Florian Picasso keeps the anthems coming with new track Hikari for Protocol Recordings

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

In 2015, Protocol Recordings gave young newcomer Florian Picasso his first major break, releasing his superb ‘Origami’ on an unsuspecting world. Later re-released with a vocal as ‘Want It Back (Origami)’, the anthemic track picked up millions of plays and became his most popular solo single. Since ‘Origami‘ the bond between Protocol and Picasso grew even more, with the release of ‘Only for your Love’ a collab track with Nicky Romero, ‘Hanabi’ with Raiden, and several performances at Protocol shows.

Once again Picasso chooses a Japanese name for his track, expressing his love for the Japanese culture and his Asian roots.  ‘Hikari’ means ‘light’ in Japanese, and this track is certainly befitting of that title with its bright, life-giving sound.

Warm on-beat synth chords immediately introduce us to the uplifting progression at the heart of this track. A delectable plucked riff dances its way on to of this backbone, with a gorgeous vocal synth bolstering its beautiful melody. A big snare build thrusts us to the drop where a joyous, stuttered take on this lead melody plays out through big trance chords and thick, buzzing bass. The main break twists and turns these superbly scintillating melodies further, launching us into one final fist-pumping, pyrotechnic-laden drop. Slick, brilliantly honed production galvanizes this excellent track, marking another hit for Florian.

‘Hikari‘ is Picasso’s third track in a month after ‘Glitch‘ and ‘The Answer‘ both announced his comeback in style. Making his mark once again with this hot new cut, he has shown that he is back for good and that 2019 is going to be a huge year for him.

New UK Tour of DUSKY PRESENTS: 4 lineups in 4 cities with Robert Hood, Lone, DJ Randall (acid house set) and more

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

The inimitable Dusky announce the return of their DUSKY PRESENTS event series with four dates across Bristol, Sheffield, London and Manchester. The duo will be joined by an eclectic selection of guests such as techno legend Robert Hood, R&S’s Lone, Dekmantel favourite Matrixxman, the resurgent Paul Woolford, and rising stars Sally C, Brame & Hamo, and KETTAMA.

Fresh from a smash US tour and the release of their much-loved ‘Aset Forever’ EP (supported by Rampa, Red Axes, Adam Beyer among others), Dusky are getting back to their roots and their prominence within the UK underground scene by focussing on their event series, DUSKY PRESENTS. Each event and lineup is meticulously curated to ensure a night of authenticity which embodies everything they’re about as artists, producers and label A&Rs. They’ve mingled their heroes and long-time friends with 17 Steps debutants, including Brame & Hamo and Kettama who join the label with their Aset Forever remix package.

“The Dusky Presents series is a chance for us to showcase artists we have always admired, or have caught our eye recently. It’s always an honour to curate – and programme – line-ups with our favourite artists, and we’re excited by the variety of names joining us.” Dusky

The EP: Heralding the tour, the ‘Aset Forever EP – The Remixes’ with Brame & Hamo and Kettama drops 14th December.
Irish born, Berlin-based duo Brame & Hamo rework ‘Amongst The Gods’, combining distorted kicks and industrial percussion with euphoric samples from the original, to create an unequivocally rave-ready flip. Fellow Irishman and rising star KETTAMA transforms ‘Staunch’ from a darkly brooding cut into a thumping hard house epic spiked with zapping synths and hefty percussion.

The Tour: Dusky’s well crafted and diverse DJ sets, along with their live show and 17 Steps imprint, have earned them a place at the forefront of electronic music, but nothing matches their particular mix of talents more perfectly than a Dusky DJ set on home turf – this time supported by some of the most respected and cutting-edge names in electronic music.

REZZ joins forces with Blanke to deliver collaborative new single, ‘Mixed Signals’

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

New single follows the release of REZZ’s acclaimed second album ‘Certain Kind of Magic’

REZZ x Blanke –
‘ Mixed Signals’

Out Now

Buy/Stream ‘Mixed Signals’ Here

JUNO award-winning Canadian producer REZZ has unveiled her sensational new single, ‘Mixed Signals’, a sizzling collaborative record made with rising Australian producer, Blanke.

A throbbing industrial production which showcases REZZ’s signature style – a potent mix of bass heavy tones and sickly sci-fi sounds – ‘Mixed Signals’ is an unsettling thumper, blessed with Blanke’s dynamic hooks and pulsating chord patterns.

With Blanke’s music performed at the likes of Ultra Miami, EDC Las Vegas, Shambhala, Coachella and Lost Lands in 2018, the producer has also headlined two tours of his native Australia ahead of his North American Debut in February 2018, has received airtime from the likes of BBC Radio 1 and Sirius XM, en route to huge productions like his remix of PNAU‘s ‘Changes’ – which has clocked over 5 million streams on Spotify to date. His productions and remixes have been supported by the likes of Marshmello, Jauz, Illenium and Steve Aoki to name a few.

Arguably her busiest year so far, 2018 marked the release of REZZ’s highly-anticipated second album, Certain Kind of Magic. The production arrived on the back of a hectic summer run of shows, which included highly praised performances at Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, Coachella and Electric Zoo to name a few, with the Canadian recently playing at Red Rocks for her sold-out ‘REZZ Rocks’ show, delivering her spooktacular Halloween mix, ‘Nightmare on REZZ Street’ and her recent remix of Porter Robinson’s ‘Divinity’.

‘Mixed Signals’ represents a slick amalgamation of both artist’s tantalizing production styles. The single rounds off a spectacular year for the Canadian who recently completed her Certain Kind of Magic tour to critical acclaim and will be ringing in 2019 with an eagerly anticipated show in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve.

Martin Garrix & Julian Jordan combine for new STMPD RCRDS bomb Glitch

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

Martin Garrix and Julian Jordan have been friends for a good while now and began making tracks together before the world knew either of their names. After the outstanding previous collabs BFAM and Welcome comes another fresh track in the shape of Glitch — a project they started working on six years ago and only recently decided to finish.

LISTEN HERE
Centred around an expansive melody, Glitch is a powerful track with big drops, razor-sharp electro bass and colourful synth sounds. An array of different sounds are used to create minute fills. It’s a feel-good anthem befitting of both of their talents, and with all their experience and knowledge, the promise of this early demo has now been fully realised.
“When we are in the studio together, we are just having fun”  explains Jordanof their working partnership. “It’s just like friends hanging out and watching videos.“
Julian recently signed to STMPD RCRDS, with the massive Tell Me The Truth as his latest release on the label. With an amazing ADE under his belt where he hosted his own night and played a rocking set at the STMPD label night, he is gearing up for 2019 as Bootshaus New Years Eve headliner and one of his first gigs taking place at the amazing Dreambeach Chile in January.
Martin’s incredibly prolific schedule continues in the final weeks of the year, with two remix packages of his MIKE YUNG collaboration Dreamer lined up, he’s also touring in China and Asia this month.

BOOMTOWN INTRODUCES NEW TECHNO AND ELECTRONIC DISTRICT TO ITS MULTIDIMENSIONAL FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE FOR 2019 “AREA 404” HEADLINED BY CARL COX, FOUR TET & AMELIE LENS

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jSGmBhhz70&feature=youtu.be

Following a hugely successful 2018 edition, one of the most adventurous, colourful and immersive festivals Boomtown has announced the exciting introduction of AREA 404; an impressive Techno haven featuring some of electronic music’s most influential figures.

The four-day 60,000 capacity festival set in the Matterley bowl in Hampshire, UK on the second weekend of August, will construct a ground breaking and theatrical led new stage area; the distinctively Industrial, post-apocalyptic and expansive AREA 404 will be dedicated to the raw sounds within the electronic music spectrum.

Drawing deep inspiration from Boomtown’s innovative delivery and creative commitment, the proudly independent festival now in its 11th year, will also invite Drumcode and Bugged Out to host the stage for Friday and Sunday, respectively, with confirmed headliners across the Friday, Saturday and Sunday including Carl Cox, Four Tet and Amelie Lens.

Celebrating 25 years of Bugged Out, Australian Lo-Fi House luminary Mall Grab will join esteemed selectors Ben UFO, Joy Orbison, Phantasy Boss Erol Alkan and Boyz Noize as they also welcome Four Tet’s electronic illumination of sound to AREA 404’s intense landscape.

Saturday’s headliner is non-other than the ultimate Techno legend and one of the founding fathers of the Techno-House genre; Carl Cox.

The renowned DJ and figure head makes his sensational Boomtown debut with Eats Everything, Dirtybird leader Claude Vonstroke while the pioneering Skream is set to share the booth with fast rising and inspiring SAMA’.

Swedish techno platform Drumcode, will bring its uncompromising sound to Sunday with sets from Dense & Pika, Enrico Sangiuliano and a special b2b session from La Fleur and B.Traits before one of biggest names in Techno headlines proceedings. The unstoppable, Antwerp-born Amelie Lens’ ascension to festival main stages worldwide has been meteoric and cements AREA 404’s residence amongst the Techno elite.

AREA 404 is the latest progressive to arise from the deeply original and idiosyncratic vision of Boomtown’s creators, and added to 14 distinctly themed areas, hosting 27 main stages and 80 smaller street venues. The latest edition to the Fair is poised to instil excitement and eagerness within the electronic music community.

MMPH drops new remix EP on Tri Angle Records ft Roly Porter, object blue, Giant Claw & Forest Drive West

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae
“This song could easily fall apart with its frenetic pace, but it reveals itself more and more, and all those head-spinning sonics seem downright gorgeous with every passing listen.” – Pitchfork (on Woodlawn)
“Magnificently unstable energy pumps through the most straightforwardly banging moment yet from the David Byrne collaborator.” – The Guardian
“Han’s new EP for Tri Angle, both combine intricate orchestral instrumentation with darkly jagged electronics for a sound that punches you in the stomach as it worms its way into your brain.” – FACT

Today Sae Heum Han, better known by his stage name mmph, has dropped a new remix EP featuring new versions of each track from his recent release, ‘Serenade’ (out now on Tri Angle).

Following mmph’s production work on the recently released Perfume Genius’ latest single – a cover of Bobby Darin’s “Not For Me”, ‘Serenade Remixed’ sees the 24 year-old’s own tracks reimagined by acclaimed electronic composer Roly Porter, hyperactive cut-and-paste pop wizard Giant Claw, hotly tipped jungle techno artist Forest Drive West, and one of the most exciting producers to emerge out of London in the past year, object blue.

Listen to ‘Serenade Remixed’ on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/44l9eKVQdVlUZ5jjfWElpe
Listen to ‘Serenade Remixed’ on Bandcamp: https://mmph.bandcamp.com/album/serenade-remixed

Above Sae Heum Han’s desk hangs a blue and white crochet crucifix given to him by his grandmother. This object doubles as the artwork for ‘Serenade’. Separate from any religious connotations, the crucifix represents love, loss and hope – themes mmph explores on the EP.

Han, who also produced David Byrne’s grammy nominated album ‘American Utopia’ and serpentwithfeet‘s ‘Soil’which has been celebrated in many end of year lists, attended Berklee College of Music to study cello before shifting his concentration towards Electronic Production & Sound Design, a pivot that resulted in the birth of his project, mmph. mmph’s compositions exist at the intersection of analog classical music arrangement and forward thinking electronic sound production.

‘Serenade’ evokes a newfound expressive romanticism utilizing a broader palate of orchestral and electronic sounds. Melodically focused, orchestrally informed and rhythmically driven, each of ‘Serenade’s songs utilize a different classical trope to create Wagnerian suites in miniature. “Minuet” is a stately dance in triple time (performance), “Tragedy” is a play (death), “Elegy” is a mourning poem (death), and “Serenade” is a courtship song often played in the open air (love). Fusing synths choirs, arpeggiated (sometimes plucked) strings & steel string guitars, mmph creates a sense of extraordinary melodrama that feels more at home against the romantic backdrop of a Turner seaside cliff than a college student’s basement. Against these romantic landscapes, the baroque-feeling mini-operas of mmph’s ‘Serenade’ comes to life.

‘Serenade Remixed’ track list:
1. Serenade (Giant Claw Remix)
2. Minuet (Forest Drive West Remix)
3. Tragedy (Roly Porter Remix)
4. Woodlawn (biochemical object blue remix)

MAYA JANE COLES – ‘WAVES & WHIRLWINDS’ EP
RELEASE DATE: OUT NOW

LISTEN TO ‘WAVES & WHIRLWINDS’ EP HERE

A woman who is very much on her own level, Maya Jane Coles has continued to demonstrate her distinctive ability to create beautifully crafted, forward thinking dance music. Remaining very much in charge of her own destiny, Maya presents her latest EP ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’, via her very own label, I/AM/ME.

Inaugural title track ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’ provides a melodic and celestial intro to an otherworldly EP project. Moving forward, former single ‘Don’t Leave’ introduces guitar-like synth lines and droning bass, building in pace and tempo to create an inescapable sense of anticipation. The listener is invited to stay tuned for the ensuing transmission.

With an eerie and sinister feel, third track and single ‘Other Side’ forms the peak of the EP; brimming with emotion and euphoria. Elevating a bass driven house rhythm, with peculiar, angelic vocals. The listener is guided through a universe of twinkling synth lines and grungy dub elements. Onwards and upwards into ‘Visionary’, we are transported into a world of optimism. Coles lays out uplifting, driving synth chords peppered with signature droning dubby bass and subtle elements of funk.

Leading into ‘Isolate’, Coles plunges into the depths of her darker side. Signing off the EP with deep and dark, broken percussion and distorted vocal sounds, manifesting in a wholly sinister, downtempo experience.

Rounding off 2018, ‘Waves & Whirlwinds’ EP provides an interplanetary journey through the many moons of Maya Jane Coles’ boundary defying sound. The EP comes in the wake of an iconic moment for Maya, dropping EP single ‘Don’t Leave’ unannounced, alongside brand-new material from her darker alias, Nocturnal Sunshine. Accruing support everywhere from Rinse FM to Reprezent Radio as well as continued BBC Radio 1 plays from Annie Mac, Diplo and Mistajam, along with a US Billboard premiere, Maya Jane Coles continues to keep her bar firmly raised.

Tracklist:

  1. Maya Jane Coles – Waves & Whirlwinds
  2. Maya Jane Coles – Don’t Leave
  3. Maya Jane Coles – Other Side
  4. Maya Jane Coles – Visionary
  5. Maya Jane Coles – Isolate

Buy/Stream ‘Aries In Mars’ Here

Marking the 300th release on his very own Ovum Recordings label, Josh Wink has unveiled new single‘Aries in Mars.’  The record follows an incredible slew of releases with the acid weapon ‘Selecta’ and a reissue of Josh’s Size 9 project, featuring a remix from Eats Everything, released earlier this year.

Utilising deeply atmospheric chord patterns on the track, ‘Aries In Mars’ was influenced by his partner’s astrological observation, “when playing the record for the family at home, my partner stopped what she was doing and started dancing,” explains Josh. “Afterwards she told me how strongly she felt about the track and commented about how it seemed like it was based on my astrological sign of my ruling planet Mars being in my Aries,”  as Josh goes on to explain.

“The track had this strong, powerful, fiery and fierce fast paced animalistic passion. So I went into the studio the next day and added the vocal, switching the two as it had a better rhythmic flow.”

Marking a landmark triple-century of productions on his iconic imprint, ‘Aries in Mars’ arrives just before we enter a year of celebrations in 2019 with Ovum Recordings 25th anniversary at the summit of underground music in 2018.

Since his 1995 breakthrough hit ‘Higher State of Consciousness’, Josh Wink has proved himself as one of the most influential DJs and producers in electronic music. Josh has also featured on Bedrock’s 20th anniversary compilation, with further appearances on Cocoon’s Letter Series, and Soma’s 25th anniversary.

Performing all across the globe at events such as BPM Festival, CRSSD Festival, Movement, Tomorrowland, Music On, Neopop, Ultra Miami, and at Carl Cox’s ‘Final Chapter’ closing party atSpace Ibiza, Josh has firmly established himself as one of electronic music’s most creative and influential acts. Over the years, Josh has helped establish the underground scene in Philadelphia and beyond whilst standing the true test of time as a curator, label owner, producer, and DJ.

CLiQ’s massive Clap Clap gets the remix treatment on STMPD RCRDS

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae
LISTEN HERE

CLiQ’s massive club record Clap Clap gets the remix treatment on STMPD RCRDS. It’s a track that clearly demands repeated listening. Two new remixes are now here to give it more life still.

WILL K & Jebu tease out a dramatic breakdown with half-time beats and dramatic stabs before slamming us headfirst into a wonky bass house groove filled with distorted grunts, sirens and rumbling low end. Their remix continues to surprise with breakbeat switch-ups doing battle brilliantly with choice vocal cut-ups. The Australian duo make a welcome debut on STMPD RCRDS with this phat, furious rework.

Representing the cream of the Italian house scene, Gianni Romano & Emanuele Esposito bring a rolling groove to their remix, with pumping off-beat bass serving as the backbone to the hip-shaking beats. The vocal is used to its fullest degree as a nagging synth hook weaves in and out of the foreground. Heads down, hard-grooving house music.

CLiQ ‘Clap Clap (Remixes)’ is released on Friday 14 December via STMPD RCRDS.

HER SONGS – Debut EP Out Now & New Track/Video

by the partae December 16, 2018
written by the partae

RELEASE DEBUT EP – ‘HER SONGS LOS ANGELES‘ OUT NOW

RECORDED BY A COLLECTIVE OF INTERNATIONAL FEMALE SONGWRITERS IN LOS ANGELES IN SEVEN DAYS
BY MADDIE JAY (CA), EMILY BROWNING (NZ), THE NAKED EYE (UK/FR),
MARIE DAHLSTRØM (DK), DANI MURCIA (US/CO)

“this enchanting release is nothing short of blissful“
Somewhere Soul (Track Of The Week)
“pure magic”  Stereofox        “inspired and emboldened”  Clash
HER SONGS is a worldwide collective of female songwriters, who after meeting on social media as fans of each other’s work, came together in Los Angeles for seven days in August this year to create one shared, finished product. After teasing tracks from the EP, today the collective are thrilled to share the release in full –Her Songs Los Angeles is out now across all digital streaming services.
In tandem with the release, they have shared the final single and its brilliant accompanying video, which truly captures the essence of the experience and the shared bond between the girls. Listen to the soulful pop anthem ‘Alright‘ and watch the video here.
In the one week in which they were together, the artists; Maddie Jay (Canada), Emily Browning (New Zealand), The Naked Eye (UK/France), Marie Dahlstrøm (Denmark) and Dani Murcia (US/Colombia) wrote, composed, recorded and produced the finished five track EP, which also includes the songs ‘Holding My Own‘, ‘Just A Phase‘ and ‘Goodbye‘. On the experience, they explain:
“Our Los Angeles EP is a collection of songs inspired by our time together in LA. The challenge to write a song a day allowed us to pour every ounce of our focus, energy, and creativity into the project while simultaneously letting go of ego and expectation. Creating a bridge between countries, cultures, and distance was of importance to us, as we explored and pushed our own individual boundaries as artists.”
The concept of Her Songs was born directly from the girls involved as a way to manifest a sense of global support and connection between female/non-binary songwriters, musicians and producers. Combining their individual musical strengths and pulling on their varying backgrounds and knowledge, they plan to continue making music as a strong band of women.
The creative process in LA was at times streamed live (with over 150,000 views in one day) and captured by Malthe Milthers, who documented the week’s activity and has created an accompanying documentary mini-series.
L-R: The Naked Eye, Emily Browning, Dani Murcia, Marie Dahlstrøm, Maddie Jay
HER SONGS is:
Dani Murcia (Vocals, Piano, Guitar, Production)
Miami-raised, LA-residing Colombian Dani Murcia considers herself a storyteller, and feels a moral responsibility to share her personal stories through honesty and vulnerability in music. She started singing from a young age, but only began writing music when she started high school. When she tragically lost her father to suicide three years ago, she found comfort from sharing her music with others who sought solace in her words having experienced similar heartbreak and loss. Tori Kelly, Matt Corby and Nick Hakim are all influences of hers. Her debut EP ‘In My Mind’ was released one year ago, and is a collaborative effort between herself and six of her closest friends.
Emily Browning (Vocals, Guitar)
Emily Browning is an indie/soul songwriter from Christchurch, New Zealand, who started playing guitar aged 12. Influenced by the rule-breaking melodic direction and beautiful sounds of Emily King, Lianne La Havas and Nai Palm, Emily finds writing music a way of channeling her deepest thoughts, which she’d otherwise be too private to share.
The Naked Eye (Vocals, Guitar)
The Naked Eye is the artist name for French-English singer/songwriter/guitarist Francesca Hole, who is currently based in London. She describes her music as having Jazz-Soul-Ambient undertones, and writes autobiographical songs about life experiences, relationships and hardships. With a wide range of influences spanning Billie Holiday, Julie London, Joni Mitchell, D’Angelo, Radiohead, Hiatus Kaiyote and many more, The Naked Eye finds making music cathartic and empowering, and loves how you can start the day with nothing in a session and end with a song.
Maddie Jay (Bass, Guitar, Production)
Bassist turned songwriting and production enthusiast Maddie Jay made the move from Canada to LA to pursue a professional career in music. She is inspired by young artists doing exciting things, and name checks Kevin Parker of Tame Impala as an idol due to his creative vision and execution.
Marie Dahlstrøm (Vocals, Piano, Percussion, Production)
Danish artist Marie Dahlstrøm realised that she wanted to pursue a career in music when she started university in London, which is where she’s currently based studying a PhD in Music and Neuroscience. Her main motivation is personal experiences and having an outlet to be able to express whatever is on her mind in a safe place. One of her biggest influences is Musiq Soulchild, and another favourite is the jazz singer Lizz Wright. Gospel, Latin and jazz are all genres she spends a lot of time listening to.

Oakland raised rapper and songwriter, Just Rese fuses together a collective sound of funk, hip-hop, and alternative R&B. Through self-awareness and honesty, Rese has tailored his music and songwriting, to what he calls an “unapologetic version of himself.” His talents and efforts have awarded the lyricist great support from media tastemakers like Revolt, The Deli, Earmilk, The Bay Bridged, SF Weekly and many more. Rese has also performed extensively across the Bay Area, in addition, to collaborating on projects with a plethora of Oakland artists, including fellow hometown native, and ‘Jentrify’  rapper, Elujay.  Now, in 2018, Just Rese is ready to release his debut, ep ‘HIPS’ composed by Northern California producer, Wax Roof.

A project two years in the making, the libretto to HIPS is curated by Rese himself and features a seamless production composed of Wax Roof. The six tracker delves deep into a couple’s relationship, from its first hello to the final farewell, all while providing a scheme of phone call recordings between the couple. A cohesive project from start to end, HIPS hones in on Rese’s innate ability to tell stories and grabs the audience’s attention by addressing life experiences from his personal perspective. Beginning with the initial lovers    and friends stage, on the ep’s first cut “Groov,” transitioning to the couple undergoing relationship complications on “Lyin,” to ultimately being unable to receive and understand love in such high capacity on ‘Holding on.’ Rese’s charismatic wit and melodic rhymes shine over a host of diverse sounds including chopped and screwed, low-temp hip-hop productions, rock-and-roll elements and live band influences that jazz heads, hip-hop enthusiasts, and R&B experts alike will find solace in.

Stay tuned for further announcements still to come from Rese, and be sure to watch the music video to “Groove”

KOJI Announces UK & EU Tour Dates With New Music Coming Soon

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

Today see’s Andrew ‘KOJI’ Shiraki, an American born artist and activist announce a full schedule of UK and EU tour dates through January and February 2019. The tour, which hits 10 countries over 25 shows, will see KOJI share the stage with Such Gold and Ducking Punches through the UK and Ireland as full band performances, before heading to mainland Europe for solo headline shows.

Speaking on the upcoming dates Andrew ‘Koji’ Shiraki stated “I have been playing shows in the UK and Europe since 2007. I’ve toured there with Into It. Over It., Geoff Rickly of Thursday, and Bob Nanna of Braid/Hey Mercedes, but now, I’m absolutely thrilled to be coming back to the UK with some of my best friends in music, Such Gold, before heading to the mainland again for my headline shows.”

Having emerged from the same Pennsylvania DIY punk and hardcore scene that gave birth to Title Fight, Code Orange, and Balance and Composure, KOJI is best known for his splits with mid-west post-hardcore and emo favorites, La Dispute and Into It. Over It.

KOJI’s critically acclaimed first and only full length, Crooked In My Mind, was produced by Will Yip and released in 2013 on Run For Cover Records. The album saw KOJI enlist Brad Vander Lugt of La Dispute on drums, as well as both Ned Stark of Title Fight and Matt Warner of Balance And Composure on bass duties. In 2015, KOJI signed to No Sleep Records and released the ‘Fury’ EP ahead of his appearance on Vans Warped Tour.

Having taken a break from touring for the past few years, aside from four shows in Japan with The Movielife this past spring, 2019 will see a reinvigorated KOJI. “I’ve been writing, climbing, and operating a bar and community space I own in Brooklyn called, June.“ mentions Shiraki. “It was really important for me to take some time out, after spending my entire 20s on the road. It’s nice to finally live in one place.”

“I initially came off the road to do some spiritual and emotional repair. The decision to slow down came during the rise of both Black Lives Matter and Trump. I knew that I wanted to participate, better educate myself, and grow in certain ways I could only do in very localized community. Taking the time for myself has grounded me and I know that I’ll be singing from a deeper, stronger place in 2019. I’m ready for the year ahead.”

Activism has always been an important part of KOJI’s artistic practice. His work on prison abolition, hunger, literacy, labour and many other human rights issues has inspired a new generation of young DIY artists to approach music with a community-first mindset for which KOJI has become known.

Speaking on his activism work, KOJI said “I have regularly taken book and food drives on the road and held lots of events with direct action steps such as letter writing to government or incarcerated people.

“Now that I own a bar in Brooklyn, we regularly host fundraisers and awareness events for groups who work on prison abolition, immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, and anything else affecting the neighborhood or the world at large.

“It will always be important to me to use my platform to uplift others.”

Irish Neo-soul quintet Shookrah gets the party started with new video

by the partae December 14, 2018
written by the partae

“The band’s deeply psychedelic take on electro-funk has a soulful edge, the sign of a group willing to walk their own path. (…) There’s a disco side to Shookrah that comes to the fore on their new single, that sense of empowerment, of locating some righteous truth on the dancefloor.”

CLASH Magazine

“Shookrah, are not just a sibilance fan’s dream but also one of the most exciting bands around at the moment…the track (Gerascophobia) may be about the fear of growing up but you are certainly gonna want to grow old with this band”

Wonderland Magazine

“The Cork City-based band knows how to hypnotize with their bombastic sound.”

AFROPUNK

“Shookrah are a serious outfit and look destined for bigger and better things in the years ahead. Definitely a band on the ascent.” – JOE.ie

“Shookrah are a band who’s profile has been steadily gaining attention over the last few years – and rightly so. In an R&B that is ever-expanding, Shookrah stand out as a tight-knit collective of strong writers and even stronger performers.”

GoldenPlec

Ireland-based five-piece Shookrah has shared their brand new single “Flex” on 30th November via Broken Records, as well as a new accompanying music video. This single release follows on from their track “Don’t Wanna Doubt You”, shared in May this year, and continues the trajectory of highly successful year of writing and recording for Shookrah. The five-piece has already sparked international interest from a host of tastemaker publications, including Afropunk, CLASH Mag, Wonderland Magazine, JOE.ie, Irish Examiner, GoldenPlec and The Irish Times and have also enjoyed radio play on shows such as BBC Ulster’s Across The Line. The Irish Times crowned Shookrah, “Best Irish Act of 2017” and “50 People to Watch in 2018” while GoldenPlec named them one of their Plec Picks for 2016. The band has also been dominating the live music scene, playing headlining shows at Quarter Block Party, Wigwam and K-Fest as well as supporting music legends Billy Ocean and Theo Katzman (Vulfpeck) on their Irish tours.

Although the members of Shookrah are currently all based in Cork, Ireland, the members come from a variety of different cities and countries, including Cork, Kerry, Dublin and South Africa. The group is made up of Senita Appiakorang (lead vocals), Emmet O’Riabhaigh (drums), Daniel Coughlan (guitar), Diarmait MacCarthaigh (keyboard) and Brian Dunlea (bass guitar), all of whom have grown up with their own personal connection to music and creativity.

Inspired by cutting edge modern R&B-infused musicians such as Anderson.Paak, Janelle Monae, Solange, Princess Nokia, Hiatus Kaiyote, D’Angelo, Shookrah’s sound is reminiscent of Erykah Badu and Thundercat.

“Flex” is an uplifting whirl of self-confidence, sass, and camaraderie. The new single was recorded with Brendan Fennessy (O Emperor), mixed by Michael Heffernan, produced by Emmet O’Riabhaigh and Diarmait Mac Cárthaigh of Shookrah and mastered by April Golden, and is a triumphant track that oozes 90s-style R&B elements and confidence. Senita’s vocals effortlessly flow between low and sultry to anthemic and melismatic, all the while backed by the sexy, modern electronic big-band sound created by the rest of Shookrah. “Flex” calls on its listeners to summon their most extroverted and flamboyant selves, abandon the night’s emotional and social responsibilities and show off on the dancefloor. The music video for the track reflects this mood with flair and pizzaz; we are confronted with a host of bedazzled dancers, all dancing with pure abandon under neon lights. Senita grooves along with her funky companions, decked out in her best party get-up, letting us know that she’s going to “flex” on the dance-floor.

On Shookrah’s brand new single, Senita comments, “The song’s braggadocious theme is inspired by the emerging vogue-balls and drag culture in Ireland, specifically in Cork, where I recently stole the Drag-Queen title of ‘Miss Opulence’ at Miss Candy Warhol’s annual event. The song for me reimagines these safely created spaces amongst friends, ripe for invoking your most confident self, and falling prey to the music. ‘Flex’ very much embodies that, you’ve got Nile Rodgers-esque guitar picking contrasted with the devilish call of the synths and bass in the chorus alongside spooky vocals.”
