STREAM/DOWNLOAD ‘HOPE U LIKE MY MIXTAPE’ FROM MAY 8: https://doolie.lnk.to/mixtape On-the-rise Gold Coast singer-songwriter DOOLIE (Doolie Shadforth) today delivers her debut mixtape, titled with conviction and light-heartedness ‘hope u like my mixtape’. DOOLIE’s mixtape comes after a six-pack of artist-defining singles, the latest being empowering ‘It’s You Not Me’, produced with renowned electronic producer Kilter (Nicole Millar, Woodes, CLYPSO). Having connected with a tight crew of notable producers including Kilter (It’s You Not Me), Moonbase (Only For A Night), GXNXVS (Attention, 2:20), Cam Nacson (Slow Crawl), ALIUS (Conflicted), Paces (Don’t Run) and POOLCLVB (Freefall), ‘hope u like my mixtape’ is a spotlight on a soaring 12 months in and out of the studio for DOOLIE, all leading up to this pivotal moment. “It’s been such a journey to get to this point, these songs represent different times in my life and have come together as a soundtrack I wish I had. I hope they connect with anyone going through a similar time in their lives. The collaboration process on this mixtape, has helped me grow so much personally, as well as a songwriter. I’m so thankful for all the amazing people I’ve worked with, and who’ve been part of the process with me,” explains DOOLIE. ‘It’s You Not Me’ is inspired by the emotional roller coaster of “coming out of a breakup and taking off those rose-coloured glasses”, explains DOOLIE. “All the frustration and anger boiling up to the point where you gain clarity. I wanted to emulate that emotion through this song, especially the feeling of deciding that you mean it when you say you’re not coming back.” With a working relationship that stems back to performing together at Big Pineapple Festival in 2018, DOOLIE and Kilter have formed a powerful musical alliance reflected by this track. “Working with Kilter was so fun and he really captured the energy of the song in this production. He helped me change the structure up with a third verse instead of a bridge and I think that makes the song so much more impactful,” shares DOOLIE. Fronting a compelling catalogue of releases, DOOLIE has become a mouthpiece for millennial romance with her sharp and playful lyrics, delivering a fresh blend of mid-tempo pop/R&B with a dramatic edge, most recently putting her in a finalist position for the Gold Coast Music Awards’ inaugural Gold Coast Music Prize, as well as the People’s Choice award. Her impressive live performance has further established her presence, seeing her take the stage at festivals like Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival and Big Pineapple.   STREAM/DOWNLOAD ‘HOPE U LIKE MY MIXTAPE’ FROM MAY 8: https://doolie.lnk.to/mixtape   Tracklisting:   Only For A Night It’s You Not Me Attention feat. Aussie brothers, Travalley have today dropped their seriously fun, raucous new single, Dear Babe.  The track is accompanied by a fittingly bonkers video that sees the duo, Levi and Sam Mellington, munch through as many chillies as possible throughout the duration of the clip, and they’ll be celebrating the release with a livestream single launch on Saturday May 23 at 7pm on Instagram.   Upbeat and hooky as all getout, this driving indie rock track will be lapped up by fans of Lime Cordiale, The Jungle Giants, Hockey Dad and Skegss, and will have listeners toe-tapping, singing along with the insanely catchy backing vocals and coming back for more.  Recorded in a Melbourne home studio, engineered by Fabian Hunter and mixed and mastered by Austin Asvanonda (The War on Drugs), Dear Babe is about lead singer Levi’s lack of ability to be able to flirt or express how he feels. “I always manage to say the wrong thing or give too much away too early which tends to end up in the “what if I said this” situation happening over and over again and then repeating the process with the same results,” Levi explains.“About a year ago, I finally stuck to my guns and held back from blurting out everything about myself to a girl, I was so impressed with myself that I decided to write a song about all my past experiences, and now here we are! We just hope people really enjoy the song and get a laugh out of the film clip.”   Filmed and edited by Gareth Harrison (DJ for Yacht Club DJs who also tours regularly with DZ Deathrays and Dune Rats), the concept for the Dear Babe video was inspired by the DZ Deathrays The mess Up film clip where the guys drank as much alcohol over the duration of the song.  An extrapolation of this was then released by Dune Rats in Red Light Green Light where they smoked as much as they could.  Pretty chuffed with their ingeniousness with this video concept that is sure to set tongues wagging, and rightfully so, Levi explains, “We decided to continue the trend that these two amazing bands created, and stupidly ate as many chillies as we could within the time of the film clip. Little did we know that we ate far more than expected and experienced all sorts of pains for days after the video was filmed!”   Having spent a lifetime together, and the greatest part of it playing music together, the visceral bond present in their playing and their vocal harmonies is obvious, and their onstage banter is infectious.  And though the brothers have been combatting a heap of change during the Covid19 madness, they’re also able to see the positives. “We’ve had a lot more time to write new music and expand our sound, and we’ve had to come up with more creative ways to keep our fans engaged, but it’s also given us the opportunity to sit back and relax for the first time in a long time,” says Levi. “But like many other bands out there, we had to cancel our entire tour and a bunch of bookings too. The biggest thing we’ve missed is playing live to our amazing fans that travel to come see us play. Once this has passed and we are able to start playing music in front of people again, we can only imagine how amazing and hyped everyone will be to get out and have a great time.”   Dear Babe is released today. SLEAFORD MODS Share unlreleased track & video ‘Second’ Career spanning retrospective album All That Glue is out next week!

by the partae May 7, 2020
written by the partae

Following a sold-out debut Australian tour in March, which included standout performances at  Golden Plains, WOMADadelaide & more, Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods have shared a previously unreleased track, ‘Second’ and accompanying video as premiered via Rolling Stone. ‘Second’ is from the band’s upcoming retrospective, All That Glue, out Friday 15 May via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records. The video was directed by Robin Lee and features Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones) and Emma Stansfield (Skins, The Tudors). WATCH HERE.

As described by Rolling Stone “In the Robin Lee-directed clip, two actresses (Kate Dickie and Emma Stansfield) portray Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn in the Mods’ early days when they frequently played pubs. The women are pitch-perfect, down to Williamson’s Fred Perry polo shirt and Fearn’s omnipresent beer. The electronic duo is known for their unorthodox stage setup — Fearn turns on the beats and shuffles in place while Williamson loses it. The actresses do just that in the video, which ends with the pair giving the real Mods the proverbial finger.”

Boasting the swagger of a band that have never been more relevant, topically challenging and downright entertaining, Sleaford Mods – comprised of Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn – continue their onslaught with the release of All That Glue, a collection of songs spanning the last seven years of the band’s career – an array of crowd pleasers, B sides, unheard tracks and rarities for fans and the curious.

Over the past few years, have become one of the most intractable British pop stories. Their music is drawn at a flawless fault-line of anger, tenderness and humor, a triumvirate of raw energy. On record you can hear their sinews, live you can touch their veins. Check out an incendiary performance of ‘Tweet Tweet Tweet’ from the duo’s sold-out show last year at the 5,000 capacity Hammersmith Apollo in London. WATCH HERE.

Credit: Russell Hamilton Kamasi Washington today shares he has scored Becoming, director Nadia Hallgren and Higher Ground Productions’ documentary profiling First Lady Michelle Obama, which debuts on Netflix today. The score features new original music Washington—whom Hallgren asked to join the project very early in its development—composed for the film as well as selections from his catalogue. Watch a trailer for the film here. In addition, the score will be released next Friday 15 May via Young Turks Recordings / Remote Control on all streaming platforms, see full tracklist below and pre-save here. “Working with Kamasi Washington on the musical score for Becoming was a dream come true,” says Hallgren. “Not only is Kamasi a masterful musician, he also has a unique sensitivity that he pours into his music. His music reaches deeply into your soul. Mrs. Obama loves music, and when I read the line in her book ‘And heaven, as I envisioned it, had to be a place full of jazz,’ I knew immediately Kamasi was the artist that could interpret her experience musically. His sound is contemporary and timeless, a magical fit to her story.” “It was such a pleasure and honor to work on Becoming,” says Washington. “Michelle Obama is such an amazing person and this film gives a very unique insight to who she is, how she thinks, and the way she navigates the world. It’s truly inspiring to see! Working with the film’s incredible director Nadia Hallgren to create a musical palette to support this amazing piece was truly a blessing. I’m so thankful to her for the opportunity to be a part of this. Barack and Michelle Obama’s time as President and First Lady had an impact on the history of this country and the world that is hard to put into words, but both Michelle Obama’s book and Nadia Hallgren’s film do an amazing job of it!” Becoming is an intimate look into the life of former First Lady Michelle Obama during a moment of profound change, not only for her personally but for the country she and her husband served over eight impactful years in the White House. The film offers a rare and up-close look at her life, taking viewers behind the scenes as she embarks on a 34-city tour that highlights the power of community to bridge our divides and the spirit of connection that comes when we openly and honestly share our stories. Kamasi Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer born and raised in Los Angeles. His three bodies of work to date—The Epic; Harmony of Difference, an EP originally commissioned for the 2017 Whitney Biennial; and Heaven and Earth, are among the most acclaimed of the past decade. Gum Country (Courtney of The Courtneys) share new song ‘Tennis (I Feel OK)’; an ode to Courtney’s favourite sport

by the partae May 6, 2020
written by the partae

Gum Country today share their new single ‘Tennis (I Feel OK)’ taken off their forthcoming full-length album ‘Somewhere’, out via Dinosaur City Records (AU/NZ), Burger Records (USA), Kingfisher Bluez (Canada) and Waterslide Records (Japan) digitally, on vinyl, CD and cassette this June 19.

‘Tennis (I Feel OK)’ follows Gum Country’s debut single ‘Somewhere’, which premiered on April 7, drawing worldwide acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, Stereogum, Paste Magazine, Clash, KEXP, Northern Transmissions and more, seeing adds to Spotify editorial playlists All New Indie, Fresh Finds and Pitchfork Selects, and amassing 45,000+ Spotify streams in just over three weeks.

Listen and share ‘Tennis (I Feel OK)’ here.

Previous praise for Gum Country

“‘Somewhere’ will give you that same euphoric tingle you felt after falling in love with your first underground jangle pop band. Nimble guitar riffs swarm around Garvin’s subtle, sweet vocals, and it captures everything great about fuzzy rock and good-natured, classic indie-pop.” – Paste Magazine

“A phenomenal slice of totally ’90s droning guitar-pop bliss” – Stereogum

“Take a trip to Gum Country, and you might just find your new favourite band.” – For the Rabbits

“[Somewhere] merges a fondness for fuzzy lo-fi pop – C86 or Flying Nun for example – with its own brand of jangle pop minimalism.” – Clash

‘Tennis (I Feel OK)’, opening with fuzzy organs and snappy drums, is an ode to Garvin’s favourite sport.
Courtney explains, “Kinda goofy, but in all honesty my relationship with tennis is so meaningful to me on a spiritual level. It’s my meditation practice. The game makes you present, you’re repeating movements, and finding a rhythm. And it’s so creative. I think all athletes are artists. Plus you get to be outside, getting exercise, hanging with friends and all of those things are so good for you. So the song is pretty much about how tennis just makes my life better. I love tennis. If anyone reading this wants to play (after the pandemic) please hit me up.”

Gum Country are an indie rock band brought to you by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Courtney Garvin (The Courtneys – Flying Nun) and multi-instrumentalist Connor Mayer. Their self-described “harsh twee” project began back in Vancouver as a series of lo-fi four track recordings made in an apartment, very quietly. After relocating to Los Angeles where they currently reside, the pair recorded their debut full-length album ‘Somewhere’ with Joo-Joo Ashworth at Studio 22, this time at full volume.

Drawing on groups like Stereolab, The Replacements, The Breeders, Beat Happening, Yo La Tengo, Meat Puppets and The Magnetic Fields, Gum Country envelope and transform these influences in the warm embrace of Garvin’s fuzzy open-tuned guitar tone. Mayer’s driving drums and melodic keyboard accompaniments provide a backdrop for these rich textures, casually blending digital and analogue to produce a sound that would feel right at home on NME’s C-86 compilation.

The songs on ‘Somewhere’ meander through the highs and lows of daily life, touching on subjects ranging from love, loss, and anxiety, to tennis, video games, and gardening. Garvin navigates these topics with humor and sincerity, her unassuming delivery riding amidst the swirling instrumentals like a snowboarder shredding fresh pow.

‘Somewhere’ (album) will be released via Dinosaur City Records (AU/NZ), Burger Records (USA), Kingfisher Bluez (Canada) and Waterslide Records (Japan) digitally, on vinyl, CD and cassette this June 19.

Pre-order ‘Somewhere’ here. Keep up to date with Gum Country via Bandcamp and Twitter.

Sit around and think a lot
Sit around with my thoughts
Feelin’ like something I’m not
Maybe for now that’s all I’ve got
All I’ve got
All I’ve got
All I’ve got
All I’ve got

Why don’t we go down to the court
Why don’t we go down to the court
Why don’t we go down to the court
Why don’t we go down

Fuzzy green thing in the air
Over here and everywhere
Hit the ball until I rot
Back and forth and on that thought
It’s just a game
It’s all the same
And when it’s done
I feel OK
I feel OK

JUAN WAUTERS Announces new EP Más Canciones de la Onda Shares first single ‘Muy Muy Chico’

by the partae May 6, 2020

PRAISE JUAN WAUTERS

“La Onda de Juan Pablo is a rich travelogue packed into 10 effervescent tracks…. a sonically rich, emotionally textured work, driven by the relationships that organically emerged as Wauters found collaborators in every new country he visited.” – Nylon

“The album is picaresque in its depictions of everyday heroes and their daily quests against the decidedly frenzied backdrop of the Uruguayan singer’s American transplant sensibilities.” – NPR

“[Waters] has proved himself to be something of an unrelenting force of joy. His songs are simple little sing-alongs that bask in a youthful naivety.” – Pitchfork

“[Wauters] music… conjures up the folk titans who haunted the streets and coffeeshops of Greenwich Village back in the ’60s.” – AV Club

Today, Juan Wauters announces his digital EP, Más Canciones de la Onda, out June 3 via Captured Tracks / Remote Control Records. With the announcement he shares the first single ‘Muy Muy Chico.’ Wauters says, “the only time I left the cities where I was during the trip when I recorded La Onda de Juan Pablo was in Chile. I travelled to the south of Chile to visit a friend’s friend. There in Pucón, in the Andes mountain range, I wrote and recorded ‘Muy Muy Chico.’ This was the only song I did on the trip just by myself. It does not include anyone else playing anything. It’s just me and the guitar. The song was meant that way. It talks about how sometimes a person would obsess over someone else’s height and sees themselves smaller not realizing that everyone’s height is different. It’s really a criticism about the way the system we live under is designed to pile us against each other and not reward us independently for our own virtues.” Listen here.

Más Canciones de la Onda is comprised of five unreleased songs, recorded by Wauters as he was traveling South American to write the critically acclaimed La Onda de Juan Pablo. “These songs are not B-sides or outtakes. These are songs I really like. The only reason they didn’t make it on the album is because I thought the other ones flowed better together as a whole. In fact, some of these unreleased tracks are among my favorite ones from that time in my life,” Wauters explains.

On this EP, Wauters presents songs recorded in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and Chile, each with their own themes, and his journey ends right back where he started – at home, making music with friends. His immigrant’s side. His sense of belonging. His social life and his use of language. His need to work. And the even stronger need that his work doesn’t become monotonous. They are the same person: one among the whole crowd. He is here to share his songs, his field recordings, his videos and his live performances. Everything comes from the same creative head. Everything springs up with the same intention – not intentional at all – to express himself freely.

ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER RELEASE NEW TRACK 'FALLING THUNDER' FROM 'SIDEWAYS TO NEW ITALY' - OUT 5 JUNE

ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER RELEASE NEW TRACK ‘FALLING THUNDER’ FROM ‘SIDEWAYS TO NEW ITALY’ – OUT 5 JUNE

by the partae May 6, 2020
written by the partae
“this will likely come as no surprise, but it’s yet another great new Rolling Blackouts song.” – Stereogum

“a gently swirling indie pop track coaxing the listener into the ever-changing waves of time” – Consequence of Sound

“once again a perfect vessel to describe their moods shifting with the world around them. Packed with hooks on hooks, and no shortage of emotion bundled with them, this is peak RBCF.” – Beats Per Minute

Melbourne-based band Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever release new track & video, ‘Falling Thunder’ from their highly-anticipated second album, Sideways to New Italy, out Friday 5 June on Ivy League Records.

Following the album’s widely-lauded first two singles ‘She’s There’ (premiered by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1) and ‘Cars In Space’ (track of the day on KEXP), melodic earworm ‘Falling Thunder’ continues to find Rolling Blackouts C.F. at the peak of their powers: a swirling, mesmeric pop song that perfectly evokes the timeless nature of Sideways To New Italy – a record that’s universal yet threaded through with personal histories, born of dislocation but with a distinct geographic identity. Tom Russo explains it’s “about pushing on through the relentless march of time, against the constant cycle of seasons. And the way people change and relationships change. It’s set in that time when autumn is turning into winter and the trees are getting bare.”

The accompanying video (premiered overnight via The Fader) was shot by a friend of the band, Jamieson Moore, and is comprised of vacation footage from Sicily, Sardinia and the Aeolian Islands, the ancestral homeland of the Russo Brothers. As Tom elaborates: “Our friend Jamieson Moore shot the footage of Sicily, Sardinia and the Aeolian Islands on her phone while on vacation last year. The Aeolian Islands is also where my and Joe Russo’s ancestors are from. We were also planning to shoot the band playing in Eolian Hall in Melbourne (it’s a community hall founded by Aeolian immigrants). We got some practice footage but by the time it came to shoot the band, we were on lockdown. So it’s turned out as a kind of a love letter to a particular place.”

The eponymous New Italy is a village near New South Wales’s Northern Rivers – the area Tussie is from. A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pit-stop of a place with fewer than 200 residents, it was founded by Venetian immigrants in the late-1800s and now serves as something of a living monument to Italians’ contribution to Australia, with replica Roman statues dotted like souvenirs on the otherwise rural landscape. The parallel between these remnants of home and the band’s own attempts to maintain connections and create familiarity during their disorienting time on the road were not lost on Russo. “These are the expressions of people trying to find home somewhere alien; trying to create utopia in a turbulent and imperfect world.”

In addition to the specific town, the songs on the record exist variably in Darwin (‘Cameo’), Melbourne (‘Beautiful Steven’), Los Angeles (‘The Cool Change’), the tiny town of Rushworth (‘Not Tonight’) and the driver’s seat of a car at a drive-in movie (‘Cars in Space’). Rolling Blackouts C.F are well-versed in a detailed and cinematic style of songwriting, where landscapes, interactions and memories materialise as characters and stories that reflect the tight, swirling guitars that emote alongside the trio’s voices.

Where are you currently based? I am currently based out in Boronia in VIC. I’m sure you haven’t heard of it, for some reason no one knows where it is, haha. For a little context, I’m near Mount Dandenong and I am lucky enough to live with my Mama. How did you first start playing music? Honestly for as long as I can remember I’ve been singing, even as a child I would sing all the time. I guess I really started learning music properly when I started high school - I had singing lessons and trumpet lessons, I was that kid that was in alllll the school bands (so lame I know). But it really gave me so much confidence, I was that scared shy little kid when I started, but by the end of high school I was the crazy confident one. Your new single 'Do You Wanna' is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting? Ok, I love how this song came about, do I have a story for you. I started writing 'Do You Wanna' when I was taking a shower. I was listening to Jill Scott, when this melody just came into my head. I ran out to my piano butt naked for all the world to see, still dripping with water and wrote the song there and then. The song is about asking for consent from your partner, in the sexiest way you can. It's like a whisper in your ear that worms it's way into your head and stays there until you only have question left to answer, 'Do You Wanna'? I have to say that at the time it was Jill Scott, D’Angelo and Erykah Badu that influenced this whole track for sure. At the time I was completely obssed with their first albums, lets be honest I still am. So I wanted to create something that gave me that 90’s neo-soul vibe. Where and when did you record, and who with? How did you approach the recording/production and who did you work with? Oh man I have recorded this song in 3 separate places and over the last 2 years, because life haha. I started off with Julian Steel, who laid down the groove and most of the rhythm section as his home studio, then I went to Michael Cooper and we refined the track and added a lot of the extra sounds and synth deliciousness in the background, and finally I recorded all the vocals with my first producer Rino in his bedroom. Shout out to Bailey Judd for the second guitar part and Jordan Pereira for drums! Julian, Michael and Rino are some of Melbourne’s best young soul producers. When I was approaching this track I took inspiration from ‘cruisin’, the D’Angelo version that is, as well as a bit of Prince’s ‘Kiss’. Who are you listening to at the moment? I am fully obsessed with India.Arie, Pj Morton, Jamiroquai and Billie Eilish right now. I love old an school groove, soul, R&B and disco/funk music and its most of what I listen to during the day! There’s just so much life to it, and then there’s Billie haha, she's there when I am feeling down which I can say is happening a lot these days with Isolation in play. Which artists influences your music? That’s a big question, isn’t it. I think if I had to say one person, it would be Stevie Wonder. I truly think what he creates with is music is next level. He’s so smart in his song writing, and then the control of his voice is just next level you know. Outside of that I think as well, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Jamiroquai and Motown as a genre as well. There was a time when all I would listen to was Motown artists. What do you like to do away from music? I love to exercise; yoga, gym, walking and hiking. Moving my body just makes me feel so energised and connected. I also love food (cooking and eating), I mean who doesn’t love eating! But I will go to some very expensive restaurants with my mother just to try the food because I’ve heard it’s good. I go with my mum because none of my friends can afford it, and if I'm honest, neither can I haha, thanks mum.  What inspired the artwork for the single? I was fully inspired by George Costanza from the episode ‘The Package’. I took full inspiration and artistic direction from the 'Timeless Art of Seduction' section of the episode, and I think it just gives the song so much context. I’m not trying to take myself to seriously, I just want to be a bit tongue-and-cheek you know. Without a doubt, it was definitely the most fun I have had on a photoshoot. You were raised in Guyana and are now Melbourne based, please tell us about cultural differences: I mean that’s a hard one, I left when I was a kid so I have this mix of Aussie and Guyanese things in my life. It was such a different life there though, everything is so much more relaxed. We had a cleaner, Nanny and cook, we used to go out into the jungle on a regular basis which as a child I'm sure you can imagine is so cool. We lived right near the botanical gardens and there were manatees living in the water, I kid you not! We used to feed them grass by the side of the water, its one of my most cherished memories of back home. Guyana is a really poor country, a developing nation, so we didn’t have a lot of stuff - like on TV at the end of the day they used to broadcast about the deaths, births and marriages for that day, which is wild to me to think about now. At Christmas we always have pepper pot, which is this black stew that you cook for two weeks to mak,e and Garlic pork which you pickle in a mix of brine, vinegar, thyme, rosemary, chilli and garlic and then shallow fry in oil. It’s delicious and also takes about a month to make. I’ve lost my Caribbean accent which is really sad (mum still has hers and my friends love it), but I have a weird Aussie/American accent now that people seem to really like. I don’t know if I really answered your question, but I could go on for hours about home so I might just leave it there haha. Please describe your experience as a queer artist in Melbourne, Australia: I feel very isolated with that right now, I haven’t found my people yet. I know some queer artists but I have yet to really find where I belong in that space. I think it’s because I am generally not a big partier, I like to be in bed by 10 most nights, so getting out to a club on a Saturday night is a struggle for me, which my friends can attest to. There’s also very few of us I feel, even though I know some of us, we’re such a minority that I feel lost somedays. That sounds so sad, it’s not actually that bad. What's planned for 2020? I did have a plan to do a tour at the end of the year, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen now. But I am planning on releasing my second EP and some singles later in the year especially with all the time we have now. So get ready for some new music! Favourite food and place to hangout? Thai food and chocolate, I could eat them allllllll day. My fav place to hang out is at one of my friends homes for sure, doesn’t matter who, just good company and food of course!

Where are you currently based?       B: We're both living in our hometown of Newcastle!        M: Benny will never leave this bloody town - He's hooked! We both grew up here and I've recently moved back to be closer to the long haired/ golden voice of Benny for writing and band purposes. Cracking surf!   How did you first start playing music?       B: We both fell into it in similar ways I guess. Got given instruments from cousins that didn’t want to play anymore and found ourselves figuring it out in front of the speakers. Music takes a hold of you if you give it enough.       M: Benny actually had to teach himself how to sing because nobody wanted to sing in his first high school band. You know the 'short straw' trick? He literally unlocked his f*ucking amazing voice because of a bloody straw!  I slaved away in the school concert band on the drums since year 2 - this jerk gets a short straw thrown in his face and is now the voice of an era!   How did Boo Seeka form?       M: The universe has its ways of connecting people when you least expect it. Before this all started we weren’t even really hanging out together. Benny was drunk in Bali when he called me for the first time in 10 years to see if I wanted to be in a band with him. I thought he called the wrong number. Maybe he did and just ran with it. We will never know. but he's stuck with me now! + I think he thought I had slept with his sister at some point so that's awkward.        B: We'll never know....   You’ve just released your new single ‘Take A Look', what influenced the sound and song writing for this track?       B: We always know what we want to create, but getting that out of our brains and into the computer is one of the hardest things for us. But we think we did it for TAL.       M: The track is basically a message to ourselves. A message we took way too long to decipher, but glad we got there. You've been in the studio working on your forthcoming sophomore album with super skilled producer Matt Bartlem (who has previously worked with Matt Corby, Lastlings, Jarryd James). Please tell us how you came to work with Matt and how the experience and process has been as a whole.       M: We've recently just signed to new management - Untitled group, and they've worked closely with Matt previously. To cut the whole story short, the first minute we met Matt we knew he was going to be an integral part of this next album!       B: Originally we were just going to do one track with him, but TAL came out so good we knew we wanted him to do the whole record. He's got the best dog too so it pushed us over the edge.   How did you approach the recording/production process?        M: It's funny how every band would create their own process over time and although ours may be slightly dysfunctional or basic at times, it really allows us to write and create anywhere! Benny writes most of his hooks and melodies directly into garage band on his phone then we build from there!       B: We work with some pretty amazing guys in the industry, so our little demo writing/ producing click is amazing. Will Cruger from the band Abroad is in our corner alongside Matt and special guest instrumentalist, Ian Perez.       M: 'Take a look' is definitely the start of something special for us - we keep calling it phase 2 and we're pretty excited for the world to hear what phase 2 is going to bring!   What programs/equipment did you use?       B: My Brain, imagination, bottles of wine, a guitar and my phone.       M: We're not the biggest gear heads but we've been experimenting with some new synth sounds, some new ways of recording our beats and vocal effects for this next album. 'Take a look', for the gear heads has some pretty funky gear being used. Listen closely! You've recently signed to label 'Daily Nightly' what’s the story behind this? How has the experience been so far?       B: It’s our Managements label. We love that they look after everything. Keep it in-house. Keep the control. It’s our first release together and many more to come.        M: Annabelle, our direct at DN is a wizz. She's got us covered!   What have you found most challenging and rewarding about the creation of the album?       B: There are so many songs in my head and to keep it short, to hear people vining off whats coming out, that's the be all and end all for me! We want to being some excitement back into peoples lives! You have an Australian Tour pencilled in for October 2020 (pending COVID-19 restrictions), can you tell us where you’re heading? Or is that still a secret?       M: Ohhhhh that's tricky! Let's just say we'll be seeing all our favourites plus some new spots we've heard great things about! Your debut album 'Never Too Soon' was a global success. What do you attribute to the massive success of your debut album and what tips would you give to any upcoming artists who are wanting to break onto the scene?       M: Remember I mentioned the short straw? The kids voice is like gold.  My advice to anyone coming up through the ranks is to have the right thought process. Be ahead of the pack and plan! Plan like your music is a brand and you want people to want to be associated with it!   You've played massive shows with performances at Splendour In The Grass, Beyond The Valley & Groovin The Moo. You have also supported the likes of Kim Churchill, DMA’s, Jarryd James, Cherub and SAFIA. What do you enjoy most about playing live and how do you prepare for live shows?       B: We would play 365 days a year if we were allowed. We just want people to come to our shows and forget about all the crap going on in their life for an hour. Doesn’t matter if it’s our headline shows, festivals or we are supporting someone, we still prepare the same. We want to give people the same feeling we get when we stand in the crowd and watch our favourite bands and artists.       M: This is what we live and breathe from the second we wake up to the minute we go to sleep each night! If we're not performing, we're dreaming up idea's on how to improve or add things to our live shows etc etc. All I can say is once we're allowed back into things, the shows we play are going to be wild!   Who are you listening to at the moment?       M: Benny tries not to listen to too much music when we're in the writing process but I force as much music as I can into his head when we're in the car or chilling at home!  Jungle, Slowly Slowly, Glass Animals, Dua Lipa, Bronson, The 1975, Tyler the Creator, Coldplay, Amity Affliction, G flip etc etc. We keep it broad.       B: As I mentioned before, we know exactly what we want to put out to the world and I, personally, like my own time in my head to bring that out. But I'll admit, driving along our beautiful beaches in Newy blasting some Dua Lipa is a favourite pastime currently.   What do you like to do away from music?       B: Cooking, helping others where we can, sampling every red wine that is available, figuring out how to to prank our new management cause they got us good the other day and we need to get them back, surfing, basically anything we are allowed to do in the current times.       M: I'm getting old, man. I saw a chiropractor today. I'd love to say I'll be sinking as much piss as Benny boy but that boy can sink them like no-one else. I'll just spend my time with old John the Chiro!   What's planned for 2020?       B: At the moment.... who knows... no one knows. Hopefully we can get back to the studio, finish the record, release it and get back to what we love doing the most. Hanging out with a room full of legends every night.       M: We're pretty big planners so we've got some big things lined up for the end of the year in regards to shows and production. I'm also not meant to say this but we will have another single and possibly album 2 dropping before 2021 begins too...   Favourite food and place to hangout?       B: Uber eats and the bottle shop are making a killing out of us at the moment. We really try to support all the local businesses as well.  Newy Burger Co see's me every few nights!       M: We actually grabbed a burger on Monday night for the premiere of our new track on Triple J and sat at bar beach car park and listened in. Brought back memories as I think we both used to take a few lovers to the exact spot when we were kids. Ah, take me back!

AFTER RELEASING HEARTFELT SINGLE “RAIN.”, FUNDRAISING FOR AUSTRALIAN FIRE & DROUGHT RELIEF, SISTER DUO LIKE ANGELS RETURN WITH “TUNNEL VISION”

by the partae May 6, 2020
written by the partae

After receiving an overwhelming response to their debut single “Rain.” (with 100% of proceeds made by the song being donated to Australian bushfire & drought relief organisations), rising pop sensation Like Angels return with their next hit single “Tunnel Vision” dropping May 15th.

Naturally gifted in music from a young age & fascinated by the mystique of songwriting (as influenced by the likes of Ryan Tedder, Taylor Swift, Switchfoot & NF); Like Angels sisters Emmalisa and Sarah have developed a remarkable ability to pen meaningful, honest lyrics that connect with each listener on an emotional level.

Their debut single “Rain.”, released in Dec 2019 received notable media attention from TikTok Star Nat Alise; Australian Community Media (The Advertiser); Good Morning Macarthur and Ava’s World Magazine and was picked up by radio stations nationwide, including The Breeze FM; Macarthur’s Station C91.3FM; Hobart FM; South Australia’s 5GTR FM and several more.

“Rain.” showcased Like Angels’ ability to discuss real issues through clever lyric and melody; and now “Tunnel Vision” continues to do this – but with a fresh new sound & eye-catching optical illusion cover art.

“Tunnel Vision” explores the confusion and frustration often felt when people actively choose to avoid or ignore you: a familiar situation we have all found ourselves in at some point in our lives.

The song’s confrontational lyrics, contrasted with it’s light hearted, playful & mischievous production (including some unconventional sound samples!) encourages listeners to face uncomfortable situations, and speak up for themselves; to work towards solving problems instead of running from them.

Produced by Philippe-Marc Anquetil (Little Mix, One Direction, Jessie J, Ruel), the song’s mesmerising vocal harmonies, thought provoking lyrics and exciting three-dimensional soundscape will have you hooked from the very first note.

“Tunnel Vision” will be available on all streaming services on the 15th May 2020 as the first of several upcoming releases by Like Angels.

Where are you currently based?  I'm currently living in an attic in Redfern, Sydney. I'm originally from Bundaberg QLD, then I lived in Ireland for a few years, returned to Australia and moved to Sydney.  Your new single ILy Alley is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting for this track?  Alley, the original RACKETT bass player and BFF influenced the narrative and the sound was influenced by Gold Frapp. My friend and producer Dave Hammer has worked with RACKETT from the start of this journey, producing my first single BATS in 2017. Dave came to me with an idea for a song that's meaning was a double entendre, one being a street alley, a metaphor for choosing the path of love and the other one being about my friendship with Alley and everything we've been through as friends and band wives. The piano, melody and lyrics were the foundation for the song, then Dave worked his magic touch on production.  How did you go about writing Ily Alley? Dave started with the chorus 'mumma to a bubba, bubba to the universe, go wonder madly', from there, he created the piano part and we workshopped the verses. It was an emotional process, each time Dave would add something to it and I'd hear it, I would cry. The production on the track is so beautiful.  Where and when did you record/produce? We recorded the song as part of an eight-track collection on RKT2.0 music, recorded and produced in Sydney across several studios. I've shared Machinations, Oxytoxic and now ILY Alley from that collection and have more to share over the coming months.  How did the concept for the film clip come about? The video is a visual representation of what I see in my head when I listen to ILY Alley. All those memories come flooding back and I wanted to see if I could find physical copies of these moments. I searched everywhere, on broken hard drives, camcorder cards, Instagram, Youtube, to collect all these memories captured by me, friends and fans at shows. Once I had collected all the footage, I cut it together to reflect the way I experience it, chronologically, from when we lived together in a decrepit mansion as a band, through to the moment in the studio we found out Alley was pregnant and the arrival of baby Billy. What did you find most challenging and rewarding during the creation of the film clip? The most challenging part was feeling regret. That's hard to admit because I love my new music so much and it's not a reflection of regretting where I am now, but more regret for the friendships I've lost along the way. The most rewarding part is looking at all the insane creative concepts we brought to life from dressing up in space suits to shaving my head live on stage and all the hard work that went into constantly touring and releasing music.  Who are you listening to at the moment? Right now I'm listening to A$AP Rocky, 070 Shake, Charli XCX and Tina Turner. I like to listen to 80s ballads just to see if I can sing along and hit those high notes like Whitney Houston. At night when the city is empty, I like to climb this hill in a park near my house that overloads a driving range and the whole city and blast A$AP rocky.  What do you like to do away from music? To be honest there isn't much of my life that doesn't revolve around music, aside from sleeping and even then most of my dreams are of me talking to Miley Cyrus about music. If I'm not writing or performing myself, I'm working on a new TV show that's about music.  You're producing the new Loud n Queer TV show, please tell us more: Loud N Queer TV is aired every Friday night at 8PM on Heaps Gay Facebook. It's a digital replica of my favourite night out; live music and drag queens, with performances by artists from all around the world and guest appearances in the studio. The show is an opportunity for local Sydney artists to be captured beautifully on film by the DPLR team from Create or Die Studios and gives audiences a high-quality experience and opportunity to discover and connect with new artists. My main role in the show is producing. We've had artists like Jess B (NZ), Jackie Mendoza (USA), Lupa J (AUS), Theia (NZ) and many more on the show. Karaoke, DJ sets by Charlie Villas, Dance-offs, drag queens, skits, interviews and news by Ruby Miles. It's so much fun. You can watch all four episodes here > https://www.facebook.com/watch/heapsgayparties/1663413657143541/ What's planned for 2020? For the immediate future, I'll be continuing to produce Loud n Queer TV and making all my friends and family listen to ILY Alley. Throughout the year I'll be releasing more music I made with Dave Hammer and hopefully be back on stage before Christmas.  Favourite food and place to hangout? My favourite place to hang out is at Create or Die Studios on set filming Loud n Queer TV and my favourite food is champagne (can I say that?)
