Five years ago Sampha released his debut album Process via Young / Remote Control Records. The seminal album was met with widespread critical-acclaim and went on to be named the 2017 Mercury-Prize winner. Today, marks the 5th anniversary and in celebration Sampha releases a special 12-track bonus edition of Processwhich includes two newly available songs ‘Inbetween and Overseas’ and ‘Answer’.
Process, which features singles ‘(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano’, ‘Timmy’s Prayer’ and ‘Blood On Me’, is an emotionally raw and achingly beautiful statement on loss, grief and self-discovery. A creation from Sampha, who worked with Scottish-born producer Rodaidh McDonald (Mustafa, The xx, David Bryne), this album saw Sampha step into the spotlight for the first time to tell his own story.
Prior to releasing his debut album, Sampha had established himself as a sought-after studio collaborator having lent his vocal, production, and songwriting talents to a range of standout releases from homegrown UK contemporaries SBTRKT, FKA twigs, and world-renowned superstars like Drake, Beyonce, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and Solange. Since then, Sampha has continued to build on these successes through recent collaborations with Alicia Keys, Everything Is Recorded, Mustafa, and Headie One.
The debut album was released in musical form in 2017, alongside a 37-minute rich visual contextualisation of the same name. Filmed between Freetown, Sierra Leone and Morden, South London, Process was directed by the Los Angeles Emmy and Grammy-nominated director Kahlil Joseph; the artist and filmmaker behind some of the world’s most exciting and forward-thinking visuals, including ‘Lemonade’ (Beyonce), ‘Until The Quiet Comes’ (Flying Lotus), and ‘m.A.A.d’ (Kendrick Lamar). The film is still available to view via Apple MusicHERE.
Previously only available on 2017 Japanese CD edition, bonus singles ‘Inbetween and Overseas’ and ‘Answer’ are available now globally via Process (Bonus Edition).
