West Set returns this weekend with the festival taking over the inner west suburb of Footscray with live music programming on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from Friday 14 – Sunday 30 October offering Free Entry for all shows.
West Set is a live music event produced by the City of Maribyrnong and presented by ‘On The Road Again’, a Victorian Government initiative to support the return of live music events across Victoria.
This year’s program partners include Melbourne International Jazz Festival, ThinOzone, Finding Figaro, VU Music Agency and Kindred Band Room who have curated an incredible line-up of Contemporary, Latin, Ethio and Brazilian jazz, Classical Indian, Congolese Rumba, Chilean Folk/Rock, Afro Beat, Dub, Reggae, Folktronic, chilled Electronica, Rock, and Pop styles of music.
West Set features not only the best of our homegrown talent but some international talents including POOKIE (Live), Black Jesus Experience, Jamie Tiller (UK), Birdz, DJ JNETT, Colette, Amaru Tribe, Chikchika, Parvyn, Belda (IND), Darcy Justice, Eden Burns (NZ) and more all at Kindred Bandroom, music school and shop Chasing Sound, along with pop-up venues Las Palmas and Railway Reserve, all located on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation.
The key venue highlight for this year’s event is the pop-up venue Las Palmas located on the Footscray Library forecourt creating a 40/50’s inspired Latin/Cuban styled jazz bar. The team at the City of Maribyrnong wishes to transport people to a different time and country, with Ethiopian flourishes in the design referencing the Ethiopian cafes that surround the library on Barkly street.
Kicking things off at Railway Reserve on Friday 14 October West Set + Finding Figaro present Jamie Tiller (UK), Adriana and Daniel Pisano from 5pm – 11pm. The UK’s Jamie Tiller has an often unrivalled knack for rescuing a seemingly endless supply of discarded musical gems from the murky depths of the record underworlds. Jamie will perform alongside locals Adriana and Daniel Pisano who will have you dancing to traditional and contemporary sounds.
Saturday 15 October Kindred Bandroom presents Solidarity Sound System celebrating ten years of sound business and renegade resistance. A decade on and it’s time to celebrate the many sessions, collaborations and protests the sound has powered. It’s time to recognise and give thanks to all those that have supported and worked with the sound! It’s time to turn up the sound and lively up the resistance.
Solidarity selectors line up will include collaborators from the past and the present Combat Wombat, Mista Monk, Uncle Robbie, Joe Dubs, Marco Irie Vibe, Binghi Fire, Sista Sara, Jesse I, Dopeman, Papa Bicho, Killah Keys from 6pm – 1am.
Las Palmas is set to come to life for the first time on Saturday 15 October, playing host to Black Jesus Experience, Solomon Sisay and GP Saxy Ensemble from 6:15 – 10 pm presented by West Set and Melbourne International Jazz Festival. One not to miss, 10-piece Ethio-funk ensemble Black Jesus Experience will bring their danceable alloy of traditional Ethiopian song and 21st century grooves to the Footscray Library Forecourt with support from local Ethio-Jazz saxophonist Solomon Sisay and multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer GP Saxy Ensemble with his blending Afrobeat and highlife and jazz, GP Saxy promises to transport you to the depths of Lagos with this collection of afro-funky sounds.
To close out the first weekend West Set + Melbourne International Jazz Festival Present a family-friendly event with all ages welcome, La Influencia and Kidstruments (LIVE) by Playable Streets from 11am – 2pm. Afro-Cuban powerhouse La Influencia featuring Salvador Persico (Blue King Brown) and Daniel Mougerman (The Bamboos) will perform original music, as well as the music of modern Cuban legends. Kidstruments (LIVE) by Playable Streets will get the morning started with their imagined instruments of bright young minds turning them into real-life musical gadgets.
