Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are amped for the New Year with brand new single Pukebox!

Stepping back into the spotlight for a brand new year, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets hit the ground running with the release of their latest single, ‘Pukebox’.

At just over three minutes, this new slice of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets chaos is the latest installment of the band’s forthcoming new studio record, SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound, due for release February 5th. Hectic and relentless in pure unadulterated Psychedelic Porn Crumpets fashion, ‘Pukebox’ is one ride that fans will want to be on as brighter horizons look promising for 2021.

PRE ORDER ALBUM

Recorded between songwriter Jack McEwan’s home studio and Tone City Studios in WA, ‘Pukebox’ is a delicious example of how tight the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets sound has become over their last few years of writing and touring.

Receiving its worldwide premiere on BBC Radio 1 with Annie Mac, ‘Pukebox’ captures the essence of SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound and sits as a great insight into the new era ahead.

“‘Pukebox was the first song I used as a reference while creating the flavour for the record. I’d had the idea for the track for a while but I never thought it fit the style of our previous albums. I wrote the first part in first person, talking about my time at home drinking moonshine and wondering who else was doing the same. Then I compared that in the second verse with a secondary version of myself who I wrote about as a character, a little bit lost, waking up with a hangover in random cities trying to find a meaning while it sailed right past me. Both unaware of each other’s existence while slowly going mad through repetitive consumption.”
Jack McEwan, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets

2020 saw Psychedelic Porn Crumpets keep the wheels turning with new music, despite being unable to tour; releasing ‘Mr. Prism’ and ‘Tally-Ho!’ to keep the appetites of fans satiated. With both singles earning acclaim across Australian and international radio stations including Triple J, Radio X and BBC Radio One, as well as right across Spotify, Apple Music and multiple music editorial titles, the hype up for the new album started off strong.

Capping off their year with a blistering spin with Triple J’s Like A Version series, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets reminded folks that although they (like everyone else) was forced to take pause from usual programming in 2020, they weren’t resting on their laurels.

PRAISE FOR PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

“A surrealistic psych-rock anthem that showcases the band’s frenetic compositional style.”
Rolling Stone Australia

“Utterly face-melting!”
BBC Radio 1, Jack Saunders

“…The energy they pack into their live shows is incredible and it’s all backed up by soaring melodies and expert riffwork!”
Louder Than War

“Besides having one of the greatest band names in the country, PPC are one of Perth’s best live acts, building headbanging spectacles from their fuzzy psych rock nuggets.”
Triple J

“Who needs a roller-coaster when PPC are out here producing the same adrenaline? It’s always such a rush listening to ya’ll.”
Triple J, Bridget Hustwaite

“As Summer 2020 continues to crawl along a flat line of dread and uncertainty, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are back to show that an alter-ego could be the cure for all our pandemic blues.”
Vanyaland

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets will return to live shows, supporting Ocean Alley on their national tour throughout August and September.

To celebrate the new single, Jess Locke announces an 8-date Victorian tour, performing to audiences in Melbourne, Ballarat, Kyneton, Castlemaine, Beechworth and Warrnambool, kicking off Saturday 30 January - tickets on sale now here. As premiered on triple j's Home & Hosed, 'Dead and Gone' "is a catharsis, a shedding of the old and an embrace of what’s to come." explains Locke. "Singing it feels like vomiting up my sadness and regret and finding a moment of peace. People probably think that all singers always love singing, but that’s not true for me. Sometimes it feels like work and it takes a lot of energy. But I enjoy singing this song. I like the way it feels in my throat and my body. To me, this song isn’t just about moving on and healing, it is that in itself. I wish I could say that about more songs, but I can say it about this one. One of my favourite moments on the record is at the end of this song, when the humble little folk tune flies off into the sky in a looping, weaving, transcendent celebration of sounds. It’s a metamorphosis in real time." On the accompanying video Locke continues "I saw these time lapse videos online of plants moving and bending with the sunlight and I just thought that was really beautiful - those incremental changes that can so easily go unnoticed but are also so important. I suppose the song is fundamentally about growth, so it felt like a good visual metaphor to use for the video." 'Dead and Gone' follows on from last year's album tasters; first single ‘Fool’ - a simple and raw track, seeking to partner dirty grunge guitars, a fuzzy lead, gritty vocals and a punchy rhythm section - followed by the beautifully contrasting second track 'Destroy Everything'. Both were received to wide acclaim with airplay across Australia and beyond including radio additions at Double J, FBi Radio, 2SER, RTR, & SYN, plus spins on triple j, KEXP & more. Don’t Ask Yourself Why, Jess Locke’s third album, is twelve tracks steeped in the Melbourne songwriter’s trademark style - raw and honest storytelling, with a tendency for melancholy and at times poetic inclinations. The album traverses themes of human behaviour, our egos and self-reflection. On Don’t Ask Yourself Why, Locke invites contemplation. "I mean the phrase ironically, because really, I do want you to ask why" explains Locke. Locke and bandmates James Morris and Chris Rawsthorne, worked with producer Rob Muinos (Saskwatch, Julia Jacklin), to record the album in a tiny studio in the back of a guitar shop in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, before it was mastered by John Davis at Metropolis in the UK (Lana Del Ray, The Killers, Gorillaz). “For this record I was a lot more open in my writing process than in the past in terms of genre. I tried not to write any particular kind of song and instead just see what kind of style the song wanted to be. I found it to be an extremely productive way to write. I definitely came up with some pretty weird, and just bad, stuff that didn’t make it onto the record, but it’s the reason all of the songs that did make it are so stylistically diverse.” Locke says of the album. Don't Ask Yourself Why follows on from 2018’s 7” My Body Is An Ecosystem / Nothing At All and Locke's acclaimed 2017 LP Universe which debuted at #18 on the AIR Independent Label Album Chart, landed triple j Feature Album, was nominated for the Australian Music Prize and was #20 in Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of 2017. Praise for Julien Baker

“Little Oblivions unflinchingly reflects on the traumas that have defined Baker’s young life to date, channelled through haunting melodies and her plaintive, country-lonesome voice” – MOJO

“Her most striking album yet” – DIY

“There are traditional verse/chorus peaks here, yet every element contains its own micro- tempest – rich guitar tangles rearing like waves – as Baker stares down the conflict of what pleasure means to an addict” – The Guardian

“An immersive journey (…) a blend of electronica, soundscape and folk” – i

“an understatedly exciting new direction for one of the best songwriters of our time” – DIY

“An anthem of vigorous hope” – Fader

“2020 needed more Julien Baker in it, and the emotive singer-songwriter came through”
– Teen Vogue

“Stunning” – Nylon

“When Julien Baker sings, the people listen, and “Faith Healer” — the raspy-voiced indie rocker’s new single — is no exception. The soul-baring cut is as much a song about literal addiction as it is an ode to misplaced faith.” – MTV

Julien Baker has shared a new taste of her forthcoming album Little Oblivions by way of a new single ‘Hardline’, which she releases today. Listen to the song and watch the stop-motion animation video HERE.

Julien says, “A few years ago I started collecting travel ephemera again with a loose idea of making a piece of art with it. I had been touring pretty consistently since 2015 and had been traveling somuch that items like plane tickets and hotel keycards didn’t have much novelty anymore. So I saved all my travel stuff and made a little collage of a house and a van out of it. I wanted to incorporate it into the record and when we were brainstorming ideas for videos we came across Joe Baughman and really liked his work so we reached out with the idea of making a stop-motion video that had similar aesthetic qualities as the house I built did. I don’t know why I have the impulse to write songs or make tiny sculptures out of plane tickets. But here it is anyway: a bunch of things I’ve collected and carried with me that I’ve re-organized into a new shape.”

The video for ‘Hardline’ was directed by Joe Baughman, who notes: “Man, even after having spent 600 hours immersed in ‘Hardline’ and having listened to it thousands of times, I am still moved by it. It was a fun and ambitious challenge creating something that could accompany such a compelling song.”

“The style of the set design, inspired by a sculpture that Julien created, was especially fun to work in. I loved sifting through magazines, maps, and newspapers from the 60s and 70s and finding the right colors, shapes, and quotes to cover almost every surface in the video.”

Overnight, Julien‘s session and interview with Cheryl Waters for KEXP was broadcast. She performed ‘Hardline’ as well as other tracks off Little Oblivions – watch HERE.

Last week, Baker performed the LP’s first single, ‘Faith Healer’, on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Filmed in Nashville, Baker is backed by a full band, exemplifying the expansive sound that can be heard on the forthcoming album.  Stereogum labeled the performance “stunning” while Rolling Stone noted, “Baker and her backing band moved through the expansive track and built steadily toward its final booming chorus. ‘Oh, faith healer,’ come put your hands all over me,’ Baker sings, pushing her voice to its stunning upper limits.”

Little Oblivions will be released on February 26 via Matador Records / Remote Control Records. The New York Times included the album in their ‘11 Things To Look Forward to In 2021’, column noting  “How does a songwriter hold on to honest vulnerability as her audience grows….she scales her music up to larger spaces, backed by a full rock band with ringing guitars and forceful drums. But she doesn’t hide behind them; she’s still ruthless and unsparing, particularly about herself.” Rolling Stone said “Little Oblivions’ is not only the most richly produced, pop-aware release of Baker’s career, but also her the most unsparingly honest in its messiness” and Variety stated “While the basics of her autobiographical and cathartic songwriting style remain the same, the arrangements are far more fleshed out with multiple instruments, nearly all of which are played by Baker herself. Without pushing an obvious comparison too far, what Bridgers’ ‘Punisher’ was to 2020, ‘Little Oblivions’ is very likely to be to 2021.”

‘Faith Healer” first introduced the exhilarating, widescreen musical palette and infectious spirit of risk-taking found on Little Oblivions, a transformative sonic shift from Baker’s more spare and intimate previous work. Engineered by Calvin Lauber and mixed by Craig Silvey (The National, Florence & the Machine, Arcade Fire), both of whom worked with Baker on 2017’s Turn Out the Lights, the album was recorded in Baker’s hometown of Memphis, Tennessee between December 2019 and January 2020. Baker’s tactile guitar and piano playing are enriched with newfound textures encompassing bass, drums, synthesizers, banjo and mandolin, with nearly all of the instruments performed by Baker.  The album weaves unflinching autobiography with assimilated experience and often hard-won observations from the past few years, taking Baker’s capacity for starkly galvanising storytelling to breathtaking new heights.

Little Oblivions is the follow up to Baker’s 2017 sophomore album and first on Matador Turn Out The Lights. The New York Times said the LP is “the work of a songwriter who has resonated with an international audience (…), the rare second album that, despite new self-consciousness, stretches beyond an unspoiled debut to reach for even bigger things, with all its passion intact”. The Sunday Times said “the mix of detached vocals, lush arrangements and laid-bare post-mortems on love, loss, dysfunction and acceptance is devastating.”

In 2018, Baker formed boygenius with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. The resulting eponymous EP and joint North American tour made for one of the most celebrated and talked about musical communions of that year, highlighting Baker at the forefront of a burgeoning generation of era-defining artists.

Little Oblivions

If you are lucky enough to have a future where the present anxieties of distance become romantic memories, I hope there are people who turn this album over in their hands years from now and remember the world it tumbled into. A world that, in whatever future moment exists, will likely be defined by the work people undertook and the fights people continued to show up for. But it will also be a world defined by how many of us exist on the other side of distance.

In the moment, here is a new Julien Baker album that arrives as a world comes to newly understand its relationship with touch, with distance. At the time of this writing, I shouldn’t want to run into the arms of anyone I love and miss, and yet I do. In an era of hands pressed on the glass of windows, or screen doors. An era of hands reaching back. An era where touch became an illusion. If we have been unlucky enough, our own lifetimes have prepared us for the ever-growing tapestry of aches.

To wrestle with the interior of one’s self has become a side effect of the times, and will remain a side-effect of whatever times emerge from these. The first time I ever heard Julien Baker, I wanted to know how an artist could survive such relentless and rigorous self-examination. I have been lonely, I have been alone, and I have been isolated. There are musicians who know the nuances between the three. What whispers in through the cracks of a person’s time alone. Julien Baker is one of those artists. A writer who examines their own mess, not in a search for answers, but sometimes just for a way out. A lighthouse to some newer, bigger mess.

It is hard to put into words what this feels like. Little Oblivions is an album that steps into that feeling and expands it. Sonically, from the opening swells of sound on ‘Hardline’ rattling the chest, loving but persistent jabs to the way ‘Relative Fiction’ spills into ‘Crying Wolf,’ which feels like speeding down a warm highway that quickly turns into a sparse landscape, drowning in a hard rain. Lyrically, too, of course. There are writers who might attempt to bang at the doors of their listeners, shouting their particular anguish of the hour. And there are undoubtedly times when I have needed that to get from one sunrise to the next. But there are also writers who show up assuming anyone listening already knows what it is to crawl themselves back from one heartbreak, or to shout into an enduring darkness and hear only an echo. Little Oblivions is an album that details the crawling, details the shouting. An album that doesn’t offer repair, or forgiveness. Sometimes, though, a chance to revel in the life that is never guaranteed. Yes, the life that grows and grows and is never promised. How lucky to still be living, even in our own mess.

The grand project of Julien Baker, as I have always projected it onto myself, is the central question of what someone does with the many calamities of a life they didn’t ask for, but want to make the most out of. I have long been done with the idea of hope in such a brutal and unforgiving world, but I’d like to think that this music drags me closer to the old idea I once clung to. But these are songs of survival, and songs of reimagining a better self, and what is that if not hope? Hope that on the other side of our wreckage – self-fashioned or otherwise – there might be a door. And through the opening of that door, a tree spilling its shade over something we love. A bench and upon it, a jacket that once belonged to someone we’d buried. Birds who ask us to be an audience to their singing. A small and generous corner of the earth that has not yet burned down or disappeared. I can be convinced of this kind of hope, even as I fight against it. To hear someone wrestling with and still thankful for the circumstances of a life that might reveal some brilliance if any of us just stick around long enough.

Julien, how good it is to hear you again. And now, in all of our anguish and all of our glory. I miss the way the outside world reflected myself back to me. Now, I make mirrors out of the walls. I am so thankful for a better noise than the howling of my own shadows. Julien, you have done it again. You expert magician. You mirror-maker. Thank you for letting us once again watch you maneuver through all of your pleasant and unpleasant self-renderings. If there is a future, there will be people in it who might not remember how this album came at a time when so many hungered for a chance to put themselves back together. When the imagination of a person, a city, a country, was expanding. When, despite all of that, in the quiet moments, there were people who still wanted to be held by someone they maybe couldn’t touch. Thank you, Julien, for this comfort. This glass box through which a person might better be able to see a use for their own grief. This kingdom of small shards of sunlight, stumbling their way in to disrupt the darkness.

Photo Credit Jack Bool Download Hi-Res Image Brijean - the Oakland-based duo of Brijean Murphy and Doug Stuart - shares the new single/video, “Ocean,” from their forthcoming album, Feelings, out February 26th on Ghostly International. It follows the single 'Day Dreaming,' “a full-on swoon, a dazed, lovestruck reverie that captures that magical feeling of giving yourself over to someone — or something — new” (Stereogum). Murphy’s vocals on 'Ocean' are reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto’s airy croon, floating atop a brushed drum pattern, sparkling Rhodes lines, and softly funky woodblock bops. 'Ocean' stands out by leaning back for momentary sways of blissful introspection. “‘Ocean’ reflects on uncertainty while maintaining curiosity,” says Brijean. “Written as an inquiry into self-reflection, the dimensions of love for another person and humanity's capacity for health. Around the time we wrote the song, we were listening to a lot of Jobim and wanted to channel some of the serenity his music gives us." For the 'Ocean' video, “Various methods of video feedback and modular video synthesis were utilized to manipulate the footage captured by Brijean and Doug,” remarks director flatspot ___•. “We decided on a black and white treatment of the footage, contrasting with selective coloring and unusually cropping of the clips to evoke a dreamlike sequence, bringing the ocean to the desert.” Watch “Ocean” Video Murphy – one of indie's most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls) – and Stuart, who share backgrounds in jazz, Latin and soul music and were both fixtures in Oakland's diverse music scene, began collaborating in 2018. Following the duo’s first sessions, which resulted in the mini-album Walkie Talkie (released in 2019 on Native Cat Recordings), Brijean continued collaborating in Oakland, inviting friends Chaz Bear, Tony Peppers, and Hamir Atwal, who all would end up contributing to the album. “We improvised on different feels for hours,” says Murphy. “Nothing quite developed at first but we had seeds. We re-opened the sessions a couple months later, after returning from tours, and spent a month developing the songs in a little 400 square foot cottage.” The leap from 2019’s Walkie Talkie to Feelings is marked by a notable expanse in range and energy. Brijean’s signature sound — a golden-hued dream pop tropicalia of dazzling beats and honeyed vocals — elevates with the addition of live drummers, strings, and synths. The album also finds Murphy fully trusting in her strengths, not just as a percussionist, but as a songwriter and collaborator. “Valuing myself as elemental instead of an ‘aux’ percussionist, and the undoubted support and talents of Doug, encouraged me to both make this project and collaborate with many different people.” Brijean wants you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul. With Feelings, they’ve manifested a gentle collective space for respite, for self-reflection, for self-care, for uninhibited imagination and new possibilities. The album cultivates a specific vibe, a softness Murphy has come to call “romancing the psyche.” In nebulous and verdant worlds of hazy melodies, feathery hooks, and percussive details, Feelings simply want us to feel alive. The songs radiate in wonderful abandon and with a sense of devotion to the self.

‘Ocean’ are reminiscent of Astrud Gilberto’s airy croon, floating atop a brushed drum pattern, sparkling Rhodes lines, and softly funky woodblock bops. ‘Ocean’ stands out by leaning back for momentary sways of blissful introspection.

“‘Ocean’ reflects on uncertainty while maintaining curiosity,” says Brijean. “Written as an inquiry into self-reflection, the dimensions of love for another person and humanity’s capacity for health. Around the time we wrote the song, we were listening to a lot of Jobim and wanted to channel some of the serenity his music gives us.”

For the ‘Ocean’ video, “Various methods of video feedback and modular video synthesis were utilized to manipulate the footage captured by Brijean and Doug,” remarks director flatspot ___•. “We decided on a black and white treatment of the footage, contrasting with selective coloring and unusually cropping of the clips to evoke a dreamlike sequence, bringing the ocean to the desert.”

Watch “Ocean” Video

Murphy – one of indie’s most in-demand percussionists (Poolside, Toro Y Moi, U.S. Girls) – and Stuart, who share backgrounds in jazz, Latin and soul music and were both fixtures in Oakland’s diverse music scene, began collaborating in 2018. We re-opened the sessions a couple months later, after returning from tours, and spent a month developing the songs in a little 400 square foot cottage.”

The leap from 2019’s Walkie Talkie to Feelings is marked by a notable expanse in range and energy. “Valuing myself as elemental instead of an ‘aux’ percussionist, and the undoubted support and talents of Doug, encouraged me to both make this project and collaborate with many different people.”

Brijean wants you to move, physically, mentally, dimensionally; this is dance music for the mind, body, and soul.

LISTEN TO ‘OIL & WATER’
Mitch King is ecstatic to sign to Reclusive. “To be selected by Michael Gudinski and have him believe in my music is a great honour. I’m really looking forward to releasing lots of new music this year. Thank you to Michael, Andrew Mackie, and the whole Mushroom team – I can’t wait to see what the future holds for our new partnership.”

Michael Gudinski is thrilled to have Mitch join the Reclusive family. “I have always been fascinated with the one-man band concept. After seeing Mitch perform live, I knew there was something unique and special about him. The fact that Mitch’s song ‘Coming Back’ was used and embraced by the NFL team The Green Bay Packers was a true testament to his song writing and I was surprised that he wasn’t already signed after that! The reaction we had after Mitch performed 5 Seconds Of Summer’s track ‘Youngblood’ on The State Of Music was incredible and it made it clear that we had to have him on Reclusive.”

A&R Manager Andrew Mackie says, “due to the honesty in his songwriting and openness in his live performances, Mitch has built an incredibly loyal fanbase. I can’t wait for more people to discover Mitch’s talents and integrity.”

‘Oil & Water’ was born when Mitch and Mark Lizotte met for a writing session in Sydney. Mitch funnelled his personal experience into the track – “as much as you like to be with someone, sometimes the differences between two people are so vast, you realise you are like oil and water”.

Born and raised on the Gold Coast, Mitch King spends his days travelling around Australia in his campervan, playing his music at the shows and festivals across the country. He first started playing guitar at the age of 14, spending hours in his bedroom playing music. His single ‘Coming Back’ reached new heights when it was picked by the US NFL team Green Bay Packers to promote their season opener. Mitch has graced festival stages at the likes of the Tamworth Country Music Festival and St Kilda Festival, and supported artists such as Tones And I, America The Band, and Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson.

Mitch has spent 2020 focused on writing new music and is looking forward to releasing an EP this year.

Silverstein Announce ‘Out Of This World’ Virtual Concert Series 3-Part Immersive Performances Streaming In February New Album ‘A Beautiful Place To Drown’ Out Now

After a whirlwind 2020 celebrating two decades together and the release of their ninth studio album, Silverstein are announcing plans to kick off 2021 with an immersive livestream event series in February.

Across three weekends the band will perform unique sets spanning their extensive catalogue. Virtual VIP “meet and greets” and photo opps will be available with the full band, meanwhile fans can grab extremely limited merch items including silk screen posters, an official Guitar Pick tin with Silverstein Picks, plus the ‘Out of this World’ soundtrack (scored by Silverstein’s honorary 6th member, producer Mike Tompa) on cassette.

Tickets, 3-Show & VIP passes and limited merch are on sale now via www.SilversteinStore.com

On the shows, Silverstein vocalist Shane Told says:

“After our ‘Next Level Livestream’ we thought about how we could step up our game even more! ‘Out Of This World’ will offer three different sets featuring our greatest hits, acoustic jams and ‘Discovering The Waterfront’ in its entirety. But of course, it will be more than just music, more than just bangers… We have enlisted some of the best people in the country to help us pull this off, so expect the finest in production quality, video and sound.

“Fans will get to hear a variety of tunes spanning our entire career and a few songs we haven’t played live in a long time… or ever. Make sure you swing by our merch “table” and pick something up too!”

With traditional touring and promo plans stunted due to COVID restrictions, Silverstein doubled down to celebrate their 2020 album A Beautiful Place To Drown in creative ways, including recording alternate versions of ‘Infinite’ & ‘Where Are You‘ during lockdown, and releasing their ‘Quaranstein‘ documentary.

After capping a monumental – though unconventional – 20th anniversary year with the release of Redux II and their debut livestream event, Silverstein will come together to bring their ‘Out Of This World’ streaming experience to fans in February. Full details below.

‘A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO DROWN’ OUT NOW VIA UNFD
CLICK TO STREAM/PURCHASE:

A Beautiful Place To Drown debuted on seven Billboard charts (including #122 Top 200, #5 Rock Albums, and #3 Current Alternative) and garnered global media praise. Encapsulating the best of Silverstein while pushing their sound into daring new territory, the record finds the five-piece straddling their emo and post-hardcore roots on top of pop and rock sensibilities.

With huge appearances from the likes of rap goddess Princess Nokia to Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie, Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo, Simple Plan’s Pierre Bouvier, and more peppered throughout, ABPTD is indicative of Silverstein’s fluidity and wide-reaching impact to listeners in all worlds of music. A Beautiful Place To Drown is streaming everywhere now. More details and tickets to Silverstein’s ‘Out Of This World’ livestream series below.

EMMIT FENN EMBRACES THE DARKNESS ON NEW SINGLE “EDGE OF THE DARK” LEAD RECORD FOLLOWS ANNOUNCEMENT OF DEBUT ALBUM FAR FROM HERE

Following a world-changing year, Emmit Fenn offers some much needed light to 2021 with his powerful new single, “Edge Of The Dark” – listen HERE. The heart-melting record is the first single fresh off of the announcement of his debut album Far From Here set for release this April.

“You only get one debut album and this is mine. I’ve had the incredible opportunity over the years to try lots of different genres and styles and when you listen to this body of work it’s pretty clear that this is the result of that,” express Emmit.

“I think a lot of artists find themselves in a certain lane early on and feel like they need to stick with it their whole career, but constantly creating different things is something that has always excited me and something I will always do. Each song on the album brings something new, something different, and ‘Edge Of The Dark’ is no different.”

“Edge Of The Dark” explores the discovery of new perspectives and the idea of embracing the darkness. It has been said that we cannot know the light without experiencing the darkness, but at the same time, both dark and light experiences may be considered great teachers. Growth and transformation, in fact, are born out of darkness.

With his lead single setting the tone for his debut album, Far From Here is undoubtedly setting up to be the soundtrack to your escapism. At times during 2020, we’ve all wanted to travel “Far From Here”. Emmit Fenn’s long-awaited, debut album is for those looking to escape in search of hope.

The independent artist is one of the few collaborators to have worked alongside pop phenomenon Billie Eilish, co-writing and co-producing her “bitches broken hearts” in 2017. Emmit has also produced for the likes of Lolo Zouai, Yuna, Ry X, Shallou and Vic Mensa and scored the TV show Five Points for Mary Ramos (Quentin Tarantino’s music supervisor).

Emmit Fenn‘s “Edge Of The Dark” is out now.

BEN HARPER SHARES INSPIRING NEW SONG “BLACK BEAUTY” FEATURED IN THE FILM ‘BLACK BOYS’

BEN HARPER SHARES INSPIRING NEW SONG “BLACK BEAUTY” FEATURED IN THE FILM ‘BLACK BOYS’

by the partae January 13, 2021
written by the partae

Ben Harper has released “Black Beauty”, an original song for the 2020 film ‘Black Boys’.

Listen to it HERE.

“It was an honour to have been asked to write a song for this culturally vital documentary,” Harper said. “After watching ‘Black Boys’ and discussing it in depth with [director] Sonia Lowman, I went immediately to work on composing ‘Black Beauty.’ I am old-school and still love getting players in a room together, so a production of this scale during a pandemic was challenging, with quarantine. I was fortunate that the incredible musicians in my circle have taken it upon themselves to become circumstantial recording engineers, and thanks to modern recording technology and some FaceTime sessions, I was able to work by sending tracks back and forth over the Internet.”

A film for this historic moment in a nation still struggling to rectify its racist legacy, ‘Black Boys’ illuminates and celebrates the full humanity of Black men and boys in America. It is a love story exploring the body, mind, voice, and heart through intimate, intergenerational conversations and stories.

At the intersection of education, criminal justice and sports, ‘Black Boys’ reveals the emotional landscape of racism—of how it feels to walk through the world seen as something to be feared. Deeply moving and profoundly beautiful, ‘Black Boys’ serves as a rare glimpse into the emotional landscape of Black men and boys, illuminating their full humanity, vulnerability and resilience.

More info on the film can be found via Variety HERE.

In October of last year Harper released the new album Winter Is For Lovers, a record that is in many ways a culmination of Harper’s entire musical life. The intimate and ambitious solo recording is his first-ever entirely instrumental project, comprised of 15 original compositions that seamlessly flow together, imagined as a symphony for guitar.

Watch just Ben and his Monteleone lap steel guitar perform Winter Is For Lovers in its entirety at The Folk Music Centre, the famous music shop that his grandparents opened in the late 1950s in Claremont, CA, HERE.

The music heard on Winter Is For Lovers is deeply ingrained in Harper’s DNA and leads directly back to aforementioned Folk Music Centre. The shop and community centre has hosted music legends of all stripes, many of which Ben met while working there. Some of the album’s many musical inspirations were visitors, including John Fahey, the godfather of the American Primitive movement, slide guitar master Taj Mahal, who Ben would later study with, plus the likes of Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne and more.

NOFX ANNOUNCE NEW FULL-LENGTH, SINGLE ALBUM

WATCH: AVENGED SEVENFOLD, AND MORE, IN NOFX’S NEW VIDEO FOR THEIR FIRST SINGLE, “LINEWLEUM”

SINGLE ALBUM OUT FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26
VIA FAT WRECK CHORDS

Fat Wreck Chords and longstanding California punk band NOFX are excited to announce Single Album, the band’s 14th full-length album, due out on Friday, February 26. Boasting 12 new tracks and recorded at Motor Studios in San Francisco with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Teenage Bottlerocket), Single Album is their most personal album to date.

Check out the new video for the lead single “Linewleum,” and get the nitty gritty from the fat one himself:

“I have no idea why “Linoleum” is THE NOFX song that is covered by so many bands while other NOFX songs get hardly any attention. “Linoleum” wasn’t a single, it had no video, it got no radio play, and most importantly, it didn’t even have a chorus!!! All popular songs have choruses! WTF! So, One night I stayed up till 4:00 am checking out all the different versions on YouTube. Watching hundreds of bands from over 28 countries (mostly Indonesia) doing “Linoleum” was a humbling experience for me. So I decided to write a song that was a shout out to all those people that learned those four chords and remembered the non-rhyming lyrics. Then I asked the biggest of all the bands (Avenged Sevenfold) to play some leads on the song. Then M Shadows suggested we do a video together. Then I figured I should put all of the bands in the video. Well, I couldn’t fit all the bands, but I picked a bunch of cool ones! A song about not playing a song that’s not a hit song with a video about other bands covering the song! This is why I love punk rock writing punk songs. Rules out the door!”

Nearly 40 years in, what else is there to say about NOFX?

And aside from the occasional negative headline, how can one of the pioneers of SoCal punk—a style hardly known for experimentation—surprise anyone these days?

The answers lie on Single Album (Fat Wreck Chords, Feb. 26), NOFX’s 14th full-length studio album. There’s the nearly six-minute post-hardcore opener (“The Big Drag”). The meta sendoff for the band’s best-known song (“Linewleum”). The reggae-inflected song about a mass shooting (“Fish in a Gun Barrel”). Even a piano ballad (“Your Last Resort”).

It is, as frontman and bassist Fat Mike repeatedly describes, “a dark album.” That wasn’t the original intent. By early 2020, NOFX—which includes guitarist El Hefe, guitarist Eric Melvin, and drummer Smelly—had written and recorded enough songs for a planned double album to be released that fall. Like so much about 2020, those plans changed.

“When you write a double album, you write differently,” Mike says. “I was writing really different songs, and some fun songs, but you have to make a double album interesting enough to listen to the whole way. I wanted to make a perfect double album, and I didn’t accomplish that. So I decided to just make a single album, hence the title.”

Recorded at Motor Studios in San Francisco with Bill Stevenson and Jason Livermore (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Teenage Bottlerocket), Single Album pares down the roughly 23 songs NOFX tracked. “I just kept adding songs,” Mike says. “I was maybe a little out of my mind.”

How so? “I was pretty high on drugs that year,” he adds. While fans may wonder what else is new, Single Albumcasts the frontman’s habits in a surprisingly harsh light. While “Grieve Soto” eulogises beloved Adolescents founder Steve Soto, it takes a meta turn when Eric Melvin warns Mike to be “cautious, more respectful, less obnoxious.”“Birmingham” has what people in recovery call “a moment of clarity,” when he realised he was an addict.

“That was a clarity moment in my life when I was by myself, and the sun’s coming up, and I’m scraping cocaine off the floor, like, ‘Eww, gross. I shouldn’t be doing this,’” Mike says. “So what did I do? I ordered more.” After being hospitalised with a bleeding ulcer—a terrifying experience that caused him to vomit blood—Mike entered rehab in fall 2020. He promptly wrote another new album while there and has been sober since.

Unsurprisingly, Single Album represents his most personal work to date. Heartbreak permeates “I Love You More Than I Hate Me” and “Your Last Resort.” “Fuck Euphemism” dives into Mike’s sexuality for a “pronoun bar fight.” “Doors and Fours” is a grim look into the early ’80s LA punk scene, when dozens of people—many of them Mike’s friends—overdosed on a prescription drug combo. “The Big Drag” is a personal vow to make the most of life, even when it undeniably sucks. “It’s one of my favourite NOFX songs ever. I don’t get sick of listening to that song,” Mike says of “The Big Drag.” “No measure is the same length. Every time a new chord change happens, there’s a different rhythm to the guitar. The bass never stays on one note. You’re not sure when the chords are going to change because they always change at a different point.”

In other words, it’s unpredictable—just like NOFX. Turns out there is a lot to say about them, even after all this time.

Fat Wreck Chords will release Single Album on Feb. 26, 2021.

TEENAGE KICKS AT BURLEIGH BAZAAR ANNOUNCE STACKED LINEUP FOR MINI-FEST ON THE GOLD COAST

by the partae January 13, 2021
written by the partae

Gold Coast –  Get on this!  The team behind Best Night Ever have pulled a bunch of rad bands together for a mid-summer Sunday Session mini-fest to present Teenage Kicks at Burleigh Bazaar on Sunday 7 February.

Spending 2020 slow-cooking a flavoursome psych-rock stew, Brisbane’s’ Nice Biscuit, return to the Goldy with their new single ‘Fem Chem’, and a new EP titled “Create Simulate” due to satisfy your hungry ears in early 2021.
Electrifying and cinematic, expect a colourful sonic and visual show featuring out of this world costumes and a genre-bending repertoire of songs from this DIY psych-garage collective.

Joining them on the drive down the M1 from Brisvegas, Concrete Surfers are a Brisbane band to the core and create a unique blend of garage-rock and pop. Their distinctive sound and energetic live performance have created a fast-moving trajectory for the group of four and 2020 saw the release of the song ‘Never Understood’ – a track that was produced by Fletcher Matthews (Dear Seattle, Sweater Curse, CLEWS, Fritz).

Hailing from the nation’s capital to make their first-ever Gold Coast appearance Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers are a band of four nineteen year old gals with a penchant for plaid and a knack for crafting gritty, nostalgic grunge pop.
Their 2019 breakout single, the alt-rock infused ‘I Like That You Like That’, showcased a darker and more mature evolution of sound for the four-piece, and was followed up by  ‘See You In A Bit (I Still Care)’ – a tenacious and honest ode to love-hate relationships. With a whole lot of love for both each other and their audiences, and a whole lot more in store, Teen Jesus & the Jean Teasers are a name you need to know.

Since Teenage Joans first burst onto the stage only one year ago, they have left every room they play full of brand new and soon-to-be long-time fans. This year the triumphant indie/pop-punk two-piece took home the crown as triple j Unearthed High winners of 2020 and aren’t planning on slowing down anytime soon. Cahli and Tahlia have a lot to say and they are going to say it, you are going to listen, and nobody is going to stand in their way.

Coming in hot from Jervis Bay, NSW, Debbies are a two-piece rock band with a sound that combines those summery slacker vibes with upbeat hard-hitting rock melodies. The band have fast become one of the most buzzed-about new names in Australian rock music after being named one of the five triple j Unearthed High finalists for 2019.

Looking for all-female, all punk rock, all the time? You can’t go past the 5 piece powerhouse of Being Jane Lane! Dropping catchy punk rock tunes with attitude, if you haven’t yet jumped on the Being Jane Lane bandwagon, now is a damn good time to do so.

To join the other ladies on stage, will also be Gold Coast local Lily Papas. The singer-songwriter has been known with her introspective indie pop, noting musical influencers from Florence & The Machine, Lana Del Rey, London Grammar and David Bowie.

Tickets are now on sale via Oztix and is a 16+ event.

“Mellow, magnetic album is among their best work.” – Evening Standard (Album of the Week, ★★★★)

“A marvellously-produced album that jumps out of the speakers, brimming with confidence and dripping with arena-sized existential anthems.” – Loud And Quiet, 8/10

“Sumptuous.” – Uncut, 8/10

“Existential bangers from Baltimore’s most eccentric band.” – NME, ★★★★

“This album feels like the next step in their story, with more deeply felt New Romantic intensity than ever.” – Rolling Stone

Today, Future Islands release ‘For Sure (Dan Deacon Remix)’, an expansive 9-minute remix from the fellow Baltimorean artist where he incorporates stirring strings, piano and an electronic crescendo to the original track.

Dan Deacon says, “Like most people, the last year has made me realise how important my friends are to me, and how much I miss being with them. When the guys released ‘For Sure’, it really brought me back to memories of when we lived together and I could hear them practicing in the basement. I kept listening to it over and over and wanted to hear it “more,” if that makes sense. I wanted to hear the individual parts, and I wanted to hang out with them and interact with them. When I got the stems I didn’t really have a plan for the remix other than I wanted to hear Sam’s voice with piano and strings, and it just started growing from there in an organic way. It was a comforting project that brought me close to people I love and missed very much. One of my favourite things about being a musician are the friendships and bonds that are made through it. It’s hard to imagine my life, let alone my music, without having met these bozos.”

Last night, Future Islands brought their renowned incendiary live performance to the screen when they performed their latest single ‘Plastic Beach’ on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Watch it HERE. In 2020, the band performed lead single ‘For Sure’ on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and Ellen.

As Long As You Are, Future Islands sixth studio album, looks to the past as well as the future, confronting old ghosts and embracing a new hope. It is an album about trust, full of honesty, redemption and “letting go”, allowing old wounds to heal and bringing painful chapters to a close. The album features singles ‘Born In A War’, ‘Moonlight’, ‘Thrill’ and ‘For Sure’. Signalling a new era for Future Islands, touring drummer Mike Lowry officially joins as a fully-fledged member and songwriter bolstering the founding trio of William Cashion, Samuel T. Herring and Gerrit Welmers. Together, the four-piece took on official production duties for the first time, co-producing As Long As You Are with engineer Steve Wright at his Wrightway Studios in Baltimore. Given time to allow the songs to slowly come to life, these 11 new songs of post wave synth-pop are as euphoric and uninhibitedly joyful as anything the band has done in their 14-year career.

As Long As You Are is now available digitally, on CD, standard black vinyl, petrol blue vinyl (4AD and indie stores only), fluorescent orange vinyl (band store only) and cassette (4AD Store, band store and US indies only). To listen and order, head to futureislands.ffm.to/aslongasyouare.

Following the recent release of his new album Sensationalized, Sydney-based artist Wade Jackson shares the accompanying video to his lead single 'Nightlife'. The visuals come ahead of Jackson's album launch at Sydney's Moshpit this Thursday 14 January, with special guests and Broke Stone Records' label mates Lewis Goldmark & Magnetic Heads. The album launch will also be live streamed on Thursday 14 January at 8PM AEDT via Zenn. Live stream passes are on sale now here. Jackson began predominantly worked in music theatre and writing screen plays. Given things weren’t going so well he decided to use his musical chops to write his debut album Goodbye Rain, Hello Sunshine in 2012 which he later recorded with producer Liam Judson (Belles Will Ring, Cloud Control to Major Tom, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Dream). Touring Australia widely, he took a break to write Whiskey Alpha Delta Echo in the fall of 2013, again co-producing with Judson. The album was picked up on a licensing deal from a Spanish label generating a European tour. After returning from Europe, with wind in his sails and sales he started work on the follow-up, Crown & Cathedral which unfortunately was disliked immensely by his Spanish fan base citing “there’s too much synthesiser”, a mistake that Jackson did not learn from and continued to use on the follow up album, The Ghost Searches Beside Me. The LP was recorded and mixed by Jackson with his new set of skills he was forced to learn after going broke from investing all of his money into a music documentary he made with friend and well known Australian band manager and industry stalwart, Greg Carey. Waiting - The Van Duren Story was screened around the world and well received. Now, Broken Stone Records are thrilled to have released Jackson's fifth album titled Sensationalized.  As Jackson details of the album "Sensationalized was written and recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown in Sydney. The theme is based around a fictional complete city breakdown, exaggerated reality. An almost apocalyptic, dystopian city with different scenarios played out by different characters in a diary/self reflection style. This was also reflected in the music I was listening to: Joe Walsh - Barnstorm, Joni Mitchell - Hejira, Lewis Baloue - L’amour, Peter Koppes - Manchild or Myth. All these records for me have a real reclusive feel and felt comforting whilst alone during lockdown." Lewis Goldmark is the new project from Belles Will Ring frontman, Liam Judson. This time we have chilly guitars, glowing synths, along with Judsons' unique melodicism all coming together to form dystopian lullabies. Magnetic Heads is the multi-member project of JD Miller. Once upon a time a collection of jangling 12 string pop ballads, now songs about game theory and coming of age, the loss of youth and the power of community delivered with a straight face and a brutalist cold wave aesthetic. SLEAFORD MODS Share new single & video ‘Nudge It (ft. Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers)’ Announce ‘SMtv’ Spare Ribs Special TV show New album Spare Ribs out this Friday!

Praise for Sleaford Mods

“Catchy melodies juxtaposed with crass and expletive-laden lyrics… It’s a tireless takedown of privileged politicians living in luxury as the country falls further into poverty, and sums up what Sleaford Mods do.” – Loud & Quiet

“An urgent, precise takedown of Britain’s ugly sub-conscious… their sharpness and humour are as strong as ever.” – CLASH

“…his richly detailed, brutally succinct lyrics are like weapons of mass verbal destruction.” – Sunday Times Culture

“Nudge It is grubby, dangerous, and perfectly pissed off” – Guardian Guide

Following their latest singles ‘Shortcummings’ and ‘Mork n Mindy ft. Billy Nomates’, today Nottingham-based duo Sleaford Mods release new single & video ‘Nudge It (ft Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers)’. The single comes ahead of the release of their highly-anticipated sixth studio album Spare Ribs out this Friday 15 January via Rough Trade / Remote Control Records.

Of the new single, the band’s Jason Williamson says “Imagine you’ve got limited options, unsure how you’re getting by that week, looking out the window of the damp flat you don’t want to live in, and seeing a bunch of posers having a photo shoot because ‘cool architecture bro, we feel your pain’.

Reduced circumstance isn’t a pantomime. If you haven’t lived within its confines don’t use it to enamour your ideas. It confuses the platform for those that truly live it and more often than not buries creative breakthroughs because the arena is polluted by the view of their world through someone else’s privileged lens. So beware the eager networkers, don’t settle for the 20p pay-out, nudge it, pop the posers. And don’t apologise for the fucker either.”

‘Nudge It’ partners Williamson’s trademark lyrical wit with the energetic and unmistakeable vocals of Amy Taylor from Australian punk-rock band Amyl and the Sniffers. The polemical Williamson and dexterous producer Andrew Fearn kick against the pricks with unrivalled bite, railing against hypocrisy, inequality and apathy with their inimitable, scabrous sense of humour.  New album Spare Ribs finds the duo charged with ire at the UK Government’s sense of entitlement, epitomised by its devil-may-care approach to the coronavirus crisis.

Sleaford Mods have created a one-hour ‘SMtv’ Spare Ribs Special TV show. The programme features interviews with the band and album collaborators Billy Nomates and Amy Taylor, alongside live footage from their unforgettable 100 Club livestream plus cameos from special guests including John Thomson, Robbie Williams, Iggy Pop and more. ‘SMtv’ will be broadcast at 7AM AEDT on Sunday 17th January on the band’s YouTube channel.
