SUPPORT FOR 'NERVOUS BREAKDOWN' "It's timely and brilliant, and with plenty more on the way, we can't help but feel this is going to be another decade lush with the charm and excitement of one of Australia's best bands, ten years after their journey all started." - Pilerats (AUS) Aussie indie legends Philadelphia Grand Jury have returned with their endearing new single ‘Nervous Breakdown’ – produced and mixed by frontman Simon Berckelman (The Internet, Lime Cordiale, Dune Rats) and mastered by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Lana Del Ray). Dripping with their trademark charm, ‘Nervous Breakdown’ is two minutes and thirty seconds of soaring feel-good indie-rock. Opening with bouncing vocoder and driving bass, punctured by the captivating vocals of Berckelman, the track playfully weaves intricate guitar riffs and vibrant percussion, before the bridge hastens the track towards its satisfying conclusion. Simon talks about the meaning behind ‘Nervous Breakdown’: “Just to be clear, we wrote this song about a year ago, right when the world was heading full charge into oblivion without even realising it. Of course, it seems perfect for it to be coming out right now and I’m cool with that. I guess the song is a combo of that anxiety only being in love can really create and how that gets mixed up with everything else into a big old crazy blender. At the same time as getting it all off my chest, I can’t help but ask myself if it’s valid and if anyone else even has any interest in hearing about it? Am I simply lucky to have the time to be preoccupied with my own inner most feelings? Other people have to dig holes, drive buses, that kind of thing”. The band’s debut album ‘Hope Is For Hopers’ reached No. 34 on the ARIA Album Charts and was nominated for a J Award. Single ‘Going to the Casino’ won an AIR award for ‘Best Independent Single or EP’, with triple j Unearthed awarding them a slot in 2009’s Big Day Out. This support continued with single ‘The Good News’ also coming in at No. 57 in the that year’s triple j’s Hottest 100, and a performance on the station’s iconic segment Like a Version. In the live arena the trio have sold out multiple national headline tours and performed with contemporaries Franz Ferdinand, Manchester Orchestra, Megan Washington and Art vs Science, as well as playing world renowned festivals The Great Escape (UK), Live At Leeds (UK), Splendour in the Grass, Laneway Festival, Big Day Out and Falls Festival. The trio’s releases have been widely embraced by Apple Music, NME (UK), Clash (UK), Sydney Morning Herald, The Daily Telegraph, The Age, Channel V, Music Feeds, The Music and a host of others. They’ve also seen extensive support from Australian radio stations triple j, Double J, triple j Unearthed, FBi Radio and community radio. In the coming weeks Philadelphia Grand Jury will announce new tour dates and reveal an accompanying music video for ‘Nervous Breakdown’. ‘Nervous Breakdown’ is available worldwide now through Normal People Making Hits Click to stream 'Nervous Breakdown'

Western Australian singer songwriter Paige Valentine reveals her first single of 2020 with the stunning new track ‘Pure’ + live hometown launch

Paige Valentine is back with a stunning new single ‘Pure’, her first release for 2020. Co-written with renowned songwriter Matt Gresham and produced by The Money War’s Dylan Ollivierre, the song is a hauntingly soulful track that perfectly showcases Paige’s exquisite vocal range. “I think the real key has been writing from the heart,” says Paige of the single. “Letting my voice go where it wants to.”

Out today, ‘Pure’ marks an exciting new direction and style for the newly Fremantle-based musician, following a move away from her hometown of Margaret River. Opening with a sparsity that allows Paige’s exquisite vocals to take the floor, ‘Pure’ unfolds in gradual layers of synths, keys, and delicate harmonies, soundtracking an intimate and personal journey back to love.

“Pure was written on a winter’s afternoon while visiting my friend and fellow writer, Matt Gresham. I was beginning to witness a number of friends’ long term relationships being tested and drew a bit on personal experience, when two people who love each other seem to drift apart chasing different dreams, or going through hardships, or just generally changing as people. Matt already had the chords ready to go, I ad-libbed the first verse and chorus while he was playing guitar. We both knew we were onto something really special and something that really hit a nerve, Matt even asked if I wanted to continue writing it – it was intense. We finished the song half an hour later…vulnerable, personal, challenging songwriting. I went to Sydney and did some pre-production with Billy Otto, before returning to Fremantle and finishing the single with Dylan Ollivierre (The Money War). Pure is about trying to remember why you love someone and wanting to get back to that innocence of when you fell in love.” – Paige Valentine

Though still early in her career, accolades have started piling up for Paige, who is already a five-time WAM Award nominee and Vanda & Young International Song Competition finalist. Flattering as this may be, Valentine’s motivation is purely her music. To write the best songs she can, and deliver them with honesty and tenacity. Paige Valentine shows no signs of slowing down in 2020, with another single already in the works and hints of an EP on the way. To launch the release of ‘Pure’, Paige will be celebrating with a special intimate live hometown show at Feld & Co. A Tiny Spaces Event on Thursday 11 June.

THE CASANOVAS LAUNCH NEW SINGLE “RED HOT” AND ANNOUNCE FORTHCOMING NEW ALBUM “REPTILIAN OVERLORD”, PRODUCED BY MARK OPITZ

written by the partae

Today is the day. A red letter day. A red hot letter day. It is the day that Melbourne rockers, The Casanovas, release their new single ‘Red Hot’ and announce their forthcoming album ‘Reptilian Overlord’ – out August 28.

Last year, with a set of great new material, the re-tooled Casanovas hit the studio with iconic Oz rock producer Mark Opitz (AC/DC, The Angels, Cold Chisel, The Divinyls) to record a new album. The Casanovas provided the first taste from the upcoming album late last year when they released their first new music in over four years with popular single ‘Hollywood Riot’.

This new single ‘Red Hot’ proves to live up to its name, with James “The Hound Dog” Young, owner of the iconic Cherry Bar in the boys’ hometown calling ‘Red Hot’ “another scorcher”. “It’s like they’ve captured all my favourite rock acts – Cheap Trick, Stones, Kiss, ZZ Top & AC/DC, and crammed them all into their own jar of Vegemite” he proclaims.

The Casanovas will launch the single this Saturday Night at 8PM (AEST), with a live-streamed performance from Melbourne venue Musicland. Details here.

‘Red Hot’ revels in everything that fans have come to know and love about The Casanovas, and it shows the impact of Opitz, who was involved in many of the band’s favourite albums like Powerage and Face To Face. As Casanovas bassist Damo Campbell says, “Mark is the master at miking for great guitar tones. He definitely brought some of those techniques into our sessions…  It was also pretty inspiring to be in the studio hearing some of Mark’s stories of some of the great rock bands he has worked with over his career.”

Singer/guitarist Tommy Boyce credits legendary Brit blues rockers Free as an influence on ‘Red Hot’. Free’s rock-solid, soulful groove had a huge influence on Tommy during the writing of this song. “I was enjoying those big riffs that have heaps of space in between chords,” says Tommy. “That kind of tough, unhurried swagger.”

Swagger is something that these guys have in spades. Although they got caught up in the early 21st-century rock mania, The Casanovas always had deeper roots and a natural ease. Hailing from the Live Rock’n’Roll Capital of the Universe – Melbourne – The Casanovas were a merging of two great local traditions –punk rock’n’roll and Oz Rock – and they had a twinkle in their eye and brought a youthful freshness to both when they appeared at the start of the century.

‘Red Hot’ is available on all platforms now, along with its B-Side, ‘St Kilda is Fucked’, a heartfelt (albeit cheeky) denunciation of the one-time jewel of Melbourne’s South; once a rock’n’roll haven, now gentrified. It’s not going to win them any new fans in their old stomping ground but might raise a smile amongst some of their old ones.

‘Red Hot’ is out today and available here:

The Casanovas’ 5th studio album Reptilian Overlord is out August 28 and is now available to pre-order on all formats including limited edition reptilian green vinyl and CD here.

The Casanovas launch ‘Red Hot’ this Saturday Night, June 6 at 8PM (AEST), with a live-streamed performance from Melbourne venue Musicland. Details here.

The Angels Release New EP ‘Under The Stone’

by the partae June 5, 2020
written by the partae

This is it, folks – The Angels 2020. 44 years after their first release, The Angels have released their new EP, Under The Stone. Their first new material in six years, this is a band that’s still raging with the energy and intensity of an act that’s just starting out.

Under The Stone is classic Angels, the band that Jimmy Barnes said “changed Australian music forever”. There are few more glorious sounds in Australian music than the blistering guitar attack of the Brewster brothers.

The title track ‘Under The Stone’ came to The Angels’ Rick Brewster in a dream, “I’d been messing around with a number of slower tunes and felt the urge to write a full-on riff-based track,” he explains. “It was one of those ‘wake up in the middle of the night, I’ve got to record this riff before I forget it’ episodes.”

Under The Stone shows many sides to The Angels, it’s not all about their classic guitar sound. Drummer Nick Norton assumes lead vocal duties on two tracks – ‘Escape’ and ‘Leaders of Men’ – and ‘Heart to Heart’ is “an unashamed nod to Pink Floyd”. With a powerful vocal by Dave Gleeson, it’s a moving song about child sexual abuse and the innocent victims that are left behind.

‘Escape’ resonates with the crazy times we find ourselves in. “I wrote ‘Escape’ years ago, not as a pandemic lament but as a tale of world weariness,” Nick explains. He imagined the song would be classic Angels: riff-driven hard rock. But it took a surprising left turn with John responsible for the music and became “perhaps more Bob Dylan than Angels”.

Then there’s the epic celebration of the history of blues and rock, ‘Blue Blood’, which the Brewster Brothers wrote with former Guns N’ Roses manager Alan Niven. It’s no surprise that Niven is a fan, with Axl Rose on record as saying, “one of the main reasons this band [Guns N’ Roses] got together was a song called ‘Take A Long Line’”.

Under The Stone shows that The Angels remain a potent force. Live on stage. And on record. Under the glitter. Under the Stone.

Mr. Bungle Release ‘USA’ Single (The Exploited Cover) And Limited Edition Shirt, With 100% Of Proceeds Donated To MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund

by the partae June 5, 2020
written by the partae

THE EXPLOITED COVER MARKS THE BAY AREA BAND’S FIRST RECORDED MUSIC SINCE 1999

“They keep their secrets undercover
The rich don’t bother about those that suffer
This ain’t the land of milk and honey
Cause all they want is money money money”

– The Exploited
Mr. Bungle roar back with their first recorded music since 1999, releasing a blistering cover of The Exploited’s politically-charged anthem, ‘USA’, available now on all digital platforms via Ipecac Recordings/Liberator Music HERE.

The Bay Area band, whose current incarnation features original members Trevor Dunn, Mike Patton and Trey Spruance with Scott Ian (Anthrax, S.O.D) and Dave Lombardo (Dead Cross, ex-Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies), is donating 100% of the proceeds from both the song and a limited edition t-shirt to the MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund, through the 4th of July. The shirt, which will only be offered through Independence Day, is available exclusively via Mr. Bungle’s webstore HERE.

MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund was created by The Recording Academy® to help those within the music community who have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Doesn’t matter what part of the political spectrum you are on, everyone at some point has said ‘Fuck the USA’. The closest thing we have to a universal sentiment,” says Spruance.

“This is a song that resonates and speaks to the country that Ipecac calls home,” adds Ipecac Recordings Co-owner Greg Werckman, who will also be donating the label’s proceeds from the single.

“Over 100,000 US citizens are dead from the pandemic. At the same time protective masks have turned into a political football and no one has a grasp on testing. Racism continues to rear its ugly head. Police brutality spikes, unemployment spikes, depression spikes and ‘our’ ego driven elected officials don’t seem to care. We need to do a better job of looking out for each other. MusiCares looks after all of us in the music community.”

Limited edition Mr. Bungle ‘USA’ shirt
Mr. Bungle surprised fans last Autumn when they announced a trio of The Raging Wrath of The Easter Bunny performances for February of this year. The dates, which eventually grew to seven sold out performances across Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, were the first time the Eureka, California born band had performed in nearly 20 years and the first time the outfit had played the songs on their self-produced 1986 demo in 30+ years.

Mr. Bungle recently wrapped up re-recording the originally cassette only eight-song demo, with Dunn telling Revolver: “The music from The Raging Wrath, which we wrote when we were 15 and 17 years old, continued to be relevant to us. But the original demo was never fully realized. It was a DIY four-track tape recording fully self-produced by our naive and wandering minds whilst still learning how to play our instruments and understand songwriting at its most basic level… for us, going back to the roots is totally exciting.” A release date has yet to be announced.

KEY OUT “ANTHROPOMORPHIA” ALBUM OUT FRIDAY 26TH JUNE VIA HALF A COW RECORDS

by the partae June 4, 2020
written by the partae
“Stray”, the second single from Key Out’s forthcoming album “Anthropomorphia” is available Friday 29th May on all digital platforms via Half A Cow Records.

Stray is a change of pace – a wash of attacking guitar, unexpected cross-cutting drums and a contemplation of suburban life, anchored by an insistent post-punk bassline. It finds a place on the sonic spectrum between My Bloody Valentine and Shellac, was recorded by the band and mixed and mastered by Wayne Connolly (Amy Shark, Matt Corby).

The video is a study of small details, finding interest in minutiae. Watch the video here.

Key Out will release their second album, Anthropomorphia, on Half A Cow Records, on Friday 26 June 2020.

Anthropomorhia is a bedroom recording featuring acoustic guitars and ageing synthesizers, toy percussion and drums, sequencers and vocal harmonies. It has the intimacy of a home recording, but the polish of Wayne Connolly’s mixing and mastering (Amy Shark, Matt Corby).

The home ‘studio’ gave the band the freedom to chop, edit and rearrange original demos and the songs changed. Electronics were swapped out for acoustics, and analog drums for sequencers. Rock songs became electroish-post punk (Chorus), filtered summery pop (Buildings) and close mic’d folk (Dog).

The first single Chorus was playlisted on Double J, made 2SERs best new music list, and was played across Austereo (Rebel Rock FM Qld), ABC Darwin and  community radio across Australia. Doubtful Sounds called Chorus “dark, melancholic and moody synth-rock… bringing to mind acts such as Underground Lovers, Ride and New Order”.

The album’s ten tracks clock in at just over 20 minutes. The longer tracks on Anthropomorphia would have been short on 2019’s What (Do) You See. “We’ve always liked the complete sounding two-minute pop songs of Joyce Manor or Sneeze or The Magnetic Fields or Guided by Voices, but they weren’t our template” says Paddy Haid (ex-Sarah Blasko, Ides of Space)  “we just built songs around the important parts, and let them run their course”.
The album will be available on limited edition marbled vinyl and via digital platforms through Half A Cow.
The band is looking forward to playing songs from the album live in a reopened world or via digital channels in the near future.
Key Out is Paddy Haid, Rohan Geddes and Caroline Wake.
“a mesmerising mix of post-punk instrumentation, wrapped up in a slick two-and-a-half minute package that truly commands your attention.” Tone Deaf on “Stray”

“a delightful shimmering piece that seems soaked in nostalgia and an air of satisfying wistfulness.” Back Seat Mafia on “Stray”

“That bassline, those synths, the sharpness of the guitars, the vocal delivery; if you’re a fan of post-punk and atmospheric indie rock, you’ll love this new single from Sydney’s Key Out.” Double J on “Chorus”

“dark, melancholic and moody synth-rock… bringing to mind acts such as Underground Lovers, Ride and New Order”. Doubtful Sounds on “Chorus”

A spectacular two-day digital music festival experience, bringing together the planet’s biggest names in electronic dance music and the world’s best technology in 3D design, video production and special effects. Just imagine... a dazzling new Tomorrowland location has been crafted over the past few months, in a place far away from anyone, a place that you would normally never visit... but one that is set to open its doors, welcoming everyone from all corners of the world, for one weekend only… On Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th, Tomorrowland will host their first 3D digital festival edition, titled ‘Tomorrowland Around The World’. People of all ages and places are invited to join the spectacular festival experience. Without limitations of borders or boundaries, the two-day event is a world premiere and a major step in the future of music festivals.  Over recent months, Tomorrowland has received many requests from its worldwide community to do something special during the two sold-out weekends of Tomorrowland Belgium. This global connection has inspired Tomorrowland to introduce and create a brand new platform through which visitors can participate in an unprecedented two-day festival experience with the world’s first interactive 3D festival experience. Festival visitors will be able to navigate easily through a magical and newly created Tomorrowland location with a PC, laptop, smartphone or tablet – you don’t need special VR goggles – and explore the entire festival site in an interactive way together with friends. The two-day festival weekend will offer its guests a packed schedule with plenty of things to do, see and experience.  As with the other editions of Tomorrowland, music and spectacular shows will be central to this event. The world’s best technologies in gaming, 3D design, video production and special effects will bring together 8 different stages including Atmosphere, Core, Freedom Stage and Elixir, joined by 3 new stages, which have been specially created and designed by the creative team and 3D artists behind Tomorrowland. Each stage will feature music from the world’s best artists in dance and electronic music – from all genres – and a large portion of the fireworks and laser shows characteristic of Tomorrowland. As icing on the cake this year’s iconic Mainstage, embodying the theme of 2020 ‘The Reflection of Love – Chapter 1’, will be unveiled to the world during Tomorrowland Around The World.  Besides the performances, there will be all kinds of interactive experiences to choose from, including inspirational webinars, games and workshops related to lifestyle, food, fashion and the Tomorrowland Foundation. Together with the performances, Tomorrowland Around The World will be a full day/weekend experience between 15h00–01h00 CEST. There will be a ‘time-zone-friendly’ option for visitors from Asia and North or South America. Michiel Beers, co-founder of Tomorrowland: “Tomorrowland Around The World is the result of a gigantic team effort of hundreds of people who are working around the clock to create a never-before-seen interactive entertainment experience. Since we started this project and all ideas came together, we immediately felt an enormous energy and lots of positivity from everybody involved. For us it’s a bit re-inventing the festival experience, but we truly believe that we can bring the spirit of Tomorrowland and entertainment at the highest level to people and homes around the globe. We hope that hundreds of thousands of people will unite in a responsible way and that small Tomorrowland gatherings at people’s homes – from Canada to Australia, from Japan to Brazil and everywhere in between – will be organised. Especially during the weekend where normally Tomorrowland Belgium would take place, we really have the power to unite the world.” The People of Tomorrow are invited to experience this unique event together with friends: dressing up with your best festival outfit, putting up tents in your back garden to create your own DreamVille, setting up a big screen, inviting your beloved ones for a nice barbecue with music and an amazing festival experience, decorating your balcony or throwing a party in your living room – this weekend is all about uniting through the power of music in a responsible and safe way. Tomorrowland introduces digital festival ‘Tomorrowland Around The World’

by the partae June 4, 2020
written by the partae

A spectacular two-day digital music festival experience, bringing together the planet’s biggest names in electronic dance music and the world’s best technology in 3D design, video production and special effects.

Just imagine… a dazzling new Tomorrowland location has been crafted over the past few months, in a place far away from anyone, a place that you would normally never visit… but one that is set to open its doors, welcoming everyone from all corners of the world, for one weekend only…

On Saturday, July 25th and Sunday, July 26th, Tomorrowland will host their first 3D digital festival edition, titled ‘Tomorrowland Around The World’.

Especially during the weekend where normally Tomorrowland Belgium would take place, we really have the power to unite the world.”

The People of Tomorrow are invited to experience this unique event together with friends: dressing up with your best festival outfit, putting up tents in your back garden to create your own DreamVille, setting up a big screen, inviting your beloved ones for a nice barbecue with music and an amazing festival experience, decorating your balcony or throwing a party in your living room – this weekend is all about uniting through the power of music in a responsible and safe way.

More about this all-new Tomorrowland location will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Stunning New Film ‘This is Ibiza’ Takes You Deep Into the Dance Music Capital of the World

by the partae June 4, 2020
written by the partae
This is Ibiza is a brand new and behind the scenes look at Ibiza, out to rent or buy June 5th on Amazon Prime. The sun soaked Balearic Island is the dance music capital of the world, where hedonism and world class clubbing experiences collide in a place of stunning natural beauty. Three years in the making by Directors Jody Hall and Mindaugas Volkis and hosted by Jermaine Whitehead-Bailey, you can watch a trailer for the movie here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN–xj_ii9k&feature=youtu.be
This is Ibiza is a unique window into a fantasy-like paradise that really conveys the magic of the island, how it became what it is and what it is like to be there. This immersive and authentic new film will take you on a special tour to one of the most famous (and infamous) islands in the entire world, where an extraordinary mix of night-life hedonism and spiritual evolution create a unique culture of dance, music and love.
With its mega clubs, breathtaking villas, once in a lifetime nights out, white sand beaches, world famous sunset parties and woodland hideaways, Ibiza has got a lot of negative press and media exposure, good and bad, over the years. This new film has a firm focus on the ever present spirit of freedom, love and music that made the electronic music explosion possible here, and then around the world. The White Isle is where it all started and is one of the few places on the planet where diversity does not bring conflict. All people are in harmony and truly coexist in true harmony.
This fascinating new film consists of insightful interviews with the owners of the biggest brands and venues here as well as the new businesses. The likes of Elrow, Defected, Pacha, O Beach Ibiza, Chuckie, The Zoo Project, Sam Divine, Marco V, Darius Syrossian, Nick Warren, Lovely Laura, Eden Ibiza, Ibiza Club News, Café del Mar Ibiza, ANANESWORLD, DJ Sneak, Judge Jules, Pikes Ibiza and many more all feature.
There are also voices such as the locals, upcoming DJs, music loving clubbers and the VIP clientele who have all been involved in Ibiza’s evolution and rich story over the years. Interviews are illustrated with the activities inside the clubs, retreats, nature, boat trips and plenty more to give a real sense of history past and present. The whole film has a majestic melodic house vibe and the majority of the documentary soundtrack comes from talented Scottish producer and Ibiza resident James iD.
This is Ibiza is out to rent or buy June 5th on Amazon Prime with a launch party on June 5th at Sunset Ibiza in San Antonio.

I was DJing for my dorm room and the wider building and then started chucking in mashups and remixes in my sets. What's been happening recently? Working tirelessly on my next project which comes out at the end of the year. Seriously, can't wait to share this one  Your new single ‘Reasons' Featuring Jalmar is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track? This song actually started as a demo for another producer who wasn't vibing the track, so I took back my vocals and built a whole new beat around it. Like many organisations in the creative industries, Open House Melbourne is making dramatic adjustments to the Open House Melbourne Weekend announced for Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July in addition to July programming.  The 2020 program will not open the physical doors to the city’s most significant buildings, but instead it will unlock the incredible enthusiasm, creativity and knowledge of many building hosts, architects and designers who support the program year-on-year. 2020 will be a time for reflection, for contemplation, and for reimagining our city.  "It is an opportunity to ensure that the next generation of construction and of protection of our built environment centres around good design principles – providing long term financial value, protection of our precious environment, supportive of our needs, whilst creating inspiring and cherished spaces for us all to work and live in. Good design always needs to be an intrinsic part of all our built environment decisions,” says Tim Leslie, Interim Co-Executive Director of Open House Melbourne.  The digital program will engage online audiences in architecture and design events leading up to a hive of activity during the Open House Weekend.  The program elements will include streamed live talks and presentations, including annual highlights like the Speaker Series, where a number of experts present their design process behind built outcomes, and the Heritage Address – a thought-provoking look at the role heritage plays in our cities presented in collaboration with the Heritage Council of Victoria.  The highlight of the 2020 digital Weekend will be the immersive experiences embedded throughout a program of virtual building tours. Special programming at return sites like Australian Tapestry Workshop, Jack's Magazine, Villa Alba Museum and Waller House and more will be revealed in an exciting announcement that will reimagine some of the city’s much-loved heritage buildings.  The full program of buildings and digital events will be announced in July. Expect some familiar faces and hard to reach places.  A predominantly digital Open House Melbourne experience provides a unique opportunity to do things differently; to engage with new collaborators and reach new audiences – no longer subject to large crowds, queues or inclement weather. In fact, the digital program will provide greater access and larger audiences to spaces once limited by opening hours, groups sizes or security concerns.  Open House Melbourne 2020 is a chance to experience the city from anywhere across Victoria, or around the world. It is a wonderful opportunity to share and celebrate one of the world’s most liveable cities.  Open House Melbourne is an independent organisation that fosters public appreciation for architecture and public engagement in design in the built environment. We exist because we believe a more engaged public will result in better design outcomes for our buildings, our streets and our cities. We are registered as a charity (as Melbourne Open House Inc) with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission ABN 68295482310, we are part of the Open House Worldwide network, and we are an initiative of the Committee for Melbourne Future Focus Leadership Program.  Image caption: Open House Weekend, 2019. Ever since they dropped the now-iconic ‘Delete’ in 2014, DMA’S have smashed it: millions of streams, massive headline shows – including a recent sold-out Brixton Academy, where 5,000 tickets sold in under 24 hours – and much more. Watch them perform ‘The Glow’ at that very show here. Melbourne indie wordsmiths FRENTE created some of Australia’s best alternative folk pop in the 1990’s with their iconic singles ‘Ordinary Angels’, ‘Accidentally Kelly Street’, and debut Marvin The Album, which hit #5 on the ARIA charts. With over 10 million streams to date via tracks ‘Fools’, ‘Down Side of Up’ and ‘My Hands’, Los Angeles-via-Sunshine Coast singer / songwriter / producer, JACK GRAY is on the rise. As heard on his debut EP Nights Like This, Gray is an old-school artist in a modern era, having won fans’ hearts with his Instagram covers of acts such as Bon Iver and Mumford and Sons, and support slots with names like Mahalia, Maisie Peters, Dean Lewis and E^st. His new single ‘I GOT 3’ is released Friday 19 June. Melbourne guitar-pop five-piece ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER knocked it out of the park with their 2018 debut Hope Downs, which met with worldwide critical acclaim and saw the band sell out shows across the globe. This Friday, the band will celebrate the release of their new record, Sideways To New Italy. We’re thrilled to have RBCF performing this week, on release day no less. Take a listen to current single ‘Falling Thunder’. Perth songwriter STELLA DONNELLY is a proud, self-proclaimed stirrer. Her electrifying 2019 debut album, Beware of the Dogs, is 13 tracks of charm and razor-sharp wit, as evidenced on affecting singles ‘Boys Will Be Boys’ and ‘Tricks’. Her captivating sound won fans across the globe, with everyone from Pitchfork to The Guardian and beyond praising her musical charms. We’re stoked to have Stella perform on this week’s episode of The State of Music. Melbourne’s THE CAT EMPIRE are adored the world over. 2019 saw the genre-embracing outfit deliver their eighth studio album, Stolen Diamonds, which debuted at #4 on the ARIA Album chart. The band have performed literally hundreds of world class shows, both here at home and abroad across Europe and North America plus festival stages such as Glastonbury and Bonnaroo. The Cat Empire are a musical success story that continues to be written. Their breakout anthem ‘Sweet Disposition’, taken from debut album Conditions – was a mammoth success: 5x Platinum sales in Australia, 3x Platinum in the UK, Platinum in the US (1 million+), 225 million streams and counting on Spotify. That was just the beginning. THE TEMPER TRAP are one of Australia’s biggest acts, and now the multi-ARIA winners and Brit Award nominees join us on The State of Music for a very special performance. Brisbane four-piece VIOLENT SOHO scored their second #1 ARIA Album debut with their fifth release, April’s Everything Is A-OK, led by single ‘Vacation Forever’. It’s the first new music from the band since 2016’s Gold-certified WACO, which scored 2 x ARIAs, an AIR Award, a triple j Feature Album, and the #1 position on the iTunes Album chart. With COVID-19 turning the world on its head, Victoria has had to deliver its rich music offerings through different means. For five weeks, music lovers across not just Victoria but the globe have tuned in for The State of Music, reaching a combined audience of close to two million and counting. Proudly produced and curated by the Victorian Government and Mushroom Group, The State of Music has provided both artists and music fans with the ability to experience the best of live music from the safety of home.

For our sixth and final episode of Series One we’ve gone all out, with a line-up you won’t want to miss! Settle in to catch exclusive performances and interviews on The State of Music Episode Six, live-streaming Friday 5 June at 7.30pm AEST on the Victoria Together YouTube, Facebook and together.vic.gov.au.

Episode Six stars (in alphabetical order):

DMA’S, FRENTE (performing with ALICE SKYE, ALLARA, OLYMPIA, and KATY STEELE), JACK GRAY, ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER with special guest STELLA DONNELLY (performing on the hallowed grounds of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, aka MCG), THE CAT EMPIRE (filmed at the iconic venue Forum Melbourne), THE TEMPER TRAP (performing with members of The Australian Children’s Choir), VIOLENT SOHO + more.

Plus we’ll also see a special collaboration featuring some of Australia’s best country music talent, including: APRA AMCOS ‘Song Of The Year’ winner BRAD COX; Town Of A Million Dreams songwriter CASEY BARNES; ARIA, APRA and CMA multi-award winners THE MCCLYMONTS (whose new album Mayhem To Madness is out next week); and Central Coast NSW trio LITTLE QUIRKS.

Episode Six will be hosted by Nova’s RYAN ‘FITZY’ FITZGERALD, with JANE GAZZO.

With their highly anticipated third album, THE GLOW, out Friday 10 July, Sydney trio DMA’S are set to deliver their biggest and best record yet.

Meanwhile their cover of New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ was a global radio smash hit. Tune into The State of Music this week to catch Angie Hart and Simon Austin, together with some very special guests, performing a Frente classic.

With 16 years of hard work and a fiercely loyal fanbase behind them, Violent Soho are masters of their game.

Don’t miss the final episode of Series One of The State of Music!

It's been quite a journey to make the album, spanning several years of late nights in the studio experimenting and rewriting and rearranging, and many spicy chicken burritos. We truly hope it brings people a moment of joy in such a turbulent time." Starting tonight, the 'At Home' video series will be released via the band's Facebook and IGTV every Tuesday at 7pm. Each video will feature a live recorded mash-up of Mel Tickle and Luke McDonald performing previously released singles, covers and unreleased album tracks in their homes. "We wanted to pair the release with something other than shows for obvious reasons. So we made the “Holiday Party at Home” series. Songs from the album (and some covers) re-built from inside our respective houses. Our intention was for every song to have a different feel both musically and visually. Somewhat surprisingly, it felt cathartic to play these songs in an adapted and intimate setting like this, but I guess that’s what most of us have had to do with everything lately – adapt," says Luke. The duo will also be releasing their album on vinyl which can be pre-ordered via Holiday Party's Bandcamp. Since the release of their latest single 'Let Down', Holiday Party have been added to rotation on FBi, Double J and triple j unearthed radio and received praise nationally from the likes of NME Australia, Happy Mag, Purple Sneakers, Mixdown Mag and more.  Grab your favourite drink, a couple of snacks and get cosy at home with Holiday Party.   Holiday Party’s new video releases are weekly Tuesday from today at 7 PM via Facebook and IGTV. Australian three-piece, THE BUCKLEYS, today release their second worldwide and fourth Australian single, “Breathe,” via Petrol Records / Universal Music Australia / Ume. The new soul-stirring track comes nestled in an equally emotive video that showcases a haunting and impassioned side of the band’s pop Americana trademark which they call “hippie country.” “Breathe” was recorded and co-written by Sarah Buckley and two times Grammy winning producer and engineer Chad Carlson, whose credits include Taylor Swift, Jewel and the Hunger Games soundtrack. "‘Breathe’ is our musical prayer to the world," explains The Buckleys singer Sarah Buckley. "I wrote this last year at the time when our country was experiencing horrific bushfires. It’s a message of strength, vulnerability, hurt, hope and moving forward. I find myself remembering these lyrics in moments where I just need to stop, close my eyes, listen to the sounds of world around me and just breathe."  The emotionally vulnerable ballad hopes to help people connect and find hope in our current times and has been instantly added to Australia’s largest Country playlists on Spotify and Apple as well as an across the board add with ABC Country. The release of “Breathe,” follows their monumental and ground-breaking world virtual tour where the band became one of the first to capture a global audience and achieved a ‘virtual reach’ of more than 4 million. Presented by Live Nation, the world virtual tour was developed in conjunction with Live Nation and the band’s record label, Petrol Records and US label, UMe. Performing individually curated shows for specific regions of the U.S. (and later, the world) which were streamed through Live Nation and House of Blues’ local affiliates as well as the newly launched Live From Home platform, the rising hippie country siblings were able to recreate the personalised “live” experience during a time of social distancing. The band kicked off their second run of shows with a virtual performance in India on Friday. “India has such a rich culture of music and art, we are excited that through technology we can connect with you from all the way here in Australia. Not to mention, one of our favourite bands, the Beatles, wrote much of ‘the white album’ in India... so we’ll most definitely have to play Beatles in this set for you Beatles fans like us! We can’t wait,” said The Buckleys ahead of their India show. All of The Buckleys virtual performances with Live Nation are available on the band’s YouTube channel HERE
