SPELLBINDING SONGSTRESS, NIGHTEYES, DROPS DEBUT SINGLE, ‘LOWLIGHT’

by the partae June 2, 2022
written by the partae

MELBOURNE, Australia. May 2022. On March 3rd, 2022, Nighteyes – the alias of multi-instrumentalist Rachel Trainor – released her debut single, Lowlight, LISTEN HERE, the first track from her forthcoming album set for release in late 2022.

Fusing hard rock with dark electro-pop, Lowlight is vivid in narrative and hauntingly moving in delivery. Here, evocative lyricism elicits a visceral experience that prompts listeners to explore the darker realms of their subconscious. In Trainor’s own words:

“I had a vision in my mind when I wrote this song of the particular kind of light the moon emits, how it doesn’t entirely illuminate the dark and makes scary shadows out of things that would be benign during the day. The lyrics in the verses weave fear and paranoia into what would typically be a peaceful moonlit night, exploring the state you can get into when you’re so anxious that even the trees seem menacing.”

Sonically, the spellbinding single features driving distorted guitars, pulsing hypnotic drum loops, and electrifying synths that lay the bed for a melodic and darkly haunting vocal performance, bringing to mind the vocal stylings of Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, and Lana Del Rey.

Trainor began the recording process for Lowlight while on tour in March 2020, using limited recording equipment — a laptop, a small interface, and an electric guitar — achieving a rough mix before taking the track into her home studio for completion. “It’s been a labour of love, finding time during lockdowns to try different sounds. Throughout the songwriting process, my producer and partner, Drew Handcock (Honeybone, Divine Wave), was instrumental in helping me figure out the sound I was hearing in my head,” she explains.

Lowlight features live in the contemporary circus show, The Defiant, in which Trainor is the sole musician.

ABOUT NIGHTEYES

Nighteyes is the debut solo project of New Zealand born, Melbourne based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Rachel Trainor.

Drawing inspiration from the dark folk vibes of Chelsea Wolfe and Mazzy Star, the electronic sophistication of Monolink, and the heavier post-rock stylings of bands such as Russian Circles, Elder, and Explosions In The Sky, Nighteyes is an intricate melting pot of sounds merging seamlessly to create her distinct and signature flavour.

Having toured extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, performing with various bands, cabaret, and circus shows (Honeybone, Badgers, The Merindas, Coda Chroma, Rebel, The Defiant), Trainor’s original psych-garage project, Honeybone, has shared the stage with US acts such as Amanda Palmer and Wofat, and NZ legends Dragon and Beastwars.

Rachel is currently touring as the sole musician with The Defiant circus show, with three Nighteyes songs included in the show’s score. Press highlights include appearances on Channel 9’s ‘Sunrise’, features in Beat magazine, Drumscene, and NZ Musician magazine.

King Brown

by the partae June 1, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

We’re currently based in Perth, WA.

How did the band form?

The band started back in 2018 when Brendon and Shaun began jamming in Brendons spare room with one their good mates (Shaun originally on bass). Eventually Shaun brought his brother Ash down and we evolved from there, with a few extra additions (Ben & Jake) along
the way.

What’s been happening recently?

We’ve just been writing and recording a bunch of new music and playing a few gigs in there (when we don’t have to pull out due to covid!) We’ve been a little quiet, but things are starting to heat up again!

How’s the local Perth music scene at the moment?

It’s really great, there’s so much good music coming out of Perth right now. Everyone gets around each other and I think it really pushes us all to keep getting better and better.

Your latest single ‘My Love’ is out now, what influenced the sound and songwriting?

The sound has evolved over time to become what it is with this new single, there’s a lot of classic/blues rock that has heavily influenced these past few releases. Thematically ‘My love’ is a song about being completely lovesick towards someone. Feelings that are so intense that you’d do anything for them, but in the back of your mind being very insecure and jealous of anyone else because you’re afraid of losing them.

Where and when did you record/produce/master?

We recorded ‘My Love’ between Vision studios and Ben’s own Bumchic studio right at the end of 2021. It’s all recorded/produced/mixed by Ben and mastered by Simon Struthers at Forensic Audio. It really gives us a lot of freedom having access to our own studio and engineer and takes a bit of pressure off too.

Your previous drummer is now the frontman, how and why did this come about?

Brendon was the lead singer and drummer ever since we started as King Brown, which is an extremely hard thing to do. Towards the end of 2021 the new dynamic came to fruition very naturally. It was a combination of things like us adding different elements to our songs in the recording process (Keys/Percussion) that we were not able to perform live, plus us feeling a little awkward on stage as the frontman is all the way at the back. We all felt like it was a great opportunity to mix things up and we’re super excited for it.

How’s your live performance different due to the change?

It’s enhanced our live shows phenomenally, Brendon brings so much energy to the stage being out the front, we all feed off of it and it brings the whole band up a level performance wise. We’re able to have those new elements in our songs played live along with our amazingly talented new drummer Jake Coulter holding it down at the back.

What are you most excited about for this new era for the band?

Getting more and more live shows under our belt and focusing on bringing the best live performance we can. It also allows us to experiment a lot more in the studio which we are very excited about!

Favourite thing about live shows?

Just being able to play our music to people is always a good time, and it’s even better when they’re all boogieing along having a good time!

What’s next for King Brown, anything brewing?

We have a bunch of new music on the way this year, possibly leading to something bigger, but we’ll let you know all in due course! Haha

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Shaun – “I’ve had the new Old Mervs single on repeat ever since it came out”.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Clancy’s Freo is always an absolute belter of a time.

JP Hoe ‘Out Of The Darkness’ Premiere

by the partae May 29, 2022
written by the partae
Canadian singer songwriter JP Hoe has released his new single “Out Of The Darkness” from his upcoming album “Botanicals”.

‘Botanicals’ encapsulates JP’s journey over the past few years, in trying to find the balance between attentive father/husband/friend and lifelong traveling performer.  Sole songwriter, self-engineering and producing the album, he attempts to live up to his admired jack-of-all-trade predecessors (Sufjan Stevens, Hawksley Workman, Tom  Petty) to name a few. The outcome is a heartfelt collection of songs cloaked in JP’s fingerprints and creative perception. As the dust settles and a new normal becomes reality, so too is JP adapting to these challenges. Stopping is not an option. Corralling an audience to sing along at the top of their lungs or sharing a moment in the lobby with a stranger over a shared tragedy; these are the moments he wants back. Whether contributing to soundtracks on film or  tv, or performing on stages halfway across the world, his songs have the capacity to connect audiences of all shades.

The stories JP loves to share between the music reveal a person still searching, and someone who isn’t ashamed to laugh at his failures along the way. The silver lining of  the past two years for him has been a passionate reminder to carry the adventure  forward; throwing everything you have at it and leaving nothing to regret.

Sophie is a Brand New Open Air Event Series for Southern Spain

by the partae May 29, 2022
written by the partae
Sophie is a brand new outdoor and open air event series that puts a global spotlight on the emerging city of Malaga. It is a lovingly curated experience from a hugely experienced team that fuses underground music and nature with a real sense of community and all of the city’s rich cultural history. It goes down every Sunday afternoon and evening from July 3rd to August 28th in an all-new, luxurious and sun-kissed  secret venue located 15 minutes from Málaga’s city centre and 10 minutes from Málaga airport. Tickets start at 40EUR with a range of VIP packages and world class music guaranteed from Paul Kalkbrenner, Jamie Jones, Apollonia, Seth Troxler, [a:rpia:r], Enzo Siragusa, Craig Richards, Nicolas Lutz, Sonja Moonear, Mathew Jonson, tINI, Traumer, Francesco Del Garda, Gene On Earth, Sweely, and many more.

The team behind the newly born concept Sophie has been at the heart of the underground for years running various acclaimed parties around Europe. After a candid conversation between friends about the connections people make on the dance floor, Sophie was born with the aim of bringing something new, fresh and exciting to Málaga. All the people behind the project have lived there for years and now fully exploit the potential of Spain’s third largest city in terms of tourism, foreign investment, social development, global airport connections and economic growth in general.

With its amazing food, great beaches and now the arrival of Sophie, this city has it all. It goes down in a gloriously sun-kissed and naturalistic location, a purpose built escapist haven that blends in seamlessly with nature and makes for magical musical memories with a serious soundtrack and beach time vibes.

Says Giorgio Maulini, one of the founders of the project: “There was a big gap in Malaga that needed to be filled. A place where we could offer an alternative cultural celebration of life. Málaga has a really rich cultural proposal for folkloric music as Flamenco, POP or Latin music but there wasn’t a place where we could feel identified with. We have always been driven by the underground music culture and what it represents. The freedom of being who you are and not being afraid of showing it.  We knew we wanted to create a place where we could help people discover this values, listen to quality music and at the same time change the stereotypes of our society to a more open minded, tolerant and give a real opportunity to alternative cultures which are actually the ones that help develop the collective consciousness and artistic scene of a city.”

The opening party features German techno legend Paul Kalkbrenner with a live show from Giorgia Angiuli, underground house grooves from the Mandar trio and Janeret. After that, the parties remain high quality and tasteful. Throughout July the acts include Enzo Siragusa, Traumer, Francesco Del Garda, Sweely, Anthea, Quest, Evan Baggs, Laurine & Cecilio, Seth Troxler, Dyed Soundorom, tINI, Giammarco Orsini, O.BEE, Tomas Station, Rakim Under, Dorado, Jamie Jones, Archie Hamilton, Giorgio Maulini, Chris Stussy, Reiss, Samuel Deep, Huerta, East End Dubs, Rich NxT, Rossko, Lola Haro, and Charlotte. August sees [a:rpia:r] and Praslea, Dan Andrei, Apollonia, Craig Richards b2b Nicolas Lutz, Gene on Earth, Sugar Free, Fonte, Mathew Jonson (live), Sonja Moonear, Priku, plus secret guests.

Málaga-Costa del Sol airport is connected to 133 destinations, with a total of 52 international airlines in operation making Sophie easy to get to from anywhere. It means there is no excuse not to hop on a plane and head off for a grown up and soul soothing party in paradise.

Mathew V

by the partae May 29, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Home base is Vancouver, Canada. I’ve been travelling a lot more recently, but it’s always nice to come home to the 604.

How did you first start playing music?

I was always singing around the house. At every family gathering, I would perform ‘Man I Feel Like A Woman’ by Shania Twain, and from there I caught the bug. I trained in opera and classical voice for 10 years after that.

What’s been happening recently?

I recently put out my EP “The Outer Circle” which was just nominated for a JUNO award, which is very cool and a bucket list moment for sure.

Your new single ‘Sick’ will be out on the 27th of May, what influenced the sound  and songwriting?

‘Sick’ is a bit of a follow up on ‘Give It All’ which is from my album ‘Two Faced.’ I worked on this song with the same production team and we had been trying to make another song for years, but we kept having to push back due to the pandemic. Finally we decided that there was no more waiting, and we made it work remotely.

What does ‘Sick’ mean to you?

‘Sick’ is a playful spin on the phrase ‘you make me sick.’ It is very tongue in cheek and dances around the theme of someone giving you butterflies. The best kind of sick in my opinion.

How did you go about writing ‘Sick’?

I was writing chorus ideas with my collaborator Josh Bogert who is a wonderful artist in his own regard. I knew that this idea would be perfect to take to the producers on this one.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with?

This was produced by my good friends Fly By Midnight who I am not only a fan of, but am so lucky enough to get to collaborate with. I knew after we made ‘Give It All’ that we needed to follow it up. I took the track to Kevin Peterson for Mastering who I  go to at any change I get. He’s the best.

How did you approach the recording process?

We made a lot of the demo over Zoom as Fly By Midnight were in LA and Josh and myself were in Vancouver. We recorded all of the vocals here and sent  everything down to the guys in LA to take it across the finish line.

You’ve received your first JUNO Award nomination for Adult Contemporary  Album of The Year for your fantastic EP, The Outer Circle, how do you feel  about this?

It is such a huge bucket list moment for me. I’m nominated with a bunch of artists whom I respect and hold in the highest regard. I’m taking in every moment.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Nick Wilson, Luca Fogale and Teddy Swims. I highly recommend you check them all out.

What do you like to do away from music?

I love cooking and baking a nice meal. I love any activity that requires me to step away from my phone and put all of my focus into something with no distractions.

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022?

We have a lot coming up for 2022 and 2023. I’m working on an exciting new  project over the summer, and I’ll be playing the historic Massey Hall with Royal Wood this upcoming October.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

Aroma Tea & Coffee in North Hollywood is both my favourite place for food and to  hangout. Wish I was there 24/7!

Nicky Romero Hints on New Sonic Direction For Festival Season with 4-track “Perception” EP. Out Now on Protocol Recordings

by the partae May 29, 2022
written by the partae

Artists: Nicky Romero
Title: Perception EP
Label: Protocol Recordings

Download / Stream

Nicky Romero gears up for summertime with his new EP “Perception,” featuring four tracks that showcase his sonic direction for the festival season. Fans will recognize “Lose My Mind” and “Pressure” as released earlier this year and featured in his Ultra Music Festival main stage set, which are accompanied in the compilation by brand new tracks “Hear Me Now” and “Work My Body.” Opening with soulful vocals and resonating bass, “Hear Me Now” has a distinct tech-house influence with a twist of old-school garage. Next up is “Work My Body,” which takes a more down and dirty approach to the same vein of sound with catchy vocal riffs and grimy synths. Nicky Romero has displayed many different sides of himself through artistic expression, from his big-room progressive days to his underground alter ego Monocule, and now he’s returning to his OG roots with dynamic house productions.

“Over the past years, I’ve been producing different kinds of genres within dance music. At the beginning of 2022, I went back to my roots and started to try out producing more groovy and housey tracks. When I could play Ultra Music Festival again this year as the first major festival after two years, I wanted to drop “Pressure,” “Lose My Mind,” and “Work My Body” to see the main stage crowd’s reaction. The reception of these three tracks was truly amazing, so I couldn’t wait to go back to the studio to work on more music, and this is when I produced “Hear Me Now,” which perfectly concludes the ‘Perception‘ EP” – Nicky Romero

After taking the world by storm with early hits such as “Legacy” with Krewella and the #1 single “I Could Be The One” with Avicii, Nicky Romero quickly proved that his talent is ever-evolving and here to stay. After launching his Protocol Recordings imprint in 2012, the renowned performer, producer, and label head continued his personal successes with a string of high-profile releases, ranging from collaborations with Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Timmy Trumpet and Steve Aoki to remixes for the likes of Robin Schulz, Kygo, Rita Ora, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix, Jess Glynne and more. While showcasing his label’s roster via his weekly Protocol Radio show, Nicky Romero continues to innovate and evolve, and with his annual “Nicky Romero & Friends” ADE showcase and the launch of Monocule alter-ego, he keeps proving his ability to turn into gold everything he touches.

Nicky Romero‘s forthcoming dates:

Snowfish Single ‘MAYBE’

by the partae May 27, 2022
written by the partae
NSW based band Snowfish present the first taste of their debut album The Monster Upstairs with their new single titled MAYBE.

Set for release on Friday 27th May 2022, Maybe is a step away from Snowfish’s usual edgy guitar riffs and drama-fuelled vocal melodies. Rather, over its 03.27 run time it builds into a crescendo which soars with its diverse vocal melodies and harmonies. The single is a slower, more emotive offering that allows each of the 3 brothers to showcase their range stylistically, and further highlight their innovation and authenticity.

Cementing their foothold on the Australian rock circuit as a band on the come up, the young band have received support from audiences and industry alike gaining over 40k collective streams, national airtime on commercial station Triple M and features on leading online rock sites including Hysteria Magazine, Amnplify, and Happy Magazine. Snowfish have also performed live across NSW, with an east-coast tour lined up for further into 2022 / 2023.

The Monster Upstairs album is slated for release in the second half of 2022.

JOHNNY HUNTER announce 9-date national album tour

by the partae May 27, 2022
written by the partae

“a lush eruption of cinematic passion and heavy-hearted emotion” – Atwood Magazine

“a veritable stadium anthem filled with passion, melancholy and drama” – Backseat Mafia

“poised to cement their cult-classic status – Life Without Andy

“roar to life with an electric grunt when the chorus kicks in” – NME Australia

“this one certainly hits the spot” – Ticketmaster AU

Sydney cult heroes Johnny Hunter have today announced their first national headline tour, which will see them play nine dates around the country in July. The shows will celebrate the release of the four-piece’s highly-anticipated debut album Want, out 24 June via Cooking Vinyl Australia.

Tickets are on sale HERE. Pre-order the album HERE.

Renowned for their raucous performance style, Johnny Hunter will kick off the Want tour on the Gold Coast at Vinnies Dive on Friday 1 July, before making their way down the East Coast via Brisbane and Newcastle. The post-punk powerhouses will settle in for a hometown gig at Sydney’s beloved Oxford Art Factory, before touching down in Adelaide for the first time. They’ll continue with stops in Melbourne and Perth before wrapping up in Hobart – another first appearance. The tour comes off-the-back of the band’s double residency, which saw them fill Sydney’s Botany View Hotel and Melbourne’s Old Bar twice a week throughout March.

Emboldened by life’s uncertainties, Johnny Hunter’s forthcoming debut Want is a reminder that we all share what it is to be human, and must embrace our whole selves on the journey to self-actualisation. “Every song is a challenge we faced as a band and as individuals in realising who Johnny Hunter is and ultimately who we truly are”, shares frontman Nick Hutt. Produced by Jack Moffitt (The Preatures) and mixed by critically acclaimed engineer Adam Greenspan (IDLES, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), Want reimagines the sound of new wave and new romantics for the 21st century, fusing them into a surging 10-tracks that are as poetic as they are anthemic; as ferocious as they are vulnerable.

From the cathartic ‘Life’ to darkly hypnotic ‘The Floor’ or thunderous ‘Clover’, the theme of human connection underscores the entire album. “No matter how different we may seem…unbeknownst to what it is we want, we have all been naive, we have all strived to find our version of life, we all fear change, fear sadness, all amidst our own collective fading eternity.”

Rousing the listener to confront the inevitability of change head on, the most recent single ‘Dreams’ was featured across Best New Music lists and single reviews from the likes of Atwood Magazine, Earmilk, Purple Sneakers, Music Feeds and Ticketmaster AU. The track has been added to rotation on 2SER, and received airplay across 2XX, 4ZZZ, 979fm, FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide, triple j and triple j Unearthed to name a few.

Since emerging from the shadows of Sydney’s grim nightlife in 2019, Johnny Hunter have quickly risen to underground cult favourites, selling out rooms across Australia’s East Coast and winning audiences over supporting the likes of Jack White and The Saboteurs, City Calm Down and Polish Club to name a few. Their debut EP Early Trauma (2020) garnered critical praise and airplay around the country, citing influences and drawing comparisons to The Smiths, Joy Division and The Cure. Though their sound is rooted in nostalgia, their furiously honest songwriting and explosive live shows are undeniably made for now.

Yen Strange Releases New Single With Self-Directed Video

YEN STRANGE RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘EASY WAY OUT’
WITH SELF-DIRECTED VIDEO,
ANNOUNCED TO SUPPORT QUEEN P IN MELBOURNE & SYDNEY
“The world is sleeping on Yen Strange at the moment and that is criminal to me. Keep Yen Strange close, seriously, she is so talented.”
– Jack Saunders, BBC Radio 1“Beautiful, glistening bedroom pop with a goth edge” – Paper Magazine

“Yen Strange pairs her sweet voice with emo-sounding pop rock” – Nylon

“A pristine piece of bedroom pop” – Clash Magazine

“Shimmering, instantly relatable emo-anthems” – Ones to Watch

“The Australian solo artist manifests her own electronic indie” – Ladygunn

Yen Strange packs a punch with her new single ‘Easy Way Out’, which arrives today alongside an emotive, self-directed video.

Written by Yen Strange and produced by Alice Ivy, ‘Easy Way Out’ uniquely blends Yen’s punk and rap influences with honest lyricism and hooky melodies, making for another effortless indie anthem. The powerful, moving track channels Yen’s frustration over a toxic relationship.

“‘Easy Way Out’ is about a time I told someone I wanted to be with them and they asked me to just wait. Almost exactly a year on it became clear to me that everything he said was more of an act to try and distract himself from the reality of his own misery. I was an easy fix to his depression, a temporary drug that he used and abused until I just wasn’t cheap enough anymore. It was a pretty sad time and I remember sitting on my bed making this song on my laptop and thinking all I wanted to do was see him, I didn’t care that he perceived me in this way I thought things would get better if I tried harder.”

The accompanying video for ‘Easy Way Out’ was directed by Yen Strange and filmed by Jasper Burrows Millican and masterfully highlights the raw angst and emotion of the song.

With a string of popular singles to her name including debut ‘Donnie Darko’, ‘Go Away’ and a cover of Mallrat’s ‘Intro’, the Moruya-born, now Sydney-based singer-songwriter has won press support from the likes of Paper Magazine, Nylon, Ladygunn, The Forty-Five and NME. Her songs have received a huge 11 spins from BBC Radio 1 (with host Jack Saunders a big champion of her work), plus airplay across triple j, triple j Unearthed and community stations like FBi and Radio Adelaide. At DSPs, they’ve appeared on a range of playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Front Left, Indie Pop, SALT and Pop n Fresh, and Apple Music’s New Music Daily, New In Pop, New In Alternative and Pop Chill. When The Horn Blows’ also highlighted Yen Strange on their ‘Ones To Watch’ list for 2022.

ABOUT YEN STRANGE
Growing up in small towns was a blessing and a curse for Yen. In an attempt to distance herself from cliques at school – where she struggled to fit in – she’d seek solace in the music room on her lunch breaks. She had fostered a serious interest in music from the age of seven, studying piano and honing her vocal skills by singing along to songs on the radio in her dad’s car. (Singing lessons didn’t work out; she didn’t want to sing the ‘proper way’.)

At the age of 16, Yen moved from her hometown of Moruya to the larger Wollongong and started playing in local bands, but found her walls crashing down as the aspirations of her bandmates never quite seemed to sync up to her own.  She began to hit roadblocks and experience spirals and depressive episodes, eventually hitting rock bottom and having a breakdown. Despite the hurdles though, Yen persisted and started to pen tracks that she could be proud of, on her own. She now lives in Sydney.

Tour Announcement | Sunk Loto Announce Sydney & Melbourne Shows + Second Brisbane Show

by the partae May 27, 2022

Australian metal pioneers Sunk Loto sold out both Queensland shows within 24 hours of announcing their return to the live stage. In addition to adding a second night in Brisbane, they plan to keep up the momentum in Sydney and Melbourne by announcing shows for later this year.

If you had to list the most important heavy Australian albums of all time, it’s likely that Sunk Loto’s 2003 release Between Birth and Death would be near the top, and metal aficionados still consider the band as one of the most influential home-grown bands of the early 2000s.

Signed to Sony in 1999 when the average age of the band members was 16, Sunk Loto released an EP and two albums over their 10-year history. They toured the world with bands like Korn, Linkin Park, Suicidal Tendencies, Perfect Circle, Deftones, Sevendust and staked their claim as an epic live band at festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Vans Warped Tour, Splendour in The Grass, and Falls.

Now, after 15 years apart, Sunk Loto are geared up to announce a return to the stage with shows in Queensland this winter, before heading further south later this year. The shows will feature all four original members who have come together to reconnect with their fans, entertain, have fun, and reignite their love of playing music.

After “five years of silence” (times 3) in a live setting, definitely don’t miss the chance to catch Sunk Loto back at it when they finally return to a live setting near you. And with the previously announced two Queensland shows selling out in less than 24 hours, you can guarantee these new dates will go fast – don’t delay, snag your ticket today to one of the biggest shows of 2022!

Tickets are on-sale now.

Nervous Light

by the partae May 27, 2022
written by the partae

Where are you currently based?

Brisbane, Australia

How did you first start playing music?

Each of us are a bit different, but we’re all self taught and picked things up fairly young playing  and learning how to write in bands and high school and just kind of snowballed from there. Our  bassist Rich moved to vocals after years of playing and fronted a metalcore band called The  Name Of A Ghost and Antony and I (Jordan) played together in a pop punk band called Malibu  Stacy for a long time before this project started to come together in early 2020.

What’s been happening recently for you guys?

Aside from the single release, we’re finally getting to play regular shows after live music being  so stop start from the time we started the band. It took a year from when we released our first  single Haunt to being able to play live due to lockdowns, restrictions and everything else. We

recently had the pleasure of opening for The Beautiful Monument and Belle Haven here in  Brisbane which was awesome.

Your latest single ‘Coffee Stains and Picture Frames’ is out now, what or who influenced  the sound and songwriting?

Rich had always wanted to write a song with a similar baseline to English Summer Rain by  Placebo, so we’d come to a writing session and he had the main riff and chorus chords as well  as the basic outline of the song with some cool space and dynamics ready to go. Between us  we came up with the lead guitars in the chorus and second verse which were very reminiscent  of Movements and their record No Good Left To Give, particularly the closing track and I think  my constant thrashing of that record at the time also inspired a lot of the flow and cadence of  the vocal melodies when we got to those after working together on the lyrics.

Where and when did you record/produce/master and who did you work with /How did you  approach the recording process?

We had spent a lot of time with our go to producer and collaborator Jake Randall (Joy In Motion/  Sol Audio) in 2020 and 2021 out of his home in Bulimba. We’d been working on the songs that  would become our EP Bury What’s Left Of My Heart In Your Backyard and had just never  stopped writing in between, so as those session went on it turned into us having 9 or 10 songs  going, this being one of them. Given how fun and easy it is to work with Jake and how he brings  out the best in us and has a great ear and mind for what we’re doing, we didn’t really have to  think twice on this one.

Please tell us about any future music that’s in the works:

We still have about 5 or 6 songs left over from those 2021 recording sessions which will see the  light of day in the near future. Because we had such a healthy backlog of song ideas that we  were excited about, we just recorded them and figured we would worry about a release strategy  later. Theres a few little bits and pieces left to do on those, but I would say a new EP won’t be  far away before we dive back into the myriad of demos we have new and old.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

Rich- the new Silverstein record, Can’t Swim, Otoboke Beaver and The Smiths  Antony- Casey, Nothing, nowhere and The Home Team

Jordan- Counterparts, Mason Dane, Static Dress and 100 Gecs

What do you like to do away from music?

Rich is a new father to twin boys, Antony likes to hang out with his dog and suss new Coffee  spots and I can usually be found watching wrestling (AEW forever, WWE never)

What’s planned for the remainder of 2022?

All systems go! Plenty of new music, shows and we’re hoping to be able to cross state boarders  and see some of our old friends and favorite food spots in Sydney and Melbourne before the  year is out.

Favourite food and place to hangout?

As a band that is two thirds Vegans, Netherworld here in Brisbane is the go to spot! Incredible  food for everybody’s lifestyle choices, great beers and sodas and everything from pinball and  gaming machines to board games. If anyone from Netherworld is reading, we’d love to play a  show. DMs are open. Oh, and also bring back the duck roll, thank you in advance.

KING BROWN bring a smooth swagger in latest single ‘MY LOVE’ A new era for the WA indie-rockers.

by the partae May 26, 2022
written by the partae

At the annex between suave and grit, WA rockers King Brown return with latest single ‘My Love’. Steadfast rhythms guide an unctuous dive-bar sound whilst honey coated melodies soften and smooth.

Pulling aural influences from The Black Keys, Verge Collection, and The Reubens, King Brown add their own hugely accomplished, and impeccably stylish, take into the Aussie rock arena.

“Thematically ‘My love’ is a song about being completely lovesick towards someone. Feelings that are so intense that you’d do anything for them, but in the back of your mind being very insecure and jealous of anyone else because you’re afraid of losing them.” King Brown

A truly immersive listen, ‘My Love’ will have your heart aching in sympathy for the lovesick melodies from Brendon, yet grooving under a hypnotic spell from the surrounding instrumentation. You’ll notice King Brown’s power lies in their ability to craft rich soundscapes that take on a palpable essence that is captivating from the very first chord.

This release sees King Brown step into their full potential marking a pivotal new era for the band. “We’ve completely changed the dynamic within the band. With Brendon stepping up from behind the drums to be the fulltime frontman, it’s enhanced our live shows phenomenally. We’ve turned a new page and we’re so excited to see where we can take it.” King Brown

Recorded at Vision Studios and Bumchic Studios in Claremont, WA. The resulting simmering sound of ‘My Love’ was mixed by Ben Salmin (Old Mervs, Humble Armada) and Mastered by Simon Struthers  (Karnivool, Sly Withers).

“Production wise we changed things up a little, this is the first song almost completely recorded and released by ourselves. We recorded half of the song at vision studios and the rest at Ben’s Bumchic Studio. Vision studio allowed us to capture that large room sound for the drums and guitars. With Ben mixing this track too, and Shaun creating the artwork, we’re pretty much a fully inhouse band.” King Brown

Crank up the radio and cast a trail of dust as you cruise into the setting sun with the new age of King Brown.

PRAISE FOR KING BROWN

“Fremantle’s King Brown combine classic rock with a modern indie sensibility in a way that is sure to intrigue and tantalise fans of both styles”
Dan Condon,  Double J

“Plenty to love here. That you’re into the Allah-Lahs is one. That searing guitar is another. I’ve got about 12 more, but that will do for now.”
Richard Kingsmill, triple j

“This one stands out with a thick and dusty aura. I think that guitar solo is talking to me, nattering some mischievous things in my ear like a rock devil atop my shoulder.”
Dave Ruby Howe, triple j Unearthed

“And if the band’s ability to weave a killer soundscape doesn’t impress you, their unique style of storytelling will.”
Hysteria Mag

“cranking up the wireless, slamming it on the bonnet of the kingswood and cracking a beer after a big day in the surf. and yes, king brown is supplying the soundtrack.”
Joe Kahn, triple j

AIRBEAT ONE Festival 2022 releases full line up and announces 3-day ticket special for 99 Euros The best line-up in Germany at one of the most unbeatable festival prices in all of Europe

by the partae May 26, 2022
written by the partae

AIRBEAT ONE Festival drops an incredible music and entertainment bomb. While announcing the full incredible lineup for this year’s edition, festival organizers also announced that the price for the 3-day ticket will be reduced to an amazing 99.00 Euros. This incredible offer was only made possible because a pool of sponsors and partners refinanced the tickets to thank festival-goers, and support the festival. This makes AIRBEAT ONE 2022 one of the best value-for-money festivals throughout the whole of Europe while delivering a summer lineup that is certainly in the top three of any festival throughout the entire continent.

Over 300 artists across six stages in a lineup unmatched by anything else, this year’s festival is easily the largest electronic music festival in Northern Germany. The Main Stage lineup is packed with global superstars such as Kygo, Marshmello, DJ Snake, and Tiesto. Superstar DJs and producers Kygo and Marshmello will play their only German shows this year exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE. Another exclusive main stage act in the Neustadt-Glewe is the acclaimed trio ‘3 Are Legend’, consisting of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Steve Aoki, who are all due to perform one of their extremely rare b2b sets.

An incredible 37 of this year’s total 100 DJ Mag Top 100 DJs will be playing at AIRBEAT ONE. Known as the world’s most important DJ ranking poll, 19 of the 27 DJs playing on the Main Stage feature in the DJ Mag Top 100. The main stage lineup includes prominent DJ Mag Top 100 DJ stars such as Afrojack, Armin Van Buuren, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, DJ Snake, Don Diablo, KSHMR, Kygo, Marshmello, NERVO, Oliver Heldens, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Timmy Trumpet, Vini Vici, W&W, Bassjackers, Danny Avila, Mariana Bo, and Will Sparks. No other festival in Germany can boast as high a standard of DJs this festival season.

With Boris Brechja, Charlotte de Witte, Claptone, Fisher, and Vintage Culture, the new Arena Stage also delivers many of DJ Mag’s Top 100 house and techno music superstars. And with Elrow announced as an AIRBEAT ONE exclusive stage host, there’s something exciting, and alluring for everyone at this year’s festival. The most colorful and unique party label hailing from Spain will feature exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE this year, promising to bring with them top headliners such as Kšlsch, Camelphat, and the iconic Paul Kalkbrenner.

The legendary Terminal Stage features other headline acts from DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll including Alan Walker, ALOK, Fedde Le Grande, Lost Frequencies, Morten, Nora En Pure, Quintino, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, and VIZE. In addition, there are German superstars such as Alle Farben, Topic, Gestšrt aber GeiL, Lari Luke and Robin Schulz, chart smashers such as Hugel and Ofenbach, and many many more.

Later on, the Terminal Stage also offers top international headliners from bass to the dubstep genre, genre superstars such as Tchami, Malaa, Zeds Dead, Moksi and Netsky. While American superstar Dillon Francis completes this year’s unforgettable Terminal Stage lineup. Francis will play his only festival show in Germany, exclusively at AIRBEAT ONE.

AIRBEAT ONE has secured another German exclusive for the 2022 festival season. The world’s leading hardstyle label Q-dance’s only German appearance this year will be at AIRBEAT ONE. With a lineup that boasts headline superstars such as Angerfist, Brennan Heart, and Miss K8, three acts that have also appeared in DJ Mag’s Top 100 poll. More superstars of the hardstyle genre will also be performing, including Coone, Headhunterz, Korsakoff, Paul Elstak, Radical Redemption, Ran-D, Warface, Wildstylez, Zatox, and plenty more. You can be sure they will shake the Gladiator Stage to its very foundations.

The unforgettable second stage of AIRBEAT ONE Festival expands from the spectrum of Goa and PsyTrance by adding iconic trance artists to this year’s lineup. Trance and all-round electronic dance legend Ferry Corsten, a consummate DJ Mag Top 100 leader will be playing, other trance icons such as Cosmic Gate, Markus Schulz, Morten Granau, and Sander Van Doorn (Presents Purple Haze) are helping expand on the already incredible lineup of PsyTrance DJs that include Ace Ventura, Alpha9, Aly & Fila, Andrew Rayel, Animato, Astrix, Avalon, Ben Nicky, Berg, Blastoys, Bliss, Bubble. Captain Hook, Claudinho Brasil, Fabio Fusco, and Ghost Rider.

„After two years of the Corona enforced cancellation of AIRBEAT ONE, we were insanely looking forward to being able to celebrate a carefree festival without the fear of restrictions. Unfortunately, with the war in Ukraine, inflation, rising prices, and additional expenses, circumstances have arisen this year that make it difficult for many to celebrate carefree. Therefore, we have talked to our sponsors, who have agreed to financially lower the tickets for the benefit of festival-goers and the festival itself. Therefore we are now able to lower the price of the 3-day festival tickets to a sensational 99.00 Euros, so that as many people as possible will be able to afford the small festival vacation in Neustadt-Glewe (and can party and experience incredible music for a few days, much like we did before the days of Corona and before the war)“ explains AIRBEAT ONE event manager Sebastian Eggert.

This price drop makes AIRBEAT ONE Festival 2022 one of, if not ‘the’ most affordable three-day festival in Germany and across Europe. AIRBEAT ONE boasts a lineup that can only be matched by electronic music festivals such as Creamfields or Tomorrowland. And festival ticket value vs quality of performer will never be matched again. This ultimate state-of-the-art production of one of the ultimate super-festivals in Europe should not be missed by any music fan this summer.

3-day tickets for AIRBEAT ONE Festival, which takes place from July 6th to 10th at the Neustadt-Glewe airfield in Mecklenburg – Vorpommern, are available from 99.00 Euros at tickets.airbeat-one.de.

Jitwam announces new album ‘Third’ out July 22 via ROYA, listen to infectious new single ‘Confidence’

manipulated vocals – to create dusty, soulful house tracks filled with character”
Resident Advisor

“An inventive sound that blazes new trails”
Bandcamp

“A magnetic journey through a vast array of styles”
KEXP

“Musical nomad”
Purple Sneakers

“Each beat leaves you wishing it would go on for a little longer”

“Basement funk groove”
Test Pressing Magazine

Today, producer and vocalist Jitwam announces his forthcoming record Third via Roya out this July 22. With the news he also shares his latest single and video ‘Confidence’. WATCH HERE + LISTEN HERE.

If there’s one thing we have taken from Jitwam’s sonic output, it’s his signature style that covers a broad spectrum of all sounds, bouncing between dance-floor tempos, jazz influences and soulful beatscapes. ‘Confidence’ adds another high-powered layer to Jitwam’s back catalogue, expanding on his beat-making abilities to incorporate tight production with modulated vocals, launching his craft into new heights. Rich in melody and infectious in rhythm, ‘Confidence’ pays homage to time spent in London and New York, drawing from the bustling metropolitan influences that have allowed Jitwam to understand and experiment with busy instrumentalism.

Speaking to the release, Jitwam reveals “Confidence is that swag in your step. A mantra to your true self to get up and shake the cosmic blues from your head to your toes. A psychedelic brasilian samba-funk odyssey to wake up your booty, and wake up your mind. All u gotta, is do it once now…”. The single also arrives with a visual accompaniment directed by Vivek Vadoliya, which brings to life Jitwam’s laid back approach to elements of house funk with movements that shift in energy as the song progresses.

Watch: ‘Confidence’ (Official Video)

‘Confidence’ follows Jitwam’s last single ‘Brooklyn Ballers’ which garnered support from the likes of NME, Clash Magazine, Pilerats, Sniffers, DJ Mag, Purple Sneakers and Balamii Radio amongst others, alongside a house-fuelled remix from New York’s musclecars. Evoking memories of finding peace within the chaos of daily life, Third skips across genres nimbly with a drunken bravado collecting along the way influences from Latin music, soul, punk, and disco. ‘Confidence’ is another showcase of how Jitwam has carved out a path unto himself – a welcome and indulgent path to ruminate and wander down.

For Jitwam, his career in music has always felt predestined. The first record he bought – a $2 blank white-label vinyl – turned out to be a Moodymann track, a discovery he made around the same time he found out his music would be featured on Moodymann’s DJ Kicks compilation. Finding success through two LPs, ‘ज़ितम सिहँ’ and Honeycomb, and acclaimed tracks including ‘WhereYouGonnaGo’ and ‘busstop’ Jitwam has become a mainstay of the underground, having guested on NTS, WorldWide FM, BBC6 Music amongst others. Cementing himself as a global sector, live performer and label front at The Jazz Diaries, he has also remixed Laraaji, collaborated with Folamour – whose Boiler Room has had nearly a million views – as well as Cosmo’s Midnight on Defected Records, alongside a  feature track on the renowned compilation ‘Fabric Presents… Maribou State’.

Jitwam has gone on to captivate crowds and share stages with the likes of Kamaal Williams, Anoushka Shankar, Roy Ayers, Ross From Friends and soon, appearances at RISING Melbourne and VIVID LIVE. More tour details below.

Saturday 3rd December 2022 – Sydney – Sydney Showground

Sunday 4th December 2022 – Perth – Burswood Park

Melbourne, AU (May 25, 2022) – Following an epic debut in 2019, Festival X will return to kick off summer 2022, this time expanding its reach to five cities across five dates in November and December. It will be the first summer festival to land on the Australian calendar and will mark a welcome return to large-scale festivals following the hiatus due to the COVID19 pandemic.

The party returns to Melbourne and Sydney but this year will move from Brisbane to Gold Coast’s Alabaster Sports Fields, as well as two new locations to the tour – Perth’s sprawling Burswood Park, on the bank of the Swan River and the beautiful Bonython Park, situated between Port Road and the River Torrens in Adelaide.

Festival X will once again represent the best in Hip Hop and Electronic Dance music across multiple, hand-crafted stages hosting global superstars alongside the hottest local talent. It’s big, and it’s back, with a killer lineup…

Festival favourite and multiple Grammy, Billboard, and Brit Award winner, Calvin Harris features in his second appearance at Festival X; hot off the heels of his fifth studio album announcement out later this year, with a slew of hits and a brand-new show. Multiple Grammy award winner and female Hip Hop superstar, Megan Thee Stallion is headed down under for her first-ever performances and ‘hot girl summer’ in Australia. Chicago-based, Trap-N-B star Don Toliver is headed to our shores for the first time, following multiple successful releases through Travis Scott’s iconic Cactus Jack records.

Trance aficionado and local hero MaRLo will also top off a bill, after record-selling 25k+ strong crowds (and live streaming to millions more) at Altitude Sydney and Melbourne this summer gone – the biggest production ever for him.

Global icons will take to the stages to bring the party atmosphere and showcase the hottest in new and classic electronic dance music in a lineup finely crafted with a curated selection of festival faves and first-time innovators.

Tech-house trailblazer and in-demand DJ of the moment, Green Velvet returns to Australia, alongside Nina Kraviz with her signature 4/4 techno! Electro-rave mainstay Boys Noize is also set to let loose following his year-defining album, +/- in 2021. Progressive superstar Nora En Pure from Switzerland returns for her first performance in Australia since elevating to legendary status after her covid global streams. UK sensations Solardo return for the party, along with the new wave sound of fellow sensation Prospa.

Over to the groove connoisseurs – new US sensation John Summit joins us as well as Franky Rizardo – who will deliver fresh and funky, filtered house goodness, together with french bass/house Tchami, the incredible bass sounds of Sub Focus and UK hit machine, Wilkinson. Australian duo Choomba will give it a nudge this year and lay down their eclectic rolling rhythms.

Australia’s very own heavyweights will fly the flag high amidst the internationals, with multi-platinum record holder Luude bringing his eclectic performance to each city, featuring his 200M+ collective hit, Down Under ft. Colin Hay.

Sydney’s Anna Lunoe takes time out from her radio show job at Apple Music to bring her boundary-breaking curation to the stage alongside Australia tech-princess Laura King and party boy Tyson Obrien. Queensland’s progressive rising star Taglo, signed to Armada and Anjunadeep, joins Sydney bad-boys Sunset Bros.

Bringing rap vibes is new kid on the block Babyface Mal and festival favourite Badrapper.

Trance icons Cosmic Gate return with Key 4050, John O’Callaghan and Bryan Kearney’s sensational duo act alongside first-time female up and comer Nifra and the angelic, soaring, hit-bound Haliene. Psy-trance fusion Blastoyz rounds out the trance offering set for high-energy protons!
