Scene & Heard Festival announces new date & revised lineup – Spiderbait, Tumbleweed, The Porkers & Kid Kenobi join the bill

by the partae February 10, 2022
written by the partae

The Scene & Heard team are gearing up to bring festivalgoers one helluva show in 2022, and we can’t wait!   With a new date locked in for Sunday March 13 at Wickham Park, with this news comes the announcement of some new friends set to join us, which we’re sure you’re going to love.

Joining Grinspoon, Ratcat, Frenzal Rhomb, COG and Caligula, we welcome back festival favourites – the hard-hitting, mighty rock trio that is, Spiderbait.  With seven albums (5 of which went Top 20), 2x ARIA Awards (from a whopping 19 nominations) and a stack of radio hits under their belts, including the #1 chart-topper Black Betty, you’ll get nothing but a blistering performance from this acclaimed super-charged unit when they blast out fan favourites & classics such as Buy Me a Pony, Calypso, Monty, Black Betty and more…

Also rolling into Wickham Park will be none other than Australia’s finest alternative psych-fuzz-rock acts, Tumbleweed.  Throughout the nineties/early noughties, if you didn’t come across the 5-piece at a packed-out gig, festival or performing alongside the likes of Nirvana, Iggy Pop, Fugazi etc… where were you?  Celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, the ‘weed will no doubt have plenty of material to choose from when they hit the stage.  From their five classic albums, Tumbleweed, Galactaphonic, Return to Earth, Mumbo Jumbo & Sounds from the Other Side, featuring standout crowd faves Sundial, Atomic, Daddy Long Legs and Carousel…through to the band’s latest singles Rebellion & Shadowland, this will be one performance you won’t want to miss.

Adding to the mix will be our very own hometown Ska-Punk heroes, The Porkers.  Always a favourite on the live circuit, from local & international festivals (Vans Warped USA) to sharing stages with the likes of Rancid, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, No Doubt & Bad Manners, you’re in for a damn good time when Pete Porker and the band pull out favourites such as Too Big for Your Boots, Goin’ Off, Aloha Steve & Danno, through to new singles The Good Egg, Big Baby Man and more…

Providing the killer beats and plenty of grooves over on the Don’t Come Monday stage – you’ll get critically acclaimed, ARIA Award nominated breakbeats DJ Kid Kenobi, as well as the DISCOVERY “DAFT PUNK TRIBUTE” SHOW and MINX…and there’s more to be announced.

We’re here to stay – thanks for holding onto your tickets in support of the artists and our much-loved live music industry.  Big thanks also to the artists who have supported us along the way.  We look forward to seeing you all at Scene & Heard 2022.

Tickets purchased for the original date are valid for the March 13 event.

OZTIX will be in touch with all ticket holders on Monday February 14 regarding refund requests.

BODY TYPE RETURN WITH ‘SEX & RAGE’ + ANNOUNCE DEBUT ALBUM + SIGNING TO POISON CITY RECORDS EVERYTHING IS DANGEROUS BUT NOTHING’S SURPRISING LP OUT MAY 20 VIA POISON CITY RECORDS

by the partae February 10, 2022
written by the partae

Today Body Type drop their first new music in three years, ‘Sex & Rage‘ with the reveal of their debut album, Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising, out May 20 via Poison City Records. LISTEN + WATCH ‘SEX & RAGE’ HERE.

Rife with frisky guitars and skittish percussion that soars into the chorus, ‘Sex & Rage‘ is a corrosive display of extremes. The doggerel of desire, angst, and euphoria set alight with a rousing plea for exuberance and exhilaration in the face of banality and boredom. Moulding the feel-good indie prowess that saw the band fast rise, ‘Sex & Rage‘ ushers in a new era of Body Type. A ragged rock-punk hybrid, savagely unapologetic in intent and delivery.

Speaking to the release, vocalist Sophie shares “‘Sex & Rage’ is a reflection on finding passion amidst feverish banality. When you are uninspired, when you feel sad that the general public would rather look at their phone screens than what’s hanging on the walls of the Louvre; when lovers leave you just like they always do and everything feels like a cliché – remember the feelings that set you aflame, and the things that make those feelings happen. For me, it’s Body Type and cryptic crosswords.”

Named after and dedicated to writer Eve Babitz‘s cult novel, ‘Sex & Rage‘ is a culmination of the world that Body Type will birth on Everything Is Dangerous But Nothing’s Surprising. In the wake of back-to-back tours and releases, Sophie McComish, Annabel Blackman, Cecil Coleman, and Georgia Wilkinson-Derums regrouped in early 2020, to record their debut album eight days – shortly before they would become separated by the pandemic.

With the release Body Type reconvene their collaborative relationship with music video director Madeline Purdy. Speaking to the visual elements, she reveals “We wanted to show an overabundance of unorthodox, freakish human beauty, but have it stop before total chaos. The strict confines of an audition room setting tinged every character with an inherent yearning to be liked by their audience. The clip had to show that sex and rage are inherent in every human being, but create different characters of us all. Despite that, we’re all on the same stage, singing the same song.”

Like Babitz’s prose, the album is exultant, effusive, playful, cutting, and maybe most significantly, incandescent in its fury. It’s an album all about yanking back control, embracing abandon and purging despair, told through the grizzly margins of rock and punk. Recorded and mastered by Jonathan Boulet, and entirely self-funded, the album sounds joyfully anarchic, bursting with life and autonomy.

Andrew Hayden, the owner of record store and label Poison City Records, is thrilled to announce the news of the band’s signing. He shares, “We fell in love with Body Type after coming across their early EPs a while back – the tracks ’Stingray’ and ‘Palms’ felt especially infectious and exciting, so obviously we’re delighted to be working with Body Type on their debut album this year! Body Type’s attitude and approach to the wide world of independent music is a great fit for Poison City and musically we hear a magical blend of soulful indie-rock and fierce angular-pop that feels urgent and relevant to these modern times.”

Since first forming in 2016, Body Type have shared acclaimed EPs, EP1 and EP2 to global fever and critical acclaim from DIY, NME, Dork, The Line Of Best Fit, The FADER, Stereogum, KEXP, Apple Music’s Matt Wilkinson, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, triple j’s Declan Byrne and many more. In between support stages with Fontaines D.C., Big Thief, Cate Le Bon, POND, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Frankie Cosmos, Rolling Blackouts Coast Fever and more, the group have also performed across SXSW, The Great Escape, and headline tours in the US and UK, including a recorded session at the BBC‘s Maida Vale studios.

‘Sex & Rage‘ is out now, buy/stream it here.

SorBaes: Double Dip!
Sidney Myer Music Bowl – 13 March 2022

DJ and designer Soju Gang (Gunai/Kurnai, Yorta Yorta and Wiradjuri) and Footscray Community Arts are excited to announce the delicious line-up for Live at the Bowl’s SorBaes: Double Dip! on Sunday 13 March.

The 2021 event saw some of the most exciting acts of Naarm come together in one massive mini festival. This March, they’re doing it all again, but with a bigger serving!

“SorBaes: Double Dip! is about bringing together and celebrating not only Melbourne’s, but Australia’s diverse, genre-evolving music scene. There’s so many different spaces that thrive and co-exist here that everyone may not know about – so I feel like SorBaes is an opportunity for me to pull back the curtain and share that with everyone: the beauty of opening yourself up to new sounds and vibrations, and even more, the importance of supporting our local talent here,” said Soju Gang.
Performing live at the all ages event this year are Barkaa + Baro Sura + Jerome Farah + Kira Puru + Lay + Mulalo + Young Rorty + DJs Mirasia + Smilez + Soju Gang + Swerv.

“Footscray Community Arts’ mission is all about creating greater representation for artists who have been historically excluded from mainstream arts and culture. By collaborating with Arts Centre Melbourne on SorBaes: Double Dip!, we are helping profile some of Australia’s best musicians in an accessible event for music lovers of all ages,” said Footscray Community Arts Artistic Director and Co-CEO Daniel Santangeli.

Along with music to make you melt, food trucks, curated art spaces and market stalls will be on site to add to your SorBaes experience.

“SorBaes: Double Dip! provides a space for audiences to connect with the next generation of musicians, artists, DJs and performers. This is an important opportunity for artists after a year or two of lost gigs. Soju Gang has curated a stacked line-up that is bound to remind punters here in Melbourne why we are known for hyping incredible musical talent. Come down and support local acts!” said Footscray Community Arts Music Producer Paul Gorrie.

Tickets are on sale now for $15 (including booking fee) with $2 from every ticket sold being donated by Arts Centre Melbourne to The Dhadjowa Foundation. Founded by Apryl Day, daughter of the late Aunty Tanya Day, The Dhadjowa Foundation is an organisation that supports and amplifies the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families whose loved ones have died in custody. The Dhadjowa Foundation is currently auspiced by Ngarrimili Ltd, a Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR) charity which can receive donations that are tax deductible.

Footscray Community Arts is an independent creative precinct in Melbourne’s West; a space for contemporary art, conversations and community. It’s a place where artists are empowered, and audiences connect through creative experiences. Our vibrant annual program includes performances, exhibitions, workshops, talks and festivals, and is led by artists with bold ideas. Through art, Footscray Community Arts advocates for change and a new perspective on Australia’s collective identity.

Live at the Bowl is an open-air performance series at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl running from January – April 2022. From home-grown favourites to international acts, audiences can enjoy a stunning program of music, dance, circus, community-led and family-friendly events right in the middle of Melbourne. Created by Arts Centre Melbourne, Live at the Bowl aims to bring joy to audiences and invigorate the creative sector. As we emerge from yet another year of closure, the second series is a significant moment for live performance.

POLARIS SUMMER TOUR UPDATE! ALPHA WOLF REPLACE MAKE THEM SUFFER ON UPCOMING SUMMER TOUR TOUR DATES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED TO MAY IN WA, SA & NSW DUE TO ON-GOING COVID RESTRICTIONS

by the partae February 8, 2022
written by the partae
Sydney metalcore titans Polaris are packing their bags and heading back on the road in February, March & May with some great friends in tow. The Summer Tour will see them hitting all national cities with very special guests Alpha Wolf, Justice For The Damned and Mirrors.

Make Them Suffer sadly have to withdraw from the Summer Tour due to WA borders still remaining closed. They have been replaced by Alpha Wolf. The Summer Tour dates have been postponed to May in WA, SA and NSW due to the on-going COVID restrictions in those states. All updated tour dates are below.

In 2021, The Death Of Me was an ARIA-nominated, #3 ARIA Album chart debut record which had glowing reviews from critics and fans and saw Polaris sell-out the biggest national headline tour of their career.

It’s been an incredible ride for Polaris with countless sold-out headline tours of Australia, as well as supporting Architects and Parkway Drive around the country; five runs throughout Europe (including a series of arena shows supporting Architects and a slew of high-profile summer festival spots); three separate US tours; not to mention performing at the Download Festival plus Unify Gathering in Australia and most recently headlining Knight & Day Festival.

To become the head of the pack, it takes heart and determination. Over the last 24 months, Melbourne metalcore juggernauts Alpha Wolf have proven they have all in abundance. 2020 saw the release of their sophomore album ‘a quiet place to die’, that landed #6 on the ARIA charts and a nomination for Best Heavy Album at the ARIA awards. Through all the chaos these last few years have been able to throw at the band, they’ve still managed to play multiple headline runs of sold out shows, secured places on some of the biggest festivals in Australia, and set to embrak on their takeover of America in March.

Justice For The Damned have come a long way since their early days at Blacktown Masonic in Western Sydney, methodically planning their path, honing their craft with two ground breaking albums, touring relentlessly across the globe and supporting some of leading artists in the game such as Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, Thy Art Is Murder and Knocked Loose. Remember these words, Justice is forever!

Opening the bill, will be Gippsland’s finest in Mirrors, who have gone from strength to strength since the release of their 2019 EP, Cold Sanctuary. Landing festival slots such as Knight and Day Festival, Unify Gathering to supporting international household names such as Wage War, Crystal Lake, The Devil Wears Prada and most recently inking a massive deal with Australia’s leading heavy label Resist Records.

Polaris always delivers and the Summer tour will be no different, so don’t miss out on what promises to be the metalcore tour of the year!

Missed out on Splendour tickets? Don’t worry, Secret Sounds has got your back! Splendour’s Official Sideshows of 2022 are finally here and set to roll into venues around the country this July!

This monster pile of tours is the biggest Official Sideshow announcement in the history of Splendour, so be sure to hold your hat as you get your head around this one…

The plethora of headline dates includes much anticipated performances from bonafide rock’n’roll star and living legend Liam Gallagher and GRAMMY Nominated indie rock royalty Yeah Yeah Yeahs, alongside the pulsating sounds of pioneering UK producer and DJ Duke Dumont and the nimble wordplay and unpredictable rhyme patterns of one of the hottest acts in the world right now Jack Harlow.

Australia’s fave Yorkshire born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist YUNGBLUD will take his larrikin good vibes on tour, while British duo Jungle perform their life-affirming, dancefloor-igniting, sun-kissed new album. Mura Masa will show us why he’s won a GRAMMY, been shortlisted for an Ivor and made it onto Forbes’ 30 under 30 as Manchester’s most promising, Aitch will bring all his infectious energy and unrivalled flow.

Fiercely DIY and defiantly uncategorisable Tom Misch will take his loose, mellifluous sound on tour, while ever entertaining and versatile vocalist, producer, writer, director and performance artist Oliver Tree will bring his music to life for fans. Country recording artist Orville Peck will captivate with his deep baritone, strong musicianship and sincere storytelling as Dillon Francis ignites venues with his vibrant dance tracks and electrifying cuts, as rising superstar Tierra Whack unleashes her flavourful wordplay and boundless creativity on Aussie crowds.

LA-based rapper and producer JPEGMAFIA will hit our shores hot off the back of his fourth full-length album and genre-defying duo Sofi Tukker will be bringing their uniting and empowering critically acclaimed set. Catch the alternative tunes of Still Woozy, made with his homespun mix of acoustic and electronic instruments, or Brit Awards’ Rising Star Holly Humberstone as she moves audiences with her inimitable brand of songwriting and visionary creativity.

Biig Piig will impress with her confessional and genre-fluid modern pop. Listen in awe as Joy Crookes showcases her timeless vocals and storytelling or get ready to groove with the chaotic alt-pop majesty of Wet Leg as they support Yeah Yeah Yeahs (stay tuned for more touring news from this euphoric duo coming soon). Be sure to witness the pop prowess and “don’t mess with us” all-girl gang glow of Hinds as they hit Aus, and prepare to be stunned when renforshort performs her reflective and snappy tracks.

We told you it was BIG! See below for the low down on dates and cities for each tour. Presale for all shows starts 9am local Friday 11 February – sign up here to get first dibs. General onsale kicks off at 9am local Monday 14 February.

The Wombats – This Car Drives All By Itself (Official Video)

This news comes hot off the back of the Liverpudlian trio reaching #32 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2021 with their infectious electro-pop track ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’, making them the third most featured artist (15 songs in total) on the countdown since its inception – only behind Kanye West and Tame Impala. The Wombats released their latest single ‘This Car Drives All By Itself’ alongside their new album Fix Yourself, Not The World in January. The record hit #1 in the UK and was #2 Album and #1 Vinyl Album on the ARIA Charts – continuing the band’s ever-growing love affair with Australia. We’re so ready to catch the album live when The Wombats hit our shores!

Since their inception in 2013, The VANNS have been crafting music that not only stirs up a melting pot of indie and alt-rock influences, but delivers a fresh, modern sound that has seen them fast become one of the most in demand young bands on Australia’s east coast. Their thriving, bold and creative dynamic has seen the Wollongong legends open for the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Ocean Alley and Hippo Campus – now it’s time for them to add The Wombats to the list! That’s after they wrap up their own national headline tour throughout March and April.

There is nothing predictable about the remarkable rise of Jaguar Jonze. Her success stems from hard work and her pure creative vision, with singles ‘WHO DIED AND MADE YOU KING’ and ‘CUT’ the latest step in cementing her position in the cultural landscape. Jaguar Jonze has been the public artist voice of the Australian music industry’s #metoo movement, this advocacy has seen her receive the triple j Done Good Award, AIR Outstanding Achievement Award and named one of the 21 Most Inspiring Women of 2021 by Vogue Australia. Catch her impressive live show and see why this truly unique and iconic artist can’t be ignored when she plays with The Wombats in June.

So whaddaya waiting for? Tickets for The Wombats mammoth Aus shows are on sale now at secretsounds.com. Hop to it!

Following the incendiary trail blazed single ‘Smashmouth’ and their remix of Payday and Danny Brown, Eora/Sydney-based, Korean-Australian rap outfit 1300 (pron. “one-three-hundred”) have firmly marked their place on the music stage with their sweat-doused, subterrestrial take on music that switches between English and Korean with ease. Today, they take this dynamic to the next level, with their latest release ‘Oldboy’. LISTEN HERE + WATCH HERE.

Inspired by the classic Korean film Old Boy, 1300 expand on the intense shock value that comes with the film itself, as ‘Oldboy’ bursts into the listener’s ears with a loud hip-hop bassline that is merged with hyper pop elements. A dose of high-energy rap, ‘Oldboy’ is melodic in flow, unleashing an infectious delivery that puts their ability to transcend genre on full display. On the influence behind the track, 1300 explain “When we started working on the beat we were thinking of the track ‘Go Crazy’ and the reference to ‘Black and Yellow’. Then we added the theme to one of our favourite Korean films Old Boy (2003) and the rest is history.”

With the release comes a dynamic music video that is a rambunctious homage to the classic film, shot by Videohead (Phil Fresh, Lil Spacely, Mel Bailey) and directed by Raghav Rampal. On the collaboration, Rampal says, “Our main goal with this video was to pay homage to the 2003 original Oldboy by Park Chan-wook, but 1300-ify it. The movie is so iconic and stylised, and has a lot of jaw-dropping scenes, so our approach was to pick the scenes we thought were the most iconic, and put each rapper into those scenes, as if they’re Oh Dae-su, so it would feel like the movie. The team (Tara, Elle, Maggie & Elijah) put a lot of work into re-creating the locations, costume and make-up for the perfect 1300-to-Oldboy balance, which all came alive through Tom’s cinematography, and Adam’s editing. It was also just the funnest shoot we’ve all had!”

Transposing the energy of their records to an exhilarating, boisterous live show, 1300 have already claimed a slew of notable support slots, appearing alongside Genesis Owusu, PNAU, Shady Nasty, Jono Ma, Taka Perry, 3K, Kota Banks and more. Quickly consolidating their reputation as a multifaceted and burgeoning force in the scene, they have already amassed over 500,000 Spotify streams and garnered playlist support from triple j and triple j Unearthed as a Feature Artist, alongside earned praise from outlets for their “hip-hop-inspired brew that is as sharp as it is palatable” by Rolling Stone Australia, a “refreshing take on Korean rap” by Acclaim and “unmatchable chemistry” by Purple Sneakers amongst others.

Comprised of rappers rako, goyo, DALI HART, producer-singer Nerdie, and producer pokari.sweat, 1300 subsume the raw volatility of Soundcloud rap and the high-budget sheen of K-hip hop, formulating a sound that cannot be understood or defined in pure stylistic terms. Built from everything goes studio sessions, their music is instead caught in a state of endless dynamism that never ceases to electrify or surprise, bottling the potential of a group animated by their boundless creativity, the individual members coming together like particles in the Large Hadron Collider that is 1300. What ties it all together is the group’s uncompromising pursuit of raucous energy, a constant momentum, and intensity born in-studio sessions that is then given shape and sound through their music.

SPRING LOADED TO KICK OFF IN MELB NEXT SAT! “THIS IS A GOOD NEWS STORY ABOUT HOW THERE’S ACTUALLY A FESTIVAL GOING AHEAD” PHIL JAMIESON

by the partae February 3, 2022
written by the partae

Spring Loaded has well and truly declared a triumphant return to live music, with the iconic Aussie festival set to storm Hastings Foreshore Reserve on the Mornington Peninsula next Saturday February 12, and there are tickets still available. The colossal lineup is dripping in 90s Aussie alt rock nostalgia and boasts a haul of the decade’s most celebrated acts.

Sharing the event program today, gates will open at 12.30pm and Screamfeeder will kick things off at 1.45pm, before The Fauves jump on at 2.30pm, Custard at 3.15pm, Killing Heidi at 4pm, Frenzal Rhomb at 5pm, Regurgitator at 6pm, You Am I at 7.15pm and Grinspoon at 8.45pm to headline the ultimate day of Aussie rock.

The man who engineered this ripper opportunity for us all to relive our youth and celebrate the return of live music, Empire’s Marc Christowski is thrilled to be getting another Spring Loaded event away, saying, “We are beyond excited to finally be able to stage Spring Loaded on the Mornington Peninsula, it’s going to be a massive explosion of rock after two years of uncertainty. We can’t wait to party like it’s 1996 and bring you the bands you love from the 90s!”

“We only managed two Spring Loaded events last year before everything went crazy,” explains Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson. “Both gigs were quite emotional because it had been so long since anyone had seen anyone, especially in the backstage area.  Not just artists and band members, but crew and people we love, so it was a massive reunion backstage. Seeing grey hairs and beards, it’s a long way from Homebake ’98, but the music hasn’t changed.  What was really special about those gigs was the support and comraderie between all the groups and then to see a crowd that was excited to be there as well.”
Pumped to hit the Spring Loaded stage at Hastings Foreshore Reserve, Jamieson says,“I can’t actually believe it’s real.  You Am I, Regurgitator, the best of the best – Frenzal, Killing Heidi, Custard,The Fauves, Screamfeeder… so you know, there’s nothing really bad about it, it’s hard to hate, and then you get me doing silly dancing and clapping, what could possibly go wrong?!  Hope to see you all there, this is a good news story about how there’s actually a festival going ahead!”

Covering all bases, the festival will be bustling with craft beer and an enviable collection of the locale’s cherry-picked food trucks. Spring Loaded is a fully licensed 18+ event, strictly no BYO alcohol.  It is an outdoor event and will go ahead rain, hail or shine.  No tables, tents, sun shelters or umbrellas are permitted, punters are urged to bring ponchos/raincoats and gumboots if rain is forecast.  Picnic rugs and low camp chairs are permitted, as well as snack food in small cooler bags, sealed bottles of water, and there will be water refill stations. And with onsite parking available at the point of entry, there’s no excuse not to come and enjoy a rocking day out on the glorious Mornington Peninsula!

The Spring Loaded festival will be held with a commitment to a COVID Safe environment.  Festival organisers will work closely with and comply with all requirements of the public health authorities in respect of this show.

There are tickets still available from Ticketek and Oztix.

PRAISE FOR THINGS TAKE TIME, TAKE TIME

triple j – Feature Album
Triple R – Feature Album
PBS FM – Feature Album
2SER – Feature Album
Edge Radio – Feature Album
SYN FM – Feature Album

“Her most intimate to date… There’s truly nothing Courtney Barnett can’t do.” – triple j

“Worth waiting for, waiting for.” – Uncut, 9/10

“Her brilliant third album, Things Time Time, Take Time, is her most reserved and thoughtful yet, full of everyday observation and wry wisdom — it grows slowly, but pay attention and you’ll grow with it” –
Rolling Stone

“For a record about captive states- isolation, anxiety, romantic hope – Things Take Time, Take Time knows how to move.”
– Mojo, ★★★★

“Things Take Time, Take Time is a quietly radical next step for the acclaimed alternative-rock singer and guitarist. The 10 songs, notable for their hand-made textures and evocative detail, have an intimate, sustained mood.” – The Age / Sydney Morning Herald

“A study both of the simple certainties of life and the big thing that comes after it. But in Barnett’s hands, death is not something to fear; merely something else to ponder every now and again, no bigger or more important than love or nature or parenthood or faith.” – The New York Times

“Barnett, known for her insightful, poetic lyrics and almost dead-pan performance style, is a modern-day Americana star. In the lineage of Patti Smith or Iggy Pop, Barnett captivates like a spell” – American Songwriter

“A newfound peak from an artist that will never stop furthering herself musically and personally.”
– Pilerats

“Her most adventurous body of work yet, Things Take Time, Take Time, marks a new chapter for Barnett. An introspective and intimate release, the record documents her musings on love, patience, healing, and self-discovery.” – Beat Magazine

“Barnett’s return is characterised by her much-prized candour, as she refines her ability to take a slice out of the best and worst parts of life and offer it up to listeners on a silver platter of indie glory.” – Blunt Magazine

“An album appreciating the little things – trees sprouting leaves, phone calls, late-night ruminations – which, inevitably, turn into the big things: gratitude, friendship, love.” – MTV

ANONYMOUS CLUB, the feature documentary from Danny Cohen that pulls back the curtain on  enigmatic singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett, will screen in cinemas across Australia from Thursday  March 17. This follows the news that ANONYMOUS CLUB will have its international premiere at the  prestigious SXSW Film Festival, Austin, Texas from March 11-19, 2022.

ANONYMOUS CLUB is the antithesis of a rock biography. With unprecedented, intimate access to  the private life of Courtney Barnett, this innovative and stylised 16mm feature documentary follows  a paradoxically introverted performer and anti-influencer, who, at the height of success, is ready to  walk away. Three years in the making, and all shot on 16mm film, Danny Cohen’s feature  documentary reveals a woman who finds power in sharing her vulnerability. Recording her  innermost thoughts on a dictaphone, Courtney begins her slow acceptance of Danny Cohen’s  camera. This unique filming process mirrors Courtney’s gradual search for purpose and emergence  as an artist embracing her place in the world.

ANONYMOUS CLUB had its world premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2021,  and went on to screen at the Sydney Film Festival, Cinefest Oz and Brisbane International Film  Festival. Audiences around Australia, will have the chance to see this compelling and cinematic documentary on the big screen when its theatrical season commences on March 17.

Writer/director Danny Cohen comments “After three years on (and off) the road, and a blurry few  months in the edit suite with legendary editor Ben Hall, it’s wild to think that piece by piece, I’ve  documented a story; one of a searching woman, of tremendous personal growth, and limitless  talent. I’ll be forever grateful to Courtney for this experience, and I’m looking forward to sharing the  film with audiences here in Australia and internationally.”

Producers Philippa Campey and Samantha Dinning add “It’s been such a joy and privilege to work  with Danny on this beautifully filmed, and thoughtfully considered feature doc. Danny’s creative  collaboration with Courtney – one of our brightest and most inspiring musicians – is unique. She’s an  everyday person living an extraordinary life, and Danny’s ability to bring the intimacy of their  creative friendship to the big screen offers insights and reflections for us all.”

Executive producer Sue Maslin comments “This film will of course delight Courtney‘s fans but it  offers so much more than her extraordinary music. She takes us on a journey through a confusing  and at times dark period in her life where she ultimately finds a sense of purpose in her creativity – even if she hasn’t worked everything out! We have all been through bumpy times over the past  couple of years and her story is a tonic, told with the honesty and humour we could all use a bit  more of right now”.

The March release of ANONYMOUS CLUB coincides with Courtney Barnett’s Australian tour dates in  support of her recently released album Things Take Time, Take Time.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets tease new album era with electric new single ‘Bubblegum Infinity’, from bands fifth album ‘Night Gnomes’ out April 22nd

by the partae February 2, 2022
written by the partae

Crashing through with another addictive, thrilling release to tease the divinely warped and curious sonic mind of songwriter Jack McEwan, Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets present new single
‘Bubblegum Infinity’.

Taken from their forthcoming new album (their fifth), Night Gnomes, the single is both a fitting example of what to expect from the broader album as it is a timely reminder of the ease of which Psychedelic Porn Crumpets can weave many distinctive creative sounds in making something definitively their own.

Just as we saw with the band’s 2021 single ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ comes layered with rich guitars and a decidedly more rock feel. However, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ stands apart with its careening melodies and hypnotic vocals; almost as if King Gizzard & The Lizard met up with Thee Oh Sees and roped in DMA’S for a session. You’d think the fusion of these vibes wouldn’t necessarily work – Psychedelic Porn Crumpets prove that it can.

“Our cute little playful member of the Night Gnomes club. I think there’s mixed opinions of this song in the group but I’m sticking by it. I like its pop sensibility and melancholy notions. It’s cheerful and good natured, it’s not trying to be something profound, more a statement of life at this time and by calling it ‘Bubblegum Infinity’, we’re showcasing that lighthearted vulnerability. So go easy on us, metal fans.

A lot of the album is about trying to work out what the F#@! is going on, in general life and obviously the period of time we’ve all found ourselves dormant in for the past two years. I started reading a few quotes from philosophers because, hey! They might know what’s going on, but mostly it was a bunch of cleverly worded gibberish that was drenched in self turmoil that thankfully, serendipitously, unbeknownst to me was the thing I found comfort in. That nobody has a clue what life is and we’re all winging it as we go! Cheers, William of Ockham.”
JACK McEWAN, PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

Particularly, when we put their new single in amongst the broader tapestry of Night Gnomes, ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ represents the balance between the previous eras of Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and their vision for what’s coming next.

“The process for this album was a continuation from Shyga! I stepped up a few recording techniques and tried to hone in on the production side of things a little more, gave my mental train a fresh lick of paint and tried to make the album step up in quality from the previous four releases while still holding onto that ‘crumpet’ approach to songwriting.

In my mind it feels like a summary of everything we’ve previously released, a nice package for new fans to enjoy but also a nod to the ‘High Visceral’ days for the older fans.”
JACK McEWAN, PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

Following the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets tradition of matching chaotic visuals to their musical counterparts, the band linked up with filmographer Tay Kaka for a fun day out to bring ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ to life.

“The video was created by our good friend Tay Kaka, the idea is exactly as it looks really, having fun at a pop-up theme park. We strapped some go-pros to our noggins and acted like jovial children for the day, which was lucky we didn’t need much practice. One day we’ll be adults but for now we’re scraping the barrel for any glimmers of wondrous adventure we can find.”
JACK McEWAN, PSYCHEDELIC PORN CRUMPETS

WATCH HERE

The release of ‘Bubblegum Infinity’ this month and Night Gnomes in April comes as Psychedelic Porn Crumpets prepare for their long awaited return to stages around Australia and overseas. 2022 will see the band embark on their Australian run supporting Ocean Alley, before  heading back to Europe and the U.K. for their long awaited tour of the regions in August and September.

By the time Night Gnomes is released, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets will have two new studio albums primed and ready to share with audiences, having delivered the wild SHYGA! The Sunlight Mound last year to rave reviews.

The critically acclaimed album came in at #4 on the ARIA Album Chart, #2 on the ARIA Vinyl Chart, claimed the #1 spot on the AIR Album Chart, not to mention earning extensive playlist and radio support on Spotify, Apple Music, triple j, BBC Radio 1, Radio X and more during its initial album cycle. Subsequently, the release of ‘Lava Lamp Pisco’ brough Psychedelic Porn Crumpets more success in the second half of 2021; the single racking up over 400k streams on Spotify alone, as well multiple playlists and radars of reviewers globally.

Adding to an already impressive body of work, the way Psychedelic Porn Crumpets continue to build and elevate their musicianship is reflected not just in the recorded output, but in the response from fans and industry in Australia and abroad.

Album pre-order now live featuring vinyl, cd, cassette tape, album bundles, merch and more. Order via the bands store ORDER HERE

Melbourne cultural taste-makers and BIPOC music label Yo CiTY are thrilled to announce the arrival of their free summer film series, Flix & Chill. Presented by Yo CiTY Connect, the events arm of the label, Flix & Chill will combine film, music, food & drink and community in a free all-inclusive family friendly affair each Saturday in February. Carlton’s Argyle Square, or Piazza Italia, will come alive across four themed sessions this month with DJs, live music, delectable food and beverage options and film screenings of local and international BIPOC filmmakers, showcasing the vast and unique voices of Melbourne’s global village.

Featuring live music and DJ sets from C-Pash, Mel Taylor, Calle Luna, Soli Tesema, Soulectric, Soju Gang, DJ Guzman, Truckload, Collette, Claddy and Yo CiTY’s own Brotha Asanti, each instalment of Flix & Chill will present a selection of short and feature length films from some of the world’s finest filmmakers, bookended by some of our city’s most exciting music talent. Screenings will include the likes of 2021’s Award Winning Crime Drama Short Film Step Back, South African Short Film TINASHE, BlackFeet Films’ multi-nominated and Award Winning short The Truth About Lies, and South African film Miracle by Award winning Director Bongekile Ndaba, among others. Each evening will embody a different theme—Around The World, Love, Just People, and Afrika—with both the film and music components exploring their week’s curatorial selection. The month-long residency boasts a sunset vibe filled with art and culture in a way that adds to the much-needed vibrancy of our recovering city while supporting local artists and businesses.

The team from Vola Foods will be serving their Cameroonian cuisine at each event introducing audiences to their mouthwatering signature dishes using native Cameroonian spices cooked on rustic grills. Get ready to feast on Vola Food’s menu favourites including Joll Rice and Stew, Suya and Plantains, Burning Fish and Puff Puff with caramel and chocolate.

Of course movie going favourites, popcorn, ice creams and a selection of non alcoholic drinks will also be available, so there is something for everyone.

Founded in 2020 on the back of Melbourne lockdowns, Yo CiTY is Melbourne’s premiere label and talent management company that showcases bespoke happenings to bring like minded people together and understand and celebrate issues that are pertinent to BIPOC experience. Championing new music and art from Black, Indigenous and Creatives of Colour, Yo CiTY has a firm commitment to storytelling that is fierce, tenacious and relationship building. The fully independent team curates exclusive experiences where art-makers from across the creative spectrum—including visual, oral, sonic, fashion, digital, entrepreneurs and more—collaborate with musicians in a way that elevates each other’s practice and ultimately bridges the revenue gap within the creative industry.

This latest series of events is just the beginning for what the collective have in store for 2022. Be sure to check out Yo CiTY’s social media to stay up to date with all upcoming news and events, and pop the following Flix & Chill dates in your diary for some of the best weekends you’ll experience this summer.
