Vujaday in Barbados announces Bob Moses, Sasha, Lee Burridge, Moodymann + more for lineup

by the partae December 29, 2018
written by the partae

Following their successful debut earlier this year in Barbados, Vujaday Music Festival has returned to announce a stacked phase one lineup in preparation for their second year. The 2019 edition will take place from April 3-7 and will once again take place in different venues all across the stunning Caribbean island. This will give festival-goers the chance to take in a new experience and venue each day.

The phase one lineup for Vujaday 2019 features legendary Welsh DJ and producer Sasha, a DJ set from iconic Canadian electronic duo Bob Moses, Detroit house and techno staple Moodymann, All Day I Dream founder Lee Burridge, a live performance from the Detroit based sibling duo Octave One, Vivrant label founder and renowned Swedish musician Jeremy Olander, Brooklyn house duo Bedouin, Life and Death founder DJ Tennis, Berlin house aficionado YokoO, members of the fan-favorite Desert Hearts collective Mikey Lion and Lee Reynolds, American production duo and Crew Love members Soul Clap, Women on Wax founder DJ Minx, Sheik ‘N’ Beik founder Rechulski, respected Toronto resident Nitin, and fellow Toronto native and current Barcelona resident Jade.

Many more names will be added to the lineup in the near future. Vujaday will also be announcing what venues they will be taking over shortly, and have also announced they will be hosting a new daytime party series for the first time this year. Details regarding this exciting new addition to the already jam-packed Vujaday experience will be announced as the festival nears closer.

Venue highlights from last year included Bellevue Plantation, a 100-acre property built in 1735 that included a pool, polo fields, and lush gardens surrounding the property. Another favorite was Cornwall House, which allowed those in attendance to witness a breathtaking sunrise while overlooking the gorgeous Eastern Coast of Barbados. Other venues were located directly on the beach and gave those in attendance the chance to sink their feet in the sand throughout the event.

With its dedication to providing attendees with an experience they’ve never seen or felt before, Vujaday pulls all the stops to create an unforgettable journey for attendees. The event spans over the course of five days, allowing festival-goers to be fully immersed into the culture of Barbados while traveling throughout the island to experience the unique venues that Vujaday takes place at.

Early bird tickets for 2019 are currently on sale and can be purchased here. Super early bird tickets have already sold out. More info about travel and additional details can be found on the Vujaday website, and you can watch their 2018 aftermovie to get a better taste of what the festival has to offer.

Brooks, Infuze & SLVR deliver second round of remixes of Martin Garrix feat. Mike Yung’s Dreamer

by the partae December 29, 2018
written by the partae
LISTEN HERE

Brooks’ chopped-up electro house version begins peacefully, building with muted keys and warm bass before exploding into a stuttering, euphoric groove. An epic main break makes good use of the melody before returning to the irresistible groove.

New York producer Infuze serves up a bright and breezy house number that combines classic stabby house chords with a plump bassline. He cuts up Yung’s ad-libs to great effect to provide another layer of rhythmic energy that really drives the track along.

SLVR gives the track one of his inimitable Booshi makeovers, taking it in a very different direction with those dark sounds. The breakdowns are tense and dramatic, and the resonating bass sounds of his killer groove is powerful and moody.

Gianluca Vacchi teams up with Neapolitan singer Alessio on Wagliò

Gianluca Vacchi teams up with Neapolitan singer Alessio on Wagliò

by the partae December 27, 2018
written by the partae

Gianluca Vacchi’s passion for all things Latin continues with the vibrant flavour of his latest single Wagliò, an impossible-to-resist collab with fellow Italian vocalist, Alessio.

Gentle tropical flavours colour this irresistible track with its eclectic global sound. Vacchi’s spoken word vocal gives the intro a dramatic feel before a flamenco-flavoured guitar line cascades over a chunky tribal beat. Next comesAlessio’s impassioned vocal in Neapolitan dialect, oozing over delicate guitar picking and warm bass tones. A big build-up drops us back into that big beat, making for a triumphant climax. It’s the sound of a thousand beach and boat parties kicking into overdrive, perfectly embodying the spirit of everything Vacchi stand for.

Gianluca Vacchi is the fast-living, life-loving business entrepreneur-turned-DJ-and-artist whose social media antics have amassed him an enormous following. With a long list of celebrity friends and musical collaborators, he is quickly forging himself a name as a major name in the Latin electronic scene. With his VIBRA! residency this summer at Amnesia in Ibiza and hit singles likeSigamos Bailando and Trump It!, he is making his love of music known to the wider world.

Alessio hails from Naples and is one of the leading lights of city’s ‘neo melodica’ scene. The genre blends traditional Neapolitan love songs with pop, Spanish guitar and electronic elements to powerful effect. With 11 albums to his name and acting credits in Gommorah (both the TV series and film), he is a genuine star.

Manovski

by the partae December 27, 2018
written by the partae

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there?

Im based in London and work out of Tileyard studios. I love it here, its one of the main music hubs in the world so there’s always a steady flow of talented people to collaborate with.

How did you first start playing music?

I first started out as a drummer in Sydney, my father and twin brother are both musicians so there was always lots of music around me growing up. The first time I was in a professional studio was when I was about 7 , my father let me to record a song with his band and that definitely left me wanting to spend more time in the studio. I was so fascinated with all the gear in the control room and the funny thing was that the engineer was running an old school analogue studio completely blind!

You have worked with many artists, what do you most enjoy about the process of working with other musicians?

Ive been lucky enough to work with a range of different artists, I think what I like most is everyday is different and everyone has their own vibe so it never gets boring. Also I feel that I’m constantly learning new things or seeing things from a different perspective and almost everyone introduces me to a new amazing artist I’ve never heard of!

How do your collaborations usually come about?

These days sessions usually come about via my management or publisher, from there I just keep working with the people I click with.

How did you come to move to London and how did you go about embedding yourself within the London music scene?

Im originally from Sydney Australia where I was friends with a fellow producer/writer by the name of Tonino Speciale for a long time. Most years at Christmas he’d come back to Australia from the UK and we would play shows together and he would tell me about how different the UK scene is compared to Sydney. So I decided to take a trip to check it out and haven’t really left. Tonino definitely played a major role in introducing me to the network of people I have around me today.

How do you approach your solo music as compared to working with others?

When I’m working with other people its usually a mixture of all our visions for the song so theres usually lots of inspiration to draw from whereas when I work on the Manovski stuff I have so much freedom to create whatever I want I usually spend a lot of time trying out different versions of the song until one really resonates with me…. This often takes a lot more time lol.

How do you usually go about writing music?

As a producer I’m usually in charge of the music side of things however I do get involved with melody and lyrics where needed. I definitely prefer writing from scratch with people in a room as apposed to making a beat for someone to write on top of. This way all elements guide each other and were not confined by a set of chords or rules.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Loud Luxury ‘Body’ has been on repeat for a while!

What or who influences your sound and songwriting?

I definitely get influenced by whats hot at the moment , especially when it comes to production. When I hear something new and fresh it pushes me to try new approaches to getting sounds.

What do you enjoy about music?

The fact that it crosses all boundaries and is something that brings us all together … doesn’t matter where you are in the world if theres a good song playing on the radio people react to it!

What have you been working on in 2018?

Ive had an amazing 2018, have done lots of writing for other artists a few of which I’m not allowed to talk about yet but am very excited about!

What do you have planned for 2019?

Theres quite a few Manovski records in the works… some very cool collaborations both in the UK and USA happening in 2019!

What do you like to do away from music?

Usually the simple things in life that don’t require much thought…. Walking the dog, cooking, Netflix!

Favourite food and place to hangout?

For food it’s a tossup between Bombay burrito and Honest burger in Islington… to hang out its at home with my wife and newborn son ‘Sonny’.

Adelaide native Sonny Fodera returns for Australian tour

by the partae December 27, 2018
written by the partae

Tour Dates

Sunday 30th December: Beyond The Valley, Victoria
Monday 31st December: The Ivy, Sydney
Tuesday 1st January: Field Day, Sydney
Tuesday 1st January: Habitat GP, Perth
Saturday 12th January: A Day Off, Melbourne
Friday 18th January: Garden Party, Wollongong
Saturday 26th January: The Met, Brisbane

Australian Sonny Fodera’s career has sky-rocketed in the past few years. His compilation album on Defected Records, alongside his popular productions on labels like Green Velvet’s Cajual Records, Seth Troxler’s Visionquest label and more, has won him fans throughout the industry and general public alike.

Originally inspired by the 4/4 groove of Derrick Carter, he has now developed and toured his own brand of bassline-driven house across the world, demand for his sound resulting in a 30-date tour across the UK and the USA two years ago.

To date Sonny Fodera has achieved a lot in his illustrious career: A Beatport number one; a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix; three studio albums; EP’s on Cajual Records, Repopulate Mars, Suara and, of course, Defected. The Adelaide-native has a strong case to stake his claim as one of Australia’s biggest and most successful house music exports.

As today’s fledgeling house revival attains new heights so does the difficulty in standing out amid its thriving pool of talents, however, Sonny Fodera continues to scale the mounting hierarchy whilst making it look easy. Named by Mixmag as one of their ‘Hot Six’, Sonny Fodera has had an impeccable 2013 with releases on a slew of today’s biggest house labels including a debut album, Moving Forward, on the reputable Cajual Records. Renowned for his smooth technical mixing, last year saw Fodera play at some of the world’s greatest clubs such as Air, Ministry of Sound, DC10, Booom! as well as a residency at Ushuaia Tower.

Sonny’s journey as a producer begun at the tender age of 16 when he was making Hip Hop, but it was not until the likes of Derrick Carter, Inland Knights and James Curd visited his homeland that his passion for four-four took firm shape. Fast forward in time and the budding 27 year old has stood shoulder to shoulder with his inspirational heroes of whom now all credit him for his dexterity both behind the decks and in the studio with Fodera receiving praise from some of the genres most established veterans, from Cajmere to Derrick Carter all the way to the ‘Godfather of House’ Frankie Knuckles.

Such recognition from the industry greats is a testament to Fodera’s knowledge and talents. Proving he is anything but a neophyte, the producer’s sub-genre ranging productions attest to his immense understanding of the genre with his tracks being supported by some of today’s biggest DJs. Cajmere was so fond of Fodera’s abilities he began collaborating with him as well as offering him an album deal on his label Cajual Records.

“We just really vibe together and get along really well,” says Fodera on his relationship with the legendary house stalwart. “We understand each other’s jokes and he’s extremely easy to work with. He’s just an awesome guy and acts like a mentor to me and has helped me a lot. He’s very consistent and pushes you, which is good.”

According to Fodera, last year’s highlights were “playing with David Morales and Simon Dunmore at Defected’s party at Ushuaia Tower, DJing at DC10 in Ibiza, getting signed to Defected and also releasing an album on Cajual Records”. These are all remarkable feats for any artist his age and require immense work ethic and passion, traits which Fodera has in spades. When asked about the biggest challenges a new producer faces Fodera states it is “getting signed to the right labels”, however looking back on his discography only proves this is a challenge he continues to pass with flying colours having had releases on the likes of Defected, DFTD, Cajual Records, Farris Wheel Recordings, Guesthouse, and of course his very own label Beatdown – all within the last year.

Now in the age of the popularisation of electronic music the young breakthrough producer is a reminder of a stronger than ever underground scene as he continues to showcase his true-house sound to every corner of the globe. Looking to continue last year’s momentum into 2014, the burgeoning artist has collaborations planned with some much respectedartists including further work with Cajmere and Gene Farris, another album on Cajual Records due in March as well as a touring calendar that will undoubtedly top the previous one. With no sign of resting on his laurels Sonny Fodera aims to persist with the fervour and integrity that has got him this far, forming a bright and promising future where he will undoubtedly be looked up to by future generations himself.

Rising DJ / producer Henri drops Sofi Tukker + Kincaid remixes for ‘Last Dance’

by the partae December 20, 2018
written by the partae

Having been ensconced in the studio recording new material for 2019, leftfield electronic DJ / producer Henri is pleased to announce details of two quality remixes by New York-based duo Sofi Tukker and London’s deep house talent Kincaid for her new track “Last Dance” featuring Imogen Rose.

She says: “Sofi Tukker and I have been talking about collaborating for a while now, since meeting at a New York club where I was DJing a few years ago. Tukker even came into the studio with me to work on one of the previous incarnations of ‘Last Dance’. Though the music we release is very different, we share a love of club culture and it’s been great to hear how their minimal, almost gothic interpretation has ended up having its own identity. Their staccato melody, driving drums & rolling bassline adds an ethereal feel to the vocals that takes the track to a completely different place. Kincaid did a remix for one of my previous tracks a few years ago and I’ve been following his career ever since. His take on ‘Last Dance’ is charmingly experimental and intricately produced which is what he’s always so good at. His downtempo take on the track is scattered with vocal snippets and delays, eerie pads and loud, almost out of tune computer game synth bleeps”.

Following her release on Anjunadeep earlier this year, DJ, producer and songwriter Henri recently returned with “Last Dance.” The track is laced with cinematic emotion with the ethereal Imogen Rose’s piercingly high, haunting vocal hook reminiscent of a war cry. Beginning with a classical dark, moody piano arpeggio, “Last Dance” constantly vacillates between tension and release, driven by thumping beats, synth stabs and melodic percussive builds. It is both sexual and foreboding, the last dance between two lovers and also our last dance with the world we are so successfully destroying. “The visuals of Lars Von Trier’s film ‘Melancholia’ mirror the sentiment I envisioned when writing the song”, says Henri. “It’s deceivingly beautiful while simultaneously about the end of the world.”

Over the last few years up-and-coming London-based DJ, Henri, has been fine-tuning her remixing and production skills, having reached number two on Hype Machine with her melodic house remix of Flight Facilities’ “Two Bodies”, releasing “Sunshine of Your Love” on Armada Deep last year and “Hiding” on Anjunadeep earlier this year.

YAK TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘PURSUIT OF MOMENTARY HAPPINESS’, LISTEN TO NEW SINGLE ‘FRIED’

by the partae December 20, 2018
written by the partae
They’ve set a marker for every borderline-insane newcomer emerging in the next decade.” – DIY

“Every so often a new band will arrive clamouring that guitar music isn’t dead, as if they’re mid-CPR. Yak have crash-landed clutching its still-beating heart, wearing an irrepressible grin.” – NME

“Yak shoot from the hip with an impetuous first-timers’ racket that’s rarely short of breathtaking.” – Q

There’s always been an element of chaos to the London-based trio Yak, which made their exhilarating live shows so memorable. It’s an approach that they take to a new level with their second album ‘Pursuit of Momentary Happiness’, which will be released on February 8th under a new deal with Virgin EMI / Caroline Australia. Yak provide another taster of the album by sharing the new single ‘Fried’.

The creation of the album saw frontman Oli Burslem stand on the precipice between obsession and self-destruction. He sacrificed everything for his artistic vision, including his own financial security and mental health. Who invests every last penny into recording, to the point where they become homeless?

“I don’t want it to be a boo-hoo story,” says Burslem. “It was fun doing it. It’s nice to push yourself to the limit, and I can say now that I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks, because it’s a document of that time, and it’s honest and open, and I couldn’t have done or given much more.”

STREAM SINGLE ‘FRIED’
The result is a rare white-knuckle ride of an album in which his extreme commitment pulsates through every moment – much like Spiritualized’s ’Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’ andTame Impala’s ’Innerspeaker’, both of whose creators had a part to play in its genesis – ranging from the gonzo-fuzz chaos of tracks like ‘Blinded By The Lies’ through to the Roy Orbison-inspired heartbreak of ‘Words Fail Me’.

Yak had blazed a trail through the indie rock scene with their debut album ‘Alas Salvation’ and ended that era of their career with a landmark show at London’s Scala. Burslem and drummer Elliot Rawsonwere eager to make a second record, but bassist Andy Jones departed for a new life in Australia. A chance meeting with Jay Watson from Tame Impala’s touring band resulted in Burslem hatching a plan to rehearse together in Melbourne before quickly recording the album at Tame mainman Kevin Parker’sstudio in Perth – with Burslem stopping in Tokyo to focus on writing.

It didn’t work out. Burslem returned to the UK with no home, no money and no album. 18 hazy months passed, during which Yak found their new bassist Vinny Davies and then a fresh focus. Yak were introduced to Spiritualized chief Jason Pierce through his bandmate John Coxon, and Pierceencouraged them that they still had something worth pursuing. That resulted in a new deal with Virgin EMI, and Burslem committed to sorting out his personal situation… just as soon as he’d finished the album.

They headed to RAK Studios with producer Marta Salogni (Björk, Django Django) and spent 10 hectic days recording 29 songs, 11 of which feature on the album. Burslem then withdrew to a small home studio with Pierce to apply some finishing touches. Pierce added slide guitar and vocals to the finale‘This House Has No Living Room’, which sails out on Burslem’s field recording of birdsong. Against all advice, his dedication resulted in one final trip, this time to New York to completely remix the album.

One of life’s certainties is the warm embrace of an old memory that reminds you of good times. What about that time when Nina Kraviz, Ben Klock and Bicep played at the Caulfield Racecourse? Those were good times. Or what about that time when Dixon, Mano Le Tough and Recondite went above and beyond to soundtrack one of the best days we’ve certainly had? Stop it, we want to go back…

In fact, we can’t let it go and we have to go back. So let’s do it – and this might be the last one ever so let’s make it one to remember.

This upcoming February novel will activate the Caulfield Racecourse once again for smalltown – and we’ve invited some of the best to oversee the day…

Axel Boman. George Fitzgerald. Tom Trago. Kate Miller. Rev Lon

Axel Boman (SWE)

We welcome back Axel Boman, the ringleader of Sweden’s eccentric house collective Studio Barnhus. It has been two years since this merrymaking master of music enthralled us at Pitch Music & Arts so expect him to come in hot. No one dabbles harder in sweet frivolities than this Swedish King of House. Expect Fun with a capital F.SoundCloud

George Fitzgerald (UK)

By day George Fitzgerald lives an unassuming life as a citizen of London, inhabiting production studios to make music on revered labels like Domino and Hotflush. By night he takes control of global clubs to spread his gospel of fluid house and shimmering techno. Don’t be fooled: His modest demeanour disguises the fact that his music is powerful enough to make you cut your hair, revert to his cult and convert to a way of living that seems more safe and comforting than the current rubbish being doled out by society’s political instability and social anxieties. SoundCloud

Tom Trago (NL)

We don’t understand why Tom Trago has not been officially elected the Mayor of Nightlife in Amsterdam. He is well versed in subverting you from life’s daily grind, and his sets should come with a guarantee that you will be present and in the moment: in fact, his DJ sets may or may not have been compared to possess the healing power of a 24-hour Buddhist meditation session. This Dekmantel favourite is entirely undeniable and utterly engaging. SoundCloud

Kate Miller (AUS)

A born and bred Melbournian, Kate Miller has been on a tear to become a beacon of originality, a shining light in a scene where mediocrity is unfortunately all too common. The Kate Miller playbook consists of tricky electro moves and exquisite techno rhythms that has seen her become a regular in the Berlin scene and clubs like Panorama Bar. Not one to play it safe, she can read a dance floor like a well trained academic.

Rev Lon (AUS)

In a city filled with talent, it can be difficult to stand out. But this is a trait that Rev Lon is displaying with minimal effort. She dabbles in techno and house with a touch of breaks, and are currently adding her own flavour to a sound that is in need of some reviving. Remember the name of Rev Lon.

MIDDLE KIDS PERFORM “MISTAKE” ON THE LATE LATE SHOW WITH JAMES CORDEN

by the partae December 20, 2018
written by the partae

Middle Kids are wrapping up what has been a massive year with their final performance of 2018 on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The Sydney trio delivered a rousing version of hit single “Mistake” from the acclaimed debut album ‘Lost Friends’. The band will return home in February performing at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Party In The Paddock and Mountain Sounds.

The performance capped off a nine week world tour which included their support on Bloc Party’s European & UK tour, followed by a headline U.S. tour including multiple sold out dates. ‘Lost Friends’ was also nominated for Best Rock Album in the 2018 ARIA Awards and has made the longlist for the 2018 Australian Music Prize.

Earlier this week, Middle Kids were announced as the most played act on triple j in 2018, a stellar achievement having been awarded the prestigious J Award for Album of the Year last month. “Lost Friends possesses a chemistry that can’t be faked. “Mistake”, “On My Knees”, “Bought It”, “Never Start”; each broil with intensity and insecurity before exploding into cathartic, celebratory choruses. Tim Fitz and Harry Day bring a wealth of energy and inventive production but it’s Hannah Joy’s vocals that are the heart and soul of their music. Her shiver-inducing voice ranges from beautifully controlled to heedlessly raw as she renders the drama, confusion, and honesty in Middle Kids’ lyrics. ” triple j

The band are already working on new music for 2019 and judging on the strength of their recent single “Salt Eyes” the best is yet to come.
