The sell-out success, Synthony, returns to Brisbane for a ‘One Night Only’ epic outdoor show at Riverstage on Saturday 29th May! The ultimate celebration of the last 30 years of dance music, Synthony is a unique collaboration between Orchestra, DJs, live vocalists and feature musicians.   After a hugely success 2019 show at Brisbane City Hall, the super-charged and energetic Synthony will return to showcase a brand-new set list featuring the biggest dance anthems from icons such as: Avicii, Eric Prydz, Fatboy Slim and Basement Jaxx to name just a few, backed with the full might of a 60+ piece Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra.  The show is stacked with iconic stars from across the Australian music spectrum playing their global hits including: Miss Connie (Sneaky Sound System), Ilan Kidron (The Potbelleez), Mobin Master, Greg Gould, Ella Monnery, Andy Van (Madison Avenue / Vicious Records) and Mark Dynamix. With an epic backdrop of visuals, lasers and a state-of-the-art sound system, it’s a magical, uplifting, hands-in-the-air dance party like no other.  An energetic show from the outset, this is not an orchestra as you know it.  This celebration of dance music is more than just a show, it takes the audience on a nostalgic journey back through their most memorable dance music experiences.  Track after track, fans are taken down memory lane and celebrate dance music that is embedded into their subconscious.   Synthony's New Zealand shows (since 2017) have been attended by ‘Sold Out’ audiences (as well as its Brisbane debut in 2019).  After successful shows across New Zealand over the last few months, including a sold-out show at Spark Arena, (Auckland) and the orchestral extravaganza’s first outdoor show at the magical natural Amphitheatre of the ‘Bowl of Brooklands’ (New Plymouth), the tour hits the soon to be sold out Melbourne show at the famous Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Synthony Australia will include some of Australia’s dance music’s favourite artists, who are also behind some massive hits, such as: Miss Connie (Sneaky Sound System) – ‘Pictures,’ ‘I Love It,’ ‘UFO,’ ‘Kansas City’ and more.. Ilan Kidron (The Potbelleez) – ‘Don’t Hold Back,’ ‘Hello,’ ‘Junkyard’ and more..  Greg Gould, Ella Monnery + more to be announced.. We dipped out toe in the water staging the event at City Hall in 2019 and following great reviews we can’t wait to go bigger and better outdoors at the stunning Riverstage. The show will be run in a government approved, Covid-safe set up at Riverstage. Whilst the venue normally can hold over 9,000 people, tickets will be capped at 4,000 due to capacity restrictions. The Synthony Australian Tour has only been possible thanks to the support of the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative. “We certainly would not be putting on this show without the RISE funding support from the Australian Government.  This partnership has given us the confidence to invest, take risk and put on events that will see some artists and suppliers secure their first job and income after a very long break in event activity” said Carroll. Decibel Open Air shares full lineup for 2021 edition in September with Marco Carola, Nina Kraviz and more

Decibel Open Air reveals the full line-up for the 2021 edition, taking place on the 11th and 12th September in Cascine Park in Florence, Italy.

New names include Marco Carola, Nina Kraviz, Peggy Gou, Mathame, Stephan Jolk, T78, Brina Knauss, Marc Maya, Viviana Casanova, Toni Varga, Pôngo and Mattia Trani, while the most crazy and colourful party in all the world, elrow, will also be at Decibel Open Air with a very exclusive stage of their own.

There is a whiff of optimism in the air as the festival world sets its sights on a huge rebirth in late summer and adding to that hope that we can return to some sort of normality is the news that Italian heavyweight Decibel Open Air is back.
This famous event has two stages across two days at a massive outdoor space in Italy with all the beautiful food and extra stuff that you would expect. Of course, the people will be just as cool and cultured as the line up and the green space welcomes this final wave of names after the first one in December when Paul Kalkbrenner (live), 999999999 (live), Amelie Lens, Ben Klock, Fisher, Gioli & Assia (live), Giorgia Angiuli (live), Kölsch, Michael Bibi, Pan-Pot, Reinier Zonneveld (live), Richie Hawtin and Wade were all announced.

The Italian techno titan, Marco Carola, is one of the biggest names in the electronic scene. He’s head of Music On, one of the most loved parties in Ibiza and in the world. He is joined by undisputed talent, Nina Kraviz, a DJ, producer, songwriter and vocalist who has her own acid techno sound. Since 2014 she has been running the трип record label, a real hub for new talents and undiscovered music. Next up, through a regular stream of high quality mixes Peggy Gou has become a real star of the underground with her sets across the world filled with colourful house, disco and techno and plenty of personality.
Add in further names like Mathame, Stephan Jolk, T78, Brina Knauss, Marc Maya, Viviana Casanova, Toni Varga, Pôngo and Mattia Trani and you have a much-anticipated event that will be fantastic time of celebration for all music lovers.

Tanaya Harper releases Tender is the Night, VOL1 with all proceeds being donated to aid the Perth Bushfire Victims

by the partae February 10, 2021
written by the partae

Tender is the Night was created by Leigh Gardiner, Rohin Best and Ruby Smedley in Perth, WA as a response to COVID19 when many classical musicians and composers lost the majority of their work for the upcoming year in 2020.

As one of Perth’s leading songwriters, Tanaya Harper was invited to perform an intimate Wembley backyard show which was held and recorded on Noongar boodjar land in the first weekend of Spring 2020 post-lockdown. The very special series was in support of and giving opportunities for composers and classical musicians to work again as well as highlighting the songwriting of West Australian original artists to the unique backdrop of a string quartet.

Tanaya has a stunning voice and poignant lyrics, which meant she was the obvious choice to launch TITN. Her lyrics are deep, sincere and relatable, and she delivered beyond expectations.” – Leigh Gardiner, Tender is the Night

Tanaya’s live recording of her favourite tracks Slow Motion Breakup, Don’t Go Outside, The Well, Dissociate, The Dark I Love and Graceless makeup Tender is the Night, VOL1, with Tanaya donating 100% of proceeds from sales of the Bandcamp digital sales to assist Perth Bushfire victims.

“At first I didn’t quite understand what Leigh was asking me to do, or how special this event would be. There weren’t any rehearsals – only a soundcheck, so I was really nervous about that. Then, I vividly remember being completely overwhelmed during the opening song because that was when I finally realised what was happening, that I was playing this once-in-a-lifetime gig with four incredible women.

These live recordings have been ready to release for a little while but I didn’t know when would be the right time. Once I learnt of the scale of destruction from the Wooroloo bushfires I decided I’d like to donate all proceeds from Bandcamp downloads towards assisting those who’ve been affected.” – Tanaya Harper

Perth raised, LA based producer and vocalist KUČKA announces the feverishly anticipated release of her debut album Wrestling, out April 30 via Soothsayer/LuckyMe. The news comes with the release of her latest single ‘No Good For Me‘, premiered last night via Good Nights on triple j. Listen HERE.

‘No Good For Me‘ signals more for KUČKA than a relationship breakdown in Wrestling’s narrative arc. Breaking momentarily with the elements of fantasy that have come to be synonymous with her music, the single catches KUČKA bracing herself. “I’m hungry for progress,” she sings over garage house percussion that thumps like a heartbeat. Piecing together her previous releases ‘Drowning‘, ‘Real‘, ‘Contemplation‘ and ‘Ascension‘, which have each received playlist support from triple j, FBi Radio, RAGE and MTV; ‘No Good For Me‘ begs, “How long can you run for?”

Of the single and her upcoming record, KUČKA shares: “No Good For Me is a song about letting go of people who don’t vibe you up. Writing No Good For Me was about capturing the energy of psyching yourself up to deal with that conflict.”

The project of Laura Jane Lowther, Wrestling is a record about young adulthood, finding yourself and meeting your soulmate along the way. Like Christine and the Queens, Caribou and Charli XCX’s most earnest moments, KUČKA documents her metamorphosis through her unique brand of “digital soul”. From ending a long-term relationship, moving cross-continentally, coming out, getting married and all the emotions felt in between, Wrestling illustrates that journey, processed, celebrated and soothed through dance driven electronica, ethereal vocals and glitchy textures. In turning to writing for catharsis, the album is also a moving dedication to Laura’s partner and Wrestling’s creative director Dillon Howl, who without which the record’s release would not be possible.

Written, produced and recorded by herself, Lowther’s natural ability for conjuring earworm melodies are on full display. As a trained musician, Laura has steadily worked over the years to establish herself as a sought after producer and vocalist. Her list of achievements are endless, having already worked with A$AP Rocky, on ‘Fashion Killa‘, Flume and SOPHIE on the GRAMMY Nominated ‘Voices‘, Vince Staples, Fetty Wap, Kendrick Lamar, Vegyn, Nosaj Thing, Cosmos Midnight and many more. With her steady and selective recent output drawing praise from the FADER, Fact Magazine, Clash Music, NME, Earmilk, Flaunt and more alongside playlist additions from triple j, Rinse FM, FBi Radio and more, today KUČKA stands tall on her own, ready to welcome us into her world.

‘No Good For Me‘ is out now via Soothsayer/LuckyMe, buy/stream it here.

VERA BLUE + THE SMITH STREET BAND ANNOUNCED AS FIRST ARTISTS FOR ‘STRINGS ATTACHED’ CONCERT SERIES WITH BRISBANE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

by the partae February 10, 2021
written by the partae

The Fortitude Music Hall & Brisbane Symphony Orchestra (BSO) are excited to reveal today the series’ first two performances with contemporary acts, Vera Blue and The Smith Street Band for Strings Attached.

Kicking off the first show is lyrical singer-songwriter and ARIA-nominated artist Vera Blue, known for her ethereal stage presence and soaring vocals. Playing on Friday 26th March the set will combine Vera’s folk-tinged moody electronica with traditional string accompaniment from the BSO, and The Fortitude Music Hall’s grand acoustics.

The Brisbane Symphony Orchestra will be led by Conductor Emeritus Antoni Bonetti, the Orchestra conductor and violinist. Antoni Bonetti says, “What an honour and privilege to support the Wonderful Voice of Vera Blue, with her songs of magic and charisma.

The Smith Street Band will also play with BSO, on Saturday 22nd May. Starting their 2021 returning to the stage after their fifth studio album ‘Don’t Waste Your Anger’ debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album Charts. The Melbourne band will bring to the stage their high energy, rhythmic guitars and trademark vocals, fusing string orchestra with contemporary rock, to create a unique musical experience.

The Smith Street Band’s leading man, Wil Wagner tells us, “Ever since I heard Smashing Pumpkins’ orchestral rock classic ‘Tonight, Tonight’ I’ve always dreamt of getting the chance to play with a symphony orchestra! The way the strings and horns blend with distorted guitars and yelled vocals is exciting and unique and very powerful! I can’t wait to hear the timpanis double floor toms, the cellos under distorted bass and the wall of noise made by our guitars and the orchestra’s strings! These shows are gonna be very special, Brisbane we cannot wait!”

Strings Attached was made possible via the support from the Federal Government’s RISE Grant initiative. Federal Member of Brisbane Trevor Evans says, “All of us around Brisbane as consumers of performing arts love the idea that we can get back into seeing and hearing great performances in the year ahead”.

Venue Co-Owner and ex-basisst of Powderfinger, John ‘JC’ Collins adds: “As a musician, if it was our day, we would have jumped at the chance to play with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra. From the venue’s point of view, it’s very exciting to see some music back in here. From the federal government, the support we’ve had has been very important and significant, and it means that it’s going to be a long recovery for the industry. We’re all very excited to come here to see some good contemporary artists play alongside the orchestra”.

Don’t miss out on a fantastic opportunity uniting traditional and contemporary music at Brisbane’s premier music venue, The Fortitude Music Hall for a grand and unforgettable experience.

PRAISE FOR HACHIKU

“‘I’ll Probably Be Asleep’ is a potent slice of escapist guitar pop with a literate feel.” – CLASH

“The title track also provides a rare moment of instrumental unrest on an album that’s otherwise full of dewy dream-pop brimming with shimmering keyboards and intimate vocals.”
– Bandcamp Daily, Album of the Day

“On ‘I’ll Probably Be Asleep’ even the topics usually regulated to inflammatory newspaper op-eds take on new depth and heart.” – NME

Hachiku are excited to finally announce a tour of Victoria and New South Wales to celebrate the release of their acclaimed debut album I’ll Probably Be Asleep. The tour includes Melbourne album launches as part of the Brunswick Music Festival (the first of which is already sold out) as well as reaching many regional areas – tickets are available now here.

To celebrate the tour announcement, Hachiku have released a live video for album favourite ‘Busy Being Boring’. The video is part of the Live in the Forest performance that was originally screened on New York’s BabyTV in December. The full length performance, which was directed by Melbourne and long term Hachiku collaborator Marcelle Bradbeer, will be released in full on YouTube on March 10th.

Hachiku band-leader Anika Ostendorf says of Live in the Forest performance, “Releasing our debut album last November in the middle of a global pandemic meant that for obvious reasons we weren’t able to play a launch show full of sweaty people, soaked in beer, crowd surfing their way through venues. Instead we opted for the calming alternative – set up our instruments in a forest and play our songs to the birds, platypus and definitely a couple of snakes. Even our guitarist Georgia managed to make an appearance via satellite TV. We are pretty excited and grateful that we do get to play some real life shows after all and can’t wait to experience a socially distanced mosh pit.”

Director Bradbeer said, “I’m usually a landscape photographer and this was my first time directing and filming a video. I wanted to incorporate my usual practice & fascination with nature as a landscape photographer – particularly in a time when people are isolated from the natural environment and stuck indoors. In lockdown I had a lot of time to think about humanity’s impact on the world despite every individual being so small, almost insignificant in the grander context. My drone was perfect at capturing the vast magnitude of the environment around where my mother lives- which is on the traditional land of the Dja Dja Wurrung.”

JACK BOTTS RELEASES STUNNING ’18TH FLOOR’ ACOUSTIC VERSION + 38-DATE HEADLINE AUSTRALIAN NEAR-SOLD OUT

by the partae February 10, 2021
written by the partae

Rising Australian singer-songwriter Jack Botts returns with his latest single release, ‘18th Floor (Acoustic)‘. It comes after the whirlwind response to the original ’18th Floor’ in November 2020, which spawned tirple j play and Unearthed rotation and a whopping 38-date Australian headline tour with limited tickets remaining.

Where the original ’18th Floor’ is packed with movement and flow, ’18th Floor (Acoustic)’ offers a stunning pared back take. Thematically, the track finds Botts digesting the highs and hurdles of his long distance relationship and the pressure it endured with COVID restrictions.

He shares: “What you are hearing in the acoustic version is ’18th Floor’ in its original form. How it was written, stripped back, key change, and mellow. In a way, this is the original version.”

Jack Botts continues his 18th Floor Australian Headline Tour across the country throughout February and March, after a stack of sold out shows in Canberra, TAS and a stint down the coast last month as well as a sold out night at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club. More details on the remaining shows and tickets below.

STREAM ’18TH FLOOR (ACOUSTIC)’ NOW:
jackbotts.lnk.to/18thflooracoustic

From beginnings busking in Byron, to countless sold out headline shows and festival appearance across the country, Jack Botts has arguably become one of the Australia’s fastest rising songwriters under the radar.

Though 2020 had its hurdles, Botts took it in his stride and played over 30 COVID-safe shows in his native QLD and second home on the Northern Rivers of NSW, as well as debuting on the arena stage with a set at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena alongside the likes of Ocean Alley, Jack River & Ruby Fields.

Built on an authentic and no-frills approach to life and music, the twenty three year-old has swiftly built a fanbase spanning over 260,000 Monthly Spotify listeners and over 12 Million catalogue streams in just a few short years.

Jack Botts releases independently and distributed via UNIFIED Music Group.

GUTHRIE unveils evocative new single 'QUEENSTOWN'

GUTHRIE unveils evocative new single ‘QUEENSTOWN’

by the partae February 10, 2021
written by the partae

Hailing from Melbourne, Tess Guthrie has developed her own unique blend of folk and alt/rock, and today she unveils ‘Queenstown’ – the first track under the new moniker GUTHRIE.

‘Queenstown’ had a dream team bringing it to life. The emotive track was produced by Sophie Payten (Gordi) with mixing from Alexander O’Gorman (Angie McMahon) and Isaac Barter mastering.

GUTHRIE commenting on working with Sophie Payten (Gordi) says “Making this track with Sophie was certainly one of the things keeping me sane during lockdown, and I think something about that isolation period also allowed me to reimagine what I wanted the project to be like. So I’m absolutely stoked to be able to share it with people now.”

‘Queenstown’ explores the ideas of escapism, acting on impulse, reality vs fantasy, and above all – the importance of being fulfilled.

“In the pre-covid times, I was driving to uni one day and feeling pretty trapped. A thought hit me really hard – ‘what’s really keeping me here?’. It felt important and I wanted to see how far that rabbit hole went. A few hours later I was on pretty much the first international flight I could get – to New Zealand.

It was utterly beautiful and helped me question some assumptions about my priorities and the importance of being happy. Of course when I got back my life was the same as I’d left it, and it would take much more work to integrate that sense of freedom into my everyday life.

So for me the song is kind of bitter-sweet and escapist. I think it maps nicely onto the story of a relationship that you wish was working, but it’s not. And deep down you know that the relationship would only work out in a fantasy world, which is nice to visit but you can’t stay there. You have to fly back home and deal with your reality, but doing the work and building a life you don’t have to escape from is totally worth it”
GUTHRIE

GUTHRIE’S music is a pure reflection of her diverse experiences and sonic influences.  She spent 2019 touring the East Coast of Australia bewitching audiences with her mesmerizing vocals after releasing Triple j Unearthed favourites ‘WUTO’ and ‘Fairy Lights’.

Like all musicians in 2020, GUTHRIE’S touring plans were put on hold and she reassessed her music, and identity changing her name from Tess Guthrie to GUTHRIE.

“Particularly during lockdown I found myself becoming more keen on production and combining electronic elements with the folk/alt-rock sound that I’ve always loved. It felt more natural to explore these new sounds and new ways of writing and playing with the band under a new project name. That’s why I went with GUTHRIE, because it’s still my name and feels like me, but it also allows me to build a world for the music to live in which is different to just me as a person. I think we’ll be able to express more as a band if the sounds have that freedom to live in their own world.”
GUTHRIE

PRAISE FOR GUTHRIE

Re QUEENSTOWN: “It’s a tender and intimate ballad-like track in-line with much of her past work, but this time around, it flourishes with the added layering of electronica, which in a way deepens the dense, almost-suffocating sound that the song moves amongst; the rich layers all dancing amongst each other in a way that feels light and listenable, but suggests something deeper lurking underneath the surface.”

PILERATS

“Compelling, deeper vocals. It keeps you drawn. For fans of Angie McMahon and Didirri for sure. Gorgeous.”

Claire Mooney, Triple J Unearthed

“Starts off on that skinny love tip, morphs into a spitting campfire” [re: WUTO]

Max Quinn, Triple J

“An artist who has been requested so much on the text line… I think she’s made this really beautiful blend between that kind of other-worldly pure voice and also just having that really brash grungy sound to her music too”

Nkechi Anele introducing ‘WUTO’ Live on Triple J

“Melbourne based Tess Guthrie’s first single “WUTO” (Were You the One?) is a killer blend of honest lyrics, raw emotion, and stunning vocals.”

The AU Review

‘Queenstown’ is released on 10th February

Soma proudly presents a label debut from one of electronic music’s most influential figures, Keith Tucker aka Optic Nerve. With a detailed discography on some of Techno & Electro’s most well-respected labels, stretching back to the 80s & 90s either via solo projects or as part of genre defining group AUX 88, Tucker has been at the forefront of the Detroit scene since his beginnings. Considered by many to be the blueprint for modern day Techno/Electro Tucker is one of the scene’s most hard-working artists devoting almost 30 years to his career as an electronic artist.  Appearing on Soma sub label, Avoidant, at the end of 2020 as DJ K-1, the opportunity to continue working together with his Optic Nerve pseudonym arose. Resulting in Soma’s 600th release, the Far Away EP. Combined with Scottish based artist Kyle Irvine’s unique Sci-Fi based artwork, Tucker has delivered a unique and modern-day outlook on his famed Detroit Techno/Electro sound.  Title track Far Away is a classic take on the seminal Detroit sound. Distant and drifting vocals glide across sweeping textures and tripped out synth sequences, glued together by deep emotive strings. Channel Z captures the classic Optic Nerve sound perfectly; pure machine funk soaked in harmonic atmospheres. The ominous Techno Programming has a darker, edgier tone to the previous tracks but by no means less emotive. A funked up, warped baseline sets the tone backed by jacked up drums as the track exudes pure attitude. Fellow Detroit based artist Strand drops a remix of Techno Programming to close out the EP. Their version leans on more melancholic elements but retains the feel and demeanour of the original.

The Live, Loud and Local series aims to support Australia’s hospitality and entertainment industries as well as the local communities hit hard by COVID-19 and related social gathering restrictions.

Melanie Cooper, Coopers Brewery Director and fifth generation family member, said the brewery wanted to build on the momentum generated by its initial Live, Loud and Local series which became Australia’s biggest virtual pub experience during the national lockdown.

“Our first series was all about bringing the pub experience into Australian lounge rooms so patrons stuck at home could still enjoy a night out on the couch,” Mel said.

“Now we want to help bring great Australian live music back to the stage and encourage people off the couch and into their local pub.

“It’s been a really challenging time for venues, musicians and patrons. Live music is an essential part of our culture as is heading to the local for a social drink with friends. It’s something we’ve all missed. We’re putting together a great series of gigs that will allow fans the chance to see their favourite bands perform live again and support local venues in a socially responsible way.”

Live Nation’s President of Brand and Marketing Partnerships for Australia and New Zealand, Greg Segal said Live Nation was excited to be working with Coopers again.

“Coopers is demonstrating a real commitment to supporting local artists and venues, via the Live, Loud and Local series. The industry couldn’t ask for a better partner during these challenging times,” Greg said.

Miles Wilson, the drummer of Bad//Dreems, said the band was pumped to be playing the Live, Loud and Local series in Adelaide.

“Like an early Elliott Smith song, 2020 has been sad and haunting,” Miles said.

“We’ve really missed the atmosphere of playing live and we’ll be approaching the gig with a sense of anticipation and fantasy.”

Trent Fahey, Operations Manager, The Bridgeway Hotel said the venue was looking forward to the resurgence of live music in 2021.

“The Bridgeway is a South Australian rock n’ roll institution, with more than 50 years of live music history and some of the biggest national and international artists having hit our stage,” Trent said.

“South Australians love live music and have supported us on every step of the road back.

“Coopers has been outstanding in supporting us through these tough times and now the opportunity to host a Coopers Live, Loud and Local gig is truly awesome. Bad Dreems at The Bridgeway will be going up on our Legends Wall, for sure.”

CLOSE COUNTERS REVEAL BROKEN-BEAT SINGLE ‘SPEAK IN TRUTH’ FEATURING ALLYSHA JOY

by the partae February 10, 2021

SUPPORT FOR PREVIOUS SINGLE ‘UP AND OUT’

“Sublime, sun-drenched.”
– XLR8R (UK)

“It’s another soulful cut of disco-laced dance music, showcasing the uplifting, euphoric vibes we’ve come to love from the pair.”
– Purple Sneakers (AUS)

“Close Counters know their sound inside and out. It’s dance music that feels authentically warm and human. I can’t help but get a euphoric contact rush from this new track.”
– Dave Ruby Howe – triple j Unearthed (AUS)

Added to rotation on Double J

Melbourne based production duo Close Counters follow up their ‘UP AND OUT‘ single (which was championed by Bradley Zero, XLR8R & NME), teaming up with renowned vocalist (and Gondwana & First Word Records) signee Allysha Joy for their high energy new single ‘SPEAK IN TRUTH‘.

With a knack for flow and re-inventing, the past 12 months has seen Close Counters turn in remixes for the likes of Young Franco & Denzel Curry, Bag Raiders (which was premiered by Phil Taggart on BBC Radio 1), ZFEX, as well as fellow Melbourne natives 30/70 Collective (on Rhythm Section).

‘SPEAK IN TRUTH’ sees 30/70’s Allysha Joy step to the microphone, lending her ethereal and mystic tones to the track’s rich sonics. ‘SPEAK IN TRUTH’ sees the production duo (composed of Finn Rees and Allan McConnell) combining broken-beat flavours with the duo’s signature soundscape at the crossroads of house, neo-soul, hip-hop and disco.

On her inspiration for the track, Allysha explains:

“This was such a beautifully healing and fun song to write, the words came from a reminder to myself, to tell the damn truth!! After returning from an incredible European tour with 30/70 last year, I honestly felt depleted, depressed and disconnected, to put it lightly! I was so lacking in self confidence and positive energy that i had begun to really shy away from challenging conversations and writing this song was a kind of ‘get your shit together’ moment for me. I felt really disconnected to the people that I love, I felt I was protecting them by being polite or quiet or pretending to be ‘okay’. I was so afraid of the judgement; left dimming my light for the sake of other people. But wow it can be so much more damaging for ourselves and those close to us if we pretend, if we stay silent, if we don’t tell it how it is, honestly! Speaking your truth and allowing others to do the same cultivates spaces of healing and connection. We are all human, we all want connection and we all want honesty.”

After a move across the Tasman Sea a few short years ago from Hobart, the duo had expanded and enlisted a full 7-piece setup with live-percussion, woodwind and stringed instruments joining the tour de-force on stage which features dancers from their greater collective. In a relatively short spanning career, Close Counters have swept crowds supporting Sofi Tukker, Roland Tings, Tall Black Guy and their most recent East Coast headline tour of Australia saw the team continue to sell out shows with an impressive 1,100 tickets across two shows at Melbourne’s infamous The Night Cat after gracing the Meredith Music Festival stage at midnight ahead of Liam Gallagher on the billing to which the amphitheater was left heaving and punters enthralled.

In 2021, the pair have sold out all three of their Melbourne Music Week events at Colour Club, without announcing the shows to their fanbase and recently played to a packed house at the Myer Music Bowl.

Close Counters’ works have been supported by tastemakers Indie Shuffle, Giles Peterson, NME, Pilerats, EARMILK, The Sound You Need, Stoney Roads and radio crews at BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, triple j, Worldwide FM, KEXP Seattle, NTS and Balamii. All the while collecting millions of streams and cementing their status as one of Australia’s hottest house and soul exports.

‘SPEAK IN TRUTH’ is available worldwide now

PRAISE FOR YOUR HERO IS NOT DEAD

“The British songwriter’s excellent debut mines the gentle and detailed sounds of soft rock’s past, while his lucid yet uncomplicated lyrics interrogate the uncertainty of the present”
Pitchfork (8/10)

“Softly powerful alt-pop that feels like a warm hug”
The Guardian Guide“a wonderful, complex thing – quite easily one of the year’s most impressive and textured records”.
NME

“One of the year’s most beautiful albums”
Dazed

Today, Westerman shares a remix of ‘Drawbridge‘ from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. It transforms the song from a playful acoustic introduction into highly-charged, reverb-soaked psychedelia. Listen HERE.

‘Drawbridge‘ is the opener from Westerman’s debut album Your Hero Is Not Dead which came out in June last year on Play It Again Sam and Partisan in the US.

This follows the news that Westerman contributed a rework to Perfume Genius’ Immediately remix album which is set for release on Feb 19. The release includes remixes of every song on Perfume Genius’ recent album Set my Heart On Fire and as well as Westerman includes works from Actress, A.G. Cook, Jenny Hval, Nídia, Planningtorock, and more.

Westerman was asked to curate his Morning After Mix for BBC 6 music which aired over the weekend  and included picks from Amen Dunes, Beverly Glenn-Copeland, and Kurt Vile.

Your Hero Is Not Dead is a graceful and self-reflective debut album that continues Westerman’s journey from pop maverick to one of the most vital voices coming out of the UK. The project includes previously released singles, ‘The Line’, the original ‘Your Hero Is Not Dead‘, ‘Waiting on Design‘, ‘Think I’ll Stay‘ and ‘Blue Comanche‘ and is the follow-up to his critically-acclaimed Ark EP.

Towards the end of last year, he also released Choupana, a collection of early sketches from Your Hero Is Not Dead that includes the early workings of a song that was not included on the final album, ‘Above Average’, and initial versions of some of the standout tracks from the project – ‘Blue Comanche’, ‘The Line’, and ‘Think I’ll Stay’.

Find further details on his debut album Your Hero Is Not Dead, including tracklisting and cover art by renowned New York via Portugal Graphic Designer Bráulio Amado below as well as on his website westerman.world.

ARIA Award Winner Illy added to THIS THAT lineup. Festival expands with final release on sale now

by the partae February 9, 2021
written by the partae

To fill ‘the space between’ now and THIS THAT, the festival team have a bunch of exciting announcements. The first? The exciting addition of ARIA award-winning rapper Illy to the already stacked line up across both locations and a final release of tickets across both locations.

The rapper has been making waves recently with his triple j feature album, The Space Between topping the ARIA charts. Also landing in the 2020 triple j Hottest 100 at #95 with ‘Loose Ends ft. G Flip’, Illy’s popularity is as powerful on stage as it is off stage. He’s set to bring his A-game to both the Newcastle and Sandstone Point editions of the festival this October and November.

Staying true to THIS THAT’s respected brand of party starter lineups, the day will be packed to the brim with the nation’s favourite electronic, hip hop, pop and rock artists. Still making their way to both Sandstone Point (QLD) and Newcastle (NSW) are Hayden James, Crooked Colours, Dune Rats plus Mallrat and The Presets (QLD only).

With the new dates locked in and ready to roll this October and November, there are more exciting announcements lurking and ready to be revealed in the lead-up. Previously sold out, today the team release a very limited allocation of additional tickets for Newcastle with Sandstone Point still on sale and almost at capacity as well. Sadly ChillinIt and Enschway are no longer able to make the new dates announced last month, however the rest of the line up remains exactly the same with the addition of Illy and more to be announced.

EMERSON SNOWE RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘FRANKENSTEIN’ WITH VIDEO + NEW EP DUE THIS YEAR + SIGNS TO BERLIN-BASED LABEL DUCHESS BOX FOR EUROPE

by the partae February 9, 2021
written by the partae
Emerson Snowe today shares his melodic new single ‘Frankenstein’ with fans; the first taste of his forthcoming EP due later this year. News of the song comes hand in hand with a signing to Berlin-based indie label Duchess Box Records for European territories, with the track out via Liberation Records for the rest of the world.
“Frankenstein was the last track written in this soon to be released collection of songs. I wrote it in 30 minutes after a friend listened to a batch of my music and said that it had given them life.”
Premiered by Declan Byrne on triple j and Under The Radar Magazine, the self-produced song was mixed by Nicolas Vernhes (War On Drugs, Spoon, Deerhunter, Animal Collective) and is a deceptively harmonious number full of joyous horns and jangly guitars. The upbeat sonics mask a dark lyrical tone and a self-conscious sentiment. Opening with the honest line ‘Well, I felt as though I wasnʼt right in my head”, and as the singer-songwriter later chants, “Iʼve been trying to outrun everything – Iʼve been around”, the dark sense of self-actualisation within ‘Frankenstein’ becomes evident.

“I had become lost with myself and who I thought I was meant to be. Once people in your life fall away and you’re left with yourself, you can be as self-aware as you want to be – but you’re gonna realise sooner or later you have no clue who you are.

“I had moved from one addiction onto another. This track, although it was written very fast, holds a lot of weight into who I was at that time. A time of self-isolation, not sleeping until midday the next day, and gripping onto any ego I thought I had at all.”

WATCH

The song has been brought to life with spooky, cut-out animation from LA creative Joe Sams. The off-beat visuals intensify the song’s message with Emerson Snowe represented as ‘Frankenstein’, a skeleton who hides himself in makeshift flesh and skin. The pair’s serendipitous meeting adds to the allure.
“I was invited to a release party in the Hollywood Hills in LA. Later on in the evening a dude arrived holding two life sized hand-made puppets – similar to the muppets from Sesame Street. I watched him place them down in chairs in the dining room, he placed a beer into one of the puppets hands and closed it shut. Whoever this cat was I knew I wanted to do something with him.
“His name was Joe and his animations and mind is not only the most sincere portrayal of an artist I had seen in a long time, but is inspirational and built on pure love for a craft. Later on, he told me that he had folders and scrapbooks full of disembodied corpses and really grotesque images that he wasn’t able to use in any of his previous projects. I’m so grateful to have met him and have something to show of this period in both of our lives.”
‘Frankenstein’ follows the release of Emerson Snowe’s debut EP, That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll. Singles off the EP saw unwavering support from Matt Wilkinson at Beats 1 and BBC Radio 1. From Brisbane originally, Emerson Snowe has toured with King Krule and GUM, and spent the last few years overseas, immersing himself into wider music, fashion and creative circles. He performed debut shows in Tokyo and LA whilst working on music in both areas and also appeared at SXSW and The Great Escape. Currently based in Germany, he walked the runway at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris 2020 for Geoffery B Small and is now represented in the region. He has continued to dance further in the fashion landscape globally, with coveted labels Gucci and Fendi also utilising his music in recent campaigns.‘Frankenstein’ is the beginning of the next passage in this exciting artist’s growing story.

MEADOW RETURNS WITH 2021 FESTIVAL REVAMP ANNOUNCING KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD, ANGIE McMAHON AND MORE FOR THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED WEEKEND THIS APRIL!

The time has finally come. Welcome, Meadow 2021.

The acclaimed regional Victorian multi-day event is returning to the rolling Bambra hills over the ANZAC long weekend to take two on their anticipated seventh instalment. Announcing 2021 festival headliners: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and Angie McMahon, who will lead an all-Australian lineup of beloved acts traversing all corners of the music landscape. From Friday 23 – Sunday 25 April, catch Meadow’s 2020-penned artists: Close Counters, Surprise Chef, Elizabeth, Cool Sounds, 3K, Sweet Whirl, Darcy Justice and Caitlin Harnett & The Pony Boys, alongside 2021 additions: HTRK, Mimi Gilbert, Romero and Emma Volard for three days and two nights of aural exploration and collective celebration at the iconic Bambra Bowl.

After cancelling their mammoth 2020 European and US run of dates, Melbourne psych stalwarts King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard will take to the Bambra Bowl this April with even more releases ready to craftily deploy from their expansive, genre-spanning catalogue over 15 albums strong and counting. 2020’s KG and 2021’s imminent LW see the band returning to their idiosyncratic microtonal ways, bringing in a new era as a newfangled six-piece. Joined by Melbourne’s own new-age raconteur, Angie McMahon, who has made waves the world over since the release of her acclaimed debut album Salt, and recent reimagining Piano Salt, the 2021 Meadow headliners are sure to draw some of the festival’s most devoted and attentive crowds yet.

In parallel to the stellar live showcase, Meadow introduces a Virtual Festival in 2021.
14 artists, 2 sunsets, 2 sunrises, dancing, cocktails, camping and more captured live from the Bambra Bowl. Meadow will partner with Hutch Collective and Baked to beam a dusty Autumn sky, rugged bushland and a once in a year-time musical retreat back to the comfort of your living room providing a level of certainty that’s been missing since last March. You buy a ticket. You can watch the festival from home. Access via the Humanitix Virtual Events Hub. Simple. Professionally produced, presented on-demand over a 3 day period, two weeks after Meadow Music Festival. May 7-9, 2021.

Though the earth’s axis has substantially shifted since the festival’s previous iteration, Meadow promises the same smooth rotation of its own world beyond the trees, with diligent COVIDSafe plans in place to keep everyone spinning safely within its orbit.

This Means:
– Reduced capacity
– Temperature checks and basic COVID screening upon arrival
– Ticketholders grouped into Eastside and Westside with the site split down the middle to reduce crowding and minimise close contacts.
– Three designated ‘viewing zones’ (front, middle and back) in the amphitheatre to maintain social distancing whilst watching the performances
– Assigned coloured wristbands denoting each attendee’s designated ‘viewing zone’

NOTE: ‘viewing zones’ will rotate at the end of each day, and once between Saturday daytime and nighttime, ensuring all festival-goers get the same amazing Meadow affair even in the presence of social distancing and capacity restrictions.

Do not fret, this change in circumstance will not negate the Meadow experience, with standing, sitting, singing, dancing, BYO and good vibes both permitted and encouraged within your designated zone.

A super limited release of tickets are now on sale at $189+BF with teenagers accompanied by adults free to join in the festivities with a valid full-priced ticket, and children under 12 invited to attend for free. All 2020 ticketholders will now have been contacted via email by the Meadow team to reissue their tickets for this year’s event. Car passes will not be required (this year only!) but Meadow is still committed to reducing its environmental impact. Carpooling is strongly encouraged, reusable drink bottles will be given to all punters upon arrival, and the Meadow team have even planted 360 baby trees during our brief hiatus.

Whilst on the topic of improvements, Meadow has also formed a new 2021 ticketing partnership with Humanitix. This means each ticket purchased will contribute valuable funding to support educational scholarships for disadvantaged Indigenous students in Australia.

Just 90-minutes southwest of Melbourne, and nestled between rainforest to the west, the ocean to the south and rolling plains to the north, Meadow is an idyllic spot to gather, reflect and celebrate the end of the year-that-must-not-be-named, welcoming the return of human connection and much needed sonic rejuvenation.

Do not sleep on this one.
