Hachiku aka German-Australian bedroom producer Anika Ostendorf compiles her recent series of ‘isolation covers’ with the release of the 99 Dreams EP, featuring a new cover of The Cranberries classic ‘Dreams’, out now on Milk! Records / Remote Control.
Ostendorf decided to use her recent free time to work on her Ableton skills, “Besides gardening, doing 4 years of tax returns, Skyping friends I didn’t even remember by name and fermenting, I’ve been trying to utilise all this free time to expand my musical production vocabulary and learn how to use production software Ableton – the challenge to myself is to record one cover a week trying to incorporate some sort of production technique I wouldn’t usually try with my own songs.”
The first fruit of this project was an inspired cover of Sia’s ‘Chandelier’ which rode the wave of triple j’s Unearthed’s #Covered19 hashtag. It was followed by a version of Nena’s 80’s hit ’99 Luftballons’ sung in Ostendorf’s native tongue of German and premiered on 3RRR’s Local and/or General.
The final cover of the project, a faithful rendition of The Cranberries’ ‘Dreams’ has been a long-time favourite in Hachiku’s live set – most recently seeing audiences sing-a-long on her US tour in January and February supporting Courtney Barnett.
