KING STINGRAY ANNOUNCE NATIONAL ALBUM TOUR + DROP NEW SINGLE ‘LUPA’ KING STINGRAY’S DEBUT ALBUM IS OUT NOW!

by the partae

Celebrating the release of their long awaited debut album, King Stingray will rip ’round the country this October, on their largest national tour to date, bringing their good vibes and huge choruses to the masses.

Kicking things off at The Triffid in Brisbane, the band will then make their way south to Sydney’s Manning Bar and Melbourne’s Croxton before rounding things up at The Gov in Adelaide, Fremantle’s Freo.Social, and ending things back in the NT at Darwin Railway Club.

Tickets are on sale Thursday 11 August at 10am AEST, BUT eager fans can get early access to pre-sale tickets from Wednesday August 10 by signing up up here.

The band have also just dropped a video for the album opener, Lupa. Written by lead singer Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu, ‘Lupa’ translates from Yolŋu Matha languages as ‘Poor man, rich life’ and holds a fist in the air for marginalised people around the world.

Yirrŋa, a Gumatj clan songman, says the intention behind the song is “to make people happy and proud”. Lupa is catchy as hell, and somehow immediately relatable, even if it’s sung in a language group spoken by around just 16,000 people in Arnhem Land.

Filmed and directed by long time friend of the band, Sam Brumby, the Lupa video whisks us away to the band’s stunning hometown of Yirrkala to celebrate the lupa way of life – being financially broke but rich in friends, family and culture.

King Stingray’s do-it-yourself ethos and connection to home and family resonates through every song on their debut album, which was finally released on August 5 to critical acclaim.

Surfing an epic wave of live shows through 2022, the band have shared stages with Ball Park Music and Midnight Oil, performed during the AFL’s ‘Dreamtime at The G’ match, delivered a mind-blowing set at Splendour in the Grass, and wowed the nation with their powerful cover of Coldplay classic “Yellow” for triple j’s Like A Version.

With no signs of slowing down, King Sting are ready to electrify venues in all cap cities.

About King Stingray:

King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together. Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember.

Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.

Propelled by the instant success of their first five radio singles, “Hey Wanhaka”, “Get Me Out”, “Milkumana”, “Camp Dog“and “Let’s Go” the band soared to unexpected heights in the lead up to their debut album King Stingray which was released on August 5, 2022.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), the band have taken out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year‘ J Award for 2021, as well as NME Australia’s ‘Best New Act From Australia‘ Award and Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Artist‘ 2022.
