BIGSOUND, produced by Qmusic, continues its support and dedication to opening more spaces for First Nations music, dialogues, and community connection in 2020 and beyond with the announcement of this year’s First Nations House, a unique partnership with Spotify as part of their ongoing commitment to promote and increase the representation of First Nations artists from around the globe, on and off their platform.
Launching today and remaining open for the next 12 months, BIGSOUND’s First Nations House will be a safe and dedicated 100% virtual global meeting space for supporting, promoting and celebrating First Nations music from around the world, including hosting workshops and performances, and a platform for artists to gather and share their music and messages.
“Against the backdrop of the pandemic we have seen significant impact to the music industry with the impact to First Nations artists disproportionate,” said Jonathan Harrison, Artist & Label Partnerships Manager, Spotify Australia & New Zealand

“Now more than ever, our commitment to increasing the representation of First Nations artists on the Spotify platform, and off, is crucial. We are extremely proud to advocate for Indigenous music through our partnership with BIGSOUND to bring First Nations House back to this year’s event. By providing a space to nurture and support Indigenous music, we can showcase the creativity and diversity of First Nations artists, driving broader engagement within the music industry.”
Through the partnership with Spotify, the BIGSOUND First Nations House programming will be BIGSOUND’s premiere musical performance event with its series of exclusive Dreaming Loud Showcases. Eight selected artists will perform a filmed on country showcase performance nightly on Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd October, including: Aodhan, Birdz, CLOE TERARE, Kee’ahn, Matalja, Oetha, Southeast Desert Metal and The Yorke Band.
Following the final showcase, the entertainment will continue with a Dreaming Loud DJ set featuring special guest Dameeeela. The digital platform will also spotlight the 22 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from The BIGSOUND50.

There will also be a special performance presentation by Indigenous Music West at Manitoba Music. Filmed in Treaty 1 Territory (Winnipeg) and the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keh:ka of Kahnawà:ke (Montréal), Indigenous North will offer electrifying performances and interviews for an intimate picture of outstanding artists from those regions, including Celeigh Cardinal, acclaimed country singer/songwriter Don Amero, Inuk singer/songwriter Elisapie, and multi-instrumentalist R&B artist Sebastian Gaskin.

BIGSOUND First Nations House is also honoured to feature artwork by Dylan Mooney: a Yuwi man from Mackay, central Queensland, Torres Strait Islander from Darnley Island and Badu Island and Australian born South Sea Islander. “This artwork represents the importance of music for Indigenous peoples,” said Dylan, “our people create songs to tell stories, to share our cultural knowledge and to bring awareness to the wider community.”

The newly-added BIGSOUND First Nations House programming sits alongside the already-announced First Nations conference program line up in what is an outstanding and unique representation of the music, voices, conversations and issues faced by Indigenous and First Nations communities and artists today.

“As the industry re-futures, it is imperative that spaces like BIGSOUND and Spotify support, promote and celebrate Indigenous artists and the music they make,” said First Nations Producer and Programmer, Alethea Beetson.

“In a time where there has been a resurgence of Black Lives Matter, which has long been the Black Deaths in Custody movement in so-called Australia, the BIGSOUND First Nations conversations address the issues of systemic racism in the music industry by offering Indigenous led solutions to some of the now common problems we are facing in 2020, and beyond.”

Included in the conference program, Kev Carmody will host a keynote presentation titled “Cannot Buy My Soul”; Ziggy Ramo and Rhoda Roberts will discuss the future of the music industry from a place of sovereignty, truth-telling and change for “100% BLAK: The Indigenous Future Of The Music Industry”.

“Beyond the Black Tile” will feature Dameeeela, Busty Beatz and more for an honest discussion between people of colour and the music sector about performative allyship and real reparations from the music industry with pathways and suggestions on how to dismantle and reform the systems from within; and “Cultural Resurgence” will tackle the importance of storytelling and culture in and through music with artists Dr Lou Bennett, Gina Williams, Jeremy Dutcher and Thomas E.S. Kelly.

Other BIGSOUND First Nations Conversations include: “Pay The Rent; Can ‘Quotas’ Lead to Reparations?“, a Keynote with “Maimouna Youssef AKA Mumu Fresh“, “Rest Is Revolution: When Self-Care Is More Than A Buzzword, It Is Survival“, and “Community>Industry: The Application Of Indigenous Knowledges in the Music Sector“.

BAD RELIGION RELEASE NEW TRACK ‘WHAT ARE WE STANDING FOR’

written by the partae

Preeminent Los Angeles band Bad Religion have just released “What Are We Standing For,” an outtake from the band’s critically acclaimed 2019 album Age Of Unreason. The song is one of support and compassion for professional athletes, and others, whom have taken a knee to protest police brutality and racism.

Bad Religion have always advocated for humanism, reason, and individualism, which in our current political climate is a message that has never been more essential. “In this time of tribal nationalism, dissent, as a form of political speech, is vital to democracy,” says co-songwriter and guitarist Brett Gurewitz.

Where are you currently based?

Melbourne.

How did you first start playing music?

I started playing violin when i was three years old and piano when I was four (my parents are musicians).

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

I’ve been working on this EP which is finished now! And covering songs, making videos for them and releasing them on YouTube. Oddly enough my Covid experience has been really great, allowing me to essentially work on music full time.

What influenced the sound and songwriting for your new single “25”?

Being introduced to The 1975 definitely has a big influence on 25, specifically their honest and revealing approach to lyricism.

How do you usually for about writing music?

I’ll basically just sit down in my studio and start tinkering with different instruments. Eventually I’ll come up with a melody or polyrhythmic synth line and just build on top of that.

What programs/instruments do you use?

I use Logic as my DAW and then in the synth department I use a Juno-106, Behringer Model-D, Prophet 08, Nord Electro 3, Bass Station 2, Arturia V Collection. Maschine and Spark take care of the drums, and then use a Neumann TLM 103 mic to record all my vocals, violin, percussion.

How do you approach recording/production?

I approach the recording aspect by mucking around in the studio and then once I’ve got a a demo of a track, I’ll go back and do proper vocal takes etc. and then send it off for mixing. I used to mix everything myself but over the last couple of years I’ve been very fortunate to have my very talented friend and other half of Juno Disco Nick Bond take care of it and it’s really taken everything to another level.

Please tell us about the upcoming video, how was it filmed and where?

I was very influenced by how they filmed The Mandalorian by their use of rear screen projection with giant screens. So I experimented with making visuals then putting them on my TV and then would shoot a single take of myself performing in front of it.

Please tell us about how you got into videography:

Filmmaking is something I did a bit in High School but hadn’t really touched it again since lockdown. I started making these videos for the covers I was making and then through doing so many of them, I got better at filmmaking.

It’s something I really love and will continue to do, the process is very similar to making music.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

The only new thing I’ve really gotten into recently is Parcels, such an amazing band and was very excited to hear that they’re big Whitest Boy Alive fans. That and The Weekly Planet podcast which is 11/10.

What do you like to do away from music?

Very lucky to have a park as my backyard so hanging out there, Watching movies, I’m watching The Sopranos for the first time and  I’ve gotten weirdly into running this year.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?

More music! You’ll be hearing some new stuff from me very soon! The EP is done so I’ll be bringing out another single and the EP before the end of they year. And then I’ll work on my next release over the summer. We also have a lot of Juno Disco stuff in the pipeline which is exciting so I reckon it’ll be a busy 2021.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Without a doubt ‘Leonards House Of Love’.

FOJAM PRESENTS LADIES WHO SING LEONARD
A LEONARD COHEN TRIBUTE EVENT
SATURDAY 7 NOVEMBER, 8.30PM – 10PM (ONLINE)
Presented by Triple R

“It’s been 20 years since I fell hard for the words of Leonard Cohen and the pictures he painted. It’s also been 20 years since I wanted to make my life about music, art and poetry. This project is inspired by my (sometimes confused) Jewish heritage, the spirit of my homeland and all the sex, love and death that falls in between. Leonard Cohen taught me that art can change the lives of the people around you.”
– Anita Lester, FOJAM Curator

Immersive contemporary cultural festival, Festival of Jewish Arts and Music (FOJAM) returns in 2020, showcasing an immense spread of local and international artists through the lens of Jewish culture and identity. Following the success of its inaugural event of last year, this year’s live festival has had to adapt to the current global COVID-19 restrictions and has translocated from the streets to the clouds, with its 2020 Homeward Bound online series. Continuing the celebrations of Jewish music, performance, dance, talks, storytelling and creativity, the virtual series seeks to spark discussion, empathy and curiosity through thought provoking panel discussions, live streamed performances and bespoke online events. A nod to the famed Jewish duo Simon and Garfunkel, the monthly series has been taking place over the past six months and is ready to reach its season finale with the unmissable Ladies Who Sing Leonard concert.

Coinciding with the four-year anniversary of his passing, the Leonard Cohen tribute concert will feature Ninet Tayeb (ISRAEL), Kate Ceberano, Katie Noonan, Deborah Conway, Kylie Auldist, Emily Lubitz, Gabriella Cohen, Emma Donovan, Kee’ahn, Loretta Miller (Jazz Party), Melody Pool, Imogen Clark, Alma & Hettie Zygier, Tamara Reichman (Tamara & the Dreams), Sophia Tuv and an in-conversation with Anita Lester. The impressive lineup of dynamic artists will weave Leonard’s words around their own unique narratives in an immersive and transcendental tribute like no other.

“We are absolutely thrilled to present this divine tribute show on the anniversary of Leonard Cohen’s death. His work has had, and continues to have, such a deep impact on so many artists and people around the world. It’s particularly poignant that we will work to connect through his music at a time that has left so many feeling isolated and disconnected.” – Lior Albeck-Ripka, Artistic Director

“I have always seen the woman beneath his stories and it was important to me, when putting a tribute together, to truly embody his work, not simply focused on who can sing the songs the best.”
– Anita Lester, Curator

“We really want this to be an immersive experience despite the digital limitations and are hoping we can create a feeling of connection between audiences and artists.”
 – Lior Albeck-Ripka, Artistic Director

FOJAM launched their Homeward Bound series back in June with the hugely successful online event Unorthodox: Stories of Escape, which brought together Unorthodox author, Deborah Feldman, trans-activist and author of Becoming Eve, Abby Stein and local activist and soon to be published author Dassi Erlich, in a live panel discussion to dissect the series and their own personal journeys of exodus. Since then, the FOJAM series has clocked over 6000 online attendees on a ‘pay what you can’ basis, to create access for those, not in a position to pay for their tickets. In the series’ next online experience, Ladies Who Sing Leonard will take place on Saturday 7 November via Zoom in honour of an exceptional Jewish figure and creative whose legacy has left its mark far and wide.

“We know there are many in the community who want to support the arts. By choosing to purchase a ticket at a level they are comfortable with, audiences can continue to show their support for the festival and the artists. FOJAM will continue its commitment to delivering high quality events and always paying artists.” – Jesse Lubitz, Festival Producer

About FOJAM
Founded five years ago as Shir Madness in Melbourne by ARIA award winning legend Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier, the Jewish music and arts festival reinvented itself in 2019 under the direction of Lior Albeck-Ripka and Jesse Lubitz, founders of Melbourne independent events and artist management agency, Hear Them Holler. The festival saw 1,500 people enjoy a dynamic swathe of music concerts, contemporary dance, drag performances, storytelling and talk series at Melbourne Recital Centre over 12 hours, in September last year. In May 2020, FOJAM announced they would be presenting a series of online events called Homeward Bound. They have had between 1,000 – 3,000 people register for each of their major online events. This is their fourth major online event.

HACHIKU Releases single + video ‘Bridging Visa B’ Debut album I’ll Probably Be Asleep out Nov 13

by the partae October 15, 2020
written by the partae
PRAISE FOR HACHIKU

“With a full LP incoming, ‘I’ll Probably Be Asleep’ is a potent slice of escapist guitar pop with a literate feel.” – Clash

“‘I’ll Probably Be Asleep’ cradles you with a familiar nocturnal warmth but strips it back to more sparse, uncertain realms. It’s an intoxicating listen which shows that – hot take – our Court’s got a pretty decent ear.” – DIY

“Although a bigger, full-band sound is in place, “I’ll Probably Be Asleep” still maintains the intimacy expected from Hachiku. Her soft-edged voice is fluffy amidst the warm layers of synths, and we can imagine her contemplating her position in the world from the comfort of her own bed.” – Beats Per Minute

Following last month’s announcement of Hachiku‘s forthcoming debut album I’ll Probably Be Asleep, Anika Ostendorf returns with its second single ‘Bridging Visa B’. Premiered by Visions, it’s a tale of being left in bureaucratic limbo. On the surface, the track exudes breezy delight with Hachiku‘s trademark production of elastic guitars, Casio drum beats and gentle vocals but beneath lies a concern that the validity of your romantic relationship—not to mention your fate—is in the hands of the authorities.

Ostendorf says, “A Bridging Visa B is the visa that you need to apply for every time you want to leave Australia while waiting for your permanent visa application to be processed. For me it represents the whole frustration of going through the quite intrusive visa application process and all the obnoxious government officials that think they have the right to ask you about your private business.

And I am super privileged as a white person from a Western country where I actually unfairly receive a very special immigrant treatment. I can’t imagine how dehumanising this whole process must feel like being a refugee or person of colour. I’m lucky I ticked all the right boxes for them, it’s outraging to think what power they have over you when you are in a desperate position.”

For the video, Anika collaborated again with director Mickey Manson who had previously made Hachiku’s ‘Shark Attack’ video. Manson says, “I had just started doing Bob Ross tutorials on YouTube with oil paints and the process with his ‘happy little worlds’ seemed to fit well with Anika’s song. Having emigrated to Australia myself there is some kind of wonderland that you build up in your head and that’s what I tried to express in this clip. But like any fantasy land the dream can all sort of fall apart as you get glimpses of the inevitable underbelly of life there.”

‘Bridging Visa B’ is lifted from the album I’ll Probably Be Asleep which was recorded in countless locations from houses in Australia and Germany to backyard sheds, rehearsal rooms, and the Milk! warehouse. “It’s like a big puzzle, piecing together these randomly-recorded sounds,” Ostendorf says; offering that she thinks of herself “more as a producer than a songwriter”. I’ll Probably Be Asleep which is out November 13th on Milk! Records / Remote Control Records.

Today Portland duo Reptaliens announce their forthcoming EP Wrestling out November 6 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control Records. Along with the announce, the duo share their first single, 'Taking,' with a lyric video overlaid on top of the eerie deep red Oregon skies during the wildfires, posing the question “are we existing?” Watch video here.  Reptaliens on 'Taking' - "'Taking' is about perception and existence. It’s a song that carries the listener through the balance between action and perspective inherent throughout the human experience.  Deviating from our traditional ‘reptaliens sound’ we chose to create a collection of darker songs with which to play on this reoccurring theme. The video was shot while crossing the California/Oregon border a month ahead of the single release. The chaos that wildfires have brought to the west coast seemed to encompass the visual juxtaposition between the darkness and light that nature brings."   Reptaliens’ Wrestling EP differs in two major ways from the groups previous releases: It is the first recording project engineered, produced, and mixed entirely by the songwriting duo of Bambi and Cole Browning. Also, it stylistically differs greatly from anything the band has released before, resulting in a darker and more emotive sound, opting for the heavy use of synths and drum machines in lieu of guitars and drum kits, and paying homage to the minimal wave sound of electronic post-punk.   The Wrestling EP, written and recorded throughout July 2020, was first conceived after Bambi and Cole borrowed the classic Roland SH-2 bass synth from Josh Hodges (STRFKR) during a time in which the three musicians were working on collaborative projects and tracking on each other’s respective projects. Initially, the songs were thought of as an independent exploration into different genres, or the potential beginnings of a side project, until Bambi, Cole, and Captured Tracks decided to release the four tracks under the Reptaliens moniker.   After the completion of Wrestling, Bambi and Cole moved to a self-sustaining, off-the-grid farm to continue work on the band’s third LP, and to further explore new musical genres with which to expand the high concept world of Reptaliens. NERVE DROPS CHEEKY RAP TRACK ‘REECE’S PEECES’

PRAISE FOR NERVE

Best Australian Rappers in 2020
Red Bull Music

“Brisbane’s golden child of grime”
Acclaim

“Nerve’s a force now too big to be reckoned with”
Purple Sneakers

“One of the best in Aus right now”
Declan Byrne, triple j

Brisbane artist Nerve returns with his new single ‘Reece’s Peeces‘, a tongue-in-cheek slapper that shows the rapper/producer/engineer at his formidable, infectious best. Listen HERE, watch HERE.

‘Reece’s Peeces‘ is another display of Nerve‘s preference for rapping about food (See his breakout single ‘Sunday Roast‘, added to high rotation on triple j) as well as his ability to deliver witty punchlines and tightly-wound bars with effortless ease. With a thorough history in Australia’s grime and hip-hop scenes, Nerve has long proven his ability to spit over different styles and tempos, with ‘Reece’s Peeces‘ offering a sparse beat that’s disrupted by earth-shattering 808s and bass. The instrumental was cooked up by Nerve himself in five minutes, with the minimal production allowing his commanding vocals to take the driver’s seat.

Of the video, Nerve shares, “We wanted to create something that represented as much of our experience with various Australian subcultures as possible. So naturally, we had a massive food fight, went skydiving, rode horses and practised BDSM.”

Lyrically, ‘Reece’s Peeces‘ is rap bravado in Nerve‘s trademark larrikin style, seeing him take cheeky jabs at opponents while serving up his message of self-confidence: “Pull up your socks, this is a bop,” the hook states. “Be a boss. Fix up. Do whatever you want and do it better than anybody else. It’s healthy to be confident,” Nerve says. “You gotta be your own biggest fan these days, because everybody wants to knock you down a peg, especially in Australia.”

‘Reece’s Peeces‘ by Nerve is out now via Believe, buy/stream it here.

Musically, every shade of house and disco is covered in real style. First up is New York legend Roger Sanchez, who has helped shape the underground sound for decades on vital labels like Strictly Rhythm, his own Stealth and Ministry of Sound. Coming off the back of his Top 5 Chart hit with Diplo, Paul Woolford also lines up with his broad house sound, which covers everything from peak time anthems to vocal gems and deeper cuts, while Artwork always brings the energy as a long time party starter who has an unveiled knowledge of how to move a floor.
Hannah Wants is the headliner to see for those who like their house with some seriously earth shattering bass, and Krystal Klear is a fellow contemporary trendsetter who runs the label Cold Tonic and has released on Running Back, Madtech and more while heading cult underground clubs all over the planet. With Defected associate and high energy selector Sam Divine, hit making bass, house and garage outfit Low Steppa as well as La La, Mambo Brothers, Weiss, Philip George, Menendez Brothers and residents such as Ben Read, Chris Thomas, Dale Castell, DEZ and LUCiD all playing, One Out Festival is all set to make a spectacular and unforgettable debut.

Where are you currently based? Melbourne. What's been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far? We’ve started writing songs about extra terrestrial life because there’s nothing going on worth singing about on planet earth. How did Groove City form? Cal’s previous band had just broken up and he was looking for someone to funk down with… who else was he gonna call? Your new track 'This Evening' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? We’d been loving Mayer Hawthornes latest releases. He seems to have figured out how to make break up songs sound upbeat and funky. We were going for that vibe with This Evening. Where and when did you record? We recorded it all in the studio we have in our house which is lucky because unfortunately a lot of other musicians in Melbourne can’t get into places to lay new tunes down. How did you approach the recording process? We have it down to quite a fast process now. Once the song is fleshed out enough to put it into the computer, we usually try not to spend more than one or two initial sessions to get everything in. Then sit on it for a few weeks and make little tweaks here and there until we get what everyone else hears. Who are you listening to at the moment? Mayer Hawthorne, Djo, Frank Sinatra, billie eilish. What do you like to do away from music? Cal loves making Coffee, Dan loves roller skating & we have both been playing ping pong between studio sessions. Favourite food and place to hangout? The last bag of rice from the Coles down the road & we are loving hanging out anywhere within our 5km radius.

Where are you currently based?

Melbourne.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been so far?

We’ve started writing songs about extra terrestrial life because there’s nothing going on worth singing about on planet earth.

How did Groove City form?

Cal’s previous band had just broken up and he was looking for someone to funk down with… who else was he gonna call?

Your new track ‘This Evening’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

KING STINGRAY SIGN TO BARGAIN BIN RECORDS + RELEASE DEBUT SINGLE ‘HEY WANHAKA’ . YOTHU YINDI PROGENY CONTINUE IMPRESSIVE MUSICAL LEGACY

Brand new Yolŋu surf-rock band, King Stingray release their debut single Hey Wanhaka today via Bargain Bin Records.

King Stingray are a four piece from Yirrkala, North-East Arnhem Land. Formed by Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (nephew of the late Dr M Yunupiŋu – Yothu Yindi frontman) and Roy Kellaway (son of Stu Kellaway – Yothu Yindi founding member and bass player), King Stingray blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a genre of their own, Yolŋu surf-rock.

Premiering this past Sunday on triple j’s 2020 with Richard Kingsmill, their debut single Hey Wanhaka is a playful song about finding love in the city. Written in both English and Yolŋu Matha, the band integrate the traditional Yolŋu manikay (traditional song-line) of the Lorrpu (white cockatoo) into a groove heavy, indie rock song. Travelling around the place like a cockatoo, “Hey Wanhaka” literally means “Hey, where you going?”.

“A seriously exciting debut from King Stingray!” – Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

“…An instant classic” – Claire Mooney, triple j Unearthed (5 stars)

The Chats caught wind of the band just in time to snap them up for their own label, Bargain Bin Records. “I’m bloody stoked to have King Stingray on board the Bargain Bin train (it’s a crazy train, like the Ozzy Osbourne song)” says The Chats frontman Eamon Sandwith “I’m very much looking forward to seeing them grow as a band and I can’t wait till we can hit the road and do some shows together!”.

King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship, of two cultures coming together. From toddlers in the Yothu Yindi tour entourage in the 90s, to fully fledged Yothu Yindi members today, Yirrŋa (current lead singer of Yothu Yindi) and Roy (current guitarist of Yothu Yindi and Emily Wurramara) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember. King Stingray seamlessly blends Yirrŋa’s timeless Yolŋu manikay vocals with Roy’s indie pop credentials (Mary Handsome, Django George).

Young multi-instrumentalist Dimathaya Burarrwanga joins the King Stingray line-up on drums and percussion, with Campbell Messer taking care of bass and back up vocals.

Determined to follow in the grand footsteps of their parents in Yothu Yindi, King Stingray are the new generation, celebrating indigenous culture and multiculturalism through music.

Perth indie-folk group JACK DAVIES and THE BUSH CHOOKS announce new EP ‘SONGS FOR A LONG WALK’ out October 23rd Band releases new single ‘LOVING YOU’S LIKE A MOULDY CUP OF TEA’

A natural storyteller, Perth’s Jack Davies returns with his band, The Bush Chooks, with a brand new collection of music to wrap listeners up and soothe.

Their new single, ‘Loving You’s Like A Mouldy Cup Of Tea’, is the latest from their forthcoming EP Songs For A Long Walk; tailor-made for those seeking warmth and solace in their indie-folk music. The band blends harmonies with gorgeous melodies and with Davies’ old-soul style of lyricism, the effect of the music cannot be understated.

As the EP opener, ‘…Mouldy Tea’ is the perfect introduction to the Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks sound. A band who is effortlessly comfortable on record together, the WA group have been emerging as a strong act out west for some time now. Their new single is a definitive release from the group: the lyricism is earnest, while the arrangement of the music speaks to the heart of the band’s love for folk and country tones.

“For me, the song really grounds the rest of the EP. It feels true to how the songs have been written, sitting out the front of my house, singing it for the first time with George and Elise jamming along. Hector playing a little toy accordion, half the notes bust…it’s just a very homely song. A different perspective on the rest of the EP.” Jack Davies

Jack Davies and The Bush Chooks have been garnering acclaim for their music around the country, while also attracting industry praise too, having a WAM and SOTY award to their name, as well as a National Live Music Award for WA’s Best Live Act.

The past couple of months have seen the band return to performing to sold out crowds across the state, as restrictions continue to ease in Western Australia.

PRAISE FOR JACK DAVIES AND THE BUSH CHOOKS

“Every so often a voice captures a moment in time. Slow, melodic and deliberate song writing that evokes quintessential West Australian imagery, Jack Davies is the voice of a new generation of Perth storytellers.”

RTRFM 92.1

“Jack is a special one. He and his coop spin a web of verbiage that you don’t mind getting tangled up in.”

Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“I was thinking to myself today, wondering who of the modern Australian songwriters writing gentle, folk inspired songs have what it takes to be remembered in the long term, and I reckon Jack might be one of them. His songs cut straight to the core and put you in a time and place you didn’t know you were missing.”

THE WILDERNESS RELEASE SPOOKY VIDEO FOR THEIR LATEST SINGLE 'GRAVEYARD'

THE WILDERNESS RELEASE SPOOKY VIDEO FOR THEIR LATEST SINGLE ‘GRAVEYARD’

by the partae October 14, 2020
written by the partae
Today, indie rockers The Wilderness share the video for ‘Graveyard’, the 3rd single from their new album  Until Tomorrow which was released on August 21st.

Both the song and video for ‘Graveyard’ revolve around the theme of feeling trapped in a cyclical, dead-end lifestyle, and that one day you may close your eyes and wake up 20 years later in the same exact place. The video, directed by Céline Klein and starring band members Jonas Lewis-Anthony and Liam Neale, is filmed in black and white and has an old school thriller/horror vibe to it.

Since there are parts of ‘Graveyard’ that have the infectious lightness of a pop song, the band wanted to make sure that the video hammered home the very serious, dark themes of the lyrics.

“With this video we wanted to create something that captured both the driving energy and intensity of the music, while still relating to the paranoid self-reflection of the lyrics,” says Liam Neale.

Although they all currently reside in Kingston, ON, The Wilderness are a truly international band composed of a Brit, a Frenchman, two Americans, and two Canadians. Formed in 2015, the band have released plenty of music thus far, including: an album Until Tomorrow (2020), an EP Seminary Road (2018), and five singles  – ‘Pick You Up’ (2020), ‘Virginia Sapphire’ (2019), ‘Fall (Despite What You Do)’ (2019), ‘Dancing In The Dive Bars’ (2018), and ‘Hurry Up And Wait’ (2018).

The Wilderness – Until Tomorrow is available now on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, and other digital retailers and streaming services worldwide. For more information, please visit: thewildernessband.com

THE WILDERNESS IS:
Jonas Lewis-Anthony (lead vocals + guitar)
Sacha Lansky (lead guitar + backing vocals)
Karl Tombak (bass)
Henry Lawrence (drums + backing vocals)
Nicholas Lennox (saxophone, percussion + backing vocals)
Liam Neale (keyboard + percussion)

GROOVE CITY DROP NEW POP-DISCO SINGLE 'THIS EVENING'

GROOVE CITY DROP NEW POP-DISCO SINGLE ‘THIS EVENING’

by the partae October 13, 2020
written by the partae

“Groove City are a down-under version of Chromeo that we are vibing… [they’ll] satisfy your deepest darkest disco desires.”
Pilerats

“Capitalising on acts before them like Total Giovanni or even very early Client Liaison, yet putting their own spin on it, Groove City are sitting on a treasure trove of tunes that will make you feel good inside and out.”
Purple Sneakers

“Injecting a sorely-needed dose of unadulterated funk into our local scene, Daniel Andaloro and Calum Mawson have spent the last 12 months fulfilling a mission handed down to them by the disco gods themselves: bless this wholly unprepared world with straight-up baby makin’ slow jams.”
Best Before

After making some serious noise in the Australian club scene with their interactive DJ set and lavish outfits, the GC boys landed themselves a few big festival slots that quickly turned the DJ set into a multi-layered Disco experience.

Since then, they’ve gone on to sell out venues around the country in the form of ‘Groove City’s Disco Deluxe’. Fast forward 18 months, and GC have supported acts such as Flight Facilities, Confidence man, Client Liaison, Total Giovanni, Bag Raiders, Sneaky Sound System & more.

Whilst being locked down in Victoria this year, the boys have kept busy in the studio releasing a 3-track cover EP titled, ‘Survival’ and are now ready to unleash this punchy new single, ‘This Evening’ to the world. They also managed to accrue over 100k likes on their TikTok since starting an account in July.

They were forced to get extra creative with the visuals for this track as they were in Stage-4 lockdown and couldn’t go out to film in any locations. They got busy with brainstorming an original concept they hadn’t seen before, bought a green screen from eBay and got to work. You can watch it here – and be sure to watch from your phone!

Groove City have solidified themselves as a one-stop-shop for generating Studio 54-esque dancefloors, and curating the vibe of the party as soon as they walk through the door.

BAD SUNS RELEASE NEW SONG “BABY BLUE SHADES”

by the partae October 13, 2020
written by the partae

Los Angeles-based modern alt-rock band Bad Suns have released their new standout single “Baby Blue Shades.” The track sees the band return to longtime producer Eric Palmquist, who worked with Bad Suns on their first two records.

“’Baby Blue Shades’ was one of those songs sent from the cosmos without a moment’s warning,” says vocalist Christo Bowman “Extracted from a feeling of helplessness and desperation, following hours of unfruitful labor, the music came right to my hands and out of my mouth in a flash, along with a sense of euphoria. That cycle of emotions is exactly what you hear in this song.”

The band unveil the vibrant and fun music video for the track directed by Logan Rice.

Since forming in Los Angeles County in 2012, Bad Suns have garnered an impressive following including over 1.5M monthly Spotify listeners, sold out headlining dates across the globe, played countless marquee festivals, and released three full-length records; Language & Perspective (2014), Disappear Here (2016), and Mystic Truth (2019).

Bad Suns is Christo Bowman (vocals/guitar), Gavin Bennett (bass), Miles Morris (drums) and Ray Libby (guitar).
