JOHN CARPENTER SHARES NEW SINGLE THE DEAD WALK NEW ALBUM LOST THEMES III: ALIVE AFTER DEATH SET FOR RELEASE FEBRUARY 5 VIA SACRED BONES RECORDS

John Carpenter has shared a new single and visualiser for “The Dead Walk,” a track from his first album of non-soundtrack music in nearly five years, Lost Themes III: Alive After Death (set for release February 5 from Sacred Bones).

The song’s pulsing synths and skittering hi-hats calls to mind a zombie apocalypse situated in a discotheque, a mental image reinforced by the accompanying visualiser in which artwork by Boneface is given creepy life by Liam Brazier’s animation. The clip also hints toward a more detailed visual collaboration to come.

Underpinning Carpenter’s musical renaissance has been his ongoing and evolving collaboration with Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies. They’ve composed and performed as a trio since the first Lost Themes album in 2015: on studio albums, on soundtracks, and onstage.

On Lost Themes III, the trio reaches a new level of creative mind meld as richly rendered worlds are built in the interplay between Davies’s guitar and the duelling synthesisers played by the Carpenters. But whereas the original Lost Themes album came as a pleasant surprise after years of relative silence from Carpenter, the third instalment sees him in the midst of a resurgent moment as a cultural force. The trio’s 2018 Halloween score gave his music its biggest audience in decades, and the world he releases his new album into is one that has, at long last, given him the credit he deserves as a founding father of modern electronic music.

LOST THEMES III: ALIVE AFTER DEATH TRACK LIST

1. Alive After Death
2. Weeping Ghost
3. Dripping Blood
4. Dead Eyes
5. Vampire’s Touch
6. Cemetery
7. Skeleton
8. Turning the Bones

MIDNIGHT OIL & FIRST NATIONS COLLABORATORS PRESENT MAKARRATA LIVE FEBRUARY/MARCH 2021 SPECIAL THEMED SHOWS WITH INDIGENOUS COLLABORATORS TO HELP ELEVATE THE ULURU STATEMENT FROM THE HEART AND REMEMBER BONES HILLMAN

In early 2021 Midnight Oil will perform a handful of special outdoor concerts called Makarrata Live. At each show, the band will be joined on stage by an incredible line up of First Nations collaborators for a unique concert event featuring music from their #1 mini album The Makarrata Project plus iconic Midnight Oil songs of Reconciliation from throughout their career.

These gigs will seek to elevate The Uluru Statement From The Heart which calls for a Makarrata – or “truth telling” – to account for the theft of lands and displacement of First Nations people. The shows will take place in strict accordance with each state’s Covid19 protocols. Due to the huge logistical challenges involved, these events will only be staged at one venue in SA, QLD, NSW, VIC & ACT making them each a unique live experience. The band is aware that many fans will be disappointed that the tour is visiting such a limited number of locations but Midnight Oil will tour in their own right later in 2021 by which time large indoor shows can hopefully be staged safely and without compromise throughout Australia and New Zealand at least.

Makarrata Live will be previewed at Sirromet Wines (near Brisbane) on Sunday 28 February, before its official world premiere on Monday 8 March at WOMADelaide in South Australia (at which the band will also perform a one-off headline performance on Saturday 6 March). The Makarrata Live dates will then follow on at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley on Saturday 13 March and Canberra’s Stage 88 on Wednesday 17 March before a grand finale at Geelong’s Mt Duneed Estate on Saturday 20 March. For full tour and ticketing info see below.

“We’re relieved and excited at the thought of finally playing music to live audiences again”, said Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett. “Lots of the songs which have struck the deepest chords with our audiences over the years, like Beds Are Burning, Jimmy Sharman’s Boxers, The Dead Heart and Truganini, revolve around Indigenous issues so we’re definitely inspired to be playing a set that combines older songs like those with newer songs that share similar lyrical themes.”

“The most fulfilling part of The Makarrata Project came through collaborating with so many First Nations artists during those recording sessions”, adds the band’s guitarist and keyboard player, Jim Moginie. “I think everyone’s looking forward to seeing what shape all the music from different eras takes as those gifted singers add their voices to it live. We’ve never done anything like this so it feels good to still be pushing the envelope a bit despite everything that’s happened in 2020.”

Midnight Oil originally planned to play some Makarrata Live concerts earlier this year including a headlining slot at Splendour In The Grass. Those plans were unfortunately delayed by Covid19 and were then thrown into doubt by the harrowing terminal illness of long-time bass player, Bones Hillman. However, Bones urged his bandmates to proceed with these live shows to help draw focus to the new recordings the group had all made together late last year. In fact, just a few hours before his tragic passing he received confirmation that The Makarrata Project had debuted at the top of the ARIA Album Charts. It was Midnight Oil’s first new music #1 since Hillman’s very first record with the band, Blue Sky Mining, way back in 1990.

“Bonesy leaves giant shoes to fill but we’ll need to find a new bass player for this tour”, said drummer Rob Hirst. “On this issue Bones was clear: ‘the show must go on!’, he said, ‘as soon as it’s safe to play gigs again’. We’re hoping that these Makarrata Live shows will increase awareness of The Uluru Statement From The Heart and further the reconciliation between First Nations and non-Indigenous Australians, we’ll also be dedicating the tour to Bones.”

“It’s thanks to an extraordinary combination of artists that The Makarrata Project has been elevated beyond the individual talents of this singular band of thinkers and feelers into something truly meaningful, momentous and far sighted.”
– Andrew McMillen, The Australian“Albums commanding as much interest as The Makarrata Project are few and far between and the Oils have seized upon the “unfinished business in Australia”, as Peter Garrett recently called it, to put The Uluru Statement front and centre.”

The Rubens have gifted fans with another incredibly catchy single ‘Masterpiece’ – a song about retrospectively realising you lost The One (“know I got it wrong, really all along, you were just a masterpiece”). Matching the same slick sonic palette as single ‘Live In Life’, ‘Masterpiece’ – also lifted from the band’s forthcoming new album 0202 (Feb 12) – is an irresistible dance across alt-rock, rnb, pop and hip hop genres, colliding into a sound that’s now uniquely their own.

THE RUBENS RELEASE ‘MASTERPIECE’ LIFTED FROM FOURTH ALBUM 0202 – OUT FRIDAY 12 FEBRUARY 2021

WATCH: ‘Masterpiece’ by The Rubens
“The song is about giving someone up, the doubt and eventual regret in realising you got it wrong.” – The Rubens
The release follows the recent news that ‘Live In Life’ – nominated for ARIA Song Of The Year – was the third most streamed Australian song of 2020 on Spotify (behind two songs from Tones & I).

Cementing their status as a band that continues to evolve as songwriters and push the boundaries of alternative rock/pop, new album 0202 – featuring recent singles ‘Time Of My Life’, ‘Heavy Weather’ & ‘Live In Life’ – is a forward-thinking album for a backward year, and an exciting new chapter for The Rubens celebrating the five-piece at their creative peak. With 0202 the band have fully transformed into an alt-rock/pop powerhouse and self-produced an album that will have people re-evaluating what they thought they knew about The Rubens.

As well as finishing their fourth album, 2020 saw the band throw their support behind Year 12 students doing it tough through COVID by launching Study Break – a 1hour online professional development workshop for students interested in pursuing a career in music. The band also announced their 0202 Music Grants in partnership with Ivy League Records & Mushroom Group, awarding ten Year 12 students who demonstrate a passion for music and a desire to further their studies or business ideas $500 each to contribute to their next journey.

The arrival of The Rubens fourth album – almost ten years since their first upload to triple j unearthed as teenagers! – is a credit to their incessant work ethic & the impact the band have made over their incredible career. LO LA RU, featured hits ‘Never Ever (feat Sarah)’ (now Double Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Certified Gold), ‘God Forgot’ (Certified Gold) and lead to sold out shows and a 42-date Arena tour supporting megastar P!NK. Hoops saw the band sell out headline shows at Hordern Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena and included hits ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Cut Me Loose’ and of course the 4 x Platinum the hit title track, which topped the 2015 triple j Hottest 100, while their debut self-titled LP was home to ‘My Gun’ (Certified Platinum), ‘Lay It Down’ (Certified Gold), ‘The Best We Got’ and more fan-favourites.

A huge testament to their unwavering talent and ability to constantly reinvent themselves,  0202 marks the start of yet another exciting chapter for the band.  “We’re so bloody proud of this album and the way we created it, and we can’t believe how lucky we are to have made it this far. Thanks to all our fans for being there, we can’t wait for you to hear this one!”

Following the recent second postponement of the band’s ‘Live In Life’ tour due to COVID-19, their biggest headline tour to date, the tour was rebranded to the 0202 Album Tour. The new dates, taking place from April – June, 2021, will see the NSW band play metro cities for the first time since their 2018 LO LA RU album shows as well as regional venues across the 24-date run.

DUST OF US take latest single ‘PUNCHING BAG’ into new territory with remix package

by the partae December 8, 2020
written by the partae

With the release of ‘Punching Bag’ this month, Dust Of Us gave fans further insight into the layered and idiosyncratic world of their upcoming debut EP. Collaborating with talented Australian-born, UK-based vocalist Jess Chalker gave the song additional emotive heft and a melodic beauty to offset its dark lyrical content.

Today, Dust Of Us delivers two special remixes of the track – one by cinematic Brisbane indie-pop group Fresco Kyoto and the other by Melbourne-based production whiz Super Magic Hats. The two artists offer drastically different reinterpretations that take the original song into colourful different territory.

Fresco Kyoto’s take on the original sees vocalist Robbie Balmer incorporate his own vocals onto the track, turning it into a duet. And under the production work of Super Magic Hats, ‘Punching Bag’ has been brought into vibrant landscape dictated by glitchy beats and electronic prowess. The Super Magic Hats remix comes complete with a video shot by Dust of Us’ Lloyd Prescott outside the window of a train in Japan.
“We were really humbled and quite gobsmacked by the remixes that came back, the love and the care that went into them was immediately apparent. Both versions took the song into completely different realms. With Fresco Kyoto’s remix, they obviously spent ages crafting the arrangement and it was so cool to hear their singer Robbie add his vocal to the track, he’s got one of the most amazing voices. Meanwhile, the production chops and dynamics on display on the Super Magic Hats remix are just outta this world. He took the song somewhere so wildly different and exciting.” Dust Of Us

“A dynamic, textured indie-pop dreamland.”
Left Bank Magazine

“‘The Swans’ is a remarkable musical piece that evokes a magical landscape and a serenity that is hard to find in these type of tracks.”
Synthpopyourworld

“Beautiful song, well executed. Really like the way it falls into a deeper song with its progression, without taking away from the delicacy of the production.”

“It gently seeps. The production is super cool, I can’t stop listening to it. I just want to know what next element you twist or work into the track. Nice, guys.”

What is your name and role within VINNY? Mr Aubry - I play the role as the singer Where are you currently based? Melbourne, Australia.  What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been? Not a lot, sitting poolside sipping martini’s. Laying low trying to bliss out in the sun. Iso was amazing! We aren’t ready to go back yet.  How did VINNY form? We were deep in a session at an underground disco church. When out of nowhere a 7 foot gorgeous man laced in a tailor disco ball suit approached us and offered us the job. We then spent 4 years at a secret Island in VIN-CAMP learning all the ways of VINNY. Once graduating from VIN-CAMP we were placed back at the same underground disco church which is now a Chinese take-away restaurant and we’ve been following the way of VINNY ever since.  Your new single 'Fire' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?  We wanted a dance floor banger. Something that makes you want to move and feel good. At the time we were listening to a lot of 70’s disco and rock n roll. From Janis Ian, Barry white & Rick James to INXS, stones & The Clash.  the song by sunrise.” How did Fire come about? We had this groove and feeling in our bones. We were lying poolside sipping pina coladas, watching the sun go down when out of nowhere, a topless, coconut-oiled man walked past us down to the beach playing his saxophone, shooting fire out of the bell (thus the name, ‘Fire’). We befriended him and asked if he would come into the studio that night to help us finish off the track. We worked throughout the night and finished the song by sunrise. Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with? We recorded Fire in a secluded island off the Bahamas! We worked with Alex Markwell & Alex Gopher. Massive love to the whole team   How did you approach the recording process? We just went in and got it done. Good vibes, good food & booze. A very relaxing and exciting experience.  What programs/instruments did you use? This is private information we are not allowed to dispose of. Thank you.  What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of Fire? Most rewarding was spending a month on a secluded island with 6 of my best friends. Most challenging was spending a month on a secluded island with 6 of my best friends.  Any shows coming up? Nothing as of yet. Will be a while before we play our debut show. Which let me tell you. Will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Barry White. Too much Barry White. Not enough Barry White.  What do you like to do away from music? Go on river boat gambling trips.  What's planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021? Coming out of 2020 with a bang. Lots of things in the works. 2021 we go into movement for world domination. The future looks bright ahead.  Favourite food and place to hangout? Ramen for me atm.  I loveeee hanging out at our dear friends new venue WESTWOOD in footscray. It’s a belter of a joint. Just don’t forget your passport!  Adios, bye for now, thank you, love you, VINNY bless you all  https://www.facebook.com/VINNYDISCO/

Who is VINNY? The Melbourne trio return with new single ‘FIRE’

by the partae December 8, 2020
written by the partae

Armed with infectious bass lines and vocal swagger that is intriguing as it is seductive, Melbourne trio VINNY return with brand new single, ‘Fire’. As their second release for the year, the group have taken a deep dive into some sharp and edgy rock vibes, flecked out with funk and indie influences.

‘Fire’ is the perfect starting point for newcomers to the VINNY sound and with its release, the band says ‘Welcome’; let the music wrap you up as you get your head around who this band is at their core.

And who is VINNY at their core? Self described as forming from ‘the pits of a dark neon lit disco church’, the band is vocalist/percussionist Josh Aubry, guitarist/synths player Jim Stirton and guitarist Tony Clay. Together, the band’s influences range from hedonistic images of a Studio 54 mythology, the seedy dancefloors of Melbourne’s clubs and slick sorts of soundtracks that can only be found in Spaghetti Westerns. The music’s over the top and drenched in grooves and tight in its delivery, testament to the band’s history of writing and performing with one another.

Debut track ‘Chaos’ was released back in May and it was just as the title indicated; a hectic way for VINNY to make their presence known. ‘Fire’ takes things a step further, giving the listener an outlet to let their hair down and immerse themselves in the melodies and confident arrangement.

As to where ‘Fire’ came together? VINNY reminisces on a chance encounter in a setting far, far from Melbourne’s inner city suburbs.

“We had this groove and feeling in our bones. We worked throughout the night and finished the song by sunrise.” VINNY

ROZZMA Khatar Sayeb EP is out now! Watch new video for 'Gheirek'

ROZZMA Khatar Sayeb EP is out now! Watch new video for ‘Gheirek’

by the partae December 7, 2020
written by the partae
Press Credit: Mahmoud Shiha

Today Rozzma releases the Khatar Sayeb EP, the artist’s first release for XL Recordings / Remote Control Records. He celebrates the release with a brand-new video for ‘Gheirek’, directed by the artist himself for one of the standout tracks from the EP.

Rozzma is an Egyptian sound artist inspired by the era where sound preceded music – he finds inspiration in the similarities between the wilderness of prehistoric times and modern- day chaos. Having already performed his particular strain of music across the world and at festivals like Sonar and Unsound, Rozzma releases Khatar Sayeb EP.

The EP’s title Khatar Sayeb means ‘loose danger’. “The release challenges the idea that danger and fear are uncontrollable circumstances,” explains Rozzma. “We cannot fully diminish fear or danger. We can only condition ourselves to believe that safety exists during the absence of fear. It is however more dangerous to deny the uncertainty of danger itself. Danger is a very broad state with infinite circumstances. But it is also infinitely uncertain and mainly linked to luck. We do not control our luck; good or bad. And it is solely luck that dictates danger and safety. It is for that reason that one’s best chances may be to condition themselves to find comfort in danger. Loose danger to be specific.”

Rozzma’s world is one of status quos being challenged, whether that be the real world, the historical world or specifically in the world of music. Rozzma won’t let you settle with what you believe. Everything deserves to be challenged.

PINEGROVE Announce new feature film and soundtrack Amperland, NY Out Friday 15 January

by the partae December 7, 2020
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR PINEGROVE

“Pinegrove (recall) some of the most consistently likable rock bands of the past 20 years in their most easy going phases: There’s the rootsy shamble of early Wilco, the wiggly guitar solos and general guilelessness of pre-prog Built to Spill. But beneath the amiable surface is an intense work about one of the most important things imaginable: how to make our friendships really matter.” – Pitchfork

“There’s a confessional quality to the songs of Pinegrove that feels reassuring. The problems that swirl around Evan Stephens Hall’s head feel universal”  – NPR

“Pinegrove have finally cracked the code to perfecting the warbly emo-country ebullience that only they do so well. Guitars whistle with a sticky-sweet twang, Evan Hall’s striking and sentimental poetry twisting elegantly around the band’s labyrinthine compositions.” – Australian Guitar

“…this ruddy cheeked collective rekindle the guileless spirit of mid-90s alt rock (Wilco; Buffalo Tom).a surge of power-chord melancholy.” – MOJO, ★★★★

“The mournful peddle steel, keening harmonies and thumping analogue rhythms that ornament the deeply introspective songs of Marigold transform…into a vibrantly emphatic experience. The band is in peak form…ruggedly handcrafted tracks that capture charged moments in real time, just as Hall’s trenchant, minutia-filled lyrics do.” (8/10) – UNCUT

“One of the most talented recording and touring bands in the land” (8.5/10) – Under The Radar

Pinegrove have revealed details of a new feature length film, Amperland, NY, and accompanying soundtrack album to be released on Rough Trade / Remote Control on January 15th. The film, scripted from a short story by Pinegrove’s Evan Stephens Hall and directed by Kenna Hynes, was filmed at the band’s long time home in upstate New York, known as “Amperland” to Pinegrove and their fans, prior to the house being sold by the owner earlier this year. The band will screen a ticketed online premiere for fans as a fundraiser for environmental action group The Sunrise Movement on January 14th at 10am AEST for a donation of $5.00 and over. The screening will be followed by a band Q&A moderated by Busy Philipps. Tickets for the screening are available now at Pinegroveband.com along with pre-order for the soundtrack album.

The film, produced in conjunction with Chromeoscope, and described by Evan as “fun, hopefully poignant, definitely weird ”, includes 22 songs – a full set list length of performances – spanning the band’s entire career to date. Those new renditions of old gems, recorded as live in the Amperland house by Pinegrove’s Sam Skinner, will be released as a soundtrack album –  also titled Amperland, NY –  at the same time as the film. Evan explains the film as “threaded by a surreal, giddy narrative – reimaginings of our catalogue and first-time-imaginings of Pinegrovian tall tales.” The band viewed the project as a way of honoring the house that had acted as home, recording studio and important creative haven for their last two albums: Skylight (2017) and Marigold (2020). The news comes with the release of one of the songs from the project: a new live version of ‘Morningtime (Amperland, NY)’, which originally appeared on Pinegrove’s 2012’s self-released debut, Meridian, and reissued on Everything so Far (2015).

The band’s last studio album, Marigold, was released to critical acclaim in January 2020 and led the New York Times to describe them as, “The only male fronted band that matters right now.” Going on to say, “There are very few bands doing what Pinegrove are doing and connectin.”

Formed in 2010 by childhood friends Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zack Levine, Pinegrove have released four albums —Everything So Far, Cardinal, Skylight, and Marigold (2020) — to widespread critical acclaim, garnering them a growing and devoted listenership. They’ve described their sound as variously as ‘introspective party music’, or ‘energetic music in the folk tradition’; in any case, they have combined catharsis and inventive structures with irrepressible melodies, resonant lyrics and emotive twang.

Zack describes Pinegrove as “a constellation of soulmates.” Zack and Evan have known each other for 26 years and been playing music together for 21, communicating via a “telepathic musical connection.” Nearly everyone they work with are friends and collaborators from way back. Amperland, NY features Evan, Zack, Josh Marre, Megan Benavente, Sam Skinner as well as appearances from Nandi Rose,Nick Levine, Michael Levine and Doug Hall. Sam also engineered and co-produced the record, as he has on every Pinegrove recording since 2015.

TOO CLOSE TO TOUCH RELEASE I’M HARD TO LOVE BUT SO ARE YOU VOL. 4

by the partae December 7, 2020
written by the partae

Lexington, KY three-piece Too Close To Touch have dropped the fourth volume of their EP series I’m Hard To Love But So Are You.

“As we close out what has surely been one of the most difficult years for all of us, we’re both humbled and happy to bring you a new batch of songs from Too Close,” says vocalist Keaton Pierce. “I would say that this group is definitely the most diverse, and hits a pretty broad range on the spectrum of what we’ve released in the past. It feels fitting though, as this year has delivered such a wide array of emotions to everyone- Happiness, anger, sadness, hopefulness, and at times, hopelessness. As always, thank you for listening. It means the world to us, and hopefully you as well.”

The band has also released the music video for “Pick Me Up,” animated by Andrew Onorato (Billie Eilish, Childish Gambino), which you can watch, here. The track, produced and mixed by Daniel Muckala (Nick Carter, Echosmith), “relates to experiences dealing and coping with struggles and painful challenges we face,” explains the band. “There’s nothing worse than the feeling of being alone when facing the unfamiliar.  Not knowing who or what you can trust.  That period of status can make or break us, and lead to seemingly uncontrollable moments where we act out of panic and fear.”

LISTEN TO I’M HARD TO LOVE BUT SO ARE YOU, VOL. 4

Too Close To Touch is Keaton Pierce (vocals), Mason Marble (guitar), and Kenny Downey (drums).

The band’s releases include the EP series I’m Hard To Love But So Are You (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3), the songs series of “Leave You Lonely”, “Before I Cave In”, “Burn,” and their albums Nerve Endings (2015), and Haven’t Been Myself (2016).

In 2016, Too Close To Touch won the award for Best Underground Band at the Alternative Music Press Awards. Haven’t Been Myself debuted on the Billboard charts as the #3 Alternative Artist Album, #9 Top New Artist Album, and #133 Billboard Top 200 Current Album.

VANCOUVER MUSICIANS MATT STORM + IVAN HARTLE RELEASE NEW COLLAB TRACK 'MORE TO FIND'

VANCOUVER MUSICIANS MATT STORM + IVAN HARTLE RELEASE NEW COLLAB TRACK ‘MORE TO FIND’

by the partae December 6, 2020
written by the partae

Vancouver musicians Matt Storm and Ivan Hartle are excited to announce the release of their new collaborative single ‘More To Find’ out today on all digital platforms. Watch video here.

The story behind ‘More To Find’ is a serendipitous one because Matt and Ivan didn’t set out to create a collab track. In fact, it kind of happened by accident.

“I’ve been producing and recording Ivan’s music for over a year now, and he showed up at the studio one day with a long list of ‘to do’s’ for his songs in progress,” says Matt Storm. “We both sat there feeling a bit overwhelmed with the tasks ahead, so we plugged in a Wurlitzer keyboard and started jamming. Ivan started playing a riff that caught my attention that he had written it the week before. I quickly laid down a percussive rhythm on the body of an acoustic guitar, a technique I’d been toying with for a while, and it set the foundation around the keyboard. Once we had that, Ivan simply said ‘Is this our collab track?’ He could sense I was itching to get on the song. Riding the wave of inspiration, we organized melodies, wrote lyrics, and recorded the entire song in that one day.”

‘More To Find’ has a soul-influenced, laid back vibe perfect for Sunday morning playlists. But despite its chill mood, the song’s deeper meaning is a bit more heavy.

“‘More To Find’ is a song about soul searching, coming to terms with your past, and embracing the uncertainty of your future,” says Ivan Hartle. “Matt and I have similar musical tastes, so this collaboration was long overdue, and it came together with a level of spontaneity and inspiration that’s captured in the recording.”

Matt Storm and Ivan Hartle’s new single ‘More To Find’ is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit: mattstorm.ca + ivanhartlemusic.com

 MACEO PLEX – ‘CINEMAX’
MINISTRY OF SOUND & ELLUM AUDIO
OUT NOW

Maceo Plex unveils his latest single titled ‘Cinemax’. Released via Ministry Of Sound and Ellum Audio, ‘Cinemax’ is available to stream and purchase from today.

Created this year in the midst of a global pandemic and much political uncertainty, ‘Cinemax’ is the follow up single to ‘Nu World’ which saw all proceeds donated to the American Civil Liberties Union’s campaign to fight voter suppression in the 2020 US election. ‘Cinemax’ sees Maceo Plex sample Alice Russell and The Quantic Soul Orchestra’s ‘Pushin’ On’, utilising the sample to symbolise resilience and unity as we move forward into the new year.

“We are leaving the past behind. Time to unify, leave the racism and division behind us. The lyrics tell this story. The song itself is a deep chugger, always building with forwarding momentum” – Maceo Plex

Returning to Ministry Of Sound following the 2019 single, ‘When the Lights Are Out’ which received an array of media support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Billboard, Mixmag, DJ Mag and more, ‘Cinemax’ is a further exhibition of Maceo Plex’s signature studio output, fusing melodic house and brooding techno. A standout track in recent sets with fans and like-minded artists searching online for news of an official release, Alice Russell’s vocal sample is instantly recognizable and was also used on Oliver Dollar and Jimi Jules’ 2014 house hit ‘Pushing On’. Released via Defected Records and Ministry Of Sound, ‘Pushing On’ peaked at #15 in the UK singles chart

An artist who has crafted a remarkably impressive discography of productions across the sphere of electronic music and beyond, Maceo Plex’s ‘Cinemax’ follows a string of acclaimed singles / remixes this year. Highlighted by two official remixes for Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, September’s ‘Nu World’ and most recently, an official remix of Faithless’ ‘Synthesizer’.

The leading electronic producer, artist and live act, Maceo Plex’s accolades are in abundance. The figurehead behind the seminal underground label, Ellum Audio, Maceo Plex has released four studio albums, mix compilations for London’s fabric and !K7’s DJ-Kicks series, along with an impressive catalogue of productions under his Mariel Ito and Maetrik aliases. Having curated several BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix’s, headlining global festivals and gracing the cover of many a magazine from Mixmag to DJ Mag, Maceo Plex has also remixed artists including Coldcut, Röyksopp, GusGus, DJ T, Maribou State, Perry Farrell, Faithless and more. The start of 2020 also saw Maceo Plex announce plans for a new three-part, multidimensional sensory experience live show titled ‘M³’.

LISTEN HERE

BLR, The alias of renowned producer Leon Bolier shows a new side to himself in his mission to adopt a more deep, dark yet melodic club focussed sound. With his latest track ‘Limbo’ he once again proves his versatility and ability to showcase multiple facets of his musical style.

Delivering energy from the first beat, BLR wastes no time in getting down to business. Soon after the drop hits, a bouncy synth builds up to a percussion melody. A mischievous techno bass hook soon cuts through, accompanied by a bouncy synth layered with a percussion melody that proceeds to provide the hook for the duration of the track. It’s cutting-edge and hard-hitting tune while a round bassline to ensure the track.

After racking up over 10 million Spotify streams for his first-ever BLR release ‘Nungwi’, the Dutch DJ and producer continued to push a more experimental yet dancefloor friendly sound. Crossing over 100 million YouTube views with his track ‘Taj’ and releasing his 15-track journey on his debut album ‘Odyssee’ in 2019, and invites to play at festivals such as Tomorrowland and Mysteryland and club gigs all over the globe, BLR is an indispensable part of our scene.

LAKELEND RELEASES SECOND SINGLE 'SUPERNOVA'
Music News

LAKELEND returns with his second single ‘Supernova’

by the partae December 6, 2020
written by the partae

Melbourne pop artist Lakelend finally shares his second single ‘Supernova’, a nostalgic yet contrastingly futuristic project detailing the immediate intensity of falling in love.

Combining electronic beats, synthesised strings and Lakelend‘s honest vocals, ‘Supernova’ traverses through the feelings of uncertainty which is sonically juxtaposed by the overall upbeat tune of the single.

“Sometimes that new person falls into your lap when you least expect it. A breath of fresh air. Something that you haven’t experienced before”, Lakelend explains. “I was all in. Never in my life had I experienced a love for someone that built up so incredibly quickly. I think it’s only human to return love and affection if it’s received well and is something you’re capable of giving back. In hindsight there were certain moments that I was blind to everything happening around me. My close friends, my family and even my own goals and ambitions. I don’t regret it, but I’m just being honest,” details Lakelend.

Lakelend‘s previous debut single ‘Fall Down’ received high acclaim, sitting at nearly 134k streams on Spotify alone on top of praise from Australian tastemakers including Project U, auspOp ThomasBleach and more. The track also received its first play via triple j Unearthed TOPS, and landed on Spotify’s Pop ‘N Fresh and Come Thru just days after its release. Lakelend has spent the last two years collaborating with renowned producers Cam Bluff (Amy Shark, Illy, Hilltop Hoods, Allday), Xavier Dunn (Peking Duk, Graace, Jack River) and the MSquared team Michael Paynter & Michael DeLorenzis (Aloe Blacc, CXLOE) who have helped craft his distinct sound.

The single drops alongside a visualiser and to follow Lakelend will be releasing a new video clip in weeks to come.

So jump on board and take flight with Lakelend as ‘Supernova’ is only chapter two of the promising new artist. Stay tuned for more, coming soon.

DAVEY RELEASES SOULFUL NEW CUT ‘I FALL FEAT. AALOK BALA’ DEBUT SELF-TITLED EP OUT NOW

“Frenetic, intense and chaotic electro cuts which thrash, heave and go the fuck off over and over again”
Purple Sneakers

davey, the solo project of Vallis Alps‘ David Ansari, today officially releases his self-titled debut EP. Listen to the davey EP HERE and watch the visualizer for the new focus track ‘I Fall ft. Aalok Bala‘ HERE.

With a dedication to impulsivity and creative recklessness, davey is a reflection of everything David was consuming during that time. An amorphous project that encompasses subterranean techno (‘N.I.4.N.I‘, ‘SOIL FOR THE ORCHIDS‘), industrial hip hop (‘NOT ME ft. Sol‘), deconstructed glitch pop (‘CONTROL 2002‘, ‘LIFE OF PIG‘), cathartic, soul-infused house (‘I Fall feat. Aalok Bala’) and more. Feeling burnt out from years of touring and multiple transcontinental moves, the project began taking shape when Ansari returned to the studio, loosely playing around with beats as he learned how to have fun with music again.

Of the duo’s collaboration, davey shares that “I Fall is an outlier on the EP, both musically and conceptually – while the rest of the EP explores the chaos around us, this song is about making sense of what’s within. And it’s fitting, given how much ‘I Fall’ pummeled me creatively – I spent two years throwing ideas at the wall and went through vocal after vocal trying to find the right collaborator. But something about Aalok’s voice was just different – she wrote this melody that brought a sense of timelessness to the track, something that is so rare in electronic music these days.” Aalok Bala explains further, “I Fall offers an inside look into the inner dialogue and conflict of following your intuition.”

From his training in jazz piano to the musical education of his formative high school years, in which he developed an omnivorous appetite for all things weird and chaotic, davey is energised by what he calls “this adrenaline element that I crave in everything I listen to.” A reflection of the stresses that were consuming him at the time, David began engineering his sounds to feel dark and gritty. Building stark beats around found fragments and aural artifacts with competitive instrumentals undergirding them, davey hit upon a dormant sense of aggression.

“Everything coalesced at the right time. I was in the studio with no expectations, no deadlines, no rules. So I spent a lot of time experimenting with synths and FM radios, and seeing how far I could degrade sound quality until everything became unusable. Meanwhile, I was adjusting to being back in the states, with all of its idiosyncrasies, and trying to wrap my head around why it sort of felt like I was stepping back into a burning building. So the whole EP came together from sampling news broadcasts and making beats around reporters talking about climate change, or the VMA’s, or whatever,” he explains of his debut self-titled EP

The result of those sessions, his self-titled debut EP, holds a mirror up to the absurdity surrounding him. ‘I Fall‘ marks the EP’s cathartic release with LA-based, Chilean-American experimental artist Aalok Bala providing a memorable vocal backdrop to glitchy, manipulated samples, coarse percussion, and a bass-line that lingers in your chest long past its drop. Like tinkering with a toolbox, Ansari transforms ‘I Fall‘ into a banger that represents every step of his journey thus far – throwing the rulebook away after years spent adhering to the precise and rigid rules of pop songwriting, piecing together elements that shouldn’t work but now do.

Though he didn’t set out to create an intentionally angry record, the energy that animates davey is a reflection of what he saw when he surveyed his own environment, a jarring exercise in raw, minimal musical potency that’s constantly fighting against both itself and its creator. In this way, the project represents a return to David’s roots – and a step forward at the same time.
