NEW SINGLE + MUSIC VIDEO ‘EVERYWHERE YOU’RE NOT’ Feat. DANTE KNOWS + SINGLE LAUNCH SOLD OUT SECOND SHOW ADDED

DIY Australian indie-pop artist RACKETT drops new electronic single ‘Everywhere You’re Not’ featuring NY rapper Dante Knows, co-written, produced and mixed by Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale, Mia Rodriguez), and mastered by Andrew Edgeston (Amy Shark, Tia Gostelow).

Beat driven and bass-heavy, the single punches into a huge dance drop out of a euphoric, stripped back chorus. Featuring 16 bars of rap by NY born, SYD based rapper, Dante Knows, the single is another reveal of what RACKETT fans can expect from her debut mini-album due for release in late November 2020.

“‘Everywhere You’re Not’ is about freedom and liberation from an ex-lover. It’s a realisation that the world is a big place full opportunities and the awakening of possibilities from the limitations of staying in one place, with one person. As a massive Dante Knows fan I was thrilled to have him on the single, I saw him perform in Sydney in late 2019 and have been following his music ever since. I think he’s one of the most talented artists I’ve discovered and as the first feature I’ve ever released, it’s a big moment for me” – RACKETT

For the music video RACKETT teamed up with up and coming Sydney director, Murli. Shot at Archie’s Brother Arcade and Tokyo Sing Song in Sydney, the music video was inspired by ASAP Rocky’s L$D. Styled and with creative direction by RACKETT,  the Sydney artist once again flexes her DIY approach and produces an acid-washed, neon popping feast for the eyes.

RACKETT’s single launch presented by BLOOM SOLD OUT with a second show just announced.

PLANTS AND ANIMALS Share new single ‘Le Queens’ New album The Jungle out October 23

by the partae September 3, 2020
written by the partae

Today, Plants and Animals are releasing a brand new single and video for ‘Le Queens’. A French song featuring Adèle Trottier-Rivard on vocals, the theme was inspired by an evening spent in Queens, NY. The new song and video are premiering this morning via Consequence of Sound, alongside an Origins feature about the track, click here to read. The Jungle, their fifth studio album, is set to be released October 23rd via Secret City Records / Remote Control.

The band shares the inspiration behind the song: “Woody got this machine that makes a drum kit play samples and he didn’t know how to use it. But he chopped up some of Warren’s guitar chords and played them with his bass drum anyway. So it all ended up as this wobbly, dreamy jam that we all got attached to. Nic wrote most of the lyrics in the lineup at Home Depot. They’re about an evening in Queens, dancing among strangers, time moving backwards in slow motion and falling in love.”

The music video, directed by Yann-Manuel Hernandez, features Quebec’s acclaimed singer-songwriter Michel Rivard. The director shares the creative process and context of this unexpected moment: “Le Queens is a tribute to the Quebec cinema of the 60s and 70s, to the Nouvelle Vague, to Groulx, to Quebec waking up, to the love that persists in spite of everything, to life’s free spirit and its craziness. The band got totally on board and we even managed to create a little show in an alleyway in Montreal to capture documentary moments of life. This atypical side is also reflected in the idea of adding an outro to the music video with Michel Rivard, founder of Beau Dommage, who re-enacts an emblematic scene from the Nouvelle Vague: Rivard plays Devos, Spicer plays Belmondo.”

The Jungle starts with electronic drums that sound like insects at night. A whole universe comes alive in the dark. It’s beautiful, complex and unsettling. Systematic and chaotic. All instinct, no plan. Voices taunt, “yeah, yeah, yeah”. This tangled time in which we find ourselves is reflected back in shadows.

Every song is such a landscape. The first one grinds to a halt and you become a kid looking out a car window at the moon, wondering how it’s still on your tail as you speed past a steady blur of trees. You watch a house go up in a yellow strobe that echoes the disco weirdness of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and David Bowie. You get pummeled by a rhythm then set free by a sudden change of scenery—the wind stops, clarity returns. You’re under a streetlight in Queens, soft focus, slow motion, falling in love. You speak French now too, in case you didn’t already. Bienvenue.

These are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. There’s one song Nic sings to his teenage son who was dealing with climate change anxiety and drifting into uncharted independence. The band carries it out slowly together into a sweet blue horizon. Warren wrote the words to another shortly after losing his father. It’s about the things we inherit not necessarily being the things we want. In a broader sense, that’s where a lot of people find themselves right now.

Plants and Animals are an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue. The band has developed a varied cult following ever since, built on the shoulders of their self-produced records and their intense live shows. Parc Avenue was a critically acclaimed record (Pitchfork 8/10) released during the famous Montreal-is-the-new-Seattle music moment. This release set Plants and Animals as an incredible live force, a powerful songwriting trio and opened doors for them to tour the world many times over with people like Portugal. The Man, Gnarls Barkley and more. Three other releases followed and kept the band’s status up high: La La Land (2010) “they’re complicated and gorgeous [songs] and feel as innate as desire itself.” (Paste Magazine), The End of That (2012) “vibrant, constantly rewarding” (Spin) and Waltzed in from the Rumbling (2016) “… the strike rate is remarkably high” ★★★★ (Q Magazine). The band was shortlisted (2008) and longlisted (2010) for the Polaris Music Prize and received multiple Juno Awards and ADISQ Awards nominations over the years.

Your Girl Pho releases new single ‘Surrender’ + music video

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

“Your Girl Pho has her own thing going on and it’s a damn good thing if you ask me” – Declan Byrne, triple j

“Welcome Your Girl Pho as she joins the upper echelon of Western Australian talent, and commences her journey to becoming a fully-fledged national name” – Pilerats

“An extremely impressive cross-genre offering that will leave you gobsmacked” – Acid Stag

“Your Girl Pho’s impressive vocal skills and captivating energy make for an entertaining track and should lead to unforgettable live performances” – EARMILK

Perth based artist Your Girl Pho releases ‘Surrender’ – her first single since signing with Melbourne tastemaker label Daily Nightly. Its accompanying music video has also been released today.

Switching it up from her signature electro-pop energy, ‘Surrender’ shows a softer side of Your Girl Pho, stripping her sound down to a lo-fi, neo-soul setting with an infusion of 90s hip-hop.

“This is an ode for the people who let love go and who won’t surrender to another. I’m singing to a person who has had their walls up, and holds a strong front – having a past of not letting anyone in,” says Phoebe on the track.

However laxed the vibes on Surrender, Pho’s signature sass and contemporary approach to lyricism isn’t wasted. Beginning a verse with ‘so….um’, a common phrase she uses in her songwriting that snaps her back to reality and lets the listener know she’s about to speak her truth.

Your Girl Pho has a ‘je ne sais quoi’ and a contagious vibrancy that is exactly what we all need in 2020.

BIO

Your Girl Pho is the vivacious on stage persona of Perth based vocalist/producer Phoebe Gunson. In a short time she racked up a slew of coveted support slots with the likes of Post Malone, The Avalanches, E^ST, Kllo, Alice Ivy & spots on acclaimed festivals Groovin’ The Moo, Falls Festival, Laneway, Listen Out, FOMO, Festival Vaiven (Mexico), Music Matters (Singapore), & in 2019 performed her first North American shows when she appeared on the prestigious Canadian Music Week lineup.

Pho is known for her big vocal range, high energy and live looping during shows. A dynamic young artist that bounces with ease across genres, ranging from somber, nostalgic R&B to bright, colourful electro-pop that will have you dancing in your seat. The power, sass and closeness of Pho’s voice is bigger than the limitations of genre, and in 2019 Acid Stag acknowledged her ability to experiment with her sound, referring to her single ‘Don’t Wanna’ as an “extremely impressive cross-genre offering that will leave you gobsmacked.” The crown jewel in her fizzing, elasticated blend of genres, Pho’s “soulful vocals” (NYLON) have enjoyed airplay with triple j, Beats 1, FBi Radio, RTRFM, 4ZZZ and more – via her own work as well as collaborations with electronic producers Palais, Tayrell and Ukiyo.

Often backed by her 4-piece band, consisting of drums & two saxophones, Pho’s warm, dynamic vocals and playful attitude certainly command the room. Acknowledgement of her enthralling live show was received in 2019 when she won the West Australian Music award for ‘Best Live Electronic Act’. Following on from a huge year in 2019 which included acclaimed releases ‘Five-Thirty PM’ and ‘Don’t Wanna’, which sat at #1 in the AMRAP metro download charts Nationally, it’s no surprise she was snapped up by Untitled Group’s tastemaker label Daily Nightly in June of 2020. The tail end of this year sees Pho pen new music & perform shows in her home state of Western Australia.

Gadigal/Sydney based group GAUCI today share their new single ‘Heartbeat’. Premiered via Home and Hosed on triple j, the trio also announce the release of their anticipated self-titled debut EP, out this October 16. Listen to ‘Heartbeat’ HERE.

Patiently working hard over the last twelve months honing their craft, GAUCI return with their most confident release to date. Where ‘To Save A Moment’ reflects on desperation and second chances, ‘Heartbeat’ is it’s prologue, soundtracking the unnerving pressure, mounted in the moments before declaring your feelings to someone. Multiple harmonies, whispers and autotune vocals culminate in a chorus of intoxicating glee. Complete with visualiser creatively directed by Tom Vanderzeil with type by Ana Gabrielle. Watch HERE.

         GAUCI – ‘Heartbeat‘ (Visualiser)

GAUCI share: “Heartbeat is about those intimate moments of exchanged whispers before confessing your unconditional love. It’s the feeling of being in a packed room unable to pay attention to anyone except the person you want to leave with.” Completing the release is a visualiser creatively directed by Tom Vanderzeil and Ana Gabrielle.

With each release Antonia and David Gauci and Felix Lush delve deeper into their textured sphere of sentimental electro, packaging inimitable pop smarts inside a tastefully nostalgic exterior. Their unique brand of sweeping, 80’s synth-pop reminiscent of Future Islands and Chromatics, meets the soaring euphoria of CHVRCHES and the crying-on-the-dancefloor release of Robyn, has built the group a cult following.

Locally championed by FBi Radio, Noisey, RUSSH Magazine and more inbetween performing at sold out hometown shows, GAUCI‘s danceable live show toured Australia’s east coast earlier this year, following appearances supporting Alice Ivy, Hatchie, Parcels, G Flip, Wafia and others; plus festivals Dark Mofo, BIGSOUND, Secret Garden and soon alongside Tones And I, BENEE,  DMA’S and more at Yours & Owls Festival.

The group’s immaculate production, palpably analogue with a contemporary, widescreen definition, helps them pull this out-of-time balancing act off both live and throughout their self-titled debut. Joining ‘Heartbeat‘ and the cinematic synths and 808s of ‘To Save A Moment‘, and ‘Paradise‘ includes live favourite ‘Anxious‘ and the nineties rom-com dowsed ‘November‘. Now with their forthcoming debut EP, GAUCI are ready to welcome us into their world and show their mastery over their craft.

‘Heartbeat by GAUCI is out now, buy/stream it here.

This powerful track is a fabulously crafted affair providing an intense workout that hurls a classic breakbeat into an electronic framework with uplifting melodies and life-affirming piano chords. Silverstein Share Alternate Version of ‘Infinite’ + New Music Video Taken from the Album ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’ Out Now via UNFD

This year Silverstein celebrate their 20th anniversary with the release of their ninth studio album, A Beautiful Place To Drown, out now from UNFD. The long-running band have been staying busying despite their tour plans being postponed, and today they’re back to share an alternate version of album stand-out ‘Infinite’ recorded entirely during quarantine.

The new take fully reimagines the song as a smoldering pop gem, highlighting Silverstein’s willingness to push their sound while always preserving the emotional core that’s made them one of their scene’s most beloved bands.

Many of A Beautiful Place To Drown‘s lyrics focus on everyday mental health challenges and ‘Infinite’ seems have taken on new meaning in the wake of the pandemic. For the song’s accompanying video, the band reached out to their fans, opening up the phone lines for them to relay messages of how they’re feeling during quarantine. Excerpts from the messages can be seen over the music video’s footage of empty and eerily calm locations in the band’s home country of Canada.

Silverstein guitarist Paul Marc Rousseau discussed the new version of ‘Infinite’ and the song’s evolving meaning, saying:

“‘Infinite’ was born in the black hole of anxiety — unable to remember ‘normal,’ the fear of not knowing when the feeling will end, or if it will end at all. I think everyone has experienced that type of anxiety to some extent, and for me being locked down in the early stages of covid-19 poured gas on the fire.

“Facets of anxiety that once felt difficult to name or truly pin down slowly became concrete, tangible things. The sadness I was experiencing was no longer abstract or personalised, it was something practically everyone on Earth was relating to in real time. As days became weeks and weeks became months, it was hard, if not impossible, to see any light at the end of the tunnel. I love the album version of ‘Infinite.’ It screams into the void. It captures the emotional and physical frustration, the anger of being trapped in an anxious loop. But as of late, I feel more sadness than anger, and I thought ‘Infinite’—which for months now has felt more relevant than I ever could have known—could be rearranged to feel more like I feel.”

A Beautiful Place To Drown debuted on seven Billboard charts (including #122 Top 200, #5 Rock Albums, and #3 Current Alternative) and fittingly encapsulates the best of Silverstein while pushing their sound into daring new territory. The band may be proud torchbearers of the emo and post-hardcore scenes but appearances from artists that range from Princess Nokia to Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie, Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo, Simple Plan’s Pierre Bouvier, and more, are indicative of Silverstein’s wide-reaching impact and their ability to reach listeners in all worlds of music.

‘Infinite’ is the second album track to get the reimagining treatment, following the release of ‘Where Are You (Alternate Version)’ in June. The band also released their ‘Quaranstein‘ video and put its performances out as a digital EP (with all proceeds going to the NAACP and Black Legal Action Centre), and played a special livestream event professionally shot and recorded for fans last month.

‘Infinite (Alternate Version)’ is streaming everywhere now.

BEN HARPER ANNOUNCES SOLO LAP STEEL GUITAR ALBUM WINTER IS FOR LOVERS A CULMINATION OF HIS ENTIRE MUSICAL LIFE
Music News

BEN HARPER ANNOUNCES SOLO LAP STEEL GUITAR ALBUM WINTER IS FOR LOVERS A CULMINATION OF HIS ENTIRE MUSICAL LIFE

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

Ben Harper has unveiled his new album Winter Is For Lovers (ANTI- Records), and in many ways his entire musical life has culminated in this moment. The solo recording, which features just Harper and his Monteleone lap steel guitar, is a 15-song work of original instrumental compositions imagined as a symphony. Harper has pushed musical boundaries since his 1994 debut and his lap steel guitar has played a tremendous role in his distinct sound throughout his career. But he’s never made an album that so purely distills his reverence for the instrument, and his mastery of it.

Starting today fans can order Winter Is For Lovers here from a limited 2000-piece pressing of the album on 180g vinyl, autographed, numbered and hand stamped. Orders will be fulfilled this week. The release date for the standard vinyl and digital version will be announced later this year.

Meditative and affecting, the music featured on Winter Is For Lovers is deeply ingrained in Harper’s DNA and leads directly back to The Folk Music Store, the influential California instrument shop his grandparents opened in the 1950s. The store hosted luminaries of all stripes, including Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, the Rev. Gary Davis, Doc Watson and John Fahey.  While Harper worked in the shop throughout his childhood, he met and even strung guitars for iconic players like Ry Cooder, Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, David Lindley and Jackson Browne.

Winter Is For Lovers philosophically explores the American Primitive movement pioneered by Leo Kottke and the aforementioned John Fahey. It swirls with the music Harper heard growing up, listening to the blues, Hawaiian and classical guitar masters in his mother’s record collection.  He gravitated early on to the distinct wail of the slide guitar, learning finger picking from slide master Taj Mahal and later studying with Chris Darrow of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a lap steel virtuoso who had a major influence on Harper’s lifelong embrace of the instrument.

While Harper was composing parts of the album he was also reading Infinite Jest, and Winter is deeply influenced by the book’s unique narrative structure. As Harper learned that author David Foster Wallace fused together a series of short stories to create a bigger narrative, he saw a similar potential with the pieces that would become Winter Is For Lovers, melding together a series of works named after, and inspired by, locations across the globe that hold a special place in his heart.

Says Harper:

This is my first entirely instrumental album.  It is stark, bare bones, just me and my lap steel guitar.  It is purposefully produced to sound intimate and spare, as if I am playing in your living room.  Upon first listen it may be surprising or catch some people off guard because it is dramatically stripped-down in contrast to a lot of what we hear today.

I am a big fan of flamenco, classical, Hawaiian and blues guitar, and I hope these influences are all somehow represented within Winter Is For Lovers.

I have been composing this record for most of my adult life, and the challenge this record presented to me was completely new.  To record an entire album with one guitar and no words, where every single nuance was under a microscope, was more demanding than any record I have made to date, and also more rewarding.

Ben Harper is a 3-time GRAMMY Award winner and has earned 7 nominations.  He has produced albums for Mavis Staples, Blind Boys of Alabama, Natalie Maines and Ricky Lee Jones among others.  His beloved songs have hundreds of millions of streams and he has headlined the world’s greatest venues and festival stages. Harper’s previous full length release was 2018’s GRAMMY-nominated No Mercy In This Land, his second album recorded with harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite. In 2016 Harper and his longtime band The Innocent Criminals returned with Call It What It Is, deemed “brilliant” by the Atlantic. Harper, a longtime activist, wrote the album to confront police brutality.

PARADISE CLUB RELEASE NEW VIDEO FOR "THE SEED"

PARADISE CLUB RELEASE NEW VIDEO ‘THE SEED’

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

Adelaide’s Paradise Club have dropped their intriguing new video for “The Seed”, lifted from their debut self-titled album, out now via Farmer & The Owl.

The first song on the album, and one that truly encapsulates the Paradise Club vibe, “The Seed” expertly weaves shimmering guitars with pulsating beats and rich synths while the lyrics explore going through a rocky patch and coming through the other side with fond memories.

“The Seed” has been brought to life by a fascinating video created by the band themselves, filmed in and around Antakirinja country (Coober Pedy) – the very same ruddy backdrop where Mad Max Beyond The Thunderdome was shot. Embarking on an 18-plus hour round trip up the Stuart Highway, on their album release day no less, Paradise Club stayed in one of the outback town’s famed dugouts, which you’ll see pop up in the clip alongside a wandering, blazed 3D being.

“Initially, the idea was creating a music video, putting it onto a tape, running it through a small tube TV, (one anyone who was born pre-2000 would have used to play games on), and then filming it in a vast location,” explains frontman Gere Fuss. “Like our last video ‘Zaz’, we build on using 3D imagery of a ‘being’ this time hitting closer to home by seeking services of local artist Skye Also, who wanted to make it more ‘human’ by having this character smoking a joint – as we may enjoy doing ourselves from time to time. We also saw it as an opportunity as we have not played live as a band in a video, so even though Jack (drums) is stuck in Melbourne, our friend Mr. Belletti was keen to help us fill the void. The live video was shot on tape.

“What a beautiful country we live in and – how thankful we are to be able to pay respects to elders past and present.”

Crafted over three-and-a-half years, Paradise Club’s self-titled debut album romantically deliberates themes of love, death, family and friends tempered with a euphoric soundtrack that yearns for carefree summer days that bleed into endless nights on the dance floor. It was named one of the 10 Australian Picks for July by NME and lauded by others for its intoxicatingly warm textures, glistening guitars and blissful angst. Catch Paradise Club bring it all to life at Yours & Owls Festival on January 23-24, 2021

TOM SNOWDON COVERS KYLE MINOGUE’S ‘CAN’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD’ ANNOUNCES CHANNEL EP

by the partae September 2, 2020
written by the partae

Mparntwe/Alice Springs artist Tom Snowdon is releasing his first solo material in the form of EP Channel.

As a child, one of Snowdon’s favourite records was the covers album Messenger by Yorta Yorta artist Jimmy Little. He thought the songs were all Little’s, and it’s been a collection he’s returned to over the years. At the urging of a friend earlier this year, Snowdon has created a collection of his own cover versions – both as a nod to the influence of Little and as a way to transition into creating music solo, after a career-to-date of working collaboratively with bandmates and co-writers. As evidenced by these haunting versions of ‘Two Weeks’ and ‘Unchained Melody’ it’s clear Snowdon can take a song and make it his own.

Whether paying homage to the singers who most influenced him or stepping out of his lane, Snowdon followed his voice and recorded tracks that just felt good to sing, and carried a curious atmosphere he could explore. Some of his favourite singers include Björk, Nina Simone, Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and Mark Hollis (Talk Talk). “They’re mesmerising for me because they take listeners on a journey with their voices. They’re deeply instrumental and rich with emotion, so the words they sing take on weight and power.”

The first track we’ll hear is an Australian classic ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head‘, released by Kylie Minogue in 2001. It has a bass line like something out of a Timbaland track, paired with earthy percussion and watery piano. Snowdon’s vocals wrestle the pressure and desperation of the story, layering his voice to thicken the headiness of obsession. Listen HERE.

Says Snowdon “I wanted to push myself to explore spaces I’d not normally work in and also to have fun with the arrangements. That Kylie track is such an Australian classic but is probably a bit outside the space in which I usually work … But everyone knows that song. The challenge putting it together, as with any cover, was keeping the soul of what’s special about the original but also freely interpreting it.”

‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head‘ by Tom Snowdon is out now, buy/stream it here.
For our friends at community radio, you can also download the track via AMRAP here.

The single is out 2nd September
The EP will be released 7th October

Where are you currently based? London How did you first start producing and mixing? I came from a rock and metal background originally. I was never into actual instruments myself but my friends were and I loved being around that environment. I was lucky enough to have a computer at the time, and managed to start teaching myself how to produce. I was then introduced to Pendulum who were obviously the only people doing rock and drum and bass at that time, and it sort of stemmed from there. How did your career start? I got in with Monstercat when they just started, around 2010. I put out a few beat sample packs with them, but then Mike Darlington really encouraged me to go farther and that’s when I put out my first EP, The Takeover. How has your COVID experience been so far? It’s given me more time to work on music that’s for sure. I probably wouldn’t have finished the album as quick as I did if I had still been touring. It’s been rough not being able to test my songs live though! What influenced the sound and songwriting for your epic new album 'The Promised Land'? The whole album was inspired by a lot of different themes, mainly how nature and technology clash and interact. There wasn’t any particular moment that inspired the entire album but I went on a journey of discovery for the past couple of years, listening to a broader range of music and tying my vast range of influences into the album. What did you find most challenging and rewarding through the process of creating this album? This is my debut album so the finished product was the most rewarding. The most challenging was probably admitting that it was done, because I’m always looking to keep improving the tracks! Your sound has evolved from the stereotypical Drum 'n Bass sound to a more mature and cross-genre sound, please tell us about how and why this has come about: The main thing that I wanted to do with the album was start expanding from drum ‘n’ bass and start doing other genres. People have this impression of me, because I make drum ‘n’ bass all the time, that I only listen to drum ‘n’ bass and that’s completely untrue. People who know me know I listen to and love literally all kinds of music. I love everything from, as I say, film and video game scores to screamo to french house to electro house to old school garage to whatever. You name it! I listen to everything. I really tried to hone that in when I pulled influences for the album, just to show people that it doesn’t have to come from drum ‘n’ bass at all. A lot of them don’t even come from dance music. Very rarely, except maybe some sound design and mixdown things. The main goal with it was to start introducing MUZZ as a multigenre brand and artist rather than drum ‘n’ bass only.  Where do you see Drum 'n Bass progressing in the coming years? The future of any genre is to evolve it and mash it with other styles and new sounds, which is what I’ve always done since I started making music, and this album explores those new territories. I love the genre, and always will, but I also love many other genres and don’t want to close those doors.  What do you like to do outside of music? Gaming, food, traveling!  Which artists are you listening to at the moment? Grimes, Rezz, Charli XCX, Fade Black, Oakwite, Loathe, G Jones are currently on repeat for me. What is planned for the remainder of 2020? Just to continue promoting this album as much as possible. It’s been such a process having it come together, I’m so happy it’s finally out! Favourite food and place to hangout? You can’t beat Middle Eastern food, and I honestly just love being in my studio in my own world. Where are you currently based?

London

How did you first start producing and mixing?

What influenced the sound and songwriting for your epic new album ‘The Promised Land’?

The whole album was inspired by a lot of different themes, mainly how nature and technology clash and interact. There wasn’t any particular moment that inspired the entire album but I went on a journey of discovery for the past couple of years, listening to a broader range of music and tying my vast range of influences into the album.

This is my debut album so the finished product was the most rewarding. The most challenging was probably admitting that it was done, because I’m always looking to keep improving the tracks!

JACK BOTTS RELEASES ‘HOLD YOU TAPES’ FEATURING LEAD SINGLE ‘HOLD YOU’ + 2 BONUS TRACKS + REVEALS INTIMATE QLD RELEASE SHOW DATES

Rising Australian singer-songwriter Jack Botts‘ latest release ‘Hold You Tapes’ is out now. Lead by the namesake single ‘Hold You’, the 3-track tapes release also features ‘Fireworks’ and ‘Liquid Love’.

It comes after a whirlwind response to his latest EP Northern Rivers, which has already picked up 2 million streams since its release in November 2019.

Jack explains the meaning behind lead single ‘Hold You’ below:

“‘Hold You’ was written somewhere between Byron Bay and Vancouver, and it explains the feeling of falling headfirst into a romance. Reminiscing on the moments you’ve shared together, but also the obstacle of a long distance love.”

Featuring:
1. Hold You
2. Fireworks
3. Liquid Love

Born in Brisbane and now loosely Byron Bay-based, Jack Botts has made a home in his van and cut his chops busking across Australia’s coastline. It’s this no-frills, down-to-earth approach to life and a charming knack for storytelling that has seen the singer-songwriter swiftly and organically build a core fanbase over the last two years.

Consistently present on the local live scene, Botts has a strong live presence and burgeoning demand, having sold out multiple headline shows in major metro and regional hotspots and supported high-calibre Australian artists including Tash Sultana, John Floreani, The Pierce Brothers and Ash Grunwald.

Across a small catalogue, Jack has also dominated on the streaming front, racking up over 5M+ catalogue streams in the last 12 months and 100K Monthly Spotify listeners and climbing.

To celebrate the release of ‘Hold You Tapes’, Jack Botts will play a trio of intimate QLD release shows kicking off tonight. More details and tickets below.

Botts releases independently and is distributed via UNIFIED Music Group. Hold You Tapes is out now.

TWO PEOPLE RELEASE SOPHOMORE ALBUM SECOND BODY

by the partae September 1, 2020
written by the partae
“More poppy than their debut, but cleverly keeps the dark shadows that make them more interesting.” – Cameron Adams (News Corp)

“Smattered with psychedelic touches, it is a journey that feels almost like a spiritual trip.” – The Line Of Best Fit

“Smouldering electronics that have become a staple of their new sound are still in full force, creating a driving yet calm bed beneath Phoebe’s dreamy vocals”
– Complex UK

“Shaping up to be one of the year’s best” – Purple Sneakers

“Vibrant” – NME Australia

“Stunning” – AAA Backstage

Liberation Records are proud to today release Phoebe Lou and Joey Clough’s breathtaking sophomore album Second Body – a dark and expansive nine-track collection that transports the listener deep into the duo’s utterly unique world.

The new album features the songs ‘Dream Steppin’’, ‘A Taste’, ‘Someone To Serve’ and ‘Been A Little While’, which have found a home on triple j’s airwaves and featured across a variety of Apple Music and Spotify playlists globally. It was mostly written following the release of Two People’s acclaimed debut First Body, in a rustic, isolated cabin on the windswept coastline of Skenes Creek along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road; and later recorded back in St Kilda with the duo’s good friend Simon Lam, (of fellow Melbourne act Kllo). And whilst it might appear to have come together relatively quickly, it was in fact many moons in the making.

“10 yrs of collaboration and cuppas and anxiety and purpose and lols has led us here. We love this record. And if you get anything at all from it, we will feel good.”
– Two People
That culmination of anxiety and purpose also fittingly led to the band tattooing the album release date onto their forearms, as mentioned in a recent post to their Instagram page.

An introspective look at relationships and self, tension and release, transportive and immersive; Second Body is a mood unto itself and a fitting soundscape for the trials of the present day. In the band’s own words, the album is about “…the tension that comes with being stuck in a place you don’t want to be. It’s about not being able to move to another place. So instead just imagining it up and putting that world into a record.

“First Body was all about us exploring new sounds, feeling out edges, working with raw and fragile parts. Second Body is definitive, deliberate and assertive. It’s more fierce and a little bit more fun…. A night in the desert, a dreamland, filmic and surreal…”

Two People’s debut album First Body included ‘I’m Tied, To You’, ‘Phone Call’ and ‘Fading’ and saw the band forge their own, unique path in an often crowded electronic space.  Guided by bold visual cues, DIY principles, and an emphasis on the empty space between notes as much as the notes themselves, the album saw the band perform at BigSound, where they caught the eye of the good folk at Terrible Records (and with whom they later signed to for North America), and at SXSW.

Second Body is out globally now via Liberation Records, and via Terrible Records for North America.

OCTAVIAN COLLABORATES WITH GUNNA & SAINt JHN ON ‘FAMOUS’ OUT NOW VIA BLACK BUTTER DEBUT ALBUM ARRIVING IN 2020 WITH SKEPTA AS EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

by the partae September 1, 2020
written by the partae

This year Octavian will finally release his hotly-anticipated debut album. It’s the culmination of years of progress, evolution and experience, punctuated by two acclaimed mixtapes (SPACEMAN and Endorphins), multiple awards, co-signs and high profile collaborations. And with Skepta already announced as the album’s executive producer, it’s set to be one of the year’s defining releases. Listen HERE.

On new single ‘Famous‘, Octavian teams up with Gunna, whose recent Wunna album topped the US album charts, and SAINt JHN, whose global hit ‘Roses’ has topped charts around the world. Produced by Jae5, ‘Famous‘ explores the trials and tribulations of fame and the lifestyle that comes with it. This is all about the negative sides of fame and celebrity culture, as Octavian says in his own words: “The concept of ‘Fame’ should be connected to the celebration of ones achievements, unfortunately nowadays it is the glamorisation of unthought-about entertainment”

‘Famous‘ is Octavian’s second major Transatlantic collaboration of 2020 and is an undeniable statement of intent from the multifaceted London rapper, producer and songwriter. It follows the huge success of ‘Rari‘, Octavian’s recent collaboration with Future, and is another prime example of the levels at which Octavian now operates. If everything up until now has been a sign of Octavian’s promise and flair, a suggestion of his huge potential, now he’s ready to focus and actualise his dreams.

‘Famous feat. Gunna & SAINt JHN‘ by Octavian is out now, buy/stream it here.

ERRA SIGN TO UNFD + UNLEASH NEW SINGLE + VIDEO ‘SNOWBLOOD’

by the partae September 1, 2020
written by the partae

UNFD is thrilled to announce the latest act to join the family in one of the most compelling and progressive metalcore bands of late – ERRA.

Rising from Birmingham, Alabama just over a decade ago, ERRA have vigorously toured worldwide, released four acclaimed studio albums and two EPs, earning them a sprawling fan base crossing genres and generations.

Their reputation for technical riffs, genius musicianship and emotional, visceral lyrics are fully displayed on their new single ‘Snowblood’ which sees its release today alongside a music video. The track takes on deteriorating mental health and the life-sapping effects of technology respectively.

Vocalist and guitarist Jesse Cash adds:

“The ‘Snowblood’ instrumental had a dark intensity to it, so the only lyrics that seemed to fit contextually ended up being some of the darkest we’ve ever written. We wanted to paint a picture of a person’s deteriorating mental health by creating imagery akin to what you’d see in a horror movie. Instrumentally and lyrically, all the key elements of where we’re heading as a band on our new material are there.”

ERRA join a huge crop of North American talent on UNFD’s roster, which grew with the additions of Frank Iero, Silverstein and Like Moths To Flames in 2019 on top of the likes of Stray From The Path, Silent Planet and LIMBS.

Stay tuned for more music and news from the ERRA camp soon and stream ‘Snowblood’ now.

ERRA IS:
Jesse Cash (guitar / vocals)
JT Cavey (vocals)
Alex Ballew (drums)
Conor Hesse (bass)
Sean Price (guitar)
