Bringing some dreamy chillwave-flecked R&B into our lives this month, US duo Sports announce their new single, ‘Baby Baby’. Releasing their first single for 2020 back in May with ‘Tell You Something’, the band began to gear up in introducing fans to their new chapter. ‘Baby Baby’ sees the band continue to experiment with influences and direction, delivering a single that brings psych influences together with R&B and dream-pop threads, making for an insatiable listen. Recorded this year at Oklahoma’s Blackwatch Studios with Chad Copelin (LANY, Sufjan Stevens), ‘Baby Baby’ came together following songwriting sessions where Sports’ Cale Chronister took the idea of codependency and the emotions surrounding it, and brought them into Sports’ unique musical world.  “‘Baby Baby’ is about codependency. My emotions being dependent on someone else’s emotions. It’s about a vicious cycle of not being able to comfort someone who is crying, and their crying ending up making me more upset than they are.” Cale Chronister, Sports As he explains, ‘Baby Baby’ focuses on ego and inner struggle - it stands out as a personal monologue, set to a beautifully produced soundtrack. “In the verses of the song I’m expressing my frustration with being unable to be comforting, and in the chorus I end up asking for comfort. It’s a messed up cycle that I find myself. The ego placing itself where it doesn’t belong. As the song goes on, that last chorus gets more emotional, and the same lyrics can be heard as actual empathy. As if something clicked and I felt your pain and cried with you; instead of just trying to make myself feel better.” Cale Chronister, Sports With a sound that evokes the likes of Client Liaison, MGMT and Empire of The Sun, Sports have been meticulously creating their sonic space since their 2015 debut album Naked All The Time.  Complimenting the psych influences and dreamy RnB tones of the single is the newly released music video for ‘Baby Baby’. Rich in unusual visuals and a haunting aesthetic, the clip goes between a moody underground scene that evokes melancholia before rising worldside to indulge in reminiscence of  troubled past love. Having a powerful connection with the single, working with Mortis Studios to bring Sports’ vision to life was a rewarding experience for the duo.  “In the video for Baby Baby, we’re trapped in this underworld communicating to a lush world above filled with troubling memories and relationships. Yet, I think we’re longing for it. It seems appealing compared to the world below -- a small, decaying room with nothing to do but watch TV and mope around. To me, it mirrors the world we’re in today. But it also mirrors the lyrics in the song, which is about codependency in relationships. The underworld could represent my subconscious, I suppose.” Cale Chronister.  Currently made up of Chronister and Christian Theriot, Sports have been unafraid of playing with tones and delving further into textural experiments as their music has evolved over subsequent releases. Consistently releasing music and developing for themselves a strong live presence in the years that followed, the band has become an eclectic musical force in the US, now setting their sights on further growing their Australian fan base. PRAISE FOR SPORTS “An effortless crossover between the smooth synths of Tame Impala and the timeless pop hooks of David Bowie, ‘Tell You Something’ is a perfectly mellow introduction to a new era for alternative pop outfit Sports.” Earmilk “You’ll be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable kind of sonic sci-fi than Oklahoma duo Sports’ blend of inky, psychedelic R&B with indie rock from the South West.” Pigeons & Planes “...a dizzying display of chillwave and funkish proficiency.” Atwood Magazine ‘Baby Baby’ is released Friday, October 16th. US indie duo SPORTS impress with chilled out new single ‘BABY BABY’

Citizen Kay – Unveils Powerful Accompanying Video Clip For Single ‘Don’t Blink’

SUPPORT FOR ‘DON’T BLINK’

“You’ll want to have both eyes on the screen at all times when watching this video.”
–  Cool Accidents (AUS)

“With pummeling guitar, formidable bars and a hard-hitting, swaggering bass, ‘Don’t Blink’ is a total heater.”
–  Purple Sneakers (AUS)

Added to Apple Music playlist ‘New Music Daily’

Following on from the release of his critically praised single ‘Don’t Blink’, Canberra-based hip hop artist Citizen Kay has just revealed the accompanying video clip – directed and edited by long-time collaborator Nic Vevers.

Filmed at the top of a carpark in the heart of Canberra City, the clip sees a dynamic performance from Citizen Kay, mixed with the exquisite work of Canberra animator Trent Dwyer. Through the playful use of light and sped up camera techniques, Vevers highlights the contrast between the still, barren carpark and the frenetic rendition from Kay.

Citizen Kay talks about the inspiration and process behind the video clip:

“After working with Nic for so long, I’ve come to trust him completely and am hella confident of his work. We had this dope idea of a one-shot, slow panning, cinematic, minimalistic video which went right out the window. Instead, we ended up making this mostly spontaneous clip that you see which reflects the song so damn well! The animation represents subliminal internal thoughts which oppose a lot of the aggression throughout the track, and the visuals and a gritty style just came out so naturally when shooting.”

Citizen Kay’s albums ‘Demokracy’ and ‘With The People’ were both nominated for an ARIA award in the ‘Best Urban Album’ category; the former was also nominated for an AIR award for ‘Best Independent Hip-Hop Album Release’. A performance soon followed on triple j’s esteemed ‘Like A Version’ segment and was met with praise by fans and critics alike.

Previous releases have also been strongly supported by Spotify, Apple Music, Complex, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers, Cool Accidents, AUD’$, Acid Stag and NME, with video clips added to rotation on ABC’s Rage. He’s also had multiple tracks added to rotation on triple j and extensive play across community radio. His three albums, including his last ‘Belly Of The Beast‘, received top 10 placings on the US College Hip Hop charts and the single ‘Ego’ broke into the top 20 of the US NACC Singles chart. In the UK, the single picked up regional and community radio plays.

Citizen Kay has toured the country extensively, supporting hip hop luminaries Public Enemy, Run The Jewels, Ice Cube, Danny Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Earl Sweatshirt and Australian crowd favourites ILLY, Tkay Maizda and Seth Sentry. He’s also made appearances at Australian mainstay events Falls Festival and Groovin’ The Moo.

‘Don’t Blink’ is available worldwide now through Asphalt Records/MGM

Lastlings Release New Single 'Out Of Touch' & Announce Six Shows For Fans In QLD

Lastlings Release New Single ‘Out Of Touch’ & Announce Six Shows For Fans In QLD

by the partae October 29, 2020
written by the partae

With under a month left until the release of their anticipated debut album First Contact and following the announcement of a wave of shows in their home state of QLD, Australian-Japanese sibling duo Lastlings today share their newest single ‘Out Of Touch’.

The track is the final song to be revealed ahead of the release of the duo’s highly anticipated 12-track debut, landing on November 20. Lastlings have been perfecting the LP over the past year, and ‘Out of Touch’ is a testament to their masterful engineering of transportive lyricism and emotive pop soundscapes. A shimmering electro-pop jam, the song juxtaposes Amy’s delicate yet poignant vocals against Josh’s darker tech-driven basslines.

LISTEN: ‘Out Of Touch’ by Lastlings

“The majority of the lyrics for Out of Touch were written at our grandparents home in Japan. The song is about disconnecting from real life and spending time on yourself, especially at times where life becomes too much and you need to recharge. Self-care is so important, especially at times like this.

“The song is a bit of a full circle moment because the main guitar parts were written with Josh’s first guitar. The guitar melodies were inspired by ‘path of the wind’ by Joe Hisaishi from our favourite childhood animation ‘My Neighbour Totoro’. All of these things together make the song extremely nostalgic for us because it reminds us of when we were kids and simpler times.”

Last week, Lastlings announced shows for fans in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. First shows sold-out quickly with subsequent shows now also nearing capacity. The shows will see Lastlings take to the stage in full band mode, playing their new material to audiences for the first time yet.The band’s anticipated debut album First Contact (out on November 20) centralises around the theme of “firsts”. Each track harkens back to notable life milestones, from the first day of life, to the first spoken words, to the first experience of falling in love, through the last breath on Earth. The album is preceded by a trailer co-created by Lastlings’ and Sydney-based director Dylan Duclos, paying homage the duo’s Japanese heritage. Produced in Japan in their native language, the trailer weaves elements of Japanese landscapes and cultural touchpoints that take form throughout songs and visuals in First Contact. Check it out here.

The band’s previously released singles ‘No Time’, ‘Take My Hand’, ‘Last Breath’, ‘Deja Vu’, and ‘I’ve Got You’ have all received airplay from triple j and found a home on a myriad of Apple Music and Spotify playlists globally.

ROZZMA Announces Khatar Sayeb EP Releases 'Hout' single
Music News

ROZZMA Announces Khatar Sayeb EP Releases ‘Hout’ single

by the partae October 29, 2020
written by the partae
Press Credit: Mahmoud Shiha

Today Rozzma announces the Khatar Sayeb EP, the artist’s first release for XL Recordings / Remote Control. He kicks off the EP release with ‘Hout’, a track that displays Rozzma’s knack for combining tribal sounds and contemporary urban/street music with a sharp, idiosyncratic flair.

Rozzma is an Egyptian sound artist inspired by the era where sound preceded music – he finds inspiration in the similarities between the wilderness of prehistoric times and modern- day chaos. Having already performed his particular strain of music across the world and at festivals like Sonar and Unsound, Rozzma releases ‘Hout’ into the digital world with an animated video created by the artist’s close friend Mahmoud Shiha.

“Hout is a celebration of beating the odds,” says Rozzma. “It’s about a specific state of mind where one finds comfort in the most extreme and unfortunate circumstances to beat the odds that one could instead fear.”

The EP’s title Khatar Sayeb means ‘loose danger’. “The release challenges the idea that danger and fear are uncontrollable circumstances,” explains Rozzma. “We cannot fully diminish fear or danger. We can only condition ourselves to believe that safety exists during the absence of fear. It is however more dangerous to deny the uncertainty of danger itself. Danger is a very broad state with infinite circumstances. But it is also infinitely uncertain and mainly linked to luck. We do not control our luck; good or bad. And it is solely luck that dictates danger and safety. It is for that reason that one’s best chances may be to condition themselves to find comfort in danger. Loose danger to be specific.”

Rozzma’s world is one of status quos being challenged, whether that be the real world, the historical world or specifically in the world of music. Rozzma won’t let you settle with what you believe. Everything deserves to be challenged.

OLY SHERMAN returns with soulful new single, 'THE WORLD IS IN A BAD ROOM' Sydney artist performs two SOLD OUT shows at The Vanguard in October
Music InterviewsMusic News

Oly Sherman

written by the partae

Where are you currently based?
Currently still based in Sydney!

How did you first start playing music?
I first started playing guitar and piano through school, and from there my guitar teacher convinced me to start singing. I started growing more confident and becoming better with my craft I suppose. I then started to create my own project as
such, and everything flowed from there.

What’s been happening recently and how has your Covid experience been?
Covid at the start was tough, as my first national tour was cancelled halfway through. Like a lot of people that kind of forced me to shift my priorities and financials. These days it’s going great though! I’m in the latter stages of completing my first album, and I just recently played 2 sold out shows.

Your new single ‘The World Is In a Bad Room’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?
I guess the song is a conglomerate of a lot of personal relationships mixed in with everything that’s going on in the world. I also took a lot of inspiration through Tom Misch’s latest album.

How did you go about writing the single?
The song itself didn’t actually take too long! It kind of popped up one day when I was in the studio. I had been playing around with a particular drum groove (the one you can hear in the song) and everything just fell into place really quickly!

Where and when did you record and who with?
I recorded the track in a few places, but mainly within Kiln Studios in St Peters, Sydney. I developed the final stages of the track with my engineer ‘Danial Notoli’, someone who I’ve been working with for the past 2 or so years.

How did you approach the recording process?
Like many of my other projects, I started this song with the drum rhythm. I find it a lot easier and, in some way, a lot more fun to create stuff over a rhythm that you can bop to to begin with.

What programs/instruments did you use?
I use Logic Pro for pretty much all of my recording! I also played pretty much every instrument you can hear in the track and recorded them all individually.

What do you like to do away from music?

I like to do a lot of things to be honest. I think the best thing I like to do other than music is hang with friends. Either going away somewhere or just having drinks really sets my mind straight. I also love a read.

Who are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of Jordan Rakei, and a lot of SG Lewis.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2020 going into 2021?
I’ve got a few more sit down shows within rural NSW before the year is up which I’m really looking forward to doing! Assuming everything eases up as it has been, 2021 should be full of touring!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
I don’t think I can go past Italian with some really good wine. And my absolute place to hang is the beach.

DMA’S Premiere ‘Round & Around’ Video At Everton’s Goodison Park Stadium (UK) + Played The AFL Grand Final + 5 ARIA Nominations + Sell Out 24 Shows

by the partae October 29, 2020
written by the partae

It was a proud moment for I OH YOU this past weekend with DMA’S taking the stage ahead of bouncedown at the 2020 Toyota AFL Grand Final between Richmond and Geelong on Saturday. Playing to a massive live audience of almost 30,000 at The Gabba in Brisbane, the band’s performance played on screens across the nation as part of the AFL broadcast, which attracted a mammoth national average TV audience of 3.812m, its highest rating audience since 2016.

The Gabba was not the only hallowed ground the band’s music was heard in this past weekend. In a world first, DMA’S premiered their new video for ‘Round & Around’ live on the big screens to an empty Goodison Park Stadium in Liverpool UK, home of Everton Football Club. A film capturing this momentous moment was live streamed on both DMA’S and Everton FC’s Facebook pages overnight, showing the band’s full-throttle anthem reverberating across the deserted stadium. Frontman Tommy O’Dell is a passionate, life-long fan of the club, thanks to his dad’s side of the family all hailing from Liverpool.

Directed by Steve Lattuca, the ‘Round & Around’ video explores the band’s roots in Newtown, Sydney. It features a mix of new and archive footage of the band in their local environment and includes clips of them performing on the roof of The Marlborough Hotel.

‘Round & Around’ is the song that best bridges the gap between the band’s forward-facing sound and their love for Britpop, as it progresses from jangly indie guitars into a full-throttle rush of energy. O’Dell’s vocals capture the melancholy of waking up on a Sunday morning and not knowing where life is taking you, yet his power and poise is immediately uplifting. The song was recently chosen as Radio X’s Track of the Week, making it the fourth consecutive DMA’S track to earn that accolade.

The video emerges following the news that DMA’S have been nominated for a remarkable five ARIA Awards for current album THE GLOW (recorded and mixed by multi-Grammy Award winning producer Stuart Price). They’re in contention for Album of the Year, Best Rock Album, Best Independent Release, Best Group and Best Live Act.

Some very lucky Brisbane fans also had the opportunity to see DMA’S live following their AFL Grand Final performance, when they played 6 sold-out shows this week at The Tivoli. The band have now played 24 sold-out ‘Unplugged & Intimate’ shows between Sydney & Brisbane in support of THE GLOW.

THE GLOW represented a huge leap forward for the Australian trio. Infusing euphoric anthems with pulsating alt-pop synths and big beat dynamics, the band’s third studio album resulted in their highest chart positions of their career, debuting at #2 in Australia and #4 in the UK and #1 in Scotland.

OLY SHERMAN returns with soulful new single, ‘THE WORLD IS IN A BAD ROOM’ Sydney artist performs two SOLD OUT shows at The Vanguard in October

written by the partae

“I never know it’s good, I know it’s no one’s fault, the world is in a bad room…”

With words that linger, Oly Sherman delivers a song that showcases the Sydney artist at his soulful best, ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’. The new single from Sherman is striking in its understated form, with focus centred on the songwriter’s lyricism and vocal delivery.

Due for release this October, Oly Sherman’s new single is the latest in a string of impactful releases, proving that 2020 hasn’t stopped him from producing some of his most engaging material to date.

‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ stirs from the onset; Sherman’s rich vocals are heavy with depth and soulful edge. Akin to ‘Resolution’-era Matt Corby, the single is a rumination on the current state of the world and Sherman’s navigation through not only this warped climate we’re living in, but his own personal struggles. “A mixed mindset between the torn up world we’re trying to get through, and my own mind. The song basically encapsulates our decisions when weighed up with friends, relationships and social media.” Oly Sherman

And while themes of confusion, unrest and indecision may have found their way into the song’s lyrics, the composition of ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ proved to be a more definitive process. Recorded at Sherman’s home studio and also at Kiln Studios in St Peters, ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ saw Sherman work with frequent collaborator Daniel Natoli once more on mixing.

Thinking ahead to his return to live performances with a hopeful easing of restrictions in time, Sherman crafted ‘The World Is In A Bad Room’ and previously released singles ‘Homeboy’ and ‘Madness’ with his dynamic shows in mind. “I wanted to create something with a consistent groove, and [that] allows the band and I to play freely live. The recording process was really quick, with the chord structure and vocals taking only a day to lay down. I just fiddled with the tune for the next month until I arrived at something I was super, super happy with.” Oly Sherman

2019 and pre-pandemic 2020 proved to be one of Sherman’s strongest and successful career periods to date. The release of his sophomore EP Three Oh Three further propelled the artist onto the national radar, performing extensively around the country including spots at the Newtown Festival, Sydney Beer Festival and in support of artists including Slum Sociable, Kim Churchill and New Zealand’s Louis Baker. January 2020 also saw Sherman take his music international, bringing his soulful sounds to Japan for the first time, playing 11 shows before returning to Australia to perform as part of fundraising efforts for Bushfire Relief.

This month, Sherman returns to the stage in Sydney, with two SOLD OUT shows at the beloved venue The Vanguard scheduled for October 23.

Canberran electronic artist and producer Ryan Fennis today shares his sophomore EP, ICEBERG. Listen HERE.

ICEBERG is a dizzying oscillation of genres and patterns from start to finish. Pivoting from the RNB laced work of the Detour EP, ICEBERG is a pirouette of indie rock, new wave and bass laced with a club music finish. Listeners are met with title track ‘Iceberg”s pulsating bass, and staccato guitar plucks, before a sudden drum and bass crash. ‘Watchlist‘ continues the up tempo journey through breakbeat then shifting to ‘Fifteen”s punchy bass driven psychedelia. Previously released singles ‘Dreamstate‘, ‘Overload‘ and ‘Save Yourself‘ follow, making for overall a distinctly Ryan Fennis experience.

Growing up in the nation’s capital, Ryan felt distant from the music scene there, initially drawn to outside influences as his songwriting talents began to incubate as an adolescent. Now, he locates inspiration from within, consolidating and refracting everything that makes up the Canberra he lives in through his own music and visual art: the landscapes, local dialects, iconographies, communities and creative collectives, weekly parties and more. Through this, he seeks to give a distinct sonic and visual language to being Canberrean.

Having felt the absence of representation during his childhood growing up there, he’s now hoping to mould himself into that presence towards whom others can look. In doing so, his music becomes a compelling exercise in opening up a space for himself, a kind of real-time process of identity formation and self-discovery through his art. In 2020, Ryan Fennis‘ sound is his most purposeful and true-to-himself to date. Governed by intuition, innovation and a sense of authenticity, his music is a constantly evolving experiment in progress. Growing up feeling distant from popular music locally and nationally, the artist consolidates and refracts all that makes up the Canberra he lives in, through his own music and visual art.

As with anyone attempting to create something new, Ryan Fennis’ music is defined by the lack of guidelines in place. Finding room to experiment with a collage-style songwriting process and bent production sensibility, he throws left-of-field samples and genres ranging from club music, psychedelic-tinged indie rock, jazz and new wave up against one another. His forthcoming EP is his attempt to give shape and sound to what it means to live in, come from and identify with Australia’s capital city; ICEBERG is in part an analysis of life in Canberra, a body of work that remains a testament to Ryan Fennis‘ off-kilter craft.

THE DREGGS are Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris, an indie-folk songwriting duo from The Sunshine Coast. Since forming in 2017 they have amassed over 3millon streams, garnered critical praise from Tone Deaf, NME Australia, Pilerats with spot play on triple j. They also recently played at Bigsound 2020. Today they release their dreamy new single, ‘Keepsake’ which showcases their elegant songwriting and harmonies. ‘Keepsake’ is a follow up to fan favourite ‘Call Me Home’.   Speaking about their new single THE DREGGS tell us, “Keepsake is a track touching on the beauty of vulnerability and the importance of allowing people into our lives, regardless of whether they bring us pain or joy. The act of wearing someone’s heart “like a keepsake” is playing on the idea of wearing a sentimental object, such as a pocket watch or a pendant from a loved one.”   THE DREGGS encompass a whole range of emotion with their music. They find themselves writing tracks with a whole range of dynamics. Alongside this, the boys are strong advocates for Mental Health Awareness, touching on elements of mental health in their songs. Growth is a common theme throughout their music, expressing how important it is to grow and change in positive ways.   Although the music industry came to a halt during the Covid-19 pandemic, THE DREGGS are still working harder than ever, landing themselves an opportunity to feature on several of Ziggy Alberts’ tracks, most notably Together (2020), as well as supporting Kim Churchill on his ‘Bright Nights’ Australian Tour 2020, playing Bigsound2020 and in celebration of Keepsake, The Keepsake Tour starts in early November.   THE DREGGS ‘Keepsake’ is out now through Ditto Music. DZ Deathrays Announce Fifth Studio Album ‘Positive Rising: Part 2’ For Release Friday 9 July + Share Anthemic New Single & Video ‘Fired Up’

by the partae October 28, 2020
written by the partae

I OH YOU are psyched to announce DZ Deathrays’ fifth studio album Positive Rising: Part 2 – the highly anticipated follow up to 2019’s Positive Rising: Part 1 – will be released Friday 9th July 2021. In celebration of the forthcoming LP, DZ Deathrays have dropped their explosive new single ‘Fired Up’, along with a trippy animated video directed by Thomas Rawle.

VIDEO: ‘Fired Up’ by DZ Deathrays
Transitioning through over 15 different variants in its early stages, ‘Fired Up’ was starting to challenge the 3-piece, before a moment of clarity hit, as drummer Simon Ridley puts it “… basically at some point Shane (Parsons) just turned ‘Fired Up’ into a big stadium-rocking-Bruce Springsteen-style-anthem and I guess that’s when we knew what we were dealing with” and so it formed into its current state, the explosive new single set to dominate the airwaves this summer.

Premiered overnight by triple j, ‘Fired Up’ is the first single from the band since Positive Rising: Part 1’s release last year. PR:P1 saw widespread praise from local press, triple j and community radio, earned an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album and took out the prize for Best Independent Punk Album at the 2019 AIR Awards.

After decamping to Los Angeles to record ‘Part 1’, the band returned home to record ‘Part 2’ in late 2019, along with producer Miro Mackie who traversed the globe to help bring Part 2 to life on the band’s home soil, leading to a tonal shift between the albums. They’re nonetheless designed to be treated as two halves of a whole, from the songs – which the band hopes will be played from beginning to end – to the artwork, which if you put the two album pictures together, depicts a full day, a yin and yang, a full spectrum of the Positive rising existence.

With a moodier tone than its predecessor, Positive Rising: Part 2 draws the outline of an apocalyptic scene, one that sees the band – Shane Parsons, Simon Ridley and Lachlan Ewbank – stepping outside of themselves, seeking out new perspectives and surveying the world from above. From up there, they don’t always like what they see, but Positive Rising: Part 2 offers a somewhat-hopeful ending to the sprawling rock saga.

When talking about the title track, Shane Parsons sums up the ethos of the album name beautifully. “Positive Rising is the closing song of the two-part album. The track comes from thoughts of an undercurrent of positivity throughout this world making its way to the surface. Starting small and developing into something that could potentially change lives for the better.”

‘Fired Up’ is an anthemic sonic pep talk, built for the live stage. It’s drenched in everything DZ Deathrays fans adore about the band, and a showcase of what Positive Rising: Part 2 has in store.

DAILY NIGHTLY RECORDS SIGNS IJALE

by the partae October 28, 2020
written by the partae

Daily Nightly Records has just announced their latest signing, Nigerian Australian hip hop artist and producer IJALE.

The signing also comes with news that IJALE will be releasing a single on Friday 6 Nov, his first release with Daily Nightly. This follows on from his breakout debut EP ‘Wildly Disparate Sounds’, & it’s singles ‘Coffee Cups’ & ‘Hotlines’, which details the microaggressions he has faced growing up in Australia as a person of colour.

IJALE is joining the existing roster of BOO SEEKA, Big Words, Pink Matter, Your Girl Pho, Picket Palace, London Topaz & Creature Fear.

“I’m so excited to partner with Daily Nightly for the new stage in my artistry! For them to see the work that I’ve been releasing, to know what I stand for, and want to push that to new heights is really humbling. ” quote from IJALE

“Beyond excited to welcome IJALE to Daily Nightly, he’s a raw talent in so many ways, including his ability to produce, mix and master his own music. Proud to be welcoming him to the Daily Nightly/Untitled Group family” quote from label manager Annabelle Dalziel.

Jerry Agbinya, aka IJALE, began releasing music in 2017 but has been busy honing and perfecting his songwriting and production skills for years. Following a brief break from his previous project Spirals, IJALE hit the ground running with support shows alongside Winston Surfshirt, Raiza Biza and Phondupe. In January of 2020, IJALE hosted his first show and played alongside some of Melbourne’s most promising up and comers including Jordan Dennis, Nasty Mars, Rara Zulu & more. In August this year he was the triple j Unearthed feature artist.

“A blissed-out amalgam of Motown’s golden era and mellow ’80s-style synth grooves”
Bandcamp

“Taiwan’s Sunset Rollercoaster are ready to make you fall in love with their ever-so-smooth new EP Vanilla Villa.”
Paste

“Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster make dreampop that pulls from groovy ’70s soft rock and R&B, exotica, psych, orch-pop and more.”
BrooklynVegan

Taiwanese soul-psych outfit Sunset Rollercoaster today share new single ‘Under The Skin‘, the latest offering from their forthcoming record Soft Storm, due for release this October 30. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

On ‘Under The Skin‘ Sunset Rollercoaster broach into balladry, with a smooth reimagining of ballads past. Sonically intersecting at the gentle synths of Mild High Club, warmth of This Old Dog era Mac Demarco and the charm of Connan Mockasin. “Just let these nights go by, till the stars fall from the sky” sings vocalist Kuo-Hung, recalling those glint-filled evenings spent swooning with another. Together with previous single ‘Candlelight‘ featuring OHHYUK, Sunset Rollercoaster allude to the slow burn of their third studio album, Soft Storm, an introspectively funky endeavour from the group.

Following their 2019 EP VANILLA VILLA and their most recent LP, 2018’s Cassa Nova, Sunset Rollercoaster continue their project of absorbing classic American genres and styles into their amalgam of smooth 80’s city pop, “cute prog rock” and contemporary pop music. With Soft Storm, they turn their attention to sensuous and pensive quiet storm R&B. Appropriately, Soft Storm is a record full of introspective funk and quietly intense narratives, loosely tracing the course of a rainstorm hitting an unnamed city, following individuals stories of residents caught up in its path as Kuo Kuo’s lyricism zooms in and out of their lives, darting from city building to building.

Now with their forthcoming record Soft Storm, Sunset Rollercoaster are set to capitalise on their increasingly worldwide popularity, known for their epic guitar jams, imaginative visuals, and mesmerizing live show. Their most recent 2019 EP, VANILLA VILLA, made fans at Bandcamp, Flaunt, Hypebeast, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, among others, with lead single ‘Villa‘ also getting a mind-bending remix from Stones Throw‘s Jerry Paper.

‘Under The Skin‘ by Sunset Rollercoaster is out now, buy/stream it here.

The Zolas ‘I Feel The Transition’

by the partae October 27, 2020
written by the partae
In this time of sweeping political upheaval, the Zolas have found their protestation call with their new single “I Feel The Transition” – a sharp rebuke of the current state of affairs both in North America and beyond.  It’s urgent, timely, and on the nose.   The band really wants to encourage political discussion, and focus on how important the role of music and art is in turbulent times by highlighting issues and instigating conversations.  The new music is also very nostalgic, with the flavour of brit-pop deep cuts that infuses the entirety of their new album “Come Back to Life”.  Frontman Zachary Gray was eager to get into the more pressing issues after coming off a long period of writing pop music for other people [including ‘L.A. Hallucinations’ from Carly Rae Jepsen’s critically acclaimed album Emotion] and a co-writing trip in Europe [with artists such as Starsailor’s James Walsh].
Several years since the release of the band’s 2016 radio-smashing, Juno-nominated breakthrough “Swooner” – “Come Back to Life” touches on everything from waking up to Canada’s appalling treatment of its First Nations (“Wreck Beach/Totem Park”), to artists being priced out of the cities they’ve helped make great (“Bombs Away”), to Gray is at his most potently poignant on “PrEP” – which came out of a reddit thread asking users to share their first-hand accounts of the ’80s AIDS epidemic. “I’ve cried at more than a few reddit threads, but never like this. Everybody should read this,” he says.
