HER SONGS is a worldwide collective of female songwriters, who after meeting on social media as fans of each other’s work, came together in Los Angeles for seven days in August this year to create one shared, finished product. After teasing tracks from the EP, today the collective are thrilled to share the release in full –Her Songs Los Angeles is out now across all digital streaming services.
In tandem with the release, they have shared the final single and its brilliant accompanying video, which truly captures the essence of the experience and the shared bond between the girls. Listen to the soulful pop anthem ‘Alright‘ and watch the video here.
In the one week in which they were together, the artists; Maddie Jay (Canada), Emily Browning (New Zealand), The Naked Eye (UK/France), Marie Dahlstrøm (Denmark) and Dani Murcia (US/Colombia) wrote, composed, recorded and produced the finished five track EP, which also includes the songs ‘Holding My Own‘, ‘Just A Phase‘ and ‘Goodbye‘. On the experience, they explain:
“Our Los Angeles EP is a collection of songs inspired by our time together in LA. The challenge to write a song a day allowed us to pour every ounce of our focus, energy, and creativity into the project while simultaneously letting go of ego and expectation. Creating a bridge between countries, cultures, and distance was of importance to us, as we explored and pushed our own individual boundaries as artists.”
The concept of Her Songs was born directly from the girls involved as a way to manifest a sense of global support and connection between female/non-binary songwriters, musicians and producers. Combining their individual musical strengths and pulling on their varying backgrounds and knowledge, they plan to continue making music as a strong band of women.
The creative process in LA was at times streamed live (with over 150,000 views in one day) and captured by Malthe Milthers, who documented the week’s activity and has created an accompanying documentary mini-series.

HER SONGS is:
Dani Murcia (Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Production)
Miami-raised, LA-residing Colombian Dani Murcia considers herself a storyteller, and feels a moral responsibility to share her personal stories through honesty and vulnerability in music. She started singing from a young age, but only began writing music when she started high school. When she tragically lost her father to suicide three years ago, she found comfort from sharing her music with others who sought solace in her words having experienced similar heartbreak and loss. Tori Kelly, Matt Corby and Nick Hakim are all influences of hers. Her debut EP ‘In My Mind’ was released one year ago, and is a collaborative effort between herself and six of her closest friends.
Emily Browning (Vocals, Guitar)
Emily Browning is an indie/soul songwriter from Christchurch, New Zealand, who started playing guitar aged 12. Influenced by the rule-breaking melodic direction and beautiful sounds of Emily King, Lianne La Havas and Nai Palm, Emily finds writing music a way of channeling her deepest thoughts, which she’d otherwise be too private to share.
The Naked Eye (Vocals, Guitar)
The Naked Eye is the artist name for French-English singer/songwriter/guitarist Francesca Hole, who is currently based in London. She describes her music as having Jazz-Soul-Ambient undertones, and writes autobiographical songs about life experiences, relationships and hardships. With a wide range of influences spanning Billie Holiday, Julie London, Joni Mitchell, D’Angelo, Radiohead, Hiatus Kaiyote and many more, The Naked Eye finds making music cathartic and empowering, and loves how you can start the day with nothing in a session and end with a song.
Maddie Jay (Bass, Guitar, Production)
Bassist turned songwriting and production enthusiast Maddie Jay made the move from Canada to LA to pursue a professional career in music. She is inspired by young artists doing exciting things, and name checks Kevin Parker of Tame Impala as an idol due to his creative vision and execution.
Marie Dahlstrøm (Vocals, Piano, Percussion, Production)
Danish artist Marie Dahlstrøm realised that she wanted to pursue a career in music when she started university in London, which is where she’s currently based studying a PhD in Music and Neuroscience. Her main motivation is personal experiences and having an outlet to be able to express whatever is on her mind in a safe place. One of her biggest influences is Musiq Soulchild, and another favourite is the jazz singer Lizz Wright. Gospel, Latin and jazz are all genres she spends a lot of time listening to.
