DR. MARTENS X MADEME

by the partae May 20, 2024
written by the partae
  1. MARTENS & MADEME ANNOUNCE THEIR FIRST COLLABORATION WITH STEELY DETERMINATION AND AN OPEN-HEARTED SHOE.

The collection features a chunky 1461 Quad shoe in black or silver with a steel toe exposed through a heart-shaped cut-out.

Unapologetic, fearless, authentic. There’s an undeniable crossover in spirit between Dr. Martens and MadeMe. The femme-forward, straight-talking “it girl” type who serves as a muse for founder Erin Magee is frequently spotted in a pair of Doc’s boots, with an undefinable attitude that makes her at home in the world of both brands. This mood is personified in MadeMe and Dr. Martens’ first collaboration, featuring London- based singer-songwriter Lola Young, whose raw charm and punchy, versatile voice embody the take-it-or- leave-it mindset of the quintessential MadeMe girl.

The two-piece collection features a chunky 1461 3-eye shoe built on our formidable Quad sole, marked with our distinctive grooving pattern and signature yellow welt stitching. It’s available in black Vintage Smooth leather paired with black laces or silver Alumix with contrasting purple laces. Both colours are fitted with a steel toe cap with an eye-catching heart-shaped cut-out — for an industrial edge with a softer twist. Dual branding stamps its mark on the heel and insock.

“I’ve always wanted to work on a steel toe DM’s shoe. The heart cut-out leather exposing the steel toe is as tough and utilitarian as it is soft. It’s a beautiful contradiction, just like the MadeMe girl.” — Erin Magee, MadeMe Founder

Since launching the women’s streetwear label MadeMe in 2007, Magee has transformed it into a ubiquitous New York brand and an inclusive community that occupies a still-revolutionary space in the male-dominated streetwear industry. Magee’s “for girls, by girls” ethos continues to champion women against the backdrop of a scene where they are historically underrepresented. Dr. Martens, whose boots and shoes have been at the feet of a long line of riot grrrl disruption, makes a natural partner for MadeMe as it continues its tradition of rebellion.

“I’ve known Erin for a long time, so it was great to finally bring this collaboration to life. In a lot of ways our collaboration was inevitable. MadeMe occupies that same rebellious space in women’s fashion that DM’s boots always have. It was great to put a spin on that heritage for a new generation.” — Darren Mckoy, Dr. Martens Global Creative Director

Dr. Martens x MadeMe is available from Friday 24th May at drmartens.com.au

ABOUT DR. MARTENS

The first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on the 1st April 1960. With its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole and heel-loop, it was a boot for workers, initially worn by postmen and policemen; comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time. Throughout Dr. Martens history, the brand has been adopted and subverted by diverse individuals, musicians, youth cultures and tribes. These are the people who stand out from the crowd and their journey of self-expression has always been accompanied by a pair of DM’s boots or shoes.

The simple silhouette allows people to customise each pair; whilst on a utilitarian level their famous durability and comfort make them ideal footwear for the world of gigs and street fashion. On an emotional level, they are a flag of attitude and empowerment.

The Northamptonshire factory where it all began still exists to this day, in the village of Wollaston. A specific range of ‘Made In England’ products are manufactured here by a small, close-knit team of people schooled in traditional shoe-making and a process that hasn’t changed since our first pair six decades ago.

ABOUT MADEME

MadeMe is a peerless “by girls, for girls” brand originating in New York City in 2007. Since its inception, the label has evolved to represent the dynamic perspectives of today’s downtown youth. In the early 90s, a powerful female-first ethos shaped music, clothing and culture. MadeMe embodies this energy for a new generation. With each collection the brand celebrates countercultural style tribes and the pioneering women who led them. Whether taking cues from riot grrls or ravers, MadeMe communicates through ideas and interests.

It is an ecosystem of kindred individuals who are at their core – themselves. This display of selfhood can be read as defiance or transgression against a minefield of relevance and moodboards. The MadeMe girl is radical because she rebels against the concept of who society says she should be, she does what she wants and is able to trust her own intuition. That feeling is always captured and embodied by both the girls and the clothes they wear.

FODI: FESTIVAL OF DANGEROUS IDEAS

by the partae May 20, 2024
written by the partae

Festival of Dangerous Ideas (FODI) has today unveiled its 2024 theme, Sanctuary, with a program for curious minds on 24-25 August. The home-grown, globally renowned festival returns to Sydney for the first time since 2022, with its twelfth edition set to delight and disrupt Australian audiences across one weekend.

Australia’s original disruptive festival, known for being at the zeitgeist of ideas, FODI will bring thought-leaders and artists from across the globe to Carriageworks’ art precinct. Its line-up, set to be announced in June, will fuel critical thinking, challenge preconception, provide information and spark conversations.

Offering a haven for exploration and a harbour for the curious, FODI 2024’s Sanctuary invites audiences to engage with the ideas behind the headlines of the 24-hour news cycle. It provides a space to spend time with international experts and agenda-setting changemakers, to better understand what is driving change in the world and society for better or worse.

Danielle Harvey, Festival Director, FODI, said:

“FODI is about bringing great talent and great audiences together, creating a place for everyone to meet and exchange ideas – be that on our stages, in our greenrooms, at our functions or in the foyers. Our digital extension of the live event reaches out globally, sharing and provoking conversations around the dinner table and in the media.”

“We know that it’s wild out there. It’s a litany of entrenched ideas, 24-hour news cycles, shallow information and self-censorship. We desperately need a space where we can engage with challenging ideas in good faith. And that’s what FODI is all about this year. It’s an opportunity to hear powerful and provocative speakers from around the world talk on important and rousing topics. And also a space, a sanctuary, where audiences can engage with these ideas in a way that we, unfortunately, can’t in the wild. In our Sanctuary you are safe from hype and safe to listen and to ask questions.”

FODI is an ideas festival for our times: inviting guests to indulge their curiosity, focus their attention and engage with the uncomfortable. The festival has featured over 630 of the most fascinating, fearless speakers and artists the world has to offer. Past speakers include Stephen Fry, Lionel Shriver, Christopher Hitchens, Alicia Garza, Salman Rushdie, Pussy Riot, Marcia Langton, Julian Assange and Germaine Greer.

The Festival is presented by The Ethics Centre, a not for profit that encourages people to examine all aspects of life, and is supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS

written by the partae

LEAPS AND BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL IS REIGNITING YARRA’S LOCAL LIVE MUSIC SCENE ONCE AGAIN THIS WINTER!

.

LEAPS AND BOUNDS
RETURNS 25 – 28 JULY

Yarra City Council’s annual winter music festival, Leaps and Bounds, returns with a focus on uplifting and amplifying Yarra’s diverse live music scene. Including the reopening of a historical venue that has been dormant for decades, this year’s festival strives to highlight the diversity of bands, performers and song writers that attracts an equally diverse audience of music lovers across all ages.

“Much loved for over a decade, Leaps and Bounds is a favourite in the Yarra calendar” Mayor Edward Crossland said.

“We’re so proud to continue hosting this spectacular festival and supporting local musicians, venues and workers, particularly in light of recent challenges that the industry is facing relating to rising rents, cost of living pressures and increasing public liability insurance.”

A celebration of local music, the diverse line-up of live shows will hit venues across Fitzroy, Fitzroy North, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond from Thursday 25 July to Sunday 28 July.

Spanning four days and nights, the festival boasts a succession of parties and performances for all age groups and every budget, including plenty of free and family-friendly gigs on the program.

This year’s program provides a platform for venues to program a diverse lineup from LGBTIQA+ and First Nations musicians and to build audiences across generations.

Highlights include:

  • Tribute shows to Mazzy Star at Lulie Tavern, Gillian Welch at The Gem and John Prine at Catfish Bar.
  • Amos Roach Unplugged featuring the award-winning musician, dancer and director, for an intimate performance at the Railway Hotel Fitzroy.  An unmissable opportunity to also see the newly refurbished bandroom, which hosted dances for returned soldiers in the 50s through to local rock acts like Weddings Parties Anything in the early 2000s, but has sat dormant for decades, until now!
  • Other First Nations shows include Tjum Tjumba Fundraiser at Glamorama and Kiwat Kennell at Bodriggy Brewing Co.
  • Berada by Nighthawks x Rama Parwata promises to deliver an unforgettable experience as a showcase of Southeast Asian artists that merges cultural influences, experimental sounds and dynamic performances including Hantu, the solo project of multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist Isobel D’Cruz which draws on her Western and Indian classical training and Malaysian background,
  • Shows for young families and teenagers including: Baby, you’re a star at Lulie Tavern: a gig for parents, pals and kids in conjunction with Yarra Youth DJ Skills plus Horsepower Two Year Anniversary Show (All Ages) at The Tote featuring Horsepower and a host of acts from Melbourne and Sydney with J.O.Y (SYD), Bozo (SYD), Mindrace and Tarnished.
  • PBS Presents ‘Swinging City’ Live from The Corner Hotel: To celebrate and launch Leaps and Bounds 2024, PBS will continue their tradition of a live broadcast from one of Yarra’s finest establishments the Corner Hotel, presenting not one, but two PBS radio shows live-to-air from the rooftop bar and courtyard. Join hosts Crispi Winsor and Myles O’Neil-Shaw for 4 hours of live music, special guests and rare records as Radio City and Swinging Doors combine for this special broadcast.
Successful events from last year will also return for another exciting instalment in 2024:
  • GRRLS to the Front at Bad Decisions Bar – a hip hop show spotlighting female identifying, non-binary, and LGBTIQA+ rap and hip-hop artists, and their passionate fan bases.
  • FLIGHT! – a showcase featuring the new generation of Naarm’s best artists, featuring 9 acts from culturally diverse backgrounds. Presented by The Boite & The Evelyn Hotel.
  • Leaps and Bounds Record Fair at Collingwood Town Hall.

As part of the festival, Council is also proud to announce a partnership with Live Music Locator (LML), a pilot project to promote all the live music taking place in the municipality from July onwards, including Leaps and Bounds Festival. Live Music Locator is a new website making it possible to discover every gig playing at every venue across every genre at any one time.

This information will always be verified and free, importantly supporting musicians, our small to medium live music venues and you, the punters. Head to www.lml.live to Find Your Music.

Leaps and Bounds Music Festival is proudly presented by Yarra City Council, with presenting partner PBS FM.

Le Youth has just announced his highly anticipated return to Australia for his first headline tour in close to a decade. Presented by Untitled Group, the exclusive two show tour will  take place in Eora/Sydney & Naarm/Melbourne across the 13th & 14th of September.

The LA based DJ & producer’s resurgence in Australia follows his successful East Coast tour last year with Lane 8’s ‘This Never Happened’ gathering which took place alongside Sultan + Shepard & PARIS. This tour was widely recognised for its unique photo & phone free environments.

Proving he is undoubtedly one of the most prominent profiles in melodic/progressive house, the impressive artist has sold out North American tours including major headline shows at La Fonda in LA & Brooklyn & Steel in NYC. His festival appearances at marquee events like EDC, CRSSD, Electric Forest, and Hangout have further cemented his reputation as a must-see artist. Alongside his numerous live performance accolades the DJ & producer has collaborated with fellow major players in the melodic house scene such as Sultan + Shepperd, Jerro, Ocula & many more.

Known for breaking barriers between performer & audiences, Le Youth states “it’s not about me, it’s about us.”

Dubbed ‘the peoples DJ’ by his loyal fanbase, Le Youth’s first album ‘Reminders’, released in 2022, amassed over 22.1 million streams since its debut. Following the success of ‘Reminders’ Le Youth followed up with his album ‘About Us’ in 2023, which recently saw the release of its deluxe version earlier this year.

The tour kicks off in Eora/Sydney on Friday, September 13, at the iconic Oxford Art Factory, a venue renowned for showcasing a vast array of talent including the likes of Khruangbin & Billie Eilish. The second & final stop will be in Naarm/Melbourne at Max Watts on Saturday September 14, the intimate venue sets the perfect scene for Le Youth’s barrier breaking ethos.

Prepare to be connected to this artist on a whole new level with these two headline shows set to live up to every standard ever set.

Spiderbait Australian Black Betty Tour for August – October

Spiderbait Australian Black Betty Tour for August – October

by the partae May 15, 2024
written by the partae

Limited edition Tonight Alright vinyl released July 26

Frontier Touring are delighted to announce iconic Aussie rockers Spiderbait will hit the road this August, September and October for an extensive run of shows to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their seminal 2004 album, Tonight Alright and standout track, ‘Black Betty’.

Taking in ten dates across the country, the Black Betty 20th Anniversary Tour kicks off at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on Tuesday 13 August, heading through all Australian Capital Cities plus stops in Newcastle, Wollongong and the Gold Coast this August, September and October.

Frontier members can access presale tickets from 10am (local time) on Monday 20 May, before tickets go on sale at 10am (local time) on Wednesday 22 May.

For tickets and further information, head to frontiertouring.com/spiderbait.

“I can’t believe it’s 20 years since we released Black Betty and it went to number 1”, said Kram. “Since then, the song has become a bit legendary for us and has racked up over a hundred million streams on Spotify and 75 million views on YouTube which is nuts. The whole ride has been so awesome and was so unexpected.

“So to mark this mad anniversary of our biggest hit we are announcing a very special tour to celebrate Black Betty and its 20th anniversary. We’re super pumped and can’t wait to see y’all out there. Come celebrate Black Betty with us!”.

“Nothing beats seeing live music, I’m really excited to bring everyone along with us and leave them with a big smile. Feels like we’re throwing a party in the machinery shed on the farm like the old days”, added Janet.

“I loved touring this album 20 years ago, we went back to a raw guitar, bass and drums. That approach comes naturally to us”, said Whitt.

Recorded in California, Tonight Alright (2004) leant into the hard rock sound of the early-2000’s. The album debuted at No.14 on the ARIA Album Chart that year and featured the band’s most popular song to date, ‘Black Betty’. Defying age and genre, ‘Black Betty’ arrived fifteen years into Spiderbait’s storied career. The song continued to climb the charts after release, reaching the top of the ARIA Singles Chart two months after its debut and hitting the US Top 40 Rock Chart.

To celebrate Tonight Alright, Spiderbait will issue the album on vinyl for the first time. The 20th Anniversary edition – released on 26 July– arrives on limited edition red vinyl, with alternative artwork, imagery and an alternate version of the single, ‘Tonite’. Preorder the vinyl HERE.

Renowned for their dynamic on-stage energy, Spiderbait are without doubt one of the country’s most beloved live acts. Most recently touring Australia in 2022, the trio shows no sign of slowing down, their intensity and camaraderie endearing them to fans right across the globe.

“A celebration of friendship and great song-writing” – Beat

“Spiderbait made a mighty lush sound… They played with an energising, steamrolling pace that never let up” – MusicFeeds

“… a roaring set, high energy, pub/alt-rock, shouting and groovy, Kram, Janet English and Whitt clearly loving every moment” – The Music

The story of Spiderbait is an unlikely but heart-warming one – three friends from a small Australian country town taking on the music scene, and emerging triumphantly thirty years later, friendship intact, and now one of the biggest and best rock bands on the national landscape.

The trio’s popularity spans three decades and shows no signs of abating. They’ve released seven acclaimed albums, all of which have racked up Gold, Platinum or Double Platinum status, and have combined Australian sales of over a million units. Spiderbait have also chalked up almost every Australian accolade possible, taking home multiple ARIA Awards, topping charts and becoming the first Australian band to take the crown in triple j’s prestigious Hottest 100 of 1996 with ‘Buy Me A Pony’.

Australian rock ‘n roll royalty, and with a catalogue of music that’s distinctive and uncompromising, Spiderbait’s anticipated Black Betty 20th Anniversary Tour will see the band playing their greatest hits and celebrating their greatest hit of all. Don’t miss their epic tour this August, September and October!

Artists: Jasmine Thompson, Felix Jaehn
Title: Without You
Label: Crash Your Sound

Download / Stream

German DJ and producer Felix Jaehn is back with his new track “Without You” in collaboration with singer-songwriter Jasmine Thompson, a breezy pop-dance track that’s also very special to both artists. Opening with a wistful guitar solo, Felix interweaves organic, lilting melodies with a subtle but upbeat four-on-the-floor bassline. Meanwhile, Jasmine‘s emotive, breathy vocals steal the show as she expresses the track’s heartfelt lyrics through a simply gorgeous performance. The two previously collaborated on 2015’s hit “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better),” which went 3 x Gold, 33 x Platinum, and 1 x Diamond on the European charts. But “Without You” is so much more than a simple reunion from these two talented artists: it’s a track to memorialize the growth they have both experienced in the last 9 years, all the while remaining cherished friends and supporters of each other on a career and personal level. “Without You” is the manifestation of years of intention to collaborate again, and it came to fruition in a matter of weeks once Felix sent Jasmine the idea for the track. Felix and Jasmine‘s bond is so evident throughout the production that is bound to bring out the feels! Read on for quotes about this personal new track below:

“It feels like reunions are rare in the music industry, and that’s why I was so happy to get the opportunity to work with Felix again. Being in the studio together brought back all those good vibes from the ‘Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)’ days. His creativity and energy are super inspiring. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it and feel those summer vibes. It’s been a dream to work with an old friend again.” – Jasmine Thompson

“Reuniting with Jasmine Thompson for ‘Without You‘ has been an incredible journey back to the vibes of 2015. It’s been almost ten years since ‘Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better),’ and it feels like we picked up right where we left off. This song is our way of capturing that melodic, chill essence of summer and sunsets, perfect for an open-air vibe. I couldn’t have done this without Jasmine – her talent and spirit are essential to bringing this track to life. ‘Without You‘ is a celebration of our musical chemistry and a special gift for our fans. I hope it becomes a soundtrack to many unforgettable summer moments.” – Felix Jaehn

Jasmine Thompson

Jasmine signed to Atlantic Records in New York at the age of just 13. Now 23, the London-based singer-songwriter has developed from YouTube child star to an accomplished artist and performer. Jasmine‘s early releases “Wonderland” and “Colour” EPs showcase the depth of her talent with lyrics that tackle heartfelt emotions and melodies that invoke them. Since her debut, Thompson has earned more than 3B global streams and almost 3M monthly Spotify listeners worldwide. Her blockbuster YouTube channel has also grown, accruing over 680M YouTube views and more than 3,6M subscribers thus far. Along with her acclaimed solo work, Thompson has made chart-topping appearances on a pair of global blockbuster hit singles. Her collaboration with German DJ/producer Robin Schulz on “Sun Goes Down (Feat. Jasmine Thompson)” earned 1B worldwide streams along with a slew of international gold and platinum certifications and Top 5 and Top 10 chart runs in Europe, Australia, and South America. German DJ Felix Jaehn‘s billion-streaming “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)” remix was an even greater smash, ascending to the top 10 on the iTunes Store‘s “Top Dance Songs” chart while earning gold and platinum certifications in a range of countries. 2020 saw Thompson teaming with GRAMMY®️ award-winning artist/DJ/producer Zedd for the hit single – “Funny,” boasting over 230M global streams to date. 2024 promises to be a big year for Jasmine as she prepares a string of new releases and live performances.

Felix Jaehn

For years, Felix Jaehn has been one of the globally most successful and sought-after DJs and producers. Precociously inclined from a very young age, he has been involved in the realm of music for quite some time. Having won the prestigious Bambi Award for his international success and being voted Best Dance Act at the German 1Live Radio Awards for 4 times in a row, he became the youngest artist in history to receive 2 Diamond Award certifications. Jaehn‘s remix of OMI‘s “Cheerleader” achieved the #1 charting position in 55 countries, including 6 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and his follow-up single, “Ain’t Nobody (Loves Me Better)” hit #1 in 36 countries. In addition to that, Felix Jaehn‘s records have racked up over 10 billion streams worldwide. Since then, he has continuously delivered a stream of infectious and high-quality productions that dominate playlists and dancefloors worldwide. From dance-pop and tech house to happy rave and trance, his electrifying stage presence has seen him take over the decks at some of the world’s most elusive stages, including Tomorrowland, Parookaville, Ultra Music Festival, and many more. But what sets Felix Jaehn apart, in particular, is his ability to create music that is not only catchy and danceable but also emotionally moving. Having collected multiple diamond, platinum and gold awards all over the globe, Felix Jaehn is on his unbreakable path to success in 2024.

“Lovers’ Gothic,” the latest masterpiece Maïa Davies

by the partae May 12, 2024
written by the partae

Crafted as a chronological storyboard of emotional upheaval, this new album encapsulates Davies’ journey through the stages of relationship grief. But don’t expect a mere lamentation; “Lovers’ Gothic” skillfully blends elements of pop and classical music, infusing poignant melodies and velvety vocals to soothe the soul. Recorded in top-tier studios across the country, Maïa enlisted a stellar lineup of collaborators, including Marcus Paquin (Begonia), Erin Costelo (Kaïa Kater), David Mohacsi (Rêve, Mother Mother), and more, to co-produce this raw and evocative collection.

Maïa Davies is not just an artist; she’s a force in the music industry. A bilingual, Juno and ECMA nominated producer, songwriter, and recording artist, Davies boasts an impressive resume. As a founding member of Warner Music Canada group Ladies of the Canyon, she’s delivered a dozen top-ten Canadian commercial radio hits and earned accolades like the SOCAN #1 songwriter award and ECMA nominations. Davies is also a dedicated advocate for women in music, actively involved in initiatives like the National Arts Centre’s Global Network of Female-Identifying Music Producers. With over a decade of experience in artist development, she’s mentored both major label and independent artists.

Beyond her solo endeavors, Davies is one half of Montreal indie band Darkometro and has lent her talents to numerous Canadian recordings, collaborating with artists like The Dears, Serena Ryder, and Kevin Hearn. Based in Montreal, Davies’ influence extends far beyond Canada, with work taking her to cities across North America and Europe. Whether she’s working with renowned artists or nurturing emerging talent, Maïa Davies continues to shape the landscape of alternative pop, rock, and folk music.

Interview with Monique Angele on the Inspiration Behind 'Dreaming'
Music InterviewsMusic News

Interview with Monique Angele on the Inspiration Behind ‘Dreaming’

by the partae May 12, 2024
written by the partae
Can you tell us more about the inspiration behind your upcoming single, “Dreaming”?
The inspiration behind my new single comes from daydreaming. The song is about going into a dreamlike blissful state of mind where there are no stresses at all. In the real world where you are trying to find yourself and know what to do it can be overwhelming. It’s about following your dreams and heart and being where you want to be to make you happy.

What prompted you to explore the theme of daydreaming and introspective reflection in this song?
I decided to write about the theme of daydreaming and introspective reflection because I often do this myself. I try my best to be the best I can be and be happy but it’s not always easy. I struggle with depression and anxiety and I have to work on myself to feel better every day. This song is a reminder to be kind to yourself and let your dreamlike happy state of mind take over sometimes. Let your imagination run wild. It’s ok to be a free spirit and to just let go.

Your music is often described as transcending conventional genre boundaries. How would you personally define the genre of “Dreaming,” and how does it fit into your broader musical landscape?
I would define my genre of “Dreaming” as operatic piano pop, however it’s nice to hear what people think my music sounds like. I don’t think I really fit in a particular genre. To be honest I’ve had people tell me they can’t define what my genre is and I’m completely content with that. I’m just creating music organically and seeing what comes out.

The opening of “Dreaming” features soft piano keys, setting a serene atmosphere. How did you envision this introduction, and what role does the piano play in conveying the song’s message?
The piano intro is like the awakening going into the daydreaming state of mind. The piano is like the rhythmic heartbeat of the song. I honestly don’t really think too much when I write the piano part of a song. I just play the piano how I’m feeling at the moment and then something comes of it.

As the song progresses, it transitions into a full-band arrangement with various instrumental layers. How did you approach the arrangement process to ensure that each element complements the others while still allowing your voice to shine?
I really like building a song to a climax. I do like to add layers everywhere but I also like to still keep the vocals and piano as the main focus of the song. I always love adding and singing harmonies to the melody. My amazing producer Sean O’Sullivan from Highway 9 Productions was great in collaborating ideas on how to build the song and make everything sound balanced.

Collaboration plays a significant role in the production of “Dreaming.” Could you share your experience working with Sean Peter O’Sullivan and Joseph Carra on this project? How did their contributions enhance the final product?
I loved working with Sean O’Sullivan and Joseph Carra. They really know how to make my music come to life and know exactly how I want my music to sound.

Your music is known for its emotive delivery and captivating storytelling. How do you balance vulnerability and strength in your performance, particularly in a song like “Dreaming”?
I try to be true to myself and genuine whenever I write, record & perform my music. It always comes from the heart and soul. I think creating anything is very vulnerable as you are showing your true self to the world. It takes courage and strength to create something and make it public. You are putting yourself out there for the whole world to hear your music and see it in performance or video. I think the only way I am balancing vulnerability and strength in my music is just being very true to myself, that is when the magic happens.

Can you take us through your creative process when writing the lyrics for “Dreaming”?
The lyrics came to me from what I was feeling at the time. I usually write songs when I’m feeling some kind of emotion or need to release my feelings somehow. So I started to write about falling into a blissful state of mind when you feel overwhelmed. Whatever your blissful state of mind is, just go there and forget about your worries. To be carefree and to dream is a beautiful thing sometimes.

Did the words flow naturally, or did you encounter any challenges along the way?
The words flowed pretty easily for this song. It didn’t really take a long time to write the lyrics as I write my feelings based on the state of mind I’m in. I was thinking to myself why do I like to dream and where does it take me and how does it make me feel? It’s almost like journaling my thoughts on paper but in poetry. This was a fun song to write!

Your influences include musicians like Kate Bush, Tori Amos, and Queen. How do these artists inspire your own musical style and approach to songwriting?
These artists are very unique in their songwriting and live performances. I really feel that they are really true to themselves in how they want to express themselves through art. I’m also drawn to classically influenced music and these artists have classical elements in their songs.

From your childhood in Ottawa to your travels in Australia and beyond, how has your journey influenced your artistic perspective and the themes you explore in your music?

I have learned various styles of music for piano & voice and that has definitely influenced my music. Having a background in various solo piano and voice repertoire, opera, musical theatre, and dance has shaped how I write, record and perform my music. Gaining new experiences while traveling and living in different places has also influenced my music quite a bit. New experiences lead to new creations. I am constantly learning and growing which helps me create new music.

“Dreaming” aims to transport listeners to a world of imagination and introspection. What do you hope listeners will take away from the song, particularly in terms of finding solace amidst life’s challenges?
I hope this song brings some peace, joy & comfort to the listeners. I hope this song makes people feel something. I hope that this song brings out their inner free spirit and people can let go of their stresses and worries.

Beyond the release of “Dreaming,” what can fans expect from you in the coming months?
I’ll be performing various live shows, writing and planning to record & release new music soon. Stay tuned to my upcoming projects and performances from my website www.moniqueangele.com

Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?
Yes, I’ll be recording & releasing new music soon!

Finally, if you could sum up the essence of “Dreaming” in a few words, what would they be, and why?

Close your eyes, breathe and be in your paradise.

AKA LUI – MID DRIFT

One of Australia’s most loved singer-songwriters Dan Sultan’s trophy shelf holds an incredible 7 ARIA Awards, alongside NIMA Awards, Top 5 ARIA-charting albums, and an ARIA-certified gold record. With countless sold-out headline shows in his wake, he’s also toured with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Midnight Oil and Vance Joy, and played Australia’s biggest festivals including Splendour in the Grass, Blues Festival and Falls to name a few. He’ll add Festival of the Stone to that list on 1 June!

It’s almost impossible not to recognise a Beddy Rays track, a carefully curated recipe involving all the right ingredients: heartfelt lyrics, huge hooks, mosh-worthy riffs and a lingering sense of comradery and good vibes that underpins everything they create. It’s seen them land plays on triple j’s Hottest 100 and Hottest 100 Like a Versions of all time, an ARIA nomination for ‘Breakthrough Artist’ and spots on festivals around the country. With a knack for knowing how to have a bloody good time, everyone wants to be friends with Beddy Rays.

Ultimate purveyors “pub-pop” goodness, The Beefs founded their musical haven in 2018 when frontman Sammy Smith decided to round up some talented mates and cook up a musical feast for the ages. In the kitchen of their tunes, you’ll find a dash of infectious pop melodies and a sprinkle of rock ‘n’ roll charm. Marinated together with catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, and voilà – you’ve got the signature sound of The Beefs. It’s the kind of music that’ll make you want to hoist a pint in one hand and dance with a mate in the other.

Hailing from Perth, Verge Collection balance classic pop sensibilities with working class poetry to channel the collective conscious of suburban Australian millennials. Songwriter and front-man Ben Arnold’s songs have the ability to hoist you high to the point of chills and a stupid grin, before making you plummet just as quickly into an existential nosedive.

AKA Lui seamlessly fuses disco and psychedelia to create a sound that is uniquely his own. His debut single catapulted him into the spotlight, earning critical acclaim and over 2 million streams on Spotify alone. Recent tracks like “Kick It“, “Lighthouse“, and “Fool” have continued to captivate audiences both in Australia and abroad and with the upcoming release of his debut EP Sapphire Blue on June 21st, AKA Lui is set to confirm his status as a rising star in Australian music.

Bursting with sun-soaked melodies and an electric live set it’s no surprise that Brisbane (Meanjin) indie-pop 5-piece Mid Drift have quickly become a crowd favourite in their hometown and are gaining a loyal fan base interstate. Get a sneak preview of their debut EP Lemon, Lime and Tanlines when they open the stage at Festival of the Stone.

With meticulous care, we’ve created this limited-edition winter brew using the best ingredients we could find, including select Australian malts. Stone beer boasts aromatic notes of brewed coffee, rich dark chocolate, and hints of subtly smoked barley.

Festival of the Stone 2024 will raise money for Byron Shire homeless hub, Fletcher Street Cottage. Byron Shire’s homelessness rate is currently the highest in NSW and Fletcher Street Cottage provides support, information, referral and advocacy to people at risk of homelessness and those already sleeping rough.

“We believe it’s a really important time to support Australian music, events and our community. With Splendour and other festivals having a year off, we’re injecting a little more love into the music side of things this year. Live music in Australia ain’t going anywhere. And with Byron having one of the highest homeless populations in the nation, now is as important as ever to support those sleeping rough. We’re happy to support Fletcher St Cottage’s incredible work in this area for the 10th year in a row.” – James Aris, Stone & Wood Marketing Manager.

Keli Holiday (Adam Hyde from Peking Duk) EP JESTERMAN

Keli Holiday (Adam Hyde from Peking Duk) EP JESTERMAN

by the partae May 9, 2024
written by the partae

“‘horsepower’ is like a rollercoaster ride for your ears that makes you pay attention,” – Music Feeds

“Sunny and sonically on point” – Beat Mag

“Leave space in your cooler for Keli Holiday…
jam-packed with all the good vibes we are craving in the world right now
” – Euphoria

“Keli Holiday is making the emotional 80’s fever dream we’ve been waiting for”
– Happy Mag

Keli Holiday’s raw, energetic and unapologetic EP JESTERMAN is out 24 May. JESTERMAN is the beginning of a new chapter, abundant with authenticity and raw ideas which whittle down the madness into a breathtaking statue of Keli Holiday.

Keli Holiday is the lovechild from the mind of Adam Hyde, one half of 10x platinum selling, multi-ARIA award winning electro-duo Peking Duk, formed living off of nothing but New Order records, beer, and sleepless nights in New York City. For his latest venture, he has enlisted some star studded collaborators in the form of Twin Shadow (Alt J, HAIM, Lady Gaga, Flume, Billy Idol, The Drums) who co-produced the record, with singles brought into being with Kirin J Callinan, blackpaw, and Dante Knows.

A dominatrix of the dance-floor, JESTERMAN highlights Holiday’s versatility and diverse sonic inspiration reminiscent of 90s britpop, new-age disco and an echoing of alternative rock. lowdown bottles the turbulent essence of a relationship that is both poisonous and irresistible: Think it’s time to go now / Baby so slow down / but I guess I’m going back / fuck, I love it.

“Lowdown talks about the push and pull of a toxic relationship that unfortunately a lot of us know all too well. You know it’s bad but you can’t stop. You’re just as bad as one another and love it,” said Holiday.

Holiday continued, “This song was born in the beachwood canyon bungalow with Twin Shadow and Blackpaw. We started with the bass and I riffed some spoken word. We then thought it would be a fun time trying to juxtapose the minor sections with a bright chorus that feels like sunshine through the palm trees on a pill of ecstasy. It feels like two songs in a way and I love that.”

Singles ‘horsepower’ and ‘disco’ have seen editorial support from Tone Deaf, Pleaser Magazine, MILKY, Music Feeds, GRRRL Music and Pilerats. Radio support came from BBC 6 Music who premiered ‘disco‘, as well as airplay from triple j, Apple Music’s Travis Mills, NOVA, SYN FM‘s The Hoist, and RRR among others. Placed on Spotify‘s Local Noise, Alt Here, Fresh Finds AU/NZ, Indie Arrivals, and Apple Music’s New In Indie and Today’s Indie Rock.

Holiday’s 2022 debut album KELI received over 2 million streams. Received editorial support from NME, MILKY, Tone Deaf, Pilerats, Happy Mag, Life Without Andy, theMusic. Received the #1 song on triple j and further radio support from KCRW, and Sirius XMU Discovery. Continued support across Spotify Editorials including New Music Friday (UK, AUNZ, India), Front Left, The Local List, and Indie Arrivals.

Holiday was the first artist on HIIT Networks ‘Australian Made’ segment with Abbie Chatfield, played Falls Festival 22’/23′, was featured on the cover of Euphoria Magazine, and sold out his debut Sydney and Melbourne shows at The Lansdowne and Yah Yah’s. Catch Keli Holiday as the opener for DZ Deathrays Sydney leg of their Black Rat 10 Year Anniversary Tour.

‘JESTERMAN’ is OUT 24 MAY.

Gloam Release Dreamy New Single "Hinder''

Gloam Release Dreamy New Single “Hinder”

by the partae May 9, 2024
written by the partae

Perth/Boorloo post-shoegaze outfit Gloam take an introspective look at growth, progress and navigating change with shimmering new single Hinder.

Delving into the intricate dynamics of clinging onto discomfort out of fear, Hinder reflects a struggle with self assurance that ultimately, and aptly, hinders the ability to voice ones truth openly and move towards personal growth and empowerment.

“That fear may manifest in various forms,” tells the band. “Maybe it’s a reluctance to confront situations, an aversion to change, or perhaps another internal qualm. In essence, Hinder encapsulates the daunting conflict of resigning oneself to a subpar reality rather than mustering the courage to enact change or improvement. It’s an abstract that addresses the interplay between comfort and progress, relating to internal conflicts stunting the actualisation of self-fulfillment.”

Mixed and mastered by long time collaborator Cameron Murphy at Opaque Studios, the single debuted on triple j Unearthed TOPS on Wednesday evening, showcasing the band’s unique blend of ethereal soundscapes and relatable lyrical theming.

Forming in early 2022, Gloam are a four-piece that have already carved a name for themselves in their corner of the world. Rowan Hardy takes on vocal duties and guitar while Oli Booth joins as lead guitarist, George Blacklock on drums and Oakie Diggins on bass. Drawing inspiration from iconic shoegaze acts to the likes of Deftones, Diiv, Deafheaven, Nothing, Slowdive, and Whirr, Gloam take listeners on an immersive, genre-defying journey. Their swirling shoegaze style has proven to appeal to a diverse range of fans, resonating with followers of alternative, indie, hardcore, and metal music.

The quartet’s debut single Merchant released in July of 2022 and saw quick success with an add to Spotify editorial playlist Adrenalin, tens of thousands of digital streams and counting. The single was pulled from their warmly received self-titled EP released later that year, offering a tantalising introduction to the foundations of Gloam’s dreamy creativity.

Despite their brief tenure on the live circuit, Gloam has already made a significant impact, sharing the stage with international acts Deafheaven (USA), Movements (USA), Boston Manor (UK), Touché Amoré (USA) and Hubris (CH) as well as a collection of Perth alternative favourites including Daybreak, Idle Eyes, No Brainer, Pinwheel, Shangrila and Vacant Home.

Hinder breaks Gloam’s silence and releases with the promise of more to follow. Hinder is available and streaming everywhere now.
