Scott Klein Unveils “Hey Lady” — A Haunting Ode from Austin’s Southern Gothic Scene

by the partae May 26, 2025
written by the partae

In the heart of Texas, where the sun scorches the earth and stories seep from the soil, Scott Klein, a Canadian-born troubadour, emerges with his latest single, “Hey Lady.” This track is a tapestry woven with threads of Southern Gothic and Americana, painting a vivid portrait of a prairie woman’s struggle against addiction and isolation.

This new record, currently in production, brings Klein together with heavyweight collaborators: RIAA Gold-certified producer Chris “Boo” Boosahda (Shakey Graves), and Jonathan Tyler (Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights). The sessions are shaping up to be some of Klein’s most emotionally charged work to date, peeling back the layers of loss, lust, and redemption with unflinching honesty.

Following the underground success of his debut Jesse’s Hotel, this new body of work moves into darker, sharper terrain—where each track sounds like it was written in blood and recorded by candlelight. It’s not just music; it’s myth-making, forged in the spaces between dusk and despair.

KATIE BROOKE SHARES SECOND STUDIO ALBUM ‘RELENTLESS’ + FORTHCOMING SHOW DATES

by the partae May 22, 2025
written by the partae

After three years of grit, growth, and deep soul-searching, Katie Brooke unveils her second studio album Relentless – a project that captures her most defining years as a songwriter, a mother, and a woman walking unapologetically in her own boots.

Written entirely by Katie and produced with long-time collaborator Rusty Crook in Tamworth, Relentless blends classic country roots with raw, reflective storytelling. It’s a natural progression from her 2022 debut Sticks, Stones and Stories, but this time, the stories hit even harder.

“I started writing this album three years ago, around the same time I became a mother and my life shifted to a whole new realm,” Katie shares. “In that time, I became the artist I’ve always hoped to be. My songwriting got more honest, more traditional, more me. It’s the most true I’ve ever felt.”

That truth echoes through every track. There’s a maturity to this record – not just in vocal delivery or production, but in the songwriting itself. Each track feels like a journal entry cracked open for the listener.

At the heart of the album lies its bold title track, ‘Relentless’ – written in a storm of frustration and self-reflection. It’s a sonic statement of defiance, channelling burnout into clarity. That same undercurrent of resilience threads its way through ‘Too Far Down’ – a previous single that cracked the CountryTown Hot 50 airplay chart in 2023 – and ‘Ain’t No 9 to 5’, a foot-stomping salute to the work ethic and passion Katie inherited from her family – celebrating sweat, legacy, and the kind of drive that doesn’t clock off when the day ends.

The album also leans into vulnerability with unflinching honesty. ‘A Little Dirt’, which hit #2 on both the Play MPE Country Most Downloaded and Most Streamed charts, is Katie at her most confessional – a bright, melodic reflection on regret and growth. ‘Someone’s Enemy’, explores the slow unravel of friendship, while ‘Higher Ground’ serves as a moving tribute to her hometown and the 2022 Northern Rivers floods that reshaped it forever.

There’s also room for heart in its most nurturing form. ‘You Can Always Come Home’ was written for Katie’s daughter Faith – a love letter to unconditional love and belonging. On the flip side of tenderness is ‘Can’t Fake That’, a whip-smart, playful tribute to country women living the life for real – not for image. With a wink to cowgirl culture and an undeniable swagger, it’s a refreshing burst of confidence and camaraderie.

The cinematic, ‘Haunted or Holy’ is the kind of track that unfolds differently on every listen, while ‘Secondhand Spurs’ is a nostalgic ride through Katie’s early 20s in Tamworth, where dreams, heartbreak, and horse riding collided. “If my 20s had a theme song, this one is it,” she laughs.

The sound of Relentless is unmistakably Katie – timeless, authentic, and beautifully lived-in. Featuring world-class musicians like Jason Roller (Alabama, Grand Ole Opry Band), Rusty Crook, and Bradley Bergen, the album was recorded slowly and intentionally, with Katie traveling five hours each way from her rural NSW home to Tamworth. “That drive became its own ritual,” she recalls. “A time to reflect, dream, and shape this album into something that feels worn in and well loved.”

Raised on a beef cattle property and now raising her own family in the same Northern NSW pocket, Katie has never chased a trend. Her whip-smart lyrics, salt-of-the-earth vocals, and no-nonsense charm have earned her a loyal following. Alongside accolades like winning the Listen Up Music Songwriting Prize (Gold Coast Semi-Final) and sitting on its national judging panel, she’s opened for the likes of The Black Sorrows, Brooke McClymont & Adam Eckersley and Shannon Noll.

Her Relentless album tour will take Katie and her full band across regional and metro Australia – a long-awaited step up for the country artist who’s previously toured solo or acoustically.

Whether she’s riding horseback with a guitar, writing songs while the baby naps, or cracking whips (just like her dad did when he opened the Sydney 2000 Olympics) – Katie Brooke is as real as they come. Relentless effortlessly channels that authenticity and marks a turning point, not just in her career, but in her own story.

“I experienced a major flood, became a first-time mum, faced some tough failures – and still kept pushing forward. This album is about that journey. It’s about becoming.”

It’s not just the sound of a country artist finding her feet – it’s the sound of one finally riding full tilt into who she’s always been.

Fritz Kalkbrenner Unveils a Refined Evolution with ‘Can We Find A Way’

by the partae May 22, 2025
written by the partae

Fritz Kalkbrenner opens a new chapter in his unmistakable sonic journey with Can We Find A Way — a warm, emotionally charged house track that fuses soulful depth with irresistible dancefloor momentum. Anchored by a rolling groove and shaped by Fritz’s instantly recognisable vocal tone, the track unfolds like a moment suspended in time. It’s introspective yet propulsive, melancholic yet quietly hopeful. A haunting female vocal floats through the arrangement, adding fragility and tension that heighten the emotional impact.

This is late-night music with a beating heart, equally at home in peak-time club sets and during solitary city strolls. A sound that embraces the stillness of night while reaching for light, Can We Find A Way radiates a refined and deeply human energy that lingers long after the final note.

Following the success of his previous single, this release signals the next step in Fritz Kalkbrenner’s evolving artistic vision. It is a sound that is contemporary and elegant while remaining deeply personal and unmistakably his. A hypnotic remix by Ede, known for his releases on Innervisions, will follow at the end of May and promises a deeper, late-night club interpretation.

Having shaped a generation with Sky and Sand and earned multiple Gold and Platinum awards for his albums and singles, Fritz Kalkbrenner once again proves his unique ability to move both bodies and hearts with timeless style and emotional precision.

Interview: Katie Brooke – Rooted, Resilient, and Relentless

by the partae May 20, 2025
written by the partae

Congratulations on the release of “Relentless”! What does this song mean to you personally, and why did you choose it as the title track for the album?

Thank you! This song is a reminder of my resilience, persistence and ability to overcome. I was facing a particularly challenging time in my career when I wrote this and it gifted me renewed hope and faith in things to come. I had already finished writing all the songs for the album but serendipitously I was heading back to the studio that week to work on final vocals and told my producer that this song had to be part of the record and alas it made such an impact that it became the title track!

The video for “Relentless” was filmed on your property and features your horse, Cash. How important is your connection to the land and animals in shaping your music and storytelling?

It’s extremely important, especially being a rural based artist and born and raised on the land. It’s who I am and the only environment I truly know, it inspires me endlessly. Sometimes it’s not in an obvious way, yet even just writing all my songs from here allows the music to carry the energy of this beautiful place. I believe where you create from does have an impact on the art.

This is your second studio album, produced by Rusty Crook. How did the collaboration come about, and what was different about the process this time around?

Rusty and I have been working together from the very beginning of my recording career and he knows my music so well I couldn’t imagine recording with anyone else. He almost instantly knows which direction to go as soon as he hears the song and always brings out the best in my work. The first album was recorded over a few days at the studio and I’m still so proud of that body of work, however the growth and progress demonstrated in my new album is evidence that I’ve settled into my sound and style. This album was a slow and intentional unfolding. I’d drive down to Tamworth every few weeks and we’d only focus on a couple of tracks at a time. I think it allowed the songs to be really worn in and the process to unfold organically. That was important for this project and where I’m at as an artist.

You’ve described each track in the album’s track-by-track guide. Was there a song that was particularly challenging—or cathartic—to write or record?

The most challenging was probably ‘Can’t Fake That’, I rewrote that one a couple of times and it didn’t spill out as effortlessly as some of the others, but the end result was worth it. It was really good for me to practice editing and rewriting as in the past I’ve often left it sit too long and lost interest. Higher Ground, Someone’s Enemy and Relentless were all really sore points to write about, as I stated above, Relentless was a result of career challenges. Higher Ground was a song I wrote after facing the 2022 Northern Rivers floods and having to be rescued by a boat and watch a town I love destroyed by the biggest natural disaster we’ve seen in our lifetime. Someone’s Enemy was just me trying to process my feelings around a broken down friendship but it ended up so cathartic and healing and the feedback on that song has been really incredible, I’m glad it’s out there now for anyone who may be needing it the way I did when I wrote it.

You’ve been through some incredibly difficult times, including being rescued by boat during the 2022 Northern Rivers flood while pregnant. How did that experience influence your songwriting on this album, if at all?

As stated above, Higher Ground was the track dedicated to this experience. Honestly it took me a while to even start talking about it, let alone write about it. But 11 months later I was ready to put pen to paper and I had the song written quite quickly, but then singing it without crying was the next battle, but I’ve overcome that now.

Country music often thrives on real-life stories. Do you find writing about personal hardships healing, or is it more about connecting with listeners who’ve walked a similar road?

It’s a dance of both. I do really write for therapy and to process certain experiences, but I always have the intention and hope that my music finds the people who need it. There are songs that have really pulled me from the depths, I want to be able to create that music for people to lean on and maybe take the edge off certain challenges in life. Impactful music is always my goal.

You’ve got a run of upcoming shows across NSW and QLD. How do you prepare for performing live, and do you have a favourite venue or town you’re especially excited to return to?

We’ve been rehearsing for this since last year and I’ve been testing set lists out at local shows and really ticking all the boxes to create a great show for the audience. It’s been great to grow more in the area of live performance, work consistently with a band and really nurture that craft. This tour has a great variety of venues but my favourite so far was returning to do my home town show at Mummulgum Hall last Saturday night. I was expecting some friends and family to come out for it, but we actually ended up selling out and having to quickly arrange 12 extra tables for the massive crowd that seemed to just arrive out of nowhere. It was surreal and a huge confidence boost.

Your music blends traditional country with heartfelt lyrics. Who are some of your musical influences, and how have they helped shape your sound?

Alison Krauss, Kasey Chambers, Joy Williams, and a lot of 90’s country music artists. There’s no denying the evidence of that influence in my music, but it’s been nice to tap into my own unique style.

What’s something about Relentless—the album—that you hope listeners really notice or take away after hearing it?

I really hope they’re able to find themselves in it, relate or connect to the concepts and stories. I hope it has the same cathartic and impactful effect for the listener as it has for me, the writer.

Looking ahead, where do you see your music heading after this release? Are there themes or stories you’re already exploring for future work?

I’d love to keep the momentum flowing on performing live shows and working with my band. I’d really love the opportunity to play more festivals and connect with country music lovers just like me. I’m really excited because I have been collecting bits and pieces and ideas for new songs and that really excites me. I’m looking forward to focusing on more writing throughout this season.

Interview: Civic – Finding Peace in New Sounds

by the partae May 16, 2025
written by the partae

You’ve said this track reflects “finding peace in being out of your depth”—how does that mindset tie into the broader themes on Chrome Dipped?

Throughout the record there is an over arching theme of a “New world”. In some aspects it is good and in some it is bad, and ultimately you will find a calm.

Sonically, “The Hogg” is filthy and ferocious, but the lyrics are almost poetic—how conscious are you of striking that contrast?

Thats basically the whole idea behind the album is this stark contrast between hard and soft, Chrome being solid but also soft and liquid. Its like steel wool, the toughest material that’s also soft.

What pushed you to move away from the raw punk roots into more experimental territory on this record? Was it scary to let go of those “rules”?

We were open for change, we were excited for it. The album is still punk, it’s just not typical to how you would think our record might sound. And I’m ok with that.

Kirin J. Callinan as producer and recording at MONA—it’s a big shift from your usual DIY process. How did that environment and team shape the album?

Kirin J produced the record and Chris Townend recorded it. I had met Kirin a few years back at a DIY space in Newcastle where we played under a basketball ring. He was wearing pikachu jeans and cowboy boots with spurs. Fast forward 3 years we were throwing some names around for people to produce the new album and Kirins name came up and we all thought, “well that would be interesting” So we did. It was his idea to go down to MONA to the frying pan studios with Chris. What an amazing space, and hidden gem. I still can’t believe we

You recently toured with Sex Pistols in Australia—how did that experience feed into the energy or mindset behind Chrome Dipped?

You can’t rely deny a call up like that, you have to go along with it, embrace it. Which we did. It was fantastic, special, and comical in a way. I don’t think it really had any correlation to the record or where we are at, we were just happy to be sharing a stage with some legends of it all.

You’ve mentioned wanting listeners to feel “confused, angry, then good”—what’s the value in creating that kind of emotional whiplash in music today?

A lot of bands like to hand feed their audience with easy to digest-able music at the moment. I think its important to challenge and question this in contemporary music.

The album seems to wrestle with the role of machines and modern consciousness—was that an intentional commentary or something that emerged naturally?

I wouldn’t say the whole album is a comment on the modern machine, but there is elements of that notion in the song Chrome dipped itself. I was thinking a lot about theever changing or growth of humans trying to attain this perfect machine. The build of the machine that can act or be like a human. Its kind of a strange concept really.

Tell us about the behind-the-scenes documentary. Was it strange having someone film such personal, creative moments, or did it add to the process?

Its nice to have people around you, sometimes they can get in your way and sometimes it can help you. Either way, we were grateful to have it filmed in such an interesting and artistic way. James Gorter is a fantastic director and I can’t wait to see what he comes up with himself.

Chasing Ghosts ‘Therapy’ Album Review

by the partae May 16, 2025
written by the partae

Review: Arlo Enemark

Australian Punk Music has always been working class. You don’t need me to prosecute the argument that punk started here but I will remind the reader that unlike the New York bourgeoisie, to Australians, punk is more of an ethos and a social movement than it is an aesthetic. Likewise, the new album from Chasing Ghosts; Therapy is far more than explorative genre-piece or an exercise in style. It’s a brutal reminder of the work we have ahead of us. The challenges that face our demographic and an earnest request to not just recognise what needs to be done but to fucking do it.

You can instantly hear the band’s post hardcore pedigree in the opening cut Burn The Boats, with the gliding guitars and soaring choruses dropping into chunky micro breakdowns. It sets the tone for an audience with a high expectation of punk music. Far from the dinky power chords and frivolous lyrics of 90s skate punk, front man Jimmy Kyle goes deep early with lyrics about simultaneous mourning and rebuilding, about having the courage to cut your losses even though you’ve lost everything. Meanwhile the band blasts through intricate structure and rhythm changes, vital riffs and group vocals that express a solidarity sorely missed in our loneliest moments.

The foot stomping energy of Amnesia Everybody languishes the gaping hole in Australian history when it comes to the frontier wars and the realities of the ongoing British occupation. The way our mainstream narrative jealously guards myths of European civility, justice and how most of us would prefer to distance ourselves from blame, rather than acknowledge the ongoing consequences.

My Bingayi asks men to intervene, in the way that women and children have been for decades. A compassionate call for brothers to support each other in healing patterns of abuse. The emotive string arrangement, by the band’s pianist/multi-instrumentalists Chris O’Neill, lifts this earnest anthem to celestial heights as the uncomfortable theme obliges the listener to reflect on their behaviour and that of their peers.

The Hurting Years is a shamefully relatable ballad around the leading cause of death of young men in Australia. The song mourns, reflects and embraces, without judgement but ultimately makes the very literal call: “I implore you to tell your friends that you love them, I implore you to tell your friends that you care and don’t believe everything that you hear.” Once again the group vocals symbolise a desperately needed kinship while the small touches in the outro leave the humming after taste of oxytocin.

The most recent single Flowers continues the appeal for emotion transparency amongst friends. Asking us to dig deeper when someone is putting on a brave face. IWPTEK (feat. Emmy Hour) is a bare knuckle brawl, in defense of our loved ones. a well timed show of strength in an emotionally difficult part of the album.

Ten tracks of pristinely engineered and performed punk rock… Therapy is a mighty expression. Imagine the blistering vibrance of Gyroscope, the contagious nostalgia of The Smith Street Band with the social conscience of Midnight Oil and you might get close to understanding Chasing Ghosts. Energetic, confronting and self aware, Therapy doesn’t simply prove a point, it demands conversation.

Von Sharp Releases ‘More’

by the partae May 16, 2025
written by the partae

Von Sharp, a Brisbane-based producer with a knack for crafting compelling club sounds, is back with a solid Tech House cut titled More. Having carved out a niche by merging the energy of classic rave with a modern production aesthetic, Von Sharp’s latest instrumental delivers precisely what it promises: a no-nonsense club track engineered for the dance floor.

More kicks off with a steadily rolling house beat, establishing an immediate sense of forward momentum. Layered over this foundation are expansive synth textures and cheeky sample cuts, creating an atmosphere that feels both spacious and purposeful. There’s a confident swagger to this instrumental, a directness in its harmonic language and an undeniable weight in its low frequencies that speaks to its dancefloor intentions.

The production unfolds with a subtle yet effective dynamism. Sonic elements drift and intertwine, guiding the listener through a sonic terrain that prioritizes groove and movement. The slightly off-kilter beat adds a layer of rhythmic intrigue, locking into a groove that’s both infectious and insistent. More isn’t about unnecessary frills; it’s about delivering a potent and effective club moment. For DJs seeking a reliable track to inject energy into their sets and for club-goers craving that immersive, heads-down vibe, Von Sharp’s More, is an easy choice. Dropping on all platforms today (16th of May).

Singer songwriter Matt Maltese today releases his sixth studio album Hers via The Orchard. Hers arrives as Maltese’s most insular and intimate project to date, and his first fully self-produced effort since his second album Krystal.

Maltese has long drawn from the tried and tested artistic wellspring of romance and heartbreak, but the songs that make up Hers find him reflecting upon a serious long-term relationship and the more grown-up complexities of love through the rearview, with the quiet artfulness for which he has become so beloved. Hers exists in a twilight world, pairing heartfelt songwriting and dry witticism with the gentle quiver of strings, a flourish of woodwind or the sound of a creaking old piano.

“I’ve written a lot of music that comes from a place of infatuation, but this record was written on reflection of a much longer-term love. The complications and wonderful roads that that goes through and the more informed heartaches that come out of it. I got to really reflect and slave over it… It’s a bit like having a year to write a really important email,” he says.

“I’m British enough to feel a slight shame of writing so many love songs in the past,” he adds. “Maybe the more interesting thing on paper would have been to go to the other side of the world and write a concept album about prehistoric creatures or something, but at the end of the day, we’re all human, and love and people are things we’re all continually affected by. It’s my job as a songwriter to excavate the things in my life, and that’s what I was going through.”  MATT MALTESE

Today he also highlights the record’s latest single ‘Happy Birthday’, a mediation on all the feelings that can be held in such a simple exchange between two people. Maltese explains: “I grew up when writing ‘happy birthday’ 108 times a year peoples Facebook pages without any punctuation was socially acceptable behaviour, and I’ve always thought how interesting it is looking back.. such a plain message but always so much unsaid between senders and recipients in those two words. The socially conventional shell for a million other feelings. And I think in break ups, the ‘happy birthday’ text is the last thing to go. Sometimes it goes on years longer than anything else, and that’s fascinating, I think. Reflecting on this, it started to really interest me to get that into a song. A light title, but all the anguish underneath the surface. Maybe someday, people all over the world will joyfully chant ‘I’d break my legs in half..’ when the cake comes out. Or not.”

This week Matt embarks on a tour of intimate record store in-store shows in support of Hers, with events taking place in London, Liverpool, Nottingham, Oxford and Brighton over the coming week. Later this year Maltese embarks on his Tour For You My Whole Life run, playing the biggest venues of his career across North America, UK and Europe from September through to December. The 46-date tour commences in Nashville, stopping by major venues including Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre and London’s Roundhouse, before concluding his European run in Barcelona in mid-December. Full list of dates below, tickets are on sale now and available via matt-maltese.com.

Having first established himself as a songwriter with a knack for dry one-liners and a keen eye for self-deprecation, Maltese released debut album Bad Contestant back in 2018. The three albums that followed over the next five years cemented his position as one of the UK’s finest young songwriters. Critics were unanimous; Matt Maltese’s piano harmonies, playful approach and quintessentially British wit saw ‘the mundane transformed into fantasy’.

Since the release of 2023’s Driving Just To Drive, Maltese has been busy in multiple behind the scenes roles, lending his songwriting abilities to a number of fellow artists, and establishing indie label Last Recordings On Earth. Taking a slightly different approach to his own craft, last year saw Matt share covers album Songs That Aren’t Mine, a collection of some of his favourite songs, recorded at home with guest features by friends including Dora Jar and Liana Flores. Elsewhere, he made his theatre songwriting debut, composing all original music and lyrics for The Royal Shakespeare Company’s winter production of Twelfth Night, described by The Observer as “inspired… perfectly balances Shakespeare’s dramatic polarities”.

Late 2024 also saw Maltese embark on a headline tour of Asia, Australia and New Zealand, following live runs through the US, Europe and the UK, including his biggest show to date at the Wiltern, Los Angeles, and a sold-out show at London’s Brixton Electric. His global appeal as an artist is undeniable, with sold-out shows from Sydney to Sao Paolo, and Jakarta to Tokyo to his name.

DJ Sammy, Loona and Empyre One revive the 1996 classic: You’re My Angel

by the partae May 15, 2025
written by the partae

“You’re My Angel” was one of DJ Sammy’s very first hits. Originally released in 1996 together with Loona – who at the time performed under the alias Carisma – the dance anthem became an early milestone in his career. Now, nearly three decades later, the song gets a powerful new interpretation. German dance producer Empyre One joins forces with DJ Sammy and Loona to deliver an explosive update full of raw energy and peak-time dancefloor vibes.

DJ Sammy, one of Spain’s most successful producers and DJs with over 20 million records sold, has teamed up with Empyre One and Loona for this high-energy collaboration. The result: a driving dance track filled with powerful beats and carried by the iconic vocals of the Latin pop queen herself.

DJ Sammy is considered one of the most recognized names in electronic music worldwide. With over 20 million records sold and countless awards, he has cemented his status as a global dance music icon. His international breakthrough came in 2001 with the massive hit “Heaven,” which sold more than two million copies across Europe and Australia, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. and reaching No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in 2002. His follow-up single, “The Boys of Summer,” also climbed to No. 2 in the UK. In addition to his chart success, DJ Sammy earned widespread acclaim for his DJ performances, landing in the DJ Mag Top 100 (No. 92 in 2005, No. 61 in 2006).

Loona, born Marie Jose van der Kolk in the Netherlands, rose to fame in 1996 alongside DJ Sammy with singles like “Life Is Just a Game” and “You Are My Angel.” Her solo breakthrough came in 1998 with the summer smash “Bailando” and the chart-topping “Hijo de la Luna.” Tracks like “Mamboleo” (1999) and “Vamos a la Playa” (2010) earned her global recognition and several Gold and Platinum awards. To mark her 25th anniversary in the music industry, Loona released several new singles, including “Dreams (Are My Reality)” and collaborated with Jerome & DJ Sammy on a remake of Bailando. Her most recent success: “VAMOS” with FiNCH, which proved to be a major hit.

Empyre One, aka Christian Beneken, took his first steps into the dance scene in 2004. His big breakthrough came in 2007 when DJ Gollum discovered him for the Global Airbeatz label. With hits like “Moonlight Shadow” and “Dangerous,”he established himself as a staple of the hands-up scene and performed at major festivals such as Airbeat One. Empyre One has collaborated with acts like DJ Manian and Brooklyn Bounce, producing successful remixes and original tracks. Since 2015, he has been a key figure in the electro-house movement, remaining highly relevant with releases such as “Mirrors” and “The Bad Touch,” while continuing to inspire fans around the globe.

Montell Fish – Melbourne / Sydney 2025

by the partae May 14, 2025
written by the partae

Photography: Hieu Nguyen – Words: Ken Magno

My first memory of Montell Fish was the same way I discover most artists that have become quite constant staples in my recent most-played lists. A chance encounter with a song that comes on in my recommended tracks, just to scroll back through hours of music and find that one specific song that stuck in my head. The song of question? “Fall in Love with You.” A song with a simple yet powerful message that seemed to strike a chord during the late hours of the night. That song would go on to become a mainstay in my daily rotation, during late night dnm’s over the phone, long drives up and down the highway and during any time my friends and I would go band for band in what our ultimate ‘yearning’ track is.

Jump forward a couple years, on a cold and windy night in May, and Montell Fish was set to play the final few of his internationally sold out “the Dream Deer Tour”, following the release of his 2024 album “Charlotte”. Driving into the venue, the sun was setting over an overcast Sydney as the dimly lit lights of the Enmore Theatre battled with the violent blues and greys of the sunset; a night that matched the energy of the enigmatic singer perfectly. Setting the scene for Fish was DJ / producer Exxy, a young up and coming artist who set a scene of intimacy rather than the usual upbeats of most opening acts at shows. His set complimented Fish’s music perfectly, a feeling of ambience in his sound that most would recognise as the feeling of listening in on the party music playing through the walls of the bathroom you’ve found yourself in – a melancholic feeling of euphoria as you sit back and rethink the decisions that led you to the moment you’ve found yourself in.

As Montell made his highly anticipated entrance, his silhouette was only highlighted by a mix of strobe lighting and a dimly lit back curtain, adding to the mystery and complexity of his character. Flashes of lights and quick glimpses of the Pittsburgh-based singer-songwriter, the pain and anguish in his voice and words hitting at the heart as if they’re lingering memories of past mistakes that you can’t quite let go of. Montell Fish had created a haunting scene over the historic venue, something more reminiscent of a painting from the romantic period filled with emotion and longing, his words being his paintbrush that carefully curates the artwork of emotion that was on display at his show.

Songs like “Every Night” and “Same Sh*t” had lit a fire in the audience, the chorus of the Every Night feeling more like a hypnotic chant as the audience relentlessly screamed “The drugs, the sex the lights / I think I want it all, like every night” with the heavy drums and distorted guitar adding a layer of harshness that contrasts his usual soft, alternative-pop style.

Though throughout the set, Montell’s duality behind his songwriting really shone as he led the crowd through a more personal story. Taking a trip back to his early release of “Jamie”, Fish walked us through a story that may seem like another soft RNB ballad about the hopelessness of falling in love with someone just out of your reach, though actually paints a story of a man struggling with is relationship with God. Montell’s early days having freshly moved to New York as a young artist looking to find community while trying to uphold his Christian roots sparkled through a beautiful play through of his hit song “Talk2Me”, his guitar acting as an extension of his voice rather than an accompaniment.

After dancing around the keys of his piano to “What ‘s it Take to be a Star”, Montell Fish made his goodbye’s by playing his infamous ballad “Fall in Love with You.” (giving the younger me chills) before bowing out to a thunderous rendition of “Hotel” and “Bathroom” back-to-back, adding a heavily distorted guitar solo to the end of “Hotel” that seemed to transcend the space between the audience and the artist and elevate the night to a whole other level.

Montell Fish creates music for the dreamers, for the lost, for the lovers – he creates music that is real and relatable, leaving a piece of his heart on the stage with every soul piercing note, creating a show that was nothing short of a night to remember for decades. The Dream Deer Tour ends with the final show of the international tour at the Enmore Theatre on Wednesday the 14th of March, followed by an afterparty at the Lansdowne Hotel in Sydney hosted by Montell Fish’s alter ego DJ Gummy Bear.

The Grogans release new single ‘Social Cue’ ahead of upcoming LP Stagger+ live video at Sing Sing Studios + upcoming WA + US Shows

by the partae May 12, 2025
written by the partae

Unveiling a new rock n roll number, The Grogans are releasing ‘Social Cue’, the latest single from their forthcoming LP Stagger, out Friday 23 May. Capturing their live energy that their fans love best, the single is joined by a live video recorded at Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne. After returning from a 16-date US headline tour, the trio are making a quick stopover in WA for shows in Margaret River and Esperance as they gear up to release their fifth and favourite album later this month and a return to the US this June.

Out Thursday 8 May, ‘Social Cue’ is packed with heavy guitars and drums, reminiscent of an early Grogans sound that fans first fell in love with. The track embodies the story of feeling disrespected and all the frustration that comes with it. “Dig in and turn it up to eleven” – The Grogans.

PLAY/LISTEN

Exploring another side of The Grogans’ music, Stagger is a patchwork of different sounds and sonic inspirations that all come together in the one album, “it came from this idea that it was a jagged and stylistically different album track to track“, explain The Grogans. Capturing the magnetic energy of their live shows, the album also touches on themes of mental health, taking care of yourself and your loved ones, the occasional love song, and more. As the catchy chorus first single and album opener ‘Oh Boy’ leads into sonic powerhouse of a tune ‘Come Up (Goes Down)’, ‘In My Heart’ slows it down to a new easy listening direction, followed by ‘Have a Little Dream’ – as dreamy as the title suggests – and the big open echoed instrumentation of ‘Once In A While’. Adding new textural effects in ‘Roll Back’ and last single ‘Roundabout’, ‘Happier Man’ dips into a heavier psych realm with a reminder that “striving to be a better and happier person should be a goal for everyone.” ‘Worry About Everything’ is an upbeat tune sure to have you worrying about nothing, and feel good album closer ‘All My Days’ ends on a more serious note that outlines the beauty and the beast of live music and the personal struggles that come with the lifestyle and touring.

Included in Rolling Stone’s Future of Music 2025 and described by triple j as ‘one of the most consistently hardworking live acts in the country’, The Grogans commitment to making incredibly varied, distinct music, sharing good experiences at their live show and genuine elation on playing together is clear to see and explains why they are one of Australia’s brightest bands. In recent years, they have delighted their international fans with a headline 2024 tour across Europe, Ireland, and the UK, a stop at the Netherlands’ Misty Fields Festival, joining Ocean Alley on their US Summer Tour, and more. Never ones for slowing down, 2024 was filled with local shows, sharing the stage with Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers for their ‘Fix It With Salt’ tour, and a 5th anniversary tour of their LP ‘Just What You Want. ’

Filled with catchy chorus’ for fans to sing along to, get ready for the new 11 track LP from The Grogans.
