CIRCLE releases single ‘HELEN’ ahead of forthcoming album. Earnest heart-rendering indie-folk at its absolute best.

by the partae April 2, 2022
written by the partae

‘Helen’ is a lightly orchestrated acoustic tune that feels more like a fond memory than a song. Sufjan Stevens-esque whispered vocals adorn ambient and delicately plucked guitar. The result is an expansive and shimmery spectral that is disarming in its honesty.

Circle writes intimately, weaving what feels like a personal narrative into an easily relatable song, possessing enough innate beauty to soften even the hardest of critiques.

‘Helen’ is plucked from Circle’s forthcoming album Coco and Charlie and provides a small taste of what is to come. “Coco and Charlie started as a collection of love songs about the people in my life who’ve made an indelible mark in one way or another. As the material progressed over the course of demos and a natural whittling down process, the songs started to be more like archetypes. With that development came a deeper freedom to expand on the lyrical content and not be too constrained to a corporeal truth about an individual.”

The softly spoken lyrics from Radi Safi are instantly enchanting. Reminiscent of former front-runners Mount Eerie, The Middle East, and Sufjan Stevans. A talent of ‘Helen’ is that it avoids the trappings of kitsch nostalgia – instead, it is unquestionably rooted in the present.

Circle honors the artistry of music and a special aspect of their work is the unique recording processes. This ultimately imparts a special quality that elevates the song into music for the soul.

“We decided that we’d push classic four track demos to the absolute limit and record everything to our old Tascam tape machine. The process of a great condenser mic going through a world class preamp only to all end up on a $200 tape machine (with a ridiculously worn out tape inside) had a huge allure.” Circle

The accompanying video for Helen was produced by Gabby Dadgostar, a veteran in the Sydney music video scene. Aligning with the thematic strengths of the music, that being rooted in the tender memory for loved ones. Gabby had the idea to collect and use iPhone footage in a unique way. “It’s obviously a very simple concept but it marries beautifully with the aesthetic of the recording and lyrical content. Suffice to say we were all pleasantly surprised!” Circle

One True God Releases Deep, Emotional, Dark Electronic Cover of Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown”

by the partae April 2, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: One True God
Title: Love Lockdown
Label: Self release

Download / Stream

Canadian startup One True God (OTG) delivers a moody electronic remake of Kanye‘s now-classic hit “Love Lockdown” as his newest independent release. The new track is perfectly representative of OTG‘s signature style, which centers on minimalistic and yet dramatic sonic thematics with a twist of dark rhythm. The now Los Angeles-based singer & producer’s soulful voice serves as a powerful conduit for West‘s original lyrics, and fans can clearly hear that One True God has a personal attachment to the original song itself; in fact, the remake was a product of his relationship struggles he was facing at the time of working on it. While taking on such a well-known production as “Love Lockdown” can be intimidating, OTG does so with sophistication and personal touch of darkness.

“People are much more in control of their lives and situations than they think they are. That’s just an important message, I feel. And it resonates deeply with me. I think that dedicating a project to that belief was important.” – One True God about his artist name.

One True God has been an active producer since 2018, but first appeared on the scene as a singer via “Come To Me,” on mau5trap, where he captivated listeners with his powerful vocals. Much of his sonic style is built on emotive, darker thematics such as the challenging parts of love and romance, paired with angsty bass elements and mid tempo melodies. His affinity for dark vibes has been a part of him since childhood; he was always attracted to characters with a nefarious side, such as Spawn, Blade and Venom. Although spending most of his childhood in Canada, he went to high school in Dubai, to which he accredits much of his global taste. With releases like “Love Lockdown,” serving as a follow-up single to his earlier “Tesla,” “Afterlife,” and more on the horizon, we can’t wait to see what’s next for One True God.

The Sky Is The Limit For GENIIE BOY As They Release New Single & Music Video ‘Elevator To The Sky’

‘Bruises’ landed on ‘Fuzzy’ Spotify Playlist

“vibrant pop with soulfully charged grooves reminiscent of dulcie.“
4 / 5 (Declan Byrne, Triple J) [About ‘Bad Company’]

“Is it a pop song? Is it a rock song? Is it even a song? Maybe it’s more of an affirmation! Point is, I don’t what they’re doing or how they’re doing but I know that it’s good and I want more of it.”
4 / 5 (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J) [About ‘Bruises’]

“The layers in this track! Taking me for a sweet old ride! Groovy track with feel good energy!”
4 / 5 (Tom Forrest, Triple J) [About ‘Bruises’]

“Between Alisha’s charismatic voice and the smart production, there’s plenty to love”
4 / 5 (Abby Butler, Triple J) [About ‘Fool’s Play’]

“Their cruisy, laid-back indie-pop vibes given a signature lift via Alisha’s lilting, layered vocals and Scott’s razor sharp production. For two artists who’ve never spent a lot of time around pop, they’re sure as heck nailing it.”
(Natalie O’Driscoll, Blank Mag)

“‘Bad Company’ is an ice-cream sundae with the lot.” (AU Review)

“Sure to be stuck in your head from the first listen, Geniie Boy’s indie-pop sound is your perfect summer companion, with multi-instrumental hooks, danceable drum beats, soaring harmonies and Alisha’s conversational lyrics keeping you company…” (Amnplify)

Known for their quirky brand of electro / indie-pop that shimmers with the sonic vibrancy of infinite crystal stars, beloved Gold Coast duo GENIIE BOY are unveiling their newest single ‘Elevator To The Sky’ alongside a zany, space-powered music video accompaniment (out April 1).

Since gliding onto the scene at the start of last year in a swirl of electro-pop grooves and sumptuous sonic tales, Alisha Todd and Scott French of GENIIE BOY released a handful of widely-received singles and their debut EP ‘If You Have Something To Say’.

Now, with their first release of the year, GENIIE BOY are unveiling a cosmic flower bed of sound as fuzzy synths and buoyant electric guitar grooves combine to create decadent pop atmospheres. Todd’s silken vocals make their jubilant climb to the sky where they meet the chorus, floating in a limitless expanse that vibrates with the distinctive otherworldly sound of the theremin.

With one foot on the earth and the other lost in space, the track’s grounding bass and unclouded percussion tether Todd’s transcendent vocal harmonies as they continue to rise alongside French’s crunchy guitar riffs, all brought into focus with interstellar production that glistens with the undeniable sheen of GENIIE BOY magic.

Inspired by a podcast discussing the idea of an elevator to the sky that would act as a conduit for interstellar travel as a way forward for human evolution, ‘Elevator To The Sky’ completely embraces the weird and the wonderful, brought further into being with an appropriately wacky music video accompaniment.

Paying homage to 60’s sci-fi television sets, the video shows GENIIE BOY being beamed up to a party in the sky, glimmering with Futuristic Space People (FSP’s), psychedelic drinks, laser light shows and a space band, completely encapsulating the pair’s creative vision through DIY sets and costumes, as the band states:

“Like all GENIIE BOY things, this video is very DIY. We made the Futuristic Space People costumes (lots of paper mache, putty and trips to Spotlight), directed, filmed part of and edited the clip. We advocate DIY!”

The duo’s previous releases have seen support from Spotify (‘Bruises’ landed on ‘Fuzzy’ playlist), Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, AU Review, AAA Backstage, BLANK GC, Scenestr, Aus Music Scene, Amnplify, The Music and more.

Enter the atmosphere with GENIIE BOY’s new single ‘Elevator To The Sky’ and music video accompaniment, both out on April 1.

Anya Anastasia Aims To Inspire A Brighter Future With Debut EP ‘Dissenter’

Top 20 Three D Radio – #2 Most Played

“Losing Wild is a very impressive way to debut Anya’s sound, it’s soft and smooth in delivery however holds a certain level of power with it’s darker tones.” (AAA Backstage)

“The yearning in Anya’s vocals also draws you in with an eerie, bewitching charm that envelops the senses.” (Scenestr)

“Taking a bold approach to art-rock, ‘Spinning Heads’ balances fluid keys and warm guitar tones with Anya’s angelic vocals.” (Glide Magazine)

Known for her ability to transcribe wonders of the natural world through lush soundscapes of soulful experimental folk, rugged desert rock and unique instrumental accompaniments, Adelaide’s Anya Anastasia is unveiling her profound debut EP ‘Dissenter’ on April 1.

Debuting at the start of 2022 during a time of great unrest in the world, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Anya Anastasia aims to stir dissent and environmental action through her distinctive style of art-rock that inspires selfless reflection and positive change.

Now, Anya Anastasia is showcasing the culmination of her work so far, delivering a 5-track collection of conscientious sonic stories that question the status quo through intricate arrangements, vivid instrumentals and transfixing vocals, invoking intense sentiments about life, land and love.

Opening the EP is ‘Losing Wild’, driven by an invigorating beat, the deadly pluck of banjo strings and soaring vocal harmonies to explore the idea that the extinction crisis heralds the end of good poetry and diminishment of playful minds.

Next, ‘Smog & Mirrors’ enters as an enchanting mockery of consumerism with overdriven electric guitar melodies, crystal vocals and frenzied instrumental layers, inspired by a dream about being trapped and resigning to a pre-determined fate.

Arriving in a swirl of tender guitar strokes and fluid keys is ‘Spinning Heads’, as Anya’s ethereal vocal harmonies soar above soothing melodies that aim to observe stillness as the restless chorus brings illusions of the chaotic modern world.

Lead by the booming beat of marching drums, title-track ‘Dissenter’ forges ahead in the name of equality and a better future as ominous vocals and powerful instrumental warnings bring attention to the failings of Western Democracy.

Closing the EP is the eerily captivating ‘Goes Untold’, as stripped-back, guitar-lead melodies join the raw strength of Anya’s beautiful voice, paying tribute to the importance of relationship to land and country, which is so often highlighted in the culture and awareness of First Nations people.

Previously released singles ‘Losing Wild’ and ‘Spinning Heads’ have seen support from Double J, Backseat Mafia, Scenestr, GC Live, AAA Backstage, Amnplify, Glide Magazine and more.

Anya Anastasia’s debut EP ‘Dissenter’ is out on April 1, with her EP Launch scheduled for Saturday April 2 at Nexus Arts, Adelaide.

Dusty Release Carefree Indie-Rock Single ‘Anxiety’

by the partae April 1, 2022
written by the partae

Previous Support For Dusty

“Dusty are in a confident mood on this one, showing some angst and real talk levels that you hear from acts like Moaning Lisa!” 4 / 5
[About ‘Do You Care?’] (Declan Byrne, Triple J)

“Another strong one from this band. Lowkey ferocity to the vocals and it feels full of conviction.” 4 / 5
[About ‘Do You Care?’] (Dave Ruby Howe, Triple J)

“The track is full of conviction and punch, powerfully honest and raw in its delivery…” [About ‘Do You Care?’]  (Ungrained)

Glowing with an indie-rock flavour that combines bright, cloudless melodies with an endearingly fun-loving spirit, Brisbane band Dusty are releasing their newest single ‘Anxiety’ on March 31.

Since their debut at the start of 2021, Dusty have already made a huge impact, releasing well-received singles ‘Easier’ and ‘Do You Care?’ before joining BUGS on their Diamond Tour to round out the year in bangin’ indie-rock style.

Dusty are now bringing that same irresistible enthusiasm to their newest single ‘Anxiety’, which arrives with the purpose of lifting spirits and moving feet, using tropical guitar-lead melodies and persuasive percussion. Frontwoman Annie Newcombe’s vocals move playfully from pure and delicate to edgy and unrestrained, hitting its peak in the chorus by pouring as much self-deprecating Aussie humour as possible into two repeated, and all-too-relatable, words.

Loaded with raucous overdriven guitar riffs, riveting vocal harmonies and addictive good humour, ‘Anxiety’ is made to be enjoyed with a rowdy, carefree energy that happily contradicts the title of the song.

With its joyous delivery and important message, ‘Anxiety’ quickly became an audience and band favourite, providing a relatable message within an approachable, unintimidating track. Annie Newcombe states:

“It’s my favourite song in the set, I like how many people tell me that they can relate to it. For me, it’s important that we talk about mental health, and I think having a song about anxiety really opens up the conversation.”

Dusty’s previous releases have seen support from Triple J, Triple J Unearthed, 4ZZZ, LivewireAU, Ungrained Mag and more.

Take a deep breath and dust off those dancing shoes because Dusty’s newest single ‘Anxiety’ is out on March 31.

The Bluesfest site experienced flash flooding during the Northern Rivers rain event earlier this week.

Thankfully, our event site area where the music occurs escaped and did not have major flooding. “Some car parks and camping grounds did experience flash flooding but the water is subsiding quickly,” Bluesfest Director Peter Noble said.
The load-in continues, the tents are ready to be raised,  and with less than two weeks to go before we open our gates, the forward weather report is good, with plenty of sun forecast daily. We are optimistic that our grounds will dry out, and our site will be ready to welcome you.
Bluesfest lovers please note, ALL our stages and food halls will be under big canvas tent tops.

“REST ASSURED – BLUESFEST IS ON –  AND WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU”
We look forward to welcoming you to the greatest gathering of Australian artists in the history of Australian Music, plus some very special international guests.

Toro y Moi shares video for new single ‘Déjà Vu’

PRAISE FOR MAHAL SINGLES

Stoney Roads

“…takes listeners on a chronological journey through genre, as they ride across Bear’s deep groove excursions.”
Purple Sneakers

“might be his best and most eclectic project to date”

Clash

“vibrant and playful signifying an artist in total control”
Notion

“a groovy, laidback slice of funk-pop”
Pitchfork

“heavily funky, vocally low-key heater”
Stereogum

Toro y Moi, a.k.a Chaz Bear shares another offering from his forthcoming album MAHAL, due April 29 via Dead Oceans. ‘Déjà Vu‘ arrives with a Justin Morris-directed video that begins with the viewer entering a white stretch limousine that acts as a portal to dreamlike vignettes of Bear, culminating in a montage of him traveling across America. Speaking about the video, Bear shares, “I hope you enjoy this small slice of American pie that I have prepared for you.”

‘Déjà Vu’ follows the previously released singles ‘The Loop‘ and ‘Postman,’ both of which arrived with videos directed by Kid. Studio, and the Arlington Lowell-directed video for ‘Magazine‘ featuring Salami Rose Joe Louis.

MAHAL follows Toro’s highly celebrated 2019 album Outer Peace, which Pitchfork described as “one of his best albums in years” along with his Grammy-nominated 2020 collaboration with Flume, ‘The Difference,’ which was also featured in a global campaign for Apple‘s Airpods.

Toro y Moi is the 12+ year project of South Carolina-reared, Bay Area-based Chaz Bear. In the wake 2008’s global economic collapse, Toro y Moi emerged as a figurehead of the beloved sub-genre widely known as chillwave, the sparkling fumes of which still heavily influence musicians all over today. Over the subsequent decade, his music and graphic design has far, far surpassed that particular designation. Across 9 albums (6 studio as Toro y Moi along with a live album, compilation and mixtape) with the great Carpark label, he has explored psych-rock, deep house, UK hip-hop; R&B and well-beyond without losing that rather iconic, bright and shimmering Toro y Moi fingerprint. As a graphic designer, Bear has collaborated with brands like Nike, Dublab and Van’s. And as a songwriter and producer, he’s collaborated with other artists like Tyler, The Creator, Flume, Travis Scott, HAIM, and Caroline Polachek.

DONNY BENÉT New EP Le Piano is out now! Performing in Sydney & Melbourne this month Touring Europe & UK in May

by the partae April 1, 2022
written by the partae

Today, Donny Benét, the Sydney-based composer – hailed and panned by critics as “Prince on a serious budget cut” – unveils his new EP, Le Piano, via Dot Dash Recordings / Remote Control Records, alongside new single ‘Cappuccino‘. The EP arrives hot on the heels of a 13-date US and Canada tour, which saw the self-professed “adult entertainer” captivate his evergrowing audiences in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago and more.

Composed and recorded entirely by himself at the renowned Donnyland Studios in 2021, Le Piano sees Benét masterfully utilise vintage synthesisers and drum machines to present his views on life, love and relationships through the power of song. Of the project, Donny shares: “I wanted to create a short EP of instrumentals reflective of the music that has helped me navigate touring life, and life at home for the past years. For me, I really enjoy the headspace that instrumental music can put you in. You can listen to it in any environment with any degree of commitment. It can be something you listen to on the train, plane, something to have on while you’re doing your chores, working from home, working out or just something to bop along to. As mentioned in past interviews I’m very taken by Japanese artists Hiroshi Yoshimura, Yoshio Suzuki and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Side B of the record is influenced by the effect that these artists have had on my musical approach. Side A is a tip of the hat my love of 12′ funk/city pop/disco instrumentals.”

Speaking to ‘Cappuccino‘, Benét notes: “’Cappuccino’ was a half-finished B side left over from The Don. It sat alongside Beneath the Sheets, a bonus instrumental from The Don. I’d always wanted to release it and revisiting it whilst writing the EP gave it a chance to get a fresh lease on life. Creamy, sweet and strong – I hope you like ‘Cappuccino’”.

It is preceded by the project’s title-track: an intoxicatingly groovy instrumental piece paying homage to, and influenced by, Benét‘s love of funk, city pop and disco.

Donny Benét will be bringing his enigmatic live show to Sydney’s The Factory Theatre on Saturday 9 April and Melbourne’s 170 Russell on Friday 29 April, before heading off on a 23-date tour of Europe and the UK. Tickets are on sale via www.donnybenet.com

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, Benét’s 2011 breakthrough album Don’t Hold Back confused and intrigued many, establishing him as a cult figure in the Australian music scene. Benét‘s piece de resistance came in his fourth album, The Don, featuring the breakthrough single ‘Konichiwa’.

An unexpected invite to the Pohoda Festival (Slovakia) in 2018 allowed Donny to embark on his first European headline tour. Returning for a further 4 sold-out tours, Donny had now established a new fanbase in Europe. 2019 saw Donny open for Mac DeMarco in the US and after blowing away audiences he returned in 2020 for his first headline tour.

In between his frenetic touring schedule, Donny wrote and recorded his acclaimed follow-up album Mr Experience, which was released in 2020. Unable to tour, the album was filmed as an online concert, Live Experience. An accomplished bassist, Donny is joined by his band of professionals, The Donny Benét Show band when performing live.

Donny has toured Australia since 2011 and Europe/US from 2018, regularly selling out headline shows and performing at festivals including Rock Werchter, Down the Rabbit Hole, Pohoda Festival, Valkhof Festival, Plissken Festival, Sydney Festival, Darwin Festival, Vivid Festival, Adelaide Festival, MONA FOMA, Panama Festival, Yours and Owls, and Big Day Out.

BIG TWISTY & THE FUNKNASTY DROP NEW SINGLE ‘SLAVE TO THE FUNK’ + PLAYING AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

by the partae April 1, 2022
written by the partae

Off the back of a jam-packed single launch party at Frankie’s Pizza last night, Big Twisty & The Funknasty share their new single ‘Slave To The Funk’, a funk anthem which embodies everything the Twist is about: booty shakin and getting down.  The track comes with an energetic video filmed around Wollongong/Kiama, NSW.

Big Twisty & The Funknasty are arguably one of the hottest upcoming funk/hiphop act in Australia right now. Whipping crowds into a funk frenzy across the country with their explosive, 10-person live show, they are here to open up your mind, free your body and have a funkin’ good time.

Produced by Jack Nigro at The Grove studios, ‘Slave To The Funk’ is a fusion of old school funk and 90’s Hiphop with huge singalong chants, brain busting bass riffs, soulful organ, and an aggressive rap flow. This song speaks to how you can’t escape the funk no matter how hard you try, so surrender your body and get those hips shaking.

Since the formation of the band in 2019, Big Twisty & The Funknasty have wasted no time in developing their live act, appearing on numerous support tours with the likes of Dune Rats, the Vanns and Ocean Alley. Following the release of ‘King Is Back’, ‘Pickup Truck’ and ‘Pussycat’, the crew took off on their own headline tours supporting each single and selling out all shows across the east coast of Australia. Big Twisty & The Funknasty are no strangers to the big stage, having played Yours and Owls festival and Beyond the City.

As the band prepare to play the Australian Grand Prix next week, watch this space for more exciting Big Twisty & The Funknasty news! Bring the FUNK!

4 Music-Listening Devices And How To Get The Most Out Of Them

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

There are so many different music-listening devices on the market these days, from earbuds to full-blown surround sound systems. Because there’s so much choice, it can be hard to know which one’s right for you. Do you want a small and portable device that you can take anywhere? Or do you prefer a larger system that will give you better sound quality? In this article, we’ll discuss 4 of the most popular music-listening devices and how to get the most from them.

1. Record Players

Record players were once the most popular way to listen to music. While they’ve been replaced by other devices in recent years, they’re making a comeback. They work by playing vinyl records that have grooves on them -and the needle of the player follows them. This creates a unique (‘more live’) sound that many people prefer over digital (‘more sterile’) music.

Record players require more maintenance than other devices as the needle can get dirty and worn down over time. You’ll also need to buy vinyl records to play on them, which can be expensive (unless you find secondhand ones). Finally, record players aren’t the cheapest option, although the prices are coming down. However, they can provide a unique listening experience that you won’t get with other devices.

Additional Resources

If you’re considering investing in one, check out some of the specialist websites on the internet. The popularity of toprecordplayers.com demonstrates peoples’ desire to find the best record players and reviews, and comparisons of top turntables. Folks want to access buying guides for portable record players, plus floor speakers and headphones for vinyl. You can also discover tips and advice on turntable noise, pitch adjustment, and issues with needles or volume.

2. CD Players

CD players are becoming less common these days, due to the advent of streaming apps like Spotify. They work by playing discs that have music encoded on them. CD players usually come with a built-in amplifier and speakers, making them a great option for people who don’t want to use Bluetooth or wifi. Many modern versions will resume playing where you left off last time.

Make sure you always keep your CDs in good condition as they can become scratched over time. You should also try not to play them too loudly as this can damage the speakers. Finally, consider investing in a CD player with a remote control so you can change the track or volume without having to get up.

3. Bluetooth (Smart) Speakers

Bluetooth speakers are a type of audio speaker that allows you to wirelessly play your music from your phone or other devices. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and have many different features, such as the ability to connect multiple devices at once.

Make sure you connect the speaker to a power source and try to keep it in an open space as this will improve the sound quality. Some speakers (such as Sonos) allow you to calibrate the sound EQ according to the room that you’re in. As with CD players, playing your music too loudly can damage the speaker.

4. Headphones And Earbuds

Headphones are a type of audio device that allows you to listen to your music privately. They’re ideal for use around the house (especially the wireless versions) or when jogging. If you want to use them for listening to music while you work, noise-canceling headphones would be a good option. Secondly, make sure you keep them clean by using a soft cloth to wipe them down every once in a while. Thirdly, only play them at a volume that is safe for your ears. Finally, take care of the headphones’ cords by coiling them up properly and keeping them away from heat sources.

Earbuds are a type of headphones that fit inside your ear canal. They’re small and lightweight, making them a good option for people who want to listen to their music on the go. Earbuds come in both wired and wireless varieties, and many come with built-in microphones so you can take calls without having to remove them from your ears. They need looking after in similar ways to standard headphones. If you plan on using them while working out, however, choose earbuds that are designed for use during physical activity.

Hopefully, you’ve learned a little more about these major examples of music-listening devices. By looking after them properly they’ll perform at their best for the longest time possible. You’ll be able to enjoy your music for many years to come, thanks to the wonders of modern technology.

Reckless Coast

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Jaeden: Brisbane, but originally we’re all coastal kids from the Sunny Coast all the way down to Coffs Harbour!

How did you first start playing music?

Jaeden: I started guitar when I was 5. As a teenager I did open mics where I started singing… I got into programs such as T.D.P (Syd) and from those I started playing at conferences through the education department. Travelling up and down the East Coast for those really got me into the life of a professional musician, and it all sort of rolled on from there!

India: I was brought up with music constantly playing around the house and as a toddler my parents would set up pots and pans from the kitchen and create a makeshift drum kit for me with chopsticks as the drum sticks. Then over time I picked up my dad’s acoustic guitar, started lessons and then found a love of bass through playing my grandads old 70’s Fender Jazz and I was hooked!

Jono: I started playing piano when I was 8 and then eventually wanted to learn instruments like guitar and bass when I was a bit older. I only really started playing drums when I was 15.

How did Reckless Coast form?

Jaeden: I started the band when I came to Brisbane with a few mates who only stayed on for a bit… that’s when I met India and we really hit off, just with the same goals and inspirations…

India: I saw Jaeden made an ad looking for a bassist and drummer, the first time I saw it I didn’t respond and thought “if it’s meant to be, I’ll see it again.” A few days later he posted a different ad and I saw it again so responded. We had a jam session just guitar and bass and hit it off instantly.

Jaeden: Our drummer then left to pursue other avenues in Melbourne late 2020, and that’s when Jono jumped on board… I didn’t even know he was a drummer ahahaha, but we were good mates and jammed… turns out he’s a mad man on the skins and so here we are!

Jono: Bit of a long story on how we all became friends to be honest. I have known Jaeden for approx 3-4 years just because I used to do sound for the band for work before I joined. Both myself and Jaeden’s projects would end up on lineups together because of our similar styles. So we saw a lot of each other. Eventually we just caught up for a beer and he mentioned that Vann (the previous drummer) had moved and I was keen to play some drums again and here we are.

What’s been happening recently?

India: We’ve been in the studio with producer Cody McWaters (King Stingray, Selfish Sons, The Chats) recording new songs, getting ready for the tour and workshopping another batch of new tunes that I’m so excited to share in the near future!

Your latest single ‘Do You Want Me’ will be out on April 8, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

Jaeden: I was working at a pub at the time, and was very much tired of the same ol nonsense. One shift in particular I was just over it… too much to do, not enough help, even less motivation and I remember thinking of how much I just wanted to do music rather than this job and the thoughts that went through my head during that shift pretty much wrote the song.

Sound wise, the riff came out with a pub rock vibe… which is funny considering the song’s inspiration. I wanted a tune with pumping, energetic ferocity, so the vocals are almost preaching in their delivery. So it didn’t feel like a re-hashed Oz Rock track though, I added a euphoric, almost relieving chorus (plus a few other elements).

What does this track mean to you?

Jaeden: Just a blatant question to life I guess hahaha. For me, it’s for anyone who feels like they’re getting nowhere and are at that point of questioning whether to keep going or what the hell are they doing it for… it’s a song for that moment haha

India: To me this song is special because it ties in our old school rock inspiration but with a modern edge. Lyrically, it makes you think about what you want but in a ‘zero f**ks given’ type of way!

Jono: To me it’s kind of a transition from the old school style of the band to the new stuff we have coming out.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who with?

Jono: As India mentioned before, Cody McWaters recorded and mixed this track. Matthew Gray mastered the track.

How did you approach the recording process?

Jono: Before we hit the studio I threw some demos together and sent them to Cody and he made some notes and we did some pre-production to polish the track off. We tracked the drums at Jeff Lovejoys studio in Moorooka and recorded the rest at Hunting Ground Studios.

India: Our recording process runs so smoothly with Jono and Cody. We also don’t limit ourselves to making changes on the day of recording, giving us more creative freedom in the process.

Any tours coming up?

India: We have an east coast tour coming up, shows ranging from the Sunshine Coast down to Sydney and the Central Coast area, and on our way back north will play Gold Coast and a Brisbane show too!

What do you find most rewarding and challenging whilst being on the road?

Jaeden: The most rewarding thing is meeting people you would’ve never met if you just sat around in the same town… every tour I always get excited about who I might meet, or who I’m gonna see again.

India: I agree, the rewarding part is meeting new people and seeing them light up when you play. Challenging part is probably just the change in sleep schedule. But nothing too bad! I’m always grateful to just tour and take in the highs and the lows. It’s all part of the fun.

Jono: Yeah same. I love meeting new people. I haven’t been to the towns we are going to to play shows so I am excited.

What spots do you like playing and where do you want to play?

India: I loved playing NSW for the Curious Affection tour. They’re super chill but always ready to jam out to rockier music like ours. I would love to play the UK though, I’d happily tour there ASAP.

You’ve changed your band name, why the change?

Jaeden: After we released our last single “TALK” we realised we were a much more refined band. It was a new era for us and we wanted to let people know we were serious about it all… plus the old name Rude Rum didn’t portray us properly musically or as individuals.

We’re three coastal kids who love a good rock show so Reckless Coast was a perfect fit.

What are you looking forward to in this new era as a band?

India: I’m really looking forward to releasing more music that is currently being written and workshopped. As Jaeden said, we’re much more refined now. We know exactly what we like, what we want and we’re more than ready to do it!

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Jaeden: I’ve been on a mad Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes binge haha hooked on the drive that band puts out… and I’ve also just got into Amyl and the Sniffers too! Just diggin their style of raw energy.

India: Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of Hot Milk, and for some reason a lot of early 2000’s rock, and nu-metal? Just revisiting the modern classics!

Jono: Sly Withers, Polaris, Ruby Fields. I also get around local bands like Verum, Ben Tenison, Annoying Neighbours, Patient Lounge, Brixton Alley and Space Flamingo.

What do you like to do away from music?

Jaeden: I love cooking, especially things from scratch like flatbreads, dumplings, burgers… I’m vegetarian too and I love figuring out creative ways to make alternate versions of things

India:  If I’m not playing music I’m doing something creative, whether that’s designing gig posters for artists or promotional assets for other band’s releases. Brain constantly thinking of what I can do next!

Jono: I love basketball and Fishing. My career at the moment is entirely based around music which is awesome. But I try and do other things in my down time.

What’s planned for 2022?

Jaeden: more music, more shows, and just rad things in general… we want to do some extra content that’s a little off the track, but just to have something fun for the fans to engage with.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Jaeden: Currently… dumplings… gawd damn love those things

Recently found a rad secret bar called Cindy Chows which I believe was inspired by Shanghai speakeasy bars of the 1920’s… feels so exclusive.

India: My favourite food will always be anything Italian. I love Cindy Chows too! I much prefer the more hidden and low key hangouts than the hustle and bustle locations nowadays.

Jono: Been loving Italian at the moment as well. Also been loving sashimi for some reason,

TAYLOR B-W RETURNS WITH STRIKING NEW SINGLE ‘IN UR NET’

by the partae March 31, 2022
written by the partae

Sydney’s Taylor B-W is back with a new slice of indie/R&B in ‘In Ur Net’, a fresh and vibrant cut from the artist who has been continuing to grow her body of work over the last year and a half.

When it comes to Taylor’s work, listeners are presented with music they can vibe out to in any club or party setting; while also being served lyricism that is personal, relatable, tackling a full spectrum of emotion.

‘In Ur Net’ continues this tradition for Taylor: it’s a song that presents as a crisp fusion of R&B, Reggaeton and contemporary pop music and beneath, there exists songwriting that pulls the listener in a direction marked by depth and impact.

A song about getting lost in obsession and lust for someone who doesn’t deserve it, ‘In Ur Net’ covers feelings of emotional entrapment and the all-encompassing overwhelming feelings that can come with it. For this project, Taylor worked with producer Liam Quinn at Alexandria’s Ralph Street Studios to get ‘In Ur Net’ just right.

“Like most of my songs, ‘In Ur Net’ is a fun, danceable pop song on face-value, however, behind the shininess, I delve into something deeper. This song is my take on how obsession and desire for someone can transform into delusion and mania.

‘In Ur Net’ is for anyone who has experienced an uncontrollable obsession and lust for someone who they know doesn’t deserve them.  It’s like you are stuck in deep water, trying to swim up to the surface, but something keeps sucking you deeper and deeper, giving you tunnel vision.”
TAYLOR B-W

Sonically, ‘In Ur Net’ sees Taylor moving into territory where we can hear the likes of Mabel, Dua Lipa and The Weeknd all coexisting; music made with attitude and no fear of blending genre and time with intensely personal narrative perspectives.

For the music video, Taylor worked with filmographer Desmond Hoo around different areas of Sydney’s inner west including Sydney Park and Newtown.

“I came across Desmond Hoo’s work randomly while flicking through Instagram and I reached out to him to see if he would be interested in collaborating on my music video. I sent him a Pinterest mood board and an extensive YouTube playlist with videos that emulated my vision.

Des had a really fresh take on my initial vision, by delving into the sentiment behind my lyrics.  He wanted to create an intimate ode to the cataclysm that is love, an anthem for those who get caught in love’s web.  With a series of carefully composed frames we feel a claustrophobia between me and my partner – without the camera ever revealing the partner’s face. I’m caught in his orbit, unable to let go.”
TAYLOR B-W

Following on from 2021’s ‘I’m So Broke’ and ‘Nunchucks’, Taylor steps up once again as a strong addition to the current wave of Sydney Pop/R&B voices turning heads.

PRAISE FOR TAYLOR B-W

“Taylor’s delivered another belter of a chorus here that has an octopus-like grip on you by the end.”
Triple J, Declan Byrne (‘I’m So Broke’, 2021)

“She has quickly established her penchant for crafting tracks that feel simultaneously dynamic and well thought-out; they’re always bursting at the seams with explosive energy, but never sacrifice musical acumen.”
Happy Magazine

“Taylor B-W is combining modern electro-pop influences with the nostalgia of ’90s hip hop and R&B to create bouncy, playful tunes that speak to you on both a physical and emotional level.”
Like Velvet

Taylor will be performing a special free show as part of Great Southern Nights this April in Newtown – a perfect opportunity to reconnect and catch ‘In Ur Net’ live!

Mia Lovelock ‘Winter Comes’ Review

by the partae March 30, 2022
written by the partae

Mia Lovelock, an Australian musician, captures our attention with a lovely new single titled ‘Winter Comes,’ which features her soulfully golden vocals, powerful melody, and a deep sounding instrumental, resulting in a genuinely refreshing dose of atmospheric trip-hop. As Mia reveals below, the song is about being content and focusing on the silver lining of life, and with the song’s euphoric instrumentation and meaningful lyrics, she has nailed the delivery of that message.

‘Winter Comes’ encourages us to remember the past, be strong in the present, and work together for a better future.” – Mia Lovelock We’ve been admirers of her previous work, including Last Night, which was added to Spotify’s Deadly Beats playlist and Apple Music’s FIRST playlist, and we encourage you to hit the play button on ‘Winter Comes’.
