Oakland raised rapper and songwriter, Just Rese fuses together a collective sound of funk, hip-hop, and alternative R&B. Through self-awareness and honesty, Rese has tailored his music and songwriting, to what he calls an “unapologetic version of himself.” His talents and efforts have awarded the lyricist great support from media tastemakers like Revolt, The Deli, Earmilk, The Bay Bridged, SF Weekly and many more. Rese has also performed extensively across the Bay Area, in addition, to collaborating on projects with a plethora of Oakland artists, including fellow hometown native, and ‘Jentrify’  rapper, Elujay.  Now, in 2018, Just Rese is ready to release his debut, ep ‘HIPS’ composed by Northern California producer, Wax Roof.

A project two years in the making, the libretto to HIPS is curated by Rese himself and features a seamless production composed of Wax Roof. The six tracker delves deep into a couple’s relationship, from its first hello to the final farewell, all while providing a scheme of phone call recordings between the couple. A cohesive project from start to end, HIPS hones in on Rese’s innate ability to tell stories and grabs the audience’s attention by addressing life experiences from his personal perspective. Beginning with the initial lovers    and friends stage, on the ep’s first cut “Groov,” transitioning to the couple undergoing relationship complications on “Lyin,” to ultimately being unable to receive and understand love in such high capacity on ‘Holding on.’ Rese’s charismatic wit and melodic rhymes shine over a host of diverse sounds including chopped and screwed, low-temp hip-hop productions, rock-and-roll elements and live band influences that jazz heads, hip-hop enthusiasts, and R&B experts alike will find solace in.

Stay tuned for further announcements still to come from Rese, and be sure to watch the music video to “Groove”

KOJI Announces UK & EU Tour Dates With New Music Coming Soon

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

Today see’s Andrew ‘KOJI’ Shiraki, an American born artist and activist announce a full schedule of UK and EU tour dates through January and February 2019. The tour, which hits 10 countries over 25 shows, will see KOJI share the stage with Such Gold and Ducking Punches through the UK and Ireland as full band performances, before heading to mainland Europe for solo headline shows.

Speaking on the upcoming dates Andrew ‘Koji’ Shiraki stated “I have been playing shows in the UK and Europe since 2007. I’ve toured there with Into It. Over It., Geoff Rickly of Thursday, and Bob Nanna of Braid/Hey Mercedes, but now, I’m absolutely thrilled to be coming back to the UK with some of my best friends in music, Such Gold, before heading to the mainland again for my headline shows.”

Having emerged from the same Pennsylvania DIY punk and hardcore scene that gave birth to Title Fight, Code Orange, and Balance and Composure, KOJI is best known for his splits with mid-west post-hardcore and emo favorites, La Dispute and Into It. Over It.

KOJI’s critically acclaimed first and only full length, Crooked In My Mind, was produced by Will Yip and released in 2013 on Run For Cover Records. The album saw KOJI enlist Brad Vander Lugt of La Dispute on drums, as well as both Ned Stark of Title Fight and Matt Warner of Balance And Composure on bass duties. In 2015, KOJI signed to No Sleep Records and released the ‘Fury’ EP ahead of his appearance on Vans Warped Tour.

Having taken a break from touring for the past few years, aside from four shows in Japan with The Movielife this past spring, 2019 will see a reinvigorated KOJI. “I’ve been writing, climbing, and operating a bar and community space I own in Brooklyn called, June.“ mentions Shiraki. “It was really important for me to take some time out, after spending my entire 20s on the road. It’s nice to finally live in one place.”

“I initially came off the road to do some spiritual and emotional repair. The decision to slow down came during the rise of both Black Lives Matter and Trump. I knew that I wanted to participate, better educate myself, and grow in certain ways I could only do in very localized community. Taking the time for myself has grounded me and I know that I’ll be singing from a deeper, stronger place in 2019. I’m ready for the year ahead.”

Activism has always been an important part of KOJI’s artistic practice. His work on prison abolition, hunger, literacy, labour and many other human rights issues has inspired a new generation of young DIY artists to approach music with a community-first mindset for which KOJI has become known.

Speaking on his activism work, KOJI said “I have regularly taken book and food drives on the road and held lots of events with direct action steps such as letter writing to government or incarcerated people.

“Now that I own a bar in Brooklyn, we regularly host fundraisers and awareness events for groups who work on prison abolition, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, and anything else affecting the neighborhood or the world at large.

“It will always be important to me to use my platform to uplift others.”

Irish Neo-soul quintet Shookrah gets the party started with new video

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

“The band’s deeply psychedelic take on electro-funk has a soulful edge, the sign of a group willing to walk their own path. (…) There’s a disco side to Shookrah that comes to the fore on their new single, that sense of empowerment, of locating some righteous truth on the dancefloor.”

CLASH Magazine

“Shookrah, are not just a sibilance fan’s dream but also one of the most exciting bands around at the moment…the track (Gerascophobia) may be about the fear of growing up but you are certainly gonna want to grow old with this band”

Wonderland Magazine

“The Cork City-based band knows how to hypnotize with their bombastic sound.”

AFROPUNK

“Shookrah are a serious outfit and look destined for bigger and better things in the years ahead. Definitely a band on the ascent.” – JOE.ie

“Shookrah are a band who’s profile has been steadily gaining attention over the last few years – and rightly so. In an R&B that is ever-expanding, Shookrah stand out as a tight-knit collective of strong writers and even stronger performers.”

GoldenPlec

Ireland-based five-piece Shookrah has shared their brand new single “Flex” on 30th November via Broken Records, as well as a new accompanying music video. This single release follows on from their track “Don’t Wanna Doubt You”, shared in May this year, and continues the trajectory of highly successful year of writing and recording for Shookrah. The five-piece has already sparked international interest from a host of tastemaker publications, including Afropunk, CLASH Mag, Wonderland Magazine, JOE.ie, Irish Examiner, GoldenPlec and The Irish Times and have also enjoyed radio play on shows such as BBC Ulster’s Across The Line. The Irish Times crowned Shookrah, “Best Irish Act of 2017” and “50 People to Watch in 2018” while GoldenPlec named them one of their Plec Picks for 2016. The band has also been dominating the live music scene, playing headlining shows at Quarter Block Party, Wigwam and K-Fest as well as supporting music legends Billy Ocean and Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck) on their Irish tours.

Although the members of Shookrah are currently all based in Cork, Ireland, the members come from a variety of different cities and countries, including Cork, Kerry, Dublin and South Africa. The group is made up of Senita Appiakorang (lead vocals), Emmet O’Riabhaigh (drums), Daniel Coughlan (guitar), Diarmait MacCarthaigh (keyboard) and Brian Dunlea (bass guitar), all of whom have grown up with their own personal connection to music and creativity.

Inspired by cutting edge modern R&B-infused musicians such as Anderson.Paak, Janelle Monae, Solange, Princess Nokia, Hiatus Kaiyote, D’Angelo, Shookrah’s sound is reminiscent of Erykah Badu and Thundercat.

“Flex” is an uplifting whirl of self-confidence, sass, and camaraderie. The new single was recorded with Brendan Fennessy (O Emperor), mixed by Michael Heffernan, produced by Emmet O’Riabhaigh and Diarmait Mac Cárthaigh of Shookrah and mastered by April Golden, and is a triumphant track that oozes 90s-style R&B elements and confidence. Senita’s vocals effortlessly flow between low and sultry to anthemic and melismatic, all the while backed by the sexy, modern electronic big-band sound created by the rest of Shookrah. “Flex” calls on its listeners to summon their most extroverted and flamboyant selves, abandon the night’s emotional and social responsibilities and show off on the dancefloor. The music video for the track reflects this mood with flair and pizzaz; we are confronted with a host of bedazzled dancers, all dancing with pure abandon under neon lights. Senita grooves along with her funky companions, decked out in her best party get-up, letting us know that she’s going to “flex” on the dance-floor.

On Shookrah’s brand new single, Senita comments, “The song’s braggadocious theme is inspired by the emerging vogue-balls and drag culture in Ireland, specifically in Cork, where I recently stole the Drag-Queen title of ‘Miss Opulence’ at Miss Candy Warhol’s annual event. The song for me reimagines these safely created spaces amongst friends, ripe for invoking your most confident self, and falling prey to the music. ‘Flex’ very much embodies that, you’ve got Nile Rodgers-esque guitar picking contrasted with the devilish call of the synths and bass in the chorus alongside spooky vocals.”

Amy Lawton releases new single ‘Don’t Bring Louise’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Amy Lawton has released her brand new single ‘Don’t Bring Louise’. The new song is one of heartfelt unrequited love, featuring beautiful harmonies among its sincere country pop.

Regarding the single Amy says, “‘Don’t Bring Louise’ is a true story, about a real girl that my ex-boyfriend dated. I started writing the song when I heard her name for the first time. I’d never met her but as soon as I heard her name I started building a picture of her and the lyrics started to form in my head. It’s about a feeling that gets reignited the first time you hear that the other person has moved on, even if you thought you were over it.”

‘Don’t Bring Louise’ follows the release of her highly praised singles ‘Hurts Like Paradise’ and ‘Undone’. Since emerging last year Amy has received support from the likes of The Times, 1883 Magazine, CelebMix and many more.

A burgeoning name on the UK live scene, Amy has just completed her first ever regional tour, where she played 19-dates across the country. She also performed at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton this summer.

In London, Amy has played at many famous venues in the city including Ronnie Scott’s, The Troubadour, The Bedford and The Social among many others. She also played as support to Jack Savoretti at Cadogan Hall.

While still fresh-faced, Amy comes armed with sharpened experience well beyond her years and is proving her self to be exciting new name on the singer/songwriter scene.

Avant-pop artist Jeremie Whistler shares new visual for ‘Smoke Signals’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

+ debut album ‘The Dawn’ due Fevruary 2019

“Brooding, atmospheric creation” – MusicMap

Emerging Parisian electronic singer / producer Jeremie Whistler, is pleased to announce details of his debut album ‘The Dawn’ due 2019 and will preempt it’s release with a haunting new visual for ‘Smoke Signals’.

He says: “For the ‘Smoke Signals’ video i wanted to play with the set up that i use on stage, an installation of origami/lights that turn on and off according to the music. I wanted to use the hypnotical potential of this installation to accompany the story of an interaction between two sides of myself : naive and evil. I was interested in playing with the notion of transformation with the help of drag artist Clemence Trü”.

Jeremie brings a strong visual concept to his work. From the dreamlike landscapes in the ‘Cold Heart’ video, to the trippy visuals of ‘Holding On’ (shot at the Hunting and Nature Museum in Paris), both directed by Rémy Disch, and the kaleidoscopic ‘Run Into The Sun’, directed by Jeremie himself. He now offers up a new visual clip for ‘Smoke Signals’, an enigmatic tale of unstoppable transformation. On stage, Jeremie wears an ornamental piece made of golden feathers created by artist Xavier Noel, and the band is surrounded with big paper origami that light up in tune with the music.

Described by French tastemaker publication Les Inrocks as “tour de force, an artist possessing a unique emotional fragility”. The acclaimed debut EP ‘Flakes’, co-produced with Angelo Foley (Christine & The Queens) and Apollo Noir (Tigersushi), drew comparisons with James Blake’s dark electronica ballads and Björk’s quirky eclecticism; and spawned the two hit singles ‘Cold Heart’ and ‘Run Into The Sun’. Having been ensconced in the studio writing, Jeremie is now ready to release his long player effort, ‘The Dawn’, 13 majestic tracks of dark, emotive electronica with a melacholic emotional core.

He says: “‘The Dawn’ is a collection of songs about surrealistic dreams and failed love stories. It heralds a new life, in which past hurts are left behind after they take shape. Sonically, i wanted to merge electronic and acoustic sounds and create lush and dark atmospheres. I also wanted to work as alone as possible to try and reach pure emotion, inviting now and then close collaborators.”

Jeremie wrote, composed and produced the album himself with the the help of band member Sylvain Ollivier and French electronic producer Saycet. Three tracks also include a string quartet (Pop Quartet, led by violinist Celia Triplet) and the album was entirely mixed by Sébastien Cannas at Capitaine Plouf studios.

CREAM with a K Unveils Video For ‘5:35’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae
DOWNLOAD/STREAM

Tokyo via London grunge-pop chanteuse Cream with a K (a.k.a. Lee Tatlock) returns today with her hazy new video for ‘5:35‘, taken from her upcoming self-titled debut album. Directed by Lawrence Randall and premiering on L’Officiel, the video was shot in the early hours on Tokyo’s Ginza Metro Line. Watch the video for ‘5:35‘ HERE.

“The idea was basically to spontaneously capture the natural, unglamorised side of Tokyo’s nightlife. Rather than a story it was all about the mood.” says Tatlock. “Basically it is ‘going home after a night out’, so that’s what we did and just hung out together and took footage around Shibuya until the morning 5:35am train on the Ginza Line. I wanted to get a glowy dreamy sci-fi vibe.”

A musician, visual artist and model, Cream with a K is most well known for her former involvement as the singer in the Japanese Pop band NEKO PUNCH (Universal Music Japan). Having cut her teeth in the entertainment industry in Tokyo, she decided it was time to reconnect with the West through Cream with a K in early 2016, her first fully English project since her start in music. Pulling her influences from her hometown of London, her adopted hometown of Tokyo and pairing them alongside fuzzy grunge tones and etherial pop vocals makes her first solo effort a surefire head turner.

Working alongside many noteworthy Japanese producers such as Takeshi Kobayashi, Hydain and Shingo Yasumoto and bilingual in Japanese and English, she also turned her hand to song and lyric writing for other Japanese and Korean artists. In Tokyo, seen as a cultural figure who links the UK and Tokyo Music scenes, she was the TV host of the Japanese Rock music TV Show NHK’s “Nippon Rocks” series.

Her debut self-titled album is out now in Japan exclusively at Tower Records and will see a worldwide release in early 2019.

“Fuzzy guitars paired with sticky sweet synths and Tatlock’s signature etherial vocals, her latest solo effort is equal parts Smashing Pumpkins, and St. Vincent – a refreshing burst of pop with integrity that pays homage to her favorite era” – C-Heads

“Merging fuzz toned sonic influences from her native London with that of her adopted home of Tokyo, her pitched pop vocal and penchant for 90s indie rock make for perfectly balanced treat” – The Line Of Best Fit

“The eclectic grunge of her solo project effectively blends her London roots with her Tokyo experience, showing as much lived experience as artsy aesthetic.” – L’Officiel

“Cream With A K mixes fuzzy 90s-toned indie rock with her deceptively sweet vocal and packs quite a punch” – Born Music

Alice In Chains announce ‘Rainier Fog’ film project

by the partae December 14, 2018

BAND EARN 9TH GRAMMY NOMINATION FOR NEW ALBUM
‘RAINIER FOG’
NOMINATED FOR ‘BEST ROCK ALBUM’

ANNOUNCE SPECIAL ‘RAINIER FOG’ FILM PROJECT
EPISODIC ROLLOUT WILL SPOTLIGHT EACH SONG ON THE ALBUM

UK & EUROPEAN TOUR DATES IN 2019
PLAYING WEMBLEY ARENA – MAY 25TH

Earlier this year, Alice In Chains released Rainier Fog (BMG), their first album in five years. It became the band’s first Top 10 UK album, also hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock, Alternative and Hard Music Charts and No. 1 on the iTunes Rock Album Chart, and has now earned them a much-deserved Grammy nomination for ‘Best Rock Album’. It’s the band’s 9th Grammy nod.

Today the band has announced a special Rainier Fog movie project titled ‘Black Antenna’, produced and directed by filmmaker Adam Mason. Inspired by the sound of Rainier Fog, Mason has created a stunning 90-minute sci-fi film which will be rolled out in ten episodic segments/videos beginning at the top of the new year, with each episode set to a different song from the album. A ‘Black Antenna’ preview can be seen here.

“I’m a long-time fan of the band,” says Mason. “And this was an opportunity to do something fresh and inspiring from an indie filmmaking side. The sound and vision between album and film are closely intertwined – it was a brilliant synergy that led to a really unique project.”

“We’ve always toyed with the idea of creating videos for every song on one of our albums,”says drummer Sean Kinney. “Not only did we do that for Rainier Fog, it got totally out of hand and we made a whole goddamn movie. Everything that will be seen in the videos will be footage from ‘Black Antenna’ to preface the complete film’s release.”

Rainier Fog – which can be heard here – marks a few firsts for the band: in addition to being their first album in five years, it’s their first album for BMG and their first time recording in their hometown of Seattle in more than 20 years. They recorded at Studio X, the same facility where they tracked 1995’s self-titled Alice In Chains album (back when the studio was known as Bad Animals). The Rainier Fog recording process also saw the band spend time at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles and at the Nashville studio of producer Nick Raskulinecz. Rainier Fog is the third straight Alice In Chains album recorded with Raskulinecz and engineer Paul Figueroa. The album was mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Tool).

The band celebrated the album’s release with a sold-out international tour that saw them playing to packed houses in over 20 countries around the world. The band return to Europe in May for a run of major headline dates and festivals including Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park in June as well as three UK shows, with a date at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena on the 24th and Wembley Arena on the 25th. These will be the biggest headline shows the band have played to date in the UK. Full dates can be found below.

About Shotty Horroh:

After emerging as a prominent voice in the battle rap scene in the early days of his career, Shotty Horroh switched gears in 2018 to a new sound in the form of his debut LP, ‘Salt of the Earth’. Kicking it off with the first single ‘Shudehill,’ Shotty established himself as an artist to watch as he continued to release passionate and intense political rock. Far Out Magazine speaks highly of ‘Shudehill’ saying “it feels more akin to early-Arctic Monkeys, unrelenting, imposing and powerful, it’s built on his delivery and a crumbling working class.” Whereas, Salt of the Earth has been heralded by Germany’s Stern Magazine in their 5/5 star album review as a testament to “how much power punk and hip-hop can have when they work together” and is praised as “masterfully melded – hip-hop versus indie rock,” by The Record. Both ‘Shudehill’ and ‘Stay For The Ride’ are among the 10 tracks featured on the album, out now.

The Remarkable Year of Wafia

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

WAFIA left a major mark on the musical landscape of 2018. With unanimous critical acclaim, over 100 million streams, her first headlining tour in Europe, sold-out shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, San Francisco, Toronto and throughout her home country of Australia, and debut performances at Red Rocks and Coachella, the confident yet unassuming indie pop powerhouse has proven to be a force to be reckoned with and one of the most exciting artists to watch for as we head into 2019.

As Nylon commented, “the buzz surrounding [Wafia] is remarkable”. The Fader praised her “golden, honeysuckle-sweet voice”, Teen Vogue called her one of the “artists you should be listening to before the end of 2018” and Vogue said that the 25-year-old singer is “single handedly shaking up the music industry with her purposeful pop.”

Her latest song ‘I’m Good’ has become one of the most buzzed-about songs of the past few months with V Magazine calling it “a breakup bop for the ages”, Refinery 29 highlighting the track’s relatability, saying “Wafia has reached into my soul and ripped out my experiences with breakups and turned them into a perfect song” and Billboard declaring that it “puts Wafia’s confident charisma in plain view.”

Watch a playful new homemade video for ‘I’m Good’ that Wafia recorded at home in Brisbane with her sister Hibba and puppy Khalil, HERE.

Along with I’m Good’, her VIII EP and her Louis the Child-collab on their track ‘Better Not’, Wafia has notches over 100 million streams in 2018 alone. EP cut ‘Bodies’ caught attention from the likes of Vice Broadly, Nylon and Ladygunn for its pointed lyrics addressing the Syrian refugee crisis. 2018 also found Wafia scoring her first appearance on the Billboard charts (‘Better Not’ on the Hot Dance/Electronc Songs chart), and major success on triple j with ‘I’m Good’ being named the 5th most played song of the year.

Wafia shares, ”2018 was so good to me. Between my ‘VIII’ EP coming out earlier in the year, to “Better Not” and then “I’m Good” & all the touring, this is one of those years that shaped me,” said Wafia, adding “To go out on the road and personally see how the music is connecting with people in places I’ve never been but my music has, is the most rewarding part of it all. I did a lot of writing this year too, and I’m most excited for the new year to share where my mind has been at. I feel like 2018 was just setting me up for a particularly special 2019.“

2019 will see exciting new music from Wafia, international tour dates, and more.

‘I’m Good’ is out now via Future Classic, buy/stream it here.

Dynamic trio RedHook round out the bill with their unique blend of rap-rock-electro-pop, drawing upon a diverse array of influences from Grimes to Rage Against The Machine. The group headlined the first-ever heavy music showcase at Australian Music Week 2018 and opened the inaugural Good Things Festival in Sydney this past weekend, all following the release of their most recent anthemic single ‘Turn Up The Stereotype‘.

Coming in hot off the back of an extensive run of 41 shows over the past two months, Hands Like Houses have performed to more than 15,000 people across the UK and Europe plus 8,000 people in the USA during their first international dates in support of -Anon. After three back-to-back sold out Australian tours, the band return home for their biggest headline shows yet in 2019 before returning to the US festival circuit to perform at Sonic Temple, Welcome to Rockville and Epicenter – one of only two Australian bands sharing the bill with revered artists including Foo Fighters, Korn, The Prodigy and more.

Closing out a year of widespread success, Hands Like Houses’ mammoth track ‘Monster’ has exceeded2.2 million Spotify streams and 450,000 YouTube plays, being picked up as the WWE Super Show-Down official theme song and broadcast to over 70,000 wrestling fans at the MCG in October. The track was run in a major sync on FOX8 for the network’s DC universe, and has been spotlighted in Amazon Music’s ‘Best of Rock 2018’ list. With a multitude of national radio airplay behind the track, the band also went on to take out the highly-coveted triple j Feature Album for -Anon which was praised across the board, including Kerrang! calling the album “a bold step into the unknown… their play for the big leagues.”

Hailing from Canberra, five-piece Hands Like Houses – Trenton Woodley (vocals), Alexander Pearson (guitar), Joel Tyrrell (bass), Matt Cooper (guitar), Matthew Parkitny (drums) – have spent the past decade thrilling audiences with their dynamic performances, sharing arena stages with heavyweights such asBring Me The Horizon and A Day To Remember at home, to performing internationally alongside legendary acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice Cooper and Disturbed on Download Festivaland Rock on the Range to name a few. With four albums under their belt, including two critically acclaimed Top 10 ARIA records, –Anon. which debuted at #4 and 2016’s Dissonants at #7, the band have sold over 100,000 records worldwide and amassed over 100 million Spotify streams.

Pip Blom shares new video for ‘The Shed’

PRAISE FOR PIP BLOM

‘Song You Need To Know: Pip Blom, ‘Come Home‘
Rolling Stone

“…a perfect millennial anthem.”
NPR

“Guitars! Indie rock band Pip Blom does not disappoint with their newest single “Come Home,” with lead singer Blom’s vocals amplifying the moody yet up-beat track.”
NYLON

“A potent set of lo-fi, ’90s-influenced rock with angst-fueled lyrics and addictive song hooks.”
KEXP

“Pip is producing quality, unique and enigmatic music way beyond her years.”
BBC Radio 6 Music

“Pip Blom Is Ready to Join the Ranks of 2018’s Rising Guitar Acts”
Noisey

“‘Amsterdam newcomers Pip Blom – are one of the country’s frontrunners, their Courtney Barnett-esque slacker-garage rock hybrid noisy in the best way.’”
DIY MAG

“Another stellar single from the young musician who continues to grow as an artist.”
Indie Shuffle

“Its lead single, ‘Pussycat,’ boasts a bothered tone and fiery guitars. On ‘Come Home,’ that intensity is laser-focused in frontwoman Pip Blom’s steady, creeping vocals.”
Stereogum

Amsterdam’s rising act PIP BLOM today shares her new video for ‘The Shed’. Directed by Kris Rimmer, the track is taken off her recently released Paycheck EP out now via London label Nice Swan Records.

‘The Shed’ caps off what has been a busy year for Pip Blom who kicked off her 2018 with a collision of guitars in the attitude-laden ‘Pussycat’ that landed her a spot on the BBC 6 Music’s A-list – the second time a Pip Blom single did so this year. She followed on with the release of her celebrated Paycheck EP featuring lead single ‘Come Home‘ which saw spot rotation on triple j and acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, DIY Mag, NPR, Noisey and more. The year was rounded out but the bands debut UK headline tour (including a sold-out Lexington show) and supports alongside The Breeders, Franz Ferdinand and Garbage – all big feats for someone in their first year in music.

The Paycheck EP is out now on Nice Swan Records.
Buy/stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes Music, and more now.

RICHMOND WELCOMES HARLOW – A NEW EXPANSIVE PUB, GARDEN BAR AND BASEMENT

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

Harlow, Richmond’s flavour-packed, good-times charged pub is now open. Bringing new life to what was the old Great Britain Hotel, the 300pax Church Street property has been reborn as an all-occasions destination, with a spacious outdoor courtyard, basement and balcony dining.

Suited to all ages, occasions and tastes, Harlow offers a variety of versatile spaces and experiences within the new-look pub. Guests can start at the ground floor bar and dining area, before stepping out into the sprawling sun-drenched courtyard, complete with a separate entrance for those who want to bring along their four-legged friends. When the sun goes down, they can retreat to the neon-lit basement bar, with low booth seating and a dimly lit metal mesh bottle display. Music remains at the heart of the venue, with the soundtrack as diverse as the venue itself.

Harlow’s love of music carries through to the menu, full of pub classics with modern twists and vibrant flavours. Executive Chef Telina Menzies has designed a menu that can be experienced the same way people would a gig. Just like their stage counterpart, the opener starts the feast off in style – like fried chicken, with pickled watermelon and blue cheese mayo or cheeseburger empanadas with special sauce. For the support act, guests can tuck into the H-low cheeseburger, complete with cheese, pickles, Harlow’s burger sauce, lettuce, tomato and onion. As a headliner, Harlow is serving classic pub favourites including the spicy meatball melt with smoked mozza, basil and crisps; the prawn roll, served with a side of salt and vinegar chips; and the ‘snack pack’ kebab, a decadent wrap made with lamb, chips, garlic yoghurt, chilli sauce and cheese. There is no party quite like the after party, so to top off the meal, Ha serves up mini gin and juice pops, made with gin, tonic, orange bitters, rosemary and chocolate, and the BIG Mess, Harlow’s take on the classic meringue dessert. Large groups are encouraged to BBQ the Harlow way with a pre-paid BBQ, where the chef slings proteins on the grills to a backdrop of 80s and 90s bangers on the decks.

Sitting alongside an extensive list of wines and beers, Harlow’s Mark Proctor has designed a cocktail list broken down into three different themes – Hip Hop, Pop and Heavy Metal. Much like their music counterpart, these cocktails have been inspired by the songs and artists of each genre, with Hip Hop’s Gin N Juice cocktail featuring Four Pillars gin, elderflower and cranberry juice, Pop’s California Girls with citrus vodka, peach liqueur, pinto gris, orange juice and egg white and Heavy Metal’s Voodoo People cocktail, with white rum, spiced rum, orgeat and fruit juice.

“Harlow is all about having a great time, just like your mate’s place you never want to leave” says Ben Hehir, Harlow’s manager. “We want Harlow to be the place where people can pop in for a casual lunch on a Saturday afternoon and then end up dancing the night away. Come back in on the Sunday with the fam and do it all over again”.

Harlow is open throughout the Christmas season, except for Christmas Day. Harlow will also be open for walk ins on New Year’s Eve, with free entry for all guests. Those wanting to recover and start off the new year in typical Aussie fashion, Harlow is hosting a Backyard BBQ recovery session on New Year’s Day, opening at 12pm.

Concrete Surfers

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae
What is your name and role within Concrete Surfers?

Hey! I’m Jovi and I sing and play guitar.

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?
We are currently based in Brisbane and we wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else! Brisbane has such a close knit music community where it’s so easy to make friends and be around nice, likeminded people. We are pretty lucky in this little city that everyone in the music industry here is so supportive of each other and get really psyched when they sell out a show, or go on a big tour and it’s just really really nice.

How did the band start?

Back in high school Trent, Jamie and I used to play in another band just playing covers, but it didn’t really work out with our singer at the time so we parted ways but decided that we still wanted to play music together so the three of us formed as a 3-piece and I thought that I would just give singing a go haha. Now Sean is in the band too as a guitar player and it just feels nice and complete! We wouldn’t want to have it any other way.

You’ve had a rad two years with shows playing bands like Good Doogs, White Blanks, Pist Idiots, Royal Blood, Ruby Fields, The Pretty Littles, how has your live show progressed since you started out?

When we fist started we were playing pretty small clubs and bars in the out-skirts of Fortitude valley and I guess we just got added to better lineups as time moved on! Releasing music definitely helped keep the ball rolling too. I guess just playing together a lot live has helped us progress and now we don’t even really have to think about what we are doing on stage. We can just have fun and make the most of it!

You’ve also featured on awesome lineups; the Bigsound Pre Party and Against the Grain festival with bands City Calm Down, Horror My Friend, Good Boy, Tiny Little Houses and Sweater Curse to name a few! How do your shows usually come about and what do you most enjoy about playing live?

Thanks! We are so lucky in Brisbane that everyone knows each other pretty well, so with lineups like Against the Grain it’s pretty much playing with bands we have played with before so it’s super friendly and fun. I think the best part about playing live is being able to look at the four of us on stage and see that we are all just having so much fun and it’s probably the best feeling for me personally. What makes that even better is looking out to the crowd and seeing everyone smiling and singing along with us; It feels pretty good knowing that our music can make so many people happy.

I hear that you are currently finalising your 2nd EP for Release in February/March with an accompanying tour, what has influenced the sound and songwriting for the EP?

The biggest thing sound wise for this EP is the songs have turned out to be quite a bit heavier both sonically and from a lyrical point of view from our previous releases. I think shedding light on issues like mental illness and politics has been a big focal point of my writing in the past year or so and that can definitely be heard in these songs.

Where have you been recording?

We recorded the EP at swan pond studios on a farm in Boonah which is about an hour away from Brisbane. Our friend Ali Richardson engineered the whole thing over 3 days. The best part about being out there was that if things were becoming tense in the Studio we could just take a walk around the paddocks or kick a footy around and I think this helped us produce a better end product.

What programs/equipment have you been using throughout the recording process?

Um in terms of instrumentation we tried to use as much of the gear we use live so it’s easier to recapture the sound when we play the songs live. Pretty much just fender guitars and amps and a whole bunch of overdrive and fuzz pedals. Trent actually used a Hofner violin bass which was different but really worked within the mix. We recorded using Protools and tried to keep it fairly simple.

Your Single Miscommunication just hit 70,000 plays on Spotify 1 year after its release! What do you attribute to the success of this track?

Yeah we are all really stoked on that! I think that song has been so successful because it has lyrics that everyone can relate to and combined with a few catchy chord progressions it turned out to be a song that we love playing too.

What do you like to do away from music?

Lately I’ve been getting back into skating which has been really good as a physical outlet and a way of clearing my head, other than that we just like hanging out really hahaha, I sometimes like to shoot film photography when I have the time which is also another good creative outlet. Trent’s pretty passionate about reptiles so he finds himself catching and releasing different lizards in his backyard.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Lately I’ve been really digging bands like Shame, Beach Fossils, IDLES, some old hip-hop, and doom bands Conan and Bong-Ripper.

What’s planned for 2019?

Lots and lots of touring next year! Hoping to head down the east coast as much as we can next year and write some more music.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

My personal favourite food would have to either be pasta, ramen or pizza! And as far as hanging out, our favourite place is the Warehouse where we rehearse and write our music.

THE WOMBATS RELEASE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR ‘OCEANS’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

How do you shoot a music video in the middle of a jam packed Australian tour?

With a song named Oceans, simply drop front man Murph into the ocean to shoot a one take video 30 minutes before soundcheck on St. Kilda Beach, Melbourne, and let the rest of the magic happen in post.

Produced by Be-Hookd Digital and directed by Silas Armstrong, the band’s social team in the UK came up with the simple idea in a label meeting. Six weeks later armed with a GoPro, bluetooth waterproof speaker and a phone, they had convinced Murph to brave the cold sea with nothing but a camera man, tour manager and his swimming trunks.

Taking inspiration from the lyrics of Oceans, the animations were added based on Murph’s improvised reactions, bringing to life his thoughts and fears in the form of cartoon shark fins and rattle snakes, giving the fans a reason to watch the new video for Oceans over and over again.

While in Australia the band also recorded a very special Christmas themed Like A Version for tripe j, putting their own spin on the timeless Bing Crosby classic White Christmas.

Melbourne’s Skydeck sign with Dinosaur City Records; share debut single ‘Live Bait’

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

“[Live Bait is] a tense, sparse track built mostly around synth and bass that snaps into a higher gear as Kearton yelps through the chorus.” – Noisey

Best of the Week (Playlist) – Apple Music

Melbourne duo Skydeck today share their debut single, ‘Live Bait’, and announce their signing to Dinosaur City Records and Burger Records (USA).

Named after the monumental skyscraper that frames Melbourne’s reddening sky, Skydeck is good friends and long-term housemates Dominic Kearton (Pregnancy) and Mitch Clemens (Ciggie Witch). The pair make surreal, anti-capitalist pop that focuses on themes of desire and fear.

Premiering via Noisey right now, Live Bait is the first track from the bands 11-track debut album, Eureka Moment, due March 2019.

Inspired by long hours spend working at a rural pub, Kearton explains to Noisey, “I moved to Castlemaine, in Victoria’s north, and spent seven or eight months working at a really weird out-of-town truck driver pub and I just worked from 11AM until 5PM and basically just sat in the front bar and watched pensioners bet on the horse racing on the TV. It was pretty strange and confronting but I really needed a job so I stuck it out. It’s helped me write a lot of songs and think about Australia a lot as a place, so I guess it was an eye-opening experience.”

Live Bait is out via Dinosaur City Records/Burger Records (USA)now. Buy/stream it on Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud and more.
