Though news of their forthcoming album Flip Phone Fantasy is out in the ether, Ocean Grove have been tight lipped about its release date. Today the band are drip feeding more visuals from the release however, with the reveal of new single and video ‘NEO’ and the album cover, detailed below.
Just shy of two minutes long, ‘NEO’ (STREAM HERE) bursts out of the gate before spiralling into a wobbly, distorted breakdown and ramping back up again. Bassist Twiggy Hunter, who swaps the bass for frontman duties with Dale on this track, explains that ‘NEO’ is the “sonic boom of bedroom angst”.
“…it’s the fist through the wall to expose what lies on the other side of teenage aggression,” he adds. “It is the learning of one’s depression through anger and confusion and trying to find your place in a world of distortion. It completes the spectrum of human emotions that ‘Flip Phone Fantasy’ seeks to explore.”

Recorded in-house by guitarist Callan Orr, the band left no stone unturned in the production of the track to ensure every moment has its purpose – Delivering with maximum emphasis what the band feel to be an important message to anyone who might be feeling lost.
“When we were writing this song I guess it came from a pretty low place. We’ve all been through a lot of shit in the last few years and it’s all manifested its way onto our next release in some way or another. I think being in that state of mind needs to be given a name or something to embody it. Some call it their demons. In this song I named the darkness Reaper. Sometimes we gotta crash and burn all the way to rock bottom before we can push up again. There’s been times I hope to see the bottom. I’ve been ready to look the reaper in the eye and give him this weight. One piece at a time.
In the end If we beat this shit and fight through. The weight is lifted and we can live to see a brighter day” explains Zachary Britt, Rhythm Guitarist & clean vocalist.

Laneway is a festival you always leave deeply satisfied with because you take away a collection of new artists to binge through on Spotify afterwards. Your own interests expand in a day as unique acts flout genre boundaries and open you up to new ideas musically. Reading Melbourne right, the 2020 line-up was peppered with new and underground talent from home and abroad – allowing the festival to hold true to it’s identity amidst it’s massive expansion from it’s dirty humble 2004 block party.
UK’s Col3trane and America’s Omar Apollo started the sunny day right with their pleasurey soulful voices followed by confident Benee, the 20yr old NZ superstar who’s upbeat vibe brought everyone to their feet stomping happy place.
Tones and I’s set was all voice and left of centre sounds. Of course captivating the crowd with Dance Monkey makes you appreciate her creativity but more so you’re hit hard by the depth of her vocal talent. Australian group DMA’s induced the crowd with their can’t hate Britpop rock adding to the days diversity.
Sultry RnB singer songwriter Mahalia couldn’t have been a better soundtrack to the pink sky sunset. Representing the global rise of new wave female soul-pop-RnB artists, UK’s Mahalia has garnered international fame since her 2017 hit ‘Sober’. She carried and moved the crowd with her lyrical honestly that made you feel like she was an old friend. Melbourne has championed her sound since her debut performance here in January 2019 and it showed in stage turnout.
Charlie XCX’s performance was on another level. Pulling all the pop treats she awakened the audience with a crafted set that only experience can bring to the table. Her intense vocal expression blew her synth pop tracks up in this stunning live performance.
Honouring Laneway’s essence is difficult with their transition to huge staging and lowering the age to 16+. Performances were solid but crowds are young and swarming, sets less intimate. Lucky for spaces like the Russel Athletic Lockeroom, that showcased the likes of emerging local artist Jordan Dennis out on the grass with a small crowd working his MC talent. Maybe Laneway’s still got.

Today, the GRAMPIANS MUSIC FESTIVAL reveals its lineup for 2020. To kick off a brand new decade of festivities amongst the picturesque Grampians Mountain Ranges, the festival has served up some of Australia’s best names to ensure that 2020 is going to be unforgettable.
Leading the charge, one of Australia’s brightest exports and songwriters – JULIA JACKLIN. Having just made global headlines for her recent live duet with Lana Del Rey, Jacklin’s 2019 has gone from strength to strength as she’s continued to establish herself as a world class performer.
Joining Jacklin at the Grampians Music Festival this year, a variety of artists who are all killing it in their own lanes come together to shape what is looking to be easily the biggest year of the festival yet. ECCA VANDAL, THESE NEW SOUTH WHALES, DRMNGNOW and MADDY JANE – a small but fiery example of the representation of star talent on this year’ Grampians Festival lineup – are going to be unmissable.
The Grampians Music Festival has always celebrated homegrown talent, a nurturing festival environment and the championing of diversity with the Australian music community and with their curation of the 2020 bill, the organisers are excited to share their latest festival experience with their dedicated punter base. “I’m very proud of this lineup and what it says about the Grampians Music Festival. We are blessed to have this much talent on our bill! Julia Jacklin has hit her straps both here and overseas, and her from-the-heart songwriting style is pure magic. Alongside Ecca Vandal and These New South Whales rounding out the top of the bill is a blend of an incredible mix of the artists that are making waves in Australia at the moment. It’s going to make for a very special weekend.”

Title: Stay
Label: Protocol Recordings
Nicky Romero showcases his softer side with “Stay.” Drawing upon the style of his 2019 releases like “Love You Forever” ft. Sam Martin, “Sometimes” with DallasK, and “Distance” with Olivia Holt, Romero trades in driving basslines and big-room synths for gently undulating instrumentals and a gently progressive drop in the new track. The Protocol label head pairs the dreamy melodies with emotive vocals, producing lines like “why don’t we stay, and not get older like we’re supposed to” that evoke the nostalgia of youthful romance. “Stay” follows Nicky‘s club-ready “I See” released in January as Romero‘s first single of the year.
After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” (with Krewella) and #1 single “I Could Be The One” (with Avicii), Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collabs with Mike Williams & Amba Shepherd, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, DallasK & XYLØ and Steve Aoki & Kiiara to remixes for the likes of Kygo, Rita Ora, David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. All the while showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to touch down across the globe for his incredible live performances, including residencies at Las Vegas’ Hakkasan and Omnia and forthcoming shows at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, ageHa in Tokio, Echostage in Washington DC, Du Arena in Abu Dhabi, Ultra Music Festival in Miami and more. Stay tuned to see what he has up his sleeve next.

Glitoris have earned a reputation as one of Australia’s most fearlessly political, uncompromising and unforgettable live acts. After extensively played and widely received singles, ‘Trump Card’, ‘Spit Hood’ and ‘The Policy’, Glitoris were crowned ‘Queens of Australian Punk’ (The Brag) and the band have wasted no time in following up with their brutal, unapologetic hard rock anthem ‘Slut Power’ (out Friday 14th February): a raging call-to-arms dealing with the insidious nature of violence against women.
Straight off the back of winning the National Live Music Award (NLMA’s) for ‘Hard Rock Live Act of the Year’ (2019), 2020 sees Glitoris embark on their biggest national tour to date, starting in Alice Springs (6th March), a special International Women’s Day performance in Darwin (7th March) and finishing up in their home town of Canberra (23rd May). Bringing a brand new show to the stage, complete with a powerful new image and a rallying protest befitting our times, fans can expect the band to be at their rousing, political yet satirical best.
Glitoris is Keven 007 (vocals and guitar), Andrew (Lead guitar and vocals), Malcolm (Bass and vocals) and Scott (Drums). Highly energetic, deeply political, satirical and sometimes absurd, Glitoris blends frenetic punk rock, classic hard rock riffs, metal prowess, pop harmonies and a dash of theatre with badass attitude and indelible songwriting, resulting in a unique, powerful and unrelenting musical force. Widely recognised as ‘One of the fiercest live forces in the country’ (Pile Rats), Glitoris has built an army of fans – The Gliterati – all over the country, toured extensively and performed at major national and international festivals including Groovin’ The Moo, The New Zealand Fringe Festival, Triple R Kyneton Festival and Blackwoodstock Festival (New Caledonia). Glitoris has performed as much with brand new acts as they have with established punk royalty, including Frenzal Rhomb, Regurgitator, Shonen Knife and The Meanies.
The diverse, politically on-point and refreshing nature of Glitoris’ sound means they are equally at home touring and performing as headliners or major supports, at festivals or sharing bills with new pop/rock/indie acts. Join Glitoris in 2020 for what promises to be their fiercest single and tour yet \*/

Melbourne Design Week, Australia’s leading annual international design event, today revealed the full program for its largest festival to date. Presented by Creative Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria, the festival returns for its fourth consecutive year with more than 300 events across 11 days exploring the theme ‘How Can Design Shape Life?’
Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley, said: ‘From tackling e-waste to creating healthy cities and driving sustainability, design has the capacity to improve the way we live and address the challenges of our times. This year’s action-packed program extends across greater Melbourne, and to Geelong, celebrating design in all its facets and shining a light on the designers who are shaping our lives – now and in the future.’
Tony Ellwood AM, Director, NGV, said: ‘Melbourne Design Week provides an exceptional opportunity for audiences to experience a diverse selection of keynote lectures, exhibitions and talks by the who’s who of the local, national and international design sector. This celebration of innovation and ideas showcases the best in global design practice in the design capital of Australia.’
Melbourne Design Week responds to a growing appetite for meaningful engagement with the design industry, providing a platform for designers and artists to express, question, propose and test ideas. The 2020 festival poses the question ‘How Can Design Shape Life?’ through five thematic pillars – Design Cultures, Waste, Healthy Cities, Waterfront, and Design Evolution.
DESIGN CULTURES
Life is shaped by contexts, beliefs, backgrounds and ideas that bring people together. How does design shape, and how is it shaped by, the multitude of cultures that exist in the world?
Francis Kéré: Architecture Shapes Life – Internationally acclaimed architect Francis Kéré delves into his journey and shares his vision for how architecture that is collaboratively realised, rooted in traditional knowledge and specific to its context will contribute to a positive and dynamic future for Africa. Presented by NGV with Architecture Foundation Australia and the Futuna Lecture Series.
Atmosphere: A Revival – A sauna installation that promotes the revival of bathing culture on the Birrarung (Yarra River). Presented by Studio Rain.
Take the Cake – This exhibition showcases the 100 iconic cake designs made famous by the Australian Women’s Weekly birthday cake book. Presented by NGV and Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.
Kultur-All Makaan – A three day pop-up mobile home of art and culture in Bendigo, celebrating diverse local communities. Named after a common northern European word for culture (kultur) and a Persian and African word for dwelling (Makaan) Kultur-All Makaan presents a cultural ideal of an arts institution. Presented by Punctum Inc. and Loddon Campaspe Multicultural Services.
WASTE
Melbourne Design Week continues its focus on the issue of waste by exploring how design can alleviate the problem of e-waste – phones, toys, electronics, lighting – or anything with a battery or a wire.
E-Waste Challenge Live Pitch Final, Victorian Design Challenge 2020 – Creative Victoria and NGV are offering $25,000 in prizes for the best design idea addressing the problem of e-waste. A challenge jury, chaired by Craig Reucassel from the ABC’s War on Waste, will review design solutions to tackle the 40 million tons of e-waste produced globally every year. Presented by NGV.
Bas van Abel: Dark Matter – The mobile phone is a symbol of instant connectivity, but it’s clear that we’ve lost any connection with the source of how it is made, who made it, where it comes from, and the social and environmental consequences of the production process. Fairphone aims to surface the dark matter of our production systems and make it human again. This keynote lecture by Fairphone founder Bas van Abel is a unique chance to think about the ways that design-led business can transform the environment and economy. Presented by NGV, EWaste Watch Institute and Design Institute of Australia
Melbourne 2030 – Transforming From A Consumer To A Producer – An investigation into how it is possible to transform Greater Melbourne from a consumer to a producer by the year 2030. Presented by Finding Infinity.
HEALTHY CITIES
Design is increasingly redressing the problems of urbanisation and proposing ways to improve health for humans, animals, plants and beyond. Melbourne Design Week examines the effects of increasing urbanisation and how we can foster healthy cities.
A Royal Commission into the State of Australian Cities – Part theatre, part panel discussion, this hypothetical Royal Commission delves into the most pressing issues facing the planning of our cities. Presented by Oculus.
Empathy: A Design Challenge Exhibition – The Gordon TAFE Gallery in Geelong presents works by design students from across Victoria addressing the importance of empathy in the initial design process.
Transformative Landscapes: Reshaping the City that Shapes Us – In this symposium, design and health experts explore the role of landscape architecture, urban design and planning in making healthful urban environments. Presented by Foreground.
MTalks: Density, Public Space and Happiness – Design studio NH Architecture hosts a panel discussion of the role and future of public facilities in urban developments. Presented by MPavilion.
DESIGN EVOLUTION
Explore a new wave of design thinking, from speculative structures, systems and materials, to breakthrough approaches to practice, urban resilience and social impact.
Ellen Broad, Artificial Intelligence: Made By Humans – Telstra Creativity and Innovation Keynote – AI influences our lives whether we notice it or not. But how impartial are these decisions and where does the ‘intelligence’ come from? Ellen Broad demystifies data, machine learning and information processing to reveal the very human intelligence driving AI. Presented by Telstra and NGV.
Australian Furniture Design Award 2020 Exhibition – Award finalists will be exhibited in the Stylecraft Melbourne showroom during Melbourne Design Week. Presented by NGV and Stylecraft.
Aurum – A moving-image installation that examines the complex relationship of humans with gold, and its power to transform societies. Presented by Georgia Nowak and Eugene Perepletchikov.
Vores Vævninger: Our Weavings – A tactile textile exhibition showcasing the weaving of blind and visually impaired weavers. Presented by Tove Papp Lindkvist in collaboration with the weavers from the Danish Institute for the Blind and Partially Sighted.
WATERFRONT
Open House Melbourne and Melbourne Design Week will explore the role that design plays in framing our relationship with water with a program of tours, walks, rides, talks and special events championing Victoria’s rivers, bays and oceans.
Deep Dive: Sea Urchin Snorkel Tour – Tour Port Phillip Bay with Dr Pirjo Haikola and witness the exploding population of sea urchins living below the surface. Presented by Open House Melbourne.
The Western Treatment Plant Tour – Much more than a ‘poo farm’, the Western Treatment plant is a place of historic, environmental and cultural significance. Presented by Open House Melbourne and Melbourne Water.
I’m on a (Port of Melbourne) Boat! – Step aboard and see Australia’s busiest port from a whole new angle. Presented by Open House Melbourne and Port of Melbourne.
COLLECTIBLE DESIGN
Many of Australia’s leading practitioners are experimenting with new materials, geometry, digital design, fabrication and concepts to shape contemporary design. Lighting, furniture, objects, fashion, architecture, textiles and contemporary jewellery will feature in exhibitions focusing on collectible design.
Designwork 04: Danielle Brustman – The fourth exhibition in an ongoing series dedicated to presenting the best contemporary Australian design. This solo exhibition of new works by Melbourne-based designer Danielle Brustman encompasses interior, furniture, lighting and object design. Presented by Sophie Gannon Gallery.
A&A: Exquisite Corpse/Cadavre Exquis – The debut exhibition from A&A, industrial designer Adam Goodrum and straw marquetry artisan Arthur Seigneur, presents three new and unique design pieces. Presented by Tolarno Galleries.
Life and Death – Urns made from soil, screens made from urine fed bacteria, chandeliers made from cracked phone screens and sending artworks into space – this exhibition presents projects by Australian creative practitioners exploring life and death. Presented by Friends and Associates.
Monolith – A furniture exhibition that reflects on how mass production in city buildings shapes our lives. Presented by James Howe.
Partu (Skin) by Johnny Nargoodah and Trent Jansen – A collaboration between remote cattle-station saddler Johnny Nargoodah and conceptual object designer Trent Jansen is an experiment in avant-garde furniture design working with animal skins. Presented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert and Arc One.

The NGV gratefully acknowledges the Cornish family for their support of The Cornish Family Prize for Art and Design Publishing.
