what he was doing I was down. Back then we would do a lot of backyard and house shows in Oxnard. Any time I would play LA, I would make sure to pass by Oxnard and check in with the crew.  We developed a strong bond that way.

Once It came time to do Real Life Situations, an album in which I would invite my friends to write music with me, I thought Cola was a must. He was down since day one. We made time to have a couple of days together to work on the song. It was late February 2020.

I went to his house in Oxnard and we worked on the song over a three day period when we would record and hang out with his family. The song came out quite easily. Its all somewhat improvised. We did not have anything in mind before getting together. We definitely did not set any boundaries as for what we will make. We just got to it and let it out. It was definitely a good time. It shows in the song I think. It definitely fit the purpose.”

The interplay between genre-hopping eclecticism and earnest, plain-spoken observation makes Real Life Situations come alive. It’s something Wauters is known for, and for all its collaboration, this album could only have been made by him. Mining older songs, phone notes, new material, and snippets from TV and YouTube, he’s crafted an aural document of the year through his eyes. Jubilant choruses and spoken word poetry bleed into city noises and overheard conversations. Real freedom, the album suggests, comes not from gaining control, but from accepting its artifice.

Until recently, Wauters had viewed his solo project as just that – a singular expression of his artistic vision. A trip through Latin America while recording his last album, however, laid the groundwork for a different approach. Inviting local musicians to contribute to the songs he was working on produced a collection unlike any of his previous work, infused with the musical traditions of each country he’d visited. As a result, 2018’s La Onda De Juan Pablo and its follow-up, Introducing Juan Pablo, were Wauters’ most expansive and sonically diverse records to date, tracing both his Uruguayan roots and his travellers’ spirit. On Real Life Situations, he’s channeled this collaborative spirit, lending his chameleonic songwriting to experiments in hip-hop, lo-fi R&B, and deft indie folk.

Real Life Situations will be released digitally on April 30 and physically on May 14.

Presented by the First Nations owned and operated Gaba Musik, two one-off, multi-act music and culture events BLAKTIVISM and PASIFIX will celebrate Australia’s proud First Nations and Pacific Islander communities at Live at the Bowl next month. In 2020, the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States made headlines and proliferated around the globe. It connected with activists in Australia who have long been speaking out about our own unique history of colonialism and how this affects our modern identity as a country. These Blak voices are on the rise. Curated by Airileke and Deline Briscoe, Artistic Directors of Gaba Musik, these two events are a direct response to the global dialogue around the Black Lives Matter movement and Australia’s response to Indigenous sovereignty. By centring Blak voices, these events address the lack of Australian Pacific and First Nations cultural representation in the Australian performing arts fabric. “The artists across these two major events are representative of the most exciting Pacific music in Australia, and some of the most outstanding voices of First Nations Australia,” say Artistic Directors of Gaba Musik, Airileke and Deline Briscoe. On Saturday 3 April, BLAKTIVISM will bring together living legends and rising voices of First Nations political activism. Featuring Yothu Yindi, Bart Willoughby, Tasman Keith, Emma Donovan, Deline Briscoe, Allara, Kee’ahn, Sorong Samarai and Ziggy Ramo, the line-up represents voices from across generations. BLAKTIVISM begins with a Woi Wurrong led ceremony called Mundanai which means ‘embrace’; a cleansing ceremony for the year that has been and an acknowledgement of the pain of the past 200 years. Then on Saturday 10 April, PASIFIX is an all-ages celebration of the incredible lineage of culture, music and tradition from Pacific artists across the archipelago. Featuring the renowned vocals, tight beats and big pop sounds of Ngaiire, viral hip-hop drill crew No Money Enterprise (NME) and the new boys of Aussie-Poly rap STNDRD; Pacific artists who are having an unmistakable impact on the Australian contemporary music scene. Opening the evening will be the PASIFIX All Stars under the direction of Airileke – one of the Pacific’s leading musical identities. Fijian multi-instrumentalist Kaivili is joined by the Pasefika Vitoria Choir, the Drums of the Pacific and more special guests to be announced. Hosts for the evening will be Efeso (Fez) Faanana (Briefs Factory International) and Thomas (Kween Kong) Fonua (Haus of Kong). Pacific and First Nations takeover at Live at the Bowl

BRIJEAN new album Feelings out now + release video for ‘Wifi Beach’

PRAISE FOR FEELINGS

2SER Feature Album

“The retro tropicália and gauzy shimmer of jazz-filled sunny island afternoons are in abundance on Feelings, an expansion of the sound the pair began with 2019’s Walkie Talkie.” – A. V. Club

“A vibrant cauldron of funky lounge pop, bossa nova, psych, jazz and IDM.” – Paste

“From start to finish, Feelings has a kind of sonic luxuriousness that mirrors the lyrics’s immutable joy. It’s a balm, and a thing to treasure.” – Bandcamp Album Of The Day

“Brijean makes insightful, groove-based music designed for the listener to have an expressive moment.” – SPIN

Brijean – the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart – release their new album, Feelings, via on Ghostly International. The duo also have released the video for ‘Wifi Beach.’ The group improvised the track’s intro sequence based on the vision of a lavish 1970s pool party. Establishing the scene is a mid-frequency drum kit disco shuffle augmented by tight congas and timbale effect. “This song exists somewhere between our love for disco, montunos, and psychedelic pool parties,” says Murphy.

Directed by Nathan Castiel in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, the accompanying video reflects Brijean’s colorful sounds and eclectic inspirations. It shows the members playing their respective instruments in highly stylized and vibrant sets, which were inspired by an old Karen Carpenter TV performance segment. Murphy elaborates:  “Nathan developed the idea further and fabricated an immersive and psychedelic hand painted set which included custom congas that I painted as well as a large stained-glass piece and backdrop that I designed. Between the studio set in LA and the wonderfully decorated house in Palm Springs, we explored nostalgia.”

Watch “Wifi Beach” Video

Murphy – one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls) – and Stuart, who share backgrounds in jazz, Latin and soul music and were both fixtures in Oakland’s diverse music scene, began collaborating in 2018. Following the duo’s first sessions, which resulted in the mini-album Walkie Talkie (released in 2019 on Native Cat Recordings), Brijean continued collaborating in Oakland, inviting friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers, and Hamir Atwal, who all would end up contributing to the album. The leap from 2019’s Walkie Talkie to Feelings is marked by a notable expanse in range and energy. Brijean’s signature sound — a golden-hued dream pop tropicalia of dazzling beats and honeyed vocals — elevates with the addition of live drummers, strings, and synths. The album also finds Murphy fully trusting in her strengths, not just as a percussionist, but as a songwriter and collaborator.

Brijean wants you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul. With Feelings, they’ve manifested a gentle collective space for respite, for self-reflection, for self-care, for uninhibited imagination and new possibilities.

Already pulling in over 170,000 views over the first few episodes, MELODOWNZ has returned to the couch for Season 2 of his highly popular YouTube series, Kava Corner. And this week, MELO is joined by ‘Supalonely’ superstar BENEE.

BENEE delves into talking life before success with MELO, her favourite tour memories, favourite new artists, and what she’d get as a face tattoo. Watch Benee on Kava Cortner HERE.

Kava Corner Season 2 drops off the back of MELODOWNZ’s release of ‘Money‘, the Polynesian wordsmith’s first drop of new music for 2021. ‘Money‘ is produced by DJ Khalil (Dr Dre, Nipsey Hussle, A$AP Rocky) and Tariq Beats (A$AP Ferg, Tyga, G Eazy, Tinashe) who layer MELODOWNZ‘s blistering grit atop slapping drums and brooding chords. With room to breathe, the result is a savage assessment of capitalism, clout, class systems, materialism, poverty and the price of fame.

“When I wrote ‘Money’ I wanted to express how we are conditioned by money in today’s society. It’s a social norm to want nice things, have a good job, get married, have kids, buy a house etc. To a lot of people, that is their validation for success,” MELODOWNZ says. “I wrote the first half of the song back in 2014, so to revisit it, switch it up, and get it finished in LA at DJ Khalil’s studio was a true dream for me.”

Fresh off of an extensive Summer tour playing several festival main-stage slots across New Zealand, ‘Money’ is the latest offering from the rapper’s forthcoming debut studio album set for release this year, following his collaboration with Denzel Curry on ‘No Mercy’, ‘Fine’, and ‘Big Deals’ featuring Diggy Dupé. Stay tuned for more from MELODOWNZ in 2021.

‘Money’ is out now via Def Jam ANZ / SNIFFERS Records,

SECOND IDOL REVEAL BREATHTAKING ACCOMPANYING VIDEO CLIP FOR DEBUT ‘WHITE NOISE’

by the partae March 3, 2021
written by the partae

SUPPORT FOR ‘WHITE NOISE’

“Charged bursts of captivating alt-rock-meets-punk-pop that sits in-line with long-time influences from Sonic Youth and Savages.”
Pilerats (AUS)

“Teeth bared, Second Idol standing up with some fire in the belly here.”
Dave Ruby Howe – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

“The punk spirit is strong in this one! sorry, didn’t mean to sound like Yoda, but yeah there’s a confidence and stick it to the man type attitude pulsing through this.”
Declan Byrne – triple j (AUS)

Following on from the release of their critically praised debut single ‘White Noise’, Sydney-based alternative-rock trio Second Idol have just returned with the striking accompanying video clip – directed by Olivia Costa.

Shot in an abandoned warehouse studio in Lilyfield, Sydney, the video clip follows two men wrestling, fighting and dancing, exploring the tracks’ central themes of conflict between femininity and masculinity. As the clip unfolds, the contrast between the bands uniform like outfits and the two main characters sets the stage for the growing tension and violence.

Lead singer Kate Olivia talks about the process behind the clip:

“We filmed this in 40-degree heat late last year, which is incredibly ironic given what we’re wearing in the clip. It used to be an old car factory, and the room we filmed in felt a bit like an abattoir and had a very sinister feel about it. In between takes we were running to stick our faces in front of fans and portable air conditioning units. Given the extreme circumstances, it was an insane effort by all involved and we had an amazing crew who looked after us and were absolute troopers.”

Second Idol consists of Kate Olivia, Theia Joyeaux and Maxine Gillon, who take inspiration from alternative-rock luminaires Savages, Placebo and Sonic Youth. After launching ‘White Noise’ to a rapt crowd at Frankies Pizza on February 27, the band will continue their run with a performance at Mardi Gras for Queer As Fvck in early March and supporting August Auzins at The Factory Theatre.

Since release, the track has seen support from Australian radio stations triple j, triple j Unearthed, FBi, RTR, 4ZZZ, 2SER, Edge Radio and The Faction. It’s also been embraced by blogs Pilerats, The Music, Temporary Dreamer, Something You Said and Milky.

Outside of the band, the trio are proud members of Sydney’s LGBTQIA community and work with organisations such as Queer As Fvck, as well as queer and mental health charity Baylin’s Gift, located in lead singer Kate Olivia’s hometown of Kempsey on the Mid North Coast of NSW. “I’ve experienced prejudice and negativity in relation to my gender, sexuality and cultural background, so I’m reflexively a supporter of minority groups and the pursuit of equality” Kate adds.

‘White Noise’ is available worldwide now

Where are you based?  I’m from a small town of Pravdinsk (Kaliningrad region, Russia). At the moment I live in one of the districts of Kaliningrad.   What influenced the sound behind your debut EP on Soma Records, titled Rave Is Dead? I started working on the release in the first wave of covid, when we were all at home, it was spring, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was warm enough and the windows of the house were constantly opened. A public warning system was often triggered on the street, where police told everyone through the loud speakers to stay at home and follow the rules. At that time only food stores and pharmacies worked. Everything was not clear, what's next?! This made me angry. But at the same time I had a lot of free time and was locked in 4 walls. It all pressed psychologically, I wanted to destroy these walls. So I began to write this EP.   What inspired the title of the EP? Rave Is Dead is a kind of "scream of despair". We're all locked up, the rave is out of breath and needs a new impulse. Hope it happens soon. Very soon ...   What is your creative process like and how much did lockdown influence this? At that time, nothing distracted me. I devoted most of my time to music, so I could distract myself from everything that was happening around. Only occasionally I watched TV series or my brother and I went into the woods to the old broken bridge so that the police would not catch us and issue a fine, then it was impossible to leave the house, and there we listened to new demos through small speakers. Then we discussed them. Sounds weird, but it was also a weird time.   How did you approach the recording and production process for the Rave Is Dead EP? When I sit down to work, I immerse myself in it. Sometimes I don't even hear when my family members call me from the next room. I have a laptop, sound card, microphone and headphones at my disposal. I record a lot of live sounds; how the car brakes outside the window or for example, the metallic sound of a pan, a lot of things. Then you process it all and choose the best moments. I experiment a lot.   Have you always been a fan of Soma Records? Yes, I've been following the label for a long time. And to be honest, I couldn’t even imagine that my tracks someday will be released on this label. I am very happy.   When did you first start playing music and how did this evolve into electronic music? It was about 2006, I don't remember exactly. I was in high school and began to make the first steps in creativity. I was listening to drum'n'bass and started to write it. Over time tastes and quality changed and in the end I came to the music that I make now.   Who would you say are your biggest musical influences? This is my brother. It was he who "hooked" me on music: The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, etc. I fell in love with this music.   Once the world can dance again, where are you most excited to play? Let me dream a little. I haven't traveled outside the country for a long time. Now it has become much more difficult, but I really hope that this is all temporary. I would like to visit and perform in cities such as London, Berlin, Amsterdam and many others.   What does the rest of 2021 hold for Namesis? New releases, new collaborations, preparing a live performance and that's not all. Soon you will definitely hear and see everything yourself!

Namesis

The dark & brooding sound of Russian producer Namesis debuts on Soma Records with the Rave Is Dead EP on 8th March. Taking inspiration from various electronic disciplines such as new beat, EBM and even industrial, Namesis has created a solid release consisting of superbly crafted dark, synth driven music.
He started working on the 5 track EP during the first wave of Covid when he was at home in Kaliningrad, the westernmost city in Russia. A public warning system was often triggered on the street with the police using loudspeakers, warning them to stay home and follow the rules. Experimenting with lots of live sounds from car brakes to the metallic sounds of a pan became a form of escape from the confines of home.

Everything was not clear, what’s next?! This made me angry. But at the same time I had a lot of free time and was locked in 4 walls. It all pressed psychologically, I wanted to destroy these walls. So I began to write this EP.

What inspired the title of the EP?

Rave Is Dead is a kind of “scream of despair”. We’re all locked up, the rave is out of breath and needs a new impulse. Hope it happens soon. Very soon …

Sometimes I don’t even hear when my family members call me from the next room.

Yes, I’ve been following the label for a long time. And to be honest, I couldn’t even imagine that my tracks someday will be released on this label. I am very happy.

When did you first start playing music and how did this evolve into electronic music?

It was about 2006, I don’t remember exactly. I was in high school and began to make the first steps in creativity. I was listening to drum’n’bass and started to write it. Over time tastes and quality changed and in the end I came to the music that I make now.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

This is my brother. It was he who “hooked” me on music: The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, etc. I fell in love with this music.

Once the world can dance again, where are you most excited to play?

Let me dream a little. I haven’t traveled outside the country for a long time. Now it has become much more difficult, but I really hope that this is all temporary. I would like to visit and perform in cities such as London, Berlin, Amsterdam and many others.

What does the rest of 2021 hold for Namesis?

New releases, new collaborations, preparing a live performance and that’s not all. Soon you will definitely hear and see everything yourself!

Sarah Jane is a prolific Alt-Rock, Indie singer, songwriter from Sydney, Australia who has amassed a huge online following. ‘Lately’ is the first single from her new EP and is out now.  With over 290,000 subscribers and 30 million views on YouTube it would be accurate to call the young musician a viral sensation.  The new EP follows two solo albums “Absence’, an acoustic album released in 2019, and the album ‘Tainted Timeline” released late in 2020. Sarah Jane has released two full-length records with her band ‘The Violet Stones’ over the same period. Sarah Jane has over 80,000 streams on her single ‘Backwards’, over 10,000 streams on both ‘Sleepwalking’ and ‘Control’ on Spotify and has been played on Home & Hosed on Triple J. Sarah Jane – ‘‘Lately’ is about the anxiety felt when you feel like you’re not needed anymore in a relationship. Even when you know it’s in your head, it’s hard to bring yourself out of it. Tying in with the video, it shows the emptiness and the dark emotions that come with anxiety.” Sarah played and recorded all the instruments on Lately. The track was mixed/mastered by George Pauley. Where are you currently based?  I’m currently based in the Inner West of Sydney! I just moved to this area in January  How did you first start playing music?  I’ve always had an interest in music but it wasn’t until my dad pushed me to learn piano and over the years I slowly moved over to singing, guitar & drums.  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?  This past year has really given me some time to just buckle down and record as much as I can. Sometimes it’s hard to balance playing shows & recording so I’m not sure if I would have released an album and be able to work on another EP if Covid didn’t happen. I did miss out on playing some really cool shows mid 2020 which is such a shame as I love playing live but there was a silver lining.  Your new single 'Lately' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?  I wrote the song in March of 2020 and I had been listening to a lot of PJ Harvey and Hum at the time & what I love a lot about those bands are the dynamics and production. I guess I have been trying to match the vibe of PJ Harvey’s ‘Rid of Me’ & Hum’s ‘You’d prefer an Astronaut’.  Where and when did you record/produce/master?  I recorded everything myself in my (my dad’s) small home studio around September 2020. My dad’s a drummer so he has all the equipment which I’m super lucky to have access to as well as a bunch of recording gear. I also played all the instruments myself as it’s so much easier to come up with parts as I know what my vision is & there’s no messy communication.  I also got really into different recording techniques & I originally wanted to mix it myself but I decided I shouldn’t put too much pressure on myself. George Pauley ended up mixing and mastering it!  Please tell us about how the concept for the video came about:  The song is mainly about unreasonable anxiety and feeling as though you’re not needed anymore in a relationship. The way I see it connect to the video is that is a representation and visualisation of anxiety. Being in one room, just indulging in the feeling and then walking out like nothing ever happened can just visualise some anxieties. You know it’s unreasonable but you’re still anxious!  We just wanted to portray a certain set of emotions that were connected to the songs meaning.  Where and when did you film and who did you work with?  The whole of the video (direction, concept, editing, filming etc.) was done by Jack Barratt. I wanted to have one less thing to worry about when it came to the release of the song so he basically come up with everything haha We filmed it in around 4 hours at a budget hotel in the Inner West. It was a tiny room and even smaller bathroom, but we made it work!  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation on the video?  100% the shower scene. It was so uncomfortable getting wet in clothes and it was even worse in the last scene where I had to walk out whilst I was still wet. It was so cold! But the shower shot is definitely my favourite so it was worth it! Please tell us about any upcoming shows:  I have a show this Sunday (28th Feb) at The Factory Theatre with our friends Monstahouse and Jerranis supporting. This will be my first live show where I have a band backing me. I’m so excited to finally play my songs live and loud! How did you prepare for live shows?  I’m definitely a stress head when it comes to playing shows. I’m always scared of running late or forgetting how to play the songs so I definitely prepare by getting there early and just having some time to chill beforehand & making sure my voice is warmed up & drinking plenty of water.  You have an EP on the way, what can you tell us?  I’ve been nonstop working on new music! This EP will be a little bit different from my last album. It’s less full-on grunge, more light, a little post-rock, think Mogwai meets Failure...  Who are you listening to at the moment?  I’m listening to a lot of Failure, OH and Hayley Williams just released a new album and it’s been on repeat ever since. Some Queens of the Stone Age, A LOT of Radiohead (as usual) & Porcupine Tree. What do you like to do away from music?  This is sort of lame but I love planning things & cleaning (super lame I know but it’s therapeutic!). I also just like to chill and watch TV shows, play games with friends or go thrift shopping.  Favourite food and place to hangout?  I love going to Newtown, so many yummy vegan restaurants to choose from. Gotta love Gigi’s Pizza!  Lately Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl0-5IrBVTY Linktree https://linktr.ee/sarahmusicjane

Where are you currently based?

I’m currently based in the Inner West of Sydney! I just moved to this area in January

How did you first start playing music?

I’ve always had an interest in music but it wasn’t until my dad pushed me to learn piano and over the years I slowly moved over to singing, guitar & drums.

This past year has really given me some time to just buckle down and record as much as I can.
