SASAMI releases video for ‘Not The Time’

Los Angeles-based artist SASAMI has released a video for ‘Not The Time’.
Gorilla vs Bear premiered the video overnight, calling it a “vibrant and charming video for her sweetly buzzing new single”. Co-directed by Kate Hollowell and Sasami Ashworth, the video features the LA Municipal Dance Squad and The Linda Lindas as SASAMI’s backing band.

Last month, The FADER called ‘Not The Time’ a “fully-formed, heart-striking gem”, hailing SASAMI as “rock’s next big thing”.

‘Not The Time’ and SASAMI’s previous single ‘Callous’, which Pitchfork named Best New Track earlier this year, are available digitally everywhere and a limited physical version on 7″ vinyl is available via Domino.

EMI Press Release

‘Not The Time’ video still

SASAMI (Sasami Ashworth) has been making music in the Los Angeles area, in almost every way you can, for the last decade. From playing French horn in orchestras and studios and playing keys, bass, and guitar in local rock bands (Cherry Glazerr, Dirt Dress), to contributing vocals/string/horn arrangements to studio albums (Curtis Harding, Wild Nothing, Hand Habits) and producing on tracks for other respected artists (Soko), she has gained a reputation as an all-around musical badass.

After graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 2012, SASAMI spent her time scoring and making orchestral arrangements for films, commercials and studio albums, as well as being a deeply committed music teacher in Los Angeles. She spent the previous two and a half years touring the world non-stop playing synths in the band Cherry Glazerr and is now taking a turn to focus on her own music. SASAMI has already shared bills with the likes of Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, Liz Phair, The Breeders and Blondie.

Praise for SASAMI:
“SASAMI is rock’s next big thing.” The FADER
“Ashworth’s chronicle of self-sacrifice for an undeserving lover is heartbreaking, but its her refined and exuberant sound that makes ‘Callous’ thrilling and personal.” Pitchfork, Best New Track
“With a sound that mixes ’90s distorted jangle-rock and guitar pop as practiced by My Bloody Valentine, the Breeders and Teenage Fanclub, the L.A.-based singer and songwriter Sasami Ashworth’s initial songs possess an enviable effortlessness, as though her muse has its own lane on the aesthetic superhighway.” LA Times
“Ashworth demonstrates her chops as a composer and musician… Has the polish and assuredness of someone that’s been honing their craft for a long while now.” Stereogum
“Has both an airy dream pop side and a heavier grungy side, and Sasami blends those sounds with expertise. It’s really good, effortlessly enjoyable stuff.” Brooklyn Vegan
“Searing solos” The Observer
“The Los Angeles artist melds raw emotion and blurry guitar chords” Music Week

Cautious Clay teams up with Hudson Mohawke and Tobias Jesso Jr. on new single ‘REASONS’

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

“A 24 year old with a very, very bright future ahead of him.”
Zane Lowe, Beats 1

“A self-indictment delivered like an R&B love song.”
The New York Times

“…a stunning, hushed lament that plays out like a lovers’ quarrel about commitment (or lack thereof) that’s still reeling long after the last words have been thrown…”
NPR

“This is about as close to an angel as you’ll hear in the modern context.”
Indie Shuffle

“…a meditation on human interaction in the age of dating apps and social media.”
Pitchfork

“There’s something special about him, and he keeps revealing new layers to his creativity that continue to pull us in.”
Complex

“Cautious Clay continues to shine with new single “Crowned.”
Hypebeast

“Cautious Clay is a name you’ll want to keep on your radar.”
Pigeons and Planes

“‘Crowned’ is ear candy for any listener but also serves as vitamins to the consciousness.”
VIBE

The 24 year old Brooklyn artist CAUTIOUS CLAY today shares his new single ‘Reasons‘ taken off his forthcoming EP set for release in early 2019. The track was co-written with Hudson Mohawk and Tobias Jesso Jr., and produced by Hudson Mohawk and Cautious Clay.

‘Reasons‘ examines the interwoven nature of pleasure and purpose and how these notions can relate to happiness and sees a significant sonic shift for Cautious. The track departs from the darker experimental R&B sounds of previous singles into a brighter, hard-hitting soundscape that still manages to compliment his soulful vocals and accent his lyrics.

Hillydilly says, “Cautious Clay’s rapid rise to prominence has been incredible and justified. After his debut EP almost a year ago, he’s been consistently dropping great music, and he continues on this trajectory with his latest single, ‘REASONS’. The singer-songwriter has one of his catchiest songs to date in this one…”

‘Reasons‘ rounds out a busy year for Cautious Clay who has in the last 12 months alone, released a slew of brilliant singles including ‘Cold War‘, ‘Joshua Tree‘, ‘Stolen Moments‘, ‘Juliet + Caesar‘ and more, completed a sold-out a run of headline shows across the US, collaborated with notable artists such as John Mayer, AlunaGeorge and Lil Silva, was featured on HBO’s Insecure Season 3 Soundtrack, highlighted as a breaking artist by Zane Lowe on Beats 1, named a Soundcloud Artist to Watch in 2018, performed on NPR’s beloved Tiny Desk video series, and garnered the attention of VIBE, The New York Times, Pitchfork and more.

With a North American headline tour this January, 2019 is set to be the biggest year yet for Cautious Clay.

‘Reasons‘ is independently out now, buy/stream it now on
Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, YouTube and more.

Jay Cooper shares new track ‘Irrelevant’

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

Sydney-raised, LA-based producer Jay Cooper (FKA JaysWays) today reveals his second track ‘Irrelevant’ from his upcoming Interim EP set for independent release in 2019.

Jay Cooper shares, “Irrelevant is about the freeing feeling of moving in connection with someone, finding a mutual potential in each other that drives you forward. Not trying to over analyse how or why you found yourselves so closely interconnected, just letting the raw feelings take their course. The satisfaction of meeting someone who’s willing to match you, challenge you, see through your eyes and understand how you feel.”

‘Irrelevant’ follows his most recent single ‘Shallow Anthem ft Apollo’ which saw a premiere on Thursday Arvos with Tommy Codling on FBi Radio, playlist additions across triple j Unearthed and praise from the likes of Pilerats and more. In 2017, Cooper departed from his earlier moniker and released his debut single ‘Say Something’, which independently made its way on Spotify’s Best New Music of 2017 playlist.

The upcoming Interim EP documents the growth of an artist. It covers the theme of change, from the place in-between where you’ve been and where you know you can be, the bridge/tunnels to your self-realisation and purpose.

Jay Cooper resides between Vancouver and Los Angeles and continues to create alongside the More Than Enough collective featuring artists Jahi Sundance and Annahstasia Enuke. Most recently, Cooper worked together with Grammy award-winning artist Robert Glasper, Jahi Sundance & Common on the comic soundtrack CASTER, which also stands as the first time in history that anyone has scored a comic book.

‘Irrelevant‘ is out now.
Buy/stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Soundcloud and more now.

MAGNUS ENLISTS AWARD WINNING TEAM FOR THE FIRST TASTE OF NEW ALBUM WITH RECENTLY RELEASED SINGLE “SAINTS, SEDATED”

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

CATCH THEM AT THEIR SINGLE LAUNCH ON SUNDAY DECEMBER 16TH AT FRANKIES PIZZA BY THE SLICE IN SYDNEY

“Numbing hooks tied with groovy basslines, jam-worthy riffs and a voice so goddamn powerful the US are using it to overthrow Russia.”

– Blunt Magazine

Sydney’s Oddly Timed Stoner Jazz Rock with a Dash of Goth three-piece Magnus (fronted by leading man Arne Heeres) formed in 2012 to bring their urgency, fearlessness in experimentation and healthy disregard for genres to Australian music. After a busy year recording in 2018, Magnus return now with new single “Saints, Sedated”.

Live Magnus, derived from “Magn-hus” and translating as “powerhouse” in Old Norse, are defined by their name. Set up as a power trio which gives maximum impact and at times space for each instrument to shine separately. As a testament to their intense live performances, a casual open mic at Melbourne’s famous Cherry Bar landed them a residency and nomination for Cherry Bar’s best live band of the year award by invite of none other than owner James Young himself.

Since their debut album’s release in 2016, it’s received critical acclaim by both online and print media with The Sydney Morning Herald stating that “The band clearly likes to tease and with terrific self-confidence in their undoubted abilities the approach does create a lively anxiousness within their music.”.

In 2018 recording of the follow up album took place under supervision of Five time Aria award winning producer / engineer Paul McKercher with COG’s Lucius Borich on drums it promises an even more raw and visceral approach yet still including the unexpected twists and turns Magnus have become known for. Both Paul McKercher and the legendary Bob Clearmountain (Grammy winner, USA – Rolling Stones, Springsteen, The Preatures) have been mixing songs and Brian Gardner, Grammy winner and known for Queens of the Stone Age’s Songs for the Deaf album, mastering the album.

“I had met Lucius Borich (COG’s drummer) a few years ago while looking for an engineer/producer for the very first EP. An incredible drummer and great guy. Anyone with a clue will tell you that the rhythm section is the most important part of the band. And watching Lucius and Blake Cateris (bass guitar) fly through the songs like all those key & time signature changes and generally odd song structures don’t exist was amazing. Both of them contributed so much to the record, with Loosh even adding backing vocals, keys, percussion and what not later in his own studio in Byron Bay.” – Arne Heeres (Vocals/Guitar)

Gramatik Releases New Beat Tape: Street Bangerz Vol.5 – Out Now

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

For Slovenian born producer and DJ Gramatik, 2018 marks one of the most pivotal years in his career to date. Riding off the successful launch of his GRMTK Ethereum token, the subsequent release of two singles in support of this fascination with Blockchain technology- “Vitalik Buterin” and “Future Crypto,” his fifth consecutive sold-out show at Red Rocks, and an incredible tribute to the late Aretha Franklin on “Let Me Know The Way,” Gramatik is now taking it back to where it all began on his Street Bangerz beat tape in 2008. In celebration of the ten-year anniversary of Street Bangerz, Gramatik is returning with the now fifth installment in the series – Street Bangerz Vol.5.

Compiled of 12-brand new Gramatik productions, the project is easily recognizable as a future fan-favorite thanks to Gramatik’s familiar and steadfast production style on the tape. Again pulling from influences of hip-hop, glitch, trip-hop, electro, and dubstep, SB5 also features collaborators Chris McClenney, Adam Stehr, The Geek x VRV, Adam Deitch, and Anomalie.

““When I discovered you can make music on a computer, collage sampling old soul and funk records to make hip hop beats was the very first music I made back in high school in the early 2000’s. Some of those beats ended up on my first beat tape SB1 which came out Dec 3rd 2008, and gave me my start in the world of music making. I felt it would be appropriate to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of SB1 with the 5th volume, made in very much the same way as back in the day, but with an updated sound due to the benefits of modern music making tools and production techniques. It was a fun trip down memory lane and I hope that fans of the series will enjoy it as much as I’ve enjoyed making it. Also, I have plenty of beats left over for SB6. Oh yeah and I’m also working on Re:Coil Pt. II and a full length LP for 2019 ”
-GRAMATIK

Up next for Gramatik, he’ll be gearing up for the release of ‘Re:Coil Pt. II,’ the follow up installment of ‘Re:Coil Pt.1,’ a release exploring science/technology related themes that featured Branx, Anomalie, Balkan Bump & Talib Kweli, Galactic Marvl, and Eric Krasno. Gramatik isn’t quite finished there- 2019 will also see the release of a highly anticipated full-length album- his first since 2016’s pivotal LP Epigram. As far as Gramatik’s upcoming live dates, 2019 will see him performing a limited run of festival stops including Electric Forest and a headlining performance at Sonic Bloom.

UK scene leader Richy Ahmed returns for most comprehensive Oz tour yet

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae
Tour Dates
Saturday 29th December: Faction, Sydney
Sunday 30th December: Beyond the Valley, VIC
Sunday 30th December: Revolver, Melbourne
Monday 31st December: MCA, Sydney
Tuesday 1st January: Habitat Garden Party, Perth
Richy Ahmed is at the forefront of UK house music; having played a major part in the British house music’s recent renaissance, he takes cues from disco, techno, funk, electro and hiphop. Hailing from South Shields in the north of the UK, Richy continues to make regular appearances at events across Britain whilst touring internationally. His hardworking approach has seen him play everywhere from BPM Mexico and Blue Marlin Dubai to Berlin’s infamous Panorama Bar. His Ibiza presence is undeniable; this season, he held down his well-known residency at Paradise, DC-10 whilst also becoming one of seven all-night guests to take over the Space Terrace for elrow. With so many high profile gigs, he earned himself a spot in the now defunct Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ poll three years in a row.

Whilst Richy is certainly a mainstay within the Hot Creations family, one of his key releases of 2015 was the ‘Can’t You See’ EP on revered dance label Strictly Rhythm. He remains a prolific remixer, with these appearing on the likes of Circus, Suara, Truesoul, Crosstown Rebels, FFRR and Hotflush Recordings to name a few.

Now, Richy is branching out with his brand new label, Four Thirty Two. It launched with his well-received ‘Put Me In A Trance’ EP in 2016. The label offers Richy a chance to A&R the music he loves, as well as to put out unique material of his own. It will be kept to a few releases a year, often from undiscovered and smaller artists who are putting out the high-quality material that Richy believes in. A strong focus on artwork and vinyl are at the centre of the label’s ethos, with certain releases being tuned exactly to 432 Hz – a method commonly used by John Lennon and Bob Marley, and the label’s namesake.

The release of ‘Put Me In A Trance’ followed two of Richy’s own branded Four Thirty Two UK tours, where he played sold-out nights across the UK from Glasgow’s Sub Club to Mint Club in Leeds. The Four Thirty Two parties swiftly gained a reputation for both their intimate venues and quality atmosphere. Richy’s reputation as one of the best DJs and producers around is now firmly established.

NTRODUCING 15-YR-OLD SOUL FORCE ISABELLE BROWN

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

“It’s hard to believe that the full, raspy, deep voice – almost of the same calibre as Etta James, Aretha Franklin and the soul greats – belongs to a Brighton-based, 15-year-old girl whose next big chapter of life involves completing her GCSE’s next summer.” – Vogue

“nostalgic and fresh at the same time…this British teenager’s soulful voice will blow you away” – The FADER

“a sound that’s bursting with the soul of a seasoned woman” – Nylon

“It’s not just the maturity in the vocals that stands out…but also just the confidence of the arrangement, the lyrics, and the entire package” – Uproxx

Isabelle Brown is an old soul trapped in the body of a fearless fifteen year-old. Inspired by the rich emotions of Nina Simone and the force-of-nature energy of Tina Turner, her mature perspective and deep found artistry in soulful songwriting is reminiscent of the old-school R&B, jazz and hip-hop influences found in A Tribe Called Quest.

Already making fans out of taste-makers at Vogue, The FADER, Nylon, The Line Of Best Fit, Hypebeast and more, the Brighton, UK native has shared the music video for her new single “Places”, released via True Panther / EQT / Caroline Australia. The video is an intimate look into the artist’s world – shot mainly via iPhone at Isabelle’s Dad’s 50th birthday party the video moves between clips of her friends, family and the London streets – to the beat of her song.

Hoop earrings swinging, the scenes skirt from Isabelle’s home to cruising the streets of London joking with strangers and friends alike, as she innocently relishes on love and laughter. “’Places’ is about a place you can go where you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not,” Isabelle shared. “You can be yourself and be loved and accepted. When people hear it I’d love it if they got an overwhelming feeling of warmth and happiness, but that’s a bit of a reach so as long as they think the tune is decent then that’s alright with me.”

Isabelle Brown’s story thus far is not that of your typical precocious teen star-in-waiting: hard graft, grit and vulnerability, those core values of true Soul music, underpin her powerhouse vocals.

She wrote her first love song at the age of seven (“which when you think back,” she says now, “is an absolute laugh, as I’d never even kissed a boy but thought I was the number one romance guru”). Brought up between two creative, unconventional households – her parents separated around the same time – Brown’s irrepressible voice slowly began to draw on experiences of her own. She has spent the last few years singing, writing, performing and recording every weekend or school-holiday, with a close-knit circle of friends, collaborators and family protecting her (largely from her own furious ambition to “get on with it”) every step of the way.

Her curious, contemporary twist on these classic sounds is explored across her first mixtape ‘Only Having A Laugh,’ released in February 2018. Largely written and recorded when she was just twelve years old. With the release of “Places”, Brown embodies the soul and voice of a seasoned songwriter and vocalist beyond her years and confirms her status as an artist with boundless promise.

KYMIE RELEASES VIDEO FOR ‘NEEDS’

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae
“Kymie has been on our radar for a hot minute now… The track oozes the je ne sais quoi of a self-assured woman”
– ACCLAIM

“…she effortlessly flexes an incredible voice, and infuses her talents with RnB and pop sensibilities to create a modern take on a classic style and in doing so, she’s elevated herself to an entirely new level.”
– Purple Sneakers

“Kymie has already proven that she can sing confidently over a range of styles and BPMs, from the slow-burning ‘Suffering From You’ to summer bop ‘With You’ alongside Phil Fresh.”
– LIFE WITHOUT ANDY

Western Sydney’s Kymie releases an impressive debut video for ‘NEEDS’ today after turning heads and breaking hearts across the country following the single’s release in October. Premiering on tastemaker site Cool Accidents, the video sees Kymie telling the world how it is alongside a bad-ass Jeep and a landscape of Cronulla’s sandy planes underneath a setting sun.

Following its premiere on triple j’s Good Nights last month ‘NEEDS’ scored multiple spot plays and an add on triple j Unearthed and FBi Radio. Taking off online, the track landed on Spotify AU/NZ’s New Music Friday, All Aussie Hip Hip and Indie Arrivals. Apple Music backed the release on Best of weekand The A List: R&B and most recently added it to The New Australia with a debut on Beats 1. All of this combined with a myriad of blog love from across the digital sphere.

Kymie channels the sensual attitude of ‘NEEDS’ onto a visual that oozes an unparalleled confident sass. Directed by Risers Media, the dreamy beach locations are romanticised with pretty filters and glitch effects that completely fit with the song’s cool demeanour. “The NEEDS MV is strong, powerful and super playful, giving the audience an extra piece of how i was feeling when I wrote the track” says KYMIE.

With more music set for debut early 2019, prepare for the launch of Kymie’s explosive debut live show soon.

THE VIDEO FOR ‘NEEDS’ IS OUT NOW.

New remix by Friendzone for Night Lights infectious critically acclaimed ‘Talk To Me’

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae
With members from Mexico, Japan, and Norway, Night Lights brings together an eclectic assortment of indie, rock, and soul influenced sounds in an effort to make people dance and feel feelings.
The now Los Angeles-based band met while attending school in Boston, and have since discovered a balance between profound lyrics, hooky melodies, intriguing harmonic progressions, and danceability. They are inspired by the likes of Mutemath, Two Door Cinema Club, Friendly Fires, and Radiohead, yet they found their unique sound in the midst. The band’s songs touch on the subject of existentialism and the confrontation of the self, hoping to discover a truth grounded in music, community, and conversation.
Their diverse backgrounds (coming from 3 different continents) and story of “moving to the US to ‘make it’ as musicians” has been an interesting topic that has garnered attention from the likes of NPR, BBC World News, LA Weekly, Sonicbids, and more.
Night Lights released their catchy indie pop single “Childish” in 2016, which earned features from EarMilk, Indie Shuffle, Music Times, and many more. Shortly after being released, the song made it’s way into both the Viral 50 Global and Viral 50 US Spotify charts, and has been played over 600K times on the platform.

Now, Night Lights has moved across the country from Boston to LA, they have all secured the coveted O1 artist visas, and are ready to take the music industry by storm starting with the release of their hooky pop/rock single “Talk to Me”. “Talk to Me” was produced by Brian Philipps, who is credited on tracks such as Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up & Dance,” COIN’s “Talk too Much,” and many many more records within the pop/rock genre.

CARL COX & ERIC POWELL ANNOUNCE ‘MOBILE DISCO’ MELBOURNE AT PIKNIC ÉLECTRONIK THIS JANUARY 20

by the partae December 6, 2018
written by the partae

After the success of the very first overseas ‘Mobile Disco’ in Bali recently, Carl and Eric also just wrapped up a string of Australian & New Zealand Winery Tour Dates featuring the fabulous: Cece Peniston & Robin S! Where the Music Policy was strictly: Funk, Disco, Soul Grooves & Classic House!

From Carl & Eric:

“The Mobile Disco tour was fantastic this year, we absolutely love this event.  It is an opportunity for us to dig into our record collection, play some of our most loved tracks, songs that were part of our growing up, songs that have influenced us over the years.  It is a pleasure for us to share the music.  This tour was a tour of ‘firsts.’ In Brisbane, we went to Roma Parklands for the first time, we also went to the Barossa Valley, Canberra and Queenstown, all for the first time.  Each event was unique. For Brisbane, we were right in the city of the tiered levelled venue and it was fantastic, the crew definitely brought a huge vibe to the event! Queenstown, the adventure capitol, the weather a month out looked like it was going to be clear skies and sunny.  Just three days out from NZ the weather (using the travel agent’s words) “looked horrific.” With multiple flight cancellations we finally caught a connecting flight (with little time in-between).  The weather Gods were on our side and the worst of the Queenstown weather held off.  Queenstown crew turned up and they were ready! It was cold with a bit of drizzle but you guys came prepared and we loved it.  It was our first time in Canberra too and it was amazing! Set in the beautiful Botanical Gardens, we’d like to send a big thank you to the ‘Kicks Entertainment’ crew, for the great set up and a fantastic crowd.  Finally, the last show of the tour was at the stunning Barossa Valley.  As you know, we are the ‘Mobile Disco’ and move around, so it was a special venue in Seppeltsfield, what a history, the event space was placed right amongst the gum trees.  Thank you to Seppeltsfield – SA, Cargo Brewery at Waitari Creek – Queenstown, Kicks Crew – Canberra and Brisbane Tourism/Marketing/Events and Parklands for making it a tour we won’t forget.  Also, a huge thankyou to Robin S and Cece Peniston.

Melbourne, as you know it’s not possible to do a ‘Mobile Disco’ this coming February and we have had lots of messages asking if we could do another date.  Well we have been working really hard to find another venue and get the permits through in time and we are happy to say that we have a city centre, green venue: Piknic Électronik at The Sidney Myer Music Bowl.  This will be a thank you gig for all the Mobilizers that have supported us over the years, with a special priced ticket.  We are going back to basics with Carl and Eric on the decks from the beginning to the end.  See you on the Dancefloor!”

Where are you currently based and what is the music scene like there? I am currently based on the Gold Coast. Live music here is not too bad, there are a couple great venues to play and we seem to be getting more and more major artists booking in a stop on their tours on the GC. There does seem to be more of a buzz in Brisbane, which is only an hour way and not too far to get to. You recently collaborated with with Jarryd Shuker (The Art of Sleeping) please let us know what the both of you worked on? Yes I did. Jarryd produced Alive my debut single with me. We met up about once a week for a good couple of months this year and worked on Alive, as well as some new tracks hopefully to be released one day soon. He is a great producer and writer and he really believed in the project just as much as my self. I am super grateful to have been able to work with him on my debut release, and I am even more grateful to now call him a friend. I hear that you have an EP in the works, what has been influencing the sound and songwriting? Well it’s another big debut for me and by the time the release comes the aim is to have people sit up and take notice. The tracks I think are all so different, which makes total sense having all been written over a few years. The sound is influenced by a combination of the team of producers I have been working with and myself falling in love with electro pop music. The brief I set for this EP was I wanted to be able to groove hard! Very broad, I know. But I am pretty confident that we have come up with some serious jams. I am hoping that this collection of tracks will really show the potential I have to be in this industry and hopefully stir a serious buzz for d e n n i s. How do you usually go about writing music? Writing music varies a little for me. I really love to write with other likeminded producers/artists as well as on my own. However collaboration is definitely key for me. I believe collaboration is important; it keeps out creative minds on top of our game and sometimes it may feel as if we have met our rival, but healthy competition is good and it pushes us to want to create further than what we already know. When will you be releasing the EP? The date is yet to be confirmed, however it looks like the half way mark of 2019 and the debut EP will be here! Who are you listening to at the moment? Right now I am on the BROODS vibe. I am totally digging their recent releases and am so keen for more new music from them. The new E^ST EP is also a cranker! I also as cliché as it is right now am pumping the Xmas tunes! My absolute favourite is ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside” – Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Jordan. What do you like to do away from music? Honestly so many things but right now its perfect weather on the GC to be at the beach. So probably spending a day out on the water boarding and sunbaking is my top thing to do when I’m after a break from music. What do you have planned for 2019? I feel like I have set super big plans for myself in 2019! Releasing more music is number one. Playing some live shows will be super nice and hopefully I get to make some new music friends and starting building a name for my project! I’m pretty stoked for 2019 to get here already! How did you first start playing music? Music has been all I have ever known since I was pretty young. Everything sort of began because my neighbour showed me how she could play the piano and so then I wanted to be able to do the same. I am super lucky that my family and my Mum and Dad in particular saw that music was serious for me and encouraged me to pursue music as a career. Not everybody is fortunate enough to get that type of support so I really do consider myself lucky. Plus growing up in a small town, there isn’t always a lot to do! Favourite food and place to hangout? There is this pasta/pizza roof top bar – Justin Lane in Burleigh Heads (GC) right on the beach and its super hip and trendy. Definitely is where you want to be on a Sunday afternoon as the sun is setting and is also definitely where I plan to be all summer long.

NEW ZEALAND PRODUCER BAYNK RELEASES COLLABORATION WITH AUSTRALIAN POP SENSATION GLADES

by the partae December 5, 2018
written by the partae
BUY/STREAM: BAYNK – OFF LIMITS FEAT. GLADES
“Surefire Banger” – Noisey
“electronic adrenaline rush” – HillyDilly
“a divine mixture of light and shade, the rough with the smooth” – CLASH
“shows off the simple ‘less-is-more’ songwriting…a staple of his output” – Complex
“eternal summer vibes” – C-Heads Magazine
Breakthrough New Zealand producer and songwriter BAYNK has today released his new single “Off Limits,” a collaboration with Australian pop sensation GLADES. “Off Limits” is a slick electro-pop gem, showcasing BAYNK’s incredible knack for embracing modern musical innovations, brought to life with the serene sounds of GLADES vocalist/guitarist Karina Wykes. The track is available everywhere now via All Points – listen here.

On the release, BAYNK (real name Jock Nowell-Usticke) explains “I had always wanted to work with GLADES after hearing Karina’s voice pop up on the radio one day. It’s so unique and interesting. Once I got to their Airbnb I realised how much of a writing powerhouse the whole group is and how in tune they are with each other. The whole process was easy & natural and the song just sort of fell out of my brain.”

With GLADES further detailing “We wrote “Off Limits” with BAYNK while we were writing the album in our Airbnb living room-turned-studio on a hot summer LA day. There was a dodgy looking rope swing in the back that none of us wanted to try, but he was the first one to try it. “Off Limits” is about being scared of admitting your feelings for someone. When you’re afraid to cross the line, in the fear of losing something that’s already so good.”

BAYNK has also announced a 2019 North American headline tour. The tour is set to hit 13 cities and will kick off January 31 in Boston, with Australian artist Golden Vessel confirmed as direct support. Tickets are on sale now.

The tour announcement comes on the heels of BAYNK’s Nov/Dec 2018 tour as special guest with San Holo. June 2018 saw BAYNK set out on a debut U.S. headline run, selling out *all four shows* in NYC, Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Denver.

BAYNK has seen a meteoric rise from sheer obscurity to the brink of breakout in just 2 years with releases amassing over 65MM+ streams across platforms to date. Recent single “Settle” with UK artist and vocalist Sinéad Harnett was supported by a video co-directed by BAYNK and Spencer Graves, whose credits include work with Kendrick Lamar and Lauv.

GLADES are an electronic-pop trio from Sydney, who were propelled into the limelight through endorsement from Troye Sivan for their cover of his single “Fools” in 2015. With a massive 80MM streams of their singles to date, they have just released their acclaimed debut album To Love You.

The new single is a precursor to an upcoming EP from the NZ producer and a follow-up to a previous double A-side release “Be In Love” / “Years,” which dropped earlier this year. His first release since fall 2017’s debut Someone’s EP, the double A-side was released alongside an incredible video for “Be In Love,” which was also co-directed by Spencer Graves.

Stay tuned for more news to follow.

HOLLY HERNDON releases collaboration with Jlin (feat. Spawn) ‘Godmother’

by the partae December 5, 2018
written by the partae
In a new collaboration, Holly Herndon & Jlin have released ‘Godmother’ out now via 4AD / Remote Control.

“For the past two years, we have been building an ensemble in Berlin.

One member is a nascent machine intelligence we have named Spawn. She is being raised by listening to and learning from her parents, and those people close to us who come through our home or participate at our performances.

Spawn can already do quite a few wonderful things. ‘Godmother’ was generated from her listening to the artworks of her godmother Jlin, and attempting to reimagine them in her mother’s voice.

This piece of music was generated from silence with no samples, edits, or overdubs, and trained with the guidance of Spawn’s godfather Jules LaPlace.

In nurturing collaboration with the enhanced capacities of Spawn, I am able to create music with my voice that far surpass the physical limitations of my body.

Going through this process has brought about interesting questions about the future of music. The advent of sampling raised many concerns about the ethical use of material created by others, but the era of machine legible culture accelerates and abstracts that conversation. Simply through witnessing music, Spawn is already pretty good at learning to recreate signature composition styles or vocal characters, and will only get better, sufficient that anyone collaborating with her might be able to mimic the work of, or communicate through the voice of, another.

Are we to recoil from these developments, and place limitations on the ability for non-human entities like Spawn to witness things that we want to protect? Is permission-less mimicry the logical end point of a data-driven new musical ecosystem surgically tailored to give people more of what they like, with less and less emphasis on the provenance, or identity, of an idea? Or is there a more beautiful, symbiotic, path of machine/human collaboration, owing to the legacies of pioneers like George Lewis, that view these developments as an opportunity to reconsider who we are, and dream up new ways of creating and organizing accordingly.

I find something hopeful about the roughness of this piece of music. Amidst a lot of misleading AI hype, it communicates something honest about the state of this technology; it is still a baby. It is important to be cautious that we are not raising a monster.”

– Holly Herndon

Holly Herndon is currently working on the follow-up to Platform.
