PRAISE FOR THE BLOSSOM

“Dreamy, intimate”
NME Australia

“Windows-down cruise music for runaways and self-searchers”
Complex

“tender lyrics and with a lustful Shoegaze/Dream-pop sound”
Office Magazine

“The Blossom wastes no time proving why she’s one to watch in the rapidly changing pop landscape“
Purple Sneakers

“Music is in the genes for Lily Lizotte”
Daily Telegraph

Sydney-raised, LA-based, genre-bending artist, The Blossom, today shares their latest single, ‘STILL WITH U’. Listen HERE and watch HERE.

‘STILL WITH U’ follows The Blossom’s previous single, ‘Angel Fangs‘, a track centered on acoustic guitar, lonely, autotuned vocals, and painstakingly vulnerable lyrics. The Blossom’s stark, relatable songwriting was on full display and the track drew praise from the like of Purple Sneakers, Lyrical Lemonade, NME Australia, Dublab, FBi Radio, and more.

While ‘Angel Fangs‘ was stripped back, ‘STILL WITH U’ is in-your-face and unapologetic, blending elements of pop, hip hop, and grunge in an intriguing yet cohesive fashion. Commanding 808s and trap drums meet electric guitars and autotuned vocals, offering an inimitable, innovative and addictive result.

On the track, The Blossom shares that “Still With U was written in my bedroom closet at 1AM. Sometimes it feels as if it’s about one of the very many ‘burning from the inside out’ kind of toxic relationships I’ve had, other times it feels as if it’s about me singing to myself. In a way, it is a serenade to ‘still being with’ the darker sides of myself that I try so hard to change or move through. Sonically, it’s a hybrid of my favorite textures: bouncing between feelings of hopefulness, restlessness, release, and tension.”

‘STILL WITH U‘ is out now, buy/stream here.

Lloyd Keary’s latest three-track EP is a creatively put together record, showing himself as a stand out, up and comer within Scotland’s dance music scene. This is Keary’s second record on the Jackie Knows Karate label after his successful first EP ‘For You’ teaming with labelmate Kleur. It’s the seventh record to come from the label which has begun to bring more exposure to the abundance of talent within Scotland’s biggest city. Tribal Drum grooves and big basslines, Be Free is perfect for peak time sets. The title track Be Free kicks off the record and uses hypnotic vocals and a dark groove which rolls through arpeggiated synths, building momentum into the final fifth-minute drop causing chaos on the dancefloor. HWG is a new take on thumping tech house grooves with a much fatter bass which is accentuated by colourful percussion which wouldn't feel out of place in the busiest dancefloors. The perfect closer, Somethin New is pure raw house at it’s finest with powerful and piercing chord stabs blending with a signature Keary bassline the track goes all out as the EP closes. Label Manager Kyle Hawkins said: ‘’There is so much talent within Scotland that people are unaware of, Glasgow has been producing some of the finest DJs and Producers in the world, the likes of Denis Sulta, Big Miz and Hudson Mohawke.  Keary is one of these underground artists who focusing so hard on his craft and has fully developed his own style and sound. JOSH TESKEY & ASH GRUNWALD RELEASE NEW SINGLE ‘HUNGRY HEART’ + ALBUM PUSH THE BLUES AWAY – OUT FRIDAY 13 NOVEMBER

by the partae October 1, 2020
written by the partae
Two local powerhouses Josh Teskey (lead singer, The Teskey Brothers) and Ash Grunwald have teamed up for Push The Blues Away (out Friday 13 November) – an album born out of a mutual love for the blues and a genuine appreciation for each other’s talents.

Following the release of first single ‘Thinking ‘Bout Myself’ comes the touching ‘Hungry Heart’ – a striking love letter penned by Josh Teskey and an emotional highlight of the album.

Josh Teskey says of the track:

“After spending many years running away, attempting to push the blues away, ‘Hungry Heart’ is the happy ending, the moment when I stopped running away and found and accepted love. The song is basically the story of spending your whole life searching for love and finding it. The hungry heart is fed! I dedicate this song to my incredible life partner Hannah and our daughter Ayva”.
Ash Grunwald says of the track:
“One of the many things that Josh has bought to this album is light and optimism that comes with those really nice major keys melodies, it’s much needed on this album I think because a lot of the stuff I bring to the table is very much in a minor key and sad blues, but the two tracks Josh has bought bring the folky lighter flavours and ‘Hungry Heart’ almost has a slight old school gospel flavour paired with the folky acoustic blues stylings it’s perfect.”
On Push The Blues Away, two of Australia’s most captivating vocalists, Josh Teskey and Ash Grunwald, come together to cast off the weight of expectation and revel in music’s most simple pleasures. Recorded entirely live and straight to tape, with their only percussion consisting of gospel inspired hand claps and stomps, the pair laid down seven original tunes, some penned by Josh, some by Ash, along with two classic Blues covers, Son House’s ‘Preachin’ Blues’ and the song that kickstarted the whole project, ‘The Sky Is Crying.’ To help them achieve this vision, they enlisted the help of Josh’s brother, Teskey Brothers’ guitarist, vocalist and Grammy-nominated engineer, Sam Teskey on production duty. Being a mastermind of analogue recording techniques, Sam knew how to capture a vibe above all else and for five days the three of them holed up at The Teskeys’ studio in Warrandyte in regional Victoria writing and recording what would become Push The Blues Away.

Both artists have had an extremely busy 12 months; renowned as one of Australia’s finest live performers, Ash Grunwald released his critically acclaimed new album MOJO along with his first book, “Surf By Day, Jam By Night” whilst The Teskey Brothers followed up their ARIA Award-winning and Grammy nominated second album Run Home Slow with the 2020 release of Live At Forum, earning them their first ARIA chart #1.

Push The Blues Away will be released through Ivy League Records on Friday 13 November on 180g, cream-coloured vinyl, CD digipak and all digital services. To celebrate, the first single ‘Thinking ‘Bout Myself’ is out everywhere now, following its debut via an incredible performance on ABC’S The Sound.

RYAN FENNIS SHARES NEW SINGLE ‘DREAMSTATE’ LIFTED FROM FORTHCOMING ICEBERG EP OUT OCT 29

by the partae October 1, 2020
written by the partae

PRAISE FOR RYAN FENNIS

“Eerie and thumping”
NME Australia

“One of my favourite musical weirdos, Ryan twists and warps his guitar sounds, mixes them with those disconcerting vocals and comes up with something altogether unexpected”
Tommy Faith (triple j Unearthed)

“Slinky, psychedelic soul grooves with blissed out production”
Bandcamp

“There isn’t an artist in the country (heck, the world even) sounding like Ryan Fennis”
Purple Sneakers

“No doubt set for great things”
Peril Magazine

Canberra’s Ryan Fennis shares new single, ‘Dreamstate‘, from his forthcoming EP ICEBERG out October 29. Listen HERE.

Following the electronic artist and producer’s previous singles ‘Save Yourself‘, and ‘Overload’, ‘Dreamstate‘ expands the Ryan Fennis cannon further with pulsating bass, stretchy synths and a flutter of filtered vocals across the track. The sonar-esque beat shifts into a grim chord breakdown, as he sings “You’ll be leaving now / So I’ll wait / Over here / In a dream state“. Following in the soft lyricism and percolating rhythms of SKTRKT and Blood Orange, ‘Dreamstate‘ is a testament to Fennis‘ off-kilter craft.

Of the release, Ryan shares: “Dreamstate is about making the most of being stationary, especially at a time like now with physical restrictions to travel. It’ easy to be swayed by what you consume on the internet and it’s allowed us to connect and discover things globally we would previously have little to no access to. There seems to be this pressure to travel the world, Dreamstate is about learning to dwell, about taking inspiration from within and  people and places around me.”

In 2020, Ryan Fennis‘ sound is his most purposeful and true-to-himself to date. Governed by intuition, innovation and a sense of authenticity, his music is a constantly evolving experiment in progress. Growing up feeling distant from popular music locally and nationally, the artist consolidates and refracts all that makes up the Canberra he lives in, through his own music and visual art.

As with anyone attempting to create something new, Ryan Fennis’ music is defined by the lack of guidelines in place. Finding room to experiment with a collage-style songwriting process and bent production sensibility, he throws left-of-field samples and genres ranging from club music, psychedelic-tinged indie rock, jazz and new wave up against one another. His forthcoming EP is his attempt to give shape and sound to what it means to live in, come from and identify with Australia’s capital city; ICEBERG is in part an analysis of life in Canberra, and a distinctly Ryan Fennis experience.

THE DISTILLERS ANNOUNCE 20th ANNIVERSARY REISSUE OF THEIR SELF-TITLED ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 30

written by the partae

Punk legends, The Distillers are thrilled to announce the 20th anniversary reissue of their self-titled debut album. The newly remastered record will be released October 30 digitally and on vinyl.

“This record is kind of the equivalent of someone reading my teenage diary, except worse,” explains vocalist and guitarist Brody Dalle. “Figuring out who I was as a songwriter, but with everyone watching and listening! All of my contemporary (at the time) influences for everyone to hear. The write up in the ‘Village Voice’ changed my life and I am forever grateful for it. If I hadn’t read such a scathing, hilarious and on point review (even though it stung really bad) I wouldn’t be the lyric writer I am today. Kim’s BADASS bass playing is still a highlight for me, and thanks to Matt Young as well for his enthusiasm and cool fast AF skin beats. The feedback at the end of blackest years I did by total accident…. I love this record so much, warts and all.”

The Distillers Track listing
  1. Oh Serena
  2. Idoless
  3. The World Comes Tumblin’
  4. L.A. Girl
  5. Distilla Truant
  6. Ask The Angels
  7. Oldscratch
  8. Girlfixer
  9. Open Sky
  10. Red Carpet And Rebellion
  11. Colossus U.S.A.
  12. Blackheart
  13. Gypsy Rose Lee
  14. The Blackest Years

ABOUT THE DISTILLERS

To call The Distillers simply a punk band doesn’t do justice to either the band or the word “punk”. Guitarist, lyricist, and vocalist Brody Dalle uses her medium as a platform for a higher plane of visceral lyricism and independence. Few modern day punk icons have not only embodied the genre so truthfully but also transformed the depth of what it can mean so thoroughly. Originally formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, the energetic band, with Dalle at the helm, released a string of damaged and powerful albums, EPs and singles with California punk labels Epitaph and Hellcat, then released their third masterpiece of an album, Coral Fang, on Sire before going on an untimely hiatus and ultimately splitting in 2006. After breaking a 12-year silence on social media late last year, The Distillers returned, and In September 2018, the punk gods released their first singles in 15 years, “Man vs. Magnet” and “Blood in Gutters.” The band are currently in the studio working on the follow up to Coral Fang with more to come throughout 2020.

PLANTS AND ANIMALS Share new single ‘Love That Boy’ New album The Jungle out October 23

by the partae October 1, 2020
written by the partae

Today, Plants and Animals are releasing a brand new single and video for ‘Love That Boy’, an intimate song created out of childhood memories and reflection about the constant evolution of family – The Jungle, their fifth studio album, is set to be released October 23rd via Secret City Records / Remote Control.

Warren Spicer shares the inspiration behind the song : “It’s a song about my family, present and past, but it feels more like a meditation. I was upset, frustrated and feeling like no one knew me—the kid me, the me I still feel I am. And then writing the song chilled me out and put me right. It was a way to connect with my dead parents and with my new life as a dad, and to give everyone a proper hug.”
The music video, directed by Yann-Manuel Hernandez, was also inspired by Warren’s early life memories. The singer-songwriter continues: “I have a strong memory of being a kid in the backseat of my parents’ car driving down the road at night in Halifax. The moon was bright, and I watched it as it danced, interrupted by trees, like a strobe light or a stop-motion film. It followed us as we drove, and I couldn’t figure out how it was doing that. Nothing else I could see out the window kept up. Why is the moon not moving? I hadn’t thought of that for a very long time, but somehow the song brought me back to that place.”

The Jungle starts with electronic drums that sound like insects at night. A whole universe comes alive in the dark. It’s beautiful, complex and unsettling. Systematic and chaotic. All instinct, no plan. Voices taunt, “yeah, yeah, yeah”. This tangled time in which we find ourselves is reflected back in shadows.

Every song is such a landscape. The first one grinds to a halt and you become a kid looking out a car window at the moon, wondering how it’s still on your tail as you speed past a steady blur of trees. You watch a house go up in a yellow strobe that echoes the disco weirdness of Giorgio Moroder, Donna Summer and David Bowie. You get pummeled by a rhythm then set free by a sudden change of scenery—the wind stops, clarity returns. You’re under a streetlight in Queens, soft focus, slow motion, falling in love. You speak French now too, in case you didn’t already. Bienvenue.

These are personal experiences made in a volatile world, and they reflect that world right back at us, even by accident. There’s one song Nic sings to his teenage son who was dealing with climate change anxiety and drifting into uncharted independence. The band carries it out slowly together into a sweet blue horizon. Warren wrote the words to another shortly after losing his father. It’s about the things we inherit not necessarily being the things we want. In a broader sense, that’s where a lot of people find themselves right now.

Plants and Animals are an iconic Montreal-based trio that began playing together as kids and emerged on the international scene in 2008 with Parc Avenue. The band has developed a varied cult following ever since, built on the shoulders of their self-produced records and their intense live shows. Parc Avenue was a critically acclaimed record (Pitchfork 8/10) released during the famous Montreal-is-the-new-Seattle music moment. This release set Plants and Animals as an incredible live force, a powerful songwriting trio and opened doors for them to tour the world many times over with people like Portugal. The Man, Gnarls Barkley and more. Three other releases followed and kept the band’s status up high: La La Land (2010) “they’re complicated and gorgeous [songs] and feel as innate as desire itself.” (Paste Magazine), The End of That (2012) “vibrant, constantly rewarding” (Spin) and Waltzed in from the Rumbling (2016) “… the strike rate is remarkably high” ★★★★ (Q Magazine). The band was shortlisted (2008) and longlisted (2010) for the Polaris Music Prize and received multiple Juno Awards and ADISQ Awards nominations over the years.

merci, mercy Releases Stand-Out Moment From Forthcoming EP, ‘Something You Like’ With Animated Lyric Video + Sells Out Three Shows At Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory + Fourth Show On-Sale Now And Exclusively Live-Streamed

“A knack for navigating palpable tensions, and translating them into refined, guitar-led melodies.” – V Magazine
“The energy is high and the music is as vibrant as her hair.” – Ones To Watch
“Boisterous and triumphant in its presentation…” – Lyrical Lemonade
“‘Fall Apart’ is a relatable reflection on cynicism in oneself.” – Coup De Main
“Her vocals are mellow, similar to Billie Eilish or Beabadoobee.” – EARMILK
“Combining youthful, quirky lyrics with an intensely catchy beat…” – EUPHORIA.
“The toe-tapping song weaves introspective and complex lyrics.” – Blanc Magazine
“Generating infectious electronica-infused pop…” – Atwood Magazine
19-year-old Sydney-based songstress merci, mercy is excited to share ‘Something You Like’ – from her debut EP no thank you, no thanks – with another cleverly animated lyric video from Bianca Bosso.

The heart of the EP, and radiating a beautiful and sincere energy, ‘Something You Like’ sees merci, mercy’s longing vocals gracefully stacked against twinkling textures of alt-pop. The delicate nature of the song makes it a stand-out moment from the release, and shows a new side to the artist, as she braces observations of a soured relationship over tender melodies. Produced by Chris Collins and premiered on Flaunt Magazine overnight, merci, mercy explains:

“This song really poured out of me and was the easiest one to write on the EP. The song was written from observing toxic relationships and seeing how someone can change you without you realising. It’s my go to song to play whenever I pick up my uke.”

‘Something You Like’ arrives on the back of three sold-out shows at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory and a newly announced fourth show for Friday October 23. The shows are merci, mercy’s first live performances ever, outside of her recently streamed set via ISOL-AID.

In addition to the announcement of the fourth show, merci, mercy is thrilled to share that the show will also be accessible to fans via a live-stream. This unique moment will bring together those in the venue and those from home for a very special celebratory performance.

Fans can gain access to the live-stream, by hitting the link HERE and following the prompts to either follow merci, mercy on Spotify, pre-add the EP on Apple Music or sign up to her mailing list. The first 1000 fans to register will gain access to the stream.

merci, mercy released her last single ‘Fall Apart’ this July. Produced by Edwin White (Vance Joy) and Joel Quartermain (G Flip, Meg Mac), and mixed by Spike Stent (CHVRCHES, Grimes, Post Malone), ‘Fall Apart’ juxtaposes the artist’s tough girl exterior with her tender heart. Spinning on triple j locally and added to a long list of playlists across Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon, the song has enamoured fans, and in conjunction with debut single ‘Fucked Myself Up’, has seen her streaming numbers grow to over 4.5 million.

ID&T Announces Reorganization

by the partae October 1, 2020
written by the partae

Amsterdam, September 28, 2020 – ID&T informed its staff today about its plan to implement a drastic reorganization. Since March, ID&T’s core business, organizing large-scale dance events, has come to a complete standstill due to COVID-19. In the plan, as presented today to staff, 40% of the jobs will be eliminated. Staff have been given the opportunity to submit ideas prior to the redundancy plan being finalized.

Ritty van Straalen, CEO of ID&T: “ID&T originated from a group of close friends with the same passion; bringing people together. This culture is still the foundation of the company almost 30 years later. These are therefore very difficult and emotional times for ID&T and of course all our employees. The impact of this crisis on our industry is unprecedented. Despite the fact that we also make use of government regulations and have reached a settlement with three of our four insurers in the dispute about the applicability of the insurance earlier this year, the losses are taking on enormous proportions and there is no clear view on what will happen next. Unfortunately, this means also for us that we can no longer avoid preparing for a worse scenario, in which it may still take a considerable time before we are fully operational again.”

ABOUT ID&T:
ID&T is founded in 1992 and organizes approximately 80 events a year. The ID&T group includes the companies b2s, ID&T Events, Q-dance, Monumental (Awakenings), Air Events, Art of Dance and VD Events and events such as Mysteryland, Amsterdam Open Air, Milkshake, Vunzige Deuntjes, Thunderdome, Defqon.1 Weekend Festival, Awakenings, Decibel Outdoor and Masters of Hardcore. Their events attract more than one million visitors a year. The ID&T group also encompasses Platinum Agency and Most Wanted DJ, two of the world’s largest hard dance booking agencies, as well as management agency Headliner Entertainment.

DJ Bone lines up DJ Stingray, Deetron, Anastasia Kristensen, Ben Sims, DR. Rubinstein, Spencer Parker and Surgeon for a special ADE FURTHER Weekender

by the partae October 1, 2020
written by the partae
This year’s ADE will take place as a series of online events and seminars. BUT for those Dutch Natives we will be running a special edition of DJ Bone Presents FURTHER Weekender at RADION Amsterdam on October 23, 24 & 25, 2020.

Taking over the whole complex for across three different nights, we will be theming each of the 3 rooms for a multi-sensory experience. DJ Bone’s creative vision to be presented with the help of RADION and some of our closest friends. This edition will take FURTHER to a whole new level and lay the groundwork for a new club model. This will conform to all government regulations and social distancing protocols to provide a safe alternative to the clubbing community until we can return to the pre-pandemic normal.

The event will take the form of a 3-hour journey through the club, beginning with safety checks for attendees. Once completed our specially trained staff will act as guides to transport you through the rooms to immerse yourself in FURTHER.

We begin in Café, here we will have the 1st headline DJ who will welcome the group. They will start the journey through the records that influenced their sound, taking breaks between the tracks to explain their selections and importance, while those in attendance begin the party.

Hour two will see a move into the De Grote Zaal where DJ Bone will be in residence taking fans through the music closest to his heart, for sessions similar to what we have seen since FURTHER launched at the beginning of June. Joining the man behind the party will be a selection of friends who he has played seminal B2B sets with over the years. An exclusive experience to be shared by the limited number of ticket holders.

The final hour and our guests will head into the De Bovenkamer. This the last of the club rooms we will be moving into, behind the decks you will find the final headline act of the night taking control of the beats for a slew of uplifting techno and house which will round off this special Weekender edition of FURTHER in style.

This will be a limited capacity event that will run across the entire club. The RADION staff will be specially trained to help orchestrate the movements between each of the rooms and guest’s safety will be ensured. This vision of an experiential club experience will draw on all the aspects we have always loved while offering up some new innovations that have been created to lift the nightclub experience to something truly special. DJ Bone is once again taking it FURTHER.

Interviewer: Anthony Huttley

Where are you both from, and what brought you to Tokyo?

Josh: Sunshine Coast, Australia –I originally came to Japan to be a J–pop singer! I was in a punk rock band before that. For me the spirit of punk rock was supposed to be about rebelling and doing something different but I felt that my band was not doing that at all. We were playing loud music but it wasn’t necessarily very different from other bands. There was nothing new or risky about it. So I guess my way of rebelling was to move to Japan to make pop music. Thankfully I didn’t end up becoming a J–pop star but I did fall in love with the food, language and culture of Japan along the way and later ended up becoming a J–pop producer.
Flo: Cologne, Germany –My whole life I have been a language geek and learning languages is my passion. I was eager to learn a language that is linguistically far away from the European languages and I already had a basic interest in Japanese culture so I started learning Japanese around the age of 16, going to Japanese classes twice a week after school in my private time. During my first year in uni I was finally able to visit Tokyo for the first time through an internship, which I did at a German company for 2 months back in 2008. I fell in love with the city and so I decided to do my exchange year abroad at Sophia University in 2009 and then finally I moved to Tokyo in 2010. I have been living here ever since.
How did you meet?

We both attended a monthly producer meetup in Tokyo called Music Producer Conference. From there we ended up making a lot of mutual friends and DJing together a lot at different clubs around the city. After a while we noticed our common taste for records with great chord progressions combined with strong vocals. This made it very natural for us to join our forces to create a music project that incorporates our favorite musical elements and aesthetics.

How did you get into electronic music?

Flo: I grew up listening to a lot of hip hop, both German and American. Once I turned 18 and started exploring the club scene in Germany. The music I was listening to quickly became mostly the electronic music that was playing at the clubs. At the time I was very much into French house music and was listening to artists like Daft Punk, the early David Guetta, Joachim Garraud, Fedde le Grand etc. However the artist that inspired me the most to actually start producing my own music was Deadmau5. I was a hardcore fan and I was also a computer geek so around the age of 19 I figured out how to be able to create my own songs on the computer. I bought my first DAW which was Fruity Loops (now FL Studio) and I have been using it ever since.

Josh: I’ve been into music my whole life. I started playing drums, piano and guitar when I was a kid. Then I started recording guitar, vocals and drums mainly on pro tools when I was in high school and really got into the production side of things. That progressed to making electronic music on Ableton using samples and virtual synths. Once I realised how fun and quick it is to produce on my laptop rather than recording a whole band it quickly took up most of my songwriting bandwidth.

How would you describe the music that you play?

Flo: Our music is based around having each individual element of the record to be a strong pole to the song on its own, while focusing on the melodic and vocal variety to be most prominent. I have been playing the piano since the age of 6, which influenced my production in the way that I usually begin to write a chord progression as a base and then start to build the song around it. I was the lead singer in aMetalcore band called “I Promised Once” which gave me experience writing melodies and toplines as well as recording vocals.

Josh: We both love melody and great chords and I think that the combination of those elements with unique sound design and drums patterns is the key to our sound. We’re starting to work with great vocalists now so that has had an impact on our music. We both have a very diverse taste in music which creates a challenge of choosing which genre of songs to release!

What’s been happening recently?

Josh: I’ve been back in Australia on the coast during the ‘rona’ situation. I hadn’t been back for 3 years so it’s great to see family and friends and just chill at the beach and go surfing. There’s been a lot of reverse culture shock! For the last couple of months we’ve been working like crazy to finish our new EP.

Flo: During the last few months I have been mostly confined to my house in Tokyo. Being forced to stay home helps alot to write new music and is in that sense a great way to use the critical situation for a good opportunity. I was able to write on this EP a lot and we managed to finally finish and release it. As for the outbreak in Japan, it is small compared to the rest of the world and the Japanese have proven yet again their highly disciplined and health conscious way of living, which is in my opinion the main contributing factor to the situation being rather calm here. Therefore I believe I can count myself lucky to be in Tokyo during these times.

Please tell us about your new EP:

Our last EP “Midnight Movies” was a new direction for us. For this EP we’ve continued on that path of more pop oriented songs with chill uplifting vibes. We worked with a singer in LA on the first track “Let Me”. The whole process has involved a lot of video calls and messages!

What was the inspiration behind it?

Flo: Separation has been a big theme this year, both in the minds of the public and in my own life. So that was a big influence on the sound of this EP. They say out of lovesickness emerge someof the most creative ideas, which I think this EP proves. It incorporates a lot of the feelings I was having while creating the sound.

Josh: The whole world is very divided right now. Earlier in the year people couldn’t go outside to meet their loved ones and even now we still have social distancing rules. Plus the fact that we are collaborating with different people around the world over our computers. Separation was a natural theme for these songs. I think on this EP we really worked on honing the sound from our last release and worked hard to make everything cohesive and to sound as clear as possible.

Which software do you use?

FL Studio, Ableton Live and sometimes Pro Tools.
What are your top 3 plugs in the studio?

Decapitator! It’s asaturator from Soundtoys that just sounds great. FabFilter Pro–Q is probably our go to EQ and the Waves series of plug–ins including the L2 and L3 limiters are very solid too.

Where can we see you DJ?

Our most recent show was at Ce La Vi in Tokyo on New Year’s Eve. Hoping everything gets back to normal soon so that we can get back to the clubs to drop our new songs!

Favourite food and place to hangout?
Niku yokocho in shibuya is fun! There’s a small standing udon place in naka–meguro in Tokyo which is amazing too. So many amazing food options in Tokyo. When we hang out it’s usually at a club in Tokyo like Womb or Ageha.

Death Bells New Album New Signs of Life Out Now on Dais Records

by the partae September 30, 2020
written by the partae

New Signs Of Life, the new studio album from Sydney now Los Angeles band Death Bells, is out now on Dais Records.

Death Bells is the longtime musical collaboration between Will Canning and Remy Veselis. Formed in 2015 during their late adolescent years in Sydney, Australia, the act has proven to be a mainstay in the alternative underground musical landscape both in their homeland and overseas during their five-year history. Blurring the lines of post-punk and garage rock, Death Bells has morphed and transformed as the two members have grown up throughout their late teenage years living together into early adulthood. With Canning’s distinctive baritone and the kinetic collection of reverb-drenched leads by Veselis being a constant during their musical output, the two made the permanent move 7,000 miles away to Los Angeles, California in 2018 where the current incarnation of Death Bells has blossomed.

Following the releases of their debut E.P, much-loved first album, and seven-inch single on Funeral Party Records and their 2019 single on Metropolitan Indian, Death Bells have joined the Dais Records family for their highly anticipated sophomore album New Signs of Life. Three years in the making, the release sees the act embrace their diverse tastes to deliver unforgettable hooks and more expansive sounds across its nine graceful songs.

Engineered and mixed under the attentive eye of Colin Knight at Paradise Studios throughout mid-to-late 2019, New Signs of Life is the band’s most complete work to date. Along with classic Death Bells brooding romanticism, the themes of the record divulge personal insight into their move across the world and both the strained and new relationships that have materialised throughout their existence. Slated for release on September 25th, New Signs of Life is as advertised – it is the career-defining new chapter to commence the new decade.

New Signs Of Life, the bands sophomore album, is definitely one of the most polished post-punk records you will hear this year.

GOAT GIRL Announce new album On All Fours Share first single & video ‘Sad Cowboy’

by the partae September 30, 2020
written by the partae
UK quartet Goat Girl are delighted to announce their new album On All Fours out Friday 29 January, 2021 via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records. The new album was produced by Dan Carey (Kae Tempest, black midi & Franz Ferdinand) in South London in early 2020. The album will be available on black double LP, transparent pink double LP & CD.

This new record sees the band veer away from the confrontational lyricism of their debut & indicates Goat Girl’s maturing perspectives in discussing the world’s injustices and social prejudices, using the music to explore global, humanitarian, environmental and mindful wellbeing.

Thoughout, On All Fours, Goat Girl’s frequent use of sci-fi synthesisers, off-beat chord progressions, analogue drum machines, diverse vocal styles and distinct, gritty guitars fuse a musical language that expresses both former characteristics and newer developments of the band’s sound and vision On All Fours.

Goat Girl’s Clottie Cream on the new lead track ‘Sad Cowboy’ – “Sad Cowboy centres around the idea of losing a grip on reality and how often this can happen. When you’re within a world that constantly makes you feel as though your living out a really bad dream, disillusionment is inevitable.”

Watch the video for ‘Sad Cowboy’ directed by Jocelyn Anquetil (King Krule) below.

Goat Girl are Lottie Cream, Rosy Bones, Holly Hole and L.E.D.

NOVEL ANNOUNCES FIRST MAJOR 2021 DANCE EVENT, SECRET INNER-CITY LOCATION

NOVEL ANNOUNCES FIRST MAJOR 2021 DANCE EVENT, SECRET INNER-CITY LOCATION

by the partae September 30, 2020
written by the partae

It’s been a tough year for many, and with over six months since Novel’s last event, it’s been a quiet one too. The agency, known for high-quality productions like B3 @ Marvel Stadium, Let Them Eat Cake @ Werribee Mansion and Pitch Music & Arts Festival, is waiting patiently like most other businesses to finally put up the ‘Doors Open’ sign.

As we start to see some light at the end of the tunnel, everyone can share in the small comfort that, at least, we are all in this together, a sentiment shared by Novel Director Daniel Teuma: ‘Without a doubt, for many, myself included, this has been a challenging year. Who knows what the other side will look like – but the silver lining here is that there is an ‘other’ side. We are choosing to focus on that.’

And by that he is referring to Novel’s first physical event launch since the start of the pandemic – a promising prospect set to open their 2021 account with a bang. The event will see the return of flagship series smalltown, a brand they roll out for top tier international dance acts including DJ KOZE, Nina Kraviz and Stephen Bodzin. The series is also known for conceptualising and utilising diverse and interesting locations, which in the past have included spaces like Caulfield Racecourse and St. Kilda Foreshore. ‘For our first event back we have secured a 5000 plus capacity inner-city location that has never been used before. It’s a location we’ve been working since before COVID.’ For now, however, Novel will announce the event at a later date. Why? ‘We like to build anticipation’, he says calmly before showing us a cheeky smile.

What we can parse out of him is that the location is in an industrial area and has acres of space. More importantly, its almost secluded location will ensure that sound restrictions will be a virtual non-problem. And that will be music to the ears of ticket holders – and the Full Throttle Entertainment team responsible for overseeing and installing their crisp Funktion-One Soundsystem.

So who will play at it? The headliner will be Maceo Plex who will be Ben Klock, who will make his first Australian appearance in two years. There can be no doubt that he is a Melbourne favourite, and you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who does not agree on his techno pedigree. Ben Klock would be worth the price of admission alone. Still, Teuma promises more announcements down the track: ‘We have more international artists lined up which we will announce over the next couple of months.’

Ben Klock (GER)

A fixture in Resident Advisor’s top-10 DJs for the best part of a decade, Ben Klock needs little introduction. Having become a Berghain resident in 2005, he has since established himself at the forefront of Berlin’s modern techno movement, an ever-present symbol of the city’s vast musical landscape. His long-standing relationship with the notorious techno institution has formed the backdrop to his success, providing an invaluable platform that has allowed him to become one of the most in-demand DJ-producers of his generation. Soundcloud
