Billie Eilish – Melbourne – September 21, 2022

by the partae September 23, 2022
written by the partae

Beautiful words: Darren Chan

American singer/songwriter Billie Eilish returns to Melbourne after more than three years. Her exponential rise in popularity saw her performing the first of 4 nights on the Melbourne leg of her Australian tour.

Diehard fans screamed at deafening levels when Billie appeared amidst a wash of

red lighting opening with “Bury a Friend”.

She screams “Melbourne are you ready?!!” was just reiteration of the 15,000 strong crowd more than willing to partake in the audio visual extravaganza the next two hours would bring.

A minimalist stage set up with a walkway and giant ramp helped create a visual canvas for each song. From the backdrop of flames and red lighting of “Therefore I Am”, the oceanic themed “Ilomilo”, to the environment themed  “All the Good Girls go to Hell”, every song had a visual wow factor.

A moment was taken for musical partner Finneas to join Billie at the front of the stage for the acoustic song “TV”. Billie dons a guitar  and sings “I Love You / Your Power” in her airy vocal style ending with dual harmonic guitar lines with her brother.

The LED backdrop distracts the crowd for a minute before Billie appears floating on an elevated platform at the back of the arena. In a sea of phone torches, she stretches out her hand symbolising her connection with the crowd.

She’s conscious of her rise to fame and takes several moments to acknowledge her appreciation for everyone. She seems to also take on a duty of care for those attending her show – taking a mindfulness moment with some deep breathing.

Billie only takes short moments to bring things down a notch before ramping up again. She had stage presence to captivate the crowd, and they were with her every step of the way.

Jumping around like a metal front person, she concluded the night with the energy expending “Bad Guy”, then serenaded everyone with “Happier Than Ever” as the entire arena rained down in confetti.

It was evident a lot of creative thought and well timed execution had been put into the show. The combination of lighting, staging, LED projected imaging, musical arrangements, and performance delivered a dream-like cinematic experience that fans and even those not attuned to Eilish’s music would never forget.

With an epic line-up of bands and breweries, Beechworth’s High Country Hop will be music to your beers Saturday 2nd April, 2022

by the partae February 22, 2022
written by the partae

Founded by Australian craft beer legends Bridge Road Brewers in 2015, the festival has evolved into a mainstay of the Victorian High Country, brimming with entertainment and the mashing together of like-minded producers, beer-lovers and music fans as they celebrate that most delicious of ingredients: hops.

With Australia’s largest hop farm just 20km up the road from Beechworth, Rostrevor Hop Gardens affords high-country brewers the best of the new season’s hops, and rightly bestows High Country Hop with the crown as Australia’s freshest beer celebration. It’s the perfect opportunity to see and smell the freshest beers, straight from the source, paired with a finely curated musical line-up.

Festival-goers will enjoy matching bands and beers from their hosts Bridge Road Brewers along with special guests Garage Project (NZ) and Mountain Culture (Katoomba). They’ll be joined by regional Victorian brewing royalty; Sailors Grave Brewing, Dollar Bill Brewing and Love Shack Brewing. The High Country will be represented by Bright Brewery, Mitta Mitta Brewing Co, King River Brewing and Billson’s Brewery.

Taste a series of unique ales made using locally-sourced hops, and attend talk and taste events at the Symposium, an opportunity to chat with and learn from brewers, growers and industry types.

Beers not your thing? Discover the best of winemakers and distillers of the region.

Food trucks including Beatbox Kitchen and Taco Truck will sort out hungry festival-goers, where they will be hand-picking a selection of tasty treats for all ages and tastes.

Spring Loaded Festival @ Hastings Foreshore Reserve Saturday February 12, 2022

by the partae February 14, 2022
written by the partae

Photography & Words: Darren Chan

At Hastings Foreshore Reserve, it was a sunny 28 degrees with a nice sea freeze. The perfect weather for the Spring Loaded festival.

Screamfeeder kicked off the festival playing some memorable tunes “Hi Cs” and “Dart”. Local favourite The Fauves brought their melodic alt rock style with songs like “Dogs Are The Best People”.

Custard then took to the stage. That familiar voice of frontman David McCormack (surely it couldn’t the fact he also plays the voice of  “Bandit” in Bluey)  lead the band through their string of 90s hits that were the youth soundtrack of many people there – “Apartment”, “Music Is Crap”, “Girls like That”, “Pack Yr Suitcases” and  “Anatomically Correct”.

Despite a recent personal tragedy, Killing Heidi shifted the festival up another gear as they delivered an energetic and upbeat performance. The crowd sang along all the songs they wanted to hear from tempo shifting “Superman/Supergirl”, “I am”, “Mascara”, and finishing with “Weir” with a “fake” chorus that fooled everyone for a moment.

Punk rock veterans Frenzel Rhomb entertained the crowd with a relaxed demeanour. After the first song, singer Jason Whalley’s belt broke, and the crowd enthusiastically responded by throwing belts on the stage. They effortlessly punched out the classics  “Never Had So Much Fun”, “You’re Not My Friend”, “Russell Crowe’s Band”, and “I’m Shelving Stacks” injecting some dry humour between songs that kept the crowd laughing. Great fun.

Alternative rock icons You Am I didn’t disappoint fans delivering their 1 hour set with swagger and their trademark sound to a huge crowd of fans. How can you not rock out to “Berlin Chair” and “Cathy’s Clown”?

With a few years since their last performance, the crowd gave a huge welcome to headliner Grinspoon as they came onstage. In a theatrical manner, frontman Phil Jamieson wound the crowd into a frenzy with the band opening with “Dead Cat”. The band delivered a powerhouse set with absolute precision, including “Hard Act to Follow” and ”Lost Control”. They finished the set with their most recognised song “Chemical Heart” complete with pyro. The only way to complete an alternative rock festival.
