East Capri share soaring new single “Not What They Want”

Brisbane alt rock trio East Capri share their empowering new single, Not What They Want, encouraging authenticity and individuality.

Not What They Want mixes emotion with ambience and delivers on soulful melodies, glittering riffs and a powerful soaring arena-rock chorus. The track takes a stand against expectations and judgement, pushing for self acceptance and freedom of choice. The new single explores the idea of breaking away from the pressures we put on ourselves and from those around us to be who we want, love who we want and do what we want in life.

“Originally, we wrote this song and entered it into a worldwide songwriting competition (URM Academy) – which we proudly won!” tells the band. “The concept was inspired by a work friend who was dealing with the judgemental opinions of certain people in his life. He was made to feel shame and regret because he chose his own path. We wanted this song to share that outside pressures don’t matter, your success and journey is your own. We are all running our own race and shouldn’t compare ourselves to anyone else.

The music video, created in collaboration with Andrew Vaughan (Windwaker, Days Like These) sees a juxtaposition of realities, flipping between a grey and lifeless version and its buzzing, bright and exciting counterpart, visualising the theme of the song. Watch here.

East Capri is Eden Cartwright (vocals), Jackson Deasy (guitar) and Jamal Irlam (guitar). The trio meld their heavy roots with alt-pop sensibility, culminating in an impressively unique take on modern metal.

After the warm welcome received from the release of their debut EP ‘Wake n Repeat‘ in 2021, East Capri have made way for a new chapter with intent to broaden the possibilities of their creativity while honouring their foundations. Cartwright explains, “We’re a band that doesn’t want our listeners to get too comfortable with our sound. We love to push the boundaries of the genres we find ourselves writing and incorporating new flavours and sounds into it.”

Since their inception, East Capri have found their footing, mastered their craft and have become a staple in the Brisbane alternative rock scene. The band have shared the stage with fellow Brisbane acts including Stepson, Headwreck, Days Like These, Revoid, Bad Neighbour and more.

Across their releases, East Capri have seen consistent support from triple j, Unearthed and community radio, adds to Spotify and Apple Music editorial playlists, Rage playlisting and featured in an AFL broadcast on Channel 7.

Not What They Want is available and streaming everywhere now.
